Carnival Is Building A New Cruise Port In The Bahamas, Why Its So Important – TravelAwaits

Posted: May 20, 2022 at 2:09 am

After several setbacks, the Bahamas is making a big comeback. Carnival Cruise Lines is breaking ground on a new ship terminal, positioning the island nation for a tourism comeback.

The new cruise ship port is being built on the southern part of the island, about 20 miles east of Freeport. The 369-acre port will be able to hold two large cruise ships simultaneously and will house Bahamian-operated stores, as well as a nature reserve and indoor water feature. The name of the port has not yet been announced.

Grand Bahamians have withstood life-changing challenges, particularly in recent years, says vice chairman of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, Sarah St. George. She describes the project as transformational in the true sense of the word.

Carnival Corporation owners of Carnival Cruise Lines first inked the new port deal with the Government of the Bahamas back in 2017, but almost immediately hit snags. In 2019, category five storm, Hurricane Dorian, hit the island and caused widespread damage. The next year, the cruise industry took a massive hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, however, plans are back on track.

With the start of this Carnival project, Grand Bahama is now on the better side of reaching its true economic potential, said the honorable Philip Davis, Prime Minister of The Bahamas. This investment will provide much needed jobs but will also signal new hope for the islands recovery.

Carnival Cruise Lines is currently the top visitor to the Bahamas. Its ships make numerous stops in Nassau, and the cruise line operates the private islands of Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays. Partnering with the Bahamian government solidifies Carnivals commitment to expansion on the island. Carnival plans to have its ships Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration make stops at the new cruise port, starting in late 2024.

Our guests already love the Bahamas, said president of Carnival Cruise Line Christine Duffy, and we are certain this new project will give them even more reasons to want to visit.

The COVID-19 pandemic hit the cruise industry hard, shutting it down completely. Carnival Cruise Lines was the first cruise line to restart its operations, sailing with a select number of ships at limited capacity beginning in July 2021. The final ship in the companys fleet set sail from Seattle in May 2022. Other major cruise lines, including Norwegian, Celebrity, Disney, and Holland America, are sailing in some capacity and have plans for a full re-entry into the cruise industry.

As cruising returns to pre-pandemic levels, heres a guide to help you decide the best cruise option, plus a look at our favorite cruises and how to enjoy a Disney cruise as an adult.

Bahamas will ‘fight’ EU, OECD on digital assets – Bahamas Tribune

FREE National Movement Leader Michael Pintard.

ByNEIL HARTNELL

Tribune Business Editor

nhartnell@tribunemedia.net

The Bahamas will likely have to fight the European Union (EU) and Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) to preserve its digital assets leadership, the Oppositions leader warned yesterday.

Michael Pintard, the Marco City MP and former Minnis administration Cabinet minister, told the House of Assembly that high-tax European states and their parliaments would like nothing better than to clamp down on The Bahamas ambitions to establish itself as a Fintech (financial technology) hub for crypto currencies, blockchain and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Speaking as the House debated reforms to the Digital Assets and Registered Exchanges Act, which will expand the Securities Commissions enforcement and sanctions powers to cover unlicensed and unregistered operators, he added that the Free National Movement (FNM) was prepared to stand with the Government in this fight and back any necessary response.

Warning that The Bahamas will face similar attacks to those that have undermined the competitiveness of its traditional financial services sector, Mr Pintard said: The problem that we are likely to run into, in Europe, parliaments are quite worried about what we are doing here.

While the European Commission has to-date voiced no concerns over The Bahamas digital assets drive, the Opposition leader said politicians in that region would likely view the countrys developing industry as a potential haven for operators who do not want to follow the law.

There are those in Europe looking at our jurisdiction and ways to clamp down on what The Bahamas is doing now, he said. Our jurisdiction has unfortunately been unfairly treated by the OECD and some of the parliaments in Europe, and some of the things we we were faced with in financial services we are likely to be faced with in digital assets.

We have to fight that same fight with digital assets because the parliaments are looking out for their interests, not our interests. We are prepared to stand with the Government in this fight. When we pursue innovative things that position us as leaders in the global community, we do not permit them to shut down any opportunities where we can succeed.

Kwasi Thompson, former minister of state for finance, said The Bahamas needed to focus on developing the necessary workforce for a digital assets industry. We need 10,000 [software] developers, we need 10,000 coders if were really going to make an impact in this industry, he added.

The Governments white paper, entitled The Future of Digital Assets in The Bahamas, seeks to balance signalling to crypto, blockchain and non-fungible token (NFT) providers that this nation is open for business with the necessary risk-based regulatory approach to protect the countrys reputation and the interests of investors/consumers.

Indicating The Bahamas eagerness to attract blue-chip operators of the same calibre as FTX Digital Markets, one of the worlds largest crypto currency exchanges, who wish to operate in a compliant environment, the paper lists multiple broad-brush goals and policy objectives that the Government wishes to achieve in building a sustainable digital assets sector.

Pledging to work with the Central Bank and private sector to enable Bahamians to invest in digital assets using Bahamian dollars, and thus overcome a key complaint of many locals, the white paper also promised to this year establish a Digital Policy Committee and Digital Advisory Panel to advise the Government on how best it can facilitate the sectors growth via legislative and policy initiatives.

The Committee will be headed by the Prime Minister, be charged with overseeing the attainment of the Governments digital policy objectives, while the Panel will feature industry and regulatory executives functioning in a capacity that will see them advise the former.

And, perhaps critically, the white paper also focused on enabling Bahamian entrepreneurs and workers to exploit digital assets opportunities by providing them with the necessary skills upgrades. It calls for a partnership between the University of The Bahamas (UoB), Securities Commission and private sector to develop crypto asset-related courses, certifications and degrees.

To help finance this, the Government says it is mulling whether to impose a development and training levy - sum and mechanism not specified - on the largest digital asset businesses to ensure The Bahamas can provide the qualified, well-trained workforce that can help attract other operators to domicile in this nation.

Kate Middleton & Prince William Held Hands in the Bahamas: TikTok – Marie Claire

Posted: at 2:09 am

The times, they are a-changing.

Where Kate Middleton and Prince William were once rarely seen being expressly affectionate with each other in public, images of them sharing loving gestures have become more commonplace in recent yearsthough not so commonplace that those moments aren't still newsworthy.

There's probably a case to be made for this being a deliberate choice, one that increases the Cambridges' relatability factor as their roles in the royal family evolve, though I'm not particularly qualified to make that case.

Back to the matter at hand: the matter of their holding hands on camera during their recent Caribbean tour (see what I did there?).

TikTok user Jimmy Rex was staying at the royal couple's hotel in the Bahamas when he spotted them in the lobby and captured a video. When posting the footage to the social media platform, he titled it the tongue-in-cheek, "Must be important people, 35 security guards with them at my hotel!" The hashtags he used in his caption confirmed that he knew perfectly well who they were, and was in fact making a joke.

In the video, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (in the yellow dress she wore on her last night in the Bahamas) are seen holding hands as they walk (presumably) out of the hotel, trailed by said security guards.

Rex calls out to them, "How you doin'?" to which the duke responds, "Hello!" The content creator then tells the duchess, "You look beautiful." She tells him, "Have a great holiday," and he returns the sentiment.

Back in 2016, royal etiquette expert Myka Meier explained to People why the Cambridges rarely held hands in public at the time (though it does sort of still stand these days). "The likely reasoning is more that while traveling on a tour such as the India trip, technically the couple are working representatives of British Monarchy," she said. "The couple are likely to show very little PDA, if any, to remain professional during their designated roles abroad." I mean, fair.

University of The Bahamas preparing for largest commencement class since pandemic – EyeWitness News

Posted: at 2:09 am

NASSAU, BAHAMAS The University of The Bahamas (UB) Commencement Ceremony that will be held next week is expected to be one of its largest since the pandemic, with well over 600 graduands who comprise the 2022 Commencement Class having completed their academic matriculation in an era of extraordinary circumstances.

And after a two-year hiatus on in-person commencement events because of the COVID-19 pandemic, UB will return to hosting its commencement activities on-site with the approval of health authorities.

However, a major difference will be the enforcement of heightened health measures to protect graduands, the University community, supporters of the Commencement class and members of the public who attend.

President of UB Dr. Rodney D. Smith said in an era marked by challenges and tumult, UBs graduands have demonstrated special strength and perseverance in the face of adversity and have remained focused on being prepared for a dynamic global society.

I am especially proud of the fact that the 2020 and 2021 Commencement classes, though virtual, did not allow an event that made the world stand still, stop them from pursuing their goals. They, like this class of distinguished 2022 graduands, have remained resilient and vigilant, Smith said.

Commencement Class President and Bachelor of Education major, Danavio Neely, expressed excitement at finally resuming the Commencement events in traditional fashion as students have been yearning for their time to shine.

Considering that this is the very first face-to-face graduation since the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a very exciting time for not only myself but the other graduates who make up this class, Neely said.

Personally, this milestone is one that I dont take lightly because this was a dream of my mother and she is no longer here and I shall continue to honour her legacy.

On behalf of the graduating class, we are certainly thankful to the University and especially the Ceremonies and Occasions Committee for being so instrumental in getting us this face-to-face ceremony. We cannot say thank you enough to all of the various faculty members and staff.

One of the highlights of the commencement ceremony will be the conferral of an honorary Doctor of the University degree, posthumously, on one of the architects of independence, Bahamian patriot and avid proponent of tertiary education the late Arthur Dion Hanna. The decision was made by the UB Board of Trustees, upon the recommendation of the Academic Senate.

Hannas daughter, Minister of Education and Technical & Vocational Training, Glenys Hanna Martin, will accept the conferral on his behalf and will deliver the Commencement address at the ceremony scheduled to be held at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.

The Spring 2022 Commencement Class comprises graduands who completed their academic programmes in Summer and Fall 2021 and Spring 2022. This years commencement events are being held under the theme, We Survived, Now We Thrive: Succeeding Against the Odds.

Events include the Teachers Commissioning Ceremony on May 24, the Nursing and Allied Health Professions Pinning and Awards ceremonies as well as the Baccalaureate Service on May 25, and the Commencement Ceremony on May 26.

For the UB-North Campus in Grand Bahama, events include a Baccalaureate Service on May 30, a Teachers Commissioning and Awards Ceremony on 31st May, and the Commencement Ceremony on June 1.

This years commencement events will also be the final for Dr. Smith in his capacity as President as his tenure ends at the end of July 2022.

The Commencement Class will join a community of more than 20,000 UB alumni who are making strides as leaders, change-makers, and innovators in industries across The Bahamas and the globe.

Graduands represent disciplines in Business; Tourism, Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Leisure Management; Nursing and Allied Health Professions; Mathematics, Physics, and Technology; Chemistry Environmental and Life Sciences; Communication and Creative Arts; English Studies; Education; Small Island Sustainability and Social Sciences.

Fans React To Deshaun Watson Taking Browns’ Offensive Players To The Bahamas Except For Baker Mayfield – BroBible

Baker Mayfield will not be on the Deshaun Watson Bahamas trip.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, Watson is treating members of the Cleveland Browns offense to an all-expenses trip to the Bahamas.

Unfortunately, Baker Mayfield, who is currently requesting a trade out of Cleveland, will not be a part of the Browns trip to the Bahamas to build chemistry before the upcoming season.

Via Cleveland.com

The trip will be similar to the Camp Mayfields that Baker Mayfield hosted the past couple of years in his hometown of Austin, Texas.

Although Mayfield is still on the Browns roster, its unlikely hell l make the trip to the Bahamas, a source said. The Browns are still actively trying to trade him, and hes still also rehabbing his surgically repaired left shoulder.

Fans had jokes about Mayfield being left behind during the Browns team-bonding trip.

Geraldo Rivera Describes A UFO Tracking Him ‘Everywhere He Went’ While Sailing In The Bahamas – BroBible

Posted: at 2:09 am

On Tuesday, the United States Congress held its first meeting on UFOs in more than 50 years.

This historic House of Representatives Intelligence, Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence, and Counterproliferation Subcommittee hearing, if nothing else, has encouraged more people to speak out on their experiences with UFOs.

One of those people who was inspired by the hearing is apparently Fox News reporter Geraldo Rivera.

During an appearance on The Five to discuss the congressional hearing on UFOs, Rivera admitted to having his own encounter with an unidentified flying object.

Ive sailed around the world, Ive seen a lot of clear skies. Ive seen satellites, which are kind of spooky, weather balloons, stray aircraft, Rivera told the four other panelists on the show.

The only time I ever saw a UFO, I was stoned on ecstasy, he continued.

After the laughter died down a bit, host Jesse Watters asked Rivera what the UFO looked like.

It looked like a great, big North Star, brighter than the North star, it was right on the horizon, replied Rivera.

Then I tried to avoid it, he continued. I steered around it

Fellow panelist and former NFL cheerleader Emily Compagno, who was more interested in Geraldo being stoned on ecstasy than his UFO encounter, tried to interrupt, but Rivera was undeterred and finished his tale.

It kept following me and and I went back the other way. It was right in front of me. It just tracked me everywhere I went.

Rivera now joins an elite club that includes Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus (who also may have been stoned), and Sammy Hagar (who claims to have vivid memories of being abducted by aliens) as celebrities who have claimed to have had encounters with UFOs. The truth is out there.

#TheBahamas, May 18, 2022 During a Communication in the House of Assembly, by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. Philip Davis, tabling an Audit

Report into the operations of the National Food Distribution Task Force and the National Food Distribution Programme, on May 16, 2022, he said that his Government had found it consistently difficult to obtain genuine answers, about operations.

In the case of the Food Programme, requests for credible documentation of how $53 million was spent have not been answered, Prime Minister Davis said. To be clear, documents have been provided, but they are not documents that answer the most important questions posed.

He continued: To make an analogy, if someone asks, How much did your car cost?, and the car owner answers, My car is blue, an answer of sorts has been provided, but not one of great relevance to the questioner.

In the case of the Food Programme, some documents have been proffered up, but they do not provide answers to the Bahamian peoples questions.

Prime Minister Davis said that the 138-page Audit Report makes for startling reading.

In the General Findings of the Audit Report, 18 categories of major deficiencies were noted, he said. These ranged from a widespread lack of record-keeping, and widespread inconsistences relating to the sums of money handled, to a complete absence of minutes being kept of meetings, agreements and actions.

In other words, although tens of millions of the Bahamian peoples dollars were being spent, not even the most basic safeguards were in place, he added. A government that speechified about transparency at great length and at every opportunity did not conduct even the most basic oversight of a major government initiative.

Prime Minister Davis said that the audit was astounding in documenting the failures of the government in establishing reporting and monitoring protocols, or internal controls. He noted that the Task Force could not provide the auditors with information that should have already been completed and readily available.

Even in the instances where information was provided, only aggregate totals were offered, with none of the supporting documents that would be critical to corroborate the figures, he said. Theres no back-up provided: no contracts, no cheques, no receipts and no bank statements to support the information. No evidence, in other words.

It is noteworthy, too, that some organisations concerned have still refused to provide any information whatsoever, he added.

Prime Minister Davis pointed out that, given the sums of money involved, the deficiencies are breath-taking.

Public Officers did not have oversight of the expenditure of funds, he said. Expenditure of millions of dollars remains unexplained and undocumented.

No audited financial statements have been provided, so information provided by the NGOs cannot be confirmed.

He added: Information Dashboards presented by the Task Force did not reconcile to the information provided by NGOs. So, for example, just to highlight the point, if the

Task Force is saying that they gave an NGO $100,000, and the NGO is saying they only received $80,000, whats happened to the difference?

In fact, numerous instances have been identified when the NGOs concerned did not account for the total amount funds received from the Government, Prime Minister Davis continued. As I said in the Mid-Year Budget, we uncovered $2 million that was sitting in an NGOs account. I am happy to say that money was then recovered for the Bahamian taxpayer. Are there millions more sitting idle in other accounts?

Prime Minister Davis noted that there was no consistent system of recordkeeping at the Task Force or NGO level; and it was simply not credible to believe that from May 2020 to October 2021, they were too busy to keep proper records.

And some of the records which were kept, raise even bigger questions. Why were such exorbitant fees paid for some services? he added.

Prime Minister Davis gave the example of one restaurant being paid $6 per box for the delivery of each food parcel. That, he noted, amounted to approximately $50,000 per month.

Why did they pay $6 to deliver a single parcel of corned-beef, flour, rice and the other very basic items they delivered to families in need? he said. The delivery cost would have been more than the food itself.

And to this day, despite numerous requests, two NGOs have still not provided any information at all, and combined, they received more than $10 million.

$10 million of the Bahamian peoples money, has simply vanished.

Prime Minister Davis also called on those with knowledge of the underlying facts to come forward. Those who had failed to provide answers and evidence still have an opportunity and an obligation to do so, he added.

We do not prejudge the circumstances we have uncovered, he said. We cannot say definitively whether we are looking at jaw-dropping incompetence or something considerably worse.

For now, I encourage the Bahamian people to read the Audit Report for themselves.

A friend of Johnny Depp's said the actor recalled blacking out in front of his children.

iO Tillett Wright, who was not present during the incident, said his kids were then "whisked away."

He said his friendship with Amber Heard began before, and lasted longer, than his with Depp.

Amber Heard's friend iO Tillett Wright testified Tuesday that Johnny Depp disclosed a time when he'd blacked out on an island in the Bahamas.

"He told me that he passed out face down in the sand while his kids were there and that the staff had whisked his kids away so that they didn't see it," Tillett Wright, a photographer, writer, and producer, said in a deposition that was recorded on March 10, 2022. Tillett Wright was not present during the incident and did not clarify if it occurred on Depp's private island.

The testimony was the latest in the explosive $50 million defamation case following Heard's 2018 op-ed insinuating that she was a victim of abuse. Though Depp was not named throughout the Washington Post piece, he claimed it ruined his career. Heard has countersued for $100 million and claimed Depp physically or sexually assaulted her before and during their 15-month marriage.

Tillett Wright said he'd known Heard since 2011 and eventually became friends with her.

Soon thereafter, he met Depp, became close with the pair, and briefly lived with the couple for a 9-month period between August 2013 and June 2014.

Tillett Wright added that Depp had a "misogynistic and cruel" side when he was under the influence of drugs but that he never witnessed Depp physically assault Heard.

"Johnny when sober was lovely and magical and very funny," Wright said. "Johnny when sober was incredibly lucid and imaginative and I felt a kindred connection with him," he continued.

Depp has two children Lily-Rose and Jack with his former partner Vanessa Paradis. Heard and Depp, whose relationship lasted from 2012 to 2016, do not have children together, but Heard welcomed a baby via surrogate in 2021.

United States Joins The Bahamas, in Commemorating HMBS Flamingo – US Embassy in The Bahamas

Posted: May 13, 2022 at 3:27 pm

On Tuesday, May 10, U.S. Charg dAffaires Usha E. Pitts and Major General Christopher Callahan of the Rhode Island National Guard joined Acting Prime Minister the Honourable Chester Cooper, Minister of National Security the Honourable Wayne Munroe, and the Commander Defence Force Commodore Dr. Raymond King at the Coral Harbour base in Nassau to commemorate the sinking of HMBS Flamingo off the coast of The Bahamas on May 10, 1980.

Charg Pitts and Major General Callahan also joined Acting PM Cooper, other dignitaries, and the families and loved ones of the fallen marines, and laid wreaths on the site of HMBS Flamingo Memorial Park at Coral Harbour Base in honor of the four young Bahamian Marines who gave their lives for their country 42 years ago: Fenrick Stirrup, Austin Smith, David Tucker, and Edward Williams. It was the first time U.S. representatives had the honor of laying wreaths at the memorial.

Acting PM Cooper noted in his remarks that the story of these great men is not only the story of our Royal Bahamas Defence Force, it is the story of the spirit of the Bahamian people. Like our nation, the courage and the fire displayed reflected the hearts and determination of the Bahamian people; a nation that was young but ready to face the challenges sovereignty would bring.

Major General Callahan also had the honor of presenting Commodore King with a recently passed Resolution whereby the State of Rhode Island officially commemorated May 10th, 2022, as HMBS FLAMINGO Day of Remembrance. The Rhode Island National Guard is the longstanding U.S. State Partner of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, and this gesture is yet another symbol of the enduring friendship between the United States and The Bahamas.

As part of Major General Callahans visit, he also discussed with National Security Minister Munroe and Commodore King enhancing womens participation within the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the future of enlisted leadership professional development. Advancing these lines of effort promises to further strengthen the ability of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force to serve the Bahamian people and protect their homeland.

Major General Callahan also had the opportunity to meet with Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for disaster preparedness, the Honourable Myles LaRoda; the Permanent Secretary assigned to disaster preparedness, Mr. Carl Smith; and NEMA Director Captain Stephen Russell. In anticipation of the start of the 2022 hurricane season, they discussed the Rhode Island National Guards anticipated support in working with the Royal Bahamas Defence Forces Disaster and Crisis Risk Management Units to better prepare for hurricanes and other forms of natural disasters.
