Prime Minister remembers meeting with the Queen, speaks highly of King Charles – Newstalk ZB
Posted: September 9, 2022 at 5:51 pm
The Prime Minister has spoken highly of New Zealand's new head of state.
King Charles The Third has now taken over Sovereignty, following the death of Queen Elizabeth The Second earlier today.
Her Majesty passed away aged 96 at Balmoral Castle, surrounded by family.
Jacinda Ardern told Heather du Plessis-Allan like his mother, King Charles has a real affinity with New Zealand.
She says during the times she spoke with the Royals, it was during things like lockdown, during royal visits and in the aftermath of March 15.
Officials are looking at options for a moment of silence.
The Prime Minister says they want to ensure it's a time when people can pose and take part nationally - and details will likely be put out in the next 24 to 48 hours.

New Zealands period of mourning for the Queen, and what comes next – The Guardian
Posted: at 5:51 pm
Most New Zealanders have never witnessed a change of monarch in their lifetimes, and the ascension of a new head of state has prompted questions about how the country will mourn Queen Elizabeth II and what will change under King Charles III.
The country has entered a period of mourning that is likely to last for a fortnight, says the governor-general, Dame Cindy Kiro, who is the crowns representative in New Zealand. But it will not be marked by business closures, canceled events or a public holiday.
A national memorial service is at least 10 days away, and will follow the Queens funeral in the UK. Flags at government buildings will fly at half-mast until the period of mourning is over.
The exception will be on Sunday, when flags will fly at full-mast during a proclamation day for the King that will be marked by a ceremony in the capital, Wellington.
By law, Charles became King of New Zealand immediately upon Queen Elizabeths death; the formalities on Sunday will simply acknowledge his ascension.
Kiro and Jacinda Ardern, New Zealands prime minister, are expected to travel to London next week for the Queens funeral on 18 September.
New Zealand is among a minority of Commonwealth nations 15 of 54 to still have the British monarch as its head of state. On Friday, the governor general emphasised a list of what would not change under a new king; oaths taken by officials were still valid, and the same flag, passports, emblem, anthem, and governance arrangements would remain, Kiros website said.
The biggest shift for many New Zealanders will be the change in name of the public holiday they have marked since 1953 from Queens Birthday to Kings Birthday.
The date wont alter; Kings Birthday will still be marked on the Monday after the first weekend in June, according to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
And the countrys Reserve Bank said Queen Elizabeths face would remain on the countrys notes and coins for years.
It will be several years before we need to introduce coins featuring King Charles the Third, and longer until stocks of $20 notes are exhausted, the central bank said in a statement, referring to the currency items that bear the Queens face.
During the mourning period, New Zealanders can pay their respects at condolence books laid out at locations throughout the country, or leave flowers at parliament. A gun salute will mark the Queens death in Wellington on Friday evening.
The 16th Field Regiment will fire 96 rounds one round for every year of Her Majestys life.

‘She defined an era’: Leaders including Biden, Putin and Macron pay tribute to the Queen – Sky News
Posted: at 5:51 pm
Leaders around the world have paid tribute to the Queen, with Joe Biden saying she was more than a monarch - "she defined an era".
As they did so, landmarks across the globe shone in red, white and blue or went dark as a mark of respect, and flowers and wreaths were laid at UK embassies where flags flew at half-mast.
The Queen's death was felt keenly around the world, but especially so in the 14 other realms where she was head of state.
Those nations, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica and other Caribbean nations, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, now have Charles as their King.
In Washington DC, where the American flag was lowered to half-mast on public buildings, the US president said "in a world of constant change, she was a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Britons".
Mr Biden said she was a "stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy" who "helped make our relationship special".
In his statement, the president said the Queen "charmed us with her wit, moved us with her kindness, and generously shared with us her wisdom" when he and the first lady visited last year.
"Her legacy will loom large in the pages of British history, and in the story of our world," he added.
In New York, billboards in Times Square displayed the Queen's portrait, flowers were laid outside the British Consulate General, the Empire State Building was bathed in purple light and at Tea & Sympathy, a restaurant selling classic British favourites, people came for a cup of tea as a way of paying their respects.
"It's like your mum died, because we've grown up with her, and her family," Nicky Perry, the restaurant's owner, said. "I've had so many people turn up here today in floods of tears. Men. Americans."
At the US Open tennis tournament, fans and players held a moment's silence before the start of the women's semi-final.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: "It was with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of the passing of Canada's longest-reigning Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
"She was a constant presence in our lives - and her service to Canadians will forever remain an important part of ourcountry's history."
Speaking to reporters, he added that the Queen was "one of my favourite people in the world".
"I will miss her so," he said.

In Australia, plans were announced to illuminate the sails of the Sydney Opera House, but the Queen's passing also revived a longstanding debate among republicans on ending the country's association with the 1,000-year-old instution.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the Queen's "historic reign and a long life devoted to duty, family, faith and service".
"This is a loss we all feel, for few have known a world without Queen Elizabeth II. In her seven remarkable decades on the throne, Her Majesty was a rare and reassuring constant amidst rapid change," he said on Twitter.
"Through the noise and tumult of the years, she embodied an exhibited a timeless decency and an enduring calm."
Adam Brandt, the leader of the Greens Party in Australia and a prominent republican, was accused of being disrespectful, even by some fellow republicans, after he said: "Our thoughts are with her family and all who loved her. Now Australia must move forward."
In New Zealand, a performance of the Haka by a group of young people at the Auckland War Memorial was one of many tributes paid.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she was woken up in the early hours of the morning by a police officer shining a torch into her bedroom to tell her that the Queen had died.
"When that torch light came into my room I knew immediately what it meant," Ms Ardern said.
She said that like many other people, she was feeling not only deep sadness but also deep gratitude.
Ms Ardern said: "The last days of the Queen's life captures who she was in so many ways - working until the very end on behalf of the people she loved."
Bermuda premier David Burt noted that her reign "has spanned decades of such immense change for the United Kingdom and the world".
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said that since the Queen was crowned in 1953, she had visited the island every decade until 2002.
He added that the Jamaican flag will be flown at half-mast on all public buildings for 12 days in tribute.
Papua New Guinea's prime minister, James Marape, said she was fondly known as "Mama Queen because she was the matriarch of our country".
Tuvalu's acting prime minister, Simon Kofe, said: "We were fortunate to have the Queen visit us... and we recognise her incredible commitment to service."
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said: "Her state visit to Ireland in 2011 marked a crucial step in the normalisation of relations with our nearest neighbour. That visit was a great success, largely because of the many gracious gestures and warm remarks made by the Queen."
In Paris, the Eiffel Tower went dark at the stroke of midnight and President Emmanuel Macron posted on social media: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II embodied the British nation's continuity and unity for over 70 years.
"I remember her as a friend of France, a kind-hearted queen who has left a lasting impression on her country and her century."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted: "On behalf of the Ukrainian people we extend sincere condolences to the @RoyalFamily, the entire United Kingdom and the Commonwealth over this irreparable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you."
In Berlin, flowers and candles were laid outside the British embassy and Chancellor Olaf Scholz said: "We mourn Queen Elizabeth II. She was a role model and inspiration for millions, including here in Germany.
"Her commitment to German-British reconciliation after the horrors of World War II will not be forgotten. She will be missed, not least her wonderful sense of humour."
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, whose 50-year reign is now the longest in Europe, called the Queen "a towering figure among European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all".
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that "as the United Kingdom's longest-lived and longest-reigning head of state, Queen Elizabeth II was widely admired for her grace, dignity, and dedication around the world".
He added that she had been "a reassuring presence throughout decades of sweeping change, including the decolonization of Africa and Asia and the evolution of the Commonwealth".
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he extended his condolences to Britain for the "irreparable loss" of the Queen.
Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences to the Royal Family, noting that the Queen was the first UK monarch to visit China, in 1986, and added: "Her death is a great loss to the British people."
Pope Francis said he was deeply saddened by the Queen's death and offered his condolences to her family, including her successor, King Charles.
The pontiff said in a telegram to the King: "I willingly join all who mourn her loss in praying for the late Queen's eternal rest, and in paying tribute to her life of unstinting service to the good of the Nation and the Commonwealth."
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as a stalwart of our times.
"She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life.
"Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of UK in this sad hour."
Pakistani Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif said he was "deeply grieved at the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Pakistan joins the UK & other Commonwealth nations in mourning her death. My heartfelt condolences to the royal family, people & government of the UK."
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo said: "The Ghanaian people have very fond memories of the two visits she made to Ghana during her reign, and, on both occasions, we remember the friendliness, elegance, style and sheer joy she brought to the performance of her duties."
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute, saying: "Her Majesty was an extraordinary and world-renowned public figure who lived a remarkable life. Her life and legacy will be fondly remembered by many around the world. The Queen's commitment and dedication during her 70 years on the throne remains a noble and virtuous example to the entire world."
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said: "The story of modern Nigeria will never be complete without a chapter on Queen Elizabeth ll, a towering global personality and an outstanding leader. She dedicated her life to making her nation, the Commonwealth and the entire world a better place."
On European Union buildings around Europe, EU flags were lowered to half-mast.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said on Twitter that the Queen had "witnessed war and reconciliation in Europe and beyond, and deep transformations of our planet and societies".
"She was a beacon of continuity throughout these changes, never ceasing to display a calmness and dedication that gave strength to many. May she rest in peace."
And European Council President Charles Michel said "she never failed to show us the importance of lasting values in a modern world with her service and commitment."
In Venice, "God Save the Queen" was played outside the Italian city's Festival Buildings.
In Brazil, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking Rio de Janeiro was lit up in the red, blue and white as the country announced three days of national mourning "as a sign of sorrow".
Former US presidents Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and George W Bush were also among those who released statements.
Mr Obama said: "Time and again, we were struck by her warmth, the way she put people at ease, and how she brought her considerable humour and charm to moments of great pomp and circumstance.
"Like so many, Michelle and I are grateful to have witnessed Her Majesty's dedicated leadership, and we are awed by her legacy of tireless, dignified public service."

Mother Freaks Out After Finding Out How Much Her Childfree Cousin Spent On A Vacation, Calls Her ‘Disgusting’ – Bored Panda
Posted: at 5:50 pm
Our familys love grounds us. It increases our confidence and self-esteem, adds more stability to life, and provides a better understanding of social interactions.
But as much as Reddit user OperaJunkie would like to enjoy the company of her closest kin, she cant. At least not at the moment.
To explain her situation and possibly get some support, the 26-year-old made a post on the subreddit r/Childfree, where she detailed a recent conflict with her cousin.
It all started when the woman asked OperaJunkie to look after her kids. The Redditor refused because she had a vacation approaching and as the two continued talking, the cousin asked how much OperaJunkie is spending on her trip. $9,000 was the answer. And the woman was so surprised by it that she rallied the whole family against OperaJunkie, criticizing her for stupid spending.

Such conflicts might be more common than we think. A research team from Michigan State University recently discovered over one in five Michigan adults do not want children.
We found that 21.6% of adults, or about 1.7 million people, in Michigan do not want children and therefore are childfree. Thats more than the population of Michigans nine largest cities, said Zachary Neal, associate professor in MSUs psychology department and co-author of the study.
While the study was conducted in just one state, according to the 2021 census, Michigan is demographically similar to the United States as a whole. Because of this, Neal said, if the pattern holds up nationally, it would mean 50 to 60 million Americans are childfree.
People especially women who say they dont want children are often told theyll change their mind, but the study found otherwise, Jennifer Watling Neal, associate professor in the psychology department at MSU and co-author of the study, added. People are making the decision to be childfree early in life, most often in their teens and twenties. And, its not just young people claiming they dont want children. Women who decided in their teens to be childfree are now, on average, nearly 40 and still do not have children.
Because so many people are childfree, the researchers said this group warrants more attention from the general public. Following the U.S. Supreme Courts overturning of Roe v. Wade, a large number of Americans are now at risk of being forced to have children despite not wanting them, Watling Neal said.
While its impossible to say who is right and who is wrong in this situation from an outsiders point of view, people noted that some things (like the use of the word breeder) might indicate both parties crossed each others line.
Without pointing any fingers, its interesting to note that Dr. Kathleen Kelley Reardon, USC Marshall School professor and author of Comebacks at Work: Using Conversation to Master Confrontation, estimates that 75% of how people treat us is under our own control. Because of this she advocates taking a different approach if you want to experience new, more positive results with these types of conflicts in the future.
Communication is like chess where every move one person makes influences the choices of the other, Reardon said. A good rule of thumb is to not say what you would normally say in response to any provocation. If you usually meet a challenge with a challenge, try asking a question instead. If you let someone go on and on and that leads to anger, link something you have to say to his or her topic and then change to another one.
If you think youre being blamed for something, instead of getting your back up, try saying, Theres some truth to that or I hadnt thought of it that way but I see your point. In other words, tweak what you normally do.

Woman Who Unpopularly Decided To Never Have Children Reflects On It Now That She’s 85 Years Old – Bored Panda
Posted: at 5:50 pm
Even though an astonishing number of people dont feel, and have never felt, the urge to become a parent, the pressure to have kids is still tremendous. Any person who has made this profound decision about leading a child-free life can tell you its usually met in two different ways. One, people mutter a series of condescending phrases such as oh or youll change your mind. Two, they actually take you seriously and instantly warn you that youll be lonely and regret it when youre old.
Speaking of the latter scenario, one open letter on the Childfree subreddit put this notion to bed once and for all. An 85-year-old widow addressed the young people of this community, shared her experience, and proudly stated that she has zero regrets about her choice. Being married for 50 years, she offered her perspective and some validating words of wisdom.
If I could go back in time, would I do it again? (being childfree), 100% yes. I would live the same life one thousand times, the woman wrote. Her story sparked a discussion in the comments below, with responses ranging from kudos to appreciation. Scroll down to read the story in full and the reactions that followed.

In the past few decades, accusatory statements have started flying around blaming younger generations for having fewer kids than ever. According to the World Economic Forum, fertility rates have steadily decreased worldwide for the last 70 years, with a total 50% decline. Small wonder then, why childfree people are met with resistance from society.
The reasons for people having fewer children are plenty: womens empowerment, particularly in education and the workforce, lower child mortality rates, and the increased cost of raising children. The dire reality is that kids are expensive in an economy thats only getting more and more costly. They are a luxury many simply cannot afford.
Aside from these factors, theres a running trend among childfree individuals to say they opt out of parenthood for no reason in particular. A survey by Pew Research Center found that a majority (56%) of American non-parents younger than 50 said its unlikely they will ever have kids simply because they dont want to, while others reported medical, financial, or environmental reasons.
While everybody has their own motives for staying childfree, unfortunately, those who decide not to have children are still subjected to stigma. This usually stems from the fact that many people are still being raised to follow the usual path of getting an education, a job, a house, a spouse, and, ultimately, children. But as the woman wrote in her letter, it doesnt have to be this way.
To gain more insight on the topic, we reached out to Erin Spurling, a writer, editor, and founder of Curiously Childfree. She set up this space to build a supportive community where she can leave a mark, advocate for change, help people feel heard and connect with each other.
According to her, sharing experiences with others can definitely help people to feel more confident in their decision. For women, in particular, we very much have a window of opportunity to have our own biological children, and I think sometimes even those who choose to be childfree can worry about regretting it later, she told Bored Panda.
That combined with family and friends (and sometimes strangers) always telling us we will regret it can be a daunting thought. Hearing from someone much older who has chosen the same path as you can be very reassuring.
The number of childfree communities is steadily growing. No wonder, as people who consistently deal with social stigma are sick and tired of others telling them reasons they should have kids, how much theyll rue their decision, or how selfish they are for failing to pass along their genes and contribute to society. When friends and family fail them, the internet steps up to offer support.
Finding like-minded people absolutely helps you to feel safer, better connected, and it helps when handling difficult conversations. Its exactly the same for us as it is for parents, Erin said. Often, parents will be part of mother-and-baby groups, for example, where they can meet people living a similar life and experiences to them.
Connecting with childfree people is the same, you both know you have a shared experience, how you are treated in the world is similar, your opinions and struggles are likely to be the same, she added. Plus, you know you wont be judged for your choice or have your opinions dismissed by someone else who is childfree.
Erin pointed out that, unfortunately, we still live in a world where women can find themselves feeling excluded for having children and equally excluded for not. Its a strange combination damned if we do, damned if we dont.
Although theres an evident change in attitudes where more and more people are starting to respect individuals who are childfree by choice, a long road still lies ahead. Id just like to remind anyone who is childfree that they arent alone. It might feel like theres nobody else out there like you, but I promise there is.
Make the decisions that are right for you (and your partner if you have one), and remember that many people have wonderful, fulfilling lives without children. You get to decide what a good life looks like for you, just like this brilliant lady did.
And as scary as it might feel to be open about being childfree, sometimes taking that step to sharing it with a new acquaintance can give them the courage to share too, and youll find you have a new friend, Erin concluded.

Guy Comes Up With A Brilliant Plan To Intentionally Drink Before Family Gatherings To Dodge Babysitting Duties Which Usually Fall On Him – Bored Panda
Posted: at 5:49 pm
Recently, a childfree man turned to the AITA community for advice, where his story received a lot of attention. The author who goes by the handle Low-Ad-1414 explained how since he is the cool uncle in the family, his older siblings get to dump their rather difficult kids onto him.
Im not qualified or even capable to watch my brothers 3 kids by myself as well as they need, plus their cousins (my sisters kids) also want to spend time with their cousins so Im sitting there by myself watching 5 kids aged 4-8 by myself, 3 of which may have special needs, he explained.
As if that wasnt enough, my brother will give me a physical paper list of parental duties, a backpack with stuff for the kids, then turn his phone off in front of me then walk away after dumping his kids on me, Low-Ad-1414 wrote.
For this reason, the author came up with a way to evade babysitting, even if that meant intentional drinking at family gatherings and being labeled a drunk.

The Future of Nanotech, the World’s Tiniest Industry – Entrepreneur
Posted: at 5:48 pm
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Nanotechnology refers to the scientific study, research and reengineering of the properties of atoms and molecules. There's a great deal of controversy around this science, as it is intended to reshape the building blocks of matter. Like with all growing fields, there are costs and benefits, and due to its infinitely broad usage for applications, nanotech will impact our daily life in a profound way we have only started to see.
Introduced to the world in 1959 by physicist Richard Feynman, nanotechnology was conceptualized as synthesis through the reconstitution of atoms and molecules.
Over the past decade-and-a-half, nanotech has been one of the globe's fastest-growing industries, evolving each year significantly with great new applications. We've seen incredible innovation in energy, robotics, agriculture, health, computation, military intelligence and manufacturing. Those are just a small sampling of the sectors in which nanotech has been a great leader in advancement.
Related: Forget Toothpaste. This Nifty Toothbrush Scrubs Teeth Clean With Nanotech.
Through particle rescaling and manipulation, nanotech creates chemical bonds that are sometimes hundreds of times more potent than steel. These bonds increase a material's surface area, allowing for more atoms to interact with it, making the material more robust, more conductive and more malleable than its natural-sized counterparts. How the particles are manipulated affects how dense or light, big or small, visible or transparent, reflective or absorptive to waves a nanotech product is. The objects of particle manipulation are referred to as nanomaterials.
Nanomaterials are classified into two main categories: naturally occurring (such as blood hemoglobin) and artificially developed (such as quantum dots). Of the artificially generated nanomaterials, there are four common types: carbon-based, metal-based, dendrimers and nanocomposites. While carbon-based and metal-based nanomaterials are formed through the chemical manipulation of elements to derive micro-matter constructs, dendrimers either expand outwardly from a strong core or inwardly from a solid outer shell, and nanocomposites combine different nanomaterials and larger-scale high-volume materials. To be considered a nanomaterial, the engineering must operate within the parameters of a nanoscale's nanometer, which translates to a billionth of a meter.
Nanotechnology is already widely present in our daily life. You may not realize it, but it is in everything from textiles to food packaging to transportation. For example, in recent years, nanotech has been used to create lightweight road, sea, air and space vehicles. In the medical sector, nanotech has allowed for better imaging tools, diagnostic technology and even within medicine itself, including delivering antigens to compromised cells while avoiding healthy cells. And how was that accomplished? The answer might seem like it's out of the pages of sci-fi-- but it's happening today.
Nanobots are nanoscopic machines programmed to deliver a specific task. They've been functional on both bioorganic matter and inorganic matter and have been central in many of today's significant advancements in virology, clean energy, water filtration and 3D printing. Nanobots can deliver medicine, move as a unit to improve the source collection of wind and solar resources, clean contaminated water and link together to replicate a 3D object and enact the point of its function.
Currently, nanotech is researching several world-changing initiatives. Self-repair of structural surfaces is now in the testing phase. This could be revolutionary for transportation infrastructure, allowing nanotech to bind to damaged roads, bridges and railways to correct structural issues and material deficits.
Synthesis of enzymes is also in the works, as is synthetic ethanol. A finite resource naturally derived from fossils, ethanol has various uses, from fuel to household cleaning products to acting as a binding agent for personal care products.
Robust rechargeable industrial battery systems are another avenue of exploration for which nanotech actively seeks real-world testing. Imagine the generation of an infinite amount of electricity. This may soon be possible through nanobots deployed as self-adaptive sensors, working in tandem with nanomaterials fabricated into self-servicing generators capable of powering cities with environment-friendly energy.
Another investigational innovation is replacing computer microchips with nanochips capable of fitting your computer and phone's entire memory on infinitesimal storage units. Since nanotransistors already exist and have been commercially operating since 2014, we may not be so far off from this development.
Gene-sequencing and genetic engineering are incorporating nanotech in illness eradication and the study of tissue-and-organ regeneration. While this is one of the farthest from practical implementations of nanotech's practical applications, it poses significant promise. We've poised to eventually engineer sequencing at the gene level to help eliminate hereditary illnesses and replace the sequences with positive characteristics and traits.
While it can be argued that the future of nanotech is happening now, we have barely scratched the surface. For example, the meeting of nanotechnology with self-realizing AI has long been theorized for its potential benefits in predicting, resolving and managing environmental crises and space exploration through analyzing universal patterns and behaviors. Though still far away, the applications to make climate concerns a thing of the past or develop new climate systems on otherwise inhabitable planets are pretty plausible.
Projected to reach $33.63 billion by 2030, from its current $1.76 billion market size value, nanotech is well on its way to trending as one of the current fastest-growing sciences, not just due to its percentage increase, but in its continued collaboration with industries across the board, and sharing budget of their market share. Future applications are genuinely limitless through nanotechnology, and living during this age of exploration is exciting.

Are You FIRE Material?
Does the idea of tossing the conventional retirement age of 65 out the windowor at least trimming a few years off sound appealing? Join the slew of millennials embracing the extreme-saving lifestyle. Begin with holding onto 70 percent of your yearly income and when you reach approximately 25 times your yearly expenses, the FIRE method says you can quit your day job. Investing some of this money in equities or real estate is a common way to finance a comfortable lifestyle over the next 30 years.
My acquaintances in the FIRE movement have had a goal in common: They dont want to become their parents, says Craig, who authored Piece by PieceTM A Commonsense Approach to a Secure Retirement. They have seen their parents working and struggling into their golden years without any gold.
One key to FIRE method success is having a partner to keep you motivated. Making a budget and sticking to it while earning as much money as possible is crucial. This may require a job promotion, adding a second one, or creating additional revenue streams through side hustles. A final major component is investing a larger portion of retirement savings than the average person is comfortable with. Basically, go big and do it early.
