Apples concessions in China reportedly include a secret $275 billion deal and one odd change in Maps – The Verge

Posted: December 10, 2021 at 6:44 pm

Tim Cook has pushed Apples value within close range of $3 trillion, and a lot of that has to do with the former operations leads ability to manage a relationship with China, where many of its products are made and, increasingly, many of them are sold. A report this week from The Information relies on unnamed sources and internal documents to peel back some of the details about Apples ties with China.

That includes a request Apple reportedly received in 2014 or 2015 about a small group of uninhabited islands that China and Japan apparently have a dispute over in terms of who owns them. Going by either the Senkaku Islands or the Diaoyu Islands, depending on which side of the argument youre taking, they inspired a request from China to members of the Maps team to make them appear larger, even when viewers are zoomed out on the map. According to The Information, not only did Apple eventually make the change, but even today, for viewers using its map from within China, the islands are still shown at a larger scale than the territories around them.

The report also details disputes over everything from iTunes and iCloud to Apple Pay. The figure that looms over everything is a 1,250-word memorandum of understanding that The Information says Tim Cook signed during a publicized trip to China in 2016. The way its laid out, Cook went to China because of repeated regulatory actions affecting Apples business. By signing a five-year agreement (with an option to extend to a sixth year) promising investments, business deals, and training in China, worth an estimated $275 billion, the aim was to avoid further disruptions.

And as The Information has confirmed from its sources, that seems to have mostly held true. The report points out data from the analysts at Counterpoint Research who said that in October, Apple became the largest smartphone brand in China, a title it hadnt held in six years. Meanwhile, Apple has built new R&D centers in the country and started storing iCloud data for Chinese users there.

However, that relationship also has downsides, with critics questioning the companys commitment to privacy its Private Relay feature will not be available in China and business dealings with companies accused of links to Uyghur forced labor. Thats before we mention the other visible concessions that harken back to that decision about the disputed islands, like the numbers Apple wont let you engrave on an iPad in China and takedowns of certain apps.

After the report surfaced, the South China Morning Post reports (via Apple Insider) that a state-run tabloid in China referred to it as McCarthyism, claiming it was an attack clearly driven by the political correctness of Sinophobia.

Cambo, an Oil Project off Scotland, Is Halted by Owner – The New York Times

Posted: at 6:44 pm

An oil project off the coast of Scotland that had become a test of Britains environmental credentials was shelved by its main owner on Friday.

The decision to halt Cambo, as the oil field is known, is a huge win for environmental groups like Greenpeace, and a blow to the North Sea oil industry. It comes just over a week after Shell, which owns 30 percent of the project, pulled out of the investment.

We are pausing the development while we evaluate next steps, said Siccar Point Energy, a London-based company that is backed by private equity firms, including Blackstone, the financial management giant.

Siccar Point said it had planned to invest $2.6 billion in Cambo, and had already spent $190 million on the field since acquiring it in 2017. The firm said that developing Cambo, a potentially valuable source of oil and natural gas, would have created 1,000 jobs.

Environmental groups, on the other hand, said that starting new drilling projects was not compatible with Britains goals on tackling climate change and reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The British government has been considering whether to let Cambo go ahead.

Located northwest of Scotlands Shetland Islands, Cambo became a target of protests, including at the recent United Nations climate summit in Glasgow. Scotlands top politician, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has said she did not think it should be given a green light.

On Dec. 2, Shell said it would not go ahead with investment because the economic case was not strong enough.

Shells decision, which was also prompted by the potential for delays from protests and lawsuits, led Siccar Point to decide it could not progress on the originally planned time scale, the firm said.

Canary Islands Government modifies regulation of the maximum allowed capacities and closing hours of establishments and other public spaces : The…

Posted: at 6:44 pm

The schedules and capacity limits now in force are as follows, in general:

Likewise, it was agreed that these hours and set capacities for each Alert Level may be increased in establishments and activities that make use of the voluntary Covid Certificate request framework, which will come into effect on Friday throughout the Canary Islands. Allowing establishments and activities to benefit from restrictions at one level lower than established at the time for the island in question.

This means that the closing hours and licensed client capacity of those establishments and activities using the covid certificate will be as follows:

This modifications will be applicable from midnight on December 15, 2021 until 24.00 hours on January 10, 2022, without prejudice to the possibility being extended depending on the epidemiological situation.

The modification of schedules and capacity is in response to the current epidemiological situation, with a sustained rebound in the spread of SARS-CoV2, based on Decree Law 11/2021, of September 2, which states that the limiting measures that make up the various Alert Levels may be temporarily lifted or totally or partially modulated by the health authorities in territorial areas, depending on the epidemiological situation.

The proposal approved by the Governing Council also establishes that the consumption of food and beverages will be allowed in gaming and betting establishments and venues during all opening hours.

However, at Alert Level 4, which has not been modified by the Governing Council, closing hours of establishments remain at no later than 1:00 a.m. and with a maximum capacity allowed of 33% outdoors. and 25% indoors. In the event that any island is designated Level 4, the establishments using the COVID certificate will be able to benefit from 2:00am closure and outdoor capacities of 50% and 33% indoors.

Although not been modified in todays session, it was highlighted that the current measures establish maximum groups of people in spaces for public and private use, whether indoors or outdoors, except for those living together, as follows:

As in the case of capacity and closing hours, these limits remain, however for those establishments that properly implement the COVID certificate framework, the measures at the level immediately below that of the island in question will prevail.

St. Regis & EDITION Coming To Red Sea, Saudi Arabia (With Overwater Bungalows) – One Mile at a Time

Posted: November 21, 2021 at 9:22 pm

Marriott plans to open two luxury hotels in Saudi Arabia, and Im almost tempted but not really.

Marriott has signed an agreement with the Red Sea Development Company to develop two new luxury hotels (a St. Regis and an EDITION) as part of the Red Sea Project in Saudi Arabia. The Red Sea Project is one of the first giga projects announced by Saudi Arabias government, as part of the countrys plan to become more of a tourist destination. This massive project covers 28,000 square kilometers on the west coast of the country, and includes an archipelago of more than 90 natural islands.

Rumor has it that Saudi Arabias alcohol ban and other restrictions might not apply with this project, as the goal is to create a destination with international appeal.

Lets get into the basics of what we know about the two hotels.

The St. Regis Red Sea Resort is expected to open in 2023, and will be the brands first property in Saudi Arabia. The hotel will be on a private island, and will feature 90 villas, two signature restaurants, an outdoor pool, a fitness center, a spa, and a club for kids. As you can see based on the picture, it looks like the resort will feature overwater bungalows.

The EDITION Red Sea Resort is expected to open in 2023, and will also be the brands first property in Saudi Arabia. The hotel is expected to feature 240 guest rooms, including one, two, and three bedroom suites. The hotel will have two signature restaurants, a destination bar, a beach bar, a fitness center, a swimming pool, and a spa.

Marriott plans to open a St. Regis and EDITION as part of the Red Sea Project in Saudi Arabia. The renderings of the properties look great, though of course the properties being in Saudi Arabia will likely be a turnoff to many.

Marriott isnt the only hotel brand developing new luxury properties in Saudi Arabia. Back in 2019, Aman announced plans to open three resorts in Saudi Arabia in 2023.

So, whos planning their Bonvoy getaway to Saudi Arabia?

True story of the Gucci ‘Black Widow’ played by Lady Gaga in new biopic – Mirror.co.uk

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Superstar Lady Gaga had to dig deep for her latest role playing The Black Widow who hired a hitman to kill the heir to the Gucci empire.

Actress and singer Gaga, 35, refused to meet with Patrizia Reggiani, not wanting to be seen to endorse her crime.

Instead, the star drew on her own history of abuse to harness a depth of emotion needed for her most demanding part to date.

Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, says: There are a lot of things Ive been through in my life, traumatic experiences, that I drew upon to play Patrizia.

This week, cinema fans can see the results in House of Gucci the much-anticipated tale about the family at the heart of the famous fashion label.

Patrizia, 72, is said to have been pleased Gaga played her.

She still lords it in Milan, some 25 years after ordering the hit on her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci, 46.

Image:

He was gunned down on the steps of Via Palestro 20, his offices in Milan, as he arrived for work on March 27, 1995.

Just one word was written in Patrizias diary on the day of the assassination paradeisos, or paradise.

Maurizio was head of the fashion house. He was the son of actor Rodolfo Gucci and grandson of the companys founder Guccio Gucci.

Patrizia was implicated in his death after an unexpected tip-off to police.

Image:

She paid 250,000, saved from the monthly allowance Maurizio gave her after their acrimonious divorce, to have her husband killed. If its the last thing I do, I want to see him dead, she reportedly once told a housekeeper.

Patrizia was arrested two years later and her five-month trial, which she attended dressed head-to-toe in Gucci, caused a sensation.

She was called the Black Widow by the Italian press, and the prosecution argued Patrizia desperately wanted control over the Gucci estate.

She also, it was said, wanted to prevent her ex-husband marrying his lover Paola Franchi, now 68.

Image:

The impending marriage would have cut Patrizias spousal maintenance in half to just over 600,000 a year a sum she once famously declared amounted to a bowl of lentils.

Patrizia even said in court: Its better to cry in a Rolls-Royce than be happy on a bicycle.

She was found guilty of arranging the murder and sentenced to 29 years in jail. It was cut to 18 years on appeal after it was argued she was suffering from a narcissistic personality disorder.

With credit for good behaviour, she was released in October 2016.

Image:

She could have left prison earlier if she had agreed to take part in a work release programme. She dismissed that notion, saying: Ive never worked in my life and I dont intend to start now.

The hitman debt-ridden pizzeria owner Benedetto Ceraulo was hired through an intermediary and got a whole life jail sentence.

On her release from prison, Patrizia was asked by a TV crew: Why did you hire a hitman to kill Maurizio Gucci? Why didnt you shoot him yourself?

She replied, deadpan: My eyesight is not so good I didnt want to miss.

Later, in a documentary about her life, she gave further insight into the motivation for her crime, saying: I was furious with Maurizio.

I went around asking everyone, even the local grocer, is there someone who has the courage to murder my husband?

Now living alone in Milan with her cat, she has since lamented: Few women can truly capture the heart of a man, even fewer manage to own it.

Patrizia is estranged from the two daughters she had with Maurizio Allesandra and Allegra.

Image:

She is no longer allowed to use the Gucci surname but says: I still feel like a Gucci in fact, the most Gucci of them all.

And she can still be seen wandering Milans fashion shops in dark glasses, dripping in gold jewellery, with a pet macaw on her shoulder.

The movie is based on Sara Gay Fordens 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour and Greed.

Adam Driver plays Maurizio and co-stars include Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino.

The film spans three decades of fashion, passion, betrayal, decadence and, ultimately, revenge.

Patrizia was born in 1948 to a humble family in a province of Modena. But as Maurizios father Rodolfo commented on meeting her, she was a social climber who has nothing in mind but money.

Maurizio and Patrizia married in 1972 and were together for 20 years. Their flashy, lavish lifestyle regularly made headlines.

Holidays were at their chalet in St Moritz, their huge 5th Avenue penthouse in Manhattans Olympic Tower or on board their 200ft-long wooden yacht, The Creole.

They also owned a villa in Acapulco, a farm in rural Connecticut, and various private islands dotted around the world.

The licence plates on their fleet of luxury cars read Mauizia the original blended couple name.

Patrizia threw extravagant colour-coded parties for their glittering circle.

The clothes, decor and food were all of a single hue orange being her favourite. She once spent 9,000 a month on orchids alone.

But in 1985 Patrizias incredible world came crashing down when Maurizio told her he was going on a short business trip to Florence.

The following day, he sent a friend to tell his wife he would not be returning. The marriage was over.

It was a move that was, ultimately, to cost him his life.

10 Reasons Why Fiji Should Be Your Next International Holiday – The Urban List

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Since our international borders shut in early 2020, Aussies and Kiwis have dreamed of their next overseas holiday. Well, its time to wake up and shake off that wanderlust because those post-lockdown fantasies are finally becoming a reality, and we cant wait any longer.

To help you, weve got just the recommendation on where you should fly first. In the South Pacific sits an archipelago of 333 picturesque islands that make up the dreamy and oh-so-holiday-worthy country of Fiji.

Just a cruisy four-hour flight from Sydney or a three-hour flight from Auckland, Fiji should be top of your first holiday list coming out of lockdowns (or any time, really). Especially in the upcoming warmer months, when the region shines as one of the best summer vacation spots in the world.

Whether you prefer to lie by the beach with a cocktail in hand, cruise around the endless tropical island scapes, immerse yourself in local culture, dine to your hearts content or unleash the inner-adrenaline junkie inside you. Fiji is the ideal first holiday spot to help you forget the last 18 months and take a well-deserved break.

To get you excited for some safe travelling and into planning your holiday itinerary, weve rounded up some of the very best holiday must-dos in the soft coral capital of the world. Here are 10 reasons why Fiji should be your first international holiday.

How you holiday is entirely up to you. But if youre coming to Fiji looking to recharge the batteries through a bit of relaxation and wellness, from personalised meal plans and herbal medicine to spa treatments and specialised workoutsweve got a couple of options for you as examples.

If a bit of morning stretching and exercise gets you out of bed, Vomo Island Resorts VomoFit programme offers guests complimentary yoga, aquafit and free weight classes to help you start the day right. Or if youre after pure relaxation, Malolo Islands Six Senses Resort have a dedicated wellness and spa programme letting you work with a wellness expert guiding you through detoxing, meditation and every kind of spa treatment your body might crave. All backgrounded by lush tropical jungle.

Luckily, travellers are becoming much more aware of their eco-footprint as they embark on journeys across the worldrealising that visiting another country should be more sustainably considered now than ever before. To help with that, look for Fiji resorts that implement sustainable practices, many of which adopt farm-to-table methods by growing vegetables and herbs on site and making the most of native ingredients naturally offered on their grounds.

There are more specific initiatives likeKomoko Private Islandscommunity-supported dock to dish seafood fishing programme that works with small-scale fishermen, marine biologists and sustainable seafood advocates. Or resorts like Castaway Island, Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina, and Shangri-La Fiji giving patrons the chance to plant coral or mangroves during their stay and off-set the carbon emissions of flying over.

If theres any reason to visit Fiji, its for Fijians famously welcoming nature and generous hospitality. With its borders finally opening up, the country is ready to welcome travelling Aussies and Kiwis again and help us share in the Bula spirit. The Fijian greeting is much more than a way to say hello; Bula wishes good life and good healthsomething we could all use and pass on right now.

From taking in local stories through traditional and contemporary dance performances to a Community Tourism initiative that helps you give back to Fijian communities by volunteering your time to building projectsthe country welcomes us with open arms.

We get it, travelling in this new world can be scary and can bring up some hesitancy until we become acclimated once more with the realities of not just leaving home, but the country. However, the Fijian Government along with Tourism Fiji have created the Care Fiji Commitment, a World Health Organisation-approved standard of best practice for tourism businesses, so you can feel confident that you can get on a plane and travel to Fiji in complete safety.

As of the start of November, over 86% of Fijis eligible population was fully vaccinated and is still rising. The Care Fiji Commitment ensures that every tourism business you encounter on your travels, who is part of the commitment, will be 100% vaccinated and will have a dedicated Wellness Ambassador ensuring the highest level of health and safety practices are rolled out across their business.

We mentioned how Fiji is made up of 333 islands, right? So, you would assume its the ideal holiday destination to hop on a cruise boat and spend your days tripping around, soaking it all in not just from the beach but from a water vantage point. If you like floating and relaxing, there are a few different ways to go about it.

You could take a day trip out to the two-level floating club Cloud9 on Ro Ro Reef for a few drinks, a swim and a night of dancing with live DJs. Or you could explore the seas with your own eyes and test your fears by taking a day cruise to snorkel with sharks. Or simply make a day of it and take inland excursions by boat to island destinations like Malamala Beach Club or Tivua Island.

Whats better while on holiday than cutting yourself a little slack and indulging in some of the best local cuisines, plus having a cocktail or five? From traditional eats to amazing resort fine-diningFiji has a way of not letting you leave without fulfilling your travellers appetite.

Firstly, most resorts will hold a meke and lovo night for guests, involving dancing and cooking using a traditional underground oven technique. You might also have the chance to partake in a welcoming kava ceremony, communally making the countrys national drink by crushing the root of the yaqona root.

If youre dreaming of a beachside rum daiquiri scene out of a movie, you can live it at Sofitels Suka Bar on Denarau. If you want to try one of Fijis most iconic dishes, order the Kokoda ceviche from chef Lance Seeto in Nadis Kanu Restaurant. Or even spend a day on an organic spice plantation, enjoying tropical farm-to-table menus from the vantage point of lush gardens, in prime view of the sea.

We mentioned earlier that how you choose to holiday is up to you. That might be getting a massage or relaxing on the beach for a couple of weeks. But if youre secretly hiding or overtly flaunting a thrill-seeking sideFiji has you sorted with plenty of adrenaline-inducing activities.

Regardless of previous experience, itd be a shame to travel through Fiji without grabbing a surfboard and trying to catch a few waves. If you want to ease in with a leisurely longboard break, head to Natadola beach on the Coral Coast. But if youre there for something a little more serious, the Mamanuca Islands and reef breaks like restaurants or cloudbreak will be right up your alley.

For more thrills, you can jetboat safari up the Sigatoka River, zipline the largest course in the South Pacific and abseil 100m into caves, or test nature with team white water rafting.

If staying home these past 18 months without spending has made you itchy for boujee holiday vibesthere are a few ways you can indulge in a more luxe style of travelling around Fiji and really make the most of that trip.

Top of the list has to be adults-only boutique Tokoriki Island Resort which was voted the #1 hotel in the South Pacific by TripAdvisor for 2021. Book in a beachfront villa and really treat yourself to the spa package that comes with a daily massage *dream*. You can also stay at luxury resorts like Royal Davui Island Resortthat offer a private picnic on a remote sand cay,orYasawa Island Resort & Spathat offer private beaches for the perfect romantic picnic. Or you can lean completely into boss living by staying the night on your own private island and sleeping under the stars.

Were all about its whats inside that counts, and so far, this list has proven that Fiji offers plenty. But lets just take a second to remember how visually stunning the country is and how much of your breath may be taken away with each new destination. Were talking pristine white sand beaches, out-of-this-world natural waterfalls, crystal clear waters for snorkelling, lush tropical rainforests, rugged coastline and dramatic mountain tops.

From trekking the Talanoa hinterland to exploring the mountain ridges and Tavoro Waterfalls of Bouma National Heritage Parkyou cant begin to fathom how much there is to discover and how gorgeous itll be along the way.

Fiji has certainly earned its nickname. Below the surface of the countrys magnificent seas is a colourful network of 4000 square miles of coral reefs, including the world-famous Great Astrolabe Reef surrounding Kadavu Island. Aussies know a thing or two about a great reef, but with over 1000 species of fish and several hundred types of coral and sponges, its more than worth putting on the goggles and taking a calm dive in the Fiji waters.

For some unique diving experiences, try diving the Great White Wall and snorkelling the Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait or having the once-in-a-lifetime experience of swimming with the manta rays in several different spots between May and October.

Theres nothing left to say except, Bula! We cant wait to kick into relaxation mode and hop on a plane. And luckily, that wait is over.

As soon as you can travel againpack your swimmers, leave your troubles behind, and get yourself over to Fiji for the holiday you deserve this summer.

Lacson plants PH flags in West PH Sea island: Symbol of commitment to defend PH sovereignty – Manila Bulletin

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Partido Reporma chairman and standard-bearer Panfilo Ping M. Lacson on Saturday, Nov. 20 made a scheduled visit to Pag-asa Island off the Spratlys archipelago Saturday (November 20) to personally consult with the local residents and fishermen in the area amid tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Lacson flew to the island from Manila via private plane early morning carrying new Philippine flags, which he planted on the island as a gesture of goodwill to a small community of Filipinos, trying to lead quiet lives in that part of Palawan.

The visit was kept under wraps because of security concerns.

Welcoming Lacson upon his arrival for a quick stopover at the Antonio Bautista Air Base in Puerto Princesa City were the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Command (WesCom) personnel stationed in the province.

He departed mainland Palawan around 8 AM onboard a private Pilatus aircraft going to Pag-asa Island with Partido Reporma president and former House Speaker Pantaleon Bebot Alvarez, and secretary-general and Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib.

Partido Reporma senatorial candidate and former Philippine National Police chief Guillermo Eleazar, spokesperson Ashley Ace Acedillo, as well as former Interior Secretary and National Unity Party chairman Ronaldo Puno also joined the trip. They arrived in the area at 9:10 AM.

Lacson led a flag raising ceremony with the Philippine national anthem played during a brief morning program that was held as soon as they landed on Pag-asa. Three PH flags were raised there by the senator to replace the old one in the municipality, according to Acedillo.

It was a very significant moment. Yung tipong mararamdaman mo yung patriotismo mo bilang Pilipino. (You could really feel that sense of patriotism as a Filipino), Acedillo said in a brief interview after their visit to Pag-asa Island.

This is a symbolic action to signify that we are firm in our commitment in defending our territory and our sovereignty and this is even against the backdrop of a looming Chinese presence, the Partido Reporma spokesman added.

Lacson, thereafter, engaged the fisherfolk and other concerned local residents in an informal dialogue to get their perspectives on the West Philippine Sea issue. The coastal village of Pag-asa is home to at least 193 civilian Filipinos based on the 2020 census..

Acedillo said Lacson was the first elected official ever to pay the Pag-asa Island residents a visit, and they were really happy to see the senator, who even brought them fresh fried Chicken Joys from Manila.

Isa sa mga nagustuhan ko doon na pagkakataon yung sinabi ni Sir Ping Lacson na maituturing pang tagapagtanggol ng ating soberanya, ng ating teritoryo ang mga nakatira na mga residente doon mismo sa Isla (What I really appreciated during that moment was when Sir Ping Lacson mentioned that the people on the island themselves can even be considered as defenders of our sovereignty, our territory), Acedillo said.

Tensions over the controversial waters flared anew following recent reports that Chinese Coast Guard vessels blocked and used water cannons to drive away local commercial ships on a resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.

While no one was injured in the incident, both Lacson and his running mate Senate President Vicente Tito Sotto III joined other government officials in strongly condemning the attack, saying that the Philippines should not be pushed over in its own territories.

Sarili na nga nating teritoryo, tayo pa yung tinataboy, wina-water cannon. Napakasamang pangitain yon (We are in our own territory, but were being pushed around, water cannoned. Thats a very bad omen), Lacson told reporters last Thursday.

Lacson went to Pag-asa Island, some 225 kilometers away from Ayungin Shoal, to receive updates from the AFP WesCom in his capacity as the incumbent chairman of the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification and Reconciliation.

The mission was also part of his ongoing commitment to take a deeper look at the West Philippine Sea situation from reliable sources so he could formulate better plans and strategies that would hopefully address recurring territorial disputes across the region.

Lacson is seeking the presidency in the 2022 national elections with Sotto as his vice president. They have earlier committed to protect the West Philippine Sea and our sovereignty by pursuing a balance of power among nations anchored on a pro-Filipino agenda.

Pag-asa is the second largest island in the disputed Spratlys archipelago under Philippine administration. It lies about 480 kilometers west of Puerto Princesa City and is within the jurisdiction of the municipality of Kalayaan, Palawan.

The Kalayaan Group of Islands was declared Philippine territory by virtue of Republic Act 9522, or An Act to Define the Baselines of the Territorial Sea of the Philippines of 2009, consistent with Article 121 of the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Discover why Anguilla is the Caribbeans capital of cuisine – Lonely Planet Travel News

Posted: at 9:22 pm

With 33 amazing beaches,Anguillais an island where one can really work up an appetite and thirst. For vacationers who gravitate toward the label of foodie, Anguilla is a proper slice of paradise.

The range of dining options found on this 16-mile-long Caribbean retreat is nearly endless. Youll find 5-star oceanfront dining, custom meals by private chefs, eclectic cafes, roadside BBQ stands, food vans, bakeries, and some of the best beach bars in the world. During a stay on Anguilla, you can sample international cuisine one night, authentic local fare another, and then round it all out with a romantic gourmet dinner on the beach. Lets see what makes the most northern of the Leeward Islands the Caribbeans undisputed capital of cuisine.

Locals and vacationers alike will tell you that French bakeryLe Bon Painis the best way to start your morning. From their Caf au Lait to their quiche and fresh croissants, this street-side caf, located in Anguillas Island Harbour area, is a cant-miss breakfast winner.

Sit at Le Bon long enough, and youll notice a slew of customers ordering their delicious whole-baguette sandwiches to bring back to their hotel for lunch. The occasional chicken or rooster flitting by and clucking a chorus of see you tomorrow adds to the ambiance.

Since 1999, breakfast-goers have flocked toTastysrestaurant in Anguillas South Hill district. The breakfast menu features American, Caribbean, and French fare. Many breakfast customers go for a taste of France with Tastys Grand Marnier French Toast, but if youre in a more savory, New York state of mind, you cant go wrong with Tastys Eggs Benedict.

Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotelis one of Anguillas longest-running hotel success stories. One reason for their legion of admirers is the breakfast buffet at onsite restaurant Cips by Cipriani. Your morning windfall begins with a parade of pastries, fresh juices, fruit, smoothies, and Johnny Cakes, a popular Anguillian baked good. And while at most breakfast buffets, the food is the star, the main event at Cap Juluca just might be the ocean views.

Anguilla has the most beautiful beaches in the world, and there are restaurants aplenty that take advantage of the islands stunning scenery.Straw Hat RestaurantonMeads Bay Beachis all about the view of the strikingly turquoise ocean. Since 1996, Straw Hat owners Peter and Anne Parles have been serving up great food, great drinks, and that incredible scenery. Depending on the time of year youre visiting Anguilla, your noontime gaze from your table toward the Caribbean Sea may include a mega-yacht stationed on the calm water, a dolphin frolicking in the distance, or a rainbow showing off after a brief Anguilla shower. As for your lunch choice, a wise selection would be a trio of blackened shrimp, mahi-mahi, and lobster tacos.

Sunshine Shackowner/bartender/chef Garvey Lake does business on an almost-too-beautiful-to-be-real stretch of white sand onRendezvous Bay Beach. The expanse of beach is enormous, the views of neighboring St. Maarten are amazing, and the atmosphere is all-around unforgettable. The beach is ideal for a walk if you want to get in some cardio before you eat. After your stroll, enjoy Sunshines Caribbean fare, including chicken, ribs, snapper, and lobster. If you want something completely different to quench your thirst, ask for the BBC, a Banana Baileys Colada.

For a truly unique setting, considerVeya Restaurantstreehouse-style surroundings and visuals. The fun begins as soon as you enter through their lush garden and walk under a wooden arbor.Veyas signature starter, a shrimp cigar, bursts with Moroccan spices, tomato chermoula, and apricot jam. Thanks to its incredible Caribbean flavors, the jerk tuna with poached pineapple, plantain chips, and red pepper is another favorite.

Some Anguilla vacationers choose to stay in the multitude of private houses, villas (such as Patsys Seaside Villaor Shoal Bay Villas), suites, or condos available on the island. A great way to make the most of these accommodations is to hirePrivate Chef Tyrone Hughesfor a day or even the week. Chef Hughes offers 10 menus to choose from, with each including at least three courses. His Anguilla Way menu begins with local pumpkin and ginger soup, followed by an entre of pan-seared blackened mahi-mahi or snapper with sweet potato mash and assorted vegetables flavored with tarragon, mango, and tomato salsa. Dessert features cinnamon and nutmeg pineapple, along with coconut ice cream.

If a craving for authentic island barbecue strikes you during your Anguilla trip, head over toB & Ds BBQin Long Bay Village. This second-generation, open-air restaurant serves up mouth-watering barbecue chicken, lamb, lobster, fish, and ribs. Some say the secret to their success is mastery of the coal kiln for cooking. Others might say that its their Johnny Cake and plantains. But most would probably agree that B & Ds welcoming atmosphere has a lot to do with it, too.

This is just a sampling of Anguillas top dining experiences. Whats truly amazing is that on an island thats tip-to-tip shorter than most work commutes, youll find a thriving culture of local cuisine alongside restaurants that draw on flavors from every corner of the globe, with new dining concepts opening frequently. Anguillas reputation as the Caribbean capital of cuisine is certainly well-deserved.

Pampered pets on private jets: from hand-holding otters to a fuselage of falcons – The National

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Weve all heard of Snakes on a Plane but what about parrots on a plane, falcons on a flight or hand-holding otters on a private jet?

The crew aboard VistaJets private planes have seen all of the above and more since the introduction of the airline's dedicated pet service.

Designed to allow travellers chartering jets to fly more easily with their furry companions, the global company's VistaPet service has grown in popularity since it was launched in 2019. The service has now been extended to include hostesses who are specially trained in pet first-aid, customised in-flight menus for animals and even help for nervous dogs to combat a fear of flying.

The company says the number of pets travelling on its planes has increased by 86 per cent over the past two years, with one in four clients now flying with an animal in tow. The service has grown even more popular amid the global pandemic, says Matteo Atti, executive vice president of marketing at VistaJet.

More and more people are travelling with their pets and what we hope to do is to make it the best flight ever.

Cindy Kowalewski, a cabin hostess and trainer at the private aviation company agrees. Weve absolutely seen an increase of pets on board, and more pets are flying, both within the US and internationally, which I think the pandemic has propelled, she says.

A dog-owner herself, Kowalewski has been through VistaJets pet safety training course and is now well versed in all segments of animal first-aid, is able to quickly identify pets' vital signs and can read a furry passengers body language.

Theyre part of the family and theyre actually my favourite kind of customer on board. Its really nice to have them and know them on a first-name basis, says Kowalewski.

For Atti, having hostesses who can tell whether an animal is tense before or during a flight is a key part of the VistaPet programme.

When we started having more animals on board, we wanted to be able to understand the body language of a pet to understand whether they were nervous, or they were feeling poorly.

This became even more important when the company acquired a Bombardier Global 7500, an aircraft capable of flying for more than 17 hours non-stop.

Weve had otters holding hands in their own little bathtub in the cabin and parrots eating potato mash at the table with their owners

Matteo Atti, VistaJet

We focused on begin able to cater for anything that could happen in those 17 hours. We had done it already for humans, so we thought we may as well complete it for anyone who is aboard. And the second category are the pets, says Atti.

Today, VistaJets crew are better able to assess whether an animal is feeling excited, nervous or starting to get aggressive and have the tools to help calm them and encourage them to relax during the flight. After all, pets are the passengers you can't speak to, says Atti.

But not all pets can be soothed with calming treats and a handmade sleep blanket, and some animals just like people can be very nervous passengers. Which is why VistaJet also offers clients the option to book their pets on a course designed to combat their fear of flying.

Dogs can be enrolled in VistaJet's Fear of Flying course to help desensitise them to flying. Photo: VistaJet

The idea for that came after speaking to a very famous entertainer in the US sadly I can't give you her name but she was flying with her dog all around the US quite easily. But after one flight to Europe, she said she'd had the flight from hell because her dog was very anxious and didn't stop crying for the whole journey, says Atti.

To be able to help dogs like this feel more at ease when travelling, especially those that are going to be flying long-haul, VistaJet launched its familiarisation-training programme.

VistaJet members can drop off their four-legged friends at one of several centres to take part in the Fear of Flying course, where the animals undergo a one or two-week course designed to alleviate much of the stress of flying.

The trainers do this by familiarising the animal to desensitise them to some of the most annoying elements of flying on a plane, which for animals, are usually the smell of gasoline which people dont really sense, but dogs do so easily, and the vibration of the aircraft. The third thing they hate is the sense of constant moving, that loss of balance.

Trainers first work to gain the dogs' trust then begin exercises like putting them on vibrating surfaces, exposing them to the smell of gasoline and holding them on a moving platform for a short period of time each day. Gradually, this teaches the dog that theres nothing to fear.

It's about generating a sense of serenity in a place that resembles the conditions that the pet would find in a plane, says Atti.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the service doesn't come cheap. It costs a few thousand dollars per animal, but if youre flying privately from New York to London a few times a year and spending upwards of $100,000 on each flight then a one-off fee of a few extra thousand is relatively marginal, and can lead to much more pleasant flights.

Pets that fly privately already have an easier time of it than animals that have to travel commercially.

Flying internationally with a pet on a commercial airline more often than not means turning up at the airport early and saying goodbye to Fido or Fluffy six hours or so before departure. The animals are then loaded in to cargo, where they remain inside their cage for the duration of the flight. The cargo hold isnt particularly warm, and it's not as pressurised as the cabin, making it a rather uncomfortable journey.

While dogs and cats are the most popular pets on VistaJet flights, the company has also flown parrots, otters, iguanas, falcons and other animals. Photo: VistaJet / George Baxter

And thats all before the plane touches down on the other side and pets need to be offloaded and sent to a vet centre, where they undergo observation and assessment for another few hours before being reunited with their owners.

When you're flying with a pet on a private jet, it's not like that. Weve had otters holding hands in their own little bathtub in the cabin. We had parrots eating potato mash at the table with their owners, says Atti.

We had a falcon flock on-board for one of our Arab customers. He was going to a show so he had all the falcons lined up in the cabin and we had another member who wanted to compete in a dog show in Asia, so he brought eight dogs on-board they were all running around the cabin.

When it comes to travelling internationally with animals, regulations vary widely and can be very complex with some countries demanding a lot more than others.

Flying within the US is quite simple because its a national flight, but as soon as you start to go through customs, it can become very complex, says Atti.

Flying with an animal can be complicated, due to varying regulations and restrictions around the world. Photo: VistaJet

The UAE is quite strict, there's a lot of vaccinations required and there are a lot of countries in Asia where there are specific recommendations depending on the dog type. Switzerland is also very restricted as theres a limited number of airports where we are allowed to fly into and South Africa still requires quarantine for pets on arrival. Most other countries now allow pets to quarantine before flying and have it authorised by a vet, which is much less stressful for the animals.

Passengers flying with VistaJet do not need to worry about tracking these regulations or making sure their pets paperwork is in order, as the company takes care of all that for its clients.

The regulations are very unpredictable, so we help our customers with all the documentation before they get on the plane. We have flown to over 3,000 airports in 187 countries and we have relationships with all of these airports, so we know the rules, says Atti.

However, thats not to say that things always go to plan when flying privately, as one VistaJet client found out a few months ago when they arrived in Paris to board their aircraft with an unannounced cat in tow.

We were not expecting any animals on-board, however the family arrived with their pet cat, says Laura Bird, a VistaJet cabin hostess who's been flying with the company for seven years and had a particularly memorable flight to the Caribbean earlier this year.

Minnie the cat became VistaJet crew for a day after flying undocumented to Turks and Caicos. Photo: VistaJet

Knowing that the islands can be very strict on animal immigration, the captain asked if the necessary paperwork had been taken care of and was assured it had been. Unfortunately, when we landed in Turks and Caicos, the authorities were not satisfied as the documents should have been submitted two weeks prior to arrival.

Bird and the other two members of her crew contacted the vet from the local town to find out what options they had. The vet gave them three choices: the first was that the cat could leave on a commercial cargo aircraft, but because of Covid-19 restrictions in place at the time there were no flights available.

Option two was for the cat to spend 48 hours in quarantine at the airport and then leave with its family on a charter flight, but with the guests having just flown more than 10 hours to start a three-week family holiday this wasn't ideal. Option three was that the cat could be put down.

Of course, none of these options were appealing. We were departing to Nassau to spend the night there and then travelling to Europe the next day, so we offered to take the cat to the Bahamas and then back to Madrid, where she could be collected by a friend living in Spain, says Bird.

After the captain successfully cleared the animal for landing in Nassau, the jet set off for the island, this time flying with a crew of four the two pilots, the cabin hostess and the stowaway cat. Some 48 hours later, the family's beloved pet was back home in Paris.

The client was happy, and the crew were happy, but the cat was especially happy that no one had to consider option three, says Atti.
