‘Times of crisis also bring about times of innovation’ – Daily Herald

Posted: at 4:17 pm

Q: Describe your company.

A: Ascension Saint Alexius is my home away from home, and we're proud to take on more fully the Ascension Mission in Illinois. Ascension is an organization that cares about ensuring we have people, sites of care and connections to care for the communities we serve. Our mission to serve goes beyond the hospital structure -- ensuring we're there during times of illness is what we do -- but we also continue to broaden our sights.

We build programs to connect our community to resources promoting wellness and good health. Our organization also welcomes ways to be innovative and sharing of ideas from all levels locally, within the region and nationally.

Q: Do you plan to hire any additional staff or make any significant capital investments in your company in the next year?

A: Here at Ascension Saint Alexius, we have an important renovation project underway for our Emergency Department to create a dedicated space to care for patients with behavioral health needs. Our current footprint doesn't allow us to consistently provide private space for those in crisis, and this new area will do just that. We anticipate hiring associates with behavioral health experience prior to project completion at the end of the year.

Q: What will your company's main challenges be in the next year?

A: As we transition to Ascension Saint Alexius and Ascension Illinois, it's important our community knows we remain here for them in their time of need. Our mission remains the same. Going forward, we'll need to ensure we're connecting effectively with our patients and community to let them know the high-quality, personalized care they've come to expect from us remains.

Q: What's the hottest trend in your industry?

A: The COVID-19 pandemic set back so many areas of our lives, but times of crisis also bring about times of innovation. In health care and at Ascension Saint Alexius, we're seeing a rising use of advanced telehealth services and developing artificial intelligence capabilities in the industry.

Q: If you had one tip to give to a rookie executive, what would it be?

A: Make sure you enjoy the work you do and balance work with personal time.

Q: Do you have a business mantra?

A: If you say you're going to do something, it's imperative to always follow through. Be careful not to overpromise no matter how well intended you are, because if you fail to follow through, you risk losing trust and fostering positive relationships.

Q: From a business outlook, whom do you look up to?

A: Keith Parrott, our Ascension Illinois Ministry Market Executive, has been leading our health system since the start of the pandemic, and his confident leadership and compassion for the many challenges over the last two years has allowed us to persevere. Keith communicated regularly in weekly written updates, as well as weekly systemwide huddle conference calls throughout the crisis.

These huddles allowed for bidirectional, real-time communications from system leadership and provided a means to relay back any challenges or concerns from the field. Because we were always in constant communication, we were all moving together in the same direction without confusion, able to best care for the patients we serve.

Q: What is one interesting fact about you or your company that most people may not know?

A: When our hospital opened up in 1979, the surrounding area was largely rural and, from time to time, cows would wander over, looking to get into our Emergency Department.

Q: Was there a moment in your career that didn't go as you had planned? What lesson did you learn from it?

A: There was a time I was part of a reorganization and it reminded me there are many talented people in health care. It's why enjoying what you do is so important, because sometimes unexpected detours can occur along the way and every path builds character and experience in the work we're blessed to do.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I really enjoy being outdoors, year-round, because there's always something fun to do whether it's enjoying nature or watching or taking part in seasonal sports, especially in northern Illinois.

Q: What book is on your nightstand?

A: Uh oh ... none!

Q: What keeps you up at night?

A: Lots of things, maybe I should have a book on my nightstand! Our hospital has great associates and leaders. Everyone is committed to quality work and care about each other and our patients. We work together through challenges, celebrate our accomplishments and have terrific teamwork. I'm fortunate and honored to be a part of this amazing team.

Q: If you were not doing this job, what do you think you would be doing?

A: Regardless of title and scope of work, for me, it's about making a difference and helping others struggle less through difficulties.

Q: What was your first paying job?

A: Working in a doctor's office as a receptionist.

Q: If you could put your company name on a sports venue, which one would you choose?

A: Da Bears!

I was in prison and He visited me – The Catholic Weekly

Posted: at 4:17 pm

Reading Time: 3 minutesMaximum security inmates in central west NSW create stunning chapel artwork. The Ascension of Christ painting and frame, created by inmates at Macquarie Correctional Centre. Photo: Corrective Services NSW.

Prisons are generally not known as places to find beauty, but that all depends on where you look, says Fran Schubert.

The Catholic chaplain at Macquarie Correctional Centre, a maximum-security facility for male offenders 50kms from Dubbo in the Diocese of Bathurst, says she often finds beauty in the faith of some inmates hearts.or else up on the ceiling.

One inmate has painted a version of Christs ascension into heaven, inspired by religious masterpieces such as Michelangelos Sistine chapel paintings and his strong faith.

From the perspective of the heavens it shows Our Lord rising up from earth with his cross, wreathed in clouds as angels wait to exchange his crown of thorns with a gold crown of glory.

One inmate has painted a version of christs ascension into heaven, inspired by religious masterpieces such as michelangelos sistine chapel paintings.

Another inmate fashioned an intricately-detailed gilded frame to match. Now the two-metre, 98-kilogram artwork adorns the prison chapel ceiling, amazing everyone who sees it for the first time.

The painter says he has been a hobby artist for most of his life, and that now at 62 he has taken it to a professional level in the last three years.

From a young age I was intrigued by magnificent religious artworks like the Sistine Chapel, he told The Catholic Weekly.

Ive always dreamed of painting a church ceiling and when given the opportunity here, I took it. I have a strong faith and saw it as a challenge and duty to other believers to make our house of prayer beautiful.

When arranging the composition I decided to show Christ rising up to heavens from earth simply because I was unaware of any other artist painting him that way. It turns out Salvadore Dali did just that, 70 years ago.

Ive always dreamed of painting a church ceiling and when given the opportunity here, i took it..as a challenge and duty to other believers to make our house of prayer beautiful.

I was careful to avert Christs eyes from the viewer ever so slightly so as not to infer that we are gods. According to Corrective Services NSW, art behind bars provides many inmates across the states prisons with a creative outlet, a constructive use of free time, the potential to earn some money for items such as art supplies, extra food and toiletries and the opportunity to develop skills they can use upon release. The opportunity that Macquarie Correctional Centre provides for inmates to enhance their healing and rehabilitation is evident in many various ways, said Ms Schubert.

Many of our men did not know that they could paint before entering Macquarie, where, here, they are encouraged and supported to express their inner most values and emotions.

It is inspiring to witness their spiritual and emotional healing and growth.

The painter of The Ascension of Christ is inspired by Renaissance artists such as El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens and Guiseppe Cesari and spent about 100 hours over 18 months to complete his masterpiece.

The most joy I get from this work is when new worshippers walk in to the chapel and look up for the first time. That look makes it all worthwhile, he said.

I always thank God for blessing me with a useful skill.

The artist who crafted the frame said his influences include the work of Leonardo Da Vinci, Alberto Giacometti, Edvard Munch and William Blake.

Designing a frame is essentially the same process as painting; research, design and build, he said. The finished frame really sets off the painting of Christ and lifts the whole chapel.

Being with Jesus in jail

The school of hope

The Northeast Valley Consortium, made up of 5 Lutheran churches (Christ the Lord, New Journey, New Covenant, Living Water and Ascension) was created in response to the Afghan crisis last fall. Their mobilization of support for Afghan families coming to Arizona has been humbling to witness. The consortium gathered enough furniture to set up 18 apartments for newly arrived families. North Vermilion captures quality road win over Ascension Episcopal – The Advocate

Posted: at 6:23 am

The North Vermilion Patriots knew they were facing a top pitcher when the reigning Class 4A champions learned that LSU-Eunice commitment Logan Overton was getting the start for Ascension Episcopal.

The Patriots' strategy, which was patience at the plate, paid off in a 9-1 nondistrict win in Youngsville.

"I thought we came out and played a pretty good game against a quality opponent," Patriots coach Jeremy Trahan said. "We faced a good arm in Overton.

"We grinded out some at-bats and drove his pitch count up early. We executed and did some things well to scratch some runs across and get him off the mound early."

The Patriots scored two runs in both the second and third inning off Overton. Two of the runs were earned. The Patriots (26-2) scored their first two runs without a hit. The only ball put into play against Overton until the third inning was a sacrifice bunt by Braxton Savant.

North Vermilion (26-2) managed only two hits against Overton, who struck out six in three innings, but the Patriots took advantage of five walks, two hit batsmen and four errors.

"We started off the year facing lefty Jake Brown (junior LSU commitment) from Sulphur, so we knew what the velocity was going to look like from Overton," Patriots junior Tyson LeBlanc said.

"We knew what we had to do to work his pitch count and get him out of the game because we didn't want to see 90 mph the whole game. It helps us to not see that the whole game."

LeBlanc (7-0, 0.71 ERA) pitched a complete-game, four-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks. Blaise Blancher broke up LeBlanc's shutout with a towering solo home run to right field in the seventh inning.

"I wasn't phased. I used to play with Blancher, and he got a good piece of that ball. I tip my cap to him," said LeBlanc, who helped his cause with a double and a two-run homer.

LeBlanc, who bats third in the lineup, is hitting .476 with 35 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Leadoff hitter/shortstop Lane Patin (.380, 18 SBs), clean-up hitter John Touchet (.426, 0.00 ERA) Brandt Fontenot (.427, 18 SBs), Camden Breaux (.337, 18 SBs) and Cooper David (.309, 13 SBs) have all been productive.

"Tyson was our No. 2 starter at pitcher last year, but we're better defensively with him at second base," Trahan said. "We haven't had to throw him as much as last season."

The Patriots have great pitching depth with Aiden Leonard (6-0, 0.72 ERA), Allen Johnson (4-1, 2.50 ERA), Cole Veronie (5-1, 1.18 ERA) and Savant (two saves, 0.65 ERA) joining LeBlanc and Touchet, who went 11-0 last year but has pitched sparingly as a senior because of minor injuries.

"It's a good luxury to have when four or five guys are capable of starting at any time," Trahan said.

"This was a big game for us. I thought we played well in all phases of the game. We've played consistently all year. We haven't really been up or down. I don't think we've hit how we're capable, but we've pitched well all season. That's what's carried us."

Overton and Carter Breaux each hit a double for Ascension Episcopal (19-5), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped with six games remaining in the regular season.

"Jeremy does a good job," Blue Gators coach Lonny Landry said of the North Vermilion coach. "They play solid. They play hard. They play the right way. It teaches you that you have to play clean baseball because they're going to play clean baseball."

Special Olympics Time Trial Run in Ascension returns after 2 years – WGNO New Orleans

Posted: at 6:23 am

GEISMAR, La. (BRPROUD) The Special Olympics Time Trial Run in Ascension is back after taking a two-year break.

I liked being a star at the race, said Joshua Maruschak, an athlete in the race.

These students, this is their Super Bowl, said event coordinator Chelsea Poche.

Over 100 individuals in primary, middle, and high school with physical and mental disabilities from Ascension Parish joined together to compete in this race and for a chance to compete in the state race in Hammond.

When asked how did this event make him feel, player Quinton Holmes said, AWESOME! Awesome, cool, and pretty good.

They are celebrated and they get to showcase their capabilities, Poche said. So, we are all here cheering them on.

Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Weber says this is not only big for athletes but for him as well.

It does us better than it does the kids. I mean, to see the smile on their faces, that should warm our hearts because its really encouraging, said Weber. They teach us lessons, sometimes, right?

Community helpers say the event helps them with sportsmanship, camaraderie, and confidence.

Community buddy Michael Stewart said, We get to take them and just let them experience like normal everyday activities because they deserve to experience these kinds of things every day just like we do because they are normal just like us.

Players from this event say they had a blast. Ascension Parish has plans of keeping this going for years and years to come.

City of Donaldsonville places three on All-State team – Donaldsonville Chief

Posted: at 6:23 am

Just recently, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association released its All-State basketball teams, and three players from the city of Donaldsonville made the cut.

Two Donaldsonville Tiger standouts made the Class 3A squad, and one Ascension Catholic boys player made the Class 1A team.

In 1A, senior Bulldog guard Demarco Harry was named to the LSWA All-State second team. Harry averaged 23 points per game this past season.

Harry helped the Bulldogs capture the District 7-1A championship in 2021-22, and they finished the regular season on an eight-game winning streak.

Ascension Catholic earned the No. 7 seed in the Division-IV playoffs. The Bulldogs went on to host a first-round playoff game.

In that contest, Ascension Catholic defeated No. 10 River Oaks, 73-63. That pushed them through to the state quarterfinals for the first time in three years.

Ascension Catholics season then ended with a loss to second-seeded Calvary Baptist, the eventual Division-IV state runner-up.

The Bulldogs finished the year with an overall record of 17-12.

In addition to being named second-team All-State, Harry was also named the District 7-1A MVP.

The LSWA named Calvary Baptists LaBree Williams as the Class 1A Outstanding Player. Williams averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game in helping lead his team to a state runner-up finish.

Southern Labs Harold Boudreaux was named the Class 1A Coach of the Year. He led the Kittens to the Division-IV state championship.

On the LSWA Class 3A All-State squad, Donaldsonville senior forward Troy Cole was named to the second team. Cole averaged 17 points per game this past season.

He is a Blackburn College signee.

Also, Donaldsonville senior point guard Lawrence Forcell was named All-State honorable mention.

Forcell and Cole helped lead Donaldsonville to a 27-4 record during the regular season, which included an undefeated run in league play that resulted in a District 9-3A championship.

The Tigers also carried a 10-game winning streak into the playoffs. That helped them earn the No. 4 seeding in the Class 3A postseason.

Donaldsonville continued its impressive run in the playoffs.

In the opening round, the Tigers trounced No. 28 Mamou, 94-53. In round two, they rolled past 13th-seeded Frederick A. Douglas, 63-39.

And in the state quarterfinals, Donaldsonville pulled away from fifth-seeded Iowa, 62-50, to punch its ticket to LHSAA Boys Marsh Madness for the first time since 2014.

Unfortunately, the Tigers memorable run ended in the state semifinals. Donaldsonville was beaten, 70-45, by top seed and eventual state champion Madison Prep. It was the Chargers second straight 3A state championship victory.

Donaldsonville ended the season with an overall record of 30-5.

Madison Prep center Percy Daniels was named the Class 3A Outstanding Player. The Seton Hall signee averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and nearly six blocks per game during the Chargers state title run.

The LSWA Class 3A Coach of the Year was Erroll Gauff of Archbishop Hannan, who led his team to the Division-II state title.
