**Fight Censorship on YouTube** Blair County, PA -- A TRIPLE HOMICIDE OCCURRED IN BLAIR COUNTY NEAR GEESEYTOWN TODAY. A GUNMAN SHOT AND KILLED 2 MEN AND ONE WOMAN AT THREE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. THEN SHOT AT POLICE OFFICERS BEFORE BEING KILLED BY POLICE. THE DEAD SUBJECT WAS A BLAIR COUNTY RESIDENT. THE SUBJECT PASSED POLICE ON THE ROADWAY AND BEGAN SHOOTING AT SEVERAL POLICE VEHICLES. THE SUBJECT THEN HIT A THIRD POLICE VEHICLE HEAD ON. AND SHOT AT THAT OFFICER. SEVERAL OFFICERS WERE HIT BY GUNFIRE AND WILL RECOVER. POLICE DID NOT RELEASE THE NAME OF THE DEAD SUBJECT. Moscow, Dec 22 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Chechen authorities have shut down a local newspaper after its editor-in-chief asked Russian President Vladimir Putin a question, although they maintain it was not censorship.

Belkis Dudayeva, who heads the Put Kadyrova (Kadyrov's Way), got the floor for a couple of minutes during Putin's four-and-a-half-hour press conference in Moscow Thursday.

She managed to squeeze in two questions, one about the cause of unrest in the North Caucasus, which is plagued by Islamic insurgency, and the other about cuts at the state-owned Kavkaz radio.

Although Putin offered plenty of headline-grabbing comments Thursday, his replies to Dudayeva were unremarkable, as he noted the decrease in terrorist attacks and praised local media for their contribution.

The high point was when he snapped at journalists snickering at the seemingly sycophantic name of the newspaper, which he said had been named after Akhmad Kadyrov, the former Chechen rebel who became the republic's president under Putin, pacifying it with an iron fist until he was killed in a bomb attack in 2004.

Putin was, however, soon upstaged by Chechen authorities, who announced within hours that Put Kadyrova has been closed by its publishers, the Itum-Kalinsky district administration. The paper used Kadyrov's name without permission, Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, son of the late Akhmad Kadyrov, was cited as saying by the Chechen government website.

Dudayeva also asked "provocative questions" unrelated to district affairs, her paper's area of focus, the report said, without elaborating.

Officials at the Itum-Kalinsky district - a swath of mountain terrain with a population of 7,000 - could not comment, but a deputy district head admitted he learned about the closure from RIA Novosti. Paper representatives could not be reached for comment.

But a spokesman for Kadyrov Jr. told RIA Novosti that the paper was, indeed, shut down on the order of the district head.

Put Kadyrova was not authorised to use Kadyrov's name, Alvi Karimov confirmed.

An expos on Chongqing #39;s former police chief Wang Lijun has reportedly been pulled off the shelves. Observers say it #39;s another sign that Chinese leaders are still far from ready for scrutiny. This latest edition of the Southern Weekly features the man now behind bars. The Guangdong-based media conglomerate is known for its bold reporting that sometimes crosses China #39;s murky censorship lines. The edition came out on Monday, and was reportedly snatched up within hours. By that evening, booksellers said no more were available, and the edition has been recalled. This shows that even though some people are happy this might be another wave of reform, it #39;s probably just wishful thinking." The Southern Weekly focused on Wang #39;s complex relationship with ousted Party secretary of Chongqing, Bo Xilai. It also revealed how their infamous crime-fighting campaign frequently relied on brutal torture. The 8-article collection alleged Bo had ordered Wang to set up a massive surveillance and intelligence network in Chongqing, including using GPS technology to track individuals. Chinese Security Cracks Down on VPNs
China #39;s Internet surveillance means everyone in cyberspace is subject to monitoring, and what they can access on online is heavily filtered. Virtual private networks, or VPNs, have long been one of the few ways available to get around such controls. They allow web users to access sites banned in China, like Facebook and Twitter. Now, those services are being squeezed out. Foreign VPN providers like Astrill, WiTopia, and StrongVPN have recently announced that their servers are being blocked in China, apparently because of increased censorship measures. In response to the reports, state-run Global Times says the country #39;s "Great Firewall" system has not become stricter. Instead, it claims these foreign VPN providers are illegal to operate in China to begin with, because they have not registered there. According to Chinese law, only local companies, and foreign ones in joint-ventures with Chinese companies are allowed to register. VPN disruptions not only inconvenience web users, they also affect business operations. It #39;s common for multinational companies in China to use VPNs for cross-border online communications.
