Activity that takes place within the four walls of the warehouse or DC is usually well orchestrated, documented, and in most cases, supported by technology. Using warehouse management systems (WMS), companies have been increasingly automating this aspect of their supply chains. Transportation management systems (TMS) take over once shipments reach the other side of the gate, so to speak, and make their way to their destinations.

And somewhere between the WMS and TMS lies the yard and dock, both of which have frequently been referred to as the black holes of the supply chain. Thats because at many facilities, these vital areas arent necessarily managed with technology, or the solutions in use dont talk to other platforms.

This leaves gaps in the supply chainsomething that companies have increasingly been trying to avoid in todays fast-paced, resource-constrained fulfillment environment.

By using software that provides trailer and shipment visibility; automates the truck arrival, check-in and departure process; monitors trailer movement out in the yard; and tracks activity taking place on the dock, companies can bridge the gap between their existing solutions. They can also speed up their transportation operations, improve operator safety and reduce demurrage and detention charges.

Yard management systems (YMS) help companies to achieve these goals and more, yet according to Peerless Research Groups 2022 Materials Handling Technology Study, their usage has been waning over the last few years.

While more than half (56%) of companies surveyed are using WMS and inventory management systems and 26% are using TMS, just 7% have deployed YMS in their operations. Looking back a bit further, the percentage of companies using YMS dropped from 17% in 2020 to 8% in 2021.

Despite what the numbers may say, Bill Brooks, vice president of Capgeminis North American transportation portfolio, says that hes seeing more interest in YMS on the part of shippers that want to get better visibility into their yard and dock activity.

Whether its due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic or the labor shortage (or both), hes seeing more companies using self-service kiosks for trucks that are checking in and out of the yard. Theyre also hooking their YMS systems into their existing WMS, TMS and enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions with the goal of getting unified dashboards that everyone can rely on and work from.

A bigger interest in YMS started about a year or two ago and has yet to wane, says Brooks. Were continuing to see a lot of focus in that space, mainly because of the positive gains that can be captured by reducing inefficiencies and improving out in the yard.

In response to this demand, he says WMS vendors are expanding their scope and adding YMS to their lineups while the best-of-breed yard management providers are adding new functionalities and capabilities.

Software vendors are takinginnovations from other supply chain management areas and applying them in the yard, Brooks explains. These innovations include sensors, tracking mechanisms, data analytics and Edge computing, the latter of which speeds up the process of information retrieval by bringing computation and data storage closer to the data source. Armed with these insights, shippers can adjust on the fly faster, address problems quicker and make better decisions about their yard and dock activity.

The best-of-breed YMS vendors are also using more application programming interfaces (APIs) to connect their specialized yard management applications with the TMS, WMS, ERP and other solutions that the shippers already have in place. The Cloud is also supporting this movement and helping to democratize YMS and make it more available to a wider range of users.

Finally, Brooks says that hes seeing more aerial drones being used in the yard, both for safety and security as well as for better tracking and visibility. I think were going to see more of this, and particularly when it comes to yard monitoring that uses drones and Artificial Intelligence (AI)and that will help to take the human error out of the equation.

Simon Tunstall, research director, warehousing and fulfillment technologies at Gartner, is also seeing more demand for YMS right now. Some of the growth is being driven by rising fuel costs, ongoing labor constraints and the need for faster turnaround of visiting drivers. This is because extended dwell times not only result in higher carrier accessorial fees, but they also affect the drivers hours of service (HOS) compliance.

These and other realities are pushing more companies to explore YMS and all that it has to offer. In fact, Tunstall says he saw a significant surge in YMS-related inquiries during the peak COVID monthsand that interest has yet to drop off. Interest in YMS has continued, although not quite at the same rate that we saw during peak during the middle of the pandemic, says Tunstall. Still, it certainly hasnt dropped off at all.

Of particular interest right now are applications that support visiting drivers and that offer kiosks for them to use as they enter and exit the yard. Tunstall points to consulting firm MacGregor Partners and software provider Vector as two organizations that are focusing more on kiosks right now. By tying the kiosk and gate automation together, and by offering mobile devices that visiting drivers can use, these and other firms are helping companies streamline and automate their yards.

These solutions differ from more traditional YMS applications, which tend to focus on dock scheduling and the movement of containers and trailers out in the yard. Along with supporting visiting drivers, some of the newer solutions digitize paperwork and provide electronic bills of lading (eBLs) that help companies gain yard efficiencies.

Tunstall says that one of biggest selling points to YMS is the good return on investment (ROI) it provides in exchange for a comparatively small time and financial investment. A YMS can provide quite a good ROI for a shipper thats losing trailers, incurring detention costs and that wants to turn around visiting drivers faster, he says. It can also help improve overall product flow both in and out of the warehouse or manufacturing operation, which in turn can even further enhance the softwares value for a specific shipper.

And, many YMS vendors offer fairly quick implementation times compared to other types of supply chain management applications, says Tunstall, and lower overall cost to run the software itself. Combined, these benefits make YMS attractive for many types of shippers, including very large, busy sites that currently rely on manual and disparate solutions to run their yard operations.

In some cases, current YMS users are assessing their existing systems and wondering how they can get even more out of them. This push to optimize existing YMSand assumedly, most other types of SCM software right nowhelps companies do more with what they have and avoids the expense of new software applications.

Ive definitely seen an uptick in interest from companies that already have YMS and are wondering whether theyre optimizing them or if there are opportunities to upgrade, says Howard Turner, director, supply chain systems at St. Onge Company.

Shippers are also connecting existing software applications to gain better visibility, both in the yard and across the entire supply chain. For example, the firm thats using a fleet tracking application to determine where trailers are on the roadand if theyre going to be delayedmay connect that software to a yard management system.

That way, the YMS has the information it needs to be able to track accurate arrival times and make predictions based on delays that are taking place on the road. Once the trailer arrives and gets inside of the gate, the YMS continues to track it and let users know when its time to pull up to the dock, pull away from the dock, and so forth.

Turner sees this digitization of the yard as an important tool that companies can use to offset the labor challenges, supply chain constraints and other issues that affect the delivery times. With a YMS in place, companies can also eliminate issues like a driver waiting too long at the gate to be let in by a security guard or having to drive around and look for a spot in the yard. This, in turn, helps reduce dwell timeand the related carrier feeswhile keeping drivers on the road and moving more efficiently.

To companies that want to start leveraging these and other benefits of YMS, Brooks says a good starting point is to know what youre looking for. Identify your core yard- and dock-related challenges, and pinpoint the areas that are ripe for improvement. Look at both standalone and best-of-breed solutions and those being offered up as part of an existing WMS, TMS or ERP, and then decide which is the best fit for your specific needs.

Keep your eyes open because theres a lot of innovation taking place right now in terms of drones, AI, analytics and Edge computingthings that may not even be on your radar yet, says Brooks. In some cases, those innovations may be added with relatively little or no cost, and may give you some unexpected gains in return.

Yard Management Systems (YMS): Bridging the gap between warehousing and transportation - Logistics Management

The screwy ending in which Ryan Blaney essentially won the same race twice on May 22 turned out to be the least of NASCARs problems with its All-Star Race at Texas Motor Speedway.

A little more than a week later, the organizations social media team posted a vague apology to the LGBTQ+ community for having not aligned with NASCARs mission to be a welcoming sport for all.

NASCAR never said so, but the controversy had to do with a Republican governor playing a minor role in pre-race festivities. Were about to find out how NASCAR handles the sequel.

NASCARs rather clumsy apology on Twitter late this spring stemmed from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott waving the ceremonial green flag at Texas Motor Speedway for the annual All-Star Race.

Political figures have been throwing out first pitches at baseball games and doing ceremonial puck drops at hockey games for decades. No one should have thought it odd for Abbott to show interest in a special event being hosted by a track in his state. Though NASCAR also held the previous years race at TMS, it could have located the 2022 event at any of two dozen other tracks around the country.

However, Abbott is a polarizing figure if for no other reason than he governs a battleground state in which Democrats and Republicans have been battling fiercely in statewide and national elections. Additionally, Abbott issued an executive order earlier in the year directing the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate parents who authorize gender-affirming medical treatment for their transgender children.

NASCAR still hasnt confirmed it, but that apparently was the impetus for LGBTQ+ to protest Abbotts token involvement in the All-Star Race.

The Xfinity Series regular season ends on Sept. 16 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The winner earns a spot in the playoffs beginning the following week at Texas Motor Speedway. The regular-season title could be up for grabs. There is also the possibility of battles involving defending champ Daniel Hemric, Landon Cassill, Sheldon Creed, and Ryan Sieg all fighting for two playoff berths.

On Monday, track officials announced first-year Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin will serve as the grand marshal for the Food City 300, delivering the command for drivers to start their engines.

In a state that had been leaning Democrat for several years, Youngkin won a hotly contested election for an open seat last November. It was seen as a potential bell weather for the upcoming midterm elections, with education policy being a hot-button topic at the time. His coming 10 miles over the border into Tennessee to appear at a sporting event could conceivably turn into a reason for any of a number of groups to protest another confluence of sports and politics.

Brandon Brown won last seasons Xfinity playoff race at Talladega, and the post-race interview on NBC was the beginning of the Lets Go, Brandon taunts aimed at Joe Biden by detractors of the president.

Brown played absolutely no role in the episode other than winning the race. Had Joe Gibbs grandson been the winner that day, we would probably instead be talking about Lets Go, Ty now.

In the offseason that followed, however, NASCAR refused to approve a large primary sponsorship deal negotiated between Brown and backers of a cryptocurrency looking to capitalize on the continued popularity of Donald Trump. NASCAR made a point of saying it wanted to distance the sport from politics.

That didnt prevent Greg Abbott from appearing at the All-Star Race, and now Glenn Youngkin will be participating in festivities at Bristol. If there are protests over Youngkins appearance, it will be interesting to see whether NASCAR learned anything from how poorly it handled the reaction to Abbotts appearance.

Fresh off Botching the Gov. Greg Abbott Controversy, NASCAR Faces a New Political Hot Potato at Bristol - Sportscasting

The digital transformation of ground transportation is under way, and as the world opens up again, the demand from travelers for a seamless ground transportation booking experience is growing.

But some suppliers are missing out on this market opportunity. If a bus operator does not have digital distribution capabilities it cannot sell its seats online. Without a brand dotcom or agreements with third parties such as OTAs or retail agents, a suppliers reach and revenue is limited to what it can sell locally, offline. Commercial partnerships with other travel providers such as airlines are not possible.

To change this, operators need a transport management system (TMS), which acts like an airlines Passenger Service System, storing all the operators available seats, prices and availability. This is a prerequisite to being able to make that inventory available for sale by OTAsand third-parties in a scalable way.

As things stand, ground transportation is fragmented. There are some big players on both the supply and distribution side but the vast majority of operators are small and independent. In fact, a vast majority of the businesses in APAC and LATAM are offline and analogue.

Travelers expect online capabilities and booking a bus ticket or ferry ride in advance should be as easy as booking a flight or a room. Until TMSs are more widely taken up by these small, independent businesses to make seats available online, ground transportation will remain the weak link in the travel ecosystem.

The ultimate travel tech goal of end-to-end/one-stop-shop/super-app remains elusive if the bus from the airport to the city center or the ferry to the boutique hotel has to be booked offline and in the moment.

Solving this ongoing obstacle to seamless booking is one focus for TMS providers, but there is more that can be done. TMSs can help ground transportation suppliers to grow their business by transitioning many operational requirements from offline to online. These include: loyalty schemes and rewards, logistics, maintenance, vehicle readiness, mobile office, onboard sales, cargo pickup, staff schedules, route planning, yield management, financial reporting and last but certainly not least data and analytics.

The fragmented nature of the global ground transportation industry means that TMSs need to serve local market needs at the same time as connecting to global systems. There are layers of difference between countries in the same region, and even a single country operator might have different needs from its TMS for different routes. Similarly, operators will want their TMS to give them some degree of autonomy when it comes to third-party sales. The data and analytics functions, for example, can allow an operator to compare and contrast the value and volumes of tickets sold by their distribution partners.

The net result of bringing in a TMS is that operators can sell more seats to travelers, while travelers are likely to have a better experience because the business is run more efficiently. This will lead to higher standards across the industry and also give ground transportation the chance to share its sustainability credentials with a wider audience.

Looking ahead, there is potential for bus operators to position themselves as a more climate-friendly option than flying, but to do this effectively travelers need to be able to book online and to have the information needed at the point of sale. Elsewhere, ground transportation can encourage visitors to experience remote destinations, helping to address overtourism and to spread the economic benefits of tourism more widely.

For ground transportation to get the attention it deserves within the digital travel ecosystem, transport management systems will need to be center-stage. All these benefits the sector can bring to travelers are predicated on speeding up its digital transformation so that operators are more efficient and travelers are better served. With so much of bus and ferry business sector ripe for conversion, the TMS sector will be (the) one to watch.

This follows Indonesian President Joko Widodos decree in January 2022 ordering thousands of mining, plantation and forest-use permits be revoked due to non-compliance or inactivity. The action being taken by the Ministry has no impact on Baru or its operations.

Barus permits and licences have not been revoked and remain valid. Baru is compliant in all respects, with the AMDAL (environmental) assessment and Indonesian feasibility study. Most recently, the Company secured its operation and export licence for the mine site.

The Company continues to conduct its daily activities at the site and on the island. The Company continues to generate jobs, hiring locals to fill these positions. Lawsuit Filed by TMS

The Company also wishes to provide information on a recent lawsuit filed by its subsidiary, TMS. The lawsuit has no connection to the ownership rights above.

On August 24, 2022, TMS filed a lawsuit in Jakarta against multiple parties including President Joko Widodo; the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan; National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo; Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H. Laoly, Komnas HAM; Regent of Sangihe Islands; Mardi Posumah; Grace Kapal; Sonny Posungulah; and Andri Mailoor. TMS is seeking damages to compensate for material losses amounting to US$37 million and Rp. 31.9 billion; and immaterial losses of Rp. 1 trillion.

Baru Gold CEO, Terry Filbert, commented, TMS holds a valid production/operation licence which has the legal right to explore, construct, and produce gold on the island of Sangihe. To clarify, the island is approximately 71,000 ha and our licence for exploration covers 42,000 ha. TMS has applied to have the exploration area reduced to 25,000 ha. Our exploration activities have been conducted on less than 10% of our licenced area and construction has commenced on a small 65 ha parcel. Our construction activities have been continually delayed by a group supported by illegal miners, whose numbers have expanded significantly since the re-start of operations on the island. TMS has received little to no support from the local police or government departments for operational activities or to ensure the safety of our employees and suppliers. Inadequate effort has been made by local officials to close the illegal mining operations on the island. Despite these obstacles, TMS continues to move ahead with its planned activities. ABOUT SANGIHE GOLD PROJECT

The Sangihe Gold Project (Sangihe) is located on the Indonesian island of Sangihe, off the northern coast of Sulawesi. Sangihe has an existing National Instrument 43-101 inferred mineral resource of 114,700 indicated and 105,000 inferred ounces of gold, as reported in the Company's "Independent Technical Report on the Mineral Resource Estimates of the Binebase and Bawone Deposits, Sangihe Project, North Sulawesi, Indonesia" (May 30, 2017). Readers are cautioned that mineral resources that are not mineral reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability. Shakeups are coming, on and off the air, at The Morning Show.

Nicole Beharie, who previously starred in Sleepy Hollow and Little Fires Everywhere, is coming to the set of everyone's favorite daytime television show (and maybe she can bring a little bit of that Hollow magic to this dramatic set).

Beharie is set to play Christina Hunter, a new anchor on The Morning Show who's a "grounded, competitive and charismatic millennial," according to Apple TV+.

"Christina works hard, plays hard, and navigates the Teacup with good-humored irreverence," the streamer says.

Beharie joins previously-announced Morning Show new additions Jon Hamm and Julianna Margulies. Hamm is set to play Paul Marks, who's described by Apple TV+ as "a corporate titan" who sets his sights on TMS' network UBA, pulling "Cory, Alex and Bradley into his powerful orbit." Marguiles, on the other hand, previously played a role in season two of The Morning Show, starring as a TMS anchor who has a connection with Reese Witherspoon's Bradley Jackson; now, she has been upgraded to a major recurring role.

Season three of The Morning Show is currently in production, with Witherspoon recently sharing a sweet photo from set. The selfie showed Witherspoon, sporting Bradley's signature blazer, posing in front of the talk show's set-up.

We can use multiple words to describe one of the most common human experiences: depression.

Reports of people experiencing depression date back several millennia.

One of the most familiar ancient references might be that of King David from the old testament.

He wrote in the Book of Psalms I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears.

Im sure that experience sounds very familiar to anyone who has dealt with a major depressive episode or what those in ancient times called The dark night of the soul.

While the experience of depression has been a constant across the rise and fall of every human culture, how we address the symptoms of depression has certainly changed over time.

Egyptians used physical restraint and starvation to deal with depression.

The Romans tried a kinder, gentler approach using massage, diet, musicand baths.

It wasnt until the early 1900s that the precursors of modern psychological theories began to dominate our understanding of depression and how to treat it.

Freud wrote about mourning and melancholia, where he theorized depression was rooted in anger about a real or perceived loss.

More recent approaches increasingly stress the biopsychosocial model that looks at the biological, psychologicaland social factors that play a role in depression.

As our understanding of depression has yielded incredible progress in treatment options, it is fair to say that modern psychology has yielded effective interventions like psychotherapy and medication that directly improve levels of depression.

The good news is that we no longer use physical restraints or baths to try to help people walk out of the dark night of the soul.

Therapy works. Medication helps people feel better. These are proven facts in the research.

However, the common wisdom in the field suggests that between 20 and 30 percent of people who struggle with depression never find full recovery.

We call this phenomenon treatment-resistant depression and it leaves some professionals scrambling for other treatment options that might help people feel better.

Throughout my early career, there were many times that I struggled to design treatment plans to help people with treatment-resistant depression.

Its so hard to watch some people with depression get better while others just seem to be stuck in a recurring cycle of pain.

I imagine I felt much like an ancient Egyptian or Roman when the warm bath just didnt seem to relieve my patients heartache.

In the last several years, I have spent a considerable amount of my professional energy looking for creative and effective ways to address treatment-resistant depression.

What do you do as a professional when someone is metaphorically worn out from sobbing and flooding their bed with tears?

Thankfully, Im happy to report that we have been able to implement strategies based on research that provides hope for people with treatment-resistant depression.

If you or someone you love is stuck in this never-ending cycle of depression, I want to encourage you with this simple message:There is hope.

You can break free from the chains of depression and begin to live in peace and joy.

Weve started more intensive programs at our LiveWell clinics that combine psychotherapy with medication and other holistic treatments that work to combat treatment-resistant depression.

Of all the unique and creative treatments we offer, let me take the rest of our time here to focus on TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), which is perhaps one of the most exciting new technologies that directly addresses treatment-resistant depression.

TMS is a new technology that has approximately a 70% success rate.

The entire procedure is based on a biological understanding of the cause of depression which suggests that an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain is one of the most significant factors that contribute to the experience of depression.

In short, when looking through the lens of neurology it is clear that brain activity is reduced in people with depression.

Ive included an image of two PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans, which measure vital functions such as blood flow, oxygen use, and blood sugar metabolism that demonstrate just how dramatically brain activity is reduced in depression.

The image on the right is a non-depressed brain.

Notice all bright yellows and greens that reflect the vibrant brain activity of a person who is not currently experiencing depression.

The image on the left of a depressed brain tells a different story.

As you can see, there are hardly any bright colors that indicate healthy blood flow and activation.

Instead, the brain is almost completely dark and lacks any significant activity.

When a client receives a TMS treatment, the brain is mapped to identify areas that are lacking these vital functions and activation.

After a clients unique neurological makeup is identified, the TMS provider uses a highly focused pulsed magnetic field, similar to what is used in a MRI imaging machine, to stimulate cortical neurons involved in mood regulation.

This stimulation physically modulates neurotransmitter release and increases cerebral blood flow and glucose metabolism.

In short, the TMS protocol achieves the same stimulation of neurotransmitters that are encouraged by anti-depressant medications, but it does it in a much more sophisticated and targeted manner.

I sat down with our medical director at LiveWell Behavioral Health, Dr. Parwati Maddali, to ask her a few questions that might help me relay how TMS stimulates the brain and also provide her understanding of the value of TMS from a medical perspective.

As a psychiatrist who has been practicing for decades in the mental health field, Dr. Maddali is in a unique position to talk about the efficacy and benefit of TMS to those struggling with depression.

Here is a snapshot of our conversation that illustrates some of her most important insights.

Q:Dr. Maddali, can you explain the difference between how TMS stimulates a depressed brain as opposed to how an anti-depressant might stimulate a depressed brain?

A: Anti-depressants are designed to increase the stimulation of the brains neurotransmitters similarly to a TMS treatment. While a TMS treatment directly stimulates the brain using electromagnetic stimulation of nerve cells, anti-depressants are systemic, which means they must travel through the entire digestive system and into the bloodstream before they finally end up stimulating the brain.

Although this is a very rudimentary explanation it highlights why anti-depressants come with more side effects than TMS. Many times, my patients who are taking anti-depressants experience side effects like insomnia, headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, fatigue, weight gain, nausea, G.I. distress, and sexual dysfunction.

Because anti-depressants travel through the entire system, the side effects are potentially systemic. TMS on the other hand directly stimulates the brain without involving other bodily systems which will eliminate many of these systemic side effects. The most common side effect of TMS is mild scalp discomfort at the treatment site. So TMS is safe, easy to tolerate, and effective.

Q: Speaking of effectiveness, how effective is TMS in your experience?

A: Medications can typically take 3 to 4 weeks to be effective and can have several of those systemic side effects that Ive mentioned. Especially after psychotherapy and trials on two or three medications have not been effective, I have seen many patients get better with TMS, and it usually doesnt take weeks to see the treatment's impact. Many times we see progress after just several days. Its a great treatment option, especially for people with treatment-resistant depression.

Q: Any TMS success stories youd like to share?

A: Theres one patient I remember, in particular, who made incredible progress with TMS. Before I prescribed a TMS treatment, this young mother encountered many problems getting her depression in check.

It was so gratifying to see this woman, who worked full-time, go from sitting on the couch feeling guilty about how disconnected she was from her kids and career to getting her life back. It was simply gratifying to watch."

After speaking with Dr. Madalli regarding her experience with TMS, it confirmed my own experience professionally, TMS is a great option for many people who are struggling with treatment-resistant depression.

The beauty of TMS is that the research continues to confirm our professional experience. TMS is safe and effective and comes with very few side effects.

Even the major insurance companies agree with the effectiveness of this new technology to treat depression.

Almost every major insurance carrier will cover the treatment, which is, in many ways, the gold standard of the efficacy of a psychological or medical intervention.
