The perfect date night begins with a game of Delivery Roulette – The Takeout

Dating during a pandemic is a unique experience. When my current boyfriend first slid into my DMs in April 2020, we assumed that it would be no time before we could casually grab a drink to get to know each other. After a couple weeks of texting, as the pandemic got worse and worse, it became clear that we would have to put a hold on our first in-person cocktailboth trying to be as safe as possible, we stuck to just chatting over FaceTime for the early stages of our relationship. But just because we couldnt go on a traditional dinner date didnt mean we couldnt make meals part of the fun.

Delivery roulette is simple. Get your dates address for delivery, see whats nearby, then send them dinner without telling them whats coming. Theyll do the same for you, and when the food arrives you hop on the digital video platform of your choice, unbox your meal, and go from there. You can ask a few questions ahead of time to make sure there are no complete disasters: deathly allergies, dietary restrictions, any ingredients that are a complete no-go. But dont give too much away, because the real joy is in the surprise.

My boyfriend and I first tried this out after a few FaceTime chats and a handful of Netflix Parties (another great form of digital hangout thats reminiscent of the golden days of AOL Instant Messenger). I spotted the idea on TikTok and, always desperate to be a hip TikTok teen, thought we could try it out. Wed had enough time to get to know a little bit about each other and put that knowledge to the test. Reader, we both nailed it.

I sent him a meal from his favorite barbecue place complete with a bottle of their signature sauce, remembering that he had sung its praises in one of our earlier talks. He sent me a meal from a restaurant near an old, beloved apartment of mine, a spot that I hadnt even considered would be within my current delivery radius. We not only both enjoyed delicious meals but were able to acknowledge how the other was paying attention and taking interest in our lives.

The meals dont always have to be so personally aligned to your partner, though. Delivery roulette can be a great way to simply try something new and get you out of your delivery rut. On another occasion, I was sent an incredible jibarito from a neighborhood spot that I had never bothered to tryit soon became a new go-to.

Plus, you just might learn more about the other person in the process. On a whim during one delivery roulette night, I sent my boyfriend a bowl of Caldo Gallego soup from a local Cuban cafe. When he received it he was shocked, revealing personal and family memories based on the soup that may not have come up in our conversations otherwise.

Weve been together for almost two years, and while we are now fully comfortable with seeing each other in person and even dining out at the occasional restaurant, we still keep delivery roulette in our back pocket. Snowed in at our separate apartments? Delivery roulette. Someones got a case of the sniffles? Delivery roulette. Spending time in a different city? Delivery roulette! Its the perfect distanced date idea for every occasion that really proves that the way to someones heart is through their stomach.

China wants the world’s biggest gambling hub to do less gambling – Economy

Posted: at 3:43 pm

How much say should governments get over habits that are fun but can be harmful?

Macau, a special administrative region of China, is famous for its casinos. More gambling goes on there than anywhere else in the world. In 2019, before the pandemic caused business to dip, the gambling industry there was worth $36.7 billion dollars. Thats four times bigger than Nevada, home of Las Vegas. But the Chinese government, which has outlawed betting on the mainland, isnt super keen on this. (The gambling industry was established while Macau was a Portuguese territory, which it was until 1999.)

A new law plans to cap the number of gambling licenses available, and to shorten how long those licenses are valid for. There has also been a crackdown on junkets; people whose job is to entice rich Chinese mainlanders to come play in Macaus casinos. There will be fewer licenses available for them too, and casinos will no longer be able to share revenues with junkets or provide rooms in casinos for junkets to operate out of. China has also arrested the head of Macaus biggest junket firm, on the basis that a junkets role can be read as assisting cross-border gambling, which it decided last year was also illegal.

This sort of set up,where a government begrudgingly allows some gambling but is generally pretty against it,isquite common. America is another prominent example. There, casino gambling is legal statewide in only two states. That's because thething with the gambling industry is that it has big economic benefitsandalso big economic and social costs.

Let's start with the benefits. The gambling business is extremely profitable. That success creates lots of jobs, and also lots of new tax revenue for governments, which can then be spent on useful things like education or healthcare systems. Plus casinos provide something beneficial to many gamblers: fun! There is a thrill to taking our chances on the roulette wheel or blackjack. Up to a point, the pleasure of playingcan be worthwhile even if we ultimately loseour betting money - as long as it's money we can afford to lose, then its not much different to spending our cash on some beers or a cinema ticket or whatever.

The problem, of course, is that its not uncommon for gamblers to lose more money than they can afford to.Plus, gambling firms often make this more likely to happen: they have a financial incentive to exploithuman psychology to push us into making rash decisions we later regret. The question of how much thisis the governments problem, orhow much responsibility the state has to protect us from making bad decisions, is a much-debated question.

Gambling laws have historically been tied up with a lot of social ideas about morality - the idea that betting, regardless of how much you lose, is just an evil thing to do. That could seem over-paternalistic to a lot of modern societies, especially ones with a clear line between church and state. A separate concern is thatthe state can end up on the hook financially when gambling goes south - perhaps via paying for addiction healthcare, or welfare support for the families of people who gamble their life savings away. The more resources governments have to divert to these sorts of issues, the fewer they have to put towards other problems. Some would say that builds a case for societies and governments to have a say in individuals gambling habits.

Basic Rules for Roulette | The Venetian Las Vegas

Posted: February 1, 2022 at 2:18 am

Roulette is an intriguing game that is played throughout the world. The large payoffs that are possible for small wagers stimulate the interest of the expert as well as the novice player, playing Roulette in Vegas.

The rules of Roulette - different players use different colored chips so the bets are not confused. The value of your chips is determined by the price you pay for them. When youre done playing make certain to redeem your chips at the same table you were playing at. Once you leave that table no one will know the value of your chips.

Each spin of the wheel provides a multitude of options for the player. A player may bet on single numbers, rows of numbers, or on adjacent numbers. A player also may play colors, odd or even numbers, among others. A bet on a single number pays 35 to 1, including the 0 and 00. Bets on red or black, odd or even pay 1 for 1, or even money.

Were proud to offer Roulette in three variations. In addition to our popular American-style Roulette game with 36 numbered slots, a 0 and a 00, we also offer our European Roulette, which has a single 0 along with the standard 36 numbers, and is a favorite among our international customers. We also offer an exciting new version, where an additional betting option is added.

The diagram indicates the Roulette rules payout for single chip bets and the many combinations available to you. The dealer will be happy to explain any of them. The exact placement of the chips determine the bet being made. Each player is responsible for the correct positioning of their wager on the layout regardless of whether the bet is placed by the dealer.

Roulette numbers – Understanding the wheel and the table …

Posted: at 2:18 am

Gambling has long gone beyond land-based casinos. Every potential player has the opportunity to join the game at any time. From anywhere in the world and bet on his favourite roulette numbers or spin the slots reels. But the abundance of online casino games is so vast and diverse, how could one choose? Lets talk about one of the most popular online casino games Roulette.

To this day, roulette attracts many players with its simplicity and the opportunity to win an impressive sum of money. However, behind the seemingly simple game mechanics, there are many secrets that were going to have a look at. Roulette, like most gambling games, is based on numbers. Thus, players may come with a series of questions:

As everywhere else, everything comes with experience and roulette is no exception. But, there are some nuances when choosing the best roulette numbers, and we will consider them in this article.

The European roulette wheel has 37 compartments (pockets) featuring all numbers from 1 to 36 and one zero (0). The main difference with the American roulette is that the latter has 38 divisions, including a double zero (00) as well. Taking in mind that the payout for a winning bet is 35-1 for the correct number, it means that players betting in the European roulette have more winning chances! Now lets see the roulette numbers sequence in the different wheels.

In all roulette wheels (European, American and French) the numbers have the same color.

But why do roulette wheels have this odd number sequence? This is one of the best-hidden secrets and also the answer to why roulette is such an amazingly balanced game. Everything is well thought out in order to accomplish four different things:

But studying the wheel you will find some interesting facts. Fore example if you split the European roulette wheel in two halves from the zero, you will notice that on the left side are all the black low numbers and all the red high numbers. At the same time, on the right half are all the high black numbers with the low red numbers. Furthermore, in the 9-number sector 29-7-28-12-35-3-26-0-32 there is no number from the second dozen.

As simple as it may sound, the best roulette bets are the ones that most often help you win at the casino. There are many strategies to win, and we will discuss them in more detail later in this article. So what kind of bets should be placed to win and how to calculate roulette table odds?

There is such type of bets as straight-up bets these are the best numbers, betting on which can provide you with 35 to 1 odds for each swing. With this type of bets you dont win so often, but the payouts are very high. For example, if you place a straight-up bet of $1,000 on one of the best numbers to bet 7, this will help you win $ 35,000. You can leave the roulette table with an impressive win, or you can continue with the next direct bet of $35,000, again on one of the best numbers, which will bring you more than a million dollars win. Impressive, isnt it?

Straight-up bets are risky, but the winnings justify the cost. If you prefer more measured and longer roulette game, then the best option for you is to bet on different numbers. In this type of betting, the winnings are lower, but your chances to win increase, because now you have different combinations of black and red, even and odd winning numbers.

In all roulette versions there are two basic bet types. The inside bets and the outside bets, which are derived from the bet position on the layout table. Inside bets have bigger winning payouts, but less chances, while outside bets have bigger winning chances and less payouts. Here are the inside bets, their winning probabilities and the payouts:

The outside bets which have higher chances of winning and smaller payouts are the most popular among players. Here are the available options:

On the even outside bets (the ones paying 1-1 which are the Colour bet, Odd/even bet and low/high bet) lies the biggest advantage of the French roulette. In case players select one of those bets and the ball lands on the zero (0) they can take advantage of the en prison or the la partage rule.

This means that players will either receive on the spot 50% of their bet (le partage), or they can select to imprison the entire bet (en prison). If the imprisoned bet turns out to be a winner on the next wheel spin, it will be released and the player will recover it without any earnings. Note, that in case the ball lands on zero on the next wheel spin, the player will lose the entire bet. The rule actually lowers the house edge to just 1.35%, which is significantly lower than the 2.7% of the European roulette and 5.3% of the American roulette.

In casinos where the La Partage rule is in play by default the player can indicate that he wishes his original stake to be En Prison. Alternately, he can just accept half of his stake back under the La Partage rule and continue play from that point.

Whatever bet you think is the best or whatever number is the most popular, you should keep in mind that this information will only guide you to the right path, but does not guarantee victory the advantage always remains with the casino.

The house edge, in the European roulette, is 2.7%, while the American roulette which has one number more (the double zero 00) has a bigger casino edge 5.3%. So, it is more difficult for players to win. The winning odds will always vary depending on factors such as the bet you made, the edge of the casino in different variations of roulette, and, of course, luck.

There is of course the French Roulette as well, which has an even less house edge. Note that the word roulette is French and means little wheel. After all, the history of the game shows that it gained popularity right after the french revolution. The roulette cylinder was introduced in a primitive form, in the 17th century, by Blaise Pascal. He was a French physicist, philosopher and inventor. And he fused together popular English wheel games of the time in his quest to create for the perpetual motion machine.

The game of roulette as we know it today started being played a century later, around 1760, in France. And one interesting fact is that the first French roulette had two zeros! But this changed when casinos in Germany which wanted to compete introduced the single zero roulette to attract more clients.

Success in a gambling game like roulette is often associated with luck and chance. Many people, both average players and experts, tried to determine which are the best roulette wheel numbers. It seemed that it was impossible, considering how many numbers on a roulette wheel there are and completely random would always win, but we managed to identify what number hits the most in roulette. The most popular roulette numbers are 17, 23, 24 and 7.

Lets look at them in more detail. 17 is the most popular and best bet on roulette. This is often due to the fact that 17 is located in the center of the roulette wheel. So, 17 is the most frequent winning number on a roulette table layout and the best bet on the wheel. 23 and 24 experienced players also recommend this pair of numbers.

They are located next to each other and quite often turn out to be the best roulette numbers. 7 everything is simple here, players are very often attracted to this lucky number, the world symbol of gambling. These are some of the best and most popular ones, choosing which you may get lucky. All thats left is to try your luck.

Players also have a list of unlucky numbers that many try to avoid. These numbers are 13, 0, 6 and 34. Players dislike numbers 0 and 34 only because of their unfortunate location. Numbers 13 and 6 are considered extremely unlucky and experienced players often recommend to simply avoid them. But, one can only count on luck, and who knows, maybe these numbers will bring luck and become the best bets.

What is the best roulette strategy: Its finally time to talk about roulette strategies. Often, the roulette strategy in many gambling games is related to how the player plans to achieve victory. Some people prefer to bet on the best numbers or just on the numbers that mean something to them. In this case, the chance to win is slight and you will not stay at the table for long. But the win over the casino can be very large.

On the contrary, if someone wants to spend more time at the playing table, his choice is small bets, which, although small, allow you to win constantly. Some players prefer betting numbers that have the lowest winning chances. This way, they increase their chances of winning bigger sums, but this strategy is also quite risky.

Random Number Generators in roulette uses a complex set of technologies. So, each circle of the roulette wheel carries a huge diversity of outcome variations. We tried to inform you about the best numbers, the best strategies and the best bets in roulette. You just have to stick to a range of tips. Also, choose the right strategy for you and hope that your luck will not run out.

The most popular versions of roulette wheel are American and European. The sequence of American roulette wheel numbers is 0, 28, 9, 26, 30, 11, 7, 20, 32, 17, 5, 22, 34, 15, 3, 24, 36, 13, 1, 00, 27, 10, 25, 29, 12, 8, 19, 31, 18, 6, 21, 33, 16, 4, 23, 35, 14, 2 The sequence of European roulette wheel numbers is 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26

Many have tried to determine which numbers are the best in roulette. It seemed that completely random numbers would win more often, but we managed to identify the most likely ones. The most popular numbers in roulette are 17, 23, 24 and 7.

Winning against the American roulette house edge of 5.26% is harder than winning against the European roulette edge which is 2.7 %. Thats why players prefer European roulette.

The strategy in roulette is related to how the player plans to achieve victory. With big straight-up bets, the chance is small, but the winnings will be large. With small bets on various combinations, the sums are not so big, but they allow you to win constantly. The numbers with the lowest odds of winning increase the winning amount, but the risk is high.

Las Vegas Roulette Casinos of 2022 | Where to Play in Vegas

Posted: at 2:18 am

Some of the information outlined on this page may have discrepancies due to COVID-19

Roulette is one of the most popular table games in Las Vegas. People like it for its dozens of betting options and its return value. The return to player (RTP) rating can be more than 98%, depending on the game. Plus, theres plenty of fun at a busy roulette table.

You can find four types of tables in Las Vegas casinos: European Roulette, single zero, double zero, and triple zero. This guide contains all the information you need to play this game in Sin City. We cover table limits, minimum bets, and what casinos offer which game variants.

The following are all the Las Vegas casinos that offer roulette tables. We included the type of game, minimum bet, and amount of tables.

Start Playing With Just $1 At Las Atlantis Casino!

The $1 tables are the cheapest roulette tables in Vegas. But there are also different limits for the type of bets. Outside bets (the spots outside of the numbers area) sometimes have higher limits, while inside bets on a number have lower. Know these limits before you start betting in Las Vegas.

Minimum bets at roulette in Vegas begin at $1 per spin. That means you can put $1 or more at as many spots as you like, up to the table limit. Higher limit games may allow you to spread the minimum wager. For instance, a $5 minimum table might take $1 in five spots.

But $1 tables are hard to find, and most of the tables in Vegas allow minimums of $5 to $25. High rollers can find tables with minimums of up to $1,000. The casinos usually list the limits at the table, and good dealers are happy to explain how they work.

Tables with $5 minimums are the most common roulette tables in Vegas. They give players the most variety of bet options. You can find them offering maximum bets of anywhere from $100 to $1,000.

Below you can find a complete list of all the $5 roulette tables in Las Vegas.

There are also plenty of $10 roulette tables in every casino in town. With these, of course, the maximums are higher, and you can spread your bets even more. Look for maximum wagers of anything from $50 to $8,000.

Below we listed all the $10 roulette tables that you can find in Las Vegas.

There are dozens of ways to make bets, so many tactics and roulette betting strategies are available to players. Here are some tips you can follow to make the best out of your gameplay:

European Roulette (single zero) tables sometimes offer the following rule variations.

En Prison gives you a second chance to recover your highlow, evenodd, or red-black bets if the ball lands on zero.

La Partage gives you some of your even-money wagers back with zero. It increases your RTP to 98.65%.

Roulette betting systems fall into two categories: non-progressive and progressive strategies. With progressives, you use a sequence of increasing or decreasing bets.

Other types of wagers are known as non-progressive or flat bets. Stick with a method for at least one session and see how it works.

Sands roulette has triple zero or 0-00-000. Naturally, your odds are reduced (92.3% RTP) with the extra zeros.

If you are a beginner, we recommend you stay away from these tables, as your chances of winning are considerably reduced. Playing at a European Roulette table will always be the winning choice.

European Roulette and single zero appear to be the same, but there is one major difference. European Roulette has a rule known as la partage. This returns half of an even money bet if the ball lands on zero. It cuts the house edge on red/black, odd/even, and hi/lo to 1.35%. All other bets on both tables have a 2.7% house edge.

Encore, Wynn, and upscale MGM properties are the only ones that offer European Roulette in Las Vegas. The minimum bet at MGM Grand is either $10 or $25. The others all require at least $100 to play.

Payouts on the Outside Bets

On the edge of the table are a series of bets which are outside the 38 numbers on the table. Each of these bets refers to a specific set of numbers or colors. If the ball lands on 0 or 00, youll lose on any of the outside bets.

The outside bets include:

Red or Black This bet pays out even odds (1 to 1) if the ball lands on the color you chose.

Odd or Even This bet pays out even odds (1 to 1) if the ball lands on odd or even, depending on which you chose.

Low or High This bet pays out even money (1 to 1) if the ball lands on 1-18 if you bet low, or if the ball lands on 19-36 if you bet high.

Columns The numbers on the layout are organized into three columns of twelve numbers each. A columns bet wins if the ball lands on one of the numbers in the column you chose. This bet pays out 2 to 1 when you win.

Dozens There are 36 numbers on the table, so you can bet on the first dozen (1-12), the second dozen (13-24), or the third dozen (25-36). This bet also pays out 2 to 1.

You can also bet on specific numbers and sets of numbers on the inside of the layout. These bets win less often, but they pay out more when you do win. The house edge on the inside bets is the same as the house edge on the outside bets.

The inside bets for roulette include:

Straight-up This is a bet on a single number. It pays off at 35 to 1.

Split bet This is a bet on any two adjacent numbers. You place the chip on the line between the two numbers in order to make this wager. This bet pays out at 17 to 1.

Street bet This bet covers three numbers. You place your bet on the line outside of the three numbers in the row where you want to win. This bet pays out at 11 to 1.

Corner bet Some people call this a square bet or a quarter bet. Its a bet on a corner that makes a square, and its a bet on four numbers. A win on this type of bet pays out at 8 to 1.

Five-number bet You can only make one five-number bet, and its the only inside bet that offers different odds from all the others. The problem is that it has a higher house edge, making it the worst bet on the table. This bet is on the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3, and you place the chip on the outside corner line between the 1 and the 0. This bet pays out 6 to 1, but only masochists place this bet.

Six-number bet Some people call this a line bet. It covers two adjoining rows of numbers. It pays out at 5 to 1.

These payouts all have one thing in commonthey pay out less than the true odds of hitting a win. Thats why the casino enjoys a house edge of 5.26% on roulette. Your odds of winning are always less than the payout amounts.

For example, the odds of winning a straight-up bet are 37 to 1. There are 37 numbers on the wheel that lose, and 1 bet on the wheel that will win. But the bet only pays out 35 to 1, not 37 to 1, so the house wins more often than it loses.

A split bet offers you odds of winning of 18 to 1, but it pays off at 17 to 1.

I could list all of them, but you get the idea by now. The casino has an unassailable mathematical advantage on every bet. No betting system or strategy can overcome this advantage.

Of course, in the short run, anything can (and often will) happen. This is called standard deviation, and it explains why some people walk away from the roulette table as winners. The mathematically true results only come around the closer you get to an infinite number of spins.

So the best way to approach roulette is as a lark. Its a fun game. You can relax and socialize while you play. But dont expect to win, because the odds are against you. And if you do win, walk away and smile, because you beat the odds.

Roulette The Past, The Present and The Future – Nerdcore Movement

Posted: at 2:18 am

Roulette is a direct translation of little wheel in French. Originating in 18th century France, many believe that the wheel itself was created by French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal in his failed attempt to defy physics and create a perpetual motion machine.

Forms of Roulette are woven throughout history, from the ancient Romans spinning shields for amusement, to France, the rest of Europe, and then the world landing firmly at the heart of many casinos.

Join us as we take a trip through time, witnessing the history of Roulette, seeing how the game is enjoyed in the modern day, and looking into the future to see just where the classic game could spin next.

The past

Games similar to Roulette have been around for centuries. Soldiers in ancient Rome would relax after battle by playing games that sometimes involved spinning a shield or chariot wheel. Its also said that ancient Greek soldiers would draw symbols on the inside of a shield, put it face-down on the ground and place an arrow next to it. They would then bet on which symbol would stop in front of the arrow.

Despite these games resembling Roulette, as previously mentioned, its France that can truly take the credit for creating the popular game. In 17th century Europe, games called Roly Poly and Even-Odd were extremely popular. Both of these games involved spinning a wheel and betting on the outcome. Blaise Pascal, on top of his many talents, was also known to gamble in his spare time, so its clear that he knew about these games whilst accidentally creating his version of the wheel.

At the time, gambling was illegal in many countries across Europe, but it was thanks to Prince Charles of Monaco that the first form of Roulette gained traction. He used the rising popularity of gaming in an attempt to solve his monetary issues. Due to this, Roulette became popular amongst aristocrats and royalty.

In 1842, two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc, reinvented Roulette, taking the game all around Europe. The brothers had lowered the house edge by taking away the double zero pocket and creating what would later be known as European Roulette. Helping Roulette to gain popularity, and eventually helping to build the iconic Monte Carlo Casino, where Roulette took centre stage.

The present

Roulette had taken the world by storm, and by the time casinos were on the scene, it was a staple game that many could expect to find in the establishment. In 1996, the first online casino to offer automated payouts was created, and Roulette was one of the very first games available to play. In the modern day, there are a variety of online Roulette games available to play, with a Random Number Generator (RNG) generating undecipherable patterns to keep the digital spins of the wheel safe, fair and as random as can be.

The future

The future of Roulette looks bright, as the game remains one of the most popular casino games of all time a popular stable within brick-and-mortar establishments. Online casinos have also embraced the ever-evolving technology, constantly reinventing the classic game. On top of this, theres the live casino. Live Roulette offers you the chance to play the classic game, as well as unique themed versions, with a real-life dealer being streamed from a specialist studio, straight to your device, in real time! This type of immersive gameplay paves the way for the future of what technology has the potential to offer us next, with virtual reality (VR) on the rise, before we know it, we could be standing round a Roulette table, in a casino, without even having to leave our house!

‘COVID parties’ spread the virus on purpose. That’s ‘Russian roulette,’ doctors warn – Union Democrat

Posted: at 2:18 am

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Thinking about intentionally exposing yourself to the coronavirus?

Thinking that you'll probably get away with a mild case and become immune to COVID-19?

You need to think again. Even if you're fully vaccinated.

If you get COVID on purpose, there's no guarantee you'll only get a little sick, though the contagious omicron variant surging now is less likely to put you in the hospital than the previous delta variant.

"The majority of people that get omicron that are vaccinated really do have minor symptoms," said Dr. Marc Larsen, an emergency physician at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City. "It's still playing Russian roulette though. If you get a really severe case, you can't take it back."

And yet, the idea that omicron isn't as deadly as other variants, or doesn't cause severe illness in children, seems to be motivating recent social media chatter about so-called "COVID parties" across the country. They're like the "chickenpox parties" of old where parents exposed unvaccinated children to other sick children so they wouldn't get it as adults when consequences are more severe.

That's a no-no, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

A few days ago, doctors in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley cautioned parents against COVID parties.

This month, Dr. Craig Bunnell, chief medical officer for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, appeared in a video on the hospital's YouTube channel offering similar advice.

"COVID is not a cold. It's a life-threatening disease and people are still dying from it," Bunnell said. "For those who don't actually die, many will be sick for a long time.

"Remember, getting infected with delta didn't have much preventive benefit from getting infected from omicron. So it doesn't mean you'll be protected from the next variant."

Last week, Hanka Hork, a popular Czech folk singer, died after she deliberately got infected with the coronavirus. In the Czech Republic, proof of vaccination or recovery from infection is needed to enter restaurants and entertainment venues.

"Her philosophy was that she was more OK with the idea of catching COVID than getting vaccinated," her son told the BBC.

If you need another deterrent, you might want to see what's happening in Larsen's ER at Saint Luke's, where he is a member of the COVID-19 Response Team.

Think about ERs you've seen on TV. Staff in scrubs hustling about, machines beeping, a couple of police officers there too, because they've brought in a patient in custody.

Now add in waves of people coming in sick with COVID-19.

And the staff taking care of them are gowned up and wearing face shields so they don't get infected. And managers are making sure there are enough people working each shift because so many employees are out sick with COVID.

And every emergency department in the city is on "high volume" status because of the coronavirus.

And the COVID cases keep coming.

That's real life now.

Saint Luke's allowed a reporter and photographer from The Star into the hospital off the Country Club Plaza one afternoon last week to see the fallout of the COVID surge.

"It seems like every day is the same as the previous day. It's Groundhog Day in the emergency department, and really health care," Larsen said. "We've been doing this really since March 2020 and it's been a long couple of years.

"And every time we come to work we think maybe we're going to be past it, maybe today will be a slower day. And every day seems to be kind of the same.

"It's so frustrating. We see the same thing over and over. And people are sick and sick and sick."

So the idea that people would intentionally expose themselves to COVID makes Larsen adamant.

"I still encourage everybody to avoid getting it and to do everything they can to avoid it right now."

Every emergency department in the Saint Luke's system there are 16 hospitals has been boarding patients for the last one to two weeks, Larsen said. That happens when there are no hospital beds upstairs for patients who need to be admitted from the ER.

Lately some patients have been waiting in beds in hallways or in chairs that convert to beds, whatever can be pressed into service, Larsen said. "But it's exhausting. And we just need everybody to understand where we are right now," he said.

Some of that backup is caused by COVID patients staying longer in intensive care. "They stay in that ICU for 27 days on average right now," Larsen said. "There's a lot of patients that are exceedingly sick by the time they show up."

Some patients, either out of denial that they have COVID or fear of being in the hospital, don't come in until they're in critical condition, further taxing the emergency department.

"That means we have to quickly assess them and resuscitate them, get them on the oxygen supplies and everything else we can do to help them with their breathing," he said.

Sometimes that means performing the delicate task of intubating someone pushing a breathing tube into their windpipe to help them breathe without knowing, for instance, if they have a stomach full of food, which puts them at risk of vomiting.

But if you're so sick you can't breathe, go to the emergency department, said Larsen, who does not want to leave the impression that emergency departments are so busy that they can't see anyone.

"If they're having shortness of breath, if they're having severe chest pains, if you're feeling like you're going to black out, if you have major trauma, broken bones, major lacerations, severe abdominal pain, those are all indications to come to the emergency department," he said.

He said the hospital is seeing a lot of patients who were able to avoid COVID but have now been infected by, presumably, the highly contagious omicron variant.

Larsen himself just recovered from what he called a mild case of COVID. Everyone in his family got it. His wife, who also works in health care. Their three children under the age of 9. All the kids are vaccinated and he and his wife are vaccinated and boosted.

He had a sore throat for one day.

"Those that are vaccinated or boosted are really having pretty minor symptoms. And my hope is ultimately, as we continue to get vaccinated and get exposed, that they develop that natural immunity to it as well and it becomes just a minor cold, just like we would with anything else," he said.

"The problem is that there's still a large percentage of the population that is not vaccinated. And until they get either COVID or get the vaccine, they're not going to have the immunity to have that happen."

Which casino games win the most money for the house? – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 2:18 am

When the Nevada Gaming Control Board announced Thursday that the states more than 400 largest casinos won more from players in 2021 than in any year in history, it also disclosed which table games and which slot machine denominations won the most for the house.

Its no surprise that blackjack continues to be the most popular table game in the casino, but the No. 2 game is somewhat of an eye opener: roulette.

Even with new variations of the game that include more double and triple zeroes, roulettes 424 units statewide collected $428 million, a 103 percent increase over last year. Roulette hold by the casinos was at 19.87 percent.

Both tables and slots showed a different mix than we have seen in previous years, said Brendan Bussmann, director of government affairs for Las Vegas-based Global Market Advisors. This is in part due to preference of the current customer and their enthusiasm for different games and the level of play. One of the biggest increases was on roulette, which could be for a host of reasons including customer preference and new versions of double- and triple-zero playing a role.

The states 1,958 blackjack tables by far the largest segment of table games won $1.13 billion from players for the calendar year. That was 75.8 percent more than what casinos won a year ago. Blackjack tables won 14.1 percent of the amount of bets wagered.

The most popular slot machine denomination in 2021 was the penny slot, with 47,822 units across the state. They won a total $3.758 billion from players last year, a 59.7 percent increase over 2020, and those machines held 9.85 percent of the money put into them.

State coffers get boost

The amount of money held either at a table or by the slot is counted as gross gaming revenue for the casino, and thats the amount that is taxed by the state and funneled to the general fund.

In the first half of the 2021-22 fiscal year, through Wednesday, the state has collected $570.8 million in percentage-fee collections paying for a multitude of state services. Gaming tax collections are up 31.1 percent over the first six months of the 2020-21 fiscal year.

Casinos also pay a per-unit fee as part of their licensing.

The Control Board monitors gaming win on table games and slot machines by market. Statewide, win on all slots was up 0.25 percent and on tables, up 0.65 percent. The slot win percentage has decreased only three times in the past 25 years.

So, if youre a believer that slot machines are getting a little tighter, youd be right, although with such a low percentage increase and the high volume of slot revenue, the change should be imperceptible to the average player.

There was a little movement the other direction on some games in markets in Southern Nevada.

Slot win was down 0.17 percent in Laughlin. Table game win percentage was down 0.34 percent in downtown Las Vegas and down 0.44 percent in North Las Vegas. The biggest year-over-year change occurred in Mesquite, where table win in that market was up 1.31 percent.

Back to the slot denominations and table games. So given the numbers, what games should you consider playing to potentially get the biggest bang for your buck?

The lowest casino win percentage among slot machine denominations and thus the highest win percentage for players is for nickel slots. Casinos collected 5.31 percent of the money that went into the machines with $42.4 million brought in from 1,035 nickel slot machines statewide.

Other good options are $5 slots, which casinos kept 5.48 percent of coin in, and $25 slots, 5.71 percent. There are just 721 $5 slots statewide and 174 of the $25 denomination.

The worst bet by the numbers was the earlier noted penny slots with 9.85 percent hold and the popular quarter slots, from which casinos kept 8.04 percent from the 3,568 units statewide.

At tables and other games, casinos would love for you to play 3-card poker where casinos held 31.53 percent of the amount wagered. The states casinos won $106.8 million on 174 3-card poker units statewide.

What might be the best bet for the player? The good, old sportsbook, where casinos kept 5.46 percent of money wagered in 2021. The states books won $445.1 million from the 176 places in operation. Sports betting revenue was up 69.4 percent over the previous year.

Craps, a game generally viewed as having a better player edge than most other table games, won $407.7 million on 319 tables, an increase of 54.4 percent over last year. The casino win percentage was 15.37 percent for the year.

The future outlook is bright, Bussmann said.

This record year shows that strength of Nevada as a gaming state and a destination, he said. While we are still not back to 2019 in many aspects, gaming had a roaring year of success in 2021.

The strong results show that the Strip and downtown Las Vegas have potential for still more upside, Bussmann said, noting business and international customers have yet to return.

While there should be some caution as economic forces continue to put potential headwinds on gaming revenue, there is still room for growth as these segments have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.
