Bearing ArmsRubio, Jordan File "Second Amendment …

The District of Columbia has long been one of the least-free areas of the United States, with offensive gun control laws that make it nearly impossible for citizens to defend themselves from the many predators that roam the streets of the nations capital.

Florida Senator and presumed Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio and Ohio Representative Jim Jordan are looking to strip D.C.s local government of the authority to pass and enforce the draconian anti-gun laws that have effectively rendered D.C. a gun free zone.

Rubios proposed Second Amendment Enforcement Act of 2015 is narrowly tailored to address the continued spiteful resistance of the right to bear arms by arecalcitrant City Council.

From Rubios press release.

In order to achieve the American Dream, people need to be able to live in safe communities and be able to protect themselves, their families and their properties from danger. The lawful exercise of the Second Amendment is part of what makes this possible, said Rubio. For years, the District of Columbia has infringed on its residents Second Amendment rights and rendered them vulnerable to criminals who could care less what the gun laws are. This legislation will finally allow D.C.s law-abiding residents and visitors access to firearms for sporting or lawful defense of themselves and their homes, businesses and families.

Washington, D.C. has some of the harshest laws against gun owners in the nation,Jordan said. By rolling back unnecessary restrictions and protecting the rights of homeowners to protect themselves, this bill will make Washington, D.C. a safer place for law-abiding citizens, and will restore the original intent of the Second Amendment to our nations capital.

The legislation would:

Sen. Rubio, Rep. Jordan propose repealing D.C. gun control laws

Posted: March 28, 2015 at 11:47 am

Two high-profile Republicans in Congress, Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio), have introduced legislation that would undo the Districts gun laws, which are among the strictest in the nation.

If embraced by Republican leaders of the House and Senate, the legislation could force a Second Amendment showdown with President Obama just two years after he failed an attempt to win stricter gun control laws nationwide.

For the District, the legislation could amount to the most serious challenge to local governance in years. For three decades, the Districts liberal Democratic leadership prohibited any gun ownership in the city. The Supreme Court struck down that law in 2008.

Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, said the legislation is necessary to protect a fundamental right that all Americans should have including residents of the nations capital.

In order to achieve the American Dream, people need to be able to live in safe communities and be able to protect themselves, their families and their properties from danger, Rubio said. For years, the District of Columbia has infringed on its residents Second Amendment rights and rendered them vulnerable to criminals who could care less what the gun laws are.

Jordan, the Ohio representative, said the bill would make the District a safer place for law-abiding citizens and restore the original intent of the Second Amendment to our nations capital.

The Districts unique status as a federal district that Congress oversees has long made it a battleground for social policy fights on Capitol Hill. Those battles have flared especially when Republicans have controlled both chambers of Congress, as they do now. Democrats have regularly accused Republicans of using their oversight of the city to impose their ideological will and score points with their own constituents back home.

It should shock no one that Sen. Rubio, who is widely expected to soon announce a run for president, would try to raise his national profile and conservative bona fides, said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the Districts nonvoting member of Congress. But they should be shocked to hear that he would try to use our local jurisdiction and laws to violate his own support for the principle of local control. Such bullying is not very presidential.

Rubio isnt the only national Republican to draw accusations of imposing presidential politics on the District. The legislation follows a move last week by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) in the days before he announced his run for the presidency to undo two local D.C. laws pertaining to abortion, birth control and gay rights.

With all of this attention, you would think D.C. was going to have its primary with Iowa and New Hampshire next year, said Michael Czin, communications director for D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D). Czin declined to speculate on whether the law could affect public safety, saying he would not deal in the hypothetical of the proposed law passing Congress.

Who's Going After D.C.'s Gun Laws? Marco Rubio Edition.

Posted: at 12:48 pm

Because he's probably running for President and he can, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fl.) is messing with D.C.'s gun laws. Under a bill he introduced with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), all of D.C.'s gun laws would not only be undone, but local legislators would be restricted in their ability to pass any future laws restricting gun ownership.

The bill, whichshockeris backed by the National Rifle Association, would eliminate the District's current concealed carry laws, allowing anyone to more easily obtain a concealed carry permit. Additionally, the bill, dubbed the The Second Amendment Enforcement Act of 2015, would allow D.C. residents to buy handguns from Maryland or Virginia, the latter of which has some of the most relaxed gun laws in the country.

Naturally, local legislators aren't too happy with Rubio and Jordan's bill. It should shock no one that Senator Rubio, who is widely expected to soon announce a run for President, would try to raise his national profile and conservative bona fides, but they should be shocked to hear that he would try to use our local jurisdiction and laws to violate his own support for the principle of local control, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said in a statement. Such bullying is not very presidential."

On Twitter, Councilmember David Grosso (I-At Large) said that "Senators are elected to pass or amend federal laws. If Rubio, Cruz, et al want to pass local laws, they should run for election in [sic] DC."

Of course, this is hardly the first time a politician who does not represent the District tried to meddle with the city's gun laws. Last summer, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced an amendment to a House appropriations bill today to stop D.C. from enforcing its local gun laws. It was ultimately struck down, but a Supreme Court decision led to the District's concealed carry law, in which certain residents can apply for concealed carry permits.
