Plans Announced for Full Greenhouse on International Space Station – Futurism

Posted: August 23, 2022 at 12:55 am

And you'll never guess what it's growing first.Orbital Greenhouse

A private space company called Redwire Corporation has announced plans for what it's calling the "first-ever commercially owned greenhouse" in space.

Redwire is hoping to install the facility on the International Space Station no earlier than spring 2023. The startup was awarded a contract with the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, which manages US lab operations on board the ISS.

The greenhouse is meant to serve as a testing bed for growing sustenance in a microgravity environment, which will be important as humans start to embark on longer trips through deep space.

Despite the lofty promises, we have yet to even see any renders of Redwire's greenhouse, meaning the ambitious project will have a lot to prove.

The company does say it's building on "decades of flight heritage and innovation of world-class technologies," according to its website,

Redwire has also managed plant investigations for NASA's Advanced Plant Habitat, a small, fully automated growth chamber on board the ISS, since 2018.

"Redwire Greenhouse will expand opportunities for scientific discovery to improve crop production on Earth and enable critical research for crop production in space to benefit future long-duration human spaceflight," said Dave Reed, Redwire's greenhouse project manager, in a statement.

"Growing full crops in space will be critical to future space exploration missions as plants provide food, oxygen and water reclamation," he added.

During the greenhouse's inaugural flight, Washington-based cannabis company Dewey Scientific will grow "industrial hemp" for a gene study.

Redwire is also collaborating with Tupperware Brands yes, that Tupperware to develop a nutrient delivery system.

The company is also hoping to help NASA on its Artemis missions to the Moon "and beyond," according to Reed.

Scientists Warn of Megaflood That Could Drown California – Futurism

Posted: at 12:55 am

Climate change has doubled the likelihood.Biblical Vibes

The state of California is no stranger to natural disasters, always on edge in fearful anticipation of the next "Big One." But what if Californias worst catastrophe came not from wildfires, droughts, or earthquakes, but a megaflood?

A new paper, published last week in the journal Science Advances, examines two scenarios: a more or less current megaflood in the recent historical climate, and a future scenario in the projected climate of 2081-2100. The findings indicate that the likelihood of that type of extreme storm flooding has roughly doubled thanks to global warming, and only increases in likelihood as the planet continues to heat up.

A megaflood would not be an unprecedented event in Californian history. Far from it, as ruinous floods typically occur every five to seven times per millennium, according to the researchers, and the latest one in 1862 came off the back of weeks-long winter storms that turned the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys into a 300 mile long "inland sea."

And now thanks to climate change, the next storm is not only more likely to happen, but it's likely to be even more destructive.

"In the future scenario, the storm sequence is bigger in almost every respect," said study co-author and UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain in a press release.

Such a flood would be big enough to generate up to 400 percent more runoff water in the Sierra Nevada Mountains than in historical records. Some spots would get hit with over 100 inches of rain in a month, and even the more conservative estimates of the current climate scenario indicate that widespread areas would sag under some 40 inches of rain in 30 days.

The 1862 flood happened when the state's population was just 500,000. Today, it's nearly 40 million, and the researchers estimate that a modern day megaflood would be devastating: over $1 trillion in damages, and no doubt countless lives lost and displaced.

"Every major population center in California would get hit at once probably parts of Nevada and other adjacent states, too," Swain said.

Two Blockchain Sleazebags May Have Crashed the Entire Crypto Market – Futurism

Posted: at 12:55 am

The crypto market took over a decade, millions of both experienced and amateur investors, and a few super annoying Super Bowl ads to build. But according to a new report from New York Magazine, it may have taken just two of the skeeziest cryptbros around to bring the industry to its knees, both of whom are now believed to be on the run.

Who, you ask, might these lowlives be? Su Zhu and Kyle Davies, according to the accusations, the still-missing founders of imploded crypto hedge fund Three Arrow Capital (3AC), which filed for bankruptcy last month. The pair who are believed to still be on the lam, sadly without their new, stupidly-titled megayacht over-borrowed and over-promised, all the while sweeping insolvency under the rug. When the project finally collapsed, so did those who lent them millions and even billions of dollars likely resulting in the market crash that caused a full trillion dollars to simply evaporate.

"I suspect they might be 80 percent of the total original contagion," Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of crypto exchange FTX, told NY Mag, referring to Three Arrow's alleged responsibility for the broader market crash."They weren't the only people who blew out, but they did it way bigger than anyone else did. And they had way more trust from the ecosystem prior to that."

As NY Mag details, 3AC's success was built on two of the flimsiest things around: social media influence and heavy borrowing. Zhu especially amassed a vast following on Twitter, where he would make wild claims about market "supercycles," urging crypto-happy followers to just keep buying no matter what the market looked like at face value.

Really, though, the pair's outward facing bravado appears to have been a complete front. They were borrowing massive amounts of money from new investors including $66 million from Zhu's wife in order to pay old debts, and in retrospect, it seems quite clear that they very much knew their operation was actually insolvent. Which, well, is basically just a Ponzi scheme.

"The numbers they were reporting in May were very, very wrong," Lane Kasselman, chief business officer of Blockchain.com, told NY Mag. "We firmly believe they committed fraud. There's no other way to state it that's fraud, they lied."

Blockchain.com, notably, lost $270 million in unpaid loans to 3AC, and his since laid off about a quarter of its staff. Among other casualties were crypto exchange Voyager, which has since gone bankrupt and swallowed all user funds, and Genesis Global Trading, which NY Mag says lent 3AC $2.8 billion a sum that will likely never be paid back.

The duo have also been accused of borrowing money from organized crime operations, which may really be why they're now in hiding. Eep!

So far, liquidators have only been able to recover a paltry $40 million of 3AC's onetime billions. Still, even if all of the money in its portfolio was somehow recovered, those billions would hardly be enough to reverse the colossally destructive game of dominos that the firm's eruption caused perhaps proving, once and for all, that the crypto market is less Wild West and more house of cards.

"They used to boast that they can borrow as much money as they want," an unnamed trader who knew the pair in Singapore told NY Mag. "This was all planned, man, from the way they established credibility to the way the fund was structured."

Neither Zhu nor Davies replied toNY Mag's request for comment, except for an automatic email reply from Davies that read "Please note I am out of office at this time."

A strong WiFi connection is a necessity in 2022, which is why this deal on a three-pack of Eeros latest routers really stands out. The mesh WiFi system allows all three routers to communicate with one another to create a large network that can cover up to 5,500 square feet. Each router needs to be connected to power, but only one has to be connected to your modem with an Ethernet cable. Each of Eeros routers are more powerful than the one provided by your internet provider, and will provide better, more reliable coverage than a WiFi repeater. In the minds of the futurists, hydrogen is the way forward – Visordown

Posted: at 12:55 am

Hydrogen power is becoming a reality. While the method for deploying it is not singularised yet, its development is continuing. But, that does not mean it is out of reach for futuristic designers.

When it comes to designing a motorcycle with a futuristic look, a futuristic method of propulsion is also generally desired. That is why in sci-fi films all the cars and bikes and spaceships are electric.

In the real world, hydrogen power is becoming more prevalent but still remains something to look at for 2030 rather than 03/02/23. While major manufacturers like Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda and more are trying to develop hydrogen technology for the future, conceptual designers are using hydrogen as the hypothetical fuel for their hypothetical vehicles.

One such designer is Anton Guzhov, whose Hydra concept uses a hydrogen powertrain.

This is different to the hydrogen fuel cell solution that TVS Motors, for example, is planning to use in one of its upcoming scooters. Instead, the hydrogen powertrain of the hydra is a more traditional view of what is the most abundant resource in our universe: combustion.

But, despite the traditional solution, the futurism of the Hydra is clear in its design.

It is all very square. The handlebars are parallel to the road surface, and the foot pegs are about 18-feet long. It would fit well in an open-world sci-fi videogame, for example.

And its futurism is well-placed. Hydrogen combustion engines are, as of now, inefficient compared to electrics, and - possibly more importantly - compared to hydrogen fuel cell electrics.

Hydrogen combustion is not an impossibility for the future. Its combustion produces only water, but keeping it cold enough to be stored, and managing that storage with what is quite a volatile element, means that it is a complicated fuel to use.

This is also true for hydrogen fuel cells, of course, but the increased efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells compared to hydrogen combustion makes the storage complication more worthwhile to overcome when looking at fuel cells.

But, that is not to say that internal combustion engines using hydrogen as fuel cannot become more efficient. That is why companies such as Toyota, and the aforementioned motorcycle manufacturers Kawasaki and Yamaha, are developing such technology.

But, for now, at least, hydrogen seems best used in the fuel cells planned by manufacturers like TVS.

SpaceX Is about to Launch the First Ever Astronaut Who’s an Indigenous Woman – Futurism

Big round of applause for Nicole Aunapu Mann, a member of the Wailacki nation!Heck Yeah

This fall, astronaut Nicole Aunapu Mann, a naval aviator and mechanical engineer, is set to fly to the International Space Station as a member of NASA's upcoming SpaceX Crew-5 mission and in doing so, as Universe Today reports, she'llbecome the first ever indigenous woman in space.

Mann, who hails from Petaluma, California, is a member of the Wailacki nation, one of the Round Valley Indian Tribes native to Northern California. A marine with a venerable military career, she's served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and has logged more than 2,500 hours of flight time in 25 different types of aircrafts, according to Universe Today.

Mann also helped build the Space Launch System (SLS), NASA's massive mega Moon rocket, now scheduled to launch the first Artemis mission later this month.

"It's very exciting," Mann told Indian Country Today. "I think it's important that we communicate this to our community, so that other Native kids, if they thought maybe that this was not a possibility or to realize that some of those barriers that used to be there are really starting to get broken down."

This is an achievement worth highlighting. NASA has a long history of exclusion something that the agency has had to grapple with in recent years. And while NASA shouldn't get any untoward credit for righting wrongs that are long overdue, we should absolutely celebrate the change-makers like Mann who are bravely breaking decades-old barriers.

Mann's space exploration aspirations don't stop with Crew-5. She's one of the 18 astronauts who was selected to train for the Artemis Moon landings, which means that Mann if ultimately chosen from this elite group of 18 could someday be the first woman to step foot on the Moon.

"It's just this really overwhelming sense of emotion," Mann told Inverse back in 2021, discussing the opportunity to potentially be chosen for the Moon landings, "in the best of ways that I can describe."

Coinbase Is Riddled With Insider Trading, Researchers Allege – Futurism

Who could have foreseen this?Insider Trading

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase might have a much bigger insider trading problem than we thought.

Traders may have had access to improper info ahead of 15 to 37 listings ten to 25 percent of the total on the exchange since 2018, according to researchers at the University of Technology Sydney.

In their new paper, the three Australian researchers found "evidence of systematic insider trading in cryptocurrency markets," with their analysis showing "significant price run-ups before official listing announcements, similar to prosecuted cases of insider trading in stock markets."

While it's not exactly a smoking gun, it's yet another data point suggesting that insider trading is rampant on crypto exchanges bringing the worst sins of traditional finance, in other words, to the brave new world of blockchain.

"Our findings identify cases that are yet to be prosecuted,"they wrote.

The team looked at the average price of 146 coins 300 and 100 hours before Coinbase the largest publicly traded exchange in the world made the announcement that they'd be listed on the platform. On average, tokens rose another two percent over the next 100 hours.

"From visual inspection, we note that there is an evident run-up pattern prior to the listing announcement starting at -250 hours," they write, implying that insiders had advanced, non-public notice of profitable investments.

The news comes weeks after a Coinbase manager was indicted by federal prosecutors for leaking info about new crypto due to be listed on the exchange to a brother and friend, getting away with more than $1 million in profit before attempting to flee the country.

The crypto exchange is also reportedly under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is looking into whether crypto on it should've been registered as securities.

Not everybody agrees the new paper is evidence to take seriously. One expert source told Decrypt that the study "jumps to conclusions" without providing clear evidence.

Meanwhile, a Coinbase spokesperson reiterated in a statement to Decrypt that it "takes allegations of front-running incredibly seriously. We work hard to ensure all market participants have access to the same information."

Whether that kind of line of reasoning will prove to be enough to convince federal prosecutors, of course, remains to be seen.

Hubble Gives JWST a Run for Its Money With Gorgeous "Celestial Cloudscape" Photo – Futurism

Hubble's still got it.A Star Is Born

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope may be quite a bit older than its groundbreaking successor, but as an incredible new image of the Orion Nebula goes to show, it's still delivering some mind-blowing new images of the cosmos.

This "celestial cloudscape," asthe European Space Agency (ESA) refers to it, is what is known as a "Herbig-Haro object," which are the glowing clouds that surround stars as they're born.

Herbig-Haro objects, "are formed when stellar winds or jets of gas spewing from these newborn stars form shockwaves colliding with nearby gas and dust at high speeds," according to the ESA.

And, needless to say, the resulting composite image of the object is absolutely breathtaking.

The gigantic Orion Nebula is one of the most studied objects in space both because of its massive size it spans 24 light-years across and because it's only about 1,000 light years away from Earth. In the right conditions, it can even be seen by the naked eye from Earth.

Although it's been photographed on plenty of occasions, this latest image of the Orion Nebula is actually a composite of a whopping 520 exposures, showcasing an astonishing amount of detail.

"The outflows themselves are visible as gracefully curving structures at the top and bottom of this image," the ESA waxes in its description. "Their interaction with the large-scale flow of gas and dust from the core of the nebula distorts them into sinuous curves."

Most of us can't muster that kind of flowery, sensuous prose for our significant others, much less for objects further away than we could ever hope to travel in our lifetimes.

But then again, most of us aren't astrophysicists, either.
