Italy’s hostility to Nato is building – The Spectator

Posted: May 25, 2022 at 4:11 am

The war in Ukraine has caused an unholy convergence of the left and right in Italy. While there is nothing formal so far about this alliance of enemies, it nevertheless threatens to destroy the unity of Nato.

The most high-profile participant is -Matteo Salvini, leader of the Lega the party with the second-highest number of MPs in Italys parliament which is invariably defined as far right. Salvini, who has been one of Vladimir Putins strongest supporters outside Russia, condemned the invasion of Ukraine and has now come out as a pacifist. He opposes Finland and Sweden joining Nato, or sending more arms to Ukraine, on the grounds that both would make peace less likely. Giuseppe Conte, leader of the alt-left Five Star Movement, which has the most MPs, is also on board as is a chunk of the old left, especially if former communists.

This coalition is hugely popular, not just with Italian extremists, but with Italians in general. Its most ardent supporters, who include most Italian journalists it sometimes seems, demand above all that Joe Biden and Boris Johnson those warmongering Anglo--Saxons agree that Nato countries should stop sending arms to Ukraine. This would force Volodymyr Zelensky, they insist, to start peace talks with Russia even if it means he loses a large chunk of his country.

Indeed, this was precisely the message Italys unelected Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, sensing the power of the sentiment in his country, took to Washington when he met President Biden on 10 May. As a right-wing Italian daily headline put it: Draghi warns Biden: Europe wants peace.

The Russian media bombardment of Italy has been intense this past month but it would be wrong to blame this for Italys left-right anti-war alliance. The talk shows have been full of fanatical Russian journalists spewing out the standard script via Zoom about Nazi Ukraine and Nasty Nato while smirking and rolling their eyes at anyone in the studio who disagrees with them.

Putins foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, even appeared on an Italian TV talk show for his only interview outside Russia. He delivered a 45-minute monologue which came to life briefly when the journalist finally asked him a question: how come Zelensky is a Nazi if he is a Jew? Lavrov retorted that Hitler had Jewish roots and the Jews are the worst anti-Semites of the lot. This was a lie too far even for Putin, who then gave a rare apology to the Israeli government.

Italys parliament has unveiled an inquiry into the extent of Russian (and Chinese) disinformation in Italys mainstream and social media. This has caused a similar uproar to the one that greeted Bidens Disinformation Board. In both cases, the aim is to monitor disinformation it is claimed but the danger is this will turn into censorship as well.

Obviously the Russians are trying to influence public opinion in Europe and in particular in Italy. It was neutral to start with in both world wars and it was a key ideological battleground in the Cold War, as it had the largest Communist party outside the Soviet bloc, bankrolled by the KGB. Italy wobbled then. It is wobbling again.

But these Russian journalists on Italian TV are in many ways preaching to the converted. Much of what they say is a more extreme version of what many Italians already believe. That does not mean Italians generally refuse to accept the basic truths: that Russian troops have invaded a sovereign state, massacred its civilians and destroyed its cities. But Italians do believe Nato and thus America and its sidekick Britain is at least partly to blame for the war. In the weasel words of Pope Francis, the West provoked Russia by barking at its door. Never mind that Nato is a defensive, not an offensive, alliance, which former communist countries have been desperate to join because they are terrified of invasion by Russia.

Italian disdain for bully-boy Anglo-Saxon behaviour runs deep, even though it was the Anglo-Saxons who liberated them from fascism in 1945. Many Italians believe that America and Britain are hellbent not on defending Ukraine but on using it to defeat Russia and so cause a third world war. Proof of this according to the prevailing TV talk show view is the belief that America and Britain have shared intelligence which helped Ukraine kill Russian generals and sink the Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea fleet, and are thus already at war with Russia. America and Britain have, after all, confirmed that they are providing Ukraine with intelligence.

Italian opinion polls make grim reading for anyone who believes as do Biden, Johnson and perhaps Zelensky that the only way to get Putin to the peace table is by force i.e. more sanctions and more weapons. A majority of Italians (56 per cent) think Bidens America is taking too much of a bullish and blinkered approach on Ukraine, and that Italy and the EU should develop a separate policy. Only 26 per cent think America is defending democracy and Europe, and that arming Ukraine is the right way to confront Putin. Nearly two-thirds of Italians (62 per cent) think the West must at all costs find a way to open peace talks, while only a quarter (26 per cent) think we must first defeat Russia militarily.

Half think sending more arms to Ukraine is wrong and only a quarter (24 per cent) think it is right. Less than half (44 per cent) think Finland and Sweden should join Nato as soon as possible. While the majority are in favour of sanctions (though not on gas, nearly half of which comes from Russia) only 14 per cent think sanctions are useful.

But Russian journalists are not to blame. The reason why so many Italians think this way is their catastrophic experiment with fascism, which has made them paranoid about war. The Italian medias default position is instinctive anti-Americanism and hostility to Nato, which, despite Italy being a member, is understood to be run by trigger-happy America and Britain.

On 6 May, Zelensky gave a speech over Zoom to the foreign affairs thinktank Chatham House, in which he revealed his latest preconditions for peace talks. These included the restoration by Russia of Ukraines borders to how they were prior to the invasion on 24 February. He did not mention Crimea. The next day, Die Welt published an interview with Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg in which he said that Nato has not recognised and never will recognise Crimea as Russian. This was manna from heaven to the Italian media who translated recognise as accept. Italian journalists claimed that the Nato chief had deliberately slapped down Zelenskys tentative attempt to get peace talks started to prolong and escalate the war.

It was wall-to-wall headline news in Italy and nowhere else for days. How dare the Americans drag Italy and Europe to the edge of the abyss? Even when it was pointed out that Zelensky had simply not mentioned Crimea because he treats Crimea as an issue to be parked on one side for the moment it made no difference. Nor did the fact that not even China recognises Crimea as Russian, or that Stoltenberg had spelled out in his interview that it was up to Ukraine and no one else to decide what peace terms it was prepared to accept.

Nonetheless, many of Italys TV journalists and their guests are still talking about this fake news as proof of Natos desire for war with Russia at all costs. As one of the most ubiquitous left-wing anti-war pundits put it on a talk show hosted by the ex-communist daughter of Italys best known Cold War communist leader, Enrico Berlinguer, Nato is toying with the lives of hundreds of millions of Europeans. The question western politicians must consider is whether hundreds of millions of Europeans believe that to be true.

Nato’s united front is crumbling now that Putin has been humiliated in Ukraine – The Telegraph

Posted: at 4:11 am

A quarter of a year has now passed since Vladimir Putin sent his tanks into Ukraine. And the first drafts of history have already been written. Their rough conclusions seem to go along the following lines.

First, to add to Talleyrands famous phrase, Putin has committed both a crime and a blunder. The Russian military has shown itself to be corrupt and inefficient. The Ukrainians have shown themselves to be quite astonishingly stalwart defenders of their homeland. And the West has shown itself to be unpredictably united.

Of course, the problem with first drafts of history is that, while they may be finished with history, history is not finished with them. The conflict in Ukraine could still go in any number of directions. And while a Russian victory now looks unlikely, it is not obvious that Ukraine will emerge with its territory intact. Putin himself may yet act as dictators can when cornered. And while much of the world moves on, it is perfectly possible that the invasion of Ukraine becomes a conflict of attrition which goes on for a long time to come.

Yet it is on the question of the West that I am particularly uncertain about the first drafts currently circulating.

In some ways it is true that the Western alliances especially Nato have never looked stronger or more united. For 30 years, we had discussions of whither Nato. I took part in many of them myself. Well, the answer is the one that was staring us in the face all along. Any and all questions about the point of Nato fell apart the moment the Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine. The applications for membership from Sweden and other countries are a fine reminder of that fact. The swiftness with which the Western banking system and political sanction systems snapped into place was likewise a rather impressive moment of unity.

And yet, for all the talk of the West acting in concert, when it comes to responding to Putins aggression, the picture is far more fractious and becoming more so. As far as I can see, there are three or four factions within what we might still call the Western alliance, and their various positions appear to be diverging as the war drags on.

First are those countries, including the UK, which foresaw Russias aggression and acted swiftly to support and arm our Ukrainian allies. It is this part of the Western alliance which is presenting the world with a vision of a united front. It is also this part that is most clear in its view that Putin must be seen to fail because, as President Zelensky put it yesterday, brute force must not be allowed to rule the world.

But other camps remain. They have not fallen into line behind the likes of the UK, as some had expected. There are those who are indebted, not to say compromised, by their recent arrangements with Russia. Despite its promises of change, the most important country in Europe Germany is still severely compromised, from the top of its politics down, by decades-long cosying up to Putin. For energy reasons, and much more, there is still a strong strain of thought in Berlin which disdains what the British are doing in Ukraine.

They would like to go back to the status quo ante, to be able to import Russian energy cheaply and pass those gains on to German taxpayers, the better to grandstand about green energy and much more. Their promises of rearmament have so far come to little. The prolongation of the conflict has not encouraged them to shift faster away from their prior approach, but to drag their heels and hope that the old world can be restored. Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, has hesitated while others have acted.

Then there is the camp of the Elyse and the president there who believes that, if he keeps a line open with Putin, he might in some way solve the conflict. It is understandable that President Zelensky and others have lost patience with President Macron. For the French leader has done more than act as a middleman and he has done more than play both sides. He has dared to give advice to the Ukrainians such as (in a speech earlier this month) warning them not to give in to temptation of humiliation or of the spirit of revenge.

It is easy to sit in Paris and tell Ukrainians not to feel vengeful towards Russia. The Russians tanks did not roll into the French capital. Russian troops have not been committing war crimes in French towns and cities. Nevertheless, Macron seems to be limbering up to play the negotiating middleman the person willing to offer up a portion of another nations territory, in a deal which he would never accept were the territory his own.

What makes all this much more difficult now is that there is a definite sense most especially in Washington that an opportunity has arisen to tie down Russia. This is the final camp. These are people who seem to see Putins slip-up as the perfect moment to not just encourage a Russian defeat but to enable a Kremlin catastrophe, perhaps by miring its forces in a conflict that they can never win.

A weakened Putin would undeniably have certain advantages. It would be good if he is no threat for some decades to come. But this theory forgets. firstly. that a prolonged conflict is easy to wish on people from thousands of miles away, less agreeable for the citizens of the Donbas and other regions. It also ignores the other consequences of this war continuing, including the impact of Russias blockade of Ukrainian food exports.

And if the point of this strategy is to somehow push Putin from office, that is simply not in the Wests power, even if it was agreed to be a desirable objective. Russian history suggests that palace coups do not always end bloodlessly. The US has a plan for how to get the nukes out of Pakistan if the Islamists ever take over that country. Does anyone have a plan for how to secure Russias nuclear sites if there is a putsch and internecine war at the top of Russian politics? The people urging regime change in Moscow ought to hope there is such a plan.

So the Western alliance is not as cohesive as we might like to think. Yes, we have been shocked by Putin this year. Yes we have been appalled by his actions. But about the question of what to do? That remains deeply unclear. The West is united in horror. But we are divided over what to do in its face.

Childfree Humor: 35 Jokes And Memes By People Who Don’t Regret Their Childfree Lifestyle – Bored Panda

Posted: at 4:10 am

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found that the US birth rate fell by 4% from 2019 to 2020, the sharpest single-year decline in almost 50 years, and the lowest number of births since 1979. With more and more people passing on the prospect of having children, childfree people are still seen with a fair share of stigma by society.

With so much pressure to experience parenthood and the joys and challenges that come with it, people who consciously choose not to do so have to find ways to build resilience and inner strength to stand up for themselves.

One such way is not taking things too seriously to begin with. Just like this Facebook page titled Childfree Humor which is created for people who don't care much for kids and want to have a laugh about it.

The page is home to almost 94k followers and it even has a humorous Etsy shop with bold and sarcastic childfreedom-related shirts. Scroll down below through a selection of Childfree Humor posts that range from painfully hilarious to all too relatable.

Dog Mom Vents About Being Excluded From Mother’s Day Outing, Throws A Tantrum When Friend Tries To Explain That It’s Not The Same As Having Children -…

Posted: at 4:10 am

Animals are definitely one of the best things in our lives. Pretty much the same as kids. Some people, however, believe that they are the same, although, of course, things are much more complicated with children and most parents are well aware of this.

But still, there is a category of people who are so fond of their wonderful doggos that they even identify with the nickname dog dads or dog moms. One of these women will be discussed in our story.

More specifically, the Original Poster in the AITA Reddit community was a longtime friend of one of these dog moms and the post has so far racked up over 3.5K upvotes, as well as 625 different comments. Most of the commenters supported the OP however, lets go in order.

More info: Reddit

So, the OP and her friend Leila have known each other for a long time, since middle school. Together they were friends with five other women who had already had children for a long time, while the OP and Leila just had furbabies instead cats and dogs, respectively.

On Mothers Day their group usually has a party although the OP didnt particularly like to participate, as her friends with children mostly discussed their offspring and various things related to them, while the OP was not very familiar with diapers, night feedings, first steps and so on.

But she still took part in these meetings and this went on for many years, until the children grew up, and the parents began to gather for outings with husbands and parents like one big friendly family.

But Leila eventually became a real dog mom. She decided to stay childfree in her youth, and shortly before that, she divorced her husband because he had changed his point of view about having children. And then Leila got a wonderful doggo named Lemon. She spoiled him in every possible way, dressed him up in beautiful clothes and generally treated him like a baby.

For example, she sent greeting cards on his behalf, threw him birthday parties and emphasized that she was also a mother. Everything was fine and calm until the time of the next Mothers Day came.

This time the friends from the group who had children decided not to invite OP and Leila, simply because they were not always so interested in discussing various childrens issues. The OP took it calmly and with understanding, but Leila was immediately offended.

The OP tried to explain that even though she is a dog mom, raising a child is still not comparable to keeping a dog. After all, she adopted the puppy when he was already 11 weeks old, specialists help with training and grooming, and in general, the cat-loving OP and Leila are not quite the same kind of moms.

But Leila just turned around and left, and none of her friends heard from her again. Only one of them, who worked with her, heard the woman making some comments about how she was intentionally left out and her friends dont take her seriously because she doesnt have a crotch goblin. In general, the OP began to doubt whether she was right or wrong and whether she was talking appropriately with her friend.

However, the commenters quickly tried to dispel all the OPs doubts, confirming most of the arguments that she cited in a conversation with Leila. For example, one of the commenters wrote that she could easily leave a two-year-old dog at home, while no one could ever leave a two-year-old child.

Being childfree is fantastic, but dont relate yourself to Mothers Day just because dogs arent kids, another commenter stated. And actually, anyone who unironically uses the phrase crotch goblin to describe children is automatically TA that was another opinion. And some of the commenters advised Leila just to celebrate Pet Parent Day, which, by the way, falls on the last Sunday of April.

Perhaps Leila will calm down and make peace with her friends soon, and even start to celebrate the holiday that she was advised to. In the meantime, we are definitely waiting for your comments about this story, and even more for your own exciting stories.

Comic Artist Captures the Daily Pressures of What It’s Like To Be a Woman Today – My Modern Met

Posted: at 4:10 am

Artist Lainey Molnar continues to capture what it is like to be a modern woman in her ongoing series of comics. Initially sparked by the first COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, her creative practice has blossomed online, with hundreds of thousands of people from around the world following her highly popular Instagram account. The success of her digital comics can be attributed to their honesty, understanding, and underlying messages of empowerment to all women.

When Molnar started drawing her illustrations, she was 31 years old and single and facing many of the expectations that are placed on women, including marriage and motherhood. I'm now 33, still single, still not considering having children, she says, I don't have a degree, I can't drive a car, I've been self-employed jumping around gigs my entire life, I have 57 tattoos, I live out of suitcases, and spontaneously buy one-way plane tickets on a regular basis. I refuse to feel like these life decisions are any worse than anyone else's. While these personal comics began as a way for Molnar to explore her own life, she has expanded the characters and topics to illustrate a larger dialogue of different women's experiences.

We all think we don't belong, we are behind, we're getting things wrong, or we are flawed and it keeps our growth and potential at bay, Molnar continues. I fight for the acceptance of everyone's unapologetic selvesas long as it doesn't hurt anyone, why should we hide or change who we are? One of her latest comics features four panels with four unique female characters. One had an abortion, another gave the baby up, the third is a conflicted mom, and the last is childfree. Molnar adds a text bubble at the bottom of each situation to highlight how women's choices are frequently criticized, regardless of what that choice may be. Life decisions are not one dimensional, especially ones as huge as creating a new life, she adds in her Instagram post.

Scroll down for a taste of Molnars comics, and then be sure to follow her massively popularInstagramto see what shes drawing next.

Vicki Larson: Its time to get creative about what affordable housing means – Marin Independent Journal

Posted: at 4:10 am

Theres a house in the neighborhood thats for sale, a three-bedroom, three-bath house that, by todays standards, isnt all that big under 2,000-square feet. Its listed at $1.8 million but everyone knows it will sell for more than $2 million.

A family raised their four children there and now that they are long grown and flown, a three-bedroom, three-bath house is a lot for a one person, a widow for the past decade, and a lot to keep up. So, shes moved.

Of course, the people flocking to the open houses are young families or young families-to-be, who one day will be empty-nesters and perhaps widowed, and stuck with a three-bedroom, three-bath house that will be too much for them.

Which reminds me of a comment someone made under a column of mine from a few weeks ago, on how being a woman in Marin is harder now than ever before.

This is the situation that most boomers find themselves in now. They painted themselves into this corner by protesting any new housing in this county over the pasty forty years Where I live in Marin there are all of these big 3-4-5 bedroom homes that have 1-2 old people living in them just clinging to their prop 13 lottery tickets, its such a waste of space. Hopefully things get better once this generation passes on, but I doubt it.

Well, given that the young families or young families-to-be snapping up multi-million-dollar homes in Marin and who one day will also be empty-nesters and perhaps widowed, and stuck with a three-bedroom, three-bath house that will be too much for them, I dont have much hope for things getting better.

Im a boomer and I have always been for building new housing in the county. But and this is a big but all kinds of housing. More three-, four- and five-bedroom homes in excess of 2,000-square feet? No, we dont need more of those houses.

What we need is creative housing made for how people live today.

Fewer people are getting married, fewer people are having children, and of those having children, many, nearly 43%, are one-child families, a number thats expected to continue rising. In 2030, there will be more people over the age of 65 than under for the first time in history. More than 50% of American adults are single in 1950, it was a mere 22%. There are about 11 million single-parent families, most overwhelmingly headed by single moms, who earn less than men do.

You bet seniors, singles and single parents dont need to have huge homes. But where is housing for them? Where are cozy houses of about 1,000-square feet or less, perfect for one or two people? Not condominiums paying for homeowner association fees on top of a mortgage makes condos, usually the most affordable housing to buy in Marin, unaffordable to many.

A handful of one-bedroom, one-bath houses of under 700-square feet often converted garages or ADUs exist in Marin. Some are in my neighborhood. Even they are valued at astronomical amounts, close to $1 million.

A friend and I were talking about this recently. Both single women, wed happily move to a one- or two-bedroom house if we could. But there just arent that many around here that actually are affordable, and so were stuck.

Theres been a lot of pushback on SB 9 and 10, the new laws that allow multiple units to be built on the same footprint as a single-family home. Everyone is so worried about how that will change the character of a neighborhood that they cant even see how it could actually enhance a neighborhood.

Imagine a couple buys a duplex and rents out the second unit, lessening their financial load. Then they become parents and the now-family of four occupies both floors as a single-family home because the way the duplex is built makes it easy for them to do so. Then their kids grow up, and theyre empty nesters. Now they can easily and cheaply convert their single-family home back into a duplex, with one unit back as a rental, or for a caregiver, or for a family member, perhaps their adult children, offering closeness but privacy in a multigeneration home.

It could just as easily be two single moms buying a duplex together, creating a chosen family situation where they help each other with childcare. It could just as easily be a single person who could benefit from creating rental income.

At least one Philadelphia company, Module, is thinking along those lines, inspired by the innovative Chilean architect Alejandro Aravenas design for incremental, affordable housing.

The housing we build ignores the fact that many people are single, either by choice or by chance, or who are childfree couples, or are at an age where they dont need or want a huge house. There is scant housing in Marin and elsewhere for people like them like me.

Building affordable housing? Yes please. But all kinds of affordable housing. Its time.

RI casino owner Bally’s sues Lincoln and Tiverton over property values – The Providence Journal

Posted: at 4:09 am

Ballys, owner of the states two casinos, has sued the towns of Lincoln and Tiverton, claiming their property taxes should be reduced due to the impact of COVID-19.

In separate lawsuits filed in Superior Court, Ballys claims that government mandates significantly limited business operations at both Tiverton Casino & Hotel and at Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort, which were closed for a period of time and then re-opened with reduced hours.

Despite the casinos limited operations in 2020 and the beginning of 2021, Ballys said the towns failed to apply an economic obsolescence factor to the December 2020 assessment. Economic obsolescence is a loss in value due to causes beyond the physical asset.

More: Twin River employees accuse casino of failing to pay adequate overtime in class-action suit

Ballys says the Lincoln tax assessor assessed Twin River at $108.4 million in December 2020 the same value as the previous year. Ballys appealed the assessment in October and the town later denied it.

Ballys contends that the assessments of both casinos constitute an illegal tax on the two properties.

In a nearly identical suit against Tiverton, Ballys claims that the assessment of its casino and hotel was assessed at $60.4 million in December 2020. Again, Ballys appealed the assessment and again, the appeal was denied.

In both suits, the company says the December 2020 assessments were greater than the fair market value of the properties.

The Journal has reached out to David Robert, Tivertons tax assessor, and Lincolns assessor, Brenda Keeble.

More: Elsewhere, casinos are having their best year ever. So why are they struggling in RI?

More: As COVID fades, Rhode Island casinos ease restrictions on smoking

Meanwhile, dozens of Ballys Twin River employees, wearing red T-shirts that said Ballys United, gathered in front of Providence City Hall on Tuesday to demand that the company restore pre-pandemic staff levels and hours at the casino. The workers were joined by other Ballys employees, Local 26 leaders (the hospitality and food service workers union) and Providence City Council members Jo-Ann Ryan and Carmen Castillo.

With their union contract expiring on July 1, workers called for the full reopening of the casino and significant wage increases.

Employees claim the casino business has remained profitable despite the pandemic. In 2021, they said, gambling revenues at Twin River rose to nearly 81% of pre-pandemic levels.

But, they said, before the pandemic there were three times as many full-time workers as there are now. Among the 260 workers currently on the schedule, workers said only 64 are employed full time. Because the casino is understaffed, employees said they are exhausted after their shifts, according to a statement from Local 26.

Linda Borg covers education for the Journal.

268 kids were left alone at Bethlehems casino over 4 years. A new plan seeks to change that. – lehighvalleylive.com

Posted: at 4:09 am

On its face its a shocking figure: 147 incidents over four years where 268 children were left unattended at Bethlehems casino.

The incidents from 2018 to 2021 ranged from a mere minute to nine hours, and are part of an increasingly concerning trend at the casino, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board said Wednesday.

Now, owners Wind Creek Hospitality have developed a mitigation plan to not only deter parents or guardians from leaving kids alone, but detecting incidents as well.

The PGCB did not detail each incident, but said the kids ages ranged from 2 months to 17 years old, and they were found in various locations, from parked cars and secure hotel rooms to the food court or the outlet mall, the PGCB said.

The casino was owned by the Sands before it was sold in 2019 to Wind Creek.

More recently, from 2021 to April 2022, there were 43 times children were found alone on the casino property. Of those:

Wind Creeks plan, presented Wednesday, includes more signage in and around the casino, increased training for staff, and mobile patrols in parking areas and foot patrols inside by outside security.

For the past several months, probably better part of a year, we have analyzed a lot of incident reports, poured through a lot of data, to really focus on what we believe are the most problematic areas, the things we could tackle to reduce this problem as much as possible, Michael Magazzu, Wind Creeks executive director of compliance and risk assessment, said.

Most of the recent incidents involved the food court, and Magazzu said new signs on every table there have cut down on children being left alone.

But one PGCB member took issue with the signs used for people leaving the parking garage, saying that minors must be accompanied by an adult.

The sign should say, Parents, dont leave your kids in the car! I dont know why youre dancing around the issue, Sean Logan said. Youre here because people are leaving kids in cars unattended. And theyre leaving kids in their hotel rooms unattended.

Glenn Granitz, the former Allentown police chief who is now head of security at Wind Creek, told the board of improvements made to security patrols in the outlet mall and food court area, including a security officer stationed in the food court.

The casino has also increased its use of Bethlehem police officers patrolling parking lots, both on foot and in cars.

Granitz spoke about the large size of the campus and how ArtsQuest hosts a number of large events that attract kids and families to the neighboring SteelStacks. Recently, when it rained during prom season, the casino becomes a place for pictures, he said.

Clearly a lot of people of all ages coming and going, he said.

This is the second mitigation plan for unattended children at casinos in Pennsylvania, the PCGB said.

The first was developed by Valley Forge Casino Resort in Montgomery County in November 2021. Valley Forges plan included a new infrared camera system to detect children and adults in vehicles with tinted windows.

Wind Creek does not use infrared cameras, but Granitz said its something being considered.

Since the Board publicly addressed this serious situation, we have seen the casinos step up their efforts to detect children left unattended on their property while adults responsible for their care gamble, said Gaming Control Board Executive Director Kevin OToole. All casinos are taking this matter seriously and we expect more specific plans, such as those implemented at Valley Forge and Wind Creek casinos, to come before us in the near future.

The board did not say how many of the 147 incidents resulted in an arrest and/or charges.

Lehighvalleylive.com has reported on some of the incidents. In 2019, a New Jersey woman was accused of leaving three kids under the age of 10 alone in a car for two hours in 2019. The next year, an 8-year-old boy and his 2-year-old sister were found wandering the fifth floor of the parking garage in January.

The figures released Wednesday were news to the Northampton County District Attorneys Office, which was not contacted by Wind Creek or the board about the issue.

The casino sits in Northampton County, and arrests in incidents involving children would be referred by law enforcement to the district attorneys child abuse and sexual assault unit, headed by Chief Deputy District Attorney Tatum Wilson.

We would welcome the the opportunity to talk to the casino or the PGCB, Wilson said.

Wilson said the number of cases prosecuted by the unit during the four-year timeframe doesnt match the figures provided by the PGCB.

Every incident would not result in a parent or guardian being arrested and/or charged. Charging a parent would depend on a number of factors, including the age of the child, how long they were left alone, where they were found, and if it involved a vehicle, Wilson said

Deep Space Travel: What’s on the Menu for Astronauts May Well Come from Cultivated Insect Cells – Tufts Now

Posted: at 4:08 am

Insect cells, said David Kaplan, the Stern Family Professor of Engineering, check all the NASA boxes. They use fewer specialized resources to grow and are highly adaptable to thrive in the environment of a space station.

In space, whats needed are low-cost, simple ingredients you can carry in high density to produce lots of food over long periods of time, he said. The system were proposing is highly efficient. And nutritionally, insects are just as good, if not better, than animal-derived meats, and yet can be produced at much lower cost.

That efficiency makes growing insect cells a promising way to feed people on Earth in a future dominated by climate change, he added. Modern agriculture is carbon-intense, and food scarcity is projected to increase for a growing global population.

Were looking at Earth the same way we look at the space station, but with more problems and in a larger volume, he said. It's all about scale.

That all-encompassing potential for insect-cell cultivating is encapsulated in the name of the Tufts proposal: Deep Space Entomoculture. Natalie Rubio, EG21, coined the word entomoculture for her Ph.D. thesis (entomo is the Greek root for insects). She is the first graduate student in the Kaplan Lab to focus specifically on the possibility of growing insect cells for food production. She did this by applying tissue engineering techniques to cells from insects. The techniques had previously been developed for mammal cells for regenerative medicine, which promotes the repair or replacement of injured cells, tissues, or organs.

Rubio, whose studies were supported by a fellowship from the nonprofit New Harvest, first heard about the concept of cultured meat as a college student committed to animal welfare. I just instantly fell in love with the idea, she said. I knew that was what I was going to do with the rest of my life.

Insect cells may be a better source of deep space protein than cultivated mammal cells, explained Sophie Letcher, EG25, a Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering whos working on the project with continued New Harvest funding. Cells from a cow or a pig need to be heated to the temperatures of the animals in which they would naturally grow, while insect cells can be grown at room temperature. Most mammalian cells grown for cultured meat purposes need to be attached to a dish or substrate, which would typically require gravity, but insect cells can more easily grow suspended in a liquid culture media (made up of amino acids, sugar, salts, and other ingredients). And they've actually already been grown in simulated microgravity, said Letcher. Thats a big point of interest.
