Oklahoma Takes Down Minnesota in The Bahamas – Sooner Maven

Posted: November 23, 2021 at 4:15 pm

Taylor Robertson continued her hot shooting with 19 points including four 3-pointers in the second half as Oklahoma routed Minnesota 88-69 in The Bahamas on Monday.

The Sooners improved to 5-1 and finished fifth in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

I think its been a really good tournament, said first-year coach Jennie Baranczyk. I think we learned a lot about ourselves.

Just being able to be here and play three games in three days, weve just grown was a team from day one to now, Robertson said. Its been fun to get even closer with everybody on an off the court, and you can tell on the court when we play.

Robertson led the Sooners in scoring all three games of the tournament and on Monday joined OU's 1,500-career-point club. She reached the milestone on her final bucket of the night (her 23rd 3 of the event) and became the 12th Sooner to score 1,500 points.

Robertson got plenty of help from her teammates as Skylar Vann came off the bench to score 15, and senior Madi Williams posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Kelbie Washington had six points and led the Sooners with eight assists and three steals.

Theyre starting to strategize together, and thats really what you want to have happen, especially in a new system, Baranczyk said.

Baranczyks team outrebounded the Golden Gophers 51-31 (18-4 on the offensive glass) and forced the tempo all day, as Minnesota finished with 20 turnovers.

I would say were playing a lot more free, Llanusa said. Kind of going out there and running our team by ourselves is pretty cool.

Were fun to watch, Baranczyk said. Its a fun style because theyre really good.

Llanusa, whos lost all or part of every season to injury since shes been a member of the OU roster, is back from back surgery and playing better than ever.

I havent played three games in a row since high school, she said, and I honestly didnt know if I could do it. But the energy from my teammates and everybody else helped out a lot.

OU takes the Thanksgiving holiday off and will return to the floor next Tuesday at SMU.

Were a pretty good bball team when we play together and have that fun, Baranczyk said. I know it sounds simple, and it is, but when we do that, were pretty darn good.

Cougs earn their third win of season; get ready for trip to Nassau, Bahamas

HAILEE SPEIR

WSU guard Grace Sarver (20) dribbles past Northern Arizona Univeristy guard Nyah Moran during a college basketball game against Northern Arizona University at Beasley Coliseum on Nov. 12, 2021, in Pullman.

The Cougars womens basketball team earned another impressive win on Sunday, this time over the Idaho Vandals in the Battle of the Palouse, 73-59.

This is the first time in program history that the Cougars started the year at 3-0 in three consecutive seasons. The Cougars had an impressive day as Tara Wallack, Johanna Teder, Charlisse Leger-Walker and Bella Murekatete had points in double digits.

Teder led the team in points overall with 13, shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point range. Wallack had an impressive day as well, securing 12 points and six rebounds for the Cougars. The younger Leger-Walker sister continued to prove consistent, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

KrystalLeger-Walker proved to be effective in play-making as she had a team-high with six assists. Throughout the game, she was able to get the ball moving for the Cougars and provide an offensive presence that was hard for the Vandals to keep up with.

Prior to the game, she ranked second with assists averaging 5.5 per game. She also led the team in points with steals posting three.

Murekatetes dominance was showcased with 10 rebounds and three blocks against the Vandals. She has been one of the most aggressive rebounders this season in the Pac-12 as she currently ranks second in the conference in rebounding at 11 boards per game. Her current progress ranks her as the 22nd-best average in the NCAA.

The Cougars were able to dominate from the get-go as they were 50 percent from field-goal range compared to Idaho shooting only 32.8 percent. They also learned from their mistakes against Northern Arizona as they better protected the ball and kept their composure throughout the game. Defense proved to be pivotal in the Cougars win as they secured 30 defensive rebounds, seven steals and 16 points off of turnovers.

Next for the Cougars will be their first major test as they play against the Miami Hurricanes in the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship on Nov. 25 in Nassau, Bahamas. This will be the Cougarsfirst meeting versusthe Hurricanes since the Cougars had a hard-foughtloss to the Hurricanes 74-68 at the 2019 Miami Holiday Classic.

That game will be followed by a second in the Bahamas. Game two will see WSU take on No. 5 North Carolina State. The entire tournament can be watched on FloHoops.

Felisha Legette-Jack and her Buffalo Bulls beat Syracuse womens basketball in the Bahamas – syracuse.com

Posted: at 4:15 pm

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A week ago, Felisha Legette-Jack stood at center court in the Carrier Dome and watched her No. 33 jersey rise to the Carrier Dome rafters.

The former Syracuse womens basketball star became the first Orange female athlete to experience a jersey retirement.

On Monday night in the Bahamas, she guided her Buffalo team past her alma mater in the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Buffalo women defeated Syracuse 88-79 in the last of three games there.

You compartmentalize, Legette-Jack said Monday night. It was amazing what I experienced last week in my hometown and my alma mater. The teammates, the friends, the family, the love that poured towards our family and myself is something I will never forget. And my heart is wide-open for Orange when it comes to what weve done in the past.

But this is my job here and this is my team. I know how hard these young people work. And it would be wrong for me to give them 99% of me. So when we got on that highway to get back up the road going west on 90, we were already game-planning for these games we had ahead.

Buffalo, 2-2 after losses to No. 1 South Carolina and Oklahoma, led by as many as 15 against the Orange. The Bulls got stellar performances from Summer Hemphill (28 points, 10 rebounds, 4-4 from the 3-point line) and Dyaisha Fair, who scored a game-high 34 (7-11 from 3).

Hemphill and Fair traveled with Legette-Jack and the rest of their team to Syracuse to witness their coachs jersey retirement. The Bulls watched Notre Dame soundly defeat Syracuse in the Dome.

Of course we were there to support Coach Jack and her jersey retirement. And Syracuse, obviously, happened to be playing and were basketball players so we were definitely tuned into the game, Hemphill said. It is ironic that we did have the chance to play them at the (Battle 4 Atlantis) tournament. We definitely took notes during that game. Were basketball players. Any game were watching, were looking to see what offense theyre running, what defense theyre running, what is the opposing team running against them, how is the other team scoring and stuff like that. Just to be able to get an early scout on them, it definitely helped us.

Buffalo, as a team, shot 13-of-22 from the 3-point line (.591).

Syracuse guard Chrislyn Carr directs the action as the Orange women take on Monmouth University the Dome Wednesday, November 10, 2021. N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com

Syracuse, too, made shots from that distance. The Orange went 10-of-20 from the 3-point line. Chrislyn Carr (5-for-6) and Chrissy Carr (4-6) were SUs most successful shooters Monday. Chrislyn Carr finished with a team-high 23 points. Chrissy Carr added 19 and six rebounds. Teisha Hyman (14 points) and Eboni Walker (12 points) also contributed.

The Orange, now 2-4, did not win a game in the Bahamas.

Obviously a tough outcome, said SUs acting coach Vonn Read. I thought we did some positive things. We shot 45% from the field, so we were executing offensively. We just didnt do a good job on No. 0 (Hemphill) and No. 2 (Fair). They had really good games.

What we learned from UConn’s weekend in Bahamas: Fudd’s growth, inconsistent post play, bench issues – Thehour.com

Posted: at 4:15 pm

After three games in three days, the Huskies are returning with their first loss of the season along with a handful of lessons and things to improve upon before starting conference play next week.

As as the team spent its final day in the Bahamas Tuesday, UConn also dropped down to No. 3 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll.

From a breakout performance from freshman Azzi Fudd to a 19-turnover loss to South Carolina, heres what we learned from UConns run in the Womens Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament:

Freshman Azzi Fudd played small roles in UConns season opener against Arkansas and in its blowout of Minnesota in the first game in the Bahamas. Whether it was pregame nerves or in-game overthinking, Fudd seemed reluctat to take her own shots and passed the ball instead.

The former No. 1 Class of 2021 recruit finally got her legs with an 18-point, six-3-pointer, performance during UConns semifinal game against South Florida. In 27 minutes, she helped not only create momentum shifts for the Huskies but carried them through the Bulls comeback attempts and onto advancing to Mondays championship.

But while Fudds shooting off the bench can still a weapon for UConn, the freshman is still just four games into her college career and making, well, freshman mistakes. When she found herself double teamed, instead of trying to take a dribble and break free she immediately passed off the ball which would then often lead to an opponent steal and UConn turnover.

Against South Carolina, Fudd played just 10 minutes and missed her only shot. Expectation remain high for the Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year, but Fudd will need to grow.

I keep reminding myself that this is probably the worst youre ever going to see Azzi, UConns Geno Auriemma said after the teams win over South Florida. So whats that say? Shes got a chance to be a pretty special player.

UConn was outrebounded twice this weekend. First by South Florida (34-29) and then by South Carolina (42-25). While we saw some great plays by the Husky bigs throughout thr three games, the lack of consistency was a large part of why UConn lost the tournaments championship to the Gamecocks.

Senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa came up huge for UConn during the first half of Mondays championship. She used her body and put up three major blocks against South Carolina to help UConn open a 13-point lead in the first 20 minutes.

But against both the Bulls and the Gamecocks, Nelson-Ododa and sophomore Aaliyah Edwards were unable to carry the frontcourt load by themselves. Auriemma kept graduate transfer Dorka Juhsz as the first or second player off the bench during the weekend, but even the former Ohio State All-Big selection ran into trouble, sometimes rushing defense and coming up short without the rebound.

Auriemma said rebounding is fixable following Mondays loss to South Carolina, and it is. And the Huskies have a lot of time to get it right and work on bringing guards to help out under the rim, as well. Plus, theyll have more depth in the frontcourt rotation when junior Aubrey Griffin returns from a high ankle sprain.

I think, as guards, it is our job to get in there and get a rebound and box their main rebounders out, senior Evina Westbrook said. Its our job to get in there, get the rebound if theyre (UConn bigs) putting in all the work boxing out their best rebounders.

UConn had 12 available players this weekend (Griffin sat out all three games due the injury) and 10 saw action across all three games.

During the Huskies 88-58 win over Minnesota, 10 players were used. Sophomore Piath Gabriel made her season debut and with freshman Caroline Ducharme scored her first collegiate points. Four of UConns reserves played double-digit minutes.

On Sunday and Monday both closer games nine players were used. Sophomore star Paige Bueckers averaged 35 minutes across the three games, while last years go-to sixth player and eventual starter sophomore Nika Mhl averaged just 6.3 minutes.

While the best players for each game will play the most minutes, its surprising to see Mhl play so few minutes as she was pushed to the eighth spot in the rotation with Fudd and Juhsz the first two off the bench first.

With Big East play sure to bring more room for more players to find time on the court (Mir McLean made her season debut for two minutes against South Carolina, but freshman Amari Deberry has yet to play), it will be interesting to see how the lineup is adjusted once Griffin is healthy.

Following the loss to South Carolina, senior Christyn Williams and Evina Westbrook spoke to media about how the game was a learning opportunity. They were quiet, as most players would be after losing to the top-ranked team, but their demeanor was confident and strong.

Were going to grow a lot from this game, Williams said. Wed much rather have this L in November than later in the season in March.

After last seasons lone loss to Arkansas, UConn did a 180 and got better. Defense was stronger, offense was more in sync and players adjusted to their roles. Not only did they win out until the Final Four, including an upset of South Carolina in overtime in Storrs, but the Huskies became the nations No. 1 team through the end of the regular season.

UConn will no doubt learn from Monday and from the past weekend. Starting next Friday with the opening of Big East play at Seton Hall, the Huskies have five games before the winter holiday break. Four out of the five are nonconference games that will test the team, including two of the APs Top-25 in Louisville (No. 10) and UCLA (No. 19). The team will have strong competition to test potential new lineups and nail down new defensive plays to help aide its post players.

Were still over four months from March. Every single program will look vastly different in the spring than they do now. While the Bahamas trip definitely exposed some holes in UConns lineup, theres plenty of time for the team to improve.

Minnis defends early election call in The Bahamas – Nation News

Posted: at 4:15 pm

Posted on November 23, 2021

Prime Minister of The Bahamas Dr Hubert Minnis (Internet image)

NASSAU Former Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis defended his decision to call an early general election which his ruling Free National Movement (FNM) lost on September 16, saying he needed a new mandate to deal with the difficult times that will engulf the Bahamas in the future.

The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) reversed its humiliating defeat in the last general election, when it was trounced 35-4 by the FNM. The party, headed by Phillip Brave won 32 of the 39 seats.

Minnis speaking at the New Mount Olive Baptist Church, said the new mandate was necessary since the government would have been faced with very, very difficult decisions.

I would say to you we have some headwinds that are coming. In order to manage those headwinds that we see coming, it was essential to have a new mandate because very, very difficult decisions have to be made, he said, as the FNM prepares for its convention on Saturday where a new leader will be elected.

Minnis, who has indicated that he would not be contesting the leadership of the party, said many may still ask the question why was [the] election called.

We were determined to obtain that mandate so that we could make those difficult decisions and build a better country together.

Minnis said the party is in a difficult place, but we will come back even stronger, adding throughout our extraordinary history of half a century, the Free National Movement has weathered many storms.

Storms forge character. Storms remind us of our purpose. Storms remind us of what is essential. Storms build resistance. Our cause endures. No one election can extinguish our hopes and our dreams for the Bahamian people.

It is these hopes, dreams, and our many accomplishments that make the FNM an extraordinary political organisation. We remain the better party for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Minnis said, thanking Grand Bahama for your deep support and commitment to the Free National Movement throughout our history, during our last administration, and in the last election.

Grand Bahama is a source of strength, a source of hope, and a source of inspiration for the FNM. This is a difficult moment in our party. Still, we have much to be proud of. History will judge us better than the present moment because we gave our all during COVID-19.

He told constituents that they are patriots strong, hardworking, and resilient people and that Hurricane Dorian and other storms did not break you.

The pandemic has not and will not break you. Our election defeat will not break you. We have been down this road before. We will come back even stronger. (CMC)
