‘The Old Guard’ Sequel is Happening! Here’s What We Know So Far – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: September 8, 2021 at 10:16 am

Netflixs widely appreciated movie The Old Guard is getting a sequel. The movie came out last year to much critical and popular appreciation during the pandemic. With Charlize Theron as a producer and lead in the cast, the movie was hailed for its unique portrayal of superheroes in film. Based on comics of the same name, the movie is now getting a sequel.

The Old Guard talks about centuries-old, immortal mercenaries who have helped humanity through the ages and in different parts of the world. Trying to conceal their immortality, the group has a rule of never taking assignments from the same people. Once they break their rule to help a group of kidnapped girls, their identity is threatened to be revealed by a CIA agent James Copley, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Along with this, the discovery that there is another one of them an immortal whose regenerative abilities have taken the American military by surprise, once again, threatens their hidden identities. The four members of the group, Andy, played by Theron, Booker, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, Nicky, played by Luca Marinelli, and Joe played by Marwan Kenzari, then set out for their dual mission. They seek to bring their new member, Nile, played by Kiki Layne, to safety and stop Copley from revealing their true identities to others.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the movie was recognized for its stunt and action sequences along with Therons performance. The talks of a sequel began almost as soon as the movie first debuted on Netflix and a sequel was reportedly given way earlier this year. But an official announcement recently came in, Deadline reported.

First things first, the cast of the first movie, including Theron, is said to reprise their roles in the sequel. Theron will once again be on board as a producer as well. In an article in Variety, Theron was quoted as saying the script of the movie was done and that the movie would begin shooting in 2022.

One change, however, that the recent Netflix and Skydance announcement noted in the sequel was directorial. Prince-Bythewood, who received many praises for her direction and nuanced eye for the superhero genre, is not directing the sequel. Though she stays on board as a producer on the movie.

I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre, Prince-Bythewood said.

The producers though are not worried about it as they have brought in Victoria Mahoney, the second unit director to J.J.Abrams in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, to direct the movie.

Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill, and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard, Mahoney said. I mustve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses.

Both Prince-Bythewood and Theron are also excited to have Mahoney direct the film. We are beyond thrilled that Vic[Mahoney] is joining The Old Guard team, Theron and other producers on the movie said. Her passion for these characters and her ambitious vision for the movie overwhelmed us all. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with her.

The sequel, like the first movie, will be based on the graphic novel of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. Rucka had already released a sequel to his graphic novel in 2019, which was called The Old Guard: Multiplied.

Although more details about the story of the sequel have not been released, Rucka has, reportedly, written the movie with David Ellison and Dana Goldberg.

And if Theron is to be believed, the movie will go into production in 2022 and should be expected to release some time after.

Elliott: Serena Williams’ coach on recovery from her latest injury: ‘It’s going to work out’ – Yahoo News

Posted: at 12:01 pm

Serena Williams plays a return during a match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon in June. Williams will not compete in the U.S. Open because of a hamstring injury. (Kristy Wigglesworth / Associated Press)

In the end, it wont really matter if Serena Williams wins another Grand Slam singles title and matches Margaret Courts recognized record of 24.

Williams, who spent part of her childhood playing on public tennis courts in Compton alongside her sister Venus, has won so many championships so decisively and on so many surfaces that her superiority is beyond dispute. Shes chasing a number, not immortality. She earned immortality long ago, when her power game allowed her to dominate the court and redefine what womens tennis could be.

The same drive that propelled her to the pinnacle of the sport has kept her going when her body balks under stress and strain, as it has done with sadly increasing frequency.

A hamstring injury she suffered at Wimbledon led her to withdraw from the U.S. Open, which will begin Monday in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Her thigh was heavily taped during the French Open, where she lost in the round of 16, and she had to retire during the first set of her first-round match at Wimbledon after slipping and injuring her hamstring. It has become a familiar and frustrating refrain for Williams, who will turn 40 on Sept. 26.

Its been a tough year because out of the four Grand Slams, shes been able to play only the Australian Open, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou said in a phone interview. First of all, shes sad because its a Grand Slam, and second its the home Grand Slam. So, two main reasons for being sad.

For a long while, Williams did well at fending off times inevitable toll. She pulled off a near miracle to reach the finals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2018, and again in 2019 after enduring a perilous 2017 pregnancy that was complicated by a caesarean section and blood clots. She reached the semifinals of the Australian Open this year, where she lost to eventual champion Naomi Osaka.

But then came the injuries and the uncertainty over when she will return, much less whether she can return to top form. Its no consolation, but shes not alone in facing medical issues that have limited her match play: Roger Federer, newly 40, said two weeks ago he would need a third surgery on his right knee and will be out of tennis for many months. Rafael Nadal, a relatively spritely 35, withdrew from the U.S. Open because of a chronic foot problem.

Story continues

Without them, the bright lights of New York will be undeniably dimmer. Each time they play is an occasion to be celebrated. Each time they withdraw or retire is a wish unfulfilled.

Hopefully she goes out on her terms, retired tennis star John McEnroe, now an ESPN commentator, said during a conference call held before Williams' withdrawal from the Open. Either way, she's the greatest female player in my book that has ever played, one of the greatest athletes, period, that's ever played. I don't think she's got to worry about whether she wins another one. But I'm sure that she would love to be able to do that, if possible.

Mouratoglou said the calendar didnt allow Williams enough time to heal and prepare for the Open after she slightly tore her hamstring at Wimbledon, and a setback cost her two additional weeks of recovery time. They were reluctant to push her for fear of doing long-term damage.

Serena Williams waves as she leaves the court after retiring from the women's singles first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon in London on June 29. (Kirsty Wigglesworth / Associated Press)

He says he believes shes best left alone for now to adjust to missing the Open and accepting that her body will no longer obey her commands. First of all, it is going to work out. We know its just a question of weeks, he said. We know also that if the U.S. Open would take place maybe three weeks later, she would be ready. So its just a question of time, so no particular stress there.

The only question is whats next, and in order to answer that question I think its important to digest what just happened because its still a big shock and a disappointment for her, and we decided that well take a bit of time and within the next month, we will sit down again and discuss about the future.

That could put the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, which was rescheduled for Oct. 4-17, on her radar. For the moment all the options are possible, Mouratoglou said. We have to just know what are the goals for the future and then, when we know what the goals are, we can go with a plan. Without a goal we cannot make a plan.

He acknowledged that he didnt ask her if those goals include returning to elite level play. Again, we didnt speak about it, so its difficult for me to answer that question, he said. We didnt discuss it because we had a plan, and that was to play this U.S. Open, and we were focusing on that. And then we just discussed playing it or not and we took the decision.

And again, you know, to think about the future, whether its with or without tennis, I dont know, she needs to again digest and take some distance with tennis to think right. She needs that time. She will get that time, and then well talk.

McEnroe, who retired from tour singles play at 33, marveled at Williams longevity but wondered if she has experienced the duress he felt late in his career. I noticed at least with myself that the older I got in a way I felt more pressure and felt like my days were numbered. It ended up, like, hurting me as opposed to that experience you can use to your advantage, he said.

It seems that that wasn't an issue until maybe Serena came back from having her child, maybe sensing she wasn't going to have a lot of opportunities. Even though she's had four [Slam final berths], she wasn't able to play to the level that she normally plays at. Why that was, that's difficult to say.

Given the depth on the womens tour which is loaded with players who consider her an idol its difficult to imagine Williams will win another Slam singles title. All good fortune to her while she chases her dreams, but she should know she doesnt have to chase a record to be considered the greatest in the game. Shes already there, proudly, fiercely, immovably.

Review: ‘Shang-Chi’ is another shrink-wrapped Disney product – AZ Big Media

Posted: at 12:01 pm

You are a product of all who came before you, a wise woman tells Shang-Chi in the movies trailer, and she doesnt know how right she is: Shang-Chi is another shrink-wrapped Disney product, and it could only exist after a busload of white superheroes got their turn first. On the outside, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a Marvel-tinged ode to wuxia, the enduring Chinese subgenre of martial arts fantasybut on the inside, its just another compromise between underrepresented talent and overpaid producers.

The closest Shang-Chi gets to the movies its pretending to honor is the casting of Tony Leung, frequent muse of Wong Kar-wai and one of the greatest actors alive. He plays Wenwu, otherwise known as the Mandarinno, not Iron Man 3s fakeout villain, the real one this timean immortal warlord whos spent thousands of years conquering everything he pleases. He gains his immortality from ten magical rings that he wears like bracelets, a fact he doesnt seem to mind sharing with the world, given that he names his army the Ten Rings. Eventually, he has a sonShang-Chi himselfwho he trains to take his place, but Shang-Chi elects to abscond to the U.S. and live the American dream: working as a valet with Awkwafina.

The film introduces us to Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) at this stage in his life. Hes happy shooting the breeze with his best friend Katy (Awkwafina), but their lives are thrown into chaos when the Ten Rings comes looking for Shang-Chi, and Katy refuses to leave his side. Their journey kicks off with a crackerjack action sequence on a moving bus, where both Katy and the audience get to see Shang-Chis martial arts prowess for the first time. Simu Liu, who worked as a stuntman before finding success as an actor, brings real, physical weight to the action, throwing his body around with visible but practiced exertion. The fighting is impressive in general, thanks in part to the choreography of Brad Allen, a veteran Jackie Chan choreographer who died weeks before Shang-Chis release. His work features plenty of clever moves thatll ingrain themselves firmly in the popular imagination. The camera does its best to capture it all, swiveling around the action on a pre-visualized path, but Shang-Chi never comes close to the intricately edited action of authentic wuxia films. The cinematographer and editors are a little out of their depth here, which is clearer than ever when they slot into their comfort zones for a third-act CGI slugfest. The more planning an action scene requires, the less creative itll be.

The action descends into Marvels business-as-usual as the film progresses, but the screenplay is choked up in a suit and tie from the start. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is as lazily written as these things get. The worst offender is the protagonists case of Captain Marvel syndrome: he doesnt have a real arc. From the moment we meet Shang-Chi, hes a Chosen One with a heart of gold, having chosen to leave his vices behind before the story even started. His path to heroism is a mere matter of being The Guy at The Right Time. The screenplayonce again overfocused on the retrieval of conflict-solving artifactsis replete with decisions that rob us of chances to get to know the characters better. Wenwu gets an effective, small-scale rationale for his villainy, but Shang-Chi and Katy are stock characters from head to toe. This is another adventure of the (initially) reluctant hero and his plucky comic relief. And they definitely dont have feelings for each other.

The most distinctive element of Shang-Chi is its score. Director Daniel Cretton made the shrewd choice to collaborate with composer Joel P. West, who scored Crettons infinitely smaller (and highly recommended) debut, Short Term 12. The result is a score that, like Short Term 12s, buries deeper into a single motif over time, rejecting epic bombast in favor of subtle melodic developments. Its beautiful, and it makes you wish the rest of the film followed suit. The Asian myths that Shang-Chi draws from have incredible storytelling potential. But Disney doesnt really draw from myths; it literalizes them, flattening bits and pieces into command-findable lore for their latest property. Marvel Studios doesnt have a sense of the reciprocal interplay between myth and culture. It does, however, know how to appropriate cultures to build its own. The cast and crew of Shang-Chi might have put genuine care into the movie, but the business directive of expanding the Marvel kingdom is the supreme creative force.

Summary

Immortality is the ability to simply not die by natural means for any number of reasons, ranging from simply having no limit to your lifespan, being able to regenerate from wounds that would normally be lethal, or being protected by a higher being, among other possible reasons. It should be noted that no Immortality is truly perfect, and no matter how much a character's immortality is hyped up within their own setting, it is very, very unlikely that they are truly completely unkillable when matched up against characters from other fictions.

1: Eternal Life: Characters gifted with this type of immortality cannot die from natural causes, such as old age or conventional illness, but can be killed by unnatural causes. To clarify, this type of immortality can include both those who do not age at all, and those who still grow old, but will never die of old age. However, in the case of the latter it should be made clear that this is not justLongevity, ascharacters with that ability will eventually die of old age, as opposed to Eternal Life, for which dying of old age is not possible.

2: Resilient Immortality: Characters with this degree of immortality can indefinitely survive injuries that would otherwise be lethal to a normal person, without needing to heal. This type of immortality can have different levels of effectiveness and can be bypassed, for example, by causing extremely severe wounds or the complete destruction of the body or specific parts of it, such as the head, etc.

3: Immortality via regeneration: Characters with this type of immortality can simply regenerate from wounds that would normally be lethal, though its effectiveness depends on the degree of the regeneration.

4: Immortality via reincarnation or resurrection: Characters that are immortal because, whenever they die, they will simply reincarnate within another body or resurrect themselves at a later point in time.

5: Deathless Immortality: Characters who exist unbound by conventional life or death, or do not exist at all, and thus cannot be traditionally killed. Typically, abilities such asExistence Erasureare needed to destroy them.

6: Parasitic: The character is able to attain a sort of immortality by abandoning bodies whenever necessary to transfer their consciousness to another body, whether they are possessing someone else or switching to a backup body.

7: Undead: Characters who cannot die due to technically being already dead, often overlapping with other forms of immortality.

8: Reliant Immortality: The character gets benefited by 1 or more other types of Immortality as long as a certain being, object, place and/or concept or more may grant them those benefits, losing them otherwise. What exactly a user is reliant over, the benefits given from it, and how the process of the ability operates must be explained. Simply having some weakness that will kill a character when exploited doesn't qualify if it doesn't grant a form of Immortality, and also having other powers that do grant Immortality but are unrelated to that weakness does not count as well. It is discouraged to list this type if it would be redundant due to the same power already being described in another ability of the profile.

9: Transcendental Immortality: Characters whose true selves exist independently from the plane where they can be killed.

Is immortality possible? Can we cheat our death? – What’s …

Posted: at 10:10 am

Nothing is certain as death. Everything has come into existence will have to leave this universe. Not only aging but many other factors are involved which will vanish our existence someday. But then we come across a question, Is immortality possible? And what exactly Immortality is?

Lets first understand what exactly immortality is? Immortality means indefinite & continuous living of a person. Immortality doesnt mean that an individual cant die from disease or any physical injury. But we relate it with slowing down or stopping the process of aging.

But can we become immortal? The answer is Yes and No both. Yes because Scientists have found the core problem of aging but the objective is really very complex to achieve. Here we are talking about biological immortality.

Although, there are very high chances that in the coming decades they may develop an anti-aging treatment. Well, we will discuss this topic later in the article. First, lets have a look at some alternative ways has a high probability to be available before biological immortality.

Nanotechnology comes in the worlds most popular developing technology nowadays. As it has a vast no. of applications in a vast number of fields. & so has in human immortality. From the last few years, scientists are researching and developing nano-robots or Nanobots using nanotechnology.

These kinds of robots will flow in our bloodstream inside our bodies. These nanobots would be like artificial blood components. They will help in maintaining our bodies by either removing or destroying harmful bacteria, Viruses, Dead or old cells.

They can also be used for treatment because these bots are small and can go anywhere in our body so they can carry cures at specific or target destinations which will only affect a small area of our body.

In the same direction recently scientists have developed a programmable living organism and named it Xenobot. This Xenobot has so many applications and even has no side effects on the human body.

Read:- Scientists has created Living robot, xenobot

Researchers of Xenobot have claimed that this programmable living robot may the game-changer in the medical field. And can even increase the human lifespan period.

Uploading human brain in a computer This concept seems like science fiction. But this is the only technology that has the highest probability of accomplishing in less than a decade.

The human brain is like a huge biological CPU that has a huge amount of storage. Therefore if we could find a way to synchronize the human biological brain with todays modern computer then we could easily achieve digital immortality.

Biological immortality has more advantages then any other technology as this can make us immortal forever and can also give an extraordinary mind capable of solving the most complex problems.

And if we talk about the greatest advantage then, you can change your body as many times as you want. Just you need to do is, upload your mind in a new body.

This good looking technology has so many advantages because now humanity can reach a new extent by preserving great peoples minds. But it might serve as a weapon too if got into the hands of a terrorist minded.

Many companies including some top universities like MIT is working on this project to make humans immortal by uploading their minds.

Saving human life by replacing old not working organs is not a new technology and doctors are using this for many decades. Doctors and researchers have been able to grow working organs like skins, ears, trachea, bones, etc.

According to an estimated report provided by WHO about 31% of people in the world die with CVDs or Cardiovascular disease every year. So if scientists could clone heart and replace it with older then we can extend peoples life further.

Cryonics is the process which involves cooling a person in the liquid nitrogen and freezing in order to keep the body preserved indefinitely. It is because when a body is frizzed at a very low-temperature physical decay actually stops. And in the future, scientific procedures revive them and restore them to good health.

This concept was first proposed by Robert Ettinger in 1962. This producer has not been tested on living peoples yet. But scientists have tested this on dogs and monkeys (near 0 degree Celsius) and successfully revived them.

But this complete process has been executed on nematodes(-196 degree Celsius) and successfully revived them. Not only this but there are many other success stories. Well, we havent achieved the level where we can freeze living humans but who knows the future?

Finally, biological immortality should be out the main goal. And to achieve biological immortality we need to reverse the process of cell aging called Senescence. There is an inbuilt tendency of cells that they lose their ability to replicate and function properly over time.

But what doctors recommend doing is having a good diet, exercise, and live in an open environment to increase the lifespan period. But we all know this method is very typical and everybody doesnt have time.

Therefore the doctors and researchers are trying to reverse engineer that process on the molecular level. And they have found a very safe first molecule Resveratrol that can increase the lifespan by activating a group enzyme that seems to give benefits of controlling exercising and a good diet.

This has been successfully tested on rats and nematodes and the results were amazing. And also may work on humans. But our goal is to live forever not 4 or 5 years extra than the average life period.

Therefore we need to find a drug or molecule that can increase the length of telomeres. Because every time cells replicate telomeres present on the end of chromosomes get shorten as result cells start losing their ability to replicate further. And this why we age.

But over the past few years, researchers have developed some molecule that restores the length of telomeres but that also caused some serious problems like uncontrolled cell division or cancer in simple language. Therefore we need to keep searching for some good treatment. Until then we have Resveratrol. & other alternative ways.

The dream of living forever looks great but this dream is am illusion like every dream. There are some limitations that dont allow us to live forever even if we were super advance in technology or become a galactic civilization.

Lets understand this with an example, A long time todays largest desert Sahara was a sea and many sea organisms were living inside that sea. But around 7 million years ago it completely turned into a desert because of some catastrophic phenomena. And all the organisms inside the sea died without any reason.

Similarly, humans are living in-universe and according to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, the universe wont last forever. Yes, the time it would take to happen is billions and billions of years from now and this seems like forever in our imagination, but one day everything will vanish. And who knows whether humanity could survive until then? or it would destroy in World War 3?

Read:- What if World War 3 takes place? Our last mistake?

And there is a very beautiful explanation of not living forever about the logic of evolution! Nature made immortal genes but mortal bodies from our ancestors. It is because the resources are better allocated between our future generations than b/w thousand and hundred thousand years old peoples. We die so others may live.

Immortality – The RuneScape Wiki

Posted: at 10:10 am

Immortality is an ultimate Defence ability that requires a shield to use. When activated, melee, magic, ranged, and soft typeless damage the user receives is reduced by 25% for 30 seconds. If the user dies while the ability is in effect, they are returned to life, immediately cancelling Immortality. Immortality has a 30 second timer on the Buffs and debuffs bar.

When active, the ability essentially acts as a diminished variant of Reflect; it provides half the damage reduction of reflect and does not reflect said damage onto the aggressor(s). Unlike most other defensive abilities requiring a shield, Immortality's effect is consistent throughout all tiers of shields and defenders.

When the player is killed while under the effects of Immortality, a message will appear in the game box stating In a heroic stand you get a second wind! as the player is knocked down, but a blue hand lifts them back up. This will also recover 40% of the player's maximum health and provide a two second damage immunity from incoming attacks. Like signs and portents of life/death however, the player is temporarily bound due to the animation playing out. In PvP situations, this will also remove any Teleport Block effect that the player might have had.

Some bosses' mechanics ignore Immortality's effects:

Absolute ImmortalityPower/Ability to:

Be absolutely eternal and imperishable.

The power to be absolutely eternal and imperishable. Sub-power of Omnipotence. Absolute version of Immortality. Combination of Eternal Soul, Mental Continuation and Unfettered Body. Not to be confused with Absolute Invulnerability and Meta Erasure Immunity.

The users are absolutely immortal, and cannot die, age, get sick, be permanently wounded, are absolutely self-sustained and, as their mind and soul are as immortal as their biological bodies, they are immune to mental/spiritual damage. Any injuries the user suffers will immediately heal, even if the user's body is blown up, disintegrated or completely destroyed to the sub-atomic level and even if the user is completely erased, they will still return to life. Alternately, some users are absolutely immune to all harm, and can never die from any natural causes. Either way, they are inerasable and are unaffected by time manipulation of any level. The users completely transcend the concept of death itself, though many users transcend both the concepts of life and death.

The user's existence and soul become completely free and independent of even the concept of reality, making them unbound to the subjects of life, death, and manipulations. The user's existence is eternal to the point that they would not only continue to exist even after the end of time and all of existence, but would also remain completely unaffected and unchanged by it, essentially outliving time itself and everything else. Also, the power cannot be removed, erased, destroyed and manipulated by any means. Overall, only truly Omnipotent/Metapotent beings can kill the user or even affect their immortality. In some cases the user's existence can overpower almighty laws (though this would only apply to the highest of Supreme Beings), thus rendering their immortality truly perfect and absolute in every sense.

Immortal Future Zamasu unfazed by an energy blade piercing through him.

Immortality (, Fushi), also called Eternal Life (, Eien no Inochi), is the concept of living in physical or spiritual form for an infinite length of time without dying. A subset of this is Eternal Youth (, Eien no Wakasa), which allows for exemption from natural death such as from old age or disease, as well as halting age altogether.

In the manga, those who areimmortal are also immune to the effects of Hakai. There are several outside methods in the series which can be sought after in order to become immortal, the most common being to make such a wish to the Eternal Dragons, Shenron or Porunga, using the seven Dragon Balls.

Even if one is immortal they are still susceptible to being trapped in a place where they cannot escape, be it a different time era, dimension, etc. They are also susceptible when fusing with a mortal being due to merging in a cellular level with said being. This could result in major problems, varying in each person, due to merging their cells with mortal cells. This would either overwrite the fused body's DNA, or treat the merged cell as a one single cell, both resulting in catastrophic mutations. In Dragon Ball Super, it appears that they're also susceptible to being erased from existence by Zeno, while in Dragon Ball Heroes this appears to be untrue, as Fused Zamasu is implied to have regenerated from Future Zeno erasing him. It is also possible the Angels may be capable to do the same as well. In the case of gaining eternal youth, they also are still susceptible to the unnatural taking of life such as murder or suicide. There are examples of these drawbacks such as:

It should also be noted that immortality from death can make a person extremely overconfident due to no longer having to fear death and believe that they can overcome any mortal enemy as they cannot be killed, even if said enemy is stronger than them, as shown by both Garlic Jr. and Future Zamasu. In the case with Garlic Jr. his overconfidence caused him to use the Dead Zone twice against his enemies in an attempt to defeat them only for him to be defeated by Gohan both times and sealed in the very Dead Zone he created. While Future Zamasu was more cautious with dealing with potential threats to his and Goku Black's Zero Mortals Plan even with his immortality, he was still overconfident thanks to his immortality at least until he was almost sealed away by the Evil Containment Wave, which caused him to resort to Potara Fusion with Goku Black to defeat his enemies, however in the anime this would prove to be their undoing as the fusion was unstable due to Goku Black being mortal, allowing Fused Zamasu's body to be killed by Future Trunks and his immortal essence was erased by Future Zeno.

Frieza himself would later decide against seeking eternal life following his second revival as his time in hell made him realize the folly of living forever and decided to focus on fulfilling his desire to be taller in his True and Golden forms due to being sensitive about his height. Others such as Piccolo and Kami have also noted that seeking immortality is a unwise as the inability to die can be a curse instead of a blessing as life itself could become their only living Hell. Goku also notes acquiring it is pointless if the person who acquires it lacks strength as they would be unable to defeat a stronger opponent who could easily defeat them (afterwards they could seal, imprison, or incapacitate them in some form). Goku Black later expressed a similar sentiment to that of Goku when Future Zamasu suggested making him immortal.

It is hypothesized by some that an immortal would be unable to regenerate from complete physical annihilation, as in the manga Vegito believes that his Final Kamehameha might possess enough power to accomplish this against Fused Zamasu, while in the anime Fused Zamasu was not able to regenerate his body after it was obliterated by the Sword of Hope and so he took on an incorporeal form. Daizenshuu 2 states that Majin Buu has an immortal body, it is shown however that he can be killed when he is obliterated by Goku's Super Spirit Bomb. In a what-if scenario in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, the Spirit Bomb is also capable of killing the immortal Frieza.

Investigations into the biology, philosophy, and theology of immortality research

In the Greek myth of Tithonus, the goddess of the dawn falls in love with a Trojan prince and asks Zeus to render him immortal so that the lovers could spend eternity together. However, she neglects to request that Tithonus be granted eternal youth in addition to eternal life. As a result, the immortal Tithonus suffers from the painful decay and degradation of his body over time, eventually shriveling down into a cricket.

The prospect of living forever has fascinated human beings for millennia, but it is not a concept without its challenges: the physical body breaks down, the soul is mysterious, and the prospect of infinite time raise philosophical puzzles about what it would be like to exist eternally and whether it would even be pleasant to do so.

Questions of the plausibility, nature, desirability and implications of various possible versions of immortality were at the forefront of the recently completed Immortality Project, a three-year, $5.1 million research initiative headed by University of California, Riverside philosopher John Martin Fischer and funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Using a competitive international evaluation system, the project funded 34 projects related to scientific, philosophical, and theological questions that touch on immortality, enabling the production of books and articles by scientists and humanists, popular writings, documentary films, and even works of science fiction. As a follow-up to the project, the Templeton Foundation recently commissioned a research review summarizing the current state of thinking on the scientific, philosophical, and theological intricacies of immortality, showing where the Immortality Project has moved the discussion forward and highlighting areas ripe for future work.

Much of the Immortality Projects research addresses the chances of technological or medical breakthroughs that might greatly extend human lifespan and investigating non-human species that have atypical lifespans or aging. This research is directly relevant to the physiological or staying alive conception of immortality. Project grantee Jon Cohen published Deathdefying experiments, an article in Science cataloguing recent experiments in non-human species, including cases where mice and insects have achieved impressive ages. One particular mouse, GHR-KO 11C, lived nearly five years (about twice the normal mouse lifespan) thanks to the removal of a gene for a growth hormone receptor. Other insects and worms, such as the Caenorhabditis elegans, can have extended lives because of gene mutations. The biological champion of non-aging is the freshwater hydra, Hydra vulgaris, a tiny relative of corals and jellyfish that is the only species that doesnt seem to age. In one case hydras were observed for ten years without signs of decay. Such studies suggest how anti-aging technologies might be developed for humans, although the journey from a hydra to a human would likely be a long one.

Other grants under the Immortality Project looked at the scientific evidence stemming from near-death and out-of-body experiences and what it tells us both about the possibility that human existence might continue independent of our physical bodies and about the psychological importance of near-death experiences. Under the grant, physician Sam Parnia published the book-length Erasing Death, focusing on the biology of near-death experiences in specific patients, and ending with a call for greater investment in resuscitation science.

In a separate book, Near Death Experiences: Understanding Visions of the Afterlife, Fischer and Immortality Project postdoc Benjamin Mitchell-Yellin examine how supernaturalists have used near death experiences to bolster their arguments, although the authors conclude that such experiences do not provide particularly strong evidence that an immaterial soul that can become immortal.

Why is the idea of immortality so fascinating across so many human cultures? One common explanation for the prevalence of belief in some form of immortality is that it offers an alternative to the existential terror engendered by contemplating potential non-existence after death for ourselves or other people. Several grantees under the project took up the contention of the Epicurean philosopher Lucretius that it is no more rational to worry about ones non-existence after death than to worry about ones non-existence prior to birth. Ben Bradley of Syracuse University examines several potential defenses of the idea that not existing is categorically bad for instance, because it may deprive us of potential good we might have experienced by living longer but finds them them unconvincing. As part of a multi-part subgrant examining Time Bias and Immortality, Notre Dame philosopher Meghan Sullivan suggests that Lucretius was not correct to argue that rationality requires we have symmetrical feelings about pre-life and post-life non-existence.

Sullivans work on this so-called time bias also touched on another set of common philosophical questions on whether individual immortality could be either possible or good: for instance, would an immortal afterlife entail abrupt or gradual changes such that at some point an individual would fully cease to be themselves? And if they have ceased to be themselves, do they truly live on?

Another classic objection to the desirability of immortality is that over infinite time it would eventually become tedious. In Fischer and Mitchell-Yellins Immortality and Boredom, the project leaders argue that this objection is not well founded. Even if an immortal person were to exhaust all previously known experiences, new ones might still be created, and familiar ones could still be enjoyed.

Not all conceptions of immortality need to involve the persistence of a physical body or even a soul one can talk about achieving immortality by having ones work or values persist after death. In one grant-funded article, The Immortals in Our Midst, political philosophers Ajume Wingo and Dan Demetriou suggest that leaders who establish legacies of democratic values achieve a kind of civic immortality that may be the best method for bringing democratic values to countries that are not comfortable with western approaches to politics.

The Immortality Project also provided funding for U.C. Riverside philosopher Eric Schwitzgebel to publish several works of short fiction that used narrative to elaborate on the sort of spare thought experiments more typical in the philosophy of immortality. In Reinstalling Eden: Happiness on a Hard Drive and Out of the Jar, Schwitzgebel explores the ideas of simulated universes, full-body replication and pervasive artificial intelligence relate to the possible natures of immortality.

Many religions, and Christianity in particular, hold that believers will come experience some form of eternal life. This is usually understood in terms of living on forever after death often in the bliss of heaven or the torments of hell. However, Mikel Burley, a professor of religion and philosophy at the University of Leeds, argues that the eternal life promised to Christians need not exist only in the hereafter. Instead, eternal life may be realized during a believers lifetime on earth. Burley proposes that eternal life may be enjoyed as a present possession, appealing to four-dimensionalist metaphysics, which understands time as a fourth dimension akin to the three spatial dimensions. According to four-dimensionalism, parts of time are as real as parts of space, so that all times past, present, and future are equally real and exist eternally, just as all locations defined by the three spatial dimensions (height, width, and depth) also coexist. On Burleys model, partaking of eternal life requires more than us simply existing eternally within time slices of our own past, present, and future: it requires that believers undergo a moral transformation wherein they come to participate in the life of God.

Christina Van Dyke of Calvin College used an Immortality Project subgrant to investigate the concept of sempiternity a state of changeless duration without end as described by Thomas Aquinas. She examines whether shifting to such a radically different temporal framework would necessarily change what it means to be human or whether it would be an extension of already-known types of human experience, including the timelessness aspect of some mystical experiences, or the way perception of time changes for people engaged in creative flow.

Whatever temporal form eternity takes, should believers expect to spend it all in one (very good or very bad) place? Two grant-funded articles take up the belief in the intermediate and temporary eternal states of limbo or purgatory, which are most famously expounded in Catholic theology. Kevin Timpes An Argument for Limbo explores the concept as a state as an opportunity for individuals never given sufficient opportunity to accept Gods offer of redemption during their terrestrial life, including the cognitively disabled lacking the intellectual capacities, to be reconciled to God. Meanwhile, Joshua Thurows Atoning in Purgatory suggests that an omnibenevolent being such as God would want to bring about the most good and thus save the most amount of people; so giving people a chance in purgatory to right their wrongs so that they could enter heaven is in keeping with that goal.

Befitting a subject that touches on the neverending, the aggregate work produced by the Immortality Project identified many questions ripe for future exploration. Biological investigations quickly turn up profound ethical questions about how and to whom life-extending treatments might be made available and how society might be altered if death became optional for some of its members. These ethical discussions involve the contemplation of thought experiments and imagined scenarios, raising additional meta-questions for investigation: Are such methods reliable ways to attain knowledge about immortality? Might fiction be more effective in this regard than abstract philosophizing, as Schwitzgebel suggests? What role do non-physical sciences such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, or history have in helping us understand immortality?

One of the important collective outputs of the Immortality Project has been as a model of ways that interdisciplinary approaches can serve as a case study in scientific and scholarly communication. With a topic as emotionally and ethically vexatious as immortality, the chances of immortality research being misunderstood or misappropriated seem high, making it a perennial challenge for scholars and scholarly communities to better communicate their conclusions for a fascinated public.
