To cover pricey cancer treatments, a rural Georgia hospital automated its hunt for philanthropic reimbursement – FierceHealthcare

Wayne Memorial Hospital is a community hospital that recently launched oncology services for its rural residents.

While the facility is relatively small at just 84 beds and 500 employees, its one of the few options for the locals of Wayne County and its surrounding southeast Georgia communities to receive this type of care without driving an hour or two by car.

There are four counties that are contiguous to us that do not have a hospital at all. Prior to us starting our oncology services, patients were having to drive at least 40 miles and as many as 75 miles to get careand thats not something that you want after getting six or eight hours of infusions, Greg Jones, chief financial officer at Wayne Memorial Hospital, told Fierce Healthcare.

Thanks to a partnership with Savannah, Georgia-based provider St. Josephs/Candler, Jones said that Wayne Memorials oncology has exceeded expectations. In August, the hospital will be wrapping up work on a new building for its growing infusion services.

However, the community hospital and its patients were stonewalled when it came to paying for the high-cost, specialty treatments.

Roughly 17.5% of Wayne County residents dont have any form of health insurance, and those enrolled in Medicare or a high-deductible commercial plan frequently have trouble meeting the copayments.

Wayne Memorial operates a financial aid department that extends the treatments to these patients but, according to Jones, could only spare a single person to seek out and review eligibility for the philanthropic aid and rebates that would cover the costs.

A lot of [rural hospitals] lose money and fail, he said. Any type of financial mistake or misstep can cost the hospital its life, so we need to be able to get all of the reimbursement for our patients that we can.

The solution, Jones said, was a tech platform already in place at its partner St. Josephs/Candler. Developed by a Seattle-based startup called Atlas Health, the tool integrates with a hospitals clinical, financial and pharmaceutical systems to automate the end-to-end process of securing financial aid for patients with high-cost treatments.

We focus on this pod of a little over $30 billion in annual aid and basically connect the dots with matching the patients with programs, enrolling them in programs and then providing them all the reimbursement tasks in terms of claims and ordering drugs, Ethan Davidoff, founder and CEO of Atlas Health, told Fierce Healthcare. Patients can access care and not get saddled with a debt they cant paybut [it] also helps our health system partners remain solvent and run a smooth business operation.

Atlas Healths platformwhich was a Fierce Innovation Awards 2020 finalist and according to Davidoff already in use among a handful of large, nationally-recognized integrated delivery networksis designed to be an extension of an organizations financial aid department.

Prior to signing on, the startup will conduct an ROI assessment that reviews a years worth of claims data to show organizations the opportunity, whats out there across this $30 billion, how youre doing today [and] whats the delta, Davidoff explained. That process involves a turnkey sequel script developed by Atlas that a potential partner will run across its systems, he said.

We give the health system partner the code for them to run, install, export the data and upload securely to our SFTP server. That way the health system doesnt have to incur all this IT lift where theyre working backward and have to build all this custom code, he said. Once that converts to a partner like Wayne Memorial, most of the core data integration with their systems and modeling out those payers is kind of already done.

That onboarding process was seamless as could be for Wayne Memorial, Jones said and demonstrated a return within their first month of deployment.

According to the organizations, supplementing the hospitals staffed financial aid department with the automation tool led to a 75% reduction timefor clean claim submissions and a 50% time reduction for philanthropic aid applications. Jones also noted that his small hospital will now be able to provide an extra $1 million in additional care over the next 12 months, helping about 50 patients that would otherwise have been unable to pay for their treatments.

We didnt know all the different coverages that were out therewhat types of philanthropic organizations there were, what types of drug rebates, Jones said. Now, thats literally at [our employees] fingertips. They enter the information in and [the software] goes out electronically and searches that. I mean, somebody could spend hours on the phone for something that literally takes two minutes electronically.

While this type of automation is a particular boon for organizations with thin margins that cant afford to pay a lot of people to sit around do this work, Jones noted that larger groups would likely see a cost and time savings from automating their financial aid processes as well.

But just as important as the organizations short-term financial gainis the downstream benefits for patients and providers alike.

We have a fairly large population in our area that wont seek medical care just because they know theyre going to owe money for it, Jones said. Of course, that just ends up costing everyone more in the end [than] if people would just get the care they need.

So, being able to find this care and [show] were an established communitythat Hey, the hospital has a program that helps us find this and pay for it, and Im not having to pay anything for it? I think thats very helpful, and this type of service would work across any lines that a hospital would have not just oncology.

AI has been deployed in a number of ways by threat actors in recent times.

It is a vexing paradox that while emerging cyber technologies provide valuable benefits, their malicious use in the form of automated hacking, deepfakes, and weaponised artificial intelligence (AI), among others, prove a threat. Along with existing threats such as ransomware, botnets, phishing, and denial of service attacks, they make information security hard to maintain.

It will become even more challenging as more devices and systems get internet-connected, massive amounts of data that needs securing are generated, and newer technologies such as the Internet of Things and 5G gain ground. The democratisation of powerful computing technologies, such as distributed computing and the public cloud, only accentuates the issue.

Indeed, cyber threats can become a major, enduring threat to the world, says the World Economic Forum.

How real the threat is can be gleaned from the formation of the European Unions (EU) law enforcement agency, Europols Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce, facilitating cross-border collaboration to combat cyber crime by 16 EU member countries, as well as the U.S., Canada, and Australia, among others.

A Forrester study said 88% of respondents believe offensive AI is inevitable, with nearly half of them expecting AI-based attacks within the next year. With AI-powered attacks on the horizon, the study notes it will be crucial to use AI as a force multiplier.

Increasing automation, a reality of the modern age, provides advantages such as speed, accuracy, and relief from monotonous tasks. Perversely, it has also sparked off automated hacking or hacking on an industrial scale in the form of multiple and more efficient attempts that can cause massive financial losses and destroy the organisational reputation. They are completely automated, from reconnaissance to attack orchestration, and speedily executed, leaving little time for organisations to detect them and respond.

Here, publicly available information from websites of businesses and social media is collected quickly using automated open source tools to create convincing profiles for use by hackers as a prelude to attacks.

Organisations are implementing automated tools that reveal exploratory hacking and secure their digital footprint on the cyber landscape. Being proactive, including the use of decoys, counts for almost everything in mitigating and countering automated hacking by the distribution of attacks with different IP addresses and geo-locations. With such tactic, attacks are advanced and sophisticated by leveraging the power of cloud and to hide the real identity of the hackers.

A blend of deep learning and fakes, deepfakes are a misuse of machine learning (ML) and AI that use similarities in photos, audio, and video to fabricate synthetic photos, audio, and video to impersonate, threaten, misinform, defame, extort and blackmail. Deepfakes are more convincing than shallowfakes, which started with morphing, but the motives remain the same.

In 2019, a U.K. energy firm was defrauded using an audio deepfake before executives got suspicious and blocked more attempts at fraud. Understandably, organisations may not reveal they were duped, masking the prevalence of deepfakes.

Automated security tools and products incorporating AI, especially in forensic software, can detect and counter them, and along with cyber security protocols and employee education, are common protective measures against deepfakes which, using social media, gain vast reach and immediacy.

Here the use of AI is up against its misuse and one in which the time taken to launch new attacks is very little and the time available to counter them even less.

Weaponised AI self-seeks vulnerabilities in systems and networks. It uses concealed malicious code or intelligent malware to laterally move within the network, executes at specific times, or acquires system knowledge to vary attacks accordingly. It can generate legitimate traffic and create more noise in the systems in an organisations network, self-learn to evade security controls, and resort to AI or ML poisoning to resemble benign behaviour while unleashing malicious code. It can use AI to learn why previous attacks were unsuccessful, and even to evade AI-based monitoring solutions, or discover when networks are most susceptible to attack.

The use of AI to counter cyber attacks lies in modelling and monitoring user behaviour to flag deviations, in automated network monitoring and analysis and the use of AI-enabled solutions for anomaly detection. To counter AI-based attacks organisations need to know how these attacks work, not an easy task given the inadequacy of trained personnel in such techniques, or for that matter, in AI itself.

However, a combination of IT hygiene, recourse to authorisation and authentication and unified visibility and control of digital assets is a good defence against a cyber threat. The use of only necessary network assets and decommissioning the rest so as to expose a minimal digital footprint and continuous network monitoring also help. Clearly, battling against attacks that are gaining in sophistication by using AI means organisations must invest in AI-based solutions and products to detect and frustrate them.

Collaboration between human and digital workers can prove key in enhancing operations long-term.

Long discussions lauding technologies like artificial intelligence and robotic process automation are familiar to many executives. The problem is what comes (or doesnt come) next. For much of the last decade, talk of AI and RPA hasnt always made it beyond the boardroom, with the industry filled with a mixture of pioneers and organisations still struggling to create workable enterprise automation processes and solutions.

Then came the pandemic. The arrival of COVID-19 shifted business thinking about automation almost overnight. Remote working meant that technology adoption was something businesses could ill afford to prevaricate on. Automation found its moment during this period. Businesses accelerated plans to automate a range of areas, such as introducing RPA to streamline back-office administration or using advanced conversational AI bots to address customer needs whilst they were stuck at home during lockdown.

This shift from long-term strategy to operational imperative has encouraged the C-Suite to significantly increase budgets in this area. MassRobotics Explores Robotics and Manufacturing Automation Advances through Partnership with Procter & Gamble – Yahoo Finance

BOSTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / June 30, 2021 /MassRobotics, whose mission is to help create and scale the next generation of successful robotics and connected devices companies by providing entrepreneurs and innovative robotics/automation startups with the workspace and resources they need to develop, prototype, test and commercialize their products and solutions, announced it has launched a new partnership with Procter & Gamble (P&G) to collaboratively explore technologies around automation and manufacturing-related applications.

The goal of the partnership is to develop ideas to improve productivity, drive increased value for consumers, accelerate agility from more automation, and allow more flexibility in meeting the manufacturing deadlines of customers. Automation has become a top priority for many IT teams – ITProPortal

Automation has become a top priority for IT teams across the globe, according to a new report from IT and security management solutions provider Kaseya.

Polling nearly 1,000 IT professionals for the report, Kaseya found that automation is one of the three major projects organizations are focused on, along with bolstering security and improving operational agility.

Half of respondents rated IT process automation through endpoint management solutions as important, while another 47 percent described the ability to run automation scripts through their IT documentation tools as critical.

The solutions may be clearly visible, but that doesnt mean implementation will be seamless. In fact, most organizations are faced with three key challenges: cybersecurity and data protection, lack of IT budget and resources, and issues with legacy systems.

While compliance and legacy systems may be harder to overcome, the study found that almost half will allocate funds for automation in 2021.

As for cybersecurity and data protection, not understanding the dynamics of the relationship with SaaS providers is a major issue. Almost two-thirds (60 percent) of respondents said they believed their SaaS providers were solely responsible for data protection. In reality, the SaaS customer is typically responsible for providing redundancy in the event of system error or ransomware attack.
