ATLANTAMississippi Gov. Phil Bryant on Saturday urged a small group of college students and others to take up arms in defense of the Second Amendment.

If you think the left isnt coming for your guns, look at Australia, he said. The only thing the left is upset about, the only thing they fear is the Second Amendment.

His remarks came at a college leadership forum during the National Rifle Associations annual convention in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday.

Mississippi has traditionally been a strong gun rights state, but last year Bryant signed a bill allowing permitless carry there. Bryant, a former deputy sheriff, also touted his own gun ownership.

If theres an active shooter at the capitol, Im not going to hide behind my desk, Bryant said. Im going to put some led down range on someone.

Bryant slammed liberals for trying to control gun legislation.

They believe that somewhere they can tell us what to do, Bryant said, adding that liberals want a bureaucracy of control.

That control extends to college campuses, Bryant said, ribbing Greek literature and music appreciation majors he said are the ones most likely to come out to riot.

They wont take away Second Amendment rights, Bryant said. We will not go quietly into the night.

Donald Trump delivers 100 days of 2nd Amendment victories: Chris Cox – USA TODAY

After eight long years, we once again havea president who respects and cherishes individual freedom. For Americas law-abiding gun owners, theTrump administrationis proving to beamongthe best in history. Soits important to take stock of all he has accomplished on behalf of the SecondAmendment inaveryshort time.

Thanks to President Trump,we are now back tohavinga 5-4pro-gunmajority on the U.S. Supreme Court. He appointed Jeff Sessionsas Attorney General, which means the Department of Justicewill return to focusing on prosecuting violent criminals instead oftargetinglaw-abiding gun owners. In Secretary of the Interior RyanZinke, Trump has appointed a man whois firmly committed to protecting hunting and shooting as priority uses on our public lands. In fact,Zinkerepealed one ofBarack Obamas most egregious anti-gun policieson his very first day on the job.

Ultimately, politicians are judged on whether they keep their promises. Forlaw-abidinggun owners, Trump has kept his promises, after running as the most pro-Second Amendment candidate in history.

Soonafter his inauguration, the president nominated NeilGorsuchto the Supreme Court.Justice Gorsuchbelieves in interpreting the law as the Framers intended. He will followthe example of Antonin Scalia, who wrote the majority opinion inthe most important Second Amendment decision inmodern history,District of Columbia v. Heller. That case reaffirmedthatthe Second Amendment protects the right of an individual to keep a firearm in their home for self-defense. Neil Gorsuch willprotect that right.

POLICING THE USA:Alook atrace, justice, media

Sessions will restore the rule of lawto the Justice Department. As our nations chief law enforcement officer,he willwork vigorously to respectindividual freedoms of American citizenswhile making our communities safer by cracking down on violent criminals.

Trump also made good on his promisewhen he nominated Zinketo lead the Interior Department.Zinke, aformer Navy Seal and avid outdoorsman, repealed theObama administration's ban on lead ammo on federal land on his first day in office. He knowsthat Americas sportsmen and women are critical toconservationandunderstands thatmanagementdecisions must recognize the importance of hunting, shooting, and other traditional uses on public lands.

Trump has also acted to protect the self-defense rightsof Social Security beneficiaries, repealing an eleventh-hour Obama rule that banned them.

For all he has accomplished, there is still a lot of work to do.Our fight is not over. But in Trump, we now have a president who trulybelieves in individual freedom.

LETTER: Smart laws to protect Second Amendment rights crucial – Tuscaloosa News

Posted: at 2:45 pm

Mark GrissomNorthport

As a firm believer in our Second Amendment rights, I have legally carried concealed for almost my entire life. I have had training and practice regularly to ensure I can protect myself, my family, and those around me without unnecessary risk to the public. If cost is a factor for those who wish to carry concealed, I would certainly support a waiver of permit fees.

I respect the rights of property owners if they ban firearms; however, I believe they should be held accountable in providing protection.

I am very concerned about the reckless expansion of gun rights into non-permitted carry. My biggest concerns are:

Officers wouldnt have the right to properly investigate persons with firearms on them.

Those with criminal or terrorism intent have a pass to have a readily available firearm, and if caught they can walk away to try again.

Home intrusions, domestic violence, work disputes, and road rage situations are likely to see increased involvement of firearms.

Untrained individuals will place all of us at a significantly greater risk.

In a society becoming more and more emotionally unstable because someone else has a different perspective or opinion, this type of legislating could be dangerous.

Smart laws that protect our Second Amendment rights are crucial to our way of life; putting reckless gun laws in place is the fastest way to create decreased support for the Second Amendment and thus weakens it.

Second Amendment advocates flock to State Capitol – Michigan Radio

Posted: at 1:44 am

Wednesday was the annual Second Amendment March in Lansing. Gun enthusiasts took to the Capitol for speeches and mass open-carrying of firearms.

According to the marchs website, they met for a, peaceful gathering to demonstrate the political strength of Michigans legal gun owners and Second Amendment advocates.

Dean Greenblatt is an attorney in Bloomfield Township. He represents Michigan Open Carry in several pending court cases.

Its just to get the message out that people are interested in securing their rights and letting other people know theyre here, theyre not going away, and theyre not going to be quiet, he said.

The Michigan legislature is currently pondering legislation that would allow for concealed pistol carry without a license. There are also plans for legislation to make registering firearms optional in the state.

Gun control advocates say increased regulations would reduce gun violence.

But Second Amendment enthusiasts like Kimberly Moshier from Oxford, say there are misconceptions about gun owners.

We do it because its our right and we want to protect ourselves and the ones we love, she said. And thats what it boils down to. Not everybody with a guns a bad guy.

I feel revulsion as I continue hearing politicians say they are pro-Second Amendment. As if to say unfettered gun ownership is a constitutional right.

The Second Amendment states, a well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

I am quite certain that in our country citizen gun ownership is not well regulated. In the presence of regulations, people behave differently.

They are held to account when they fail to follow the regulations. So, please, spare me the pro-Second Amendment drivel unless you are going to include the entirety of the amendment and not just the part that helps get you elected.

My Second Amendment rights are being violated.

Zaun: Session saw strides for Second Amendment, schools, economy – DesMoinesRegister.com

Posted: April 23, 2017 at 12:32 am

State Sen. Brad Zaun Published 11:34 a.m. CT April 21, 2017 | Updated 11:49 a.m. CT April 21, 2017

Brad Zaun(Photo: Special To The Register)

This session was a big one not just for me, but for our constituents and all Iowans who wanted to see results. We were not elected for more of the same. We were elected to make big changes and bold decisions.

We were able to bring a number of bills to the floor for debate that had never been previously discussed. These include our overhaul of laws regarding the Second Amendment in Iowa, voter ID and life.

Our focus this session has continually been economic growth and development. We worked to pass several of the priorities we set out the first week of session, including requiring jobs impact statements for administrative rule changes and legislation to help our small businesses and job creators. We passed Senate Joint Resolution 9, allowing the people of Iowa to vote on putting a 99 percent expenditure limit amendment to the Iowa Constitution. This would provide confidence to Iowa families and job creators that the state will live within its means in the same way they must live within their means.

We made a series of changes to regulations in this state with the goal of allowing our job creators to spend less time fending off frivolous lawsuits and focus on expanding their businesses in our communities.

This year we were able to pass supplemental state aid for our schools on time, setting budgets early and allowing school districts more time and predictability to plan their school year budgets. We passed collective bargaining reform, allowing school boards and administrators to reward good teachers and get rid of bad teachers.

We also passed a bill that had been pushed for years transportation equity for our rural school districts. This bill is important to many rural districts across the state as they seek to provide the best education to their students regardless of where they live in Iowa.

Bills were passed to give more local control to school boards and how they spend their money.

We passed common-sense laws supported by a majority of Iowans, such as one of the largest gun bills in recent history, expanding the rights of every gun owner across the state. We were also able to require a government-issued identification in order to participate in one of the most important things you can do as a citizen casting your vote.

This session was a productive one for the people of Iowa. I appreciate all the emails, phone calls and messages this session. In the coming months, please continue to contact me with your questions, concerns and any problems you are having. It is an honor to serve as your state senator.

STATE SEN. BRAD ZAUN, R-Urbandale, represents District 20 in the Iowa Senate, which includes Johnston, parts of Urbandale and Grimes and areas of northern Polk County to Saylorville Lake. He can be reached at brad.zaun@legis.iowa.gov or at the Statehouse at 281-3371.

How will Justice Neil ‘Plain Words’ Gorsuch tackle the Second Amendment? – Chicago Tribune

Posted: April 21, 2017 at 2:07 am

Your news article "Gorsuch dives into the fray on first day emphasized the originalist constitutional legal philosophy of the newest Supreme Court justice. Neil Gorsuch made repeated references to the plain words and plain texts of the law he was considering. He asked, Wheres the ambiguity? And, Wouldnt it be a lot easier if we just followed the plain text of the statute? Like the late Antonin Scalia, Gorsuch claims to decide cases based on the literal words of the law, not its purpose or how it has been interpreted by lower courts.

That brings us to the plain unambiguous text of the Second Amendment: A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. For too long well-regulated meant any firearm any place any time and militia meant individual person.

Your story said the Supreme Court decided to take no action on a California case in which gun owners sued when they were denied a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Eventually the Supreme Court, including Gorsuch, will have to rule on a Second Amendment issue. Then we will see if he actually follows his originalist philosophy and uses the plain unambiguous meanings of well-regulated and militia in his decision. If he doesnt then we can conclude his originalist philosophy is a pretext used only to rationalize his ultra-conservative political ideology just like Justice Scalia before him.

Bob Barth, Chicago
