Opinion: Urban-rural divide getting wider and damaging the Conservatives – North Shore News

Posted: September 29, 2021 at 7:05 am

Just as the last two B.C. elections showed, the federal election revealed the deepening divide between urban and rural Canada.

This growing divide spells bad news for centre-right political parties that struggle to connect with younger and more diverse voters whose issues are largely tied to the affordability challenge that comes from living in urban and suburban areas.

Any electoral map shows why: there are more ridings in metro areas than there in the outlying regions.

B.C. has 42 federal ridings and 28 of them are in Metro Vancouver and the Capital Region, with three more right on the edges. In last weeks election, the Conservative Party won just two of the urban ridings and three more that are on the outer edge of Metro Vancouver and extend well into the Interior.

The Conservatives lost two seats in Richmond, one in the Tri-Cities and one in Surrey-Langley. They also saw their vote drop in a number of other urban seats (something that can be partly attributed to the low voter turnout).

The partys elected representation has been pushed to the edge of Metro Vancouver in places like Abbotsford, Mission, Maple Ridge, Chilliwack and White Rock. All other ridings are in the Interior and the North.

The Liberals won all 25 ridings in Greater Toronto, nine out of 10 in Ottawa, 22 of 24 Montreal ridings and all the ridings in Halifax. On Vancouver Island, which used to occasionally elect Conservative or Reform Party MPs, the NDP won all but one of the seven ridings.

The Liberals even won seats in Calgary and Edmonton, and the Conservative share of the popular vote in Alberta dropped by more than 10 percentage points.

All this spells bad news for the Conservatives and presents a monumental challenge for party leader Erin OToole, or his potential replacement.

Voters in urban and suburban areas care about issues such as child care, transit, housing and other ones tied to affordability. They support laws that restrict guns and have higher vaccination rates against COVID-19 than voters in rural areas.

OTooles campaign stumbled on those two issues the gun registry and mandatory vaccinations near the end of the campaign and they may well have cost his party those four ridings in Metro Vancouver.

The Conservatives now have to pick a lane and stay in it.

Do they veer even more right to appease their supporters on that side of the political spectrum? That would pretty well guarantee a shutout in the riding-rich cities.

Alternatively, do they move towards the political centre (where OToole appeared to be headed at times) to woo urban and suburban voters? That seems like it would be a tough trick to pull off, as the Liberals and NDP have been occupying that turf for a long time.

In any event, the Conservatives have discovered what the BC Liberals discovered in the 2017 and 2020 provincial elections.

In each contest, the BC Liberals (essentially, a center-right coalition party) found themselves increasingly banished from much of Metro Vancouver. Of the 45 ridings in that area (not counting Chilliwack), the NDP won 36 of them in the last election, plus six of the seven ridings in the Capital Region.

That urban-rural divide is real, it is deepening and is bad news one side of the political spectrum in particular.

Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC.

WATCH: William Lee Golden and the Goldens’ ‘Come and Dine’ Is a Celebration of Family and Friends [Exclusive Premiere] – Taste of Country

Posted: at 7:05 am

William Lee Golden couldnt take another piece of bad news.

His sons,Rusty, Craig and Chris, were mourning the loss of their mother while the famed Oak Ridge Boys member with the iconic white beard was mourning the loss of his first wife and high school sweetheart. And due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the world was mourning the loss of far, far too many.

Goldenhad to find a way to escape; he had to find a way to heal. So, he headed into the studio with his family.

I had a vision to do this for, like, three years, but I could never get everyone together at the same time, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member explains in an exclusive interview. The pandemic allowed us to get in the studio together, and that was a blessing for many reasons, but partly because I think we all had to find a way to get away from television and get out of the house. It was just too much negative and hate and violence coming from every direction.

Indeed, it was something of a therapeutic exercise for Golden to reminisce on better days by listening to and re-creating the uplifting and inspirational music of the past.

To me and to my family, and to all the guys that were helping us sing and play, it was a chance for us to go in and do something positive and get lifted up," Golden says. "There was a negative situation occurring outside the doors, but it was a negative situation that we had no control over.

One of those uplifting and inspirational songs was the 1917 hymn Come and Dine. Their rendition is premiering exclusively via Taste of Country and The Boot; press play below to listen.

This song took me back to my childhood, and I wanted to take my sons back there with me. It took me back to where I came from, says Golden. "Come and Dine" is the first single to be released from the collection of albums he and his family created together:Old Country Church Gospel, Country Roads: Vintage Country Classics and Southern Accents: Pop & Country Rock, allset for release in early 2022.

Goldenstill remembers those days, growing up with his family on the Alabama/Florida state line, where songs including "Come and Dine" would fill the home.Thats how we spent our time, listening to music and playing music and, of course, singing music, recalls the artist, who recently told his life story in the book Behind the Beard.

When all was said and done, Golden and his sons had recorded a total of 32 songs, 12 of which were old gospel songs and 10 of which were classic country songs.I wanted my kids and grandkids to go back to the songs that touched them, says Golden, who also enlisted his grandchildren Elizabeth, Rebekah and Elijah and friends Aaron McCune, Ben Isaacs and Michael Sykes for the sessions.

Together, we could bring these songs back to life and put our feelings within each and every one of them," Golden continues. "We respect the writers for writing songs that touched us, so it's a way to honor them while healing ourselves in the process.

A music video for"Come and Dine" finds Goldenjoining together with three generations of family and friends for a hearty, home-cooked meal or was it?

Well, to be honest with you, my wife ordered that from Cracker Barrel, and then we put it in our own dishes, Golden admits with a hearty laugh. That's what really happened" and itwas perfectly fine with him.

Weve been all shut down from having family over for a while. We've been shut out of church so we can't get together and sing songs, Golden concludes. But now, we can come together in this moment and have a reason to celebrate.

Why should Michael D have to go to service in the North? – Independent.ie

Your leader column on Saturday outlines succinctly a major event in Irelands history that is still reverberating. You correctly state: And so, a century later, we find ourselves once again in heated exchanges over the establishment of Northern Ireland.

his need not be so. It is beside the point whetherMichael D Higginsshouldbe in attendance at the mixed denominational religious service commemorating the establishment and history of Northern Ireland.

It is right, however, that Queen Elizabeth should be in attendance. She is the head of the Church of England. PresidentHiggins is not a religious leader,so why should he participate?

Archbishop Eamon Martin is Catholic Primate of Northern Ireland and Ireland and will be participating in this religious ceremony. That is surely enough Irish representation, North and South.

Perhapsthe powers that bein Romemight consider making the Catholic Primates office in Armagh the head of the Catholic Church for Northern Irelandand create a new office of Catholic Primate for Irelandexcluding Northern Ireland.

Even though 100 years late,it would be a concrete conciliatorygesture of recognition to the people of Northern Ireland and Queen Elizabeth.

SOMETIMES a messianic, neutral third party can bring the most obdurate sides together.

Can we not imagine leaders and former leaders of the DUP and Sinn Fin with the current Irish Government and its British opposite being led by Queen Elizabeth and President Higgins as they all line-dance on Rockall to the charming music of Garth Brooks?

Would that not satisfy all the egos involved?

THE greyhound community is a family community of peoplewho have been meeting on a constant basis, week in, week out, for generations. It is like any club GAA club, golf club, bridge club and so on. Life-long friendships are formed.

There are people who act against the law in any sport, including greyhound racing.

However, people who own greyhounds know that unless your dog is well-cared for,it will not perform.

I am aware there are pros and cons in every debate and we are in a time when misinformation is rife.

If the hobby of greyhound racing is stopped, one would have to ask the question:Whats next?

THE Government is concerned with the huge price increases being levied on gas and electricity.

It is a great pity that, when they were merrily dismantling the ESB and handing the sector over to the market, those predicting that more expensive energy charges would result were ignored.

Here is another prediction:not only will we have to suffer the huge hikes in the cost of energy we use,but we will have to pick up the tab as the Government uses our moneyto save companies and their profits. These days, the ordinary Joe never seems to get a break.

Why The Go-Go’s ‘Flipped Out’ About Their Rock Hall Induction – Ultimate Classic Rock

Posted: September 20, 2021 at 8:43 am

The questionof whether the Go-Gos would be able to perform at the upcoming Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonyhas finally been put to rest. Drummer Gina Schocktells UCR during an exclusive interview that while they were initially "flipped out," everything is sorted and all five members will be in attendance.

Whenthis years inductees were initially announced in May, fans realized that Go-Gos vocalist Belinda Carlisle was already booked for a solo performance overseas on Oct. 30, the same night the group was being enshrined.

Schocksays they moved swiftly to eradicate the issue. Oh my God, we were flipped out, she tells UCR. Belinda was flipped out. She was having a fit. But we just left it up to management to take care of it. I just tried to put it out of my head, because I just wouldnt let myself go there.

Calling it a once in a lifetime event, the drummer knew there was no point in getting worked up about the conflict. You do all of this fretting and worrying and then it just sort of takes care of itself, doesnt it? she laughs. Thats the way it is with just about everything with this band.

Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear name-checked thebandduring a recent Rolling Stone interview, recalling that the Germs, the Los Angeles punk band in which he cut his musical teeth, shared an unsavory reputation with the Go-Gos, who were beginning their hard-fought ascent to stardom but still slugging it out in the local clubs.

When the Germs first started, we were known as the worst band with the worst musicians in the L.A. scene,Smear told the magazine. We got better, and the Go-Gos picked up that title, which is what I love about this years Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions.

You know, he knows, we all came from that punk scene. Nobody was giving us any props back then, but we were part of a scene that was exploding, Schock explains. We kept getting bigger followings and we kept practicing more and more. We got better and better at what we did. Things just started happening.

Decades later, both sides are having the last laugh, as the Go-Gos nab their Rock Hall induction at the same time Smear is going in as a member of the Foo Fighters.

Schock remains unapologetic aboutthe band's early days quite appropriate for a bunch of punks an ethos that remains an important part of their DNA. We were just who we were. We couldnt be anything else. We werent great musicians, she says. We didnt try to pretend that we were. We would just go out on stage, play our songs and have a great time [and] interact with the audience.

Wrong notes be damned, it didnt matter to their fans, who took to what they were doing in a big way. Our audiences, they always just loved whatever we did, Schock explains. You know, Belinda singing off-key, so fuckin what! Nobody cared.

It still happens, she adds. Nobodys perfect, you know?

An avid photographer from her earliest days of going to see her favorite bands a dizzying list that includes the Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and nearly any other classic rock band you might want to name Schock kept her camera busy throughout the glory years of her own band as well.

Made in Hollywood: All Access with the Go-Gosshowcases four decades of moments from her collection, paired with written recollections from Schock, her bandmates and musical peers. As actress Jodie Foster outlines in her own memories for the book, the group had fun duringits reign of terror in the 80s. It was an instant pajama party with those wild, mouthy girls, she writes.

TheGo-Go's released Club Zero, their first new music in nearly 20 years, last year, in connection with a documentary about the band. Theyve got shows on deck later this year following the Rock Hall induction, and Schock admits that shes always surprised how the bandcarries forward, moving past any farewell plans or obstacles that might pop up.

It wont go away, she says, when looking at how achievements and projects continue to build and add to the groups legacy. Were a family and were close. We really are. We put up with a lot of crap from each other, but ultimately, we always iron it out and work together. We really do. Everybody cares about each other in this band, I think.

Its the music that ultimately fuels those everlasting friendships, melting any tense moments. It fades away, when you actually get in the room with somebody and pick up your instrument and start playing, she says. You start smiling and feeling good. Like, this is what were here to do, lets do it!

Reunited Faces Returned to the ’60s and ’70s For Inspiration – Ultimate Classic Rock

Ron Wood is offering more details about the new Faces songs he's been working on with Rod Stewart and Kenney Jones. Turns out, much of the material originated from the band's original time together.

Woods says they collaborated at the same time the Rolling Stones were preparing an extended rerelease of 1981's Tattoo You, so he found himself updating material from two separate but very interesting vaults.

Ive just had the best seat in the house, Wood told Rolling Stone in a newly published interview that took place before the recent death of Charlie Watts. Weve been doing old Stones songs from way back when that were never released and I went straight from that to working with Rod on Faces songs that were never released from exactly the same time, the late 60s, early 70s. And from both bands, we managed to find some gems that are just timeless.

Wood now says over the coming months or years, we'll be releasing some great stuff for people to enjoy the same way that were enjoying discovering them again.

He added that it was such an adventure during lockdown to spend a month or so engaging again with songs that Id completely forgotten about or ones that were placed on the back burner. I thought, Wow. Now is the time for these to come out again because they are timeless.

Asked to compare Stones singer Mick Jagger with Stewart, Wood said they love genuine support. They like to hear, Hey, man, you did a good job, because theyre selling it. Jagger is doing his Jagger, and Rod is doing the Rod, but underneath they want to know that theyre on the right track because they value what they do really importantly. The first thing to them is how to please the audience and to give the best the best show, the best album, the best presentation of music.

Wood also discussed the Faces' late-period classic Ooh La La, specifically what a key lyric I wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger meant to him today.

I wish I knew that all the promoters were ripping me off," Wood said. "Its like, Oh, my God. Those guys opened up a supermarket and a chain of restaurants, and Im on 50 quid for the week or something. Its like, Wow, I wish I knew then what I know now. It can be funny. Thats life on lifes terms, you know?

From AC/DC to ZZ Top, from 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' to 'London Calling,' they're all here.

Anyasa is bringing Indian traditional music and electronic sounds to the world – Mixmag

Posted: at 5:56 pm

The idea was to create an authentic sound. A sound that embraced my Indian roots and brought classical vocals to the global electronic music stage. Through a combination of previous connections and fresh discoveries on Instagram, I narrowed down four amazing singers and songwriters - Isheeta Chakravarthy, Bawari Basanti, Avneet Khurmi and Amira Gill. I also tried to capture that progressive essence, that was my gateway to electronic music back in the early 00s.

Isheeta Chakrvartys voice has graced title soundtracks for a number of Bollywood blockbusters. She trained in Hindustani Classical music before collaborating with Indian jazz icons like Carlton Kitto and Louis Banks. Bawari Basanti started to learn classical music aged nine when her grandmother would teach classes in their family home. She later studied Hindustani Music and attended Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music to learn performing arts.

Amira Gill is a vocalist and songwriter from New Delhi, India. She attended the world renowned Berklee College of Music. She writes original music in English, Hindi and Punjabi, with a rich vocal style that covers soul and R&B as well as Indian Folk music.

Avneet Khurmi was brought up in Chandigarh, India but is based in Amsterdam and has had several big Indian hits in the Punjabi folk style and collaborated with the huge Indian producers like Nucleya and Lost Stories.

With a history reaching back over 6000 years, Indian classical is one of the earliest formal music systems and one of the richest. Yet while it is an obvious resource, still a relatively small number of homegrown Indian artists have managed to authentically fuse modern house or techno with this rich mine of traditional sounds.

While we are discussing history, its hard to underestimate the importance of Goas place in Indian and global dance music.

In the late 80s or early 90s many British and Northern European DJs and ravers had a stark choice when wanting to escape the dreariness: Goa or Ibiza. Some went for both, doing summer seasons in Ibiza and then heading to the tropics for winter despite stories that it sometimes got so hot it would melt your records. In Goa they would find parties and raves of unreal proportions, often lasting as long as a week with people from all over the world dancing on beaches and deep in the jungle. Sven Vth spent a lot of time there partying and playing. The place even has a genre named after it: Goa Trance.
