The Smallest Country in the World That No One Knows About – History of Yesterday
Posted: September 20, 2022 at 8:35 am
ou would think that this is some sort of confusion as we cannot legally say that an old sea platform can be considered a small country. Well, it seems that if you have the right paperwork anything is possible. Sealand is in fact a microstate that can be located ten kilometers from the coast of England. This sea platform has quite a lot of history behind it, which led to it being a country that requires you to have a passport to enter. The country even has its own passport that can be used to travel to sixty different countries around the world.
Sealand, or at least the sea platform that holds the country today was built during the Second World War by the British as an anti-air defensive fort against German fighters and bombers. After the war ended, the platform was never put to any use, nor destroyed. In the 1960s a group of enterprising DJs used the platform to set up an illegal radio station in order to get pop music to British listeners. As they were in a remote location, it was difficult for the British authorities to catch them. The problem is that it impacted the BBC which had control of the British radio industry at the time as there was no such thing as commercial radio.
One very interesting aspect is that there were a few such naval forts set up in World War 2 and this scheme with pirated radio stations seemed quite interesting. Well, it was interesting enough to make Paddy Roy Bates, leave his job as a businessman, and set up his own radio station which was used to broadcast music to Essex, England. His radio station was named Radio Essex and he set it up on the naval fort named Knock John, the one that he actually fought on in World War 2, that is how he knew of its existence.
Paddy Roy Bates had enough with the society he was living in, so he decided that he would take his whole family and create his own country on one of the Naval forts used in World War 2. He made this decision once the British government allowed commercial radio, which meant that he could run a legal business. Therefore on September the 2nd, 1967 he declared the naval fort Rought Towers (nickname of the naval fort) the Principality of Sealand.
As they developed the reputation of their country, they started issuing their own currency, stamps, and even passports. Only 300 passports have been issued so far over the years, only to people that the Principality of Sealand could trust.
Obviously, this new country caught the attention of many people, some of them wanted to do some harm and eventually start a small war. In 1978, the Sealand naval platform was set on fire and the family was taken as hostage by a German lawyer named Achenbach who pretended to be the Prime minister of Sealand. He hired some mercenaries and took over the country.
The event was important enough that the British and German governments got involved to defuse the whole situation. At some point, Roy Bates took over the naval platform and took Achenbach and his men as hostages. This made the German government send a diplomat to negotiate with Bates and free Achenbach. Even after Achenbach got back to Germany, he still endorsed that he was the Prime minister of Sealand.
However,Roy Bates considered that sending a diplomat to Sealand meant that Germany recognized Sealand as an actual country.International law says that artificial structures such as naval platforms cannot be considered islands. However, as the platform is settled in international waters, it is not in the possession of the British Government, therefore, from a legitimate point of view, we can consider this as a real country, even if most states dont.

Commission on changing state seal and motto behind schedule – WWLP.com
Posted: at 8:35 am
BOSTON (WWLP) The state commission reviewing Massachusetts seal and motto met Tuesday to discuss what the future of the flag looks like.
The Massachusetts state seal and motto is seen as controversial and in need of change by many Massachusetts residents, but the commission tasked in changing the seal and motto is running behind. The commission is made up of lawmakers, tribe members, representatives for the State Commission on Indian Affairs and other agencies.
The state seal and motto as it stands shows an image of an indigenous man standing under an arm wielding a sword with the Latin motto translated to By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty
During Tuesday meeting, the commission held two meetings, the first of its subcommittee on Public Consultation and then the History and Usages Subcommittee met. The deadline for the groups recommendation is December 31 of this year.
They asked for an extension, but the language for that is held up in the economic development bill, which is still in conference committee.
Our deadline is still December, just its not possible to launch a project of this magnitude in just a few months and actually get something respectable to the legislature in that time, said Jim Wallace, a member of the commission.
The group is hoping to do polling and hold open meetings to get the public involved in the future of the design and motto. If the group does not finish their work by their deadline, they are at least hoping to pass along recommendations to help in the future.
The economic development bill also included $100,000 worth of funding for the commission.

A short history of luxury: Mumm, the "Champagne of the Sovereign of England" – Luxus Plus Mag
Posted: at 8:35 am
If England mourns its Queen, it is also the case for the champagne house Mumm, which was very often on the banquet table of Elizabeth II.
The history between the royal family of England and the Champagne house Mumm is not new. In 1886, the British Crown recognized G.H. Mumm Champagne as the official supplier of Her Majesty Queen Victoria and her son, Prince Albert-Eduard of Wales, the future Edward VII.
This recognition was granted by the Royal warrant, a warrant issued to companies supplying goods or services to a royal court or certain members of the royal family. This precious document, written by hand, bears an official seal and the signature of the Lord Steward at the head of the Royal Household. It was originally valid for ten years, but was later reduced to five years.
In the 1900s, many royal families from all over Europe, from Austria-Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, Prussia, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, were won over by the Mumm style. As the official supplier to the Royal Court of England, Mumm champagne was served at the coronation of Edward VII in 1902 and at the Derby Day banquet at Buckingham Palace in 1904. The House of Mumm displayed this recognition by creating a special label: G.H.Mumm et Co Champagne des Souverains on which the coats of arms of its customers appear.
But to celebrate the jubilee of its reign last June, the court committed an infidelity to Champagne Mumm by tasting, for the first time, an English sparkling wine made from pinot noir, meunier and chardonnay grown in Kent and West Sussex. The bottle was also labeled with the embroidery of the Queens dress.
Regarding the Champagne, it will be necessary, following the death of the Queen, to make some changes to the label on the bottles, as explained by Sebastien Lebon, ambassador at Mumm, to France 3: Initially, a new mention will be affixed to the mandate. It will no longer say Our Majesty The Queen, but rather The Late Queen and we will have a new commission in 2024 that will decide whether or not to continue to award us this warrant.

Genshin Impact ‘Try to Lift the Seal’ Guide: 7 Seal Locations and how to lift them – The Click
Posted: at 8:35 am
Try to Lift the Seal is one of the objectives in Genshin Impacts For the Children of the Past world quest. This world quest is part of the Aranyaka series, specifically from Part III Nursery of Lost Dreams.
During this quest, the Traveler, Paimon, and Arama find themselves in an area filled with sand. Here, Arama says that Maranas Avatar is very, very deep underground and that a couple of seals must be broken to be able to face and defeat it.
However, locating the seals in a wide area might not be the easiest thing to do. Thats why we will be pointing out their locations in this guide, as well as how you can try to lift the seal.
To break the seals, you must hit them with Pyro Attacks. Note that these seals are stone pillars and that there are seven (7) of them. Below are their locations:
After talking to Arama, you should be able to find one seal a few meters behind him.
Another seal can be found on the left side of Arama.

When you head to the Teleport Waypoint in the area, you should be able to find two (2) seals near it.
These four (4) seals are all that you can find in the current sandy area. The three (3) remaining ones are only accessible after you go near the Claustroflora and play the Rhythm of the Beastly Trail using the Vintage Lyre. Doing so will break the wall behind the flower. Behind the wall, you will immediately find the fifth seal.
Deeper into the cave, you should find the sixth seal and an inactivated Dendrogranum. Activate the Dendrogranum by playing Rhythm of the Sprout on your Vintage Lyre. Doing so will allow you to summon a healthy Dendrogranum.
With the healthy Dendrogranum, shoot the Dendro Rings around with Charged Attacks. This will remove the vines that block the path to the next area where you will find the seventh and last seal.

In the last area, you will find another Claustroflora. You can play your Vintage Lyre near it to break the wall and easily go back to Arama.
Thats all you need to do to complete the Try to Lift the Seal quest objective in Genshin Impacts For the Children of the Past world quest. We hope you were able to lift the seal and had fun!

The example of the late Queen will shape the future, hopes the Bishop of St Asaph – Rhyl Journal
Posted: at 8:35 am
THE example set by Queen Elizabeth II will shape the future, hopes the Bishop of St Asaph, in a letter sent out to churches across north-east and mid-Wales.
The Rt Revd Gregory Cameron described Her Majesty as perhaps the most influential leader of modern timeswhose unstinting service, and quiet compassion. means that she will forever have made her mark on British history.
The letter, in Welsh and English, is available to read online.
In a short film to accompany the pastoral letter, Bishop Gregory added that Queen Elizabeth was a woman of tremendous faith who believed that she found the grace and strength to be able to do the work that she did through God.
On Sunday (September 18), Bishop Gregory will join with civic leaders from across north-east and mid-Wales in a service of commemoration for Queen Elizabeth II at St Asaph Cathedral.

The bishop, who will give the address, will be joined by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Clwyd, representatives from the House of Lords, members of parliament and the Senedd, council leaders, and members of the Royal British Legion.
A special edition of the gospel of St John, celebrating the life of Queen Elizabeth II, will be given, as a keepsake, to everyone attending the service.
Editions of the Faithful Servant Gospels are being made available by the Pocket Gospel League.
Also in Bishop Gregorys pastoral letter, he looks ahead to the reign of His Majesty, King Charles III, whom he has met on several occasions.
He draws a parallel between the new Kings description of the new Prince and Princess of Wales and the example of Jesus.
He said: When King Charles addressed the nation the other evening, he also said something significant about the work of the new Prince and Princess of Wales.
He spoke of them helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given.
It was our Lord who always, in his ministry, brought people from the edges into the centre of society.
He reached out to others whom society had rejected, and asserted the importance and value of every single individual.
If our Royal Family, and our politicians, can live by this principle, then there is hope for the future.
Today (September 16), Bishop Gregory will travel briefly to London to represent the Church in Wales at an audience with the King at Buckingham Palace, alongside other UK faith leaders.
Churches across the diocese are open for prayer, to light a candle and many have opened books of condolence.
Services of commemoration are taking place in churches and all are warmly welcome to attend.
Among those taking place are:
Saturday, September 17
11am St Margarets Church, Bodelwyddan (The Marble Church): Memorial Service for Her Majesty the Queen
Sunday, September 18
11am St Marks Church, Connahs Quay: A civic service of commemoration
11am St Marys Church, Mold: A Service of Commemoration
11.30am St Bartholomews Church, Sealand: A Service of Holy Communion remembering the late Queen.
3.30pm St Asaph Catheral with Bishop Gregory and civic representatives from across north-east and mid Wales.
6pm St Marys Church, Chirk: A service of commemoration
6.30pm St Giles Church, Wrexham: A Memorial Service for the Queen. The Mayor of Wrexham and civic leaders will be present.
The Diocese of St Asaph is one of the six dioceses of the Church in Wales, an autonomous province of the worldwide Anglican Church.

Frozen Planet II: Viewers in tears as seal pup abandoned at 12 days old – Metro.co.uk

Frozen Planet II continued with its stunning and at some points distressing content on Sunday, after making a welcome return to screens last weekend.
The Sir David Attenborough-narrated series brought viewers on a journey to the North Pole this episode and countries including Norway and Russia as it took in polar bears making friends, orcas hunting other whales, majestic narwhals and one very sweet seal pup.
Following last weeks bizarre walrus mating ritual, the programme homed in on the story of a mother seal looking after her new baby, who was of course all types of white, fluffy and adorable.
Viewers were lulled with gorgeous footage of the parent and baby bonding as the mother fed her baby and taught him how to swim.
A particularly important lesson for the newborn harp seal pup, as Sir David revealed they were vulnerable to pneumonia while developing the thick layer of insulating fat needed to brave the freezing temperatures.
He also revealed the quite stunning fact that female seals only produce milk for 12 days, the shortest-known nursing period in mammals, and one that sees them lose a third of their body weight as they help pups put on the necessary fat.
However, Frozen Planet II fans were not ready for what would come next as renowned conservationist and broadcaster Sir David explained: After producing milk for 12 days, she has lost a third of her body weight.
Now she must return to her feeding grounds. She will never see her pup again.
If that wasnt the killer blow, more followed as it transpired that seal pups spend the next four weeks alone on the packed ice, hoping to survive before they are ready to go hunting in the water on their own.
Anyone else bawling at the harp seal? asked one viewer, while another lamented: The baby seal and its [sic] mother have just broken my heart.
One particularly shaken fan commented: No human has ever hurt me as bad as that seal and pup did.
Viewers were also noticing Frozen Planet IIs stunning music as one wrote: Oh nooooo, little pup is on his own! Poor little pup. (Btw the emotional manipulation music as his mother slipped from view was Bambi-worthy)
The seal pups sniffles and wails he made were also testing resolve, but it was just another lesson in the (often) brutal circle of life especially as the final few moments of the show gave insight into the filming process for the seals and revealed a storm was closing in on the seal pup after his mother left.
Frozen Planet II returns next Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.

NSCDC Arrests 19 Suspected Crude Oil Thieves in Rivers – THISDAY Newspapers
Posted: at 8:35 am
Blessing Ibunge in Port Harcourt
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Rivers State Command has paraded 19 suspects arrested over their alleged connection to oil theft and illegal dealings in petroleum products in the state.
Parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Port Harcourt, yesterday, the State Commandant, Michael Ogar decried the defiant attitude of oil thieves and those engaging in illegal bunkering activities.
He noted that in spite of the continuous sensitisation and relentless war against economic sabotage in the country, those milking from the nations wealth through illegal oil dealings have blatantly refused to change their ways.
According to Ogar, the Marine and Land Patrol team of the command arrested the 19 suspects at different locations in the state.
Four suspects named: Peter Udo (20), Benjamin Godpower (16), Godgift Nicholas (19) and Goodness Sunday (19) were arrested with One Big wooden boat and a 40 HP outboard engine along Bakana River close to Bakana Community in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
In addition, three suspects named: Jacob Fewu (23), George George (20) and Stanley Bruce (20) were arrested with One wooden boat laden with 10,000 litres of illegaly refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), a 40 HP Outboard Engine used for propelling the boat.
The Marine team in an all-night tactical operations arrested two additional suspects named: Ade Monday (27) and Abiola Gift (29) with One wooden boat, 25 drums (6,250 litres) of illegal refined AGO and One 15 HP outboard engine, he said.
The NSCDC boss also disclosed that the anti-vandal Unit uncovered a building used as dump site for storing locally refined AGO along Cornerstone junction in Ogbogoro, Obio Akpo Local Government Area.
We discovered an underground Tanker containing unquantified litres of locally refined AGO, a Plastic Tank containing about 3,500 litres of AGO and a Pumping Machine. The entire compound is now under seal and manned by our personnel while the Command would continue to chase the culprits till they are arrested and prosecuted accordingly, he added.
In another development, five suspects were arrested at Oyakama community in Ahoada west LGA and Njemanze street in Port Harcourt.
The suspects included: Onorode Daniel (34), Samuel Odirode (32), Charles Okeke (43), Uche (32) and Chinedu Iroanya (36).
Ogar said the suspects were in conveyance of an ash colour Toyota Sequoia SUV with number plate: LAGOS Epe 539 AT laden with about 1,000 litres of AGO, a Golden colour Toyota Camry Car with about 1,500 litres of illegaly refined AGO, an Ash Colour Toyota Camry Car with registration number RIVERS BER 951 MU, a green colour Toyota Camry Car with number plate: RIVERS AH 824 AHD laden with illegaly refined AGO concealed in cellophane and packed in sack bags which totalled 5,000 litres.
Another building close to Akpos Jetty in Abuloma community in Port Harcourt was also uncovered while the Suspects took to their heels upon sighting the NSCDC operatives; a short green and white colour DAF CF 250 Truck with number plate LAGOS EKY 206 XS laden with illegaly refined AGO and Pumping Machine were recovered as exhibits.

Nigel Slaters jam, pickle and relish recipes – The Guardian
Posted: at 8:35 am
At this time of year, I put away damsons, gooseberries and blackcurrants in the freezer. A squirrel-store of fruits that are distinctly seasonal and are pretty much impossible to find in the freezer aisles. In the depths of winter, I rather enjoy an out-of-season gooseberry crumble or a hot damson compote with my breakfast porridge. But my freezer is small and soon filled.
When apricots have finally come down in price, I make jars of glowing jam; when peaches are at their best or the supply of courgettes and beetroot seems never-ending, I will make jam or chutney. If I find a cheap supply of those intensely flavoured tiny cucumbers that are so difficult to track down, they will end up in a homemade pickle with fennel seeds and dill to eat with cheese. A row of glistening jars to last me through the winter.
This summer I grew lavender and scented geraniums like never before (I can usually kill a lavender bush at 20 paces), so their flowers and leaves have ended up stored in jars of sugar to make a scented sprinkle for sponges or shortbread. Rose petals too.
I am not the sort of cook to make hundreds of pots of chutney or pickles, yet there is something rather delightful about opening a kitchen cupboard to find recycled jam jars full of your own handiwork. Recipes you have personalised to your own taste. A homemade pickle can be as sweet or sour as you like; jam can be more softly set than commercial recipes and the chilli heat of a relish can be tweaked to work for you.
There is, to a certain extent, a bit of good housekeeping going on here. When something is in such generous supply that it comes down in price I will make the most of it, picking up a few extra courgettes to make into a pickle or a second and third bag of plums with which to make jam. That said, I make all preserves as a treat rather than a way to rid myself of a cartload of fruit or vegetables. A jar or two of peach chutney or bread and butter pickles is like finding treasure in the cupboard, but I dont want to be eating runner bean relish or marrow jam for the next six months.
You should use sterilised storage jars for all preserves and pickles. Heat the oven to 160C fan/gas mark 4. Remove the rubber seals from your storage jars, pour boiling water into the jars, carefully emptying them and leaving them to dry upside down on a baking sheet or roasting tin. Put the tray into the oven and bake for 15 minutes, then fill and seal as required.
This is one of the few preserves I make every year. My version is softer than most you can buy, rather like the jams you find in the Middle East. Letting the stoned fruit rest overnight under a blanket of sugar is a trick worth following. The sugar softens the fruit, leading to a shorter cooking time and the flavour seems more intense. Use a sugar thermometer from the start. If you dont have one, then chill a couple of saucers in the fridge before you start and follow the instructions here. This is luscious soft-set jam, but if you want something firmer use preserving sugar with added pectin. Make sure your roses are from the garden and unsprayed.
Makes 3 x 350ml storage jarsapricots 1kg, firm, almost ripegranulated sugar 750grose petals 40lemon 1, large
Wipe the apricots, remove any stems, then slice in half and remove their stones. Put the fruit in a large mixing bowl, then sprinkle the granulated sugar over them. Cut the lemon in half, squeeze the juice over the fruit, then toss everything together with a large spoon, so the sugar is wet with juice. Cover the bowl and set aside for three or four hours, or even overnight, in a cool place.
Put a large, heavy-based stainless-steel or enamel saucepan over a low to moderate heat. Add the fruit and sugar and bring to the boil. Lower the heat and leave to bubble gently for about 20 minutes. The jam is ready when it reaches 105C on a sugar thermometer. As soon as the temperature is reached, stir in the rose petals, ladle into sterilised jars and seal tightly.
To test without a thermometer, put a couple of saucers in the fridge. As the fruit becomes tender, put 1 teaspoon of jam on one of the cold saucers. Put it back in the fridge for 2 minutes and, if a skin has formed, the jam is ready.
I was tempted by the deliciously old-fashioned name alone, but I felt I had to have a go at making this sweet-sour pickle after I bought an artisan-made version whose price was more than I wanted to pay. Small cucumbers can be bought from Turkish and Middle Eastern grocery shops.
Makes 1 x 750ml storage jar and 1 smaller oneonions 250g, mediumsmall, crisp cucumbers 500gsalt 1 tbspsoft brown sugar 250gmalt vinegar 100mlcider vinegar 300mlground turmeric 1 tspyellow mustard seeds 1 tbspblack peppercorns 1 tspfennel seeds 2 tspdried chilli flakes tspfennel stalks and flowers a handful (optional)
Peel the onions, slice them into thin rounds, then put them in a stainless steel or china bowl. Slice the cucumbers into rounds about 1cm thick, add them to the onions and sprinkle everything with the salt. Cover and leave for a good couple of hours, overnight it you have time.
Put the soft brown sugar, vinegars, ground turmeric yellow mustard seeds, peppercorns, fennel seeds, chili flakes and fennel stalks and flowers if you are using them into a large saucepan and bring to the boil.
Rinse the cucumber and onions in a colander under the cold tap to remove the salt. Pour the boiling pickling liquor over the vegetables in a bowl, then spoon into jars and seal.
It is something of a blurred line between relish and chutney and Im not sure it makes much difference what you call them, but a general rule of thumb is that a chutney contains some sort of fruit (including dried vine fruits) and a relish is more vegetable based, somewhat finer in texture and is cooked for a shorter time.
This recipe is for those keen to rid themselves of some of their beetroot harvest. It has the mild, hot crunch of mustard seeds and is one that I bring out with a vegetable curry or spoon on to grilled lamb flatbread.
Makes a large jar, about 750mlraw beetroot 325gcarrots 350gginger 50gred chilli 1, medium hotyellow mustard seeds 1 tsplemon 1garlic 6 clovessalt 1 tspblack peppercorns 8cider vinegar 200mlsoft brown sugar 175g
Peel and coarsely grate the beetroot, then put it in a medium sized stainless-steel or enamelled pan. Peel and coarsely grate the carrots, then add to the beetroot.
Peel the ginger, slice it thinly (about the thickness of a pound coin), then cut each slice into matchsticks. Add them to the beetroot and carrot, then thinly slice and add the chilli. (You can remove the seeds or not, as you wish leave them in for a spicier relish.)
Mix in the mustard seeds, the zest of the lemon, finely grated, and the peeled, whole garlic cloves. Add a teaspoon of salt and the whole peppercorns. Halve and squeeze the lemon and add the juice to the pan together with the vinegar and sugar.
Bring to the boil over a moderate heat, stirring gently until the sugar has dissolved and all is glossy then keep it bubbling until the liquid has almost disappeared. Pack into jars and seal. This is best kept in the fridge.
A good chutney with a nice balance of vinegar-sharp fruit and deep sweetness that makes it a good one for cheeses such as caerphilly or properly made farmhouse cheddars. It is quite perfect for the firmer blues too.
Makes 1 x 750ml storage jarpeaches 1kgonions 350g golden raisins 125glight muscovado sugar 250g crushed dried chillies tspyellow mustard seeds 2 tspcider vinegar 150ml malt vinegar 150ml cinnamon stick 1, broken in two
Quarter the peaches and discard the stones. If the fruit is large, cut each piece once more. Peel and roughly chop the onions.
Put the fruit and the onions into a large heavy bottomed steel or enamelled pan. Add the raisins, sugar, chillies, mustard seeds, vinegar and cinnamon stick. Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes. You want a chutney that is both sour and sweet to the taste, so tweak it to your taste, but it is worth remembering that the flavour will mellow as it keeps.
Pour into hot and sterilised jars and seal tightly.
These sugars are such a simple but effective way to use the many varieties of scented geranium (pelargonium) leaves or lavender buds. Make sure your leaves are dry and from a variety that smells only of rose or lemon when rubbed. (If the leaves dont remind you of Turkish delight, then dont use them.) The oils present in the leaves will gently scent your sugar over the following few weeks, leaving you with fragrant crystals to scatter over shortbread or almond cookies as they leave the oven, or over a sponge cake.
Makes a medium-sized jargranulated or caster sugar 300gscented geranium leaves 12, small, or lavender buds 2 tbsp
Make sure there are no lumps in the sugar and that your storage jars and leaves or flowers are completely dry. Layer the sugar and leaves in a storage jar, seal and keep in a dry, dark place for several days before opening and using.
If you are making lavender sugar, distribute the lavender buds through the sugar and seal. Sieve out the flowers before using. (If you use whole sprigs of lavender it is easier to remove than the picked flowers.)
