Advance Review: ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Season 17: Gold Star Case Breaks The Mold – Fangirlish

Posted: June 6, 2024 at 8:50 am

Typically, wed say its difficult to review a season of a show based on only a couple of episodes, but with Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17, we can be pretty confident in saying this ones going to be a wild ride. Admittedly, at least part of our confidence comes from being longtime viewers and knowing this cast is always going to deliver no matter what. On the other hand, its precisely because we know the first 15 seasons procedural formula so well that we can say, without a doubt, that this season totally breaks the mold.

We might have started to play with, or even chip away at, the formula during last seasons Sicarius case. But something about Gold Star just feels like its going to go above and beyond even that. Its actually a positive that, after watching so many procedurals, we truly have no idea where Criminal Minds: Evolution is trying to lead us. The new season certainly lets us know, pretty quickly, that whatever Gold Star refers to, theres some kind of major, high-up connection. And that would kindahave to be true for no spoilers here since both are in the trailer the FBI Director and Voit to get in on the action.

Ok, so. Here are some thoughts:

The first two episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17 release on Thursday, June 6 on Paramount+. After that, the remaining episodes in the 10-episode season will release weekly on Thursdays.

Denmark Euro 2024 squad guide: A lack of evolution fuels doubts hanging over Hjulmand’s side – The New York Times

Posted: at 8:50 am

Denmark reached the semi-finals of the previous mens European Championship three years ago, where they took England to extra time, but heading into this summers tournament, several nagging concerns dangle over the heads of coach Kasper Hjulmands charges

Kasper Hjulmand has been in the job almost four years and is now leading Denmark to what will be, slightly surprisingly, their first back-to-back European Championship appearances since they competed in the 2000 and 2004 editions. However, his popularity is on the wane and the mood surrounding him is not what it was back in 2021.

Denmarks progress through to the semi-finals of those Euros certainly occurred under exceptional circumstances following Christian Eriksens cardiac arrest during their opening group match on home turf in Copenhagen, but it also created a swell of goodwill around the team which would actually flow into Danish football as a whole.

Today, nobody doubts Hjulmands ability as a coach, but there is a conversation about whether hes getting the absolute most out of a talented generation. Are older members of the squad being given too much game time? Are their likely successors being afforded too little? And is Hjulmand remaining too loyal to players who are not featuring regularly enough for their clubs?

The situation is hardly toxic nobody is demanding Hjulmand be dismissed but their qualification campaign was hugely uninspiring (there were losses to Kazakhstan and Northern Ireland, though a 2-1 win against San Marino might have been the low point) and concerns over a lack of evolution are beginning to gather pace.

How to follow Euro 2024 onThe Athletic

This should have been Celtics Matt ORiley and his omission will cause some disappointment.

Alexander Sund-Nielsen is an analyst for Copenhagen-based outlet Kvart i Bold. He says of ORiley, who was born in London and qualifies for Denmark via his mother, All we hear is how great hes done at Celtic and theres bewilderment why he hasnt been called up more. He is a good example of someone everyone wants to see in the squad but hasnt been regularly because of the old gang.

ORiley is a really intriguing playmaker and goalscorer, but he did not make the cut. And that does not leave many young players to choose from here. In fact, only two of the 26-man squad are 21 or younger (compared to seven 30 or over, with an eighth leaving his twenties before their first game of the tournament a week on Sunday) and one of those two, Rasmus Hojlund, plays for Manchester United, so hardly counts as an up-and-comer.

There is not a single player from the domestic Superliga, either, so it is difficult to see anyone really emerging under the Euros lights.

Andreas Skov Olsen maybe? He has just completed the most productive season of his career with 34 goal contributions (scoring 26 times in all competitions), reaching double figures for league goals for the first time since arriving at Belgiums Club Bruges in January 2022. He is still 24, which seems strange given how long he has been around.

At his best, theres an ambition and regality to the way Olsen carries possession forward; he is a very optimistic player. He also strikes the ball beautifully with his left foot and has the kind of quality that people can fall for during international tournaments.

The plus side of the continuity for which Hjulmand is criticised is a squad full of players familiar with each other: particularly in defence and midfield. Kasper Schmeichel and Simon Kjaer were doubts for the tournament having withdrawn from recent squads but are in the 26, and there is huge experience elsewhere Joachim Andersen, Joakim Maehle, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Jannik Vestergaard so the Danes will possess a tough centre against group opponents Slovenia, England and Serbia.

In attack, there is probably too much dependence on Hojlund (seven goals in qualifying), who started to score more frequently for United in the second half of his first English season but is still not ready to assume that sort of responsibility at international level.

Another issue is a reliance on players who are not playing regularly for their clubs.

Eriksen, another Dane at Old Trafford, is the obvious one, but Hojbjerg had a peripheral role for Tottenham last season and while he did start to appear in the Premier League more often towards the end of the campaign, Mikkel Damsgaard has also had a couple of disrupted years with Brentford.

Those with long memories will recall Maehle tweeting Vi skal ikke hjem, vi skal videre when Denmark spanked Russia 4-1 in the group stage of the previous Euros three years ago.

And, because of the circumstances around that game and the euphoria it generated, many will also remember the snippet of Danish-language commentary that did the rounds, when the same phrase was used after Andreas Christensens blistering finish to make it 3-1 with 10 minutes to go.

Vi skal ikke hjem, vi skal videre.

So, what does that mean?

Roughly: Were not going home, were going further!

Its a line from a cult Danish 1970s film called The Olsen Gang In Jutland, which is a madcap adventure story about a hunt for gold in Germany after the Second World War which goes repeatedly wrong but carries on regardless. YouTube it. Youll get the picture.

And look out for that one again this summer if the Danes do well again.

Sund-Nielsen says that expectations are more muted now than they were for the World Cup (Qatar 2022 Denmark finished bottom, with one point and one goal, in a group containing France, Australia and Tunisia). Based on the qualification, theres little reason to be overly optimistic. (But) Crashing out in the group will be a disappointing finish. I think the bare minimum expectation is getting out of the group. I dont think anyone expects more than that, to be honest.

So for achievement, theres little expectation. But for the tournament itself, theres a lot of excitement. Qatar was never popular and with Germany so close and beer being allowed theres a whole different excitement about this one. No one is talking about boycotting anymore (as happened in Denmark with Qatar, due to the host nations human-rights record) but just getting excited to spend the summer in Danish shirts. The mood is great although with more pessimism about their performance than weve had in recent tournaments.

Personally, I dont see us as a force to be reckoned with this year. The team needs a new generation of energy and leadership and it will inevitably be something that has to happen after the Euros.

Breaking Evolution’s Rules: Scientists Uncover Surprising Reemergence of Once-Lost Biological Traits – SciTechDaily

Posted: at 8:50 am

Recent research on stick insects demonstrates that genes related to lost traits may be preserved over evolutionary time scales due to their multiple roles in biological processes, allowing for the potential re-emergence of these traits. This study sheds light on the complex genetics of trait preservation and re-emergence, pointing to broader implications for evolutionary biology.

Traits can disappear through evolution if they become unnecessary or too resource-intensive to sustain. Its commonly thought that the genes associated with these traits will also deteriorate over time, potentially preventing the traits from reappearing. However, there are numerous examples in nature of once-lost traits reappearing in descendent lineages.

According to Giobbe Forni, a Research Fellow at the University of Bologna, Mapping the presence and absence of traits onto a species tree suggests that some traits may have been lost in the lineages leading to extant species and then subsequently reinstated. Wings in stick insects are considered one of the more iconic instances of this evolutionary process.

This suggests that the genes associated with these traits might be conserved, possibly for millions of years. However, there has been limited research on the molecular basis of this re-emergence, which means the mechanisms responsible for preserving these genes remain largely speculative until now.

In a new study published in Genome Biology and Evolution, Forni and his colleagues shed light on another complex trait that has been lost in some stick insectsthe production of males. Loss of the ability to produce males results in populations of only females, which reproduce by parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction. The study reveals that genes that are highly connected in regulatory networks and involved in multiple biological processes may be maintained long after a trait is lost, providing a potential avenue for trait re-emergence over long evolutionary time scales.

A stick bug.

In the new study, Forni and his co-authors Barbara Mantovani, Alexander S. Mikheyev, and Andrea Luchetti performed a comparative analysis of three species of stick insects in the genus Bacillus. While Bacillus grandii marettimi populations are composed of males and females that reproduce sexually, Bacillus atticus populations have lost the ability to produce males, comprising only females that reproduce by parthenogenesis. A third species, Bacillus rossius, includes both sexual populations and parthenogenetic populations that have lost the ability to produce males. By studying the fates of genes involved in male reproduction in these three species, the authors sought to investigate the extent to which genes are preserved after trait loss and the potential mechanisms driving this preservation.

The researchers first identified gene networks whose expression was correlated with either male or female reproduction in the sexual species B. marettimi and then evaluated the same genes in B. atticus and B. rossius. Surprisingly, male-related genes exhibited no signs of weakened selection or accelerated evolution compared with female-related genes in the parthenogenetic species. Furthermore, male-related patterns of gene expression were partially preserved across both parthenogenetic species.

Delving deeper, the researchers found that genes in female-related networks were primarily expressed in female reproductive tissues, while those in male-related networks were expressed in male and female reproductive tissues, including both sexual and parthenogenetic females. This suggests that male-related genes may also play roles in female reproduction. The involvement of a gene in multiple biological processes is known as pleiotropy, and this phenomenon may explain the preservation of male-related genes in these parthenogenetic stick insects, as previously hypothesized.

Moreover, the authors found that genes that were highly connected to many other genes in the network were more likely to be expressed in the reproductive tissues of parthenogens, suggesting that a genes network connectivity may also influence its gene preservation after trait loss. Taken together, these findings indicate that the molecular ground plan of the once-lost male reproductive process may persist due to pleiotropic effects on other traits, explains Forni. Different genes may undertake different trajectories of preservation and decay depending on the level of pleiotropy within the gene regulatory network.

This study not only sheds light on genetic architecture persistence after trait loss but also offers a potential glimpse into the emergence of rare males and cryptic sex (i.e. episodic generation of males and sexual reproduction), which have been observed in an increasing number of lineages that were thought to have lost the ability to produce males long ago. This opens up new potential avenues for research, with implications that may reach far beyond stick insects.

Looking at how widespread genetic preservation after trait loss is on a larger scale remains fundamental. Although the Bacillus species complex offers a nice framework to address these issues, it would be useful to analyze a larger species complex where multiple transitions between reproductive strategies have occurred, notes Forni. While it is often necessary to rely on model species to discover and dissect biological processes, it is even more important to test our hypotheses in a wider context. This will be possible only if we dedicate more effort to observing and analyzing the amazing diversity of organisms and their intricate adaptations.

‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Gets a Big Update Ahead of Season 2 – Collider

Posted: at 8:50 am

The Big Picture

Great news for fans of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU): Criminal Minds: Evolution has been officially renewed for a third season at Paramount+. This renewal comes just one day before the highly anticipated premiere of Season 2, set to debut with a double episode drop on June 6, followed by new episodes every Thursday. The new season picks up with the BAU diving into the deadly mystery of "Gold Star." As the team unravels the conspiracy, they encounter an unexpected complication when serial killer Elias Voit (played by Zach Gilford) negotiates a deal that brings him into federal custodyright in the BAU's own territory.

The first season ended dramatically with Voit revealing potential knowledge about Gold Star. In a shocking turn, Director Bailey (Nicholas DAgosto) releases Voit, but during a deal attempt, Voit kills Bailey. Now in custody in the FBI building, Voit remains a threat.

Showrunner Erica Messer explained in an interview with TV Line, This season we get to play into probably his greatest weapon, which is his mind. He gets to really flex that in front of the team. Weve never been able to have a killer in custody like this, somebody that we have to consult with. It is an evolution of what our heroes have had to do in the past.

Messer continued, I feel like Elias has a Plan A through Z. We saw in the finale that he had his familys [fake] identities all set up, he was lying to them saying, I got caught up with bad guys, its not that Im a bad guy. That was his plan let me get away and get my family safe and Ill lay low for as long as I possibly can. And then when he realized [the BAU] was closing in on him, thats when he said Gold Star to Doug Bailey.

Season 2 boasts a cast featuring original Criminal Minds stars Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Ryan-James Hatanaka, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster. The season also includes notable guest stars such as Felicity Huffman, who will portray Dr. Jill Gideon, the ex-wife of Mandy Patinkin's character, Jason Gideon. Additional guest stars include Clark Gregg, Liana Liberato, Paul F. Tompkins, Tuc Watkins, and Brian White.

Criminal Minds: Evolution acts as a continuation of the original Criminal Minds series, which enjoyed a successful 15-season run on CBS before concluding in 2020. The first season of Evolution premiered on Paramount+ in 2022, reviving the beloved crime procedural with a fresh twist and darker undertones.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and exclusive content on Criminal Minds: Evolution and other Paramount+ series.

With only hours to go until Paramount+'s Criminal Minds: Evolution returns, the team previews the new season and we have new images to share.

|

With less than a day to go untilParamount+'s Criminal Minds: Evolution was set to return for a new season, the streaming service announced that they wanted more. In this case, that means a third season of the hit procedural series with production set to get underway later this year. But let's not lose focus on the here and now, people. In the wake of last season's shocking finale, the upcoming season picks up as the FBI's elite team of profilers investigates the deadly mystery of "Gold Star." As the conspiracy unfolds, the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is met with an unexpected complication when serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) negotiates a deal that transfers him to federal custody in the BAU's own backyard. Before the new season gets underway and in honor of the show's great news we have a new image gallery to pass along. In addition, the cast, showrunner Erica Messer, and EP Breen Frazier preview the new complex cases, personal dilemmas, and in-depth investigations that viewers can expect.

With the streaming series return set for this Thursday with S17E01: "Gold Star" and S17E02: "Contagion," here's a look at the team behind Paramount+'s Criminal Minds: Evolution offering viewers some clues to what's to come:

The streaming series stars Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Zach Gilford, and Ryan-James Hatanaka with Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster. For the second season, Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives, Get Shorty), Clark Gregg (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Snowpiercer), Brian White (Ray Donovan, Chicago Fire), Tuc Watkins (Uncoupled, Black Monday), and the returning Paul F. Tompkins. Now, here's a look back at the original teaser followed by what we know (so far) about some of the season's new faces:

Huffman has been tapped to portray Dr. Jill Gideon, the ex-wife of Jason Gideon (played initially by Mandy Patinkin). Based on the character description that was released, Dr. Gideon is a brilliant biological psychiatrist who agrees to help the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit investigate a murderous conspiracy theory. Jill is reluctant to return to the bureau's elite team given her complicated history with David Rossi (Mantegna) and her dead ex-husband, Jason Gideon (Patinkin), but soon realizes her specific skill set could help them uncover another clue to the elusive Gold Star mystery.

Gregg is set as FBI Director Ray Madison, who set up the deal to have Voit assist the BAU team.White's Vincent Orlov is Voit's attorney a shady dealer whom Voit uses to keep the pressure on the BAU team from a distance. Watkins's Frank Church appears to be an advocate for children but the BAU is sensing something very wrong with Church's motives. Tompkins returns asBrian Garrity, Emily Prentiss's (Brewster) former neighbor and conspiracy theorist who finds himself being used as a pawn in a much bigger game one meant to end the BAU's investigation before it's barely begun.

Kyrie Irving responds to LeBron James’ comments about him – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 8:49 am

The NBA Finals are about to start, and yet again, LeBron James will be watching the series on television instead of participating in it.

After reaching the championship series 10 times, James has exited early in the playoffs in three of the last four seasons. Of course, in 2022, his Los Angeles Lakers didnt even reach the play-in tournament even though he had Russell Westbrook, his hand-picked third star, by his side.

One man who will compete in this years finals will be Kyrie Irving, a man who was on James Cleveland Cavaliers when they got there three years in a row together.

On the latest episode of the Mind the Game podcast, James said hes mad he isnt Irvings teammate anymore while calling the eight-time All-Star the most gifted player the NBA has ever seen. Before the Dallas Mavericks landed the New Jersey native from the Brooklyn Nets in a midseason trade last year, the Lakers made two attempts to acquire him.

Irving responded to James comments in a complimentary way.

Irving Mavs will be going up against the Boston Celtics, which means many Lakers fans will likely be rooting for him and his squad. At the same time, they will also likely be watching him in a wistful way, as plenty of Purple and Gold fans wish he wouldve become a member of their team.

Shohei Ohtani vs. Paul Skenes lives up to the hype: ‘That’s why we play the game … for matchups like that’ – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 8:49 am

PITTSBURGH When it became clear that Pirates rookie right-hander Paul Skenes would make his fifth career big-league start against the Dodgers, it was natural to circle the game on the calendar as a definitive must-watch.

No matter who is on the mound, Dodgers first innings have become something of an event in and of themselves, considering the three MVPs atop the lineup in Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman. And with each Skenes start early in his career feeling similarly momentous, it was a perfect storm of regular-season intrigue, priming Wednesdays contest to be a bit more special than your average weeknight game in June.

As first pitch approached, buzz was building among the PNC Park crowd eager to bear witness to Skenes showcasing his stuff against three of the best hitters on the planet.

But its still baseball. So many underwhelming outcomes can come from any individual plate appearance; grand visions of epic strikeouts or titanic home runs punctuating matchups between top-tier talents rarely come to fruition. Pitting two of the games best against each other cannot guarantee a memorable result, only set the stage for one.

But when the stars do align, and the results of these heightened plate appearances match up with the supersonic talent on said stage? Youve got to appreciate that when it happens.

Skenes first pitch to Betts on Wednesday was a 101 mph fastball at the bottom of the zone for strike one. His second offering was a 101 mph fastball at the top of the zone that Betts swung through haplessly for strike two. Two pitches later, Betts flailed at a slider for strike three. The crowd erupted, not realizing it was merely an appetizer for what would come next.

In less than a minute of real time, Skenes proceeded to throw three consecutive triple-digit fastballs and yield three consecutive whiffs on three spectacularly intense swings from Ohtani. The ballpark exploded with excitement once again as Ohtani staggered back to the dugout in a daze, left to contemplate the high-octane firefight he had just lost in emphatic fashion.

Round 1 went to Skenes, who turned 22 years old last week.

While everyone in the ballpark probably wouldve loved to immediately fast-forward to the next Skenes/Ohtani at-bat, the rematch was mildly delayed. The Pirates pounced on Dodgers starter James Paxton, forcing him to depart after recording just five outs. By the time Ohtani arrived at the plate in the third inning nearly 50 minutes later, Skenes had been afforded a 7-0 lead. With the home fans enjoying a comfortable cushion, the crowd returned its focus to how Skenes would attack Ohtani in Round 2.

Again, Skenes greeted Ohtani with 100 mph, and again, Ohtani swung with significant intent to do damage, but to no avail. After Ohtani was unfazed by two changeups outside the zone for balls one and two, Skenes went back to the basics: 99.5 mph above the zone, prompting another vicious, helpless hack from Ohtani for strike two. Another 100 mph heater followed, off the inside part of the plate for ball three, producing an ever-enticing full count.

Having already yielded an astonishing five whiffs on five fastballs from one of the most dangerous fastball hitters of this generation, Skenes reared back one more time. In came 100.1 mph at the top of the strike zone. Out went a towering fly ball to straight-away center field, soaring over the 10-foot wall for a home run.

Round 2 went to Ohtani, who is leading the National League in total bases and also knows a little something about throwing 100 mph.

Yeah, I like to call that big on big, Skenes said afterward. Obviously, [I] beat him a couple times earlier. And I think that was the right pitch to throw there. He's just a pretty darn good player. So stuff like that's gonna happen.

And frankly, that's why we play the game, is for matchups like that. So [Im] not happy to give it up, but it's part of the game.

Reflecting on facing Skenes postgame, Ohtani offered his analysis through interpreter Will Ireton: The stuff itself was really good. As you saw in my first at-bat, I couldnt really put together good swings. But overall, its just really good stuff.

Rather than the velo, its really the angle and the release [that make Skenes hard to hit], so I made the adjustment in the second at-bat.

Ohtanis uncanny ability to adjust on the fly, even after looking so overmatched in the first inning, was on display in his third at-bat against Skenes amid an eventful fifth inning. After rookie center fielder Andy Pages tagged Skenes for a home run to lead off the inning and Chris Taylor reached on an error, Skenes responded by striking out both Betts and Freeman looking.

Between those two Ks, Ohtani ripped a single into right field on you guessed it a high fastball. Although Skenes navigated out of the inning to conclude his night without further damage, Ohtani claimed the third and final round of their battle, leaving us all to wonder how Skenes will respond in their next encounter. (The Pirates visit Dodger Stadium Aug. 9-11, in case youre curious.)

Ohtani mightve ended the night with the upper hand between the two, but Skenes unquestionably handled the larger assignment of taming the Dodgers lineup and securing a series victory for Pittsburgh with the 10-6 win. His successful outing provided an exciting encore to what fellow rookie righty Jared Jones did Tuesday in the series opener, throwing six scoreless innings featuring three of his own dramatic encounters with Ohtani, all of which went Jones way (2 K's and a GIDP).

A close friend of Skenes dating to their days playing travel ball as teenagers in Southern California, Jones wields equally electric stuff as his ultra-famous teammate, albeit without quite the exposure at least not yet. But with the duo garnering more attention and promise with each successive outing, the future in Pittsburgh appears to be getting brighter in a hurry, and that feeling was palpable the past two nights at PNC Park.

It was a great atmosphere, Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Wednesday. And you know, I think when you have young players that you've drafted and developed like we have with [Jared] Jones, Skenes and even [Mitch] Keller, we're seeing the fans are into it.

It's really fun to see this ballpark come alive.

UConn’s Geno Auriemma thinks Caitlin Clark is being ‘targeted’ in the WNBA after incident with Chennedy Carter – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 8:49 am

Though a lot of it was to be expected, longtime UConn womens basketball coach Geno Auriemma thinks Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark has been targeted so far during her rookie season in the WNBA.

Auriemmas comments came after Clark was hit by Chicago Sky forward Chennedy Carter during their contest on Saturday. That play, which was upgraded to a flagrant foul later by the league, has been subject to plenty of criticism and discussion in the sports world ever since since.

Is she facing the rookie challenge, the rookie hardships that are inherent with being a rookie? Yes, Auriemma said Wednesday, via ESPNs Michael Voepel. Shes also being targeted.

Carter hip-checked Clark late in the third quarter of the Fevers win over the Sky on Saturday and knocked her to the ground from behind. Carter was called for a common foul in the moment, but the league upgraded it the following day and fined her $1,000. The two had been going at it during the game in the lead up to the foul, but Carter escalated things significantly.

Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game, Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon said in a statement, in part. She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are.

Carter who refused to talk about Clark immediately after the game, which Auriemma called "junior high stuff" said later that she has "no regrets" about the foul itself.

"At the end of the day, it's all love outside of basketball," Carter said. "When we're in those four lines, it's smoke. After, it's all love."

Clark has been fairly quiet about the play itself, and has instead largely just moved on. Shes averaged 15.6 points, 6.4 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game so far this season. The Fever are just 2-9 on the year, and are coming off a 104-68 loss to the New York Liberty on Sunday.

Though Clark is coming off a historic and sport-altering career at Iowa, and she has already helped break numerous viewership records during her short time in the WNBA, Auriemma compared her to several other former NBA greats on Wednesday. When players like Michael Jordan or Larry Bird entered the league, he said, they werent being targeted the way he thinks Clark is.

I dont remember when Jordan came into the [NBA], guys looking to go out and beat him up, Auriemma said. I dont remember when Bird and Magic came into the league and elevated the NBA, them getting targeted and beat up just because of who they were and the attention they were getting.

Appreciate the fact that nows the time [for the WNBA]. I get it. Its long overdue. Why are you blaming that kid? Its not her fault, because you would trade places with her in a minute, but you are not there. Youre not her. So youre [complaining] that she's getting what shes getting.

Paul Skenes blows away Shohei Ohtani, who returns the favor in his next at-bat – Yahoo Sports

Paul Skenes vs. Shohei Ohtani is the kind of matchup that can sell an entire game. It more than lived up to its billing in Wednesday's matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Skenes took the mound against the NL West-leading Dodgers for the fifth start of his career and began on a dominant note, striking out Mookie Betts on four pitches. He then faced Ohtani, and what happened next can only be described as violence.

First pitch: 101.3 mph swinging strike.

Second pitch: 100.1 mph swinging strike (with a foul tip).

Third pitch: 100.8 mph swinging strike.

You might never see Ohtani look as overmatched as he did here.

Skenes proceeded to get Freddie Freeman out on a fly ball to end the inning.

The Skenes-Ohtani rematch came in the third, with the Pirates up 7-0 after a disaster inning for Dodgers starting pitcher James Paxton. Skenes got another swinging strike with a 99.6 mph first-pitch fastball, then ran the count full.

Having gotten five swinging strikes on six fastballs to Ohtani so far, Skenes went back to the fastball yet again for the payoff pitch. But this time Ohtani was ready for it, sending it 415 feet into the batter's eye in center field.

Per MLB.com's Sarah Langs, that 100.1 mph fastball was the fastest pitch Ohtani has homered on in his career.

Ohtani won the third round as well, pulling a 98.1 mph fastball for a one-out single in the fifth inning. Skenes finished his day with five innings pitched, three earned runs, six hits, one walk and eight strikeouts, getting the win in a 10-6 victory for the Pirates.

That is some fun baseball, possibly for no one more than Skenes. While he is known as a flame-throwing monster on the mound, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft was once known for his own two-way abilities as a hitter and pitcher. While at the Air Force Academy, Skenes won the John Olerud Award as the nation's top two-way player in 2022 before he transferred to LSU and focused on pitching.

As he told MLB.com's Alex Stumpf, he idolized Ohtani during that stretch of his career:

I grew up watching him, Skenes said. As a two-way guy, that was what I was trying to be before I got drafted. He was an inspiration in a lot of ways.

Skenes got to see one side of that talent up close and personal Wednesday, with mixed results.
