Science Bulletins: Scientists Peer Inside "Superbug" Genome – Video

Posted: at 11:58 pm

02-07-2012 14:31 For decades MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, has been afflicting hospital patients and prison inmates with life-threatening and difficult-to-treat skin infections. In recent years this bacteria has emerged in the general population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is now causing 19000 human deaths in the United States per year—more even than HIV. A recent study of the pathogen by researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, reveals how changes in the bacteria's genome can affect its ability to attack its host.

Posted: at 11:58 pm

26-07-2012 14:13 Dr. Carlos Bustamante is a professor of genetics at Stanford University. His research focuses on analyzing genome wide patterns of variation within and between species to address fundamental questions in biology, anthropology, and medicine. His research group works on a variety of organisms and model systems ranging from humans and other primates to domesticated plant and animals. Much of his research is at the interface of computational biology, mathematical genetics, and evolutionary genomics.

03-08-2012 08:27 Please Subscribe To The Evolution Documentary YouTube Channel: MIRROR From The Richard Dawkins Foundation: Richard Dawkins shows just how similar the Human and Chimpanzee genomes really are, with the help of a great visual from the University of Nebraska Museum. Download Quicktime version (720p HD): Get the RDF TV podcast through iTunes! During Richard Dawkins' 2009 American tour, we visited Judy Diamond's "Explore Evolution" exhibit at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln. This exhibit has now been replicated in six museums around the country. While visiting we filmed a collection of short unrehearsed and unscripted videos—just inspired by the "Explore Evolution" exhibit. See the "Explore Evolution" web page here:

NOVA scienceNOW : 51 – Public Genomes, Algae Fuel, Mystery of the Gakkel Ridge, Yoky Matsuoka – Video

Posted: at 11:58 pm

04-09-2012 14:10 Public Genomes - 02:00 A slew of businesses now offer to test your DNA and assess your risk of getting cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. But can genetic testing provide accurate predictions of conditions with complex genetic underpinnings? On another front, researchers at Harvard have launched the Personal Genome Project, enlisting thousands of people to make their DNA sequences and other personal information public on the Internet. The aim is to improve medical research, but what are the risks? Algae Fuel - 15:22 What if you could generate useable biofuels that didn't have the problems associated with corn ethanol or plant-based processes, didn't use arable land or freshwater, and didn't rely on foodstuffs, and that also cost very little and could be "tuned" to produce hydrogen? Well, there is such a thing. It's algae, which just may be our biofuel future. Mystery of the Gakkel Ridge - 29:11 Stretching for more than a thousand miles at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean, Gakkel Ridge is an eerie undersea landscape of volcanoes, hydrothermal plumes, and exotic creatures. But while Gakkel Ridge may be unique on Earth, it bears an enticing resemblance to Europa, one of Jupiter's many moons. Could exploring Gakkel bring us one step closer to finding out if Europa might host life? Profile: Yoky Matsuoka - 36:36 Growing up in Japan, Yoky Matsuoka was on her way to becoming a world-class tennis player. When injuries ended her tennis dreams, she turned to another early ...

ENCODE: Encyclopedia Of DNA Elements – Video

Posted: at 11:58 pm

06-09-2012 04:00 ENCODE, the Encyclopaedia of DNA Elements, is the most ambitious human genetics project to date. It takes the 3 billion letters described by the Human Genome Project in 2000, and tries to explain them. Remarkably, ENCODE scientists have managed to assign a biochemical function to 80% of the genome, including the genes and the parts of the genome that tell those genes what to do. This information is helping us understand how genomes are interpreted to make different types of cells and different people -- and crucially, how mistakes can lead to disease. In this video, ENCODE's lead coordinator, Ewan Birney, and Nature editor Magdalena Skipper talk about the challenges of managing this colossal project and what we've learnt about our genomes.
