"By 2025, nootropic drinks will be worth over US$7bn – that’s a conservative estimate." just-drinks speaks to Angela Kahn, co-founder of…

Posted: May 29, 2020 at 1:01 am

Seven years ago,Angela Kahn was in need of a healthier alternative to coffee and energy drinks. Within two years, she'd quit her job as global brand & communications director at BP to start her own business, Tesla Nootropics Group, in 2016.The launch this month of the RTD line of TNG's Nubrain brandgave just-drinks the excuse to speak to Khan about the potential for nootropics, the challenges the segment faces and her hopes for the future of TNG.

Tesla Nootropics Group launched its line of Nubrain functional waters earlier this month

just-drinks: What are nootropics?

Angela Kahn: Nootropics are substances that can improve mental performance. In order for an ingredient to be described as nootropic, it has to not have any negative side effects.People who are really into nootropics know how to combine them and make their own 'stack', to see what works best for them - depending on their specific needs and their reactions to different ingredients.

Our products are based on natural ingredients only. The journey has taken about four years - drinks are extremely complicated. They have to fulfil both the purpose of having an effect on the consumer and also be able to satisfy the taste buds.

Energy drinks have been around for close to 30 years now. There's huge saturation in the energy drinks market - it's our belief that at some point, energy drinks are going to start declining and healthier drinks that have a cognitive effect will be the future.

j-d: What makes you think the nootropic sector has such a bright future?

AK: If you see the amount of products being launched [every] year, you can see how this industry is growing. There's a forecast that by 2025, it's going to be over US$7bn in value - that's a conservative estimate.

I go to different exhibitions, like VitaFoods in Geneva, and I can see nootropics are one of the products to watch. They're here to stay and I believe they're going to take a substantial share of the supplements market.

j-d: You used to work for BP.What made you realise you wanted to work with nootropics?

AK: I was a global brand director -quite a heavy role. In a company like BP,there were a lot of things I had to be alert about. There came a point when I felt I needed to take my vitamins to get rid of mental fatigue - that's when I stumbled across nootropics. It triggered my interest because I felt this was something that's going to help me manage my daily life andbe good at what I do. That's when I started experimenting with different nootropic products.

I got to thinking: "How about working on a beverage that can be available in the mainstream? It should taste goodand it should replace people's Red Bull or their coffee."

j-d:Can you talk us through the range of Nubrain waters?

AK: Nubrain Brainstorm makes you feel more invigorated mentally;it helps you feel more creative. Then, we have [Nubrain] Nightflight and a more intense version, [Nubrain] Mission, whichhas been tested on military staff in the US. We gave samples to the Delta Force - we were working with them over a period of a year, and that's how we developed Nubrain Mission. The drink gives you everything that Brainstorm does, but Brainstorm has eight nootropics; Mission has 11.

There's also Nubrain Prodigy, which is for children.

Angela Khan co-founded Tesla Nootropics Group in late-2016

j-d: How is Nubrain Prodigy different from the others?

AK: Today's childrenface as many challenges as adults, from the social challenges in school to needing tobe able to concentrate. I have two children and I see how difficult things are now compared to even ten years ago. With Nubrain Prodigy, the ingredients are natural, they're FDA-compliant for children under the age of 18, there's no sugar in the product and they taste good. It's important to maintain all these standards for a product to be suitable for kids.

j-d: What's the competitive landscape like in nootropics?

AK: The competition is definitely increasing. On the one hand, it's worryingwhile, on the other, it's good that a category is being generated.

When we started in 2016, we were giving out samples to wholesalers and retailer, butthey weren't aware of the category at all. They were telling us: "If this was an energy drink, then things would be easy. But, we don't know what nootropics are."

Even though it's quite a straightforward concept, people were feeling sceptical about it. A lot of education was needed, both for the consumer and for business partners.

In the past, we've had issues, like where should the product be displayed? Next to energy drinks? Next to aloe vera and coconut water? Where's it going to go? So, nowthere's a category merging, I think that's going to be beneficial.

j-d: Why did you name your company Tesla?

AK: It definitely has nothing to do with cars! It has to do with the inventor Nikola Tesla. He was one of the brightest minds that existed, with thousands of inventions. We felt that his name would be ideal for nootropics.

Our team recentlysurveyed more than 50,000 entrepreneurs to see what was keeping them from becoming peak performers, and the results were staggering. The majority were not only overly depressed, stressedand overwhelmed, but they also suffered from various gastrointestinal disorders and were getting poor sleep. At the same time, most of them felt anxious and failed to exercise a minimum of five days a week.

According to the latest research from the American Institute of Stress, the most chronic physical symptoms of stress are fatigue, headachesand upset stomach. These should be our first red flags telling us we have to discontinue on the path to ruin. But sadly, most of us punch on through andtake an over-the-counter drug to deaden the symptoms, not understanding what its doing to our bodies in the long run.

If I could give one piece of advice to everyone, it's to take symptoms of stress seriously and begin to listen to your body and its needs.

This isnt all doom and gloom; there is a light at the end of this tunnel. Below are proven strategies that can help you take back the years youve lost and become the person you were meant to be. And along the way, you might evendiscover more about you and how your journey will be different from anyone else's.

It seems intuitive to move your body when youve been sitting in front of your computer for eighthours straight or troubleshooting issues into the late hours. Still, trends are showing that we find ourselves more and more distracted from any healthy activity.

Studies from Scripps Health show our screen time has increased to approximately 11 hours a day! That means our eyes and minds are plugged in and tuned out for most of our waking life. We understand the distinct negative factors like blue light affecting sleep and causing eye strain; however, the Scripps study found the gray matter in the brain, the part that grows new synapses when we experience new knowledge or information, is atrophying. We need physical and emotional experiences to keep our gray matter healthy.

Some of you reading this will want to jump-start your exercise regimen with an intense program, which is beneficial. However, what if you lack the energy to do so? There are activities you can build into your week that can make a difference. Taking 10,000 steps in your day can not only burn off caloriesbut give your brain and body the necessary reset it needs to decompress from stress.

If youre ready to ramp things up, thenHigh-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) could be for you. It'sbecome a popular science-based fitness program with thousands of at-home video routines ranging from sevenminutes to longer than half an hour, all touting benefits that last longer than the workout itself. Its based on studies that show that when the body is put through intense spurts of energy in a relatively short amount of time, with quick recovery times, the activity triggers your metabolism and keeps it burning for hours after youve completed the set. With most people saying that time is the reason they cant exercise, HIIT seems to be their answer.

You can find hundreds of apps online that help you meditate and recenter your mind. However, did you know you can also do active meditation, which can give you the same effects? Active meditation is doing an activity without judging it. This could be as simple as going for a walk, washing the dishes, coloring or something more strenuous likebiking, rowing or running. As long as youre focused on your breath, not judging or putting thought into the activity, your brain will turn off the amygdala, or center of emotions, to help it calm down and find peace.

Journaling can do the same thing as meditation. People who journal daily report less stress and find more creativity. Journaling also helps to set goals and organize thoughts. (You can learn more about the journal I designed that factors in both psychology and biochemistry so you are optimized for peak physical and mental well-being right here.)

Nootropics are supplements and other substances that may improve cognitive function mainly executive functions, memory, creativity or motivation in healthy individuals. You may be familiar with several of them already, like caffeine, ashwagandhaand L-theanine. There are many more that can help boost your brain function, giving you more cognitive energy and drive. Qualia, for instances,is creating quality stacksof nootropics for various cognitive needs.

If there was one thing that really jumped outin the survey, it was more than 61 percent of respondents saying they crave carbohydrates. Its the first go-to food we want when we become stressed. Cutting out refined carbohydrates for more complex carbohydrates like dark green vegetables, and ridding our diet of sugar, can reset your bodys inflammation to more manageable levels.

Our survey demonstrated many signs of inflammatory markers:

Forty-sevenpercentsuffer from any of the following two or more times per week, i.e.constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, bloating, etc.

Thirty-four percenthave chronic pain.

Fifty-seven percent feel chronic fatigue.

Seventy percent feel anxious.

Why do we need to know if our body is inflamed? Inflammation is the first telltale sign that your body is fighting an underlying stressor that may cause damage if unexamined. The five established signs of inflammation are heat, pain, redness, swellingand loss of function. Most people run to the drugstore to find something to ease the symptoms without ever looking more in-depth into why they are suffering in the first place.

According to Scripps Health, The most common way to measure inflammation is to conduct a blood test for C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), which is a marker of inflammation. Doctors also measure homocysteine levels to evaluate chronic inflammation. Finally, physicians test for HbA1C a measurement of blood sugar to assess damage to red blood cells.

Now we have ways to test for these inflammatory markers in the privacy of your own home, and often less expensive than having to go to a lab or doctor. You can find home-testing kits online (more about those below) that can detect most inflammatory markers. However, you will need a doctor to go over the results and find the necessary protocol.

Home-testing kits are becoming more widely used in functional-medicine circles, helping patients get precise data on the causation to their acute and chronic illnesses. By being able to do many types of medical-grade tests within the comfort of your home, keeping costs to a minimum, patients can send their functional-medicine doctors their results, at which point acomprehensive and personalized protocol can be put into place.

Many of our symptoms are due to deficiencies in essential minerals and vitamins, hormonal and dietary changes and food sensitivitives. Home-test kits can help you learn what youre deficient in.

Best Nootropics (Smart Drugs) to Unlock Your True Brain

Posted: April 11, 2020 at 4:07 am

Nootropics sometimes calledsmart drugs are compounds that enhance brain function. Theyre becoming a popular way to give your mind an extra boost. According to one Telegraph report, up to 25% of students at leading UK universities have taken the prescription smart drug modafinil [1], and California tech startup employees are trying everything from Adderall to LSD to push their brains into a higher gear [2].

Ive been actively benefitting from nootropics since 1997, when I was struggling with cognitive performance and ordered almost $1000 worth of smart drugs from Europe (the only place where you could get them at the time). I remember opening the unmarked brown package and wondering whether the pharmaceuticals and natural substances would really enhance my brain.

They did, and Ive been a big fan of certain cognitive enhancers ever since.

Im wary of others, though. The trouble with using a blanket term like nootropics is that you lump all kinds of substances in together. Technically, you could argue that caffeine and cocaine are both nootropics, but theyre hardly equal. With so many ways to enhance your brain function, many of which have significant risks, its most valuable to look at nootropics on a case-by-case basis. Heres a list of 9 nootropics, along with my thoughts on each.

I started taking modafinil while getting my MBA at Wharton. At the same time, I was also working at a start-up that later sold for $600 million in value, so you can imagine how busy I was. I wanted a way to keep my brain running.

When I first started taking modafinil, I felt more like myself than I had in years. I took it just about every day in varying doses for 8 years (with a physicians prescription). It gave me energy and changed my life. I would not be the biohacker I am today without modafinil.

When I worked on the Bulletproof Diet book, I wanted to verify that the effects I was getting from Bulletproof Coffee were not coming from modafinil, so I stopped using it and measured my cognitive performance while I was off of it. What I found was that on Bulletproof Coffee and the Bulletproof Diet, my mental performance was almost identical to my performance on modafinil. I still travel with modafinil, and Ill take it on occasion, but while living a Bulletproof lifestyle I rarely feel the need.

Theres a slight risk (about 5 in a million people) of having a life-threatening immune reaction to modafinil. Its the same reaction that happens with ibuprofen and other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), so if you know you dont react well to NSAIDs, talk to your doctor before taking modafinil.

One reason I like modafinil is that it enhances dopamine release, but it binds to your dopamine receptors differently than addictive substances like cocaine and amphetamines do, which may be part of the reason modafinil shares many of the benefits of other stimulants but doesnt cause addiction or withdrawal symptoms. [3] [4] It does increase focus, problem-solving abilities, and wakefulness, but it is not in the same class of drugs as Adderall, and it is not a classical stimulant. Modafinil is off of patent, so you can get it generically, or order it from India. Its a prescription drug, so you need to talk to a physician.

You can also try armodafinil, which is a more purified form of modafinil with only biologically identical molecules in it. It has nearly identical and sometimes stronger effects. Its very expensive without insurance.

If you dont want to get a prescription, theresadrafinil, which has similarities, but I wouldnt recommend taking it regularly because it stresses your liver a lot.

Normally prescribed modafinil dose: 50-200 mg, taken in the morning (unless you want to be awake all night)

Normally prescribed armodafinil dose: 100-200 mg, taken in the morning

Adrafinil dose: 300 mg, taken in the morning

Nicotine can be a powerful nootropic if you take it carefully and sparingly. Heres a full guide to using nicotine as a nootropic, complete with pros and cons, risks, dose recommendations, and advice about what form of nicotine to use.

I do NOT recommend smoking cigarettes or using tobacco to get your nicotine. Im talking about very small doses that are far lower than youd get from smoking. Nicotine has a direct effect on your mitochondrial energy, and just about anything that increases mitochondrial function is going to make your brain work better.

Big Pharma has recommended amphetamine (Adderall) for ADHD sufferers for years now. Its also popular on college campuses around exam time. Too bad, because there are much better choices.

Amphetamine has substantial risks. In healthy adults, itimproves attention, focus, motivation to work, and short-term memory, all by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine release in your prefrontal cortex. [5] [6] Amphetamine also decreases fatigue, but it makes you jittery and can increase anxiety.

What worries me about amphetamine is its addictive potential, and the fact that it can cause stress and anxiety. Research says its only slightly likely to cause addiction in people with ADHD, [7] but we dont know much about its addictive potential in healthy adults. We all know the addictive potential of methamphetamine, and amphetamine is closely related enough to make me nervous about so many people giving it to their children. Amphetamines cause withdrawal symptoms, so the potential for addiction is there.

If you want a stimulant, drink coffee.

Because smart drugs like modafinil, nicotine, and Adderall come with drawbacks, I developed my own line of nootropics, including Forbose and SmartMode, thats safe, widely available, and doesnt require a prescription. Forskolin, found in Forbose, has been a part of Indian Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. In addition to being fun to say, forskolin increases cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a molecule essential to learning and memory formation. [8]

I have used forskolin for more than a decade.

Forskolin is especially effective if you combine it with artichoke extract. Artichoke extract inhibits PDE4, an enzyme that breaks down cAMP. PDE4 inhibitors make cAMP more available, and when you add in artichoke extracts cAMP-enhancing effects, you get a significant boost to learning, memory, and motivation.

Or you get a headache and an energy crash when you come down.

That may be because upping cAMP uses more dopamine than your brain usually would. It affects different people differently. You only know if you tryit.

As part of our Bulletproof Brain Blend, Smart Mode contains artichoke extract, along with other cognitive-enhancing ingredients. Take with Forbose, to get your dose of forskolin. Forbose is a unique formulation that helps your body produce more energy to power through intense physical and mental activity.

Smart Mode dose: 3 softgels daily

Forbose dose: 2 capsules before or after activity

L-theanine is a major component of black and green tea. On its own, theanine promotes relaxation, [9] alertness, and arousal.[10]

Theanine also works synergistically with caffeine. Together, the two increase reaction time, memory, and mental endurance. [11]

You can get your theanine from a capsule like Zen Mode, or you can drink a cup or two of green tea. If you decide to do the green tea, look for tea thats grown in the shade, because shade-grown green tea typically has much higher levels of theanine.

L-theanine dose: 200 mg. Take 3Zen Modesoftgels with your morning coffee, or you can take it at night, like me.

Thisis a small water plant native to India. Bacopais an adaptogen it helps your body adapt to stress. It also improves memory in healthy adults[12] and enhances attention and mood in people over 65. [13] Scientists still dont fully understand how Bacopa works, but they do know it takes time to work; study participants didnt feel its memory-enhancing effects until theyd been supplementing with it daily for 4 weeks, so if you try Bacopa, stick with it for a month before you give up on it.

Bacopa suppresses sperm production in male mice, so you may want to skip it if youre trying to conceive. [14] It didnt affect the mices testosterone or sex drive, though.

A lot of nootropic companies include Bacopa in their stacks, but they often dont use enough to give you real benefits. You want at least 750 mg daily. Take Bacopa with a fat source to increase its absorption.

Bacopa monnieri dose: At least 750 mg daily, taken with a source of fat

Unfair Advantage supports your mitochondria, the power plants of your cells, with two different ingredients:

You have the highest density of mitochondria in your brains prefrontal cortex, which helps to explain why I feel Unfair Advantage in my head first. You have the second highest density in your heart, which is probably why I feel it in the center of my chest next. Mitochondrial energizers can have profound nootropic effects! At higher doses mitochondrial energizers also make for an excellent pre-workout supplements.

Unfair Advantage dose: 1-4 ampules, taken any time

KetoPrimeis another powerful nootropic. It contains oxaloacetate, a compound that can shield your brain from environmental toxins.

Common environmental toxins pesticides, for example cause your brain to release glutamate (a neurotransmitter). Your brain needs glutamate to function, but when you create too much of it it becomes toxic and starts killing neurons. Oxaloacetate protects rodents from glutamate-induced brain damage.[17] Of course, we need more research to determine whether or not oxaloacetate has the same effect on humans.

KetoPrimeis a great way to give your brain a little extra boost. In animal studies, it also modifies the Krebs Cycle, shifting the ratio of NADH to NAD+, which makes mitochondrial energy production more efficient.

KetoPrime dose: 1 lozenge, taken in the morning

NeuroMaster is a supplement I helped formulate when I learned about the power of coffee fruit extract. This stuff significantly increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels even more than exercise. BDNF is a crucial neuroprotein that helps increase neuroplasticity and create new neurons, resulting in better memory and focus.

This is important for the short-term, and essential for the long-term because you naturally lose BDNF as you age. Lower BDNF levels are associated with age-related hippocampal shrinkage and memory decline.[18]

100 mg of extract of coffee fruit (the red fruit surrounding coffee beans) raised BDNF by about 140% in several studies.[19][20][21] The boost lasted for a few hours.

NeuroMaster dose: 1 cap, taken in the morning with or without food

When you first start taking nootropics, sometimes youll feel like nothing is happening. Thats what I experienced. Then, a week later, I quit taking them, and noticed their absence immediately. This is because when your brain works better, it feels so natural that its hard to notice unless you have a great degree of self-awareness.

On the other hand, sometimes youll feel a great cognitive boost as soon as you take a pill. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. I find, for example, that modafinil makes you more of what you already are. That means if you are already kind of a dick and you take modafinil, you might act like a really big dick and regret it. It certainly happened to me! I like to think that Ive done enough hacking of my brain that Ive gotten over that programming and that when I use nootropics they help me help people.

You can also get profoundly depressed. One of the nootropics I did not write about here, Lucidril, has superb anti-aging and cognitive benefits for some people, but others get deeply sad after taking it. After three days on Lucidril I felt entirely hopeless about my life. Fortunately, Id done my research and I stopped taking it immediately.

There is inherent risk in experimenting with pharmaceuticals, or illegal drugs like LSD. The risk is greater than it is with most natural substances. You can have a psychotic experience if you take too much LSD; youre more likely to get a big headache if you take too much of a choline-stimulating herbal substance.

It also pays to check the purity of your nootropics. Ive seen some companies promoting pre-made nootropic stacks that contain ingredients like blue agave (fructose!), food coloring even pieces of metal. Read your labels!

I have great hope that medicine will wake up to the amazing benefits of nootropics and begin to incorporate them into society. Many of them not only increase your quality of life, they make your brain more resilient to the environment around you. We could all use a little more that.

Before you try nootropics, I suggest you start with the basics: get rid of the things in your diet and life that reduce cognitive performance first. That is easiest. Then, add in energizers like Brain Octane and clean up your diet. Then, go for the herbals and the natural nootropics. Use the pharmaceuticals selectively only after youve figured out your basics.

The truth is that, almost 20 years ago when my brain was failing and I was fat and tired, I did not know to follow this advice. I bought $1000 worth of smart drugs from Europe, took them all at once out of desperation, and got enough cognitive function to save my career and tackle my metabolic problems. With the information we have now, you dont need to do that. Please learn from my mistakes!

3 ‘Mental Hacks’ To Improve Focus That Every Entrepreneur Should Know – Entrepreneur

Posted: April 6, 2020 at 5:05 pm

April6, 20205 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.

When it comes to being an entrepreneur, the focus and productivity levels will make or break you. Even just a 10 per cent advantage can be the difference between a wildly successful initial public offering, and having to close up shop.

With such wild competition in the business world, being able to focus and improve productivity are becoming more and more importantand as the world becomes more globally connected, your competition will only grow fiercer.

Any entrepreneur knows this, and were also willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. So, with that in mind, here are the top mental hacks that every entrepreneur who wants her business to succeed should know.

Its no secret that Silicon Valley executives have been using nootropics like modafinil for years to gain an edge in the market. What most people dont know, however, is that theres many other nootropics available to use, as well.

While the idea of using nootropics to boost productivity, improve focus, and increase energy levels might be off-putting to some, theres a lot of clinical research to back the effectiveness of nootropics.

In fact, according to Healthline, these nootropics have been clinically proven to work, and have several research studies backing their safety and efficacy:

To improve focus, many entrepreneurs use nootropics such as caffeine, nicotine, Noopept, and modafinil to start. While modafinil is only available with a doctors prescription, many of these other nootropics can be bought over the counter.

For memory, others use Bacopa Monnieri, Lions Mane, and Gingko Biloba to gain an edge. While they may not turn you into a genius with superhuman intelligence, even a slight improvement in your memory will yield big results in your business.

Are you tired and stressed from too much work? Then why not try some GABA, Ashwagandha, or 5-HTP, as many entrepreneurs are doing these days. The fact of the matter is that many entrepreneurs are using nootropics to get ahead in the workplace, and if youre not doing so, you may have some fierce competition.

You may or may not have heard of Wim Hof before. If you havent, hes a 58-year-old Dutch man who holds 26 world records for physical feats, one of which is for taking the longest ice bath in the world. Yes, thats rightthis old man was able to spend almost two hours, completely immersed in a bath of ice.

Hes also climbed both Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro while wearing nothing but shorts and a pair of shoes. So, whats the secret to these incredible feats? How does he have such superhuman resistance to cold, despite his age?

He accredits his physical toughness to his Wim Hof Method, which is a series of breathing exercises that flood the brain and body with oxygen. Combined with cold showers, some of the benefits he touts are improved physical performance, reduced anxiety levels, and even improved happiness levels.

While many people are skeptical that simply breathing a different way can yield such incredible benefits, almost everyone who tries his method reports better focus, more productivity, less anxiety, and a whole host of other benefits.

While much has been said about productivity before, most people still waste endless time on menial tasks, like checking emails, browsing social media, and making minor improvements to their business that yield almost no results.

One great concept regarding productivity is based around a book called Focal Point by Brian Tracy. The idea is simple: only focus on the tasks that are going to bring about the most return on your time investment. Despite its simplicity, most people neglect this concept, and focus on low return on investment activities.

The Focal Point System divides tasks into five categories, of descending priority:

An A Task would be something like signing a client onto a $50 million contract, whereas a B Task might be something like going to the gym. Theyre both important, but going to the gym is less impactful on your business.

A C Task would be something along the lines of getting a new client, because even though it may help your business, it isnt necessary if you just get the $50 million contract to begin with. D Tasks and E Tasks are small things, like checking emails, following up on a phone call, or printing out business cards.

Most entrepreneurs focus on the B Tasks, and C Tasks, when they should really be focusing on the A Tasks, and B Tasks. You should aim to either ignore, outsource, or automate everything else, for maximum productivity.

As Steve Jobs once said: People think focus means saying yes to the thing youve got to focus on. But thats not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. This could not be more accurate.

One of the biggest keys to productivity is focusing on the 20 per cent of tasks that are going to bring about 80 per cent of your results (also known as the Pareto Principle). By simply viewing the world through this Focal Point System lens, you can easily save hours of time each day, and get twice as much done in half the time.

Coffee 3 alternatives to coffee that no one is talking about – Ladders

Posted: at 5:05 pm

If youre like me, you probably reach for at least one cup of coffee every day. Its become a natural part of our routines and for many is a morning staple like taking vitamins or eating breakfast. As the busy-oriented lifestyle continues to consume our society, coffee has been positioned as a magical elixir to help us focus and multi-task.

As comedian Jerry Seinfeld once said, We want to do a lot of stuff: were not in great shape. We didnt get a good nights sleep. Were a little depressed. Coffee solves all these problems in one delightful little cup.

What most people dont realize is that there is a whole world of interesting coffee alternatives that can:

For starters, I firmly believe that coffee can be incredibly beneficial if consumed in moderation. In fact, some scientists are even encouraging people to drink more coffee. Coffee drinkers run into trouble when they get into a habit of five plus cups per day or reach for a Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino in the evenings.

But youre probably wondering, What else is even out there?

I was initially introduced to several coffee alternatives like nootropics, adaptogens, and mushrooms after reading through Beyond Coffee, a sustainable guide that breaks down different ingredients and analyzes if they are optimal for productivity, scientifically backed by research, and can act as a realistic source of energy.

Everyones heard that green tea is a great coffee substitute for energy and burning fat, but I want to take it one step further and break down a few possibilities to try that you may not be aware of. The three options mentioned below are all extensively detailed in Beyond Coffee, supplements that I take on either a daily or weekly basis, and have been proven to be effective and, more importantly, considered safe if taken within the FDAs recommended dosage.

So, here are a few interesting coffee alternatives for you to consider that no one is talking about.

1. Omega-3 EPA and DHA

Omega-3s fall under the umbrella of nootropics, a growing category of compounds, pills, and powders advertised for their potential to enhance focus and productivity.

Im sure you come across nootropics on a daily basis and have seen them advertised in your local grocery store. While Nootropics arent new, they have become more popular in recent years with users creating a nootropic stack- combining multiple compounds into a cocktail for heightened results. Nootropics include a variety of supplements that have been well-researched and are widely considered safe like matcha green tea or my recommendation, omega-3s, along with other drugs and commercial products that are less effective and possibly unsafe.

Commonly recognized as fatty acids, omega-3s are often derived from consuming fish like tuna and salmon, or taken in a pill form. While most people use omega-3s for eye health and to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, research also shows that increasing your omega-3s may enhance cognitive performance and improve attention span.

There is even evidence to support that omega-3s can slow or reduce the likelihood of brain degenerative diseases. A study on elderly adults followed for nearly four years discovered that those who ate higher amounts of fish and supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to develop Alzheimers.

Omega-3s are relatively inexpensive and you can take them daily.

2. L-Theanine

L-Theanine is another nootropic that has been well-researched. If youre someone who associates nootropics with smart drugs like the movie Limitless, you may be disappointed to hear that a lot of nootropics are used for their de-stressing agents and anti-inflammatory properties- not an output of hyper intelligence.

L-Theanine is an amino acid found in fungi, plants, and green tea. This is one of the few supplements that I would recommend taking in addition to caffeine to get the most out of it- but this doesnt necessarily have to be coffee.

According to Beyond Coffee, Theanine is thought to have neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects by increasing serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and glycine levels in the brain. There is also evidence suggesting that L-Theanine will improve your mood and can be used for treating high blood pressure. L-Theanine has been classified by the FDA as generally recognized as being safe or GRAS status.

3. Spirulina

I started using spirulina last year as an addition to my morning protein shakes. Spirulina is a blue-green algae rich in protein, B-vitamins, and iron. Just a single tablespoon is packed with plant-based protein and has been recommended for a variety of conditions including high blood pressure, stress, anxiety, and diabetes.

Regarding energy, Vitamin B1 helps regulate your bodys thiamin (which contributes to fatigue) resulting in a more stable maintenance of energy. Coffee alternatives dont necessarily need to be sharp boosts in attentiveness like the energy provided by caffeine. Instead, a supplement like Spirulina can help you hold onto more energy throughout the day- it has even been shown to improve athletic performance by increasing endurance.

Am I imploring you to delete your Starbucks app and throw the company Keurig in the trash?

Not quite but there are other energy alternatives out there that also offer a multitude of healthy benefits. As always, its important to use supplements as they are intended. They should supplement a healthy diet and physical exercise. A spoonful of spirulina in your orange juice wont make a difference if youre running on two hours of sleep and a Big Mac.

Grocery CPG Trends Based on Industry Adoption and Market Strength, from CB Insights – Food Industry Executive

Posted: March 5, 2020 at 7:05 pm

A recent report, Grocery CPG Trends To Watch In 2020, from CB Insights looks at 15 trends across food, beverage, and household essentials.

The trends fall into four categories, based on a combination of industry adoption and market strength:

The report identified five necessary trends.

Traditionally, retailers and other platforms that drive shopper engagement have been intermediaries in CPG companies relationships with consumers. However, in 2019, companies invested significantly to develop one-to-one consumer relationships. A more sophisticated ad tech landscape and more direct-to-consumer plays will enable CPG companies to establish deeper and more informative relationships with customers, states the report.

Per capita milk consumption in the United States went down almost 18% from 2010 to 2018, according to USDA data. Traditional dairy companies, such as Dean Foods and Borden Dairy, have filed for bankruptcy. As a result, plant-based dairy alternatives are set to reach their full market potential in 2020, as companies continue to expand alternative dairy options.

Although researchers are still attempting to understand how the gut microbiome affects health and wellness, food and beverage companies are developing products to target the microbiome. As understanding increases, CB Insights expects more companies to develop personalized nutrition services to help consumers with their diets.

Like most other food trend predictions, CB Insights sees continued growth in plant-based meat. Companies will develop new partnerships, distribution agreements, and production capabilities in 2020.

Startups and changing consumer behavior have forced some leading CPG companies to dramatically speed up the product innovation cycle. As more companies look to accelerate innovation cycles, these techniques will help companies more precisely tailor new products to individual markets, including localizing new innovations within emerging markets, states the report.

The report identified five experimental trends.

Blockchain and AI technology are helping companies address the challenge of traceability. However, moving large network supply chains to a new technological infrastructure will require more time and investment.

Developing dehydrated products is a way to reduce the cost of shipping. This cost limits e-commerce profits for many CPG companies. However, the compact nature of dehydrated products means differentiated in-store merchandising is difficult, making the products primarily valuable for e-commerce channels.

Even with all the interest in cannabis, food and beverage companies still face uncertain regulations.

The increase in human-grade pet foods will accelerate in 2020, given Increased spending on pets, declining birth rates, and premiumization trends.

Lab-grown meats are not yet commercially available, primarily due to high costs. However, recently-funded startups are working on new technology to scale production.

The report identified four threatening trends.

Nootropics and adaptogens are emerging as the go-to ingredients for everything wellness, according to the report. Products containing these ingredients can potentially take market share from traditional CPG categories. However, companies will need to prove the effectiveness of their product to attract consumers.

With all the sustainability concerns, selling models based on reusable packaging will increase.

The implementation of IoT-connected products and brand services for consumers will increase with the rollout of 5G.

Although theres interest in tech-enabled vending machines, most are still in the proof-of-concept stage.

The report identified only one transitory trend.

The healthy beverage trend is maturing. An increasingly crowded and competitive enhanced water market could stall growth. Also, more sustainable packaged-water alternatives, such as carboned at-home hydration systems, could lead to new consumption patterns and affect how enhanced water products are manufactured, packaged, and sold.
