"One Of A Million" by Softcult – Northern Transmissions

Posted: September 29, 2022 at 1:14 am

Softcult is a Canadian duo made up of twin siblings Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn. They also used to be in a band called Courage My Love, signed to a major label and did that whole Warped scene dance in the 2010s. Their new sound, combines their love of grunge, shoegaze, dream-pop, and punk.

With Phoenix running point on production, engineering, and artwork, Mercedes directing/editing their videos, and both writing astoundingly-intimate lyrics about self-empowerment amidst social, political, and environmental collapse, the duo is about as DIY as it gets. They even create and produce their own zine called SCripture, currently on Vol. 20, and are active participants in their Softcult Discord server, a safe online community for their fans.

Mercedes Arn-Horn on One Of A Million:

Originally, I was writing from a frustrating perspective, expressing my feelings about the people in our society who think they are the exception and can justify repeating selfish actions, no matter who they harm in the process. As the song began to take shape, it also became about my own personal insecurities and fear of being ordinary and unexceptional, but the more I thought about it and wrote about it, I realized that accepting how similar we all are as human beings is a comforting sentiment, if not a vital one. The more we relate to each other and acknowledge our similarities, the more empathy and compassion we will have for one another. The more divided we are, the longer these issues get drawn out instead of solved. Its important to not only celebrate our diversity and unique-ness, but also to remember that at a very basic level we are all more the same than different.

6 Teens Who Make The World A Better Place – Forbes

Posted: at 1:14 am

Who says teens are self-absorbed? These six activists, all under 20 years old, already are making a tremendous positive impact on the world. Keep an eye on them as they continue to inspire and lead.

Mychal-Bella Bowman is an actress, model and philanthropist.

Actually, Mychal-Bella Bowman is not quite even a teenager. Yet already the 12-year-old has earned acclaim for her role as Grace in the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning limited series The Underground Railroad, which was based on the novel by Colson Whitehead. The actress started modeling at age two and quickly became the face for major brand billboards including Nike, Gap, American Girl, and Barbie/Mattel. She has since appeared in numerous commercials for McDonalds, Hertz, Disney, Target, and others. Currently, she appears in several shows and movies. But all this success has not dimmed her dedication to her life purpose, which is giving back.

Bowmans passion for philanthropy began at age 4, when she donated two big tubs of gently used toys to other kids. These days, she collaborates with nonprofit organizations to further their missions, from anti-bullying and mental health awareness to education and homelessness. Recently, she was honored as the National Black Arts Festival Celebrity Youth Chair for the third time and as a humanitarian with a performance at the ESPN ESPYS 50th Anniversary of the passing of Title IX ceremony.

I feel as if I discovered my life purpose in acting. To be able to bring a character like Grace to life at age nine was magical! Bowman says. But my purpose is also to give hope to the hopeless. I want to be a world changer as an actress and philanthropist. If a little girl from North Carolina can convince her mother to close her business of 25 years and move to LA to pursue her dreams, so can you. Do what you love and love what you do. That is key.

Armita Hosseini wrote a book and teaches courses on financial literary for youth.

Armita Hosseini, a frosh at Stanford University originally from Toronto, is an advocate for financial and economic education for youth, as well as an entrepreneur, writer, and public speaker. In 2020, at age 16, she published her first book, Roadmap to Financial Literacy: An Introduction to Personal Finance For Teenagers. She partnered with the nonprofit operationEconomics International to donate 300 copies of the book to underserved schools in San Marcos, California.

As the founder of EmpowerEcon, Hosseini has hosted three virtual three-day financial literacy camps and one entrepreneurship camp for over 300 teens from 36 countries across 5 continents. In late 2021, they published a book titled Economics From a Youths Perspective, and are working to make it available to schools across North America. Hosseini regularly speaks at workshops and on podcasts about topics such as financial literacy, leadership, and youth entrepreneurship.

Many of societys economic disparities can be addressed through increasing access to financial education, Hosseini says. At the same time, through my work, I want to inspire other youth to use their passions to make a difference in their communities. She advises aspiring entrepreneurs to take the first step, stay focused on your mission, view setbacks as inevitable, and cherish the process.

Meera Ramakrishnan is the cofounder of Avaagat.

Meeraa Ramakrishnan, 17, is a high school student in India. In 2019, she founded the nonprofit Avaagat to help children and families who cannot afford access to clean water and hygiene solutions. For its positive impact on the UN sustainable development goals, the organization was recognized with The Diana Award at the United Nations 1M1B (One Million for One Billion) Activate Impact summit.

In three years, Avaagat has raised in excess of $11,000 to conduct educational programs for students, install water filters for over 2,100 people, provide Covid safety kits to 1,500 people, and expand their program into six other countries across the globe. Ramakrishnan, who already has published research articles in scientific journals, plans to pursue studies in biological sciences and business at university.

Working with Avaagat and other passionate teens has helped me grow from a student to a learner, says Ramakrishnan. My ultimate goal in life is to create and encourage positive social change that is tangible and sustainable, and Avaagat gives me a platform to do just that. I hope other young changemakers collaborate and work together to make a lasting impact because community is all you need to make a small difference.

Rania Zuri is the founder of The LiTEAraray Society.

Rania Zuri is a high school junior in West Virginia who founded The LiTEArary Society, an entirely youth-led charitable book club with the mission of promoting the love of books among emergent readers from disadvantaged families. In March 2022, Zuri helped her organization donate 7,000 brand new books to children across her state. She travelled to every county to personally deliver the books, meeting Head Start directors and children at each one.

This past spring, Zuri wrote an op-ed for Teen Vogue on her experience and gave a TEDx talk on how to end the book desert one book at a time, which has garnered over 20,000 views. Her work was featured on Good Morning America, NBC Today, NBC Nightly News and Fox News. The press enabled her to continue her work over the summer of 2022. Zuri donated more than 2,000 new books to migrant children in Head Start programs across several southern states, in rural India, and to an orphanage in Jerusalem.

In April 2022, Zuri met with U.S. Senator Shelley Capito in Washington, D.C. to discuss her impact on early childhood literacy. This led to Zuri coauthoring a Senate resolution for a special national day called the National One Book at a Time Day. The purpose of this day is to bring attention and awareness to the prevalence of book deserts, their effects on disadvantaged preschoolers, and how we collectively can help end this issue by donating just one book to a young child in need.

We are looking to make this a national youth movement and bring more awareness to the vast book deserts that exist, says Zuri. Most of the Head Start children in rural West Virginia that I met do not even have one book at home.

Vivian Nguyen is the founder of Dyenosaur Apparel and The Formula Project.

At age 14, Vivian Nguyen started a tie-dye clothing company called Dyenosaur Apparel to celebrate youth creativity, garner funding for community endeavors, and promote female entrepreneurship. The business was chosen to manufacture shirts for the National Agenda For Youth Initiative, with 50% of proceeds donated to the charity. Recently, Nguyen was recognized as a National Rileys Way Foundation Call For Kindness Fellow and awarded a multi-thousand dollar grant to spread kindness and make change in her community.

But that achievement wasnt enough for Nguyen. She also started The Formula Project, a mentorship program for low-income, minority 8th grade through high school girls designed to help them develop interpersonal and career skills. The transition from high school to the real world can be challenging due to a multitude of issues as girls struggle with mental health, the constant need to be accepted by their peers, and the growing pressures of society in male-dominated STEM fields, says Nguyen. The Formula Project cultivates a diverse and friendly environment for middle school students to grow alongside their high school and college mentors.

Thanks to her work with both organizations, Nguyen had the opportunity to be the youngest panelist at GenZ Girl Con, an international conference promoting women's empowerment, and also has appeared on television. My mission is to uplift minority female youth, she says. As a first-generation Vietnamese-American woman, I have witnessed a stark disparity in the representation of female people of color in the authority figures around me. Thus, I stepped up to fill that void. I speak for the silenced. I speak for the underprivileged.

To aspiring activists and founders, Nguyen says, Dont underestimate yourself. You are bound to come across many challenges. Do not back down when you are trivialized purely because of your age, race, gender, or socioeconomic status. As a member of Gen Z, you hold the capabilities to pioneer tomorrows destiny. Unleash the strength of your inner changemaker! Trust me, you are a force to be reckoned with!

Frane Marusic is the founder of Go-Getters.

Frane Marusic is a high school student from Croatia who recently finished a year abroad in the U.S. on an ASSIST Scholarship. His nonprofit Go-Getters recruits ambassadors, young people who assist teen entrepreneurs within their communities to become leaders and achieve success. So far, the organization has impacted 26 teenagers in 14 different countries, helping them to crowdfund an educational program in India, build a bracelet business in Sweden, and so on.

I have always had the entrepreneurial spirit within me, says Marusic. At 10, I would dive for seashells off the coast of Croatia and then sell them in front of my house. Last summer I started developing an app to track bus movements in my community since they often are late. My project is currently one of the top 10 finalists for the Social Impact Awards in Croatia.

While studying at an elite private US high school on a full ASSIST scholarship last year, Marusic saw the many opportunities available to students there, especially in the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation. He wanted to bring these opportunities to his community and other parts of the world, and so he created Go-Getters.

To aspiring changemakers, Marusic says, You have a unique purpose in this life. Believe in your abilities and embrace the worthiness of all you have to offer. Advocate for yourself your voice matters. In todays world, we have so much power to make a change not only in our communities, but beyond.

Sponsorship will be provided by exclusive nightlife venue Tape London.

Back-to-the-office moves leave tech uneasy – Axios

Posted: September 7, 2022 at 5:42 pm

A lot of CEOs are itching to get workers back to the office, but tech CEOs who want that face an extra uphill battle: After all, theirs is the industry that made remote work possible.

Why it matters: The tech industry was built on "dogfooding" the idea that companies should use the products they push on the public and every effort by a tech leader to hound reluctant employees back to the office park seems to betray that ideal.

Driving the news: This week Apple, tech's most valuable company, began requiring its workers to report to the office at least three days a week.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has walked a careful line between acknowledging the appeal of remote work but praising in-person "serendipity" and "collaboration" and making clear that he and Apple would really like to see more of the troops at the company's $5 billion, beached-flying-saucer headquarters.

The big picture: Apple's stance is unusually uncompromising among tech's giants.

Between the lines: In tech, every fight boils down to numbers. But arguments over the relative levels of productivity workers can achieve remotely vs. in-office are tough to resolve with data.

Inevitably, managers who favor in-office work rely less on statistics and more on invocation of culture and creativity.

Also: COVID is still very much with us, frequently sending "back to the office" workers right home again.

Of note: Apple TV+ had a streaming hit this year with "Severance," which depicts a world of office workers profoundly alienated from themselves via a neural technology that ropes off their work experiences and memories from the rest of their lives.

Our thought bubble: Apple led the personal-computer revolution with an appealing pitch to personal empowerment. The company's reluctance to fully embrace remote work is not only likely to demoralize some of its employees it feels surprisingly off-brand.

5 Organisations We’ve Teamed Up With to Empower Africa’s Young People – Global Citizen

Posted: at 5:42 pm

The number of young people in Africa is rising quickly. Africa was home to 226 million people aged 15-24 in 2015 almost a fifth of the youth population worldwide. According to projections, there will be 42% more young people in Africa by 2030.

Already, Africa is home to the worlds largest youth population with 70% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa being under the age of 30.

In Ghana, meanwhile, young people make up just over 35% of the population meaning theres huge potential for young people in Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa to empower their communities and bring about transformational change. But first, they must be empowered themselves.

So far, however, this empowerment is yet to happen in Ghana (although the government did launch its YouStart programme in March this year aiming to tackle the issue), and it shows in the nations rates of youth unemployment. Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of 12% and an underemployment rate of over 50%, according to the World Bank this month higher than overall unemployment rates across other sub-Saharan African countries, and compared to an average national unemployment rate of about 6%.

Ghana's youth employment challenge is vast and requires an all-round, deliberate, and consistent response, said Pierre Frank Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

The very good news, however, is that there are activists, advocates, and organisations already out there working to empower young people and set them up for the futures they need and deserve. As part of our Global Citizen Festival campaign, and in the run up to Global Citizen Festival: Accra on Sept. 24 find out more about the festival and how you can get free tickets here were working closely with five organizations in Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa that are empowering young people and changing lives.

Lets dive in to see who these organizations are and what they do.

The Ghana Education Collaborative provides support to exceptional students who are living in poverty in Ghana. As well as academic scholarships, the nonprofit also provides mentorship opportunities, access to a strong peer community, and guidance for students all year round, focusing on leadership development so they can impact their communities too. The organization envisions a time when education is accessible to all Ghanaian students.

Africa Matters Initiative is a youth-led organization that believes Africas large youth population is an opportunity for the continued development and growth of the continent.

To this end, they upskill and empower young Africans through capacity building and community impact projects. The objective is to see all African youth become change-makers who empower those around them.

LEAP Africa is a youth-focused leadership development nonprofit on a mission to inspire, empower, and equip a new generation of leaders with the skills and tools for personal and community transformation.

It provides capacity building for young people in leadership, education, employability, entrepreneurship, and civic participation to enable citizens to demand good governance and creatively address social issues.

Joy Olivier and Makhosi Gogwana founded Ikamva Youth in 2003, working to provide a safe space where students have access to after-school care, including homework support and other services. Having grown from humble beginnings, they now have more than 15 branches across South Africa and support over 5,000 learners yearly.

Junior Achievement Africa empowers and enables youth to thrive in a global economy. To allow young people to own their economic success, they strongly emphasise entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness.

What is Witchcore? The Aesthetic Gaining Popularity on Social Media, Explained – The Mary Sue

If you ever feel lacking in personal inspiration, you need to only look on the internet. On social media, there has been a huge wave of aesthetic trends. The various aesthetics group together an appearance or vibe that people can use as guidelines for fashion or home decor. Some people go a bit more extreme with their adherence to their core aesthetic and forget that there can still be problematic aspects to it.

In 2020, Cottagecore (a celebration of cottage life/simple country living, lots of floral prints, and pastels) made it to the mainstream news. A more recent trend focuses on the neon pink vibe with Barbiecore. Another one on the rise celebrates all things Stevie Nickswait, no, I mean all things witchy (but Stevie is close enough). Lets dive into the moody and beautiful world of Witchcore.

During times of worldly troubles, humans turn towards witchcraft. Overall, it gives us a sense of control and a way to understand the seemingly random (and usually negative) events in the universe. Using potions, herbs, and rituals calms us. So, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Witchcore (and people identifying as witches) grew into an internet subculture. Who doesnt want a magic potion (salts and herbs) in their baths to relax instantly? And almost everyone has wanted to see into the future by having their tarot cards or palm read at least once.

Even before 2020, a witchy theme had been stirring since the 2016 election. Using witches as an empowerment symbol among women worked to rebel against the patriarchy. One example was the widespread appearance of the phrase we are the granddaughters of the witches you werent able to burn on protest signs on t-shirts. Although witchcraft (and all things related to it) is not a gender-specific practice, it is something that draws in a huge amount of women. With the focus on goddesses (and Mother Earth), self-empowerment, and lack of a condescending father figure, it only makes sense why people who feel powerless in other aspects of society love it.

Witchcore is for everyone, not just people who identify as witches. If you are familiar with the ongoing list of specialized aesthetics, Witchcore is like a combination of Naturecore and Dark Academia with a dash of the mystical. There are dusty tomes, crystals, overgrown plants, glass bottles, herbs, and candles. Brooms, cauldrons, tarot cards, and celestial-themed items also pop up often. Most animals are welcome, such as snakes, crows, and owlsand of course, cats. Lots of cats, especially black ones. Basically, anything that you think a witch would own or be associated with will appear in Witchcore.

For clothing choices, black is always in (but other colors are acceptable). Flowy clothing, large-brimmed hats, and silver jewelry round out the look. Inspiration for outfits can come from popular media like American Horror Story: Coven, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and witchy classic The Craft. Or you can try getting ideas from The Owl House. It may be billed as a kids show, but it is full of super cute witchy stuff and is one of the best shows on television.

A popular aspect of Witchcore is the act of sage burning or smudging. Many do not realize this is cultural appropriation. The use of white sage to smudge a person or an area is a tradition specifically from Native American cultures. Not only is it now trendy to do something indigenous people were once punished for practicing, but such mainstream use of the plant is causing over-harvesting, leaving those who use it for spiritual ceremonies with a dwindling supply. Instead of sage burning/smudging, do a smoke cleanse using homegrown sage, incense, or other herbs. People used smoke cleansing practices all over the world, so you are more than likely to find something that fits with your personal heritage.

For me, the trend is kind of a mixed bag. I have been a practicing witch since I delved into the craft around the age of twelve. This means I have traveled down the path for over twenty years. On the plus side, I can now find clothes and housewares that fit my tastes at mainstream stores. I mean, they are now selling Wiccan books at Target. It also makes witches much less scary and off-putting. Witchcore may even be a way for people to explore witchcraft in a non-threatening way and become full-fledged witches.

However, I would like to remind people that some of us are witches who have not had a lot of community acceptance for our aesthetic. In the past, wearing a pentagram or dressing witchy made you a target rather than cool. Teachers, strangers, and co-workers have harassed me for my beliefs over most of my life. So, please remember that for witches, we dont wear certain symbols because they look cute; it is because they hold power and meaning to us.

Overall, if it makes you happy (and doesnt hurt anyone), do what you want. We can all wear big hats, light a candle, and dance under the full Moon while Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac plays in the background.
