Author and former professional poker player Annie Duke on how conspiracy theories gain ground – TechCrunch

Posted: August 26, 2020 at 4:14 pm

Earlier today, Facebook said it had removed hundreds of QAnon groups from its site, and that its restricting many more groups, along with hundreds of pages and more than 10,000 Instagram accounts.

As The New York Times observed in its report about the maneuvers, four-year-old QAnon, once a fringe phenomenon, has gone mainstream in recent months despite a wide range of patently outlandish conspiracy theories, including that the world is run by pedophiles trying to damage Donald Trump and that 5G cellular networks are spreading the coronavirus.

How is this happening exactly? Because we happened to be talking this week with the famed former professional poker player turned best-selling author Annie Duke an academic who now teaches about decision theory, including in her upcoming book How to Decide: Simple Tools for Making Better Choices we asked for her thoughts about whether and why more people than ever have grown susceptible to conspiracy theories.

She had some interesting things to say that we thought worth sharing. Stay tuned for a longer piece from our conversation about her new book and how it can help both founders and investors.

Our brains dont like randomness. We as human beings are always trying to figure out this cause and effect thats just kind of random, yet our brains dont like; we try to connect dots and create causality where it doesnt exist.

Belief in conspiracy theories isnt correlated to intelligence. Its kind of a different thing thats going on with how comfortable are you with saying, Shit happens. Sometimes life is random and theres a lot of luck involved and what are you going to do? versus [people who] really want things to make sense and to [maintain] the illusion of control over outcomes.

If you say, These random things can happen like COVID and people are dying and youre now stuck in your home, its hard to think about that as luck expelling itself all over you because that has implications [regarding how much control] you have over your destiny. Were very deterministic in how we think . . . so were always connecting things together to make it feel like decisions and outcomes and things are much more deterministic than they are.

Were also natural pattern recognizers, even where patterns dont exist. Its so we can partly figure out that, When I went to this part of the plains, there were a lot of lions, [so for safetys sake I shouldnt go back], and so we can recognize faces. Its [hard] to understand that the world is not as you see it and that we impose things on the world all the time. [Editors note: here, Duke points to this visual illusion (below) of two side-by-side cubes that look to be in motion but are not.]

We shouldnt have so much confidence that we know the truth, but we really believe that the cubes are spinning. So [one solution is] dont have so much confidence that we know the truth, and know that youre imposing your reality on the world, as opposed to reality imposing itself on you.

Conspiracy theories are not new, in any case, theyve been going on a long time. The bigger issue now is how easily they are amplified.

One of the heuristics we have to determine whether something is true or not is processing fluency, meaning how easy is it for us to process a message. If we hear something over and over again, it increases its truthiness, in the words of Stephen Colbert. If you add a picture so I say giraffes are the only animal that cant jump, and I include a picture of a giraffe that increases this truthiness.

You can see where that interacts with social media. With theories plus repetition, its harder to figure out fact from fiction.

Again, well have more with Duke soon, including why youre almost certainly running your meetings the wrong way, and why we dig into losses without exploring enough why things go the right way when they do.

Casino Games: Online Poker | What Happened To Full Tilt Poker? – GamingTodaySlotsToday

Posted: at 4:14 pm

In Part I, we discussed the origin of Black Friday and how Pokers Black Friday had come about in 2011, including the role of Ray Bitar who had conceived the Full Tilt Poker online web site and included Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer and Rafe Furst as co-founders. Now, lets discuss what happened after it became highly successful.

Understandably, because of his impoverished early life, Bitar had a strong desire for greater wealth which led him to criminal action, stealing funds from the Full Tilt Poker players accounts over $390 million in total.

In 2006, the U.S. had introduced the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), making it illegal for online poker sites to serve U.S. players.

One of Full Tilt Pokers competitors, PartyPoker, withdrew from the U.S. market, leaving players searching for a new site. Despite this new law, Bitar decided that Full Tilt Poker would continue to accept U.S. customers. As a result, the site nearly doubled in size.

Lederer, a resident of Las Vegas, had been highly regarded in the poker world, having won two World Poker Tour titles, 44 cashes in World Series of Poker tournaments and two gold bracelets The Professor, as he was known to many poker players, had built an estimated net worth of $60 million. As one of the founders, Lederer served as president of Tiltware LLC, the company that established Full Tilt Poker in 2004. He served on the companys board of directors along with co-founders Bitar, Furst and Ferguson.

They were accused by the Department of Justice of taking $440 million in player funds between 2007-2011. Lederer had received $42 million from Full Tilt Poker. He settled with the DOJ, while admitting no wrong-doing, forfeiting assets of $2.5 million in exchange for little more than a slap on the wrist. Several years later, he made a half-hearted apology, shifting the blame onto those who ran the company after he stepped down. The poker world was not happy with his performance, nor his apology.

World-famed poker pro, book author and entrepreneur, Ferguson of Los Angeles was paid $85 million for his work at Full Tilt Poker. In his settlement, he agreed to forgive $140 million in dividends due him with the understanding that the money would go to the return of funds received from the players.

During his poker career, Ferguson won six WSOP events including the 2000 WSOP Main Event, earning approximately $6 million. He won another $3 million in other poker tournaments.

Furst of Marina del Rey, California, winner of $346,000 in major poker tournaments, mostly from the WSOP, agreed to forfeit the funds in his account that held his payments from Full Tilt Poker. Furst also paid $150,000 in fines, claiming that he was not aware that the company was not able to satisfy its liabilities to the players.

Perhaps there was a warning back in 2006, several years before the Poker Black Friday struck on April 15, 2011. One of Full Tilt Pokers board members quit, stating that Bitar and the other managers were making poor financial decisions.

Then, in 2008, there was further warning when a number of Full Tilt Poker players began having trouble withdrawing their funds. Things were not looking good for Full Tilt Poker. Apparently, those warnings were never heeded.

As for Ray Bitar, many people in the poker world believe Bitar deserved greater punishment and will never forgive him, of which he is well aware. As a result, Bitar is no longer involved in poker. He would like to put the past behind him and return to the day-trading business, if possible.

Who Are the All-Time Leaders in Poker in North America? – Poker News Daily

Posted: at 4:14 pm

For the past six months, the poker world has basically shut itself down (THANKS, COVID-19). Because of that inactivity, there has been little to no movement on the respective charts for all-time money winnings in poker. So, who are the leaders in the individual countries? We stopped to examine that issue (thanks to the stoppage in play), with the North American continent the first one to step up to the plate.

Bryn Kenney Holds U. S. Lead

To say that Bryn Kenney has played pretty much every High Roller event over the past five years would be a serious understatement. What isnt an understatement is that hes been able to do very well in that format. A simple look at the standings (courtesy of The Hendon Mob database) show that he should hold the top slot for U. S. players for the foreseeable future.

Kenney has racked up $56,403,506 in his 13-year poker career, which also puts him atop the all-time standings also. Even the second-place person on the U. S. list, Justin Bonomo, is more than $7 million behind him and third place Erik Seidel almost $20 MILLION behind him. The Top Ten for the U. S. lines up as such:

1. Bryn Kenney, $56,403,5062. Justin Bonomo, $49,128,1073. Erik Seidel, $37,748,1264. Dan Smith, $36,742,7185. David Peters, $33,737,5416. Jason Koon, $31,101,7297. Steve ODwyer, $30,471,4758. Phil Ivey, $30,311,7599. Dan Colman, $28,925,05910. Cary Katz, $28,470,501

Daniel Negreanu Dominates Canada

Even though he now claims dual citizenship in the U. S., Daniel Negreanu is a born Canadian, so it is only natural that he be graded alongside his countrymen. It will also show that he has a dominant lead over his fellow Canucks and probably wont be caught for some time. His closest competitor, Timothy Adams, is almost $18 million behind Negreanu and those two (along with Sam Greenwood) have separated themselves from the pack.

What is interesting with the Canadian list is the number of players who were graduates of the Internet Age in the Aughts. Mike Timex McDonald, Sorel Imperium Mizzi and Mike Sir Watts Watson all came out of that era and made some serious coin in the live arena. Heres the rundown of the Top Ten all-time money winners from the nation of Canada:

1. Daniel Negreanu, $42,053,3072. Timothy Adams, $24,330,8033. Sam Greenwood, $22,307,6044. Jonathan Duhamel, $18,012,1105. Daniel Dvoress, $15,607,6256. Mike McDonald, $13,314,1907. Sorel Mizzi, $12,700,5398. Mike Watson, $12,117,3319. Peter Jetten, $9,328,63910. Mike Leah, $7,962,978

Mexico is Most Competitive All-Time List

The country of Mexico has arguably the most competitive Top Ten list for all-time earnings of the three countries in North America. While its leader, Juan Carlos Alvarado, is over the $4 million mark in earnings, the tenth place slot held by Christian De Leon is only at $320,070, surprisingly. Thus, if there is a youthful Mexican player male or female they can rocket up the Mexico leaderboard rather easily!

Heres the Top Ten all-time money winners from the country of Mexico:

1. Juan Carlos Alvarado, $4,476,3012. Luis Velador, $2,194,9803. Angel Guillen, $2,010,0924. Santiago Nadal, $1,057,7625. David Cossio, $826,0676. Jose Manuel Nadal, $746,3707. Fernando Fraire Galvan, $495,5708. Victoriano Perches, $382,1069. Pedro Fernandez, $334,56710. Christian De Leon, $320,070

Well continue with this series next week, moving on to Central and South America before heading to what should be an interesting battleground for poker Europe. If nothing else, it will give some grist for the discussion mills while the COVID outbreak continues onward.

Key Elements to Consider When Searching for the Best Poker Game Software Development Company – Communal News

Posted: at 4:14 pm

Poker has been famous even before emoticons and Lady Gaga stole its thunder. It has been one of the most prominent and favorite casino games ever to be played. Just like many other games like blackjack, poker is also a card game played in slots. Although occasionally, poker is played for entertainment purposes and to reduce tension and boredom, in most cases, poker is a gambling game played with the sole intent of winning money and cash prices.

Although that is a factor of luck involved, winning in poker also depends on the skills of observation, attention, and the cleverness with which the gamer understands the play.

Just like most other games, poker has also begun its online avatar. There are a lot of poker player applications that give you an almost similar feel of being in a casino. They are available either as web applications or mobile applications. Similar to the actual poker, you can also win cash prizes on this appbased poker games.

It is also an interesting business option because just like casinos, even the poker game business always makes money going with the philosophy that the house always wins. This has led to a lot of business enthusiasts stepping into the realm of poker game apps.

There are a lot of companies that offer poker game development services. The flipside of variety and numbers is the increased possibility of choosing an imperfect poker game software development company for your business endeavors. To reduce the chances of you ending up with the wrong company, we have compiled below, a list of factors to consider before you choose a partner for your poker game development.

Experience and expertise

There might be a lot of deeper statistics and information available but the most obvious and the easiest one for you to judge a company is through their experience in the field of poker game development. Companies that have vast experience are quite likely to understand the requirements of the client with a greater degree of accuracy. They also work in and extremely professional manner, being receptive to client feedback and reviews. Although it might be a simple thing to look at, the experience and expertise of a company goes a long way in establishing the supremacy of a company in the process of poker game software development.

The legality and licensing

Not every state is Nevada and not every city is Las Vegas! There are a lot of strict regulations that govern gambling as a business. One of them is that the software should be licensed. The last thing that you would want to encounter is the hassle of battling legal proceedings against your business. It is true that using licensed software is going to considerably increase the cost of development. However, it is also to be remember that it is a one time investment and it goes along way in ensuring safety and credibility of your poker app business.

If your poker game development company insists on purchasing licensing software, it is a great sign that they are genuine. They value credibility and transparency over cost.

Availability of support

Even for established operating systems like Windows and OS X, there is a constant need for support. Its only implies that a fresh new piece of software would demand a higher magnitude of support, especially during the nascent times of operation.

Your poker game software development partner should be able to provide you with 24/7 technical support. It is important to have a developer in hand who understands the intricate technical aspects of the app. Therefore, one of the factors that you will need to look for is the availability of support from the development partner across multiple platforms including but not limited to phone, email, and chat.

Extent of customization

At the cracks of your app like some thing that has been established over ages and has been in existence for more than decades. However, the cloak that it will where is very much your own. Sometimes, there is a need for customizing your poker game app.

The customization, in most cases, is confined to the user interface. The user interface, depending on your audience, should be impeccable, intuitive, and interactive. Even the colors used for your poker app should fall in line with the emotional aspects of your target audience. In addition, if you are building a web based application, the responsiveness on mobile devices also needs to be one of the factors that deserves attention.

In some rare instances, the customization that is required might die of deep into the intricate technical aspects. It could include but is not limited to amending your app in accordance with the legal requirements of your area. Your poker game software development partner should be able to provide these customization services and should be relentless in ensuring that all the needs of the client are met in terms of customization.

Scalability

What is that for a few hundred users might grow up to be more than 1 million users strong. When your marketing is that intense, your technology should also be proportionally strong and flexible. Your turnkey poker solution should be able to allow multiplier usage and should be extremely scalable in terms of performance and user base.

Choices for payment

In any poker game, money is involved. In casinos, it used to be cash payments. In the realm of technology, digital payments should be made possible. People use different payment instruments, and your poker game should be able to accommodate all of those. The payment methods include but is not limited to credit cards, debit cards, Internet banking, and wallets. In the long run, it is also recommended that your poker game accommodates cryptocurrency.

In all of this, security should not be compromised. While the game developer might not be able to provide all the essential components needed for payments, they can tie up with a payment services provider that will solve this challenge. A secure protocol for your payments goes along way in customer retention.

Social media integration

It might seem like a trivial feature but it helps a lot in profiling users. On one end, your app should connect with existing social media like Facebook and Twitter. Alternatively, you can also consider creating a mini social network within your app where users can connect with other users, create profiles, detail on hobbies and a lot of other aspects like likes and dislikes.

Adding a social dimension to your poker app insurance that people use your app not only for playing but also for connecting with other users, increasing the intensity and frequency of usage.

Conclusion

Poker game app development is surely a lucrative business idea and given the fact that poker is going global, now is the right time for you to start the business. You can either consider approaching established poker app development companies or even consider white label solutions that will help you launch your poker game software faster and more efficiently.

VIEW: Poker has a lot to offer to the Robinhood generation – CNBCTV18

Posted: at 4:14 pm

Mark Twain once said that there are two times in a mans life when he should not speculate: when he cant afford it and when he can. This advice may not resonate at all with the new generation of retail traders, being dubbed as Robinhood traders who did not shy away from putting their money to work in late February and early March, when markets were in a capitulation phase. I personally witnessed many friends who had no prior exposure to Indian equities deploy their savings to work over the last six months.

This has been a positive trend. Unlike previous market rallies which followed a crisis-induced sell-off where it was mainly institutional money which benefitted from rising asset prices, this time around the retail market participant has shown immense conviction in equities and has built wealth.

This lockdown has also benefited gaming in a big way, and we have seen a huge increase in traffic in online skill games such as poker with nearly 300 percent increase in online traffic during the first 3 months of the lockdown.

As someone who has played the sport at the highest level competitively, I see a lot of similarities between financial markets and poker. Some of the most decorated money managers in the world such as David Einhorn and Marc Lasry are regularly seen competing against the top pros. Further, there are numerous examples of poker professionals landing jobs at leading investment management firms.

When it comes to developing a consistent system or a framework, risk management, working on our psychology when thinking about risk-reward, bet sizing as well as always being open to adding to ones knowledge toolkit, traders can benefit immensely by using some concepts from poker.

1) System/framework: In the markets, a trader can be using either charting, momentum oscillators, fundamental analysis and economic indicators to set up trades and look for suitable entry and exit points. There are many systems that work and there is no one single correct framework. The trick to find that system which most suits your personality and trading style. In poker, we have all kinds of players at the very top. There are old school strategies such as using tells and tendencies, quant driven players using GTO (Game Theory Optimal Strategies) and then there are exploitative strategies. The game is always evolving and dynamic in nature, just like the markets. So, one must keep adjusting his/her system.

2) Risk management: One can learn a great deal about bankroll management and bet sizing from poker. The goal is to play with only those many chips in a day so that even if one loses, there is always a tomorrow. We have heard countless stories of market participants losing a chunk of their capital on a few bad trades. Playing poker teaches you about game selection, the stakes to choose and when to size up when the odds favor you.

3) Learning: Analysing your hand history is crucial for future success. Good poker players are always looking to improve their gameplay. Poker is not about winning or losing, but about making the right decision. Some of the top professionals spend many hours a week breaking down their hands and discussing it with peers and coaches. Traders should deploy a similar approach. It is not just about the P&L but also the tactical approach used to generate profits and avoiding substantial losses.

4) Psychology/ mental toughness: As they say in the markets, fools and liars call tops and bottoms. There is no trader who has not lost money or been on a consistent losing streak for a short while. Similarly, I dont know of any top professional poker player who hasnt been dealt with back to back blows/downswings. This may be a result of bad judgement or plain bad luck. But at the end of the day, the losses are real, and it takes courage and motivation to bounce back. There is a reason why a lot of avid poker players at American universities find their way to hedge funds and proprietary trading houses. The game can teach you how to stick to your core system and principles when faced with drawdowns.

This is where the statistical term variance comes in to play. In poker, one may have big losses and bad beats in a short duration while still sticking to an optimal strategy. However, in the long run, you can expect the variance to smoothen out to give you consistent returns, based on your level of skill. It is about sticking to a sound system or strategy irrespective of the swings and trusting the process.

There are many professional Poker players who dabble in the markets and vice versa. Both fields hold many similarities to a mind conditioned to understand an environment involving calculated risks. Intellectually challenging and thrilling, these two professional pursuits are where all the edges are to be gained!
