[Bodymind] Kris Aquino and her myths

Because it seems politically incorrect to say right now, I am a little embarrassed to say I like Kris Aquino. A lot.
Or perhaps I should qualify that by saying, even if it sounds so trying-hard-to-be-seriously-professional, As an educator, I like Kris Aquino.
I like her because she has demolished many myths about sexuality, the most important being that only sluts get STDs. By getting one herself, Kris showed that even women considered alta sociedad can have sex with someone who has an STD that is passed on to her. She showed the Philippines that yes, one can actually get an STD even while sleeping with one man. A girl can get an STD without meaning to, and thus, shouldnt be blamed just because she has herself tested and discovers she has one.
With this myth slayed, I so hope more and more nice girls will get themselves tested, the way one presumes Kris did before she announced her STD to the world. It is certainly a message that needs to be sent.
Forgiveness
Another myth shes slayed is that people never forgive women who demean themselves by their lack of control. I mean, lets face it: burning a bed to the point of destroying the floor underneath is not exactly something wed expect a convent-bred girl to do. And yet, despite it all, people have forgiven her, and I applaud them for realizing that people forgive those they love, and should thus not frighten others who may want to reach for the stars and make a few mistakes along the way.
True, perhaps their craziness might not extend to burning a bed, but the point is, a woman doesn't have to be constantly identified by the one foolish thing she did, the way Nathaniel Hawthornes Hester Prynne was in The Scarlet Letter. So she can be brave about something she really believes in, because, as John Dryden said, None but the brave deserve the fair.
However, despite my admiration, I so wish Kris hadnt said what she did in her interview with Boy Abunda because in as much as shes put some myths to rest, she has now perpetuated a few others.

Turkish Riot Police Disperse Protesters With Tear Gas

Turkish police detain a protester during an anti-government protest in central Istanbul.
Turkish riot police have fired tear gas and water cannon at hundreds of protesters in Istanbul and Ankara. The protesters were demonstrating against a controversial new internet censorship bill.
Police forcefully dispersed protesters chanting anti-government slogans in Istanbul's central Taksim Square on Saturday, with demonstrators attempting to escape into side streets.
Around 300 protesters gathered in the capital Ankara, with smaller demonstrations also taking place in the coastal city of Izmir.
One protester told Euronews: "I'm here to defend my internet right. It's wrong to be banned by somebody while you pay for the internet. I'm protesting about that. And censorship is a crime."
The draft bill is due to be debated in Turkey's parliament and would enable the mass surveillance of internet users.

The proposed law would increase controls on internet usage and give the government the authority to order web hosts to keep records of users' web activity for up to two years.

China Censorship: Lady Gaga Unbanned, Rock Legend Cui Jian Shuns Official Favor

Beijing OK's Lady Gaga but may want to tone album down
It's been a mixed week for freedom of expression in China, for two recording artists who could hardly be less similar.
Lady Gaga had her new set ARTPOP greenlit for sale in the mainland after she was banned for vulgarity in 2011. Meanwhile, similarly banned rock icon Cui Jian, who has been in and out of official favor in recent years since he supported the crushed democracy movement in China in 1989, has declined a major public appearance over censorship concerns.
Cui Jian was due to appear on the Spring Festival Gala of China Central Television (CCTV), a marathon variety show that airs on the eve of Chinese Lunar New Year, which this year falls on Jan. 31. The show watched by hundreds of millions of Chinese on the eve of what is China's biggest holiday.
However, China's "Godfather of Rock" seems to have changed his mind as he did not think the all-powerful State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television would let him sing "Nothing to My Name," the anthem of the democracy movement of 1989, which was crushed in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

After her unbanning in China, the words on Lady Gaga's Twitter feed were breathless: "I'm so excited!!!! The Chinese Government Approved ARTPOP to be released in China with all 15 songs! Next I hope I can come to perform!"
It's hard to imagine Lady Gaga on stage in Beijing but stranger things have happened. When she was banned in 2011, another singer was also ruled out of contention, Katy Perry, and she made her Beijing debut earlier this month at the Beijing National Indoor Stadium.
It seems that Lady Gaga's album cover, designed by Jeff Koons and showing her straddling a big shiny blue ball while cupping her breasts, will have to be toned down for the censors.
When the authorities banned her for vulgarity in 2011, the list of songs included "Hair," "Marry The Night," "Americano," "Judas" and "Bloody Mary." The Back Street Boys were also among 100 songs banned, some 10 years after they released"I Like It That Way."

Bill Maher Calls Edward Snowden’s Words ‘Batsh*t’

Bill Maher says every time former NSA contractor Edward Snowden opens his mouth, something akin to batsh*t comes flying out. The HBO funny manwhose show has just been renewed for a 13th seasoneven went so far as to compare Snowden to Ron Paul
He reminds me a lot of [former Rep.] Ron Paul. I agree with what he says, I nod along and then he says something totally bats-, he said on Real Time with Bill Maher during an interview with author and columnist Glenn Greenwald.
As the satellite interview continued, Maher said to Greenwald, I also respect Edward Snowden, obviously this debate wouldnt be happening without Edward Snowden, but I was wondering if you agree with me that every time he opens his mouth, he also says something completely nuts.
He then cited quotes from Edward Snowden pertaining to surveillance programs being never about terrorism but about social control and diplomatic manipulation instead.
Well thats crazy, Maher said. They were about stopping terrorism, they may have gone too far, but everybody in the government isnt out to get you.
Whats nuts is the fact that you think thats nuts, Greenwald told the talk show host, adding, Hes a 29 year old, whos not a trained politician, he doesnt have aides whispering in his ear what he should say. Hes not adept at that, thats what makes him so impressive. It was an act of conscious that he stepped forward as an ordinary person.
Did you catch Bill Maher saying he thinks most everything Edward Snowden says is batsh*t? Whats your opinion on the remark? Which of the twoEdward Snowden or Bill Maherdo you think is more qualified to wear that batsh*t title?
It seems Bill Maher and Glenn Greenwald have agreed to disagree on the matteror at least thats what Maher told him they ought to do toward the end of their interview.
When he says, They know every friend youve ever discussed something with, well just have to agree to disagree on whats f-ing nuts, Maher said.
It will definitely be interesting to see how many newsworthy reactions appear as a result of this interview.
