The NFL is gambling it can survive the COVID test without leaguewide testing – Toronto Star

Posted: at 12:35 am

Given the National Football Leagues history as sporting behemoth built on the back of North Americas insatiable appetite for sports betting, maybe it only makes sense that the NFL is the first to navigate the COVID-related chaos upon us by taking a particular pandemic gamble.

On the surface, at least, there are those who will tell you the NFLs weekend decision to halt COVID testing on players who are vaccinated and asymptomatic doesnt seem so risky. Never mind that widespread testing and early virus detection has, to this point, been one of the cornerstones of the return-to-play policies of all the big sports leagues, and continues to be in place in the NHL and NBA.

Risk is relative. And when you weigh a case of asymptomatic coronavirus against the usual occupational hazards of a pro football player, even a virus that has killed more than 800,000 Americans doesnt necessarily seem so daunting. In a workplace where the employees face the very real prospect of incurring life-altering brain trauma, not to mention other various forms of debilitating bodily harm, whos afraid of a little potential respiratory distress? It is a survivalists sport played by some of the greatest, fittest athletes on the planet. Surely they will be mostly fine if they carry around a little COVID.

That is an assumption thats impossible to make given how little we ultimately know about this virus.

And as for the not-so-small detail that asymptomatic carriers, even vaccinated ones, can transmit the virus, and that NFL players arent living in a bubble, lets just say this might not be what most of us have in mind when we applaud athletes for giving back to their communities.

Still, in world anxious to get back to business as usual, this is about business as the No. 1 priority. Most NFL careers are short and come with few guarantees. So doing whatevers necessary to ensure this NFL season continues to bulldoze its way through the pandemic comes down to money, both for the leagues billionaire owners and for its rank-and-file athletes. Its one thing to make a decision thats antithetical to public health. Forfeited dates hurt personal wealth. On that front, the NFL stayed on track to get through its Week 15 without sacrificing so much as a game, albeit with a Tuesday doubleheader still ahead. Clearly, they have no appetite to miss games in Week 16 and beyond.

Tweaking the testing criteria in a way that is likely to produce fewer positives is a plain statement of intent: The NFL is going to play this season, start to finish. And if the league suddenly knows a lot less about how widespread the virus is in its midst, it is willing to take that risk.

With the NHL already awash in COVID-related postponements, and with the NBA doing its best to keep games going even if it means rosters dotted with replacement players unrecognizable to anyone outside their immediate families, maybe its no surprise that there have been jealous rumblings that hockey and basketball ought to mimic the NFLs instinct to plow through. As Steve Yzerman, the Hall of Fame player and Detroit Red Wings general manager, was telling reporters the other day, our players are testing positive with very little symptoms, if any symptoms at all I dont see it as a threat to their health at this point.

I think you might take it a step further and question why are we even testing, for guys that have no symptoms? Yzerman continued. I think (the league is) going to act and make a decision based on the health of everyone involved, for the health of society in general.

Ryan OReilly, the St. Louis Blues captain, echoed the sentiment.

Weve got guys vaccinated and double vaccinated and some guys arent showing any symptoms, and theyre getting popped and theyre in COVID protocol," O'Reilly told reporters. I think Id like to see no testing unless you have symptoms, but its not up to me.

Decisions like this, of course, shouldnt be left up to players who have spent their careers pushing through injury and sickness to achieve their goals, especially in a post-bubble situation where those players arent cordoned off from society. Theyre playing in arenas with support staff and fans, at least for now. Theyre inhabiting weight rooms and dressing rooms and gyms populated by team employees. They have the resources for regular testing in a world where the rest of the population is lining up around the block for short supplies of free rapid tests. And theyre only operating their leagues, by the way, by the grace of public-health units and governments who have the power to shut them down and probably wont be thrilled in this country, at least to hear high-profile calls for a lowering of infection-control standards.

But theres another reason why the NHL and NBA cant as easily crib the NFLs wont to test less: The NHL and NBA have an international border to cross, which comes with testing requirements for all. Precisely how tenable the regular crossing of that border will become in the days ahead is anyones guess; on Saturday, the Golden State Warriors were so nonplussed by the perilousness of the journey to Toronto that they sent a skeleton crew of relative no-names to play the Raptors, leaving the big talent in the States. As much as the Raptors would benefit from playing home games against Americas G-League-level travelling parties, its not a situation thats sustainable.

Its not as though there are a lot of attractive choices here, let alone easy ones. The NBA and NHL, both of which have tightened protocols around masking and testing, are at least trying to put the brakes on what might be a runaway train. But when weve living in a moment of chaos, you cross your fingers and hope as much as anything. A full NHL shutdown might be coming, although the NBA is clearly doing its best to give itself every chance to first salvage its all-important Christmas Day schedule of games, a traditional ratings winner. The Maple Leafs have halted all team activities until after the Christmas break. The Raptors are back to practising like its the bad old days of socially-distant cautiousness one player and one masked coach at a time.

The NFL has chosen to do its best to pretend COVIDs latest wave isnt upon it. Among vaccinated players, only the symptomatic will be tested, which means anyone who cares about his game cheque, let alone the playoff implications, surely wouldnt be foolish enough to cop to so much as a runny nose. Its what you would expect from the league of denial. Dont ask and dont tell if you dont feel well. Plough through and get paid. At a moment when there are no absolutes, save for the desire to finish a season, its a gamble the NFL is clearly willing to take, no matter the risks.

Gambling ads have doubled since online casinos were legalized – NL Times

Posted: at 12:34 am

The number of gambling advertisements has doubled since last year, the Volkskrant reported based on research by Nielsen. In October and November 2020, there were 170,066 gambling commercials in the Netherlands. This year there were 366,631 in that same period.

The rise in gambling ads is mainly due to the legalization of online gambling in October. Eleven casinos in the Netherlands have a license for online gambling.

Of the eleven, Holland Casino spent the most money on advertising during October and November, dropping 6.4 million euros on commercials for its online offering. Toto spent nearly 4.6 million euros. The two firms are owned by the Dutch state. FairPlayCasino has spent 3.3 million euros, followed by BataviaCasino, which paid 3.2 million euros for advertising, and the 2.6 million euros spent by Tombola, the newspaper reported.

The money allowed for a total of about 370,000 gambling advertisements during the two-month period, according to Nielsen. Roughly 273,000 of them were for online gambling. That on its own eclipsed the 170,000 adverts for offline gambling during the same two-month period last year. Nielsen data also showed that about 88 percent of gambling advertisements appear on websites, including social media platforms, which are not as well-regulated as television adverts. Gambling spots can only appear on television during specific times of the day to prevent barraging younger people with gambling messages.

A majority of members of the Tweede Kamer are concerned about the increase in gambling advertisements. They said the commercials can lead to a rise in people addicted to gambling

MPs suggested tightening regulations around gambling ads. The vast majority of gambling ads are on the internet, where they are not subjected to the same restrictions as on TV. The Tweede Kamer wants a ban on gambling ads on the internet before 9 p.m., similar as has been done on TV. They also demanded a ban on "untargeted ads for risk-taking games."

The MPs and experts are concerned about the impact gambling can have on the social norm. "As an individual, I get to see a gambling commerical, but I also know that others see the same advertisements. Combined with legalization, it leads to a change in social norms. It will definitely lead to a rise in addiction," health psychologist Arie Dijkstra said.

Minister of Legal Protection Sander Dekker said he would consider the wishes of the Tweede Kamer but thinks it is "too early" for a ban.

Director of the Consumer's Union Sandra Molenaar has also raised concerns that profit trumps the wellbeing of the consumer and the impact particularly young people who are more susceptible to the ads. "Apparently, the commercial interest of the gambling industry outweighs the wellbeing of consumers," Molenaar said about the lack of regulations surrounding gambling ads that are allowed to be broadcast to children as long as they do not make up more than 30 percent of the audience.

Ukraine Ends the Year Without Finalizing New Gambling Tax… – Casino.Org News

Last updated on: December 20, 2021, 08:10h.

The year 2021 is coming to a close without Ukraine having finalized its new gambling tax regulations. The Verkhovna Rada, the countrys parliament, is going on break, leaving gaming operators guessing about what will happen next.

Ukraine lawmakers initially approved an update to the countrys gambling regulations last year. However, there were a couple of points in Bill 2713 that were left unsettled. Among those was how to address taxes.

Lawmakers began addressing the issues and came close to having something worked out after reaching a consensus in August. A vote on the bill was expected in November. However, that didnt happen. Although the Ukraine Committee on Finance signed off on the tax measures, parliamentarians werent in a hurry.

It now seems that another delay is inevitable. Theres a chance that a decision could be reached before the end of the year. However, the odds arent good. In addition to the holiday season having arrived, Ukraine is dealing with other issues, including the threat of a possible invasion by Russian troops.

There are reportedly 115,000 Russian troops along the border between Russia and Ukraine, and that is certainly more worrisome than how much casino operators must pay in taxes.

Everything is in place for Ukraines new Gambling Law to be implemented. The only thing that is needed, unless something stands out as questionable, is for the parliament to sign off on the new language. There will be a 10% tax rate established across the industry, and the final layout of Bill 2713 eliminated certain controversial fees that were going to be introduced.

Even 4H Agency CEO and senior partner Ilya Machavariani was surprised that no approval has arrived. He is quoted by SBC News as saying, We are constantly monitoring the situation with everything that concerns gambling regulations in Ukraine, and today we were expecting it to finally unfold into something more meaningful than another delay.

He added that theres an outside chance resolution could come before the end of the year, but that, The prospects of that are rather grim.

To be fair to the lawmakers, they havent been sitting around drinking nalyvka or kompot. From December 14-17, they approved 22 new laws as they look to keep the country moving forward. Among these were a law to develop new initiatives for a digital economy, and another that allows military forces from other countries to enter the country for multinational exercises.

Georgian athletes oppose legislative restrictions on gambling, warn of losing funding – Agenda.ge

Posted: at 12:34 am

Georgian athletes have stated earlier today that Georgian sport will be left without funding if the parliament approves legislative restrictions on gambling in the country.

They noted that increased taxes for the businesswill not allow it to further sponsor sport in Georgia and thus will put many types of sports in a difficult situation and kill prospects for development, athletes stated.

At the press conference along with the Head of Georgian Gambling Association (GGA) Giorgi Mamulaishvili, athletes also noted that many of them might give up on their profession as a result of lost funding.

Personally, I feel great support from gambling business, my success is much valued and I dont want successful athletes to be left without funding, World and Olympic Champion in weightlifting Lasha Talakhadze said.

World and European champion in Sambo Nino Odzelashvili stated that the gambling business stood by the sport and without funding Georgian sport would not be able to exist.

Mamulaishvili in his turn said that if legislative restrictions are approved by the parliament gambling businesses will no longer have the opportunity to make large investments in various fields.

Adoption of this law will harm not only one specific area, but also the population. People who want to play will enter the illegal market and no one should have the illusion that this will change for the better, Mamulaishvili said.

In November the Georgian government announced new regulations for online gambling businesses and the draft bill of the regulations was submitted to the parliament on December 13.

Per the legislative document online gambling businesses will see up to 70% increase in taxes, gambling advertisements will be banned completely and the lower age limit for gamblers will increase to 25 years of age.

The bill has not yet been adopted by the Georgian parliament.

Experts warn of increased gambling harm in WA as TAB sale raises prospect of electronic gaming – ABC News

Posted: at 12:34 am

A financial counsellor to some of the most vulnerable people in Western Australia says the state government should "hang its head in shame" if it allows electronic gaming to be rolled out in TABs across the state.

Alan Gray travels throughout the Kimberley helping Aboriginal people in financial crisis and has seen the bank statements of people with gambling addictions who find themselves with no money for their children.

So he does not want to see the introduction of simulated racing machines into TAB outlets in the Kimberley, which could happen with the sale of the WA TAB.

"I just see these machines as a drift to further entrench poverty through gambling," he said.

Mr Gray said he was concerned the stategovernment could be unwindingone of the great things about WA society having addictive gaming machines restrictedto the casino and therefore somewhat difficult to access.

While there are TAB outlets offering opportunities to gamble in the Kimberley not to mention plenty of online gambling options it is a 2,000-odd kilometre drive from Broome to the Burswood casino.

"I hear people laugh about how if they got a lump sum they would go to the casino," he said.

"It's what they want to do."

Poker machines are banned by law in WA and electronic gaming machines (EGMs), as well as simulated racing games, are only allowed at Crown Perth casino.

But the McGowan government decided to allow the successful WA TAB bidder to offer electronic simulated racing games, like Trackside, in TAB agencies when it first called for expressions of interest in 2019.

The sale of the state-owned betting agency was put on hold last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but is now back on track.

But it has been kickstarted in one of the most tumultuous periods for gambling in WA, with the TAB under increasing pressure from online gambling and the state's monopoly casino and gambling watchdog facing the scrutiny of a royal commission this year.

The inquiry, which will hand down its findings in March, has looked into WA's policy of banning poker machines and whether, over time, EGMs have changed to become very similar to poker machines.

During the inquiry, the commissionheard of new research which found that WA's low levelof problem gambling despite having the highest proportion of gamblers in the country wasbecause of the restricted availability of EGMs.

Lead researcher Matthew Rockloff, of CQUniveristy, calledEGMs "the most dangerous form of gambling that we know of".

"The closer you are to a venue that has gambling opportunities, the more likely you are to have gambling problems," he said.

Dr Rockloff said that while Trackside was slower than poker machines, he was concerned it would allow TAB gamblers to gamble without a break, instead of waiting for the next race to start.

"It turns what's a non-continuous form of gambling into a continuous form of gambling," he said.

"There's no doubt it will be associated with some increase in harm."

Like Mr Gray, Dr Rockloff questioned why WA would undo its good work in restricting gambling opportunities by allowing simulated racing games in TABs.

"Let's not kid ourselves, that's what it's all about: making that sale come off with a better payoff," he said.

"But the downside to that, of course, is expanding gambling opportunities right at a time when we've just shown that gambling problems are a lot lower in Western Australia.

"They're a lot lower because Western Australia has restricted gambling opportunities."

The WA TAB has hundreds of agencies throughout Perth and regional areas, including standalone betting shops as well as outlets in pubs and clubs.

One of the frontrunners to buy the WA TAB, Tabcorp, runs the betting agencies in every other state and operates the Trackside simulated racing game.

The ABC asked former Racing and Gaming Minister Reece Whitby about how many TAB agencies would be able to offer simulated racing products under the sale, but received no response.

In addition, the government did not respond when questioned about whether the successful bidder would still have to make a $1.2 million-plus payment to Crown Perth if they decided to offer simulated racing products, which was an element of the previous sale process.

A government spokeswoman said there was healthy interest in the expression-of-interest process of the sale.

She said requests for binding offers were likely to be issued early next year and a new operator could be in place by the end of the year.

"The racing industry will continue to be consulted through the sale process, with a focus on the development and refinement of the racing industry funding model," she said.

Under the new sale process, the WA government has removed the requirement for the successful new operator to fund the racing industry.

During the previous sale process, it said that allowing simulated racing products would help the new operator to meet this condition.

The sale documents highlighted the opportunity for growth in a market that was "relatively under-penetrated relative to other jurisdictions", with "significant scope for product innovation via new products and bet types".

The WA Council of Social Service (WACOSS) has questioned why the new operator would needthe revenue of these games, given it no longer had to fund the racing industry.

Chief executive Louise Giolitto has called on the WA government to ensure the wagering licence of the new operator doesnot include the ability to offer simulated racing games.

"We understand the desire for the WA government to achieve the best price possible for the asset, but at what cost?," she said.

Ms Giolitto said WACOSS did not want Trackside to lead to the de facto introduction of poker machines at TABs, like at Crown Perth.

"Our concern is that over time, these products will morph into full-blown pokie machines, and they will be spread all over WA," she said.

ECA awards responsible gambling certification to SNG – Casino Beats

Posted: at 12:34 am

Spielbanken Niedersachsen has become the latest land-based casino group to achieve certification according to the ECA responsible gambling framework following an independent audit conducted by auditors.

This, says the authority, sees the Germany-based gaming operator ensure that it is operating in adherence to the latest standards in responsible gambling upheld by the licensed land-based casinos industry across Europe.

The main criteria of the framework covers the topics of employee training, player education, entrance policies, stakeholder engagement, advertising and marketing, and research and awareness.

Max Rsle, managing director of SNG, explained: Responsible Gambling in Germany is an integral part of our day-to-day business as mandated by law. The audit, however, is an opportunity to improve our processes and develop our standards even further. It is in the interest of all members to support responsible gambling and in doing so, strengthen the credibility of the ECA.

I would like to thank our auditors, Prof. J. Hfeli and Ms. S. Brecht, two experts in the field of responsible gambling and management training, for their competence and diligence. The audit was not disruptive and proved an invaluable and enriching process for our 10 casinos and all employees within our group.

As a serious casino operator, it can only be in our interest to offer our customers responsible gambling standards that fall under a uniform procedure. It is a principle not only of consumer protection, but also of credibility.

SNG joins a growing number of ECA members currently certified according to the responsible gambling framework, which includes Casino Cosmopol (Sweden), Casino 2000 (Luxembourg), Casino Monte Carlo (Monaco), Veikkaus (Finland), Casino Belgrade (Serbia), Spielbanken Baden-Wrttemberg (Germany), Merkur Spielbanken Sachsen Anhalt (Germany), Holland Casino and Casinos Austria, with several others said to be currently undergoing the process of certification.

Whilst our members strictly adhere to the legislation and regulations set forth by the individual countries in which they operate, it is of the utmost importance that a comprehensive standard is set across all European casinos for the safe-guarding of our customers, commented Per Jaldung, ECA chair.

Responsible Gambling is the tenet to which all members of the ECA are fully committed. The totally independent nature of the audit ensures that these principles are indisputable and represent the highest levels of probity adopted by our members.

BLUE DIAMOND, Nev. The Nevada landscape offers such a fetching and beguiling contrast. You can wake up in the morning in one of the casino hotels and survey the sunrise glistening off the desert rock and cactus and the concrete mass that is Las Vegas; swoon to the verdant inner-city acreage, with a handsome waterfall, that is the Wynn Golf Club all of which brings about a rock, sand and green medley that overwhelms.

You can take excursions that stir the imagination and lift the spirits options from helicoptering to a sit-down by the Colorado River on the floor of the Grand Canyon.Havent been there and done that, but is it ever something to think about?

You can take the scenic tour out into Red Rock Canyon where a museum video and brochure explain the stunning mountains of the area date back 600 million years and once was covered by the sea.

It is fascinating to photograph the red-and-orange rock formations which have come about as a result of the oxidation of minerals over millions of years. You also may spot a red-tailed hawk in a Joshua tree, a desert bighorn sheep along the sandstone bluffs and can easily see how the spines of the cholla cactus keep one and all at arms-length.

More: You can bet on having a good time in Las Vegas even without gambling

This western neighborhood is home to coyote, gray fox, bobcat and mountain lion; California jackrabbits, kangaroo rat, the poisonous Gila monster, the desert tortoise which has been around for 3 million years three kinds of rattlesnakes and the ubiquitous burros which remain controversial. One reference suggests that … their population must be controlled because they damage food and water sources for native animals.

While many who sojourn to the casino haven that is Las Vegas never move from the slot machines and the gaming tables unless they think it might change their luck the fun of Las Vegas is to dally into the aforementioned and to visit the Hoover Dam, the engineering marvel of the Great Depression era.

The photo-ops, even for an amateur shutterbug, are splendidly inspiring. You know that what you see there in the panoramic offering will always be embedded in your minds eye, but it will be nice to call up those inspiring scenes on your iPhone while you are idling by an indolent fire on a cozy winter evening or when relaxing on an April afternoon with the jonquils, azaleas and dogwoods reminding you that life can be enriching and enchanting.

I love being a tourist.Since I am not a scientist with allotted time to delve deeply into a subject, I hold deep affection for those who have researched and ferreted out details, connecting with the heart and soul of a bountiful landscape, and allows one to become the beneficiary of tourist cliff notes.

It sure trumps the synthetic, the artificial and the faux and the counterfeit to which so many are afflicted.I prefer the rush of natures remarkable offerings over the rush that comes with the roll of the dice that has jackpot potential.Lest the gamblers forget, the best of nature has no downside and no risk unless you are a one-legged mountain climber.

When it is time to take a break, there is no better place than the Coffee Cup in downtown Boulder City, whose origin came about when the federal government built expansive dormitories to house the dam builders.

At this delightful restaurant which is a curious throwback to the past, you can order the best hamburger, a soft drink or a beer, and delight in a mix of clientele which poignantly reflects modern-day Americana an amalgamation of accents, race, dress and hairstyles.

This is where the burros come down out of the hills to a watering hole and free hay.You are constantly warned not to feed the wild horses and burros.Violators can be fined as much as $500.

At nearby Cottonwood Station, which the Internet identifies as ghost town, locals have posted a different sign with regard to the problematic burros. Its message is akin to what most of us feel about Congress these days, Leave our asses alone.
