Citizen unveils All-Parish girl’s soccer team – Weekly Citizen

Posted: March 31, 2021 at 3:59 am

Soccer is a sport that always has great success in Ascension Parish. That trend continued this past season.

In girl's soccer, two Ascension Parish teams reached the second round of the playoffs.

Of the three parish schools in the district, Dutchtown had the most productive season. The Lady Griffins went 16-4-1 during the regular season. This included an undefeated run in district competition, earning them an outright district championship.

Dutchtown earned the No. 8 seeding in the Division-I playoffs and hosted a first-round game against No. 25 West Jefferson. The Lady Griffins dominated, taking the game, 8-0.

They advanced to the next round, where they again hosted a game--this time against No. 9 St. Scholastica. Unfortunately for the Lady Griffins, this is where their season ended. They were defeated, 2-1.

St. Amant had another impressive year. The Lady Gators finished the regular season with a 13-5-1 record. This included a runner-up finish in the district.

The Lady Gators entered the playoffs as the No. 10 seed. They hosted Barbe in the first round and cruised to a 5-0 victory.

St. Amant then advanced to the second round, where it traveled to play seventh-seeded Northshore. The Lady Gators' season ended there with a 2-1 defeat.

The only team that didn't make the postseason was East Ascension. The Lady Spartans had their share of struggles in 2021. They finished with an overall record of 3-11, and they missed out on the playoffs for the second straight season.

But there were multiple East Ascension players that made the All-Parish team.

Alphabet’s CapitalG, Ascension back $140M investment in kidney care startup Strive Health – FierceHealthcare

Posted: March 20, 2021 at 3:21 am

Strive Health aims to slow the progression of kidney diseasewith an approach that combines advanced technology with high-touch patient care.

The startup landed $140 million backed byAlphabets independent growth fund CapitalG to scale up its model.

Redpoint also joinedcurrent investors NEA, Town Hall Ventures, Ascension Ventures and Echo Ventures to complete the round. The financing will support the growing demand for Strives innovative whole-patient solution for kidney disease populations, the company said.

Strive Health was founded in 2018 and is among a crop of tech-enabled companies looking to disrupt kidney care. Based in Denver, Strive Health hasraised $223.5 million in capital since its founding.

Strive works with patients' primary care physicians and nephrologists to manage their care while providing access to predictive analytics, telehealth services and education on home dialysis options. The company leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to offer patients direct and virtual clinical services, home dialysis education and training, and advanced care planning.

RELATED:Independence Blue Cross collaborates with Strive Health on late-stage kidney disease program

The company is focused on creating a new standard of kidney care to slow kidney disease progression, cut inpatient utilization, increase the adoption of home dialysis and significantly improve patient outcomes and experience.

The growing national spotlight on kidney care and the demand for value-based healthcare solutions has helped Strive more than double its presence in regional markets and grow its employee base by more than 600% in the last year, according to the company.

Currently, there is $410 billion of unmanaged kidney disease spend as the diseaseaffects 37 million adults and is the nations ninth leading cause of death. Kidney disease also disproportionately impacts people of color and significantly elevates the risk of developing serious complications from COVID-19. Despite dismal outcomes, only 10% of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are aware they have the disease, over half of late-stage CKD patients have not seen a nephrologist and roughly 60% of people who experience kidney failure do so in an unplanned way, demonstrating the need to reform treatment approaches.

The new partnership with CapitalG is expected to amplify Strives position as the leader in value-based kidney care through growth capital and unique access to Google and Alphabet expertise to support product and go-to-market innovation, the company said.

Chronic and end-stage kidney disease patients continue to be underserved by the current healthcare system. Strive has built an industry-leading kidney care solution that has the potential to transform patients lives, said Sumi Das, partner at CapitalG, in a statement.

After extensively studying the landscape, we determined that Strives technology, care delivery model, and team were best-in-class in the rapidly emerging kidney care segment. We are excited to partner with the Strive team to improve patient outcomes and significantly drive down healthcare costs," Das said.

According to Strive, the company'sartificial-intelligence-powered data science models predict disease progression with greater than 95% accuracy. Specially trained clinicians use these data to help patients slow disease progression and manage other avoidable health risks. If patients progress to kidney failure, Strive is equipped to coordinate transplants or flexible home dialysis. Strives programs have dramatically improved care quality and shown up to 29% reduction in total healthcare spend, the company reported.

Our focus is on providing great patient care. Technology is a critical aspect of doing this well, and our unique partnership with CapitalG will help us profoundly elevate our growth and technology vision by leveraging the insights and expertise of the best and brightest minds at Google and Alphabet, said Chris Riopelle, CEO of Strive Health, in a statement.

The company has scored partnerships with large payers and health systems. It joined forces with Humana to offer coordinated kidney care in Kentucky and Indiana. It also struck a partnership with SSM Health, a 23-hospital health system serving the Midwest.

Strive also works withBlue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina as part of itsBlue Premier Advanced Kidney Care program, which aims toimprove care coordination as well as member engagement and education around their conditions. Independence Blue Cross also works with the company to improve care for members living with late-stage CKD and end-stage renal disease.

The startup also has partnerships with hundreds of nephrology providers through new Medicare payment models and aggressive growth plans for the coming year.

New Ascension registrar of voters takes pay cut, but gets salary above state starting pay – The Advocate

Posted: at 3:21 am

GONZALES The new Ascension Parish Registrar of Voters is taking a pay cut, or receiving a raise, depending on the perspective.

Shanie Bourg will receive 7.2 percent less than what she received as an elections administrator at the Secretary of State's office. At $91,500, though, she will also receive 16.5 percent above the standard starting pay of $78,526 for parish registrars. The parish is kicking in an extra $12,974.

Bourg is replacing the longtime Registrar of Voters Robert Poche', who retired in late January after nearly 40 years on the job and with a salary of around $114,570 per year.

The lifetime appointee maintains the list of eligible, registered voters in the parish and helps ensure local elections run smoothly.

GONZALES Murphy Painter, a former top law enforcement official in Louisiana who is suing Ascension Parish's president and others over allege

Council Chair Teri Casso said the salary level was negotiated among Bourg and other parish officials.

"We came up with something that was not quite what she wanted and in keeping with her experience and ability to get the job done," Casso said. The salary can be reviewed later.

At the Secretary of State's Office, she earned $98,571.

The council adopted Bourg's pay rate Thursday with no discussion and no opposition.

Bourg said the office has a $30,000 surplus that could have been used to boost her pay further, but she said the office could use an extra position to improve the diversity of the office and to meet her goals to increase voter registration levels.

"I would rather take that money and try and diversify this office and get it where it needs to be," she said.

Diversity was one of the consistent questions of council members during interviews earlier this month of candidates that included a handful of Black candidates, though none became a finalist. Under Poche' in recent years, the office had been made up entirely of White women, except for him. Bourg is a White woman.

Ascension plans public meetings on sewer sale vote in April; 1st is Tuesday night – The Advocate

Posted: at 3:21 am

Ascension Parish government officials will begin Tuesday to roll out their proposal to sell the parish's sewer assets to a local company owned by a Jim Bernhard-founded private equity firm.

Voter approval is needed for the sale of public assets, and the measure will be on the parishwide ballot April 24.

Ascension would sell its package plants, force mains, trunk lines, land and other assets to the company, National Water Infrastructure, for $9.26 million and, in doing so, also save the parish $3 million a year spent subsidizing a collection of localized neighborhood systems.

National Water, which is owned by Bernhard Capital Partners Management, would ink a 20-year, non-exclusive franchise agreement with the parish and pay an annual franchise fee that will escalate as new customers are added, but start at $500,000, parish officials said.

Parish officials plan the first of a four public meetings 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Lowery Middle School gym on La. 1 South in Donaldsonville.

Subsequent meetings are planned at the following locations at 6 p.m.:

National Water, which is the successor to and partly owned by longtime local sewer provider Ascension Wastewater Treatment, will spend $200 million on a new regional treatment plant. The new plant would consolidate now-scattered neighborhood sewage treatment systems and reroute the treated wastewater to the Mississippi River.

The initial joining of the parish and National Water systems would total 19,000 customers in unincorporated eastern Ascension.

The agreement would not affect western Ascension Parish, but only apply to parts of the unincorporated east bank outside the municipalities of Gonzales and Sorrento.

The deal also would not affect people with individual home treatment system, parish and National Water officials have said.

Genshin Impact: Cecilia location and Ascension guide – App Trigger

Posted: at 3:20 am

If youre getting ready for the glorious return of the Anemo Archon Venti when Genshin Impact 1.4 releases, youll want to get all of his Ascension materials soon. One of them is a flower, the Cecilia. Heres where to find Cecilia in Genshin Impact.

There are only two characters in the game currently who need Cecilia as Ascension material: Venti and Albedo. You also need them to Craft Anemo Resonance Stones, which come in handy for when youre down to the last few Anemoculus.

Cecilia is a Mondstadt Local Speciality, so you can only find them in Mondstadt. Theres really only one place they tend to grow, so you wont need to do much scouring. You can find them all over Starsnatch Cliff and Thousand Winds Temple, where it looks like a big triangle on the map.

They grow in clusters of three or four, so be sure to grab them all. You can find them all over the mountain, with many of them at the edge of the cliff. Be sure to talk to the NPC who stands up there, as youll get some for free the first time you do.

If you have Klee, she can display the locations of Mondstadt Specialties. Your mini-map will display a hand icon when shes in your party.

These also count towards the Battle Pass objective where you can find 100 Mondstadt Specialties each week. They respawn two server resets (about 48 hours) after you pick them, so be sure to mark their locations on your map for easy harvesting.

Besides foraging, you can also buy them from Flora at the flower shop in Mondstadt. She has five Cecilia for sale every day for 1,000 Mora each.

If youre using Cecilia to Ascend Venti or Albedo, youll need a total of 168 to get them to their final Ascension.

Hooper uses strength to teach the sport he loves – The Advocate

Posted: at 3:20 am

Wade Hooper has been powerlifting for nearly 35 years, individually and teaching the sport he loves.

I got started back in 1987 at Bolton High School, we had two lifters on the team, it pushed me to stay with the sport and head to Louisiana Tech to lift under the great Dr. Billy Jack Talton, my lifting took off then, said Hooper.

Hooper is the powerlifting coach at Dutchtown High, and he will be taking his girls and boys team to state at the University of Louisiana at Monroe this weekend. Hooper was a collegiate champion in 1992 and 1993, he went on to be a Junior National Champion in 1992, a US champion from 1195-2008 and a World Champion in 1996, 2004, 2006 and 2011. He is the first lifter to ever win an IPF Junior, Open and Master World Title.

After graduating from Louisiana Tech, Hooper went on to coach at the high school level at West Ouachita High, before moving to Texas A&M and coaching at the college level.

I have been fortunate to learn from great coaches that have influenced me, Dr Billy Jack Talton and Jeff Douglas, said Hooper.

Hooper has now taken everything he learned from his mentors and has used that to coach lifters at Dutchtown High.

I moved back to Louisiana in 2003 and was hired by Dutchtown to teach math, it wasnt until 2019, when one of my students, Hayden Willis, convinced me to start a team at Dutchtown."

Willis was an outstanding lifter at Dutchtown, and he certainly had some influence from Hooper. Powerlifting has evolved into such a popular sport, names that come to mind is Steve Baronich (Woodlawn, Episcopal and Ascension Catholic), Tony Paine (Assumption), Joseph Ryan (Denham Springs) and a young coach, Josh Langlois, at Ascension Catholic.

Wade Hooper is one of the greatest lifters in the history of the sport, he is the best kept secret in powerlifting, he taught me while at Dutchtown and I had no idea he was a world champion, I am excited for him, he can take his lifters to the next level, said Josh Langlois of Ascension Catholic.

A sport that has grown so much in the last 30 years is now popular as the traditional high school sports, schools now have large teams with many lifters.

The elevation of the sport has to be credited to so many individuals, people from all backgrounds can compete, said Hooper.

Hooper and the Griffins head to state with momentum as several lifters qualified to compete at state in hopes of winning a state championship in D1.

Zane Rhodes in the 242-pound class has a shot to win state, his total is 1480; on the girls side, Mia Gonzales with a 900-pound total in the 165-pound class and Elizabeth Latiolais with a total of 725 pounds in the 148 pound class, we are excited about all of our lifters, said Hooper.

State will be very competitive with so many top schools competing include the normal schools and now several newcomers due to the popularity of the sport. The girls will compete on Friday and the boys on Saturday.

Hooper is certainly proud of his accomplishments, but I can see its all about the kids now. My main objective is to always focus on form and technique, I try to motivate them by showing them the passion that I have for the sport, said Hooper.

Hooper is known for his strength from his days in high school, college and national competitions, he should be known for the strength he instills in his lifters, they are the ones that are gaining physical strength and knowledge, being mentored by a local legend.

Owners of Ascension-based school bus company facing charges over fake insurance cards – WBRZ

GONZALES - The owners of a private bus company that provides transportation for several schools in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area face criminal charges after police found many of the business's insurance certificates were fraudulent.

Louisiana State Police's insurance fraud office was first tipped off after one of the buses owned by Scholars First LLC, which is based out of Gonzales, was involved in minor crash in Orleans Parish in 2019. The two drivers involved exchanged insurance information, but it was later discovered the certificate given by a Scholars First employee was fake.

The phony insurance card led State Police to investigate Scholars First, and investigators asked the company to hand over certificates of liability insurance. Police reached out to the insurance companies on each certificate provided to them and learned that the "majority" of them were fraudulent, according to a statement released Monday.

Investigators determined Michael Simon, 44, of New Orleans falsified insurance documents along with the owners of Scholar First, Melvin Williams of Gonzales and Jeramy Jackson of New Orleans, and gave them out to several charter schools.

Simon was booked on nine counts of computer fraud Sunday. Williams and Jackson are wanted on 23 counts of computer fraud each, according to State Police.
