A Washington, D.C., judge has found an East Naples man guilty for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capital insurrection.
Christopher Worrell, 52, opted to let a judge hear the evidence rather than going before a jury.
On Jan. 6, 2021, after the loss of President Donald Trump's reelection, a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol Building. The mob hoped to prevent Congress from counting electoral college votes and keep then-President-elect Joe Biden from power.

A video of the attack appeared to show Worrell and others accused ofstorming the building, attacking police officers, breaking building windows and wreaking other damage. Worrell said he is a member of The Proud Boys, a far-right, neo-fascist group that advocates for and participates in politically motivated violent events
Worrell's trial took 10 days, with the verdict delivered by U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth on Friday. Lamberth set sentencing for Aug. 18.

Worrell had pleaded not guilty to all the original charges. He faced 19 counts.
Lamberth found Worrell guilty of seven counts:
As of mid-March, at least975 peoplewere charged with federal crimesfor their roles in the riot 502 have pleaded guilty and 382 have been sentenced. Of those, at least 192 people have received prison sentences.
Worrell is among at least 111 Florida residents charged in connection with the mob.
A clerk at the Washington, D.C., federal court was unable to confirm whether Worrell is in custody. His attorney, William Shipley, and court-approved custodian Trish Priller, 52, who used to work for the Naples Daily News, didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

KC Proud Boy jailed more than 2 years in Jan. 6 case to stay there after another delay – Yahoo News

Kansas City-area Proud Boy William Chrestman will likely spend at least three more months in jail while awaiting a court hearing in his Capitol riot case.
A federal judge on Monday granted a request by the Justice Department to continue for 90 days a hearing scheduled for Tuesday. The new hearing date is set for Aug. 4 in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Chrestman, 49, was charged with five other Proud Boys in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach. But unlike the others, the former sheet metal worker from Olathe is incarcerated, held without bond since his arrest on Feb. 11, 2021.
The Army veteran was captured on numerous videos alongside other Proud Boys during the insurrection, dressed in tactical gear, carrying an ax handle and stirring up the crowd with raucous chants.
In a motion filed Monday, the government said that a continuance was necessary because both sides need additional time to attempt to resolve this matter pretrial and because the Justice Department is continuing to provide global discovery to the defendants.
Given the volume of discovery that has been and is being produced, a continuance will provide the defendants with the opportunity to meaningfully review such discovery and determine how best to proceed, including making decisions regarding the filing of pretrial motions, the government said.
It also said that if plea negotiations fail, the defendants and the government will need reasonable time to prepare for trial.
The government said it had consulted with the attorneys for Chrestman and the others charged with him and they did not oppose the motion.
In granting the request, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly found that the ends of justice served by this continuance outweigh the best interests of the public and Defendants in a speedy trial
Should plea negotiations not be fruitful, he said, the parties and counsel should be prepared to set a trial date at the next status conference.
Story continues
Mondays action is the latest in a string of continuances in the case. The last hearing was March 2, 2022. Since then, the hearings have been pushed back eight times.
Chrestmans family and other supporters have long complained that he continues to be held without bond. He is among the Capitol riot defendants incarcerated the longest even though he hasnt been convicted. He and roughly 20 other Jan. 6 inmates in the District of Columbia jail, many of them charged with serious crimes including assaulting police, are referred to as political prisoners by former President Donald Trump and other GOP hard-liners.
Chrestman was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2021 along with Kansas City-area Proud Boys Christopher Kuehne, of Olathe; Louis Colon, of Blue Springs; and Ryan Ashlock, of Gardner and Arizona siblings Felicia and Cory Konold.
The indictment alleged that they planned with each other, and with others known and unknown, to forcibly enter the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and to stop, delay, and hinder the Congressional proceeding occurring that day.
Chrestman also was charged with threatening to assault a federal law enforcement officer. All except Chrestman were released on personal recognizance bonds pending trial.
Colon pleaded guilty in April 2022 to one count of civil disorder, a felony, and awaits sentencing. Ashlock pleaded guilty to one count of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, a misdemeanor, and was sentenced in November to 70 days in jail and 12 months of supervised release.
The cases of Kuehne and the Konolds are ongoing, and like Chrestman, they were scheduled to be in court Tuesday via video conference. Kuehne no longer lives in Olathe. Last fall, after the judge granted his request to move out of state, he sold his house and relocated to Arizona.
The far-right Proud Boys have been at the forefront of the federal investigation into the attack.
Just this month, jurors found four leaders including former national chairman Henry Enrique Tarrio guilty of seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, among other charges. A fifth was found guilty of charges that included assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and robbery involving government property.
A sixth defendant pleaded guilty on April 8, 2022, to conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding and assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers. Another Proud Boys leader pleaded guilty in October to seditious conspiracy and cooperated with the prosecution, testifying as the Justice Departments star witness in the recent trial.
The organization of self-described Western chauvinists known for street-level violence and confrontations with anti-fascists at protests received national attention in September 2020 when, during the first presidential debate, Trump was asked if he was willing to condemn white supremacists and militia groups. Trump responded that the Proud Boys should stand back and stand by.

Proud Boys and Oath Keepers: what is their future with top leaders jailed? – The Guardian US

US Capitol attack
Stewart Rhodes and Enrique Tarrio were convicted but experts worry what role the groups may or not play in the future path of violent extremism
MacKenzie Ryan
Sat 13 May 2023 05.00 EDT
The recent convictions of the Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes and Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio has raised questions about the future of both extremist groups and what role they may or not play in the future path of violent extremism in the US.
Researchers who monitor American far-right organizations said the Oath Keepers have in effect been decimated, with only a handful of chapters remaining, while the Proud Boys are ramping up efforts to protest at LGBTQ events and taking cues from larger national conservative conversations about hostility to transgender rights.
The impact of criminal litigation, really any litigation, legal accountability has been quite different [for both groups], said Rachel Carroll Rivas, deputy director of research and analysis for the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). So I dont know that the solution for all groups engaged in violence and conspiracy are going to have the same outcome from the same accountability measure.
Carroll Rivas said since the arrests of Rhodes and other Oath Keepers members, it only took about five months for the group to go from nearly 100 chapters to just a handful remaining active. I can tell you I dont see as many Oath Keeper bumper stickers around, she reported.
The Oath Keepers, Carroll Rivas explained, were structured with their leader, Stewart Rhodes, assuming all the primary roles. Carroll Rivas describes Rhodess conviction and potential 25-year prison sentence as cutting off the head of the dragon and undermining the groups strategy of recruiting law enforcement, military veterans, and public officials.
They were quasi-following some of the rules with a legal structure and non-profit status, Carroll Rivas said, and their strategy focused on a purposeful recruitment of people who are respected members of society in a greater attempt to wield power. Oath Keeper members joined something they didnt necessarily believe would participate in unacceptable activities, let alone anything criminal, she explained.
When something happens like January 6, when things get out of hand, it pushes the everyday membership away from the organization itself, not from its beliefs, but it definitely pushed them away from the Oath Keepers name.
Experts are most worried about the splintering of the far right when it comes to people who then act alone or in small groups unaffiliated to anyone else: a phenomenon that is extremely hard for law enforcement to track and infiltrate.
Theres a steady drumbeat of people not trusting the government, engaging in conspiracy theories and grievances, and encouraging people to arm themselves, said Oren Segal, vice-president of the Anti-Defamation Leagues Center on Extremism, and a world of people online that share that view. That means there are alternatives to the Oath Keepers for people still wanting to be engaged in far-right activities.
Will those people look elsewhere for more extreme, like-minded groups or will they lay low? It remains to be seen, said Segal
Today, extremists can choose their own adventure, pulling bits of ideology from white supremacy and anti-government groups. As a result, Segal said: There is a lot more opportunity to create strains of anti-government theory that will animate people into action and its much harder to track.
Worryingly, researchers are finding it difficult to know when a potential extremist is moving from rhetoric to action. When the language of extremism is so similar to general public discussion, its more difficult to know where the next attack is coming from, Segal said.
But the Proud Boys, unlike the Oath Keepers, have not splintered.
In the wake of Tarrios conviction, the Proud Boys are ramping up their activity, and trying to disrupt LGBTQ+ events, such as protesting at drag queen story hours. The Proud Boys, which have many local chapters throughout the country and decentralized leadership, have realized they dont need to travel thousands of miles and can shift the social norm in their backyard, said Segal.
He added: They glom on to a contentious public issue in order to try to attract people. Segal argued that the Proud Boys were doubling down in their attempts to target the LGBTQ+ events because of the the baseless narrative that LGBTQ community are grooming children.
Unlike the Oath Keepers, which had a specific anti-government ideology, Segal explained the Proud Boys were taking strains from different ideologies, such as the rise of Christian nationalism and opposition to what they view as the radical left.
The Proud Boys are also not the only extremist group that is targeting the LGBTQ+ community, Segal said. White supremacists with a history of violence are engaging in it almost weekly. Segal called it a toxic combination of groups with a history of violence and hateful ideology, saying it was the challenge of our time to mitigate that threat.
Researchers expressed concerns about Proud Boys actions in the aftermath of January 6 and Tarrios conviction because of their long record of engaging in violence.
Part of their ethos, part of the attraction to others is that they are shamelessly militant, said Segal. Violent extremes and grievances against the government are here to stay, he explained, saying the question is how the US can minimize their impact. Accountability is part of that despite how its spun, he argued.
America is not the healthiest democracy right now, Segal explained. How do you win hearts and minds in this country? There is no fairytale ending to an insurrection.

Latino faith leaders to gather for summit on Christian nationalism – The Washington Post
Posted: at 1:16 am
The ReAwaken America tour, a traveling roadshow featuring self-declared Christian nationalists, rolled into Miami over the weekend, bringing some 50 speakers uniformly declaring the inevitability or necessity of a second term for former president Donald Trump. Others made more arcane promises, such as conservative podcaster Stacy Whiteds forecast of an imminent transference of wealth from the wicked to the righteous that would make those in the audience rich.
ReAwaken America events have been a hub for election deniers, conspiracy theorists and those who discuss immigration as a plot to replace us us being, by implication, White evangelical Christians.
On this score, Miami may appear to be an odd choice for the tours organizers: More than half of the citys residents were born outside the United States and more than 70 percent are Latino. Yet there is evidence that white supremacy and Christian nationalism have made their way into the Latino community in the United States, including among the most violent fringe of those movements.
The shooter who killed eight people at a mall in Allen, Tex., was identified as Mauricio Garcia, a Latino man whose online activity showed an interest in white supremacy.
Journalists found that Garcia posted photos of Nazi tattoos on his arm and torso, including a large Nazi hooked cross and the SS lightning bolt logo of Adolf Hitlers paramilitary forces. He also made references encouraging violence against women, celebrating rape and using vocabulary of the male supremacist incel, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Another prominent Latino linked to far-right groups is Enrique Tarrio, who is Afro-Cuban, and the former leader of the paramilitary group the Proud Boys who was found guilty this month of seditious conspiracy for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
But these examples should not come as surprises, according to Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, who said that the spread of xenophobic prejudice and bigotry online has helped make intolerance transnational and transethnic.
Misogyny, a fascination with fascism, weapon fetishization are things that, I think, define aggressive masculinity. That cuts across a variety of ethnicities and subcultures, Levin said.
Levin also said that Latino Americans can be drawn to mainstream conservative ideas about the value of hard work and so-called family values and can come into contact with groups online that may lead them down a rabbit hole where the direction and the depth and the acceptability of aggression become more fixed.
The increasing numbers of Latinos joining Pentecostal or other evangelical churches mean that they increasingly hear messages from prosperity-gospel preachers, including those who believe Trump was ordained by God to be president.
In 2020 the Trump reelection campaign launched Evangelicals for Trump with a visit to El Rey Jesus Global, a Latino megachurch in Miami led by pastor Guillermo Maldonado. El Rey is part of the Word of Faith network, a subset of the Pentecostal movement that espouses a form of the prosperity gospel.
In his 2020 book, Prosperity Gospel Latinos and Their American Dream, sociologist and Presbyterian minister Tony Tian-Ren Lin said the prosperity gospel shows immigrants how they may thrive in a late-capitalist society.
The pursuit of Prosperity Gospel holiness is equivalent to the pursuit of the American dream, he writes.
The Rev. Elizabeth Rios, who has served as a pastor of a Pentecostal church in Florida, said she has seen Latinos embrace Christian nationalist ideas. They do think that the U.S. has a special relationship with God, and that its supposed to be a Christian country, she said.
These immigrant groups have gone from being newcomers to kind of established. They have now had some access to privileges that are associated with whiteness, she said.
Rios, who started an online and justice-oriented faith-based community in Florida, said its crucial for local churches to address Christian nationalism. The church, she said, is where Latinos get their spiritual sustenance and their identity. Its the church that can disciple people out of Christian nationalism.
The Rev. Carlos L. Malav, president of the Latino Christian National Network, said that white Christian nationalism has infiltrated many Latino Christians in such a powerful way that they are not even aware of the position they are supporting.
Some are aware, he said, and unabashed in supporting some of the tenets of this ideology.
Malavs organization is planning a summit in September to discuss how far-right ideas are popping up in Latino Christian spaces, particularly in evangelical and Pentecostal houses of worship. The gathering will be at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta and will be limited to about 60 key Latino Christian leaders from across the country.
A new survey of 6,212 Americans by the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution found that Americans who are supportive of Christian nationalism generally hold less favorable views of immigrants, racial and ethnic minorities, and are more likely to hold negative views of Muslims and Jews.
About 65 percent of White Christian nationalism sympathizers and adherents disagree that white supremacy is still a major problem in the United States, nearly twice as high as Americans overall in the survey. Additionally, 66 percent of white Christian nationalism sympathizers and 81 percent of adherents believe in replacement theory, the view that immigrants are invading the United States to replace the countrys current culture.
Meanwhile, the report revealed that fewer than a third of Americans, or 29 percent, qualify as Christian nationalists, and of those, two-thirds define themselves as white evangelicals.
Support for Christian nationalism is significantly smaller among Asian American, mixed race, Black and Hispanic Protestants, but that shifts among those who identify as evangelical. White (29 percent), Hispanic (25 percent) and Black (20 percent) Christians who describe themselves as evangelical are each about five times as likely to be adherents of Christian nationalism as those of the same racial or ethnic groups who are Christian but not evangelical.
The Latino Christian National Network is made up of leaders of Latino ministries and denominations, including mainline Christians, evangelicals and Pentecostals, according to Malav. It was formed, he said, with an awareness that progressive and conservative faith communities alike could easily be manipulated and divided.
Malav said the September summit will look at the anti-immigrant nature of Christian nationalism and explore colonialism in Latin America and its relationship with Christian nationalism.
Others see it differently.
Tony Suarez, the chief operating officer of the evangelical National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, said there are extreme ideologies that are masquerading under the guise of Christian nationalism that are dangerous.
But what is not dangerous, Suarez said, is the concept of being extremely devoted to ones faith and ones country.
Suarez said Christian nationalism is a derogatory label directed toward evangelicals like him who stand against transgender rights, who believe marriage is between a man and a woman and who are pro-life, from the womb to the tomb.
I would hope that they have some evangelicals and some people that are pro-biblical marriage, pro-life, that are at the table engaging in the conversation, he said of the summit. Otherwise, its not a true reflection of the entire Christian Latino community.

TMS therapy: The cloud hanging over me was gone – WellSpan Health
Posted: at 1:16 am
At 25, Sierra Johnson feels good about working a full-time job, setting goals for herself, and looking forward to the future.
However, this wasnt always the case.
Just a few months ago, Sierra wouldnt leave her bedroom, let alone her house. She loved working with children but couldnt keep her job at a day care center.
Since she was a young teenager, Sierras anxiety and depression symptoms interfered with school, work, relationships, and life in general. So much so, she shut out the world and hid behind room-darkening curtains in her bedroom.
I was going down this path from fifth grade until now that I was just never happy, Sierra said. I gave up on everything. I became angry and paranoid, and did not get along with my family.
I blamed everyone else, she said. I was stuck.
TMS therapy a game changer
Sierra heard about a treatment called transcranial magnetic stimulation, better known as TMS.
TMS is an outpatient therapy that uses a device to give very short pulses of magnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in certain parts of the brain, explained Dr. Lindsay Campbell, WellSpan psychiatrist and behavioral health site director.
The magnetic device stimulates the underactive parts of the brain in patients diagnosed with depression.
Its quite effective for those patients experiencing major depressive disorder and anxious depression, Dr. Campbell said.
Once patients are referred for TMS, Tanya Seprinski, WellSpan TMS coordinator, works to arrange their treatment plan and sessions. She also works with insurance companies to get patients approved for the program.
The therapy is quick, with sessions lasting just 18 to 20 minutes. Its also safe, with minimal side effects, and patients can drive afterward. Typically, after a few weeks, patients notice a difference, Seprinski explained.
More than 500 patients have turned to WellSpan for TMS therapy. The program, which is available in York and Mt. Gretna, has the lowest drop-out rate in the country.
Our program has changed in that we have implemented several new devices and protocols which translate into less time in the TMS chair for patients and improved accuracy, Dr. Campbell said.
A new outlook on life
For Sierra, once she committed to TMS, there was no turning back. She completed all her treatments over a few months.
At first, the changes in Sierra were subtle.
After treatment 10, my attitude had really changed, she said. And that brought on other, larger changes. I was able to get out of bed and leave my room. I had more energy.
Sierra started noticing physical and emotional changes in herself. Next, family relationships began to heal, and she was back to taking her medication daily without skipping.
I was so happy, I cried, she said. The cloud hanging over me was gone and I could face the day with positivity.
Since completing TMS, Sierra is back to working full-time at her day care job and has the confidence to shop alone and mingle at large events, no longer feeling the need to hide in her bedroom.
She is sharing her story on social media and has been interviewed by reporters from local TV stations - all with the goal of promoting hope for others with depression and anxiety.
I will always have a diagnosis of anxiety and depression, but now I am able to deal with it, she said.
Results of TMS therapy
Studies have shown TMS can improve depression symptoms in up to 83% of patients undergoing treatment, and 62% of them achieve symptoms of relief or remission from their depression.
In addition to depression, the FDA has also approved TMS for obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraines, and smoking cessation, although these are separate protocols than the ones used for depression.

Depression Relief: Brain Signal Reversal by Magnetic Pulses – Neuroscience News
Posted: at 1:16 am
Summary: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a treatment involving strong magnetic pulses applied to the scalp, alleviates severe depression by reversing the flow of neural activity in the brain.
The treatment, known as Stanford neuromodulation therapy (SNT), modifies brain activity related to depression, with effects seen after 10 sessions over five days.
The research shows that in many patients with depression, neural signals between key areas of the brain are sent in the opposite direction to that of a normal brain, which changes after SNT. This abnormal flow of neural activity could serve as a biomarker for diagnosing depression.
Key Facts:
Source: Stanford
Powerful magnetic pulses applied to the scalp to stimulate the brain can bring fast relief to many severely depressed patients for whom standard treatments have failed. Yet its been a mystery exactly how transcranial magnetic stimulation, as the treatment is known, changes the brain to dissipate depression.
Now, research led by Stanford Medicine scientists has found that the treatment works by reversing the direction of abnormal brain signals.
The findings also suggest that backward streams of neural activity between key areas of the brain could be used as a biomarker to help diagnosedepression.
The leading hypothesis has been that TMS could change the flow of neural activity in the brain, said Anish Mitra, MD, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in psychiatry andbehavioral sciences. But to be honest, I was pretty skeptical. I wanted to test it.
Mitra had just the tool to do it. As a graduate student at Washington University in Saint Louis, in the lab of Mark Raichle, MD, he developed a mathematical tool to analyzefunctional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRIcommonly used to locate active areas in the brain. The new analysis used minute differences in timing between the activation of different areas to also reveal the direction of that activity.
In the new study, published May 15 in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Mitra and Raichle teamed up with Nolan Williams, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, whose team has advanced the use of magnetic stimulation, personalized to each patients brain anatomy, to treat profound depression.
The FDA-cleared treatment, known as Stanford neuromodulation therapy, incorporates advanced imaging technologies to guide stimulation with high-dose patterns of magnetic pulses that can modify brain activity related tomajor depression.
Compared with traditional TMS, which requires daily sessions over several weeks or months, SNT works on an accelerated timeline of 10 sessions each day for just five days.
This was the perfect test to see if TMS has the ability to change the way that signals flow through the brain, said Mitra, who is lead author of the study. If this doesnt do it, nothing will.
The researchers recruited 33 patients who had been diagnosed with treatment-resistant major depressive disorder. Twenty-three received SNT treatment, and 10 received a sham treatment that mimicked SNT but without magnetic stimulation. They compared data from these patients with that of 85 healthy controls without depression.
When they analyzed fMRI data across the whole brain, one connection stood out. In the normal brain, the anterior insula, a region that integrates bodily sensations, sends signals to a region that governs emotions, the anterior cingulate cortex.
You could think of it as the anterior cingulate cortex receiving this information about the bodylike heart rate or temperatureand then deciding how to feel on the basis of all these signals, Mitra said.
In three-quarters of the participants with depression, however, the typical flow of activity was reversed: Theanterior cingulate cortexsent signals to the anterior insula. The more severe the depression, the higher the proportion of signals that traveled the wrong way.
What we saw is that whos the sender and whos the receiver in the relationship seems to really matter in terms of whether someone is depressed, Mitra said.
Its almost as if youd already decided how you were going to feel, and then everything you were sensing was filtered through that, he said. The mood has become primary.
Thats consistent with how a lot of psychiatrists see depression, he added. Even things that are quite joyful to a patient normally are suddenly not bringing them any pleasure.
When depressed patients were treated with SNT, the flow of neural activity shifted to the normal direction within a week, coinciding with a lifting of their depression.
Those with the most severe depressionand the most misdirected brain signalswere the most likely to benefit from the treatment.
Were able to undo the spatio-temporal abnormality so that peoples brains look like those of normal, healthy controls, Williams said.
A challenge of treating depression has been the lack of insight into its biological mechanisms. If a patient has a fever, there are various testsfor a bacterial or viral infection, for examplethat could determine the appropriate treatment. But for a patient with depression, there are no analogous tests.
This is the first time in psychiatry where this particular change in a biologythe flow of signals between these two brain regionspredicts the change in clinical symptoms, Williams said.
Not everyone with depression has this abnormal flow of neural activity, and it may be rare in less severe cases of depression, Williams said, but it could serve as an important biomarker for triaging treatment for the disorder.
The fMRI data that allows precision treatment with SNT can be used both as a biomarker for depression and a method of personalized targeting to treat its underlying cause, he said.
When we get a person with severe depression, we can look for this biomarker to decide how likely they are to respond well to SNT treatment, Mitra said.
Behavioral conditions like depression have been difficult to capture with imaging because, unlike an obvious brain lesion, they deal with the subtlety of relationships between various parts of the brain, said Raichle, who has studied brain imaging for more than four decades.
Its incredibly promising that the technology now is approaching the complexity of the problems were trying to understand.
The researchers plan to replicate the study in a larger group of patients. They also hope others will adopt their analytic technique to uncover more clues about the direction ofbrain activityhidden in fMRI data. As long as you have good clean fMRI data, you can study this property of the signals, Mitra said.

Abstract
Targeted neurostimulation reverses a spatiotemporal biomarker of treatment-resistant depression
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is widely hypothesized to result from disordered communication across brain-wide networks. Yet, prior resting-state-functional MRI (rs-fMRI) studies of MDD have studied zero-lag temporal synchrony (functional connectivity) in brain activity absent directional information.
We utilize the recent discovery of stereotyped brain-wide directed signaling patterns in humans to investigate the relationship between directed rs-fMRI activity, MDD, and treatment response to FDA-approved neurostimulation paradigm termed Stanford neuromodulation therapy (SNT).
We find that SNT over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) induces directed signaling shifts in the left DLPFC and bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC).
Directional signaling shifts in the ACC, but not the DLPFC, predict improvement in depression symptoms, and moreover, pretreatment ACC signaling predicts both depression severity and the likelihood of SNT treatment response.
Taken together, our findings suggest that ACC-based directed signaling patterns in rs-fMRI are a potential biomarker of MDD.

May 15Future Tahlequah Middle School students roamed the halls of the sixth- through eighth-grade site last Tuesday, May 9.
During the morning of May 9, fifth-grade students with Tahlequah Public Schools toured the building by themselves, while later that night, the soon-to-be sixth-graders guided their parents through the halls.
TMS Principal Abby Keys said the morning and night tours offer incoming students a way to get acclimated to the building. By having the kids walk the halls a few hours before the night tours, Keys said, students gets a sense of pride and ownership as they take their parents on the same walk.
"We want our kids to come first and then they can bring their families," said Keys. "It's a big change from being in elementary. It's a lot bigger, and all of them are coming in together, so it gives them their first little taste of all being together here."
The morning event, which only featured the incoming students, had the kids walking the halls and receiving information on classes they will be taking, while a more in-depth version was given during the evening tour.
Keisha Murray, an event attendee, brought her home-schooled daughter, Emersyn Murray, as she did not get participate in the morning tours. Emersyn said the tour helped take away some of the scariness surrounding the upcoming year.
Shayna Rodriguez, a parent at the evening tour, said she already knew the layout of the school from subbing at TMS. Since Shayna already knew the lay of the land, she had her son, Liam Rodriguez, show her where he will be going each day. She said the fact that her son already knew how to make his way to his locker and classes was reassuring.
"His summer school is going to be done here, so that alone made my anxiety go out the window, because I knew he has all month of June to prepare [as well]," said Shayna.
Keisha said the event also answered her family's main questions regarding electives and how they work.
Story continues
"We knew there were some, but we didn't know how they get chosen or anything like that," said Keisha.
Keys said she hopes the tours allowed parents and students to feel less anxious about that big step from elementary to middle school. The event offered guardians and their children a chance to ask questions.
"I think it just answers a lot of questions for them," said Keys. "If they have questions about electives, or they have questions here within the school, we're all here tonight to be able to help them."
TMS music director Amy Wright said she's noticed the tours have reassured not only the incoming sixth-graders but the parents, as well.
"I think it is comforting for the kids to be able to see the teachers' faces before they get here, and that it's good for the parents to know we are here to help their children succeed, because all we remember is what we went through in middle school and how horrible it was," said Wright. "It just [helps them to] know there's going to be those times, but we're here for their kids."

Passion Drives TMS Titanium’s Todd Harrison – Drag Illustrated
Posted: at 1:16 am
Almost 17 years ago in a garage in Southern California, Todd Harrison started one of the most widely recognized and respected titanium supply businesses in the country, TMS Titanium. Like so many racing dreams it began with a young man reading issues of Hot Rod magazine and having a goal.
I had read an article in Hot Rod magazine about titanium connecting rods, said Harrison. I worked for a guy who was a racer and I started asking him titanium questions. The next thing I knew I had a job offer. I worked for them and grew that company. I moved from there to another titanium processing company as their general manager. I decided to go out on my own in 2006 in my parents garage.
The early years were not easy as titanium costs were sky high, but Harrison had passion and knew how he would set his company apart. He focused on customer service and finding loyal customers. That combination along with hard work has set Harrison on a path that has seen TMS Titanium grow every year and provide high-quality titanium to customers in just about every racing series as well as aerospace, tactical operations, the chemical and medical industries, and marine services. The biggest growth area for the company has been racing and especially drag racing.
Our sales staff is really plugged in to the racing world professionally and personally, Harrison said. They are fans and they want to do a good job. They know this is a performance business and they like to see the teams we work with win races and championships. We were fortunate to work with Elite Motorsports and Ron Capps Motorsports, who won NHRA Pro Stock and Funny Car championships in 2023. We were involved in supplying the titanium for some of the performance enhancement they made. It is a great feeling to see your friends win and dominate. It was special to be a part of Ron Capps first championship as a new team owner. I spent a lot of time talking with (Capps crew chief) Dean Antonelli talking about parts and uses of titanium.
Harrison isnt just interested in the bold type names in drag racing. He and TMS Titanium are great supporters of up-and-coming teams. He remembers how hard it was to get his company started and it took a lot of support and encouragement from friends and associates. He considers every client a friend and no matter what level they are racing, they should get the best customer service and attention possible.
We are working with Jason Rupert, who is a six-time champion in [nostalgia] Funny Car. He is stepping up to the NHRA Nitro Funny Car class and he just needs some help. We offer material, guidance, and marketing partnerships. We figured out a way to jump in and help some of these smaller teams. We want them to succeed, be competitive, and be safe. Jason is a very interesting relationship. Not only is he a six-time champion but he is also a welder and fabricator. He really understands the metal and I have learned things about titanium from our conversations about his applications and what he has seen and experienced over the years.
One of the benefits TMS Titanium brings to the racing industry is their relationships outside of the sport. Harrison and his partner, James Hostetler, develop contacts with companies and industries around the world. The cross-over from the aerospace, medical, and tactical fields has been a game changer for the company over the years.
These industries are really one and the same. They speak the same language, and they speak a completely different language at the same time. We have people that have no interest in racing, but they are having the exact same problem a race team is having. I can use my knowledge of seeing broken parts and machining applications in the racing world and take that information to the aerospace or chemical processing or medical world and we are able to provide answers and solve problems for them. Everyone struggles at times, whether its racing or machining, and we try and do our little bit to help teams and organizations use our products and our knowledge base. I have always said customer service is No. 1. You must be able to be there for the customer. If you dont know the answer right then let them know you will find out and get right back to them as soon as you can.
Over the years Harrison has met and worked with many legends in the sport. Most importantly, he has developed long-term relationships with some of the biggest names in drag racing. He has leaned on them for advice both in the business and racing worlds.
I have been trained by Roland Leong, who is a great mentor of mine. He has always said it is not what you know, it is who you know. Through our relationships across different racing series from SRX to NASCAR to IndyCar to NHRA, we have created relationships with this knowledge base. If we dont have the answer, I can go to a contact at another organization and get input from them.
Like any business, there have been good years and lean years. Most recently, the past two to three years have been especially trying with a pandemic and global conflict upending supply chains and logistical networks. This is where the long-standing mindset of customer service first has served Harrison and TMS Titanium well to manage a shifting global economy.
We have had a good supply chain for 16 years now, Harrison said. The biggest impact we have seen besides just the world economy and Covid has been the Russian-Ukraine war. A lot of material came from that part of the world. Fifty percent of Boeings aerospace material came out of Russian mills for commercial aerospace, and that has changed with the impact of the war. There is also metal that was melted in Ukraine and shipped to the US to be manufactured, and all those situations have changed. We have had to be very creative in our relationships and luckily, we have some very loyal mills that we work with and suppliers that understand our business. We have found some workarounds and we have been able to continue to work because they know we have great customer service and we do a good job.
Working in the racing industry has been a dream come true for Harrison. While he is not hands on day-to-day with a team or car, he is as involved as he can be. His customers in every industry know he is a phone call or text away. In racing, that can mean contact at any hour of the day. These are the moments and situations Harrison and TMS Titanium thrive in and are eager to step up to help.
We get emails and calls non-stop around the clock, Harrison said. Racers work in the middle of the night. They are in the garage and we get those calls or texts. We just try and be available and fulfill as many of them as possible. It is neat to get a text at 9:30 p.m. and you can give someone an answer and you get into the office at 6:00 a.m. and it gets shipped right out. That is a great relationship to have with these guys.
I cant tell you how many times we get a call two or three days before a race where a racer needs something, Harrison continued. A great example is Ryan Martin blew up his transmission and threw the driveshaft out. They called us at 3:40 p.m. and we stopped production. I put six guys on an eight line item order and we got it out UPS red so he got it the next day, put the car together, and was able to continue filming his racing.
With racing growing and getting faster every season, TMS Titanium and Harrison have kept up their end of the bargain. They are always available and will put in the work to support any race team at any level. They work round the clock to source materials and solve problems whether a team needs to fix a Funny Car body support or a medical fabricator needs raw materials to design a new titanium rod for a patient. The goal is getting the win and keeping the customer happy.

- Positive results from two studies reconfirm safety and efficacy of Focal One -
- Company to host conference call and webcast today, Wednesday, May 17that 8:30 am EDT -
LYON, France, May 17, 2023 - EDAP TMS SA (Nasdaq: EDAP), the global leader in robotic energy-based therapies, announced today unaudited financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2023.
"After achieving record results in the fourth quarter of 2022, we continued to see growing demand through the first quarter of 2023, with our strongest Q1 revenue performance on record," said Ryan Rhodes, Chief Executive Officer of EDAP. "We placed seven Focal One units, including six equipment sales and one operating lease. Based upon the positive feedback from urologists, particularly at this year's recent EAU & AUA meetings, we expect momentum for the Focal One platform to continue throughout 2023, driven by our state-of-the-art technology, our positive clinical outcomes demonstrating excellent oncologic control, and our world-class sales and customer support team."
"Beyond our commercial performance, we also announced positive results from two clinical studies utilizing Focal One, both conducted at leading academic urology centers. Results from these studies clearly demonstrate the safety, efficacy, and benefits of Focal One that support both continued growth and increased utilization of the technology. As Focal One continues to grow, we are also making commercial progress in other areas. We recently received approval of ExactVuTM micro-ultrasound in Japan, representing a significant regulatory milestone for EDAP that introduces this innovative platform to the world's second largest medical device market. As we continue to invest in expanding both clinical and commercial activities to drive bottom line performance, we maintain a strong cash position to support both short and long-term growth."
Business Update:
First Quarter 2023 Results
Total revenue for the first quarter 2023 was EUR 14.8 million (USD 15.9 million), an increase of 13.8% as compared to total revenue of EUR 13.0 million (USD 14.5 million) for the same period in 2022.
Total revenue in the HIFU business for the first quarter 2023 was EUR 5.3 million (USD 5.7 million), an increase of 39.5% as compared to EUR 3.8 million (USD 4.3 million) for the first quarter of 2022. The increase was driven by six Focal One units sold in the first quarter 2023 versus four units sold in the first quarter 2022.
Total revenue in the LITHO business for the first quarter 2023 was EUR 2.8 million (USD 3.0 million), as compared to EUR 2.2 million (USD 2.5 million) for the first quarter of 2022. The improvement was driven by four lithotripsy unit sold in the first quarter of 2023 as compared to one unit sold in the first quarter of 2022.
Total revenue in the Distribution business for the first quarter 2023 was EUR 6.8 million (USD 7.3 million), as compared to EUR 7.0 million (USD 7.8 million) for the first quarter of 2022. The decrease was driven primarily by eight ExactVu units sold during the first quarter of 2023 as compared to nine units sold during the first quarter of 2022.
Gross profit for the first quarter 2023 was EUR 6.0 million (USD 6.5 million), compared to EUR 5.8 million (USD 6.4 million) for the year-ago period. Gross profit margin on net sales was 40.8% in the first quarter of 2023, compared to 44.3% in the year-ago period. The decrease in gross profit rate year-over-year was primarily due to investments in service and applications in the U.S.
Operating expenses were EUR 12.6 million (USD 13.6 million) for the first quarter of 2023, compared to EUR 5.9 million (USD 6.6 million) for the same period in 2022. The significant increase in operating expenses is mainly due to the ongoing build-out of the U.S. team and commercial infrastructure, and non-recurring expenses linked to the leadership succession plan.
Operating loss for the first quarter of 2023 was EUR 6.6 million (USD 7.1 million), compared to an operating loss of EUR 0.1 million (USD 0.1 million) in the first quarter of 2022.
Net loss for the first quarter of 2023 was EUR 7.5 million (USD 8.1 million), or EUR 0.2 per diluted share, as compared to net income of EUR 0.4 million (USD 0.4 million), or EUR 0.01 per diluted share in the year-ago period.
As of March 31, 2023, the company held cash and cash equivalents of EUR 58.3 million (USD 63.4 million) as compared to EUR 63.1 million (USD 67.5 million) as of December 31, 2022.
Conference Call
A conference call and webcast to discuss first quarter 2023 financial results will be hosted by Ryan Rhodes, Chief Executive Officer, Franois Dietsch, Chief Financial Officer and Ken Mobeck, Chief Financial Officer of the U.S. subsidiary, today Wednesday, May 17th, 2023 at 8:30am EDT. About the Endo-HIFU-R1 Phase 2 Study
The Endo-HIFU-R1 Phase 2 study was designed and conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of therapeutic high-Intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for the treatment of rectal endometriosis with EDAP's Focal One Robotic HIFU device. At six-months follow up, of the 60 patients enrolled and treated with Focal One HIFU across four centers in France between August 2020 and March 2022, 96.7% demonstrated positive safety with no or non-significant adverse events (Clavien 1), 3.3% presented Clavien 2 complications and zero patients presented Clavien 3 complications. Additional endpoints included evaluation of the effect of HIFU treatment on endometriosis symptoms and Quality of Life (QoL). A significant decrease in endometriosis symptom level (acute pelvic pain, dyspareunia, diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, false urges, tenesmus, rectal spams, posterior pelvic pain and asthenia) and an improvement in almost all evaluated QoL criteria (physical functioning, role limitation due to emotional problems, energy - fatigue, emotional well-being, social functioning, bodily pain, general health, and on physical and mental global score components) were observed at the first post-treatment evaluation at one month, and those benefits were maintained at three and six months following HIFU treatment. The study also blindly evaluated the evolution of nodule volume via MRI, with a significant reduction of the volume of lesions observed at six months. Results from the study were presented by study coordinator, Pr. Gil Dubernard of Croix Rousse University Hospital (Lyon, France) at the Paris Sant Femmes French Congress on Friday, January 27, 2023.
