With roads still flooded in Ascension Parish, residents find different ways of getting around – WBRZ

Posted: April 19, 2021 at 6:55 am

ASCENSION PARISH - Homeowners who live along the Amite River have been dealing with flooding since Thursday.

With roads expected to be unusable for the next couple of days, some residents have come up with creative solutions to get around.

Bo Mathern owns a house on Airport Drive. Because of the high water, he and his wife have been using his bulldozer to get to and from his home.

Dudley Marchand III lives right down the road from Mathern. Marchand's land has flooded so much that his front yard looks like a lake. Marchand said that he uses a boat to get around, leaving it parked in the garage for easy accessibility.

Residents also faced power outages Friday night when a tree fell on power lines and cut off electricity in the neighborhood. A DEMCO crew was still working on repairing the lines Saturday.

Even with all the flooding and the power outage, residents say they are still happy to live in the area.

"It's so peaceful and quiet back here it's worth a little bit of aggravation from the water," Marchand said.

Roofers slammed with business after hail storms damage property in Ascension – WBRZ

Posted: at 6:55 am

PRAIRIEVILLE - Residents are still assessing damage from back to back hail storms in the Prairieville area.

"That is the worst hail storm I have ever experienced," Rev. Anthony Bridges said, who lives in the Crestview area.

"I heard all that banging on the window. I never heard that before," Rev. Bridge added.

The two days of hail caused damage to Bridges' car. Now he's concerned about the house.

"I started worrying about my roof being damaged.Ijust put a new roof up, then my car windows are broken," Rev. Bridges said.

A roofing company answered calls several about damage in Bridges' neighborhood.

"The last two days it's been pretty busy," Kase Dupont with SOCO Roofing said.

DuPont says most of his calls were coming from the Prairieville area.

"The area we're in right now is a one (hail) inch impact zone, which is pretty significant as far as damage that will be causedto a roof," Dupont said.

Dupont says his workers won't be able to start repair jobs until next week, because they are still answering calls and inspecting hail damaged property.

LightCounting releases its China Wireless Infrastructure & Macroeconomics Update

April 15, 2021 -- LightCountings latest report provides an update on 5G developments in China, including macroeconomics, geopolitics, and technology. The predictions made last year that Chinas economy would be the only major one to grow in 2020 and that 5G rollouts would go as planned turned out to be true.

In fact, Chinese consumers could not travel abroad and spent their money at home, which kept the economy on track, and China over-delivered and exceeded its 5G base stations (BTS) target. China is now home to more than 70% of the worlds 5G BTS footprint, said Stphane Tral, Chief Analyst at LightCounting Market Research.

Our major findings in the report are:

- China was the only economy to grow in 2020 while the U.S. posted its worst year since the end of World War II. This also suggests that China remains on track to surpass the U.S. as the worlds largest economy in the 2026-2028 timeframe because COVID-19 reset the GDP race between the U.S. and China.

- China added more than 900k combined 4G and 5G BTS in 2020, driving total capex up by 11% YoY5G capex grew 327% YoY

- Chinas RAN market rose more than 30% YoY, and Huawei and ZTE commanded a combined market share greater than 75% for 2020.

- This year, we expect the same level of 5G activity as last year.

- In the mid- and long-term, our model shows lumpiness and bumpiness through 2026, which we predict will be the year China kicks off 6G.

- Overall, we expect no changes in the U.S. administrations stance against China and that further motivates Chinas 5G ecosystem to keep up with the 5G race, build up self-sufficiency and pave the way to 6G. But there will be still severe headwinds and challenges.

About the report:

LightCountings China Wireless Infrastructure and Macroeconomics report focuses on 5G developments in China, including macroeconomics, geopolitics, and technology. The publication date is scheduled a few weeks after the 4 services providers (e.g., China Broadcasting Network, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom) provide their interim reports so that we can gather many details about 1H21 and provide a 2H21 outlook and a 5-year forecast. This report also includes RAN vendor market shares and analysis.

Listen to Sufjan Stevens Lamentations, the second part of his five-part album – NME.com

Posted: at 6:55 am

Sufjan Stevens has shared the second part of his upcoming five-part album listen to Lamentations below.

The track is included on the second part ofStevens new 49-track album Convocations, which is due out next month.

Each of the five parts of the album are being released one-by-one in the run-up to the albums full release. Earlier this month, Stevens shared the albums first part, Meditations, before the Lamentations release was previewed earlier this week by new track Lamentation II.

Following them will be Revelations (April 22), Celebrations (April 29) and Incantations (May 6). The new instrumental record from Stevens will be released digitally on May 6 via Asthmatic Kitty. A 5xLP coloured vinyl edition of Convocations will follow on August 20.

Listen to the 30-minute Lamentations below.

The forthcoming project is comprised of five volumes Meditations, Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations and Incantations and sees Stevens reflect on a year of anxiety, uncertainty, isolation and loss through 49 new songs.

Stevens created the album in tribute to his biological father, who died just two days after his 2020 album The Ascension was released. According to a press release, each Convocations volume represents a different stage of the mourning process.

Reviewing The Ascension upon its release last year, NME said: The unashamed pop feel of The Ascension is regularly coupled with the sort of wiry electronics you might expect to hear in a Glastonbury dance tent at 4am.

These anxious instrumentals echo the albums uneasy outlook and fear of the future, and when they combine forces it often makes for an astonishing listen. The world is pretty shitty at the moment and its easy to feel helpless, but as the horror show that is 2020 continues to rumble on, The Ascension is yet another ample soundtrack to rage-dance to.

The Next Step in RJ Barrett’s Ascension – The Knicks Wall

Posted: April 15, 2021 at 6:55 am

RJ Barrett continues to develop as a two-way threat on the perimeter. His recent stretch of success suggests he could become an All-Star. The next phase in his game is an improved floor game and unassisted threes.

Its fair to say that the conversation has begun to change around New York Knicks forward R.J. Barrett over the last three weeks. The second-year swingman has seen a jump in his efficiency, modest evolution as a playmaker, and his defense, his most underrated skill, become respected. It seems as if the remodeled roster and the upgrade from David Fizdale to Tom Thibodeau have helped speed up his overall trajectory.

Since coming off the All-Star break, Barrett has averaged 19.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. The True Shooting percentage of 56.2% is buoyed by improved free-throw shooting (74.4%) and three-point percentage (42.3%). If Barrett is supposed to take the leap and move from the good, young wing to All-Star, these stretches need to happen. The fourth quarter and overtime stretch against Memphis15 of his 20 points with several clutch momentsneed to occur more often.

His scoring at all three levels has vastly improved, the conversation has shifted to the next steps. What are the next steps to make Barrett an All-Star-level player?

The one thing, however, in Barretts game that Im curious about is his shooting. Sustainable? As Barrett has been at or above 34% from the outside in each of the previous three months, I would like to think so. How he gets them, however, is interesting. This season, Barrett has shot 76-of-201 from outside, with 75 of them being assisted, via Basketball-Reference. Thats 98.7% of his threes coming off the hands of a teammate.

Expanding his floor game is crucial for Barrett to evolve and take his game to the next level, as it appears to be the only thing stopping Barrett from not only becoming a great player but a player the Knicks could consider leaning on offensively and building around.

The majority of Barretts threes come from the catch-and-shoot. More often than not, Barrett is the recipient of a kick-out pass to the corner after Julius Randle or Derrick Rose drive and absorb the defense. Randle superficially has been huge in finding the former Duke guard on the outside, using his ball-handling to extend the play further, use gravity, and pull a defender in before kicking it to Barrett. As a result, Barrett going from 33.8% on catch-and-shoot threes as a rookie to 38.1% as a sophomore has been instrumental in New Yorks success this season, providing a bit more stretch in New Yorks starting lineup.

But when it comes to his floor game, Barretts ability to create for himself lags behind a bit. Hes comfortable attacking the basketmeticulously drifting through the lane before exploding to the rim. Hes also solid when creating in the middle of the floor, capable of getting off the screen settling for a solid jumper. However, the next proper phase here is getting him the ball a bit further back and allowing him to assume some of those Randle possessions, allowing him to create from the top of the key.

Two players in a similar situation are Raptors forward OG Anunoby and Celtics swingman Jaylen Brown. Anunoby, fresh off of signing a four-year, $72 million extension with Toronto, is in the midst of taking his game to the next level as Toronto moves into its post-Lowry era. Still a bit reliant on creation to get him threes, Anunoby has taken baby steps in creating his own offense.

For all the comparisons between Barrett and Heat forward Jimmy Butler, Im starting to believe that Brown might be a more apt comparison. Coming out of the University of California, Brown was largely viewed as an athlete with shooting concerns. However, Brown had a much better feel as a shooter and creator, which made him the third overall pick and assisted in his development in each of the last four seasons. Now Brown, at 24, gives Boston a one-two All-Star punch with Jayson Tatum.

The idea of what does it look like? is a bit silly because all players and situations are different. However, as Barrett continues to feel a bit more confident with putting the ball on the deck, Brown is a good analog for what he may provide when he figures it all out. Brown is a versatile, do-it-all wing player who can punish you by attacking the rim while also offering a true outside threat if you leave him too much space.

In short: Barrett needs more operating out of the pick-and-roll, absorbing some isolation possessions from Randle and more pull-up and spot-up threes. So, how do we get there?

The idea behind Point Barrett is one. Last season, the Knicks had a brief spell where Barrett ran the show, and he looked good. As New York continues to figure out and shuffle through the point guard position, giving the ball to Barrett might not be the worse idea in the world. Like Butler, Barrett getting those lead dog possessions offers him a chance to expand his shooting further and create a pallet. Barretts 14.5% assist rate is a bit too low for someone with Barretts creative ability.

And I would be remiss if I didnt mention the one crux in Thibodeaus coaching performance this seasonusing Barrett with non-Randle minutes. Even with a bit more minutes of Barrett and the Bench against Brooklyn, the two have been largely tethered together in Thibodeaus lineups. Placing Barrett among a true rim-running big man like Obi Toppin and two catch-and-shoot perimeter players like Immanuel Quickley and Reggie Bullock could open the floor and make things a bit easier in giving Barrett lead reps.

When it comes to second-year forward R.J. Barrett, he might be underrated at the moment. His defense is solid, and key to a New York team ranked in the top 10 defensively for the entire season. While slated to play a secondary role alongside Randles creation, his passing has remained positive and the shot profile, scoring from the outside, the free throw line, and the rim, have all vastly improved. This 17-game stretch has suggested that Barrett is heading into year three of his NBA career with All-Star aspirations.

To do that, however, the next step in his game that needs to be ironed out is the shooting. Getting him to become a better shooter on unassisted threes, specifically pull-up threes and threes in isolation, would have him going from a good young player to someone who can serve as a top-three option on an excellent team.

Woman wants to reconcile with former Ascension sheriff’s detective accused in domestic incident – The Advocate

Posted: at 6:55 am

GONZALES The ex-girlfriend of a former Ascension Parish sheriff's detective accused of stalking and committing battery against her testified Monday that she and the onetime deputy were trying to reconcile and she wanted a protective order against him removed.

The woman asked Judge Jason Verdigets to lift the order against Timothy G. May so she and May could meet personally and try to restore their relationship without fear of violating his bail conditions.

Among their limitations, the order bars him from being within 100 feet of his ex.

Verdigets, of the 23rd Judicial District, said later that he was likely to grant the request but could not guarantee such an order without first seeing a formal motion and hearing any possible objections from prosecutors.

Verdigets made the announcement after a private sidebar with May's attorney, Hallye Braud, and Assistant District Attorney Leila Braswell to learn more, he said, about the order against May following the woman's testimony.

Braswell did not voice any immediate objections in court. A spokesman for Ascension District Attorney Ricky Babin didn't immediately return a call for comment late Monday morning.

The Advocate is not identifying the woman, who was named in open court, as an alleged victim of domestic violence.

GONZALES The Ascension Parish sheriff fired one of his detectives after the officer's arrest over a domestic dispute with a former girlfriend.

May, 44, of Prairieville, was arrested after an alleged domestic dispute with the woman on Jan. 5 and was fired, Sheriff Bobby Webre has said.

May had been with the Sheriff's Office for 21 years. In his last job before being terminated, May investigated property crimes.

Twice daily we'll send you the day's biggest headlines. Sign up today.

At the time of his arrest, deputies said that their investigation following that incident turned up that May and the woman had several previous domestic disputes that had not been reported.

Deputies said at the time that the relationship had ended in October.

May has since been charged by prosecutors on a felony count of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling and on misdemeanor counts of battery on a dating partner and stalking.

He pleaded not guilty to those charges on Monday at the Parish Courthouse in Gonzales a short while before the woman testified before Verdigets.

Under questioning Monday, the woman told Verdigets and prosecutors that she was not afraid of May anddid not fear for her safety.

Earlier, the woman also said that she was not in a relationship with May currently but wanted to reconcile with him.

May has been out on $25,000 bail since Jan. 6, online jail records say.

In a later interview, Braud said that prosecutors' offices in other parishes often agree to drop domestic charges against a person who has no prior criminal history, if the victim requests it.

Braud said her client has none but prosecutors in Ascension hadn't seemed willing so far to drop the counts.

Google Health and Ascension Are Piloting A Cross-Platform EHR Search Tool That Helps Physicians Locate and View Patient Data, Including Clinical…

Posted: at 6:55 am

Care Studio is designed to give physicians a single, centralized view of patients records that are spread among multiple disparate databases within a healthcare system

Lack of interoperability between electronic health records (EHRs) has been a thorn in the side of healthcare providersincluding clinical laboratorians and pathologistswho have to search multiple healthcare organizations databases to pull together medical records on individual patients. Google Health claims it may have the answer to the longstanding issue of siloed patient records.

Google Health and St. Louis-based Ascension, one of the largest healthcare systems in the US, have announced the clinical pilot of their new Care Studio platform. The software tool, according to the Care Studio website, leverages Googles expertise in organizing information to help clinicians find health record information faster.

The tools Clinical Search feature, Google Health continues, enables nurses and doctors to simply type what theyre looking for and quickly find the specific information requestedwhich might otherwise require significant time and effort to uncover.

Essentially, Care Studio complements existing EHR systems and enables healthcare providers to quickly search and organize previously siloed patient healthcare data stored on multiple EHRs within a health system. If successful, such a tool would clearly help streamline physicians workflows and shave hours off their daily patient research.

According to Google Health, Care Studio is a cross-platform EHR tool that gives clinicians a single, centralized view that brings forward a patients hospital visits, outpatient events, laboratory tests, medications and treatments, and progress notes.

Gathered data then can be visualized in tables, graphs, and other formats.

According to Medical Device Network, Google and Ascension originally introduced Care Studio to a small number of providers at Ascensions Nashville and Jacksonville, Fla., locations. They are now expanding the pilot to more nurses and physicians working in clinical settings.

Delivering Effective and Efficient Care

In Association of Electronic Heath Record Design and Use Factors with Clinician Stress and Burnout, published in JAMA Network Open, 73.1% of clinicians surveyed reported that inaccessibility of information from multiple institutions was identified as a major pain point in using EHRs and a factor associated with clinician stress and burnout.

In a blog post, Eduardo Conrado, Executive Vice President, Strategy and Innovation at Ascension, wrote, In current EHR systems, clinical information too often is buried in siloed records scattered across hospitals, clinics, urgent care centers, pharmacies, physician offices, labs, and other sites of care, making it challenging for physicians and caregivers to efficiently deliver coordinated and precise care.

When information is finally retrieved from these disparate EHR systems, he added, it is usually poorly organized and fragmented. Most clinicians work in an environment where data is incomplete, inaccessible, and delivered in disjointed bursts of information without context.

COVID-19 Accelerates Need for Improvements in Data Access

Conrado notes that the ability for clinicians to quickly retrieve and organize a patients complete clinical history is the essence of delivering effective and efficient care. He wrote that the once-in-a-generation COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for improvements in public health infrastructure, health technology services, and care delivery models and reinforced the significant impact that complex and often confusing EHR systems, and the fragmentation of patient health data, have on delivering effective care.

While the collaboration between Ascension and Google began in 2018, Conrado said remarkable progress was made on Care Studio this past year.

Conrado did not state how long the clinical pilot of Care Studio would last but emphasized that the technology will be enhanced with additional features and improvements based on feedback from pilot clinicians. Ultimately, the clinical search tool will be made available to all caregivers across Ascensions 2,600 sites of care, including 145 hospitals and more than 40 senior living facilities in 19 states and the District of Columbia.

In his blog post, Conrado reiterated that Care Studio complies with all HIPAA regulations as well as the Business Associate Agreement (BAA) that governs Protected Health Information.

Clinical laboratories should welcome this development. Any software tool or information technology that allows clinical laboratory test data to move across different EHRs will help interoperability.

Ascension Episcopal hands Loreauville first district loss of season – The Daily Iberian

Posted: at 6:55 am

YOUNGSVILLE Ascension Episcopal handed visiting Loreauville its first District 7-2A loss Thursday by a 12-2 margin in five innings.

LHS starting pitcher Garret Blanchard allowed eight runs (four unearned) on two hits in 1 1/3 innings. The sophomore threw 49 pitches with four walks.

It was out of character for Garret to struggle with his control, LHS coach Rob Segura said. An exception. Hell bounce back. Im not worried about it.

Hes going to be upset, but he should be upset a little bit. Hell move on. Hes going to be fine. He has had excellent control most of the time.

Ascension right-hander Preston Ocmand threw less than 60 pitches, yielding only three hits and two unearned runs with three strikeouts and no walks.

We obviously got beat in every phase of the game, Segura said. Thats my fault. I didnt prepare them well enough.

We just have to find a way to get better. We have to show a little fight and compete a little better.

Ascension (21-3, 5-0) shortstop Austin Mills went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, three stolen bases and three runs scored. The Tigers intentionally walked the sophomore on his fourth at-bat.

Ascension is a very good ball club, Segura said. Theyre probably the best all-around baseball team weve seen this year. Weve seen some teams.

The Tigers (13-7, 3-1) have faced Class 4A No. 4 North Vermilion (20-4), 4A No. 5 South Terrebonne, 4A No. 10 Breaux Bridge and 4A No. 13 Assumption.

They play the game the right way, Segura said of the Blue Gators. They do the little things. When their hitters have two strikes, it doesnt affect them. They were able to put the barrel on some balls with two strikes in the count.

Cameron Trahan, Luke Dowling and Devin Verret each had a hit for LHS. Trahan and Dowling both scored a run, and Hunter Freyou and Dowling each had an RBI.

The Tigers will be in action again today at Houma Christian (6-9, 1-2), which has been playing better than its record would indicate. The Warriors lost 4-3 to Ascension and 4-2 to Catholic High School.

Houma Christian has a good arm for sure, Segura said of their ace pitcher. I expect them to come out and compete. I dont know who Im going to throw tomorrow. Its possible that Riley (Marcotte) will be available. He last threw Monday at Highland Baptist.
