Mother Freaks Out After Finding Out How Much Her Childfree Cousin Spent On A Vacation, Calls Her ‘Disgusting’ – Bored Panda
Posted: September 9, 2022 at 5:50 pm
Our familys love grounds us. It increases our confidence and self-esteem, adds more stability to life, and provides a better understanding of social interactions.
But as much as Reddit user OperaJunkie would like to enjoy the company of her closest kin, she cant. At least not at the moment.
To explain her situation and possibly get some support, the 26-year-old made a post on the subreddit r/Childfree, where she detailed a recent conflict with her cousin.
It all started when the woman asked OperaJunkie to look after her kids. The Redditor refused because she had a vacation approaching and as the two continued talking, the cousin asked how much OperaJunkie is spending on her trip. $9,000 was the answer. And the woman was so surprised by it that she rallied the whole family against OperaJunkie, criticizing her for stupid spending.

Such conflicts might be more common than we think. A research team from Michigan State University recently discovered over one in five Michigan adults do not want children.
We found that 21.6% of adults, or about 1.7 million people, in Michigan do not want children and therefore are childfree. Thats more than the population of Michigans nine largest cities, said Zachary Neal, associate professor in MSUs psychology department and co-author of the study.
While the study was conducted in just one state, according to the 2021 census, Michigan is demographically similar to the United States as a whole. Because of this, Neal said, if the pattern holds up nationally, it would mean 50 to 60 million Americans are childfree.
People especially women who say they dont want children are often told theyll change their mind, but the study found otherwise, Jennifer Watling Neal, associate professor in the psychology department at MSU and co-author of the study, added. People are making the decision to be childfree early in life, most often in their teens and twenties. And, its not just young people claiming they dont want children. Women who decided in their teens to be childfree are now, on average, nearly 40 and still do not have children.
Because so many people are childfree, the researchers said this group warrants more attention from the general public. Following the U.S. Supreme Courts overturning of Roe v. Wade, a large number of Americans are now at risk of being forced to have children despite not wanting them, Watling Neal said.
While its impossible to say who is right and who is wrong in this situation from an outsiders point of view, people noted that some things (like the use of the word breeder) might indicate both parties crossed each others line.
Without pointing any fingers, its interesting to note that Dr. Kathleen Kelley Reardon, USC Marshall School professor and author of Comebacks at Work: Using Conversation to Master Confrontation, estimates that 75% of how people treat us is under our own control. Because of this she advocates taking a different approach if you want to experience new, more positive results with these types of conflicts in the future.
Communication is like chess where every move one person makes influences the choices of the other, Reardon said. A good rule of thumb is to not say what you would normally say in response to any provocation. If you usually meet a challenge with a challenge, try asking a question instead. If you let someone go on and on and that leads to anger, link something you have to say to his or her topic and then change to another one.
If you think youre being blamed for something, instead of getting your back up, try saying, Theres some truth to that or I hadnt thought of it that way but I see your point. In other words, tweak what you normally do.

Woman Who Unpopularly Decided To Never Have Children Reflects On It Now That She’s 85 Years Old – Bored Panda
Posted: at 5:50 pm
Even though an astonishing number of people dont feel, and have never felt, the urge to become a parent, the pressure to have kids is still tremendous. Any person who has made this profound decision about leading a child-free life can tell you its usually met in two different ways. One, people mutter a series of condescending phrases such as oh or youll change your mind. Two, they actually take you seriously and instantly warn you that youll be lonely and regret it when youre old.
Speaking of the latter scenario, one open letter on the Childfree subreddit put this notion to bed once and for all. An 85-year-old widow addressed the young people of this community, shared her experience, and proudly stated that she has zero regrets about her choice. Being married for 50 years, she offered her perspective and some validating words of wisdom.
If I could go back in time, would I do it again? (being childfree), 100% yes. I would live the same life one thousand times, the woman wrote. Her story sparked a discussion in the comments below, with responses ranging from kudos to appreciation. Scroll down to read the story in full and the reactions that followed.

In the past few decades, accusatory statements have started flying around blaming younger generations for having fewer kids than ever. According to the World Economic Forum, fertility rates have steadily decreased worldwide for the last 70 years, with a total 50% decline. Small wonder then, why childfree people are met with resistance from society.
The reasons for people having fewer children are plenty: womens empowerment, particularly in education and the workforce, lower child mortality rates, and the increased cost of raising children. The dire reality is that kids are expensive in an economy thats only getting more and more costly. They are a luxury many simply cannot afford.
Aside from these factors, theres a running trend among childfree individuals to say they opt out of parenthood for no reason in particular. A survey by Pew Research Center found that a majority (56%) of American non-parents younger than 50 said its unlikely they will ever have kids simply because they dont want to, while others reported medical, financial, or environmental reasons.
While everybody has their own motives for staying childfree, unfortunately, those who decide not to have children are still subjected to stigma. This usually stems from the fact that many people are still being raised to follow the usual path of getting an education, a job, a house, a spouse, and, ultimately, children. But as the woman wrote in her letter, it doesnt have to be this way.
To gain more insight on the topic, we reached out to Erin Spurling, a writer, editor, and founder of Curiously Childfree. She set up this space to build a supportive community where she can leave a mark, advocate for change, help people feel heard and connect with each other.
According to her, sharing experiences with others can definitely help people to feel more confident in their decision. For women, in particular, we very much have a window of opportunity to have our own biological children, and I think sometimes even those who choose to be childfree can worry about regretting it later, she told Bored Panda.
That combined with family and friends (and sometimes strangers) always telling us we will regret it can be a daunting thought. Hearing from someone much older who has chosen the same path as you can be very reassuring.
The number of childfree communities is steadily growing. No wonder, as people who consistently deal with social stigma are sick and tired of others telling them reasons they should have kids, how much theyll rue their decision, or how selfish they are for failing to pass along their genes and contribute to society. When friends and family fail them, the internet steps up to offer support.
Finding like-minded people absolutely helps you to feel safer, better connected, and it helps when handling difficult conversations. Its exactly the same for us as it is for parents, Erin said. Often, parents will be part of mother-and-baby groups, for example, where they can meet people living a similar life and experiences to them.
Connecting with childfree people is the same, you both know you have a shared experience, how you are treated in the world is similar, your opinions and struggles are likely to be the same, she added. Plus, you know you wont be judged for your choice or have your opinions dismissed by someone else who is childfree.
Erin pointed out that, unfortunately, we still live in a world where women can find themselves feeling excluded for having children and equally excluded for not. Its a strange combination damned if we do, damned if we dont.
Although theres an evident change in attitudes where more and more people are starting to respect individuals who are childfree by choice, a long road still lies ahead. Id just like to remind anyone who is childfree that they arent alone. It might feel like theres nobody else out there like you, but I promise there is.
Make the decisions that are right for you (and your partner if you have one), and remember that many people have wonderful, fulfilling lives without children. You get to decide what a good life looks like for you, just like this brilliant lady did.
And as scary as it might feel to be open about being childfree, sometimes taking that step to sharing it with a new acquaintance can give them the courage to share too, and youll find you have a new friend, Erin concluded.

Guy Comes Up With A Brilliant Plan To Intentionally Drink Before Family Gatherings To Dodge Babysitting Duties Which Usually Fall On Him – Bored Panda

Recently, a childfree man turned to the AITA community for advice, where his story received a lot of attention. The author who goes by the handle Low-Ad-1414 explained how since he is the cool uncle in the family, his older siblings get to dump their rather difficult kids onto him.
Im not qualified or even capable to watch my brothers 3 kids by myself as well as they need, plus their cousins (my sisters kids) also want to spend time with their cousins so Im sitting there by myself watching 5 kids aged 4-8 by myself, 3 of which may have special needs, he explained.
As if that wasnt enough, my brother will give me a physical paper list of parental duties, a backpack with stuff for the kids, then turn his phone off in front of me then walk away after dumping his kids on me, Low-Ad-1414 wrote.
For this reason, the author came up with a way to evade babysitting, even if that meant intentional drinking at family gatherings and being labeled a drunk.

The Future of Nanotech, the World’s Tiniest Industry – Entrepreneur
Posted: at 5:48 pm
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Nanotechnology refers to the scientific study, research and reengineering of the properties of atoms and molecules. There's a great deal of controversy around this science, as it is intended to reshape the building blocks of matter. Like with all growing fields, there are costs and benefits, and due to its infinitely broad usage for applications, nanotech will impact our daily life in a profound way we have only started to see.
Introduced to the world in 1959 by physicist Richard Feynman, nanotechnology was conceptualized as synthesis through the reconstitution of atoms and molecules.
Over the past decade-and-a-half, nanotech has been one of the globe's fastest-growing industries, evolving each year significantly with great new applications. We've seen incredible innovation in energy, robotics, agriculture, health, computation, military intelligence and manufacturing. Those are just a small sampling of the sectors in which nanotech has been a great leader in advancement.
Related: Forget Toothpaste. This Nifty Toothbrush Scrubs Teeth Clean With Nanotech.
Through particle rescaling and manipulation, nanotech creates chemical bonds that are sometimes hundreds of times more potent than steel. These bonds increase a material's surface area, allowing for more atoms to interact with it, making the material more robust, more conductive and more malleable than its natural-sized counterparts. How the particles are manipulated affects how dense or light, big or small, visible or transparent, reflective or absorptive to waves a nanotech product is. The objects of particle manipulation are referred to as nanomaterials.
Nanomaterials are classified into two main categories: naturally occurring (such as blood hemoglobin) and artificially developed (such as quantum dots). Of the artificially generated nanomaterials, there are four common types: carbon-based, metal-based, dendrimers and nanocomposites. While carbon-based and metal-based nanomaterials are formed through the chemical manipulation of elements to derive micro-matter constructs, dendrimers either expand outwardly from a strong core or inwardly from a solid outer shell, and nanocomposites combine different nanomaterials and larger-scale high-volume materials. To be considered a nanomaterial, the engineering must operate within the parameters of a nanoscale's nanometer, which translates to a billionth of a meter.
Nanotechnology is already widely present in our daily life. You may not realize it, but it is in everything from textiles to food packaging to transportation. For example, in recent years, nanotech has been used to create lightweight road, sea, air and space vehicles. In the medical sector, nanotech has allowed for better imaging tools, diagnostic technology and even within medicine itself, including delivering antigens to compromised cells while avoiding healthy cells. And how was that accomplished? The answer might seem like it's out of the pages of sci-fi-- but it's happening today.
Nanobots are nanoscopic machines programmed to deliver a specific task. They've been functional on both bioorganic matter and inorganic matter and have been central in many of today's significant advancements in virology, clean energy, water filtration and 3D printing. Nanobots can deliver medicine, move as a unit to improve the source collection of wind and solar resources, clean contaminated water and link together to replicate a 3D object and enact the point of its function.
Currently, nanotech is researching several world-changing initiatives. Self-repair of structural surfaces is now in the testing phase. This could be revolutionary for transportation infrastructure, allowing nanotech to bind to damaged roads, bridges and railways to correct structural issues and material deficits.
Synthesis of enzymes is also in the works, as is synthetic ethanol. A finite resource naturally derived from fossils, ethanol has various uses, from fuel to household cleaning products to acting as a binding agent for personal care products.
Robust rechargeable industrial battery systems are another avenue of exploration for which nanotech actively seeks real-world testing. Imagine the generation of an infinite amount of electricity. This may soon be possible through nanobots deployed as self-adaptive sensors, working in tandem with nanomaterials fabricated into self-servicing generators capable of powering cities with environment-friendly energy.
Another investigational innovation is replacing computer microchips with nanochips capable of fitting your computer and phone's entire memory on infinitesimal storage units. Since nanotransistors already exist and have been commercially operating since 2014, we may not be so far off from this development.
Gene-sequencing and genetic engineering are incorporating nanotech in illness eradication and the study of tissue-and-organ regeneration. While this is one of the farthest from practical implementations of nanotech's practical applications, it poses significant promise. We've poised to eventually engineer sequencing at the gene level to help eliminate hereditary illnesses and replace the sequences with positive characteristics and traits.
While it can be argued that the future of nanotech is happening now, we have barely scratched the surface. For example, the meeting of nanotechnology with self-realizing AI has long been theorized for its potential benefits in predicting, resolving and managing environmental crises and space exploration through analyzing universal patterns and behaviors. Though still far away, the applications to make climate concerns a thing of the past or develop new climate systems on otherwise inhabitable planets are pretty plausible.
Projected to reach $33.63 billion by 2030, from its current $1.76 billion market size value, nanotech is well on its way to trending as one of the current fastest-growing sciences, not just due to its percentage increase, but in its continued collaboration with industries across the board, and sharing budget of their market share. Future applications are genuinely limitless through nanotechnology, and living during this age of exploration is exciting.

Are You FIRE Material?
Does the idea of tossing the conventional retirement age of 65 out the windowor at least trimming a few years off sound appealing? Join the slew of millennials embracing the extreme-saving lifestyle. Begin with holding onto 70 percent of your yearly income and when you reach approximately 25 times your yearly expenses, the FIRE method says you can quit your day job. Investing some of this money in equities or real estate is a common way to finance a comfortable lifestyle over the next 30 years.
My acquaintances in the FIRE movement have had a goal in common: They dont want to become their parents, says Craig, who authored Piece by PieceTM A Commonsense Approach to a Secure Retirement. They have seen their parents working and struggling into their golden years without any gold.
One key to FIRE method success is having a partner to keep you motivated. Making a budget and sticking to it while earning as much money as possible is crucial. This may require a job promotion, adding a second one, or creating additional revenue streams through side hustles. A final major component is investing a larger portion of retirement savings than the average person is comfortable with. Basically, go big and do it early.

Sisolak, Lee warn Nevada not isolated from assaults on abortion rights – Nevada Current
Posted: at 5:47 pm
In post-Roe v. Wade America, states and the federal government are left to navigate the legal ramifications of the Supreme Court overturning a 50-year legal precedent. As reproductive health centers, medical professionals, and legislatures that support abortion rights cope with the uncertainty, Republicans and motivated anti-abortion rights activists are pushing for a national ban.
Nevada U.S. Rep. Susie Lee, fellow Democrat Gov. Steve Sisolak and experts from UNLV Boyd School of Law outlined the ramifications a national ban would have in Nevada during a Thursday roundtable discussion.
More than 60% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal in some circumstances. Nevadans voted to protect abortion rights in 1990.
The panel Thursday warned a national ban would trump state laws and stressed the importance of voting in this years midterm elections.
This would ultimately overturn the will of the people of Nevada, Lee said.
The Supreme Courts ruling opened the floodgates for several legal uncertainties, including traveling across state borders, increased wait times, and whether reproductive services should be prioritized to residents, said Sylvia Lazos, a professor of law at UNLV Boyd School of Law.
A national ban would exacerbate these concerns as well as pose threats to the lives of women and families, impacting Black and Hispanic women the most.
In America, Black and Hispanic women account for the most abortions due to disparities in access to and utilization of contraceptives. Geographic barriers, financial access and moving can all limit the access to and use of contraceptives, according to a policy brief by the Guttmacher Institute.
Theres going to be a whole generation of women who are going to have children that theyre not ready to have, Lazos said.
It will impact their access to education, financial independence and their ability to leave relationships that are unhealthy for them, she said.
Thats if they survive childbirth.
A national ban would increase maternal mortality rates by 24% in the first year, with the largest increase in deaths for non-Hispanic Black people, by 39%, according to a University of Colorado study.
The anti-abortion folks made a very calculated decision to, at every level of the court, get conservative judges appointed, Lindsey Harmon, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada, said. A lot of folks may have taken for granted Roe v. Wade, so now we have to push both at the state level and the federal level for champions to take action.
Harmon said the best way to take action is to vote for candidates with a track record of supporting abortion access.
The Supreme Court became a political actor when it overturned Roe v. Wade, and other political rights centered around freedom and privacy, including reproductive health care and marriage equality are now in jeopardy, Lee said.
The Dobbs v. Jackson ruling, challenged the constitutionality of privacy that was central to the Roe v. Wade decision, which allowed an individual to make decisions about their body without the interference of the government. A concurring opinion by Justice Clarence Thomas suggested cases involving contraception as well as same-sex marriage and partnerships should be overturned on the same basis.
After outcry over the overturning of Roe v. Wade, several conservative candidates began to backpedal on their stance on a national ban.
Its not just voting for leaders who are pro-abortion access, its also holding candidates accountable for previous rallies, statements and actions supporting a national ban, Harmon said.
Both Sisolak and Lee are up for re-election. Democratic candidates in Nevada and nationwide believe the Supreme Courts ruling has energized many Democratic voters.
April Becker, the Republican challenging Lee, describes herself as pro-life, with exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.
Sisolaks challenger, Republican Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, acknowledges the decision of Nevada voters in 1990 to keep abortion legal in the state, but also promises he will always govern as a pro-life governor.
This isnt just a national issue, it comes down to this state, Sisolak said Thursday.

William and Kate take on Prince, Princess of Wales titles from King Charles – ABC News
Posted: at 5:47 pm
Prince William and Kate will take on the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales following the death of William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.
William's father King Charles III announced their new titles in a nationally televised speech Friday, his first as king.
"Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty," Charles said in a prerecorded speech. "With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given."
William and Kate, the who have three children, are now the first couple to use the Prince and Princess of Wales titles since they were used by Charles and the late Princess Diana, who divorced in 1996.
Charles's current wife, Camilla, never used the title the Princess of Wales, going by the Duchess of Cornwall instead. She is now the Queen Consort with Charles' accession to the throne.
In taking on the Princess of Wales title, Kate "appreciates the history associated" with it, a royal source told ABC News.
The source added Kate though will "understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path."
William, now heir to the throne, also assumes Charles' title of the Duke of Cornwall and inherits the duchy of Cornwall, the private estate that was established in 1337 to provide financial independence for the heir and his family.

"As my heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me," Charles said in his speech Friday. "He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the duchy of Cornwall, which I have undertaken for more than five decades."
Kate, formerly the Duchess of Cambridge, inherits the new title of the Duchess of Cornwall.
William and Kate, along with their children Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte, recently moved from Kensington Palace to Adelaide Cottage, a four-bedroom cottage on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
