A week in pictures: news from around the UK and world – The Northern Echo

Posted: November 7, 2021 at 12:00 pm

HERE are some of the best pictures of the week from around the UK and world.

Tongan activist Uili Lousi stands alongside 'Flare Oceania 2021', created by artist John Gerrard, a real-time moving image showing a simulation of the seas around Tonga with the flag/flare embedded in it.

The image is displayed on a screen on the South Facade of the University of Glasgow to mark Ocean Day at the COP26 climate summit and to raise awareness that the very existence of nations like Tonga are under threat due to the heating of the ocean and rising sea levels.

Also shown is the Italian Airforce acrobatic squad fly above the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, in Romey; and a spectacular display of the Northern Lights seen over Derwentwater, near Keswick in the Lake District.

Greta leads thousands in protest and two former VPs: day five of Cop26 – North Wales Chronicle

Posted: at 12:00 pm

The fifth day of the Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow focused on the streets as thousands of protesters took part in a youth march, while in the blue zone the theme of events was also youth as well as oceans.

Here are some of the takeaways from day five:

Naked warning from Greta

Thousands of young activists joined climate campaigner Greta Thunberg on a march through the streets of Glasgow.

In a speech in George Square, the Swedish teenager criticised the Cop26 summit as a two-week festival of business as usual and blah blah blah.

She told the crowd: The voices of future generations are drowning in their greenwash and empty words and promises. But the facts do not lie. And we know that our emperors are naked.

Al Gores Churchillian stance on renewables

Former US vice-president Al Gore channelled Churchill in a speech to delegates, referencing the wartime prime ministers warning on the rise of fascism we are now entering a period of consequences and calling on them to make it a period of solutions.

He also highlighted an unusual type of renewable resource political will.

He said: We have the urgency, we have the tools we need to solve the climate crisis, we need the legislation. The only missing element is sufficient political will.

But political will is itself a renewable resource, and legislators who are leading in every single country can renew that political will and then translate it into effective solutions.

The jobs not done for John Kerry

Meanwhile, another former US vice-president was in the building as John Kerry, now the US special presidential envoy on climate, told delegates it was job not done.

He hailed the flurry of announcements on phasing out coal, cutting methane emissions, delivering green finance and protecting forests in the first days of the climate summit.

But he said there needed to be a deal out of the talks that was a strong statement and implementable, warning: Let me emphasise as strongly as I can: job not done, job not done the day this ends.

Politicians need Mr Motivator

A number of Scottish journalists were turned away at the door of an event, where Cop26 President Alok Sharma and Scotlands First Minister Nicola Sturgeon were due to respond to demands from youth climate activists, due to space concerns.

Although the rebuff came as something of a blessing in disguise when the youngsters in charge made attendees perform an energiser, where they were told to stand and shake various parts of their body in response to questions posed by the moderators.

Apparently, Mr Sharma missed the energiser, if his speech later in the session was anything to go by.

Mothers call for clean air

The mother of Ella Kissi-Debrah, who died age nine from chronic asthma brought on by Londons polluted air, was among a global coalition of mothers fighting to clean up the air in their home countries.

Unless the air is clean, we are never going to resolve climate change, Rosamund Kissi-Debrah told journalists following a Cop26 fringe event.

It is linked to biodiversity, acid rain, global warming and human health one in five premature deaths are due to air pollution and that is why I am here.

Heated warning on warming oceans

On ocean day at the summit, Tongan activist Uili Lousi highlighted an artwork created to illustrate the danger of warming oceans.

Flare Oceania 2021, created by artist John Gerrard, depicts a real-time moving image showing a simulation of the seas around Tonga with a burning flare embedded in it acting as a flag of climate emergency and a call to action before nations such as Tonga disappear under rising sea levels.

OCEANIA/PAPUA NEW GUINEA – Priority to the missionary formation of children – Agenzia Fides

Posted: October 11, 2021 at 10:01 am

Port Moresby (Agenzia Fides) - On the path of evangelization in Papua New Guinea, it is important to give priority to the formation of children: this is what emerged from a workshop organized in Port Moresby by the Pontifical Missionary Union. During this meeting, promoted in recent weeks by the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Papua New Guinea, Father Victor Roche, the participants were also able to meet, thanks to a connection on the Zoom platform, the new Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union, Father Dihn Ahn Nhue Nguyen, OFM Conv. The meeting discussed the challenges of the new evangelization in relation to the situation in Papua New Guinea. Participants took a closer look at the theme of ongoing formation in the faith for target groups such as children, young people, students and adults. The presentations and discussions highlighted the need to strengthen the pastoral care of children, launching initiatives and programs for children in the different parishes, and using the initiatives promoted by the Pontifical Society of Missionary Childhood (POSI). The meeting allowed those present to elaborate project proposals, individually and in groups, and then share them with everyone. Fr. Thomas Waiaken, from the diocese of Wabag, said he had organized the "children help children" movement in his parish, teaching them to "behave like Jesus, love Jesus, pray to Jesus for other children and to do good to others, like a mission to be accomplished day by day". This pastoral focus, he explained, has led to practical initiatives of fruitful collaboration with the local government in child protection and support for the poorest children. Simon Allis, Director of Child and Family Services for the Protection of Family Life, stressed to those present that "collaboration between civil authorities and the Church is a vital aspect of child protection and the development of society". The meeting also served to clarify the main mission of the PMS and the role and responsibilities of the diocesan Director of the PMS. Fr Jack Pinocy, Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature, presiding over the closing Mass, exhorted all the participants "to be united in Christ, to live for Christ and to build the Church wherever you are sent". Transmitting the message of the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Fermin Emilio Sosa Rodriguez, Fr. Pinocy invited those present to "be faithful to the mission received, with a spirit of responsibility, because this is how we give a witness and a contribution to evangelization". "The mission of the Pontifical Mission Societies is to bring people to Christ", he concluded (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 9/10/2021)

‘Severe’ Outlook Says Caritas In Statement On The Oceania Environment – Scoop.co.nz

Posted: at 10:01 am

Tuesday, 5 October 2021, 6:28 amPress Release: Caritas Aotearoa

Caritas has shifted the dial to 'severe' for four of itsfive environmental indicators, while climate finance for thepoor has remained stubbornly at 'woefully inadequate' for 7years.

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand has monitored fiveenvironmental issues affecting people of the Pacific since2015 through its State of the Environment for Oceaniareports. In conjunction with other Caritas Oceania membersand community-based partners throughout the Pacific, theyhave told the story of how extreme weather, rising seas andcoastal erosion, access to safe local food and water, offshore mining and drilling, and inadequate climate financesupporting the poor are affecting the peoples ofOceania.

Last week, almost 80 people gathered forCaritas Oceania's online talanoa "Towards our Future Home:Imagining the Future we Need" to consider the enviromentalchallanges and solutions facing the region, through theexperience of the poor.

The inter-related nature ofthe changes was illustrated by Caritas Tonga DirectorSuliana Falemaka: "Climate change is impacting our lands, coasts, water supplies and weather patterns. In Tonga, wehave longer and more frequent droughts People inlow-lying coastal areas are seeing stronger storm, surge andflood events; while saltwater is contaminating groundwaterand affecting drinking supplies."

KositatinoTikomaibolatagane of Caritas Fiji said, "Coastal erosion hasbeen affecting many communities in the Pacific, especiallyhere in Fiji. More than three communities have beenrelocated elsewhere and 40 more communities are in thepipeline for the government plan to relocate them due to theproblem of coastal erosion which resulted from sea levelrise. A road which was accessible to vehicles up till lastyear is not accessible anymore because erosion has destroyedit."

The talanoa also highlighted the need to fullyinvolve youth and Indigenous perspectives, and prioritisingbasic human rights to healthy food and safe drinking water."Technology needs to be used appropriately for the commongood. Youth and Indigenous perspective need to be fullyincorporated into problem solving. "

"If we look afterour land, it will look after us," said Mina Pomare-Peita,principal of TeKura Taumata O Panguru. "As Indigenous, we need to takeback and understand what time looks like for us. How do weobserve the seasons, how do we observe our land, our ocean, our sky, and from there, how do we createsolutions."

In November, thousands of people willgather in Glasgow for the COP26 meeting about theenvironment. Strong urgent action is needed on many frontsto turn things around for Oceania people directly impactedby sea level rise, coastal erosion and extreme weatherevents.

"The urgent transition away from fossil fuelscan't be used to justify other forms of exploitation ofpeople and nature," said Julianne Hickey, Director ofCaritas Aotearoa New Zealand. We continue our call for a banon seabed mining in both national and international waters. The people of Oceania rely on the ocean for theirlivelihoods. Seabed mining puts all that atrisk".

"The latest IPCC report in August warned ofhuge climatic changes for us all. But it also signalled, bigchanges in behaviour by us now could start to start to makea difference in 20 years," said Julianne Hickey. "That's along time politically, but it's not a long time to make areal difference for our children's children."

Automotive filters market post COVID-19 is estimated to grow from USD 19.5 billion in 2021 to USD 23.1 billion by 2026, at a CAGR of 3.4% – Yahoo…

Posted: at 10:01 am

during the forecast period. Factors contributing to growth of automotive filters market can be attributed to stringent emission and fuel economy regulations. Moreover, advancement in filtering technology enabling more efficient filtration of cabin air will increase the demand for automotive filters in the coming years.

New York, Oct. 11, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Reportlinker.com announces the release of the report "Automotive Filters Market by Filter Type, Air & Cabin Filter Media, Fuel & Vehicle Type, Aftermarket - Global Forecast to 2026" - https://www.reportlinker.com/p05385674/?utm_source=GNW

With progression in time, the COVID-19 impact has severely disrupted the supply chain for entire automotive ecosystem. This has halted production facilities across the globe resulting in disruption in the exports of the automotive components.

This scenario is expected to affect automotive filters market, as the growth of the market is directly related to the production of the vehicles. The global production of vehicle pre-COVID-19 was expected to reach from ~90-95 million units in 2020 to ~110-115 million units by 2025.

According to OICA, though global vehicle production declined by 5.2% between 2018-2019, the production outlook was supposed to showcase significant growth from 2021-2022 owing to multiple steps taken by OEMs, as well as some government, to attract customers.

Brake Dust filter is the fastest growing market, by filter typeThe brake dust filter is projected to be the fastest-growing segment in the automotive filters market.Brake dust filters are expected to play a significant role in reducing pollution caused by fine brake dust particles.

Brake dust filters can be installed to existing spaces around disk brakes. They can also be equipped in all types of drives, from electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles to classical gasoline or diesel vehicles.

The market for brake dust filters has higher growth potential in Europe and North America, owing to technological advancement and a higher emphasis on pollution in these regions. All these factors are expected to drive the market growth for brake dust filters.

Dryer Cartridges for batteries is the largest market for electric vehicle OE market, by filter typeThe market for dryer cartridges for BEV is estimated to be larger than PHEV by value and is also projected to register a higher CAGR during the forecast period.Dryer cartridges for batteries protect the battery system from water condensation, as the battery is regarded to be the most significant component in BEVs.

The installation of these cartridges enhances the overall protection of vehicles. The breathing of the battery system gets moistness into the interior, which can lead to the risk of water condensation at cooling plates.

The air dryer cartridge adsorbs the water moisture and prevents water condensation, which could lead to electric shorts.Dryer cartridges for batteries are a compulsory component for all-electric and hybrid vehicle types, as electric short circuits can lead to serious damage to the vehicle systems.

Thus, considering the vital role of the dryer cartridges, the market is expected to remain the largest in the coming years.

Asia Oceania is estimated to be the fastest-growing, and North America to be the largest market market for automotive filters

The Asia Oceania region has emerged as a promising market for the automotive industry and OEMs across the globe. The primary reason behind this trend is the Chinese market, which has evolved into the largest producer and consumer of automobiles across the globe.

Vehicle parc is the key factor influencing the growth of the automotive filters market.China accounts for the largest share of the total vehicle parc in Asia Oceania.

Development in road infrastructure and an increase in miles driven annually are expected to drive the market growth for oil filters.A comparatively shorter replacement life of oil filters will require a replacement periodically.

Also, large fleet vehicle volume, high environmental pollution, and low cost of filters are expected to drive the market in this region.

North America is the largest market as automotive filter is a mature technology in US and Canada. Also, the stringent emission standards for enhanced performance and comfort is expected to drive the market.

Although no standard regulation is present in Mexico for automotive filters, developments are underway to harmonize them with the US. Thus, the growth o automotive filters is quite evident and the demand is expected to grow significantly in the region.

How PEACE’s Tally and Babip went from Worlds to NA Academy, and back to Worlds in less than a year – Dot Esports

Posted: at 10:01 am

Walking away from home is never easy, but when the door remains open on your way out, theres always a chance to be welcomed back. For Tally and Babip, two of Oceanias most prestigious League of Legends players, the door back to the Southern Hemisphere seemed closed forever when the OPL, Oceanias top League circuit, shut down in December 2020. The pair of stars had made the decision to pursue careers in North America, and for the time being, that decision seemed final.

Luckily, Tally and Babip were fresh off a trip to the League of Legends World Championship, where they had combined their efforts to bring their squad, Legacy Esports, within inches of Oceanias first appearance at the Worlds group stage. They were ready to use that momentum to take the next step in their respective careers: play on the stage of a major region.

In North America, Tally and Babip used their recently-found notoriety to earn roster spots with Golden Guardians and TSM, respectively, albeit on their Academy-level rosters. The duo spent their entire Spring Split tenures in the Academy scene, though, failing to break the mold and play even one game for their respective organizations on the LCS stage.

But Golden Guardians and TSM had their reasons for not promoting the one-time Oceanic Worlds representatives.

In the case of Tally, who changed positions to top lane ahead of the 2021 season, Golden Guardians werent looking to break up the previously synergized duo of Iconic and Niles, who had played together at Maryville University. Plus, the team was in no position to role-swap the Oceanic import back into the mid lane, effectively leapfrogging two playersYunbee and Ablazeolivein the process.

As for Babip and TSM, the teams jungle position had already been occupied by the soon-to-be LCS MVP Spica. Babip was merely an afterthought in the shadow of the leagues newest face.

With no direct routes to the main LCS stage in sight, Tally and Babip, once North American hopefuls, were released by their parent organizations halfway through the 2021 season. The two packed their bags and headed back to Oceania ahead of the Summer Split, looking for a chance to once again dominate the scene they had known like the back of their hand.

It was completely unexpected for me. I was playing in NA and I thought that was the next step in my career, Babip told Dot Esports. I would play in Academy, I would play in LCS, and keep going up. The idea of going backwards is hard for me to deal with.

Babip and Tally would find a home in PEACE, reuniting as teammates just several months after they had lifted an OPL trophy together. Within weeks, their chemistry was reignited, and the two burned through Oceania again, capturing the LCO Split Two championship, and booking their ticket to Worlds.

I think if [Babip] never came back to Australia, I think I would have just taken the split off, Tally told Dot Esports. I dont think I would have been playing and trying to go to Worlds. I see us as a duo being completely unstoppable in Oceania. We could win with any other three players. Hes a really close friend of mine. Im glad that we were able to share the journey together.

Together, the two had used their comradery to return to a scene that they had dominated before. Babip and Tally went on an unprecedented playoff run ahead of Worlds, as the duo ranked in the top three in both kills and KDA across the entirety of the LCO playoff bracket, according to League stats site Oracles Elixir. In Babips eyes, to give up opportunities in North America and do anything less than winning a championship in Oceania would have been devastating.

Tally and I had a lot of motivation from that experience, Babip recounted of his time in North America. We were like OK, were going to Worlds. Fuck these guys. Were going back to Worlds and proving these guys wrong.

Now, at Worlds, Babip and Tally have found their stride and are continuing to represent the region they have for years.

For Tally specifically, the prospect of playing with Golden Guardians Academy in North America was a fruitless effort. Returning to Oceania proved to the 24-year-old that the grass hadnt been greener and that his chances of developing a name for himself in Leagues professional scene were best in his home region.

When I arrived in NA, the culture wasnt really what I enjoyed in professional League of Legends. I really enjoy the high-highs and being the best you can, said Tally. In Academy, theres no real end goal. Youre just playing to get scouted. Theres no international [play] or no finals. I knew deep down that it wasnt really something for me. When I was released by Golden Guardians, I was half-really upset and on the other hand, I got another chance at something I enjoy.

In the case of Babip, though, the mentality is flipped. Despite coming back to Oceania to represent the region for the third straight year at Worlds, hes got his eyes dead-set on getting to play in a major regionbe it the LCS or even the LEC.

After three and a half seasons of competing in Oceania, Babip is ready to move on. Maybe for good this time.

Its just not big enough for me in OCE, he said. I want something bigger. I want something more. Im definitely looking to go overseas again to either Europe or NA.

But even looking beyond the 2021 season, Tally, Babip, and the countless other players who inhabit the ever-rebuilding Oceanic scene can look forward to more appearances at international events in the future. Earlier this year, Oceanic representatives Pentanet.GG earned the regions first group stage appearance at an international event at MSI, while PEACE have the opportunity to do so on the Worlds stage this weekend. Even despite the breakaway of the OPL and the lack of infrastructure that Oceania has in comparison to the rest of the worlds leagues, teams like PEACE and others continue to fight back.

If you look at it right now, we have the complete bare-bones, but we keep doing better and better every single time, Tally said. I really feel that even if a little advantage came, that we would just break expectations completely. With what we have right now compared to everyone else, its unbelievable how we keep doing better and better every single time we come back.

Tally, Babip, and PEACE will play to remain alive at Worlds tomorrow, Oct. 8, in an elimination best-of-five against RED Canids of the CBLOL. Should they win that match, as well as another winner-take-all best-of-five against North Americas Cloud9, theyll strut into the Worlds group stage for the first time in the history of Oceania.

World food prices rose 1,2% in September and 32,8% year to year, FAO – MercoPress

Sunday, October 10th 2021 - 19:30 UTC FAO Dairy Price Index increased 1.5% from August, as solid global import demand in Europe and Oceania drove up quotations for all dairy products

World food commodity prices rose in September, led by tightening supply conditions and robust demand for staples such as wheat and palm oil, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported. FAO's Food Price Index averaged 130.0 points in September, up 1.2% from August and 32.8% higher than in September 2020. The index tracks monthly changes in the international prices of commonly traded food commodities.

The FAO Cereal Price Index in September increased by 2.0 percent from the previous month, with world wheat prices up almost 4% - and as much as 41% higher than a year earlier due to tightening export availabilities amid strong demand. World rice prices also rose in September, while those of maize increased by a moderate 0.3 percent averaging 38% higher year-on-year - as improved global crop prospects and the start of harvests in the United States of America and Ukraine largely countered the impact of hurricane-related port disruptions in the U.S.

Among major cereals, wheat will be the focus in the coming weeks as demand need to be tested against fast rising prices, says FAO Senior Economist Abdolreza Abbassian.

The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index was up 1.7 percent on the month and about 60% from September 2020 as international palm oil prices reached 10-year highs due to robust global import demand and concerns over migrant labor shortages impacting production in Malaysia. World rapeseed oil prices also appreciated markedly, while soy and sunflower oil quotations declined.

The FAO Dairy Price Index increased by 1.5 percent from August, as solid global import demand and seasonal factors in Europe and Oceania drove up international quotations for all dairy products, especially butter.

The FAO Sugar Price Index was 0.5 percent higher from the previous month and 53.5% from a year earlier underpinned by adverse weather conditions and higher ethanol prices in Brazil, the worlds largest sugar exporter. Slowing global import demand and good production prospects in India and Thailand curbed the upward pressure.

The FAO Meat Price Index was virtually unchanged in September from the previous month and up 26.3% on an annualized basis. Ovine and bovine meat quotations rose due to tight supply conditions, while those for poultry and pig meat declined amid ample global supply volumes of the former and lower demand for the latter in China and Europe.

All Whites reminded of ‘need to be more clinical’ after win over Curaao – Stuff.co.nz

Wins against teams from outside Oceania dont come around often for the All Whites.

After beating Curaao 2-1 on Sunday [NZ time], they now have a total of nine in the past 15 years.

But they were left with plenty to ponder after allowing their opponents to come back into the contest when they could have been out of sight.

.

The All Whites celebrate their opening goal against Curaao.

A free kick from Bill Tuiloma which took a deflection and a fierce finish from Chris Wood following a turnover high up the pitch gave the All Whites a 2-0 lead at halftime at Bahrain National Stadium.

But they didnt take the chances that were there to extend it further and after Rangelo Janga capitalised on a defensive error with 20 minutes to play, they finished the game mostly on the back foot, seeking to prevent an equaliser.

They did just that, with Stefan Marinovic making a vital save following a quick free kick, and were ultimately able to celebrate at the end of a mostly promising outing.

The referee shifted between being too lenient and too onerous. He could have blown for fouls in the lead-up to Woods goal as well as in the lead-up to Jangas and there was frustration at his decision-making from both sides, though it never got out of hand.

All Whites coach Danny Hay was pleased to have secured his first win in his third match in charge of the senior national team, which was also its first in almost 700 days, when he spoke via Zoom from the car park afterwards.

He was pleased with how they had pressed and won the ball in dangerous areas, an approach that was aided by Curaaos insistence on playing out when they werent equipped to do so under pressure.

And while he lamented the fact they didnt kill the game off and ended up having to grind out a result defensively in the end, he thought it would be valuable lesson for his young team.

If you look at the chances we had in the first half and early in the second, there were some really good opportunities, and we could have won three or four-nil comfortably.

.

All Whites goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic made a crucial late intervention to deny Curaao midfielder Leandro Bacuna.

But again it's a very good learning for a very young group that we need to be more clinical in those periods, or you allow teams to get back into the game.

Seven of the All Whites starters were aged 22 or younger, including teenage debutants Matt Garbett and Marko Stamenic, who were able to display their technical ability in a match Hay described as robust.

Right backs Niko Kirwan and Kelvin Kalua were the other All Whites debutants, in a position where the countrys established options were unavailable as a result of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Kirwan was at fault for Curaaos goal after mistiming a free header in his own box, but while Hay acknowledged it was a frustrating way to concede, he wasnt going to let it take away from the rest of his maiden outing, which ended when he was replaced by Kalua in the 87th minute.

For such a long period, Niko was excellent, Hay said. I thought he showed a lot of intensity, a lot of fight, and really wanted to defend and do his work for the team.

The All Whites now have two days to prepare for their second match of the October window, where they will face a strong opponent in Bahrain [kickoff 5am Wednesday NZ time], but wont be able to call on Sarpreet Singh, who has been released back to his German club Jahn Regensburg

I thought Sarpreet was outstanding. Hay said in singling him out for praise, alongside Callum McCowatt and Stamenic.

I think he showed his class and a lot of the game plan for us was trying to get him on the ball facing forward in dangerous areas and then trying to reward some of the forward runs.

He's an incredibly intelligent player and he's one that we need to look after and nurture and with that in mind we're letting him go back to Germany now, so he's not going to be playing against Bahrain.

We're absolutely aware that he is in a critical period of his professional career and that he needs to cement himself fully in the German game, which we know is one of the toughest places in the world.

Bill Tuiloma left the field late with a hip flexor injury, but the initial assessment was that he would be available to play Bahrain. Fellow centre back Michael Boxall had been unable to start, having been ill and unable to train during the week, but came on in place of Tuiloma and could be set for a bigger role.

All Whites 2 (Bill Tuiloma 9, Chris Wood 33) Curaao 1 (Rangelo Janga 72). HT: 2-0
