Elon Musk Announces Nation Can Pick One Toy from Walmart in Latest Attempt to Buy Public’s Love – Hard Drive

Posted: September 20, 2022 at 8:13 am

AUSTIN, Texas Tesla CEO and internet personality Elon Musk shocked the nation Monday by announcing that, in a last-ditch effort to buy the publics love, everyone could pick out any one toy from Walmart.

I just want you to love me, Musk said outside the Walmart. So I mean it, everyone go and pick out one toy, its on me. Im not skimping on the type of toy either, make it a LEGO set or a Switch game, I dont care. And before you ask, yes, you can have two small toys in place of one big toy if you so choose. Will this buy your affection for a while? You all like me now, right? Im the cool tech guy that buys people things. I care about the water in Detroit or something like that. I said Id fix that, right? And its fixed now? Never can remember how that ended. Anyway, go enjoy your toy, and keep it in mind when my next scandal comes out, please.

Some Americans felt that this move was symbolic of their relationship with Musk.

This actually completely puts everything in perspective: Elon Musk is like our rich deadbeat dad, said local man Mark Harpo. Every once in a while he swoops into our lives and just when you think he might be reformed, he fucks up worse then ever before. You can tell he wants to be liked from the material things he flexes, but his actions are cruel and cold. Reminds me of my dad.

At press time, an increasingly magnanimous Musk announced that he is allowing all Tesla employees thirty minutes to see their families one last time.

This personality trait helped Musk, Gates and Jobs succeed, says biographer: ‘It’s something a lot of these people have’ – CNBC

Posted: at 8:13 am

Elon Musk, Bill Gates and the late Steve Jobs all have one personality trait in common and it might be a clue to their ability to amass so much success.

That's according to author and historian Walter Isaacson who wrote Jobs' biography and is working on one about Musk. Isaacson says that Musk like both Jobs and Gates is unemotional when dealing with employees or colleagues, and uncompromising when it comes to fulfilling his grand vision for his businesses.

"That ability to not be as emotionally, empathetically engaged in order to see [their] vision through. It's something Steve Jobs had, it's something Bill Gates [has]," Isaacson said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Tuesday. "It's something a lot of these people have, because they're not looking for affection from the person sitting across from them. They're looking to get rockets to Mars."

In the past, some of Musk's employees at Tesla have described him as an extreme micromanager who isn't shy about expressing his displeasure when workers fall short of his lofty standards, or fail to meet his overly ambitious deadlines. He can be harsh, and not always easy to work for, but also often inspiring and funny, employees have said.

That sounds a lot like what Apple employees have said about Jobs. The Apple co-founder reportedly could be extremely blunt when sharing his opinions of employees' work, especially if he wasn't impressed with it. In 2019, former Apple executive Guy Kawasaki said that Jobs rarely wasted any time on "social niceties" at the office and "demanded excellence" from his employees.

"You had to prove yourself every day, or Jobs got rid of you," Kawasaki said.

Some of the complaints against Musk the world's richest person, with a net worth of $274.3 billion, as of Wednesday afternoon go beyond mere workplace rudeness. Musk and Tesla have faced criticism over allegedly poor working conditions in the company's factories, with Musk admitting that he asks a lot of his employees.

"If the expectation is, 'Hey, we can live and not work hard and not strain extremely to a great degree,' this is false. That is not true. In order for us to succeed, in order for us to live, we must work very hard," Musk told Bloomberg Businessweek in 2018.

Still, Isaacson said he sees a direct comparison between Musk and Jobs' social bluntness. "Musk is very similar [to Jobs] in being extraordinarily open," he said. "That transparency is part of his genius."

The comparisons extend out to Gates, too even though the two billionaires don't always get along. Gates has admitted that in his early days of leading Microsoft, he "certainly wasn't a sweetheart." In a 2020 interview on the "Armchair Expert" podcast, Gates said both he and longtime friend Jobs were known for their intense competitive fire that translated into extremely high expectations for their employees and themselves.

For Musk, who runs both Tesla and SpaceX, being brusque and to the point with his employees might also be a natural byproduct of being crunched for time, due to his multiple leadership roles. Isaacson, who told CNBC that he is regularly in touch with Musk these days, said the CEO's personality allows him to filter out distractions like the ongoing legal battle over his bid to buy Twitter, for example when he needs to focus on a task at hand.

"He's able to sequentially focus in a way that I almost find like he's half-Vulcan or something," Isaacson said. "Because he doesn't wake up in the morning ... worrying about depositions, he's worrying about valves in the new engine for the Starship."

Isaacson later clarified that Musk definitely "cares about his reputation" but that doesn't change his tendency to be blunt, or even harsh, with employees when it comes to executing a vision for his companies.

"If he's sitting in front of four or five people who have messed up getting the booster of Starship right, he says, 'If I'm starting to feel empathy [for them] instead of moving them out, then that's a misplaced empathy. My empathy has to be with the enterprise of getting to Mars, not with the person in front of me,'" Isaacson said.

Musk v Forrest: The clash of eco-titans and their enormous egos – Sydney Morning Herald

Posted: at 8:13 am

Forrest couldnt let that invective slide. He told the Financial Times, He [Musk] knows that, almost every time a Tesla is plugged into almost every grid in the world, it is just burning coal and oil and gas.I mean, it is doing nothing for the environment. So, his mind-boggling stupid is whitewash.

A difference of opinion around technological weaponry is legitimate enough. The science is still emerging and the jury is still out on whether green hydrogen is a commercial solution - although Forrest has spent a lot of time and resources to prove it up.

Fortescue announced in June it will replace almost half the haul trucks at its Pilbara iron ore mines with battery and hydrogen-powered units from German firm Liebherr which will use technology from WAE.Credit:Fortescue

But what is really mind-boggling is that Forrest - the ultimate businessman - has accused Musk of being too business-like.

If one strips back the theatre from Forrests announcement about Fortescues plan to eradicate the companys emissions within eight years, what you end up with is a financial road map containing two important messages for investors.

The first part of that process is to cement the investment required to transform Fortescues operations into an oasis of green. The second is a very clear statement about the yearly and cumulative savings for Fortescue.

In a nutshell, Forrest says there will be net operating cost savings of $US818 million ($1.2 billion) per annum from 2030, at prevailing market prices of diesel, gas and Australian Carbon Credit Units. (The prevailing prices of diesel and gas are currently particularly high, thanks to the war in Ukraine and a lot could change over the next couple of years.)

Fortescue has also flagged cumulative operating cost savings of $US3 billion ($4.5 billion) by 2030 and payback of capital by 2034, at prevailing market prices.

On the other side of the ledger, the miner plans to invest $US6.2 billion ($9.2 billion) of capital on renewable projects to reach its real zero emissions goal.

It is an investment that Forrest says falls well within the envelope of the promise Fortescue made to investors that no more than 10 per cent of the iron ore companys profits would be spent on Fortescue Future Industries capital expenditure.

Loading

Needless to say, Forrest had his businessman hat firmly on his head when he created the iron ore business that funds his nascent push to create an international environmental company.

While incumbent Fortescue shareholders bought into the company to access its massive cash flows from iron ore, Forrest also has his business hat in place in recognising that a successful environmentally friendly mining company would be particularly attractive to investors looking to enhance their own eco-credentials.

Theres no doubting Forrests passion for the environment and by the same token, investors shouldnt be worried about the billionaire pursuing his passion at the expense of commercial returns.

By 2033, Elon Musk`s Tesla and its AI will be smarter than humans: Study – WION

Posted: at 8:13 am

Is artificial intelligence (AI) as smart as humans or is it smarter? As per scientists, it takes the human brain 25 years to reach full maturity, but new research claims that the AI used by Elon musk's Tesla could equal that in only 17 years.

Researchers have long predicted that artificial intelligence will eventually surpass human intelligence, although there are different predictions as to when that will happen.

According to a study by Autotrader company Vanarama, Tesla's new microchip will be "more intelligent" than humans by 2033.

The study points out that it already has processing capability equivalent to 36 per cent of a human brain.About 100 billion neurons make up a human brain, which triples in size during a baby's first year and develops fully by the age of 25.

"Tesla's new D1 microchip is more powerful than any the manufacturer has previously used in its cars managing 362 trillion operations per second. Its processing power is already over a third (36 per cent) of a human's brain, which is capable of one quadrillion operations per second."

In comparison, the first chip, an Nvidia component from 2016, achieved "only" 12 trillion.

By analysing both current and prior models, the organisation discovered that the capability of Tesla microchips is growing at a pace of 486 per cent every year.

The new D1 chip, which is a component of the Dojo supercomputer platform and the company's Autopilot self-driving system, will soon be made available by Musk's company.

It wouldn't be insane to think that technology will surpass humans in intelligence within our lifetimes, says Vanaram.

"Microchips are currently capable of working the way brain synapses do, with researchers developing chips that are inspired by the way the brain operates."

Elon Musks Starlink Satellite Internet Has Reached Antarctica, But Why It’s Still Not Available In India? – Outlook India

Posted: at 8:13 am

Elon Musks SpaceX-owned satellite internet broadband service Starlink on Monday announced its presence in all seven continents, including Antarctica. This means even the most remote areas can soon have connectivity via satellite internet.

The company tested one of its Starlink internet terminals at McMurdo Station in Antarctica which is inhabited by almost 1,000 people.

What's interesting is despite having thousands of tiny satellites in space that are making internet available in major parts of the world, Starlink, which quietly rolled out internet services in India last year, had to shut down services after government intervention and it doesnt look like it will be available anytime soon in India. To add to its woes, Reliance Jio earlier this year announced its satellite-based internet service in the country, making the task tougher for Musks Starlink.

What Is Starlink?

Starlink consists of thousands of satellites that orbit the Earth at 550 km from the surface. It aims to provide high-speed internet connectivity to people who live in remote areas.

Because of its relative proximity to Earth's surface, Starlink offers considerably fast signals. Starlink offers a latency between 2040 milliseconds, and the internet speeds vary from 50Mbps to 150Mbps.

Starlink claims to have latency as low as around 20 ms, however, many low-level satellites are needed to provide full coverage of the globe.

Starlink reportedly has around 3,000 low-level satellites in space and the company plans to use around 10,000 of them to offer its services in more places.

Why Starlink Couldnt Offer Its Satellite Internet In India?

Last year, Starlink registered its business in India via a local unit, Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited. The company has planned to provide fast internet data in the Indian market at the lowest price compared to the international market.

The then Starlink India director Sanjay Bhargava said Starlink was planning an April rollout, targeting 200,000 devices by December 2022.

Bhargava claimed SpaceX had a 100 percent owned subsidiary in India and would be able to apply for licenses, open bank accounts, etc.

Starlink had received more than 5,000 pre-orders after the announcement. However, the government said Starlink Internet Services doesnt have the license to offer services in India.

The Department of Telecom warned Starlink against taking further bookings. Meanwhile, Bhargava stepped down as Starlink Country Director, India, just four months after his appointment.

In November last year, the Department of Telecommunications warned people to not buy Starlink Internet Services. In a statement, the telecom department told Elon Musks company to get a licence before offering Satellite-based services.

Reliance Jio To Bring Satellite-Based Internet To India

Adding to Starlinks woes, in February this year, Reliance Jio announced its foray into satellite-based internet with a joint venture with SES -- a Luxembourg-based satellite content connectivity solutions provider, under the name of Jio Space Technology Limited to deliver multi-gigabit links to enterprises and retail customers, offering a maximum speed of 100Gbps.

They intend to make use of multi-orbit space networks -- a combination of geostationary and medium earth orbit satellite constellations that are capable of offering multi-gigabit links, while also sporting the capacity to power enterprises and retail customers across India.

Akash Ambani, Director of Jio, said, While we continue to expand our fiber-based connectivity and FTTH business and invest in 5G, this new joint venture with SES will further accelerate the growth of multigigabit broadband. With additional coverage and capacity offered by satellite communications services, Jio will be able to connect the remotest towns and villages, enterprises, government establishments, and consumers to the new Digital India. We are excited about this new journey combining our massive reach and customer base with SESs innovative leadership and expertise in the satellite industry.

On september 12, JSCL received a key approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to start high-speed broadband-from-space services.

Jio Vs Starlink

SES has satellites in geostationary equatorial orbit (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO), while Starlink satellites are in low earth orbit (LEO).

GEO satellites are positioned at an altitude of 36,000 km; MEO at 5,000-20,000 km while LEO is positioned at 500-1,200 km.

While it would take just three GEO satellites to cover the whole Earth, LEO satellites are smaller and cheaper to launch than GEOs or MEOs.

Reliance hasnt made it clear yet if Jio Space Technology will also consider low-Earth orbit, or LEO, satellites -- a category that provides rapid data transmission, or lower latency, since they are closer to Earth.

Russia's Hostility Towards Starlink

As Russian forces advanced in Ukraine, they closed down Ukrainian internet services and tried to block social media.

Musk made Starlink available in Ukraine immediately after the invasion started after Mykhailo Fedorov, the country's vice prime minister called on Musk for help in late February.

About 15,000 of Starlink's sets of dishes and routers have been shipped to the country.

Russia recently issued a complaint against Starlink satellites, which are being allegedly used for military purposes, hinting that these may become a "legitimate target" for wartime operations.

During a United Nations meeting on reducing space threats earlier this week, a Russian official without naming Starlink said "the United States and its allies" are using satellites for military use which "may become a legitimate target for retaliation".

Notably, the Starlink constellation has over 2,800 satellites and many are parked over Ukraine to provide internet services in the country owing to the disruption of communication after Russia's attack.

A few days after Russia's statements, Musk tweeted that "Starlink is for peaceful use only".

In May this year, Musk said Russia has increased its efforts to jam SpaceX's Starlink Satellite internet in Ukraine but hasn't succeeded.

Elon Musk Wants to Sell Satellite Internet to Iran If He Can Get an Exemption on Sanctions – Gizmodo Australia

Posted: at 8:13 am

Elon Musks satellite internet provider Starlink will try to offer its service to people in Iran, provided U.S. sanctions against the country can be waived, according to the billionaire. Musk declare his intentions to enter the market in response to a tweet from someone who said they were in Iran on Monday and wanted to know if Starlink would ever be available in the country.

Starlink will ask for an exemption to Iranian sanctions in this regard, Musk tweeted.

U.S. sanctions against Iran are some of the toughest in the world and often limit the ability of everyday people to receive basic medical supplies and medicines sometimes not because those medicines are specifically mentioned in American sanctions legislation but because businesses and banks are afraid to do business in Iran, a side effect known as overcompliance.

But it appears Musk isnt afraid of doing business with Iran, despite his company SpaceXs lucrative government contracts and his need to maintain a security clearance with the Pentagon. Musks illicit drug use was previously an issue for the U.S. Department of Defence.

Will Musk actually follow through and apply for an exemption? That remains to be seen, given his propensity for saying lots of things and following through on just a small percentage of those promises. But the people in Iran no doubt await with bated breath.

Some sanctions against Iran were lifted during the Obama era when the JSPOA was signed, they were strengthened again under the Trump regime when the 45th president unilaterally violated the deal. And while President Joe Biden has shown no interest in reviving the deal with Iran, its not clear what the current president would do if Musk came to him hat-in-hand for a sanctions waiver.

Then again, Musk has made fun of Biden in the past. So, who knows?

Independent review of Kansas foster care system points to progress and ongoing failures – Kansas Reflector

Posted: at 8:10 am

TOPEKA An independent evaluation of the Kansas foster care system shows the state is improving the stability of children in state custody but breaking its promise to end the practice of children sleeping in offices overnight.

The report released Monday by the Center for the Study of Social Policy found that 53 foster children slept in offices 167 times in 2021, including one child who slept in an office for 54 nights. Additionally, case workers for the two largest foster care contractors struggled with heavy caseloads, and only 65% of foster children were able to get the mental health services they needed.

State officials and foster care advocates say the report underscores both the progress made under Gov. Laura Kellys administration as well as the severe challenges that remain.

We do understand that you cant go from zero to 60 in this kind of a system very quickly, said Teresa Woody, litigation director for Kansas Appleseed. So we are happy about the improvements. We recognize that theres a lot of improvement that has to occur going forward. And that is going to take some investment in the system. It cant just be done by one branch of the system. I cant wave a magic wand and make those resources appear.

The independent assessment of the foster care system is a condition of the statessettlement of a class action federal lawsuit with Kansas Appleseed and other entities.

Kansas Appleseed sued the state in 2018 over severe instability in the foster care system. Kansas settled the lawsuit in January 2021 by agreeing to show improvements in how the system operates and measurable outcomes. As part of the deal, a third-party monitor will provide yearly updates on whether the state is living up to the agreement.

The Center for the Study of Social Policy is a D.C.-based nonprofit whose mission is to achieve a racially, economically, and socially just society in which all children and families thrive. The report released Monday examines the progress made by the state and its contractors during the 2021 calendar year.

Reforming a child welfare system is a complex and multi-year endeavor, said Judith Meltzer, president of the Center for the Study of Social Policy. During this first year, Kansas has made considerable progress in addressing some fundamental problems and has started down a path that we anticipate will lead to further improvements in the years ahead.

The report shows the state made immediate progress in addressing mental health needs by investing in the federal Family First program, developing specialized foster homes that serve children with serious behavioral needs, investing in certified community behavioral health clinics and launching a statewide mobile crisis hotline.

But only 34% of foster kids received timely mental health and trauma screenings, and only 65% of foster kids received the mental or behavioral health services they need. The first-year target for both metrics under the terms of the settlement was 80%.

The state showed significant improvement on one of the key metrics in determining stability within the foster care system, which is the number of times a child moves from one home to another. When Kelly took office in 2019, the children on average moved 9.7 times per 1,000 days in care. Last year, the rate had improved to 5.84, meeting the target goal of no more than 7 moves per 1,00 days.

However, all four of the state contractors continue to report children sleeping in offices, as well as night-to-night changes in where a child stays sometimes for days or weeks at a time.

Linda Bass, president of KVC Kansas, addressed the problem of children sleeping in offices during a hearing last week of the Legislatures child welfare oversight committee. Bass said all of the foster kids who are staying in the office have complex behavioral health needs.

I dont have toddlers, school-aged children, children with a single diagnosis in the office, Bass said. I have children who are in pain because they theyre dealing with multiple things, oftentimes had behaviors that overwhelm a family and sometimes overwhelm a facility.

State contracts require caseworkers to maintain a maximum caseload of 25 to 30 children, but available data showed case workers frequently exceed that number. By the end of 2021, 42% of Saint Francis Ministries caseworkers and 24% of KVC Kansas caseworkers were assigned more than 30 children. Saint Francis also had more than 100 children who were not assigned a caseworker.

If the state can fix the unacceptable problem of overburdening caseworkers, saidMike Fonkert, a campaign director for Kansas Appleseed, many other problems will be lessened.

We need providers and the contractors to be honest about what it will truly take to meet the demands of the contracts to care for these kids, Fonkert said. We continue to see overloaded caseworkers, consistently.

Oversight of the foster care system has become a campaign issue in the governors race, with Republican nominee Derek Schmidt attacking Kelly for not making more improvements.

My administration inherited a broken child welfare system that had an unacceptable number of children in care, a lack of placement stability and limited prevention services, Kelly said in a statement. Under my administration, we now have 1,300 fewer children in the system, and the neutral report shows we have made substantial progress in making sure kids are in stable placements and experience fewer moves. Theres more work to be done, but this report shows we are headed in the right direction.

The number of kids in the foster care system declined from 7,600 in 2018 to 6,800 by the end of last year and to 6,200 by June of this year.

C.J. Grover, spokesman for Schmidts campaign, said the state has invested millions in the foster care system under Kelly, but still has kids sleeping in contractor offices and has fallen far short of meeting the specific promises the governor made about fixing the system.

Patriots analysis: Big progress for offensive line, play calling and Agholor – Press Herald

Posted: at 8:10 am

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. Patriots center David Andrews had only one thought as his team held a 17-14 lead over the Steelers and faced third down late in the fourth quarter.

You are going back to the huddle thinking, Oh man, I hope they call a run here, he recalled.

Andrews got his wish.

Then we went back to it and finished it.

The play, a 5-yard run by Damien Harris, sealed New Englands first victory of the season. It also served as the capstone to a redemptive performance by an O-line roundly criticized during a Week 1 debacle at Miami that was rife with communication issues and included allowing a disastrous strip-sack on quarterback Mac Jones that was returned for a touchdown.

Against the Steelers, that same O-line didnt allow its quarterback to be taken down despite him being under pressure on 34% of his drop-backs.

We cleaned some things up, did some things to help ourselves, Andrews said. I thought it was a good day.

It enabled Jones to spread the ball around to six different receivers and complete 21 of his 35 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown.

Jones was particularly complimentary on the play of rookie left guard Cole Strange, who saw the ball run to his side four times during the decisive final drive.

Hes doing a great job learning the offense, Jones said. Its hard coming in as a rookie and starting. Hes just got to continue to grow and improve what he wants to improve on. Thats what Ill tell him.

Coach Bill Belichick also stepped up. Throughout the preseason he brushed aside questions concerning the play calling system the Patriots would be employing following the exit of former coordinator Josh McDaniels. While senior football advisor Matt Patricia has held the play call sheet in the first two games, Belichick seemed more involved on Sunday between series and could be seen leading conversations with Jones while Patricia and quarterbacks coach Joe Judge listened in.

The fruits of Belichicks increased involvement seemed to show up on the field and translated into an offense that had a lot more fluidity. Belichick has repeatedly reiterated that the ultimate responsibility for the offense would lie with him. Sundays structure could be a glimpse of how things will look going forward.

The New England defense, meanwhile, kept Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky in the pocket for most of the game, sacking him three times while pressuring him on 21.6% of his dropbacks according to Pro Football Focus.

Still, Pittsburgh remained a threat as it converted on 8 of 15 of its third downs. Through two games, New Englands defense has allowed a 48.3% conversion rate on that key down. Though they limited big plays, safety Devin McCourty acknowledged theres room to clean some things up.

I think that with every team we play, there is going to be an element of dangerous players, he said. Weve got to do a better job of that in the back end and I think our front has to make them pay for trying to buy time to create an opportunity to throw the ball downfield.

STOCK UP

Receiver Nelson Agholor attacked the preseason with something to prove coming off a mostly underwhelming first season in New England in 2021. He followed up an active Week 1 with his first 100-yard receiving game as a Patriot, pulling in six catches for 110 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

STOCK DOWN

DeVante Parker was one of the Patriots top performers at receiver during training camp, regularly reeling in deep catches and tightly contested 50-50 balls in the red zone. That explosiveness hasnt shown up through two regular-season games. He was targeted twice but didnt have a catch against the Steelers. Thats after he had only one catch for 9 yards in Week 1 vs. Miami.

NOTES

Running back Harris limped off the field following his game-clinching, third down run in the closing minutes. But he said afterward that he was fine. Kicker Nick Folk extended his streak to 56 consecutive made field goals under 50 yards with a 28-yarder in the first quarter. It tied the NFL record with Ryan Succop (2014-17 with Tennessee). Folks previous miss inside the 50-yard line was a 45-yard attempt in the 2020 season opener vs. Miami. New Englands defense has a big test in its home opener this week as it welcomes Baltimore and quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson has been efficient through the air and on the ground thus far. The Ravens also arent expected to be in a good mood coming off their fourth-quarter collapse against the Dolphins.

Idaho State Police wrote on Facebook over the weekend, He was recently moved out of ICU and can walk short distances. He has loving support from his family and members of the Idaho State Police.

A GoFundMe page created by an ISP trooper for Wendler had a $50,000 goal to help raise money for medical expenses. It has surpassed that goal by raising over $54,000.

On Monday, the page shared an update that said Wendler is dealing with a traumatic brain injury and has experienced moments of joy, anger, frustration, confusion, laughter and love.

During the past two nights, Mike puts on his trooper hat and does patrol walks with the nurses. Mike will have periods of confusion if there is a great deal of noise or action around him. He does find comfort from the familiar things in his room and they help him to remember his world before this life-changing incident, the page said.

Construction crews begin demolition of I-30 River Crossing bridge – THV11.com KTHV

Posted: at 8:10 am

Crews have now begun demolition on the I-30 river crossing project, and though it has been a long time coming, progress is being made.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. The banks along the Arkansas river are typically quiet, and tranquilbut if you were to look up, that may no longer be the case.

"During the daytime hours, we're going to be making a little bit of noise," Dave Parker, spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Transportation, said.

Those noises that have been happening, are the sounds of jackhammers and piledrivers, and though they are loud, they also mean that progress is being made.

"The first part of taking down that bridge is going to be demolishing that upper part, the deck, the concrete," he explained.

If you've driven near the I-30 crossing area during the recent months, then you've most likely seen construction crews making progress on a new bridge next to the old one and as of last weekend, people were finally able to drive on it.

"Getting the east side of the bridge, or getting the one bridge open was a big undertaking, we're happy for that," Parker said. "You know, we still got some other things to take care of, but yeah, so far so good."

Parker said that though progress has been continually moving along, there's still a ways to go. He also added that they're about 40% done with the project, and it is expected to wrap up in 2025.

"I think the people have overall accepted the fact that this is going to be a major area of construction for a good while, for good reason," he said.

Now that demolition has begun, crews have already started to take off the top layer on the old bridge, and after that, they'll cut away the old frame.

Once they are finished doing that, they'll get rid of the piers above the water, then it will get really loud when they blast the parts underneath the water.

"So we're trying to be, you know, as environmentally safe and sound as possible, while also getting the bridge demolished in a quick and safe way," Parker described.

He also said that though the demolition may be a little louder, and traffic may move a little slower, the end result will be worth the wait.

"Two new bridges, 12 lanes, two years from now," he said. "I know two years may seem like a long time, but, you know, it takes a while to build things like this."
