How this Dillingham teenager turned an ancient epic poem into a rap – KDLG

Posted: November 23, 2021 at 4:05 pm

A Dillingham high school literature class recently had a unique assignment: Write a skit, essay or song about the worlds oldest known epic poem, the story of Gilgamesh. One student decided to apply his passion for rap to the text.

Tracen Wassily wasnt sold on the hefty "Epic of Gilgamesh," a poem that dates back roughly 4,000 years.

At first, I didnt like it," said Wassily, who is 16 years old. "But what I wrote about was the part I like most.

Wassily is an 11th grader at Dillingham High School. He and his classmates in world literature recently got a unique assignment: Transform the Epic of Gilgamesh, the worlds oldest surviving epic poem, into a skit, essay or song.

For those of us who arent fresh out of high school, heres a very basic summary of the story of Gilgamesh: Its a Mesopotamian poem about a hero who sets off on a quest to find the secret to immortality. Along the way, he forms a deep friendship and fights many battles.

When Wassily got the assignment to create something new based on the ancient text, he went right to work.

Not even a day after like right after school I got to work producing a beat, a good rhythm, like a fast-paced rhythm for what Im going to be doing," he said. "Cause thats what Im most comfortable on.

Wassily said he drew inspiration from some of his favorite artists, like Denzel Curry, XXXTentacion and Zillakami.

They just have really good energy, really good lyrics," Wassily said. "And their delivery is just, like, perfect, for me. Their production team, their engineering, its just all really good.

His song is called G and Enkidu, and it's about a minute long. He said to compose it, he focused on matching the rhythm he created on an app on his cellphone to the emotion in the poem.

For example, take Humbaba, a monster in the story. Gilgamesh and his friend, Enkidu, embark on a journey to kill Humbaba.

Gilgamesh is the son of a goddess and a mortal, and a fierce king. But hes also undiplomatic and greedy. So his mother helps create another man, Enkidu, out of a piece of clay to serve as Gilgameshs friend and distract him from his immoral ways.

The stuff I was rapping about, or singing about, was fast-paced as well, so it kind of fit really good," said Wassily. "They were fighting Humbaba.

Wassily chose to rap about Gilgamesh mourning Enkidu because of the powerful emotions each sentence evokes.

"Hes laying him down on a magnificent bed, a bed of honor," Wassily said. "Hes saying the rulers of the underworld will kiss your feet. Like, all of this stuff, just for him.

Looking ahead, Wassilly said, he wants to continue producing music, but it probably wont be based on ancient poems.

Listen to the full song here:

Here are the full lyrics:

g and enkidu on a quest for glory

slayin humbaba is the start of his story

our heroes make it to the gate

but before they serve h his fate

their knees begin to shake

they feel their stomachs ache

couple minutes later kidu slashin with his saber

the repercussions of this act kidu gonna feel later

enkidu lay down before g

his tears flow down both his cheeks

in his dreams

he could see

that the underworld is where he will be

his side kick

12 days sick

en ki du will cease to exist

accepted by his mother

un replaceable by another

g left without a brother

now his heart is in the gutter

no more enkidu g alone now

he let everybody know in his home town

that he and enkidu separated no more bro now

now he walk around like a husk with a bold frown

he can't process that he's gone now

this is the end of gilgamesh's song now

From East to West – The Rise in Popularity of Functional Fungi – ResponseSource

Posted: at 4:05 pm

Mushrooms are finally having their moment. Functional mushrooms have been used in Asia for centuries and the rest of the world is catching on - the global market was valued at over 20 million USD in 2020. Mushrooms really hit the mainstream this summer when Netflix streamed award-winning documentary Fantastic Fungi which explored their many magical properties.

With its finger firmly on the pulse, Mindful Extracts has launched a range of supplements which includes two of the most popular medicinal mushrooms: Reishi and Lions Mane.

Reishi is one of the most celebrated functional mushrooms in Chinese medical literature. Also known as the mushroom of immortality, it is believed to promote vitality, longevity and homeostasis (balance) in our system.

According to Fran McElwaine, Functional Medical Practitioner from Real Health and Wellness, Reishi mushrooms modulate immunity by helping the body to reduce its inflammatory responses and also by supporting the production of white blood cells which fight infections and cancers. Reishi works adaptogenically in the body to support adrenal function, helping us to better manage stress, whilst also improving mood (possibly owing to their high Vitamin D content).

Importantly, Reishi mushrooms also reduce oxidative stress on the body owing to the high levels of anti-oxidants they contain. Reducing oxidative stress (caused by exposure to toxins, infections and stress) is one of the single most important pro-active actions we can take to promote our health and wellbeing.

Traditionally used in Chinese medicine, Lions Mane is a natural nootropic. Buddhist monks were known to use the powdered mushroom to improve their focus.

Fran says, In addition to anti-microbial and anti-hypertensive properties, Lions Mane also helps to support the bodys blood sugar management as well as promote wound healing. But the real benefits of Lions Mane lie in its ability to support brain function and neurological health through the action of the terpenoids that are contained in both the mycelium and fruiting body of this mushroom. These terpenoids have been proven to stimulate the synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF). This can result in the regeneration of damaged nerves and improved cognitive function often experienced as a reduction in brain-fog and greater focus.

Lions Mane also reduces depression and protects against neuro-degenerative diseases such as dementia, Alzheimers and Parkinsons. Furthermore, its neuro-protective qualities mean that Lions Mane also improves sleep and our ability to manage stress.

Mindful Extracts Organic Reishi Capsules and Organic Lions Mane Capsules are log grown and contain both mycelium and fruiting body extract for maximum bioactivity. They are certified organic, vegan and contain no fillers or binders. Each capsule contains 500mg of either Reishi or Lions Mane mushroom extract, and a bottle of 60 capsules costs 21.99.

According to Fran, People are looking more and more to have a greater agency over their own health and to work pre-emptively to support wellbeing and protect themselves against disease. Super foods such as functional mushrooms offer a great way to support other positive health and lifestyle choices to help in the pro-active management of our general health

Mindful Extracts supplements are available now from http://www.mindfulextracts.co.uk -Ends-

Robin #8 Review But Why Tho? A Geek Community – But Why Tho? A Geek Community

Posted: at 4:05 pm

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Robin #8 is a killer near finale of the bloody battle royale on Lazarus Island. Joshua Williamson is bringing this to a head as writer. Gleb Melnikov and Max Dunbar enter the ring as dual artists. HiFi Studio joins the battle with coloring, and Troy Peteri remains the victor over lettering for this DC Comics series that is not dealing with Fear State. Damian Wayne and Connor Hawke. Last issue, they entered the ring for battle. Whoever wins gets immortality. Loser meets the grave.

First, a grim taste of foreshadowing. Down in the depths of Lazarus Island, two adepts of the cult watch over the dreaded Lazarus Pit. One of them surmises that instead of someone going into the pit this time, someone will be coming out. Surely this is good newsfor someone. Meanwhile, Robin and Hawke are squared up in the arena, with the previous contestants choosing sides. As you might have guessed, this is a fight issue, so most of the panels are saved for some very well-executed action drawings. Props right off the bat to Melnikov and Dunbar as they used a lot of visual symbology and expert motions to capture this fight. Their work shines, emboldened by the coloring HiFi brings to the match. Peteris lettering this time around isnt just its usual high quality, but bits of fun (one panel has GOTCHA! as an SFX, lol).

Mother Soul lurks in the background, waiting to complete the ritual she has planned for so long. The League of Lazarus gets minimal play issue after issue, and thats a plus. It keeps them shadowy. Mother Soul stays enigmatic, even with the reveal that she is Ras al Ghuls mother, a scary revelation in and of itself. I cant shake the feeling that she will be Robins major foe for a long time coming. If so, Im looking forward to it.

Robin #8 has a lot to love in this issue, from the fight to the way it comes to a surprising end. Williamson has scripted this entire run thus far perfectly, and he can craft a wonderful fight while noting some quirky moments from the supporting cast along the way. I cannot state enough how much I loved this issue. Damian truly comes off strong, as does Hawke. The art is a blur of swift, powerful action sequences and lovely, solid colors and inks. Comic fans come to a book often looking for nothing more than hero versus hero smackdown, and this series delivers that. But this issue takes every lesson learned earlier and applies them well.

I didnt think Robins journey could be so revealing, so maturing for the character by placing him in a story with more combat than dialogue. But with this issue especially, Robin has blossomed into an independent, self-motivated hero who has learned from others and his own mistakes. This journey took him from my least favorite Robin to placing him in the top three with Dick Grayson and Tim Drake. Hes still nearly the same on the outside, but the nuances are startling. Williamson was the perfect pick to bring this all together and he has refueled my zeal for a heroic character and series I love more than most, even Nightwing (who himself is a Robin). This is a brilliant action book and growth for Damian to be the one true Robin.

Robin #8 is available wherever comic books are sold.

Robin #8

TL;DR

I didnt think Robins journey could be so revealing, so maturing for the character by placing him in a story with more combat than dialogue. But with this issue especially, Robin has blossomed into an independent, self-motivated hero who has learned from others and his own mistakes.

William J. Jackson is a small town laddie who self publishes books of punk genres, Victorian Age superheroes, rocket ships, and human turmoil. He loves him some comic books, Nature, Star Trek, and the fine art of the introvert.

Marty’s mushroom: B.C. fungi named for the Saanich scientist who discovered it – Times Colonist

Posted: at 4:05 pm

The fungal ecologist from Saanich discovered a previously unknown mushroom species in a mature mixed forest near Smithers in 2009.

Immortality for John (Marty) Kranabetter has come in the form of a mushroom.

The fungal ecologist from Saanich discovered a previously unknown mushroom species in a mature mixed forest near Smithers in 2009.

The pale grey, medium-sized basidiomata, with stout stem and rounded-gilled cap, is now officially known as Cortinarius kranabetteri but to friends and family and fellow mycologists, its just Martys mushroom.

I was pretty blown away, said Kranabetter, 57, a scientist for provinces Ministry of Forests. My colleagues and I have joked over the years about having a mushroom named after us. The people who wrote the final paper never even gave the heads up, so its a surprise and an honour.

Scientists at the University of British Columbias Beaty Biodiversity Lab studied Kranabetters mushroom at the molecular level, sequencing its DNA and comparing the results with global data bases. Taxonomists determined it was indeed one of a kind, and gave it its official Latin moniker.

The specimens remain in UBCs vast mushroom vault.

Kranabetter collected two samples of the mushroom in the Smithers region while doing soil diversity studies for the province in boreal forest also containing spruce and pine. The mushroom was a symbiotic species, meaning it lives off the roots of trees.

There was another sample taken by a mycologist southwest of Hinton, Alta., in 2011, but the mushrooms complete range and just how prolific its numbers might be isnt clear.

Kranabetter hasnt seen the species since.

When I first started looking at mushrooms, collecting them and trying to put names to them was by using books, mostly from Europe, to find out what you could, said Kranabetter. Now we can send samples to UBC to determine the barcode of life, or the genetic nature of the species.

British Columbia is awash in fungi. A 2017 survey of mushroom species noted more than 3,200 species across the provinces 94.5 million hectares more than any other province. Many havent even been identified. There are many more only visible through a microscope.

The 350 entries in a field guide released this summer by the Royal B.C. Museum and authors Andy MacKinnon and Kem Luther represented only about 10% of the observed species, although about 800 are mentioned in the guide as comparisons in the notes.

Kranabetter is the third Victorian and fourth person in British Columbia to have mushrooms named in their honour. Oluna and Adolf Ceska, who have documented more than 1,400 mushroom species around Observatory Hill in Saanich over the past two decades, have two with their names Cortinarius ceskae and Inocybe ceskae.

The other is Vancouvers Paul Kroeger, best known for tracking the notorious death cap mushrooms spread in urban areas. He collected a mushroom on Haida Gwaii years ago that now is called Cortinarius kroegeri.

That fungal diversity makes mushroom hunting an adventure, said Kranabetter, who leads public workshops and outings.

He noted recent research around the Capital Regional Districts Sooke Lake Reservoir revealed 200 species of mushrooms.

Many more new species are sure to be discovered.

This shows the diverse species we have in our forests in British Columbia, said Kranabetter. We know all the plants and birds and animals, but with fungi were only 10% there. Its fun to be in this job right now to make new discoveries.

Kranabetter specializes in soil ecology and forest nutrition and productivity. He has published a number of papers on ectomycorrhiza fungal ecologyand is a member of the provincial Future Forests committee examining vulnerability to climate change.

He has also been involved with regional efforts to manage pine mushroom and golden chanterelle habitat, and teaches workshops on mushroom identification.

MacKinnon, co-author of Mushrooms of British Columbia and a leading authority on fungi, said Kranabetters work in mycology has been invaluable in the field for both professionals and amateurs.

This is a great honour, and essentially makes Marty immortal, said MacKinnon. Things named after people 200 years ago still bear those names. And it couldnt have happened to a nicer guy.

Kranabetter is taking it all in stride.

The father of two said as he was explaining the mushroom to his family, the first thing his mother-in-law asked was: Can you eat it?

He replied that you probably could, but it wouldnt taste too good.

Right now, Kranabetter will just savour that feeling of immortality.

Check Out the Fake Pitch Meeting for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – TVOvermind

Posted: at 4:05 pm

It doesnt feel like a lot of people are on the fence when it comes to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, since like it or not, Phase 4 is in full swing and people want to accept new heroes into the MCU. But with that in mind, its still easy enough to be practical when looking at this movie and finding flaws here and there that are pretty common in a lot of MCU movies. Of course, if you dont know the story of Shang-Chi its very likely that you wont know enough about him to say whether or not the movie is that accurate. The downside of introducing a character like this into the MCU is the fact that a lot of people DONT know him, which means getting used to an entirely new character and trying to invest in him in a way thats a little difficult at times. But the truth is that the action and the story are actually kind of geared toward letting people get to know who Shang-Chi is, even if the cut scenes have to come and go so quickly that we get the gist that his father is an ancient warlord that came upon the ten rings, formed the Ten Rings, gained immortality, met his wife and married and had kids while changing his ways, and then went back to being a criminal when his wife died.

The twist is that he gave up the rings when Shang-Chi was young and turned into a family man, but an old hatred took his wife from him, and that sent him right back to the life of a criminal, so its tough to say that Shang-Chis father is a hardcore villain, since he was heartbroken and wanted blood. But the fact that he turned his son into an assassin definitely negates any good dad points he might have accrued and ignoring Shang-Chis sister Xialing was a huge mistake as well. But upon being introduced as a valet along with his friend Katy, whos played by Awkwafina, Shang-Chi is seen as little more than another individual in a city where cultures and individuals collide on a regular basis. But when he and Katy are attacked on a bus the martial arts display that he puts on is more than a little impressive as he and Katy survive, but Shang-Chi loses the pendant his mother gave him years before, as its the item that the thugs were after in the first place.

The pace of the movie is actually kind of nice since it does move along without too much exposition, but the fact that Shang-Chi goes running off to Macau where apparently his sister is holed up does feel like a trap right from the start since one has to remember that Shang-Chi did run away from his home after finishing one final job for his father, which was to kill the man that ordered the death of his mother. We get to find out that his father, Wenwu, has apparently been under the impression that Xialing and Shang-Chis mother has been trapped by her own people in the mythical city of Ta Lo, where she originally came from. This is where things kind of break down a bit.

First, getting through the mythical forest happens only once every so often since the maze-like forest that can consume people if they tarry too long has a system to it that will open passageways that can ferry people to Ta Lo, but only if they act quickly. But when Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing meet up with none other than Trevor Slattery, from Iron Man 3, in the prison after being tossed in by their father, they find out from a mystical creature with wings and no head that there is a way to get to Ta Lo at that time, with a very low rate of success. Whats really funny about this is that in all that time, Wenwu couldnt find a way to get through the forest without the pendants that Xialing and Shang-Chi possessed, and somehow, he couldnt figure out that the voice of his wife might be something else trying to trick him. Even when presented with something called the Dark Gate, which was guarded by the citizens of Ta Lo, Wenwu failed to listen.

The battle between father and son was actually pretty cool and did take precedence over the fight between a water dragon and the Dweller in Darkness, a demonic creature that had been waiting to break loose and was apparently adept at fooling with peoples minds. Once the Dweller in Darkness emerges though it does battle with the water dragon and almost kills it, but thanks to Shang-Chi gaining control of the ten rings, he manages to kill the monster and save Ta Lo. All in all, this wasnt a bad movie, and the post-credits scene even left a nice way to fold it into the rest of the MCU.

Hawk, Houston’s electric kicking tee retriever, won the college football weekend – GolfDigest.com

Posted: at 4:05 pm

Last week, our college football weekend MVP Jared Casey won hearts over with his heroic game-winning catch to beat the Texas Longhorns. Within a few days, he was starring in an Applebee's commercial, proof that everybody on a college football rostereven a walk-on fullbackis one play or one big social media moment away from making a quick buck thanks to the new NIL rules.

We're about to find out if those rules apply to equipment managers, too. Or, more specifically, kicking tee retrieval guys like Big Hawk from Houston. Here's Hawk chasing down an immobile tee during Houston's 31-13 romp of Memphis Friday night:

The shirt, the mullet, the full-speed sprint, the dive and roll, the tumble back toward the sideline, the staredown. It's all there. A perfect storm of social media virality. Would anyone be surprised if Big Hawk was starring in a commercial for a local car dealership by week's end?

Apparently, Hawk's kicking tee retrieval act was paying homage to legendary kicking tee retrieval guy Bill "Mojo" Lackey, who was grabbing kicking tees and spiking them on the sideline while Big Hawk was but a twinkle in his father's eye:

Legends emulating legends. You love to see it. Somebody in Houston get Hawk on a billboard, pronto.

(In this section, we'll dole out helmet stickers for those who *almost* won the weekend.)

Five Helmet Stickers: Jordan Davis

For the second straight week, we're giving out a five spot to a Big Fella for scoring a touchdown. There may not be a bigger fella in the country than Jordan Davis, who continues to wreak absolute havoc on this college football season:

As you can hear, the Davis TD was a popular one at Sanford Stadium. A well-earned TD for the senior on Senior Day. Not long after the score, his legend continued to grow on social media:

The man is an absolute terror, which made him directing the band following Georgia 56-7 victory over Charleston Southern that much funnier of an image:

What a way to go out in Athens. All that's left now for Davis to achieve UGA immortality is a national title. It's Georgia's year. Tell 'em, Kirby.

Four Helmet Stickers: Joey Chestnut

Wait, the hot dog eating guy? Damn right. Chestnut was on hand for Coastal Carolina's 35-21 win over Texas State, which the team celebrated by having a pizza-eating contest against Chestnut, naturally.

Least surprising news ever - Chestnut won:

Three Helmet Stickers: Abule Abadi-Fitzgerald

ESPN pulled out some of their best NFL Draft/sad facts material for this graphic:

We went from 0 to 100 real quick there. Here's hoping Abule gets to see his mom again soon.

Two Helmet Stickers: Dorian Thompson-Robinson

How 'bout them UCLA Bruins? After a tough two-game stretch with a close loss to Oregon and a blowout loss at Utah, the fightin' Chip Kellys have rebounded with back-to-back wins, including Saturday's 62-33 bloodbath over rival USC. Hell of a way for senior quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson to cap off the rivalry. That man had himself a game, with 349 passing yards and four touchdowns, PLUS two more rushing tuddies, including this one:

SHEEEEESH. If that hurdle wasn't disrespectful enough, DTR got himself an unsportsmanlike conudct penalty for going full Terrell Owens and signing a fan's hat after scoring his other rushing TD:

Think of the poor children that may be watching and .... enjoying this moment. For shame.

One Helmet Sticker: Fearless Champion

Where else do we celebrate animals retiring like college football does? Nowhere. Pour one out for Fearless Champion. What a career.

-1000 Helmet Stickers: Dan Mullen

From hanging with Alabama in the SEC Chamoionship game to FIRED in less than 12 months. Things escalated very quickly for Dan Mullen in Gainesville. As many pointed out, Mullen was doomed the moment former Gators corner Marco Wilson threw that shoe against LSU last year:

For those who don't recall, the Gators were a three-to-four touchdown favorite for this LSU game at home a year ago, and they lost outright, 37-34. Seven days later, they took Alabama to the wire in Atlanta, ultimately losing 52-46. Then they got their doors blown off by Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, and have now fallen to 5-6 on the season following their OT loss at Missouri, putting them in danger of missing a bowl game should they lose to a suddenly spunky Florida State team. Fortunately for Mullen, he won't be around for that potential debacle. Making matters worse was the fact he got trolled into another dimension by Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz:

If you're lost on what this means, Mullen likes to dress like Darth Vader to press conference on occasion, usually around Halloween. That means a 5-5 Mizzou squad had this victory celebration/troll job planned out before actually beating Florida, which took a two-point conversion in overtime. If that's not an indictment on the Mullen era at UF, we're not sure what is.

Chennai woman buries ‘soothsayer’ husband alive to attain immortality for him – The Tribune

Posted: November 21, 2021 at 9:44 pm

Chennai, November 21

A 55-year-old woman in Perumbakam in Chennai is alleged to have buried her husband alive as he had wished to attain immortality after death.

The daughter of Nagaraj, who was working as an IT professional came home on Thursday and found that her father was missing and her mother Lakshmi did not inform anything. However on Saturday, after continuous pestering, informed her that on the basis of the wish of her father he was buried alive so that he could attain immortality.

The husband, Nagaraj, 59, after visiting a few temples across Tamil Nadu had told people that he was communicating directly to God and that he was a priest. He had also built a small temple in the backyard of their home and used it to deliver prophecies to people who visited the place.

Police said according to his daughter, on Tuesday, November 16, Nagaraj developed chest pain and told his wife that he was going to die and asked her to bury him alive so that he could attain immortality.

After he was unconscious, Lakshmi called two labourers and told them that they want to dig a big pit and claimed that it was for a water tank. She buried Nagaraj on November 17, Wednesday while he was unconscious.

Police dug out the body from the pit in presence of RDO and sent it for postmortem. Perambakkam SHO told IANS that the postmortem report would reveal whether Nagaraj was buried alive. IANS

Gillian Chung starred in Da Ji with heavy make-up and styling, causing immortality to be lost. Netizens ridiculed: thinking that they would travel to the Tang Dynasty

40-year-old Zhong Xintong (A Jiao) starred as the heroine of the mainland online movie Feng Shen: Da Ji. She is always a topic of netizens when she is fat and thin. The film crew released Gillians reply to her thin body and riding a white horse. Netizens praised him for being full of immortality, and even pointed out that his face value had returned to the peak; however, after watching the latest movie trailer, a group of netizens seemed to want to return the praise and speech before, Zhong ridiculed Gillian as the queen mother is more than Daji.

Gillian, who was once known as the beauty in ancient costume, played the role of the classic beauty Daji in Fengshen: Daji, and staged a romantic drama with Shen Zhenxuan, who played the king of Zhou. In the latest trailer of the movie, Gillians Daji look tends to be gorgeous and sexy, but Gillian wears thick fur, which makes her figure more slender and bloated. He also adds exaggerated headwear, which is very different from the previous Daji look. In particular, it failed to replace the classic Wen Bixia of the year.

In addition, some netizens pointed out that Gillians makeup was too heavy and the makeup was not meticulous enough, as if the eyebrows on both sides were drawn to different thickness by the makeup artist, and the eye makeup and lip makeup were too old-fashioned. A group of netizens discussed the appearance of Gillians Daji, pointing out that Gillians body is obese, and her shape is unsatisfactory: Like a queen dowager than a traitorous concubine, A Jiao looks more like a human than a human being, Im so fat, I thought I went to the Tang Dynasty, I dont know how to solve the hard problems, there is a kind of Xue Jiayan feel. And so on.
