LVSportsBiz.com chatted with Aces General Manager Natalie Williams and head coach Becky Hammon and they sized up the Connecticut Sun vs Aces Finals as a classic brawn/physical team vs finesse/fast team.

Its going to be physical, Williams said.

Noted Hammon: We know this is a clash of styles.

Hammon said the Aces schemed for Seattles personnel like star Breanna Stewart but against the Sun a team with six players who can drop 20 points a game on you the strategy will be to scheme against a concept because the Sun have such a balanced attack.

The Aces red-hot shooting Chelsea Gray said Connecticut wants to beat you up. She said the key is to match the Suns defensive intensity and protect the paint.

She mentioned shes trying to keep her shooting touch hot by remaining super calm and composed.

Gray also noted that the one slight change to her shooting technique is that she has a quicker release.

No Bad Blood Between the Raiders and Chargers LB Khalil Mack – Sports Illustrated

Posted: at 1:26 pm

Theres always bad blood after a bad breakup, and NFL players and organizations are no exception.

This was the case for the Las Vegas Raiders and now, Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack.

The Raiders drafted Mack with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and after four years with the organization he was traded to the Chicago Bears.

In his tenure with the Bears, Mack had the opportunity to have two revenge games against his former team, and finished splitting the record (1-1).

During the two games against the Raiders, Mack has 10 solo tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.

But that build up against his former team doesn't feel quite the same as it did when they met back in 2019 and 2021.

"I mean the people that I didn't like probably aren't there anymore... I'll always have respect for the organization, said Mack on facing the Raiders.

Mack did continue to have a close friendship with Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who he respects as a player, but that is not going to stop him from a little friendly fire when they line up across from one another on Sunday.

Scroll to Continue

"That's my brother,"said Mack of Carr. "I like to talk trash here and there. I feel like that's a bond that can't be broken when it comes to that, but come Sunday it's on and poppin'. ... He's an ultimate competitor. One of the best in the game. Somebody that I highly respect when it comes to the leadership aspect, as well as the quarterback position."

Carr will not be backing down on Sunday and will return the favor to Mack, when they face each other in their season opener.

"I mean, Khalil [Mack], I've always said he's a Hall-of-Fame player. Playing alongside Joey [Bosa], who I think is one of the best players in all of football. I really respect the way that they both play the game, and the way that they go about their business. Khalil, he's always been one of my best friends, and we always talk, it seems like every other week, except when we play each other, said Carr.

"It's not like, 'Hey, I'm not talking to you this week.' We just don't. I'll see him, I'll talk to him after the game. I'll definitely talk to him during the game, as I always do. He's one of my best friends, so just getting to play against him is cool for me. It's cool for my boys, they know him, and so they'll be watching him and all that stuff. But past that, he's a Hall of Fame-type player. Him and Joey are great rushers in this league and have been for a long time. So, we have our work cut out for us."

With so much hype coming into this game, the bad blood between the Raiders and Mack has cooled down quite a lot.

The Raiders open up their season later today against Mack and the Chargers at SoFi Stadium at 1:25 pm PT.

Raiders Send Three Players to IR, and Waive Two Ahead of Roster Cuts – Sports Illustrated

Posted: August 29, 2022 at 8:23 am

The decision to make up the 53-man roster has already begun for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Two days after winning their preseason finale against the New England Patriots, the Raiders started working on trimming down their roster.

Unfortunately, the team had a bit of help from players going down by injury.

The Silver and Black announced on Sunday, they are placing defensive tackle Tyler Lancaster, tackle Brandon Parker and linebacker Tae Davis to the Reserve/Injured List.

The veteran tackle is a huge loss for the Raiders, who has been competing during the offseason with second-year player Alex Leatherwood for the starting right tackle position.

But since the Raiders opening win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Hall of Fame game, Parker hadnt practiced and it was unclear whether he had suffered an injury or not.

It is clear now that hell now miss the entire season with a tricep injury.

Lancaster, who signed with the Raiders this offseason from the Green Bay Packers, was expected to compete for a rotational spot in the interior of the defensive line.

It appeared to sustain an injury in the fourth-quarter of Fridays game against the Patriots.

Davis, who recently signed with the Raiders, is also going to IR. The former Houston Texan spent the 2021 season on injured reserve.

Scroll to Continue

This preseason was the first time Davis saw some action, since his time in Cleveland in 2020, where he appeared in 13 games, mostly playing on special teams.

For these Raiders to be eligible to return from IR, they would have been placed after the 53-man roster cutdown, unfortunately these players placed on IR will be out for the whole season.

The team also announced tight end Nick Bowers and wide receiver Justin Hall have been waived.

Bowers, a special teamer, did not get much action during the preseason and after falling behind in the depth chart, his time in the roster comes to a close.

Hall, an undrafted free agent from Ball State was considered to be a swiss-army-knife, Mr. Do-It-All, but along with Bowers, he was outshined by others and started to fall back in the roster.

The Raiders may sign them both on the practice squad if they clear waivers.

As of Sunday, the Raiders roster sits at 75 players.

Ahead of Tuesday's deadline to make all of their cuts and reveal the teams 53-man roster.

Flames engulf vacant building west of I-15 in Las Vegas – KTNV 13 Action News Las Vegas

Posted: at 8:23 am

LAS VEGAS (KTNV)KTNV is on the scene of a large fire that broke out in an industrial area west of Interstate 15 in Las Vegas on Tuesday morning.

At approximately 8:10 a.m., Clark County Fire department responded to a call regarding a building fire at 3613 Procyon Street, near Valley View Boulevard and Twain Avenue.

While en route to the fire, dispatchers noted that there have been several fires at this address and that there was some structural instability. The first arriving unit found heavy smoke coming from the Procyon side of the building. Additionally, firefighters say that 90 percent of the roof had fallen and the second-floor landing was structurally unstable.

Fire crews surrounded the building on the outside and set up the truck for an aerial master stream, which extinguished the fire.

Firefighters also noted that primary and secondary life searches have not been completed in the interior because of the structural instability.

At this time, the cause is undetermined and damages have not been estimated. However, area business owners told reporter Alyssa Bethencourt that the building is vacant and was recently occupied by squatters.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area of Spring Mountain Road and Procyon Street, according to the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.

This is a developing story. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

Las Vegas Aces’ Becky Hammon named 2022 WNBA Coach of the Year – ESPN

Posted: at 8:23 am

Aug 26, 2022

Alexa PhilippouESPN

The Las Vegas Aces' Becky Hammon was named 2022 WNBA Coach of the Year, the league announced Friday, making her the first former WNBA player to win the award in her debut season as head coach.

Hammon earned 27 of 56 votes from a panel of sports media members, while the Atlanta Dream's Tanisha Wright -- another former WNBA player-turned-coach -- came in second with 18. The Chicago Sky's James Wade received eight, while Dallas' Vickie Johnson, Phoenix's Vanessa Nygaard and Washington's Mike Thibault each collected one.

Hammon becomes the seventh coach in WNBA history to take home Coach of the Year honors in their first season.

The No. 1-seeded Aces, whom Hammon guided to a 26-10 regular-season finish, will take on the fourth-seeded Seattle Storm in a best-of-five semifinal series beginning Sunday. The Aces' regular-season winning percentage (.722) is the second-highest winning percentage ever for a rookie head coach.

Las Vegas is hoping to earn a franchise-first WNBA title after advancing to at least the semifinals each of the previous three years under Bill Laimbeer. If the Aces win the title, Hammon would become the first first-year head coach to get a WNBA championship since Van Chancellor did it with the Houston Comets in the league's inaugural season in 1997.

Following the departure of Laimbeer this past offseason, Hammon came in eager to implement a pace-and-space, read-heavy offense featuring a barrage of 3-pointers, a far cry from Laimbeer's more old-school approach predicated on getting the ball into the post. The Aces thrived under the new style: Hammon's 9-1 start to the regular season signified the best 10-game beginning to a head-coaching career in league history, and the team's .722 regular-season winning percentage is the third best in franchise history. Hammon also guided the Aces to winning the second annual Commissioner's Cup championship game last month, 93-83 over Chicago, while also leading Team Wilson to victory in the 2022 All-Star Game.

Along the way, Vegas' new offense has broken a slew of WNBA records: It hit the most 3s in any game last week with 23 in the first-round playoff matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, and its 90.4 points per game marked the third-highest scoring average in league history, and the highest since 2010.

Hammon's starting five -- A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray and former reserves Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby -- emerged as one of the most lethal lineups in the league. Four of the five were named All-Stars earlier this season, including MVP candidate Wilson, Most Improved prospect Young and expected all-WNBA selection Plum, while Gray got her due when named MVP of the Commissioner's Cup championship game.

Hammon's storied WNBA playing career spanned 16 seasons, including eight with the San Antonio Silver Stars, the precursor to the Aces prior to the franchise's move. She was recently named one of the 25 greatest players in league history. After her playing career concluded, Hammon served eight seasons as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, with whom she became the first full-time female assistant in NBA history.
