Tesco to DNA test all meat after horse burger investigation

Posted: January 30, 2013 at 2:45 pm

Tesco (Other OTC: TSCDY - news) is introducing DNA testing across its meat products and has dropped its frozen burger supplier after burgers containing horse meat were found on sale in its supermarkets.

Tesco said on Wednesday that it had been "working hard to understand" why traces of horse DNA were found in burgers on sale in some of its supermarkets two weeks ago.

The company pledged to stop such an event "ever happening again" and plans to introduce a comprehensive system of DNA testing across its meat products.

Tim Smith, Tesco's technical director, said: "We now understand - with as much certainty as possible what happened. The evidence tells us that our frozen burger supplier, Silvercrest, used meat in our products that did not come from the list of approved suppliers we gave them.

"Nor was the meat from the UK or Ireland (OTC BB: IRLD - news) , despite our instruction that only beef from the UK and Ireland should be used in our frozen beef burgers. Consequently we have decided not to take products from that supplier in future. We took that decision with regret but the breach of trust is simply too great."

Scientific tests carried out by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland found traces of horse DNA in burgers on sale in some of the UK and Ireland's leading supermarkets, including Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland and Dunnes Stores.

Supermarkets have pulled tens of thousands of frozen beefburgers from their shelves after tests revealed that products from Irish supply company Silvercrest contained horse and pig DNA. Tesco was first to remove the products.

Silvercrest, an Irish company, sold beef burgers to Tesco containing 29 per cent horse meat. Silvercrest said earlier this month that it had "done nothing wrong" . It believed the contaminated meat was from Europe and is investigating two suppliers.

"It has shown that, in spite of our stringent tests, checks and controls there remained a small possibility that something could go wrong and it did," said Mr Smith.

"We want to stop it ever happening again, so we are taking action to reduce that possibility still further."

Horse DNA Found in Spanish Burgers Amid Food Standards Concern

Posted: at 2:45 pm

Horse DNA has been found in two beef burger products sold in Spain, according to a report by the Spanish consumer organization OCU, adding to concern over food standards after similar discoveries in the U.K. and Ireland.

The products were sold by closely held supermarket chains Eroski and AhorraMas SA, the group said today, adding that the meat was generally of low quality.

OCUs study follows tests by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland that found beef products that contained horse DNA. Tesco Plc (TSCO), the U.K.s largest grocer, was among supermarkets that withdrew some beef products earlier this month. The Irish agency said the beef didnt pose any public health concerns.

Only five out of the 20 products analyzed in OCUs study offered meat with an acceptable level of quality, the Spanish consumer body said. Eroski and AhorraMas own brand Alipende sold products that contained horse DNA without indicating it on their labels, the organization said.

Results clearly show that consumers are being deceived because burgers sold have labels that dont indicate the real ingredients, OCU said in the report. It is not a problem of food security, but it is a deceit to the consumer, who brings home a different product than the one he thinks he is buying.

Some burgers sold by other retailers are too expensive and have very poor quality with high levels of salt, fat and additives, according to the report.

Eroskis burgers dont pose any health risks, the Basque Country, Spain-based company said in an e-mailed statement today. The potential existence of horse DNA in the meat could be derived from being in contact with horse during the manufacturing process, according to the statement.

AhorraMas, based in Madrid, said in a separate e-mailed statement it withdrew all Alipende burgers from its supermarkets after the OCU report was published. The chain doesnt take part in the elaboration process of the burgers, it said.

DNA retest leads to cold case arrest

Posted: at 2:45 pm

CLEVELAND, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Ohio prison officials investigating why a serial killer's DNA was not put into a state database said at least 300 others hadn't been recorded.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer said one of the 300 felons whose DNA wasn't properly recorded in the database -- violating a state law to collect samples to cross-reference with other cases and provide a record for police to check in future investigations -- was linked to crimes once a new sample was taken.

Larry McGowan, 37, served time for raping a 53-year-old woman and only after being let out on parole was he linked to three previously unsolved rapes and the 1997 murder of Maxine Pratt in Cleveland, the newspaper said.

Prison officials said McGowan's initial test "failed" in 2003 for an unknown reason. Protocol dictates when an inmate's sample isn't properly recorded the private lab that analyzed it was supposed to notify the corrections department and request a new one. It wasn't until 2012 that the lab notified state officials of his failed sample, said JoEllen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Akron, Ohio, police then took a new DNA sample that linked McGowan to the other cases, The Plain Dealer said.

McGowan has additionally been charged with another alleged rape in November 2012 -- two weeks after he was let out on parole.

The state crime lab's investigation began when Anthony Sowell, who served 15 years in prison for attempted rape and was released in 2005, was arrested again in 2009 for killing 11 women in Cleveland. Sowell's DNA was never recorded prior to his release. Had that happened, police said they may have been able to identify him sooner and stop the killing spree.

DNA mapping offers new hope to cancer patients

Posted: at 8:45 am

London, Jan 29 (ANI): Researchers predict that cancer will become a manageable disease, thanks to a revolutionary treatment which will be available within five years.

All patients will soon have their tumour's DNA, its genetic code, sequenced, enabling doctors to ensure they give exactly the right drugs to keep the disease at bay, the Telegraph reported.

Doctors hope it will be an important step towards transforming some types of cancer into a chronic rather than fatal disease.

The technique could enable terminally ill patients, who can currently expect to live only months, to carry on for a decade or more in relatively good health, according to specialists at the Institute of Cancer Research in London.

"We should be aspiring to cure cancer, but for people with advanced disease, it will be a question of managing them better so they survive for much longer - for many years," Prof Alan Ashworth, chief executive of the institute said.

"Cancer often appears in people who are old, and if we can keep them alive long enough for them to die of something else, then we are turning cancer into a chronic disease," he said.

Prof Ashworth said that understanding of how different cancers were caused by different genetic triggers was building "incredibly rapidly".

Genetic profiling of tumours is already used to some extent, but current methods only look for a few genes.

Women with advanced breast cancer are tested to see if their tumours have a particular variant of the HER2 gene, which causes a fifth of cases.

Those with it are given Herceptin, but the same drug would do no good for those without the gene variant.

DLA Reimburses Trusted Suppliers for SigNature DNA Marking of High-Reliability Electronic Parts

Posted: at 8:44 am

STONY BROOK, NY--(Marketwire - Jan 28, 2013) - Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. ( OTCBB : APDN ), (Twitter: @APDN), a provider of DNA-based anti-counterfeiting technology and product authentication solutions, today welcomed the announcement by the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) that the Agency would subsidize APDN's SigNature DNA marking for defense suppliers who provide designated high-reliability electronics to the Agency. The announcement, published as an "Update" on the DLA Bid Board System (DIBBS) web site on January 24, 2013, also emphasized that "effective immediately, only trusted sources who comply with Deoxyribonucleic Acid marking requirement in DLAD 52.11-9074 are eligible to receive FSC 5962 awards from DLA.There are no exceptions."

The text of the DIBBS announcement, which also appeared on DLA's on line Supplier Information Resource Center (SIRC), explains that the Agency will "reimburse trusted sources who receive awards for the direct costs of the annual DNA marking license that must be obtained from Applied DNA Sciences..."

The announcement also notes that "trusted sources will be reimbursed through a CLIN for 'Contractor DNA Marking' in the award document. Those companies will be reimbursed for one license per year."The acronym 'CLIN' pertains to the DLA Contract Line Item Number system. The "license" to which DLA refers includes the costs for the creation and archiving of an annual mark specific to a single trusted supplier.

Since November 15, 2012, SigNature DNA marking from APDN has been required for use by suppliers who are awarded contracts to provide electronic parts in the FSC 5962 category, a mandate written into the DLAD clause noted above.

The January 24 announcement is the first time that the subsidy and trusted sources details have been released.

Janice Meraglia, Vice President for Government and Military Programs at APDN, said, "By subsidizing the cost of the DNA program to those trusted suppliers who win awards, DLA continues to stand firm in its commitment to our service men and women."

Applied DNA Sciences CEO and President, Dr. James A. Hayward commented:

"DLA has lowered any barrier to compliance with the DNA mandate by implementing subsidized costs and safe procurement through trusted sources. It is a formula that could be powerfully applied to other high-risk categories of parts provided to DLA, and to other government agencies.

"For electronics businesses, the cost/benefit ratio is significantly enhanced. Return-on-DNA-investment will one day be measured in market share recovered by original manufacturers, and in equipment and lives saved from the hazards of counterfeit electronics."

High-risk categories in the military supply can include load-bearing parts like ball-bearings, and other critical parts such as O-rings, fasteners, and brake shoes. These parts are thought to be widely counterfeited. In the commercial sector, fake medical and automotive parts are reported to be common, creating a comparable threat.DLA addressed these issues in a press release on October 31, 2012, stating, in a FAQ about SigNature DNA marking:
