Atos Talks European HPC Openness and a Hybrid Future of AI, Machine Learning and Quantum Supercomputing – insideHPC
Posted: May 15, 2022 at 9:58 pm
This exclusive Q&A interview was conducted by Nages Sieslack of the ISC 2022 conference organization, with Eric Eppe, head of portfolio and solutions, HPC & Quantum at France-based HPC systems vendor Atos.
Nages Sieslack: How are the needs of the European HPC market changing with regard to traditional supercomputing and things like deep learning/AI and data-centric computing?
Eric Eppe: Supercomputers are the soft power for all nationals. They are essential for numerical simulations, accelerating technological, industrial, and scientific innovations. We see a transition from traditional compute-centric simulation toward data-centric, resulting in a more heterogeneous workload. We believe the future of HPC is hybrid. This means combining traditional simulation workflows using CPU & GPU (even TPU, FPGA, IPU, why not QPU) with advanced techniques to accelerate part of these workflows thanks to machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), or even quantum computing (QC). The virtue of deep learning/AI is not only limited to the GPU accelerator on the hardware side but also serves as the foundation of smart software within HPC cluster management and workload optimization. In this regard, deep learning/AI-empowered software optimizes workloads while increasing the systems global efficiency.
Sieslack: How are those changes affecting the types of systems and services you are offering?
Eppe: Atos leads the hybrid computing trend with its existing HPC portfolio and the newly revealed BullSequana XH3000. It is the next-generation hybrid computing platform, the foundation for any scale simulation up to the exascale. It has unparalleled flexibility, industry-leading density, and embedded security. For Atos, Exascale doesnt mean Exaflopic performance only. We believe that Increasing global system and application efficiency is the only way to decrease system cost and stay within a reasonable power consumption at that scale. Thus, we have incorporated ML/AI mechanisms in our HPC Software suites to optimize simulation and keep control of energy consumption for unprecedented efficiency. We have also witnessed the need for high-performance AI simulations and launched the ThinkAI solution last year. With ThinkAI, we eliminate all the roadblocks in designing, developing, and installing high-performance AI systems, putting AI simulations at the fingertips of all businesses and academics. Furthermore, we leverage our HPC-as-a-Service portfolio, enabling any customer to run their simulations anywhere they want.
Sieslack: Geographically, where do see your biggest opportunities for growth in the HPC market, both within Europe and globally?
Eppe: Compared with China, the U.S., and Japan, which are relatively closed HPC economies (they build their own HPCs for their use), Europe is the most dynamic and open HPC market. Europe has significantly invested in the EuroHPC JU, Atos empowers 5 of the 7 EuroHPC centers. Europe continues to invest in supercomputing, including HPC and Quantum computing, e.g.the upcoming Exascale tenders, as an extension of the EuroHPC JU. Atos designs, develops, and builds our HPCs in Angers, France, and is number 1 in HPC in Europe. We also have our HPC, AI & QC R&D centers in France. We actively participate in European initiatives to develop the European microprocessor with EPI and the GAIA-X initiative. Atos is the undisputed leader in the European HPC market, instrumental to its technological and economic sovereignty.
Sieslack: What trends are you seeing for your HPC on-demand service via your Nimbix cloud offering with regards to use cases and the types of customers?
Eric Eppe of Atos
Eppe: As industry analysts have predicted, cloud computing will continue to grow at double-digit rates through 2025*. Our on-demand service through Nimbix is seeing this growth, with customers across the globe consuming computer power at record numbers. We have witnessed on-demand usage increase specifically within automotive manufacturing, Lifesciences, and academic research organizations. We are pleased to offer these industries the most comprehensive hybrid HPC cloud portfolio and are excited to be advancing this space with new offerings and technology. In fact, in the second half of the year, we will deploy the first public cloud offering in partnership with a top hyperscaler to provide Genomic analytics of sequencing data, from specialized cluster resources delivered by Atos Nimbix.
Sieslack: What is Atos doing now on the quantum computing front? Which companies and partners are currently using your Quantum Learning Machine simulator?
Eppe: Quantum Computing will re-invent how we simulate, co-existing with HPC. In Dec 2021, Atos confirmed its role as a global leader in quantum hybridization technologies at its 8th Quantum Advisory Board. For Atos, we work mainly on five strategic directions to accelerate quantum computing:
On top of these five strategic paths, we have launched Qscore, a universal metric to benchmark quantum applications performance. Together with clients worldwide, such as Argonne Labs, BMW, CESGA, SENAI CIMATEC, and Total, we are accelerating the arrival of the quantum era.

Colocation consolidation: Analysts look at what’s driving the feeding frenzy – The Register
Posted: at 9:58 pm
Analysis Colocation facilities aren't just a place to drop a couple of servers anymore. Many are quickly becoming full-fledged infrastructure-as-a-service providers as they embrace new consumption-based models and place a stronger emphasis on networking and edge connectivity.
But supporting the growing menagerie of value-added services takes a substantial footprint and an even larger customer base, a dynamic that's driven a wave of consolidation throughout the industry, analysts from Forrester Research and Gartner told The Register.
"You can only provide those value-added services if you're big enough," Forrester research director Glenn O'Donnell said.
The past few months have seen this trend play out en masse, with the latest being private equity firm DigitalBridge Investment Management's take over of datacenter provider Switch Inc in a deal valued at $11 billion.
Switch operates datacenters specializing in high-performance infrastructure. The company completed its fifth Prime datacenter campus in Texas last year, but this is only the latest colo acquisition in recent memory.
"There have been a pile of smaller colocation providers that have been coming together, either being acquired by the big boys, or they've been merging," O'Donnell said.
There's been a flurry of colocation mergers and acquisitions over the past few months. Here's just a sampling: NorthC acquired Netrics, LightEdge bought NFinit, EdgeConnex made off with GTN, Unitas Global snapped up INAP, VPLS nabbed a Carrier-1 datacenter in Texas, and Digital 9 absorbed Finnish colo Ficolo and Volta's London datacenters.
So what's driving this ramp in M&A activity? You might think it's the cloud, and while there's certainly some truth to that, O'Donnell says it's not the full story.
"I always like to remind people that just because cloud is so big and growing does not mean the datacenter is dead," he said, adding that to some extent cloud has actually driven people to colos more than it has hurt them.
"I won't give cloud all of the credit, but cloud certainly proved that this is a viable way of doing things," O'Donnell added.
What the cloud has managed to do is force colocation providers to innovate around new consumption models and platform services, while simultaneously expanding their reach closer to the edge.
The major cloud providers operate a relatively small number of extremely large datacenters located in key metros around the world. By contrast, colocation providers like Equinix and Digital Realty operate hundreds of datacenters around the globe.
This reach is not only one of the big attractions of colocation providers, Gartner analyst Matthew Brisse said, but it also turns out to be one of the biggest drivers of M&A activity.
"Size matters in this business because customers, especially multinational customers, want datacenters in a lot of different places," O'Donnell said.
According to Brisse, when enterprises start looking into colocation facilities, their main concern is getting workloads spun up in the right place. "The main reason that people go to colos, is location, location, location," he said.
And this demand has only accelerated as colocation providers look to offer services closer to the edge.
"We see the colocation providers starting to build out their edge offering as opposed to a simple hoteling experience for your infrastructure," Brisse said.
These aren't necessarily large datacenter facilities in the traditional sense, either, he explained. These can be as small as a half-sized shipping container positioned at the base of a cell tower.
Smaller regional colocation providers also serve an important role because they tend to build in places the larger players overlook, Brisse explained.
"A lot of companies don't have the luxury of sitting right next to an Equinix facility," he said. "There's lots of opportunities out there for colocation market in totality."
And as colocation providers inch closer to the edge, Brisse argues networking and automation are only becoming more important.
One of the most potent value adds offered by major colocation providers today is networking.
"As you look at the colocation services, the networking services have become a pretty big deal to differentiate them from just being a simple chunk of real estate to plop your servers," O'Donnell said.
And here again the larger players have the advantage. "Networking connectivity requires a big provider with lots of locations connected by their own fiber," he added.
These backbone networks allow workloads running in a datacenter on one side of the country to communicate with another without ever going out over the open internet.
But it's not just networking between colocation datacenters that's important. Many of these colocation facilities are located directly adjacent to the major cloud and software-as-a-service providers.
"So AWS, for example, or Microsoft Azure might be in the same building as you and connecting to it is just a matter of connecting to a different cage in that same building," O'Donnell said. "Smaller players can't do that, but the bigger guys can."
However, as customers increasingly turn to colocation providers for edge compute and networking, complexity rears its ugly head, Brisse argues.
In the future, "we're going to have lots of datacenters everywhere; we're going to have lots of data distributed in the right location; we're going to have edge facilities everywhere bringing data close to the edge," he said. "It is not going to be possible for humans to monitor all of that activity."
So, in addition to growing their footprint and network services, Brisse believes colos will also need to invest in AI operations capabilities to manage this complexity.
Both Brisse and O'Donnell expect the colocation market to continue to consolidate as macroeconomic forces put a pressure on smaller players.
"If the economic troubles we're seeing are persistent, I think we will see an acceleration of this kind of [M&A] activity," O'Donnell said.
It's important to remember that while colos may look like tech companies on the inside, on the books, they're really real estate investment trusts, he said, adding that in the current economic environment, colos are a comparatively safe bet in an otherwise dismal commercial real estate market.
"Colo is a hot market and getting hotter," O'Donnell said.

Croupiers plan to walk off the job at Montreal Casino for the second time in two days – Toronto Star
Posted: at 9:57 pm
MONTREAL - Croupiers at the Montreal Casino say they will walk off the job once again today following a surprise four-hour strike on Saturday.

Inflation Could Take Toll On Casinos, Says Hard Rock CEO Allen – Casino.Org News
Posted: at 9:57 pm
Posted on: May 15, 2022, 04:22h.
Last updated on: May 15, 2022, 05:31h.
The April reading of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 8.3%, representing a meager decline from the 8.5% increase in March, but enough to keep consumer prices at the highest levels since 1982.
At least one casino executive says signs are mounting that inflation is weighing on the gaming industry. In a recent interview with CNBC, Hard Rock International CEO Jim Allen notes inflation is affecting operators in a variety of ways.
Specific to Hard Rock, which is one of the largest tribal gaming entities in the US, Allen points out building materials prices have just exploded. Thats relevant to the operators Las Vegas Strip ambitions.
Last December, Florida-based Hard Rock said its paying $1.075 billion for the operating rights to the Mirage. But the operators spend isnt ending there. Its planning to gut the venues famous volcano and redesign the property in the shape of the ubiquitous Hard Rock guitar. Amid high inflation, supply chain issues, and labor shortages, Mirage enhancements could cost more than expected, though Allen didnt say as much in the interview.
Regional casinos are among the contributors to the industrys rebound from the coronavirus pandemic. But that strength could be tested, as gas prices remain high across the country, with no signs of near-term relief.
We look at gasoline anywhere from $5 to $6 a gallon, Allen told CNCB. Theres no doubt that in most regional gaming markets that customer is a day-tripper, utilizing gasoline to get to the facility. And when thats up 30% to 40%, thats going to be problematic.
The Hard Rock chief executives comments on gas prices affecting regional casinos carry weight, because the companys portfolio of US casinos is largely regional properties. That includes venues in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, and Ohio.
Additionally, tribal operators in Oklahoma, of which Hard Rock is one, could be affected by consumers dialing back on driving simply in the name of visiting a casino. Oklahoma casinos are heavily dependent on visitors from neighboring Texas, and the same applies to commercial regional casinos in Louisiana.
Likewise, casinos in the Reno/Lake Tahoe market could be crimped by California gas prices the highest in the lower 48 states.
Allen said Las Vegas is proving resilient against the backdrop of higher inflation, and that Hard Rocks Florida casinos are sturdy, For now.
With gaming industry earnings season drawing to a close, its accurate to say theres been plenty of inflation talk on conference calls. One of the obvious takeaways is that Strip-heavy operators, namely Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ:CZR) and MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM), are noting soaring consumer prices arent yet sapping demand for travel to Las Vegas.
However, some operators are seeing signs of reduced spending among cost-conscious patrons, including in the Las Vegas locals demographic.
There is no doubt that inflation with food and groceries and even gasoline has an impact on the lowest segments in the database for sure, said Red Rock Resorts (NASDAQ:RRR) CEO Frank Fertitta on the company first-quarter earnings conference call earlier this month.

Why Casino Stocks Soared This Week to Beat Out the Stock Market – The Motley Fool
Posted: at 9:57 pm
What happened
Shares of both Las Vegas Sands (LVS 15.06%) and Wynn Resorts (WYNN 13.17%)finished the week in the black, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, while Caesars Entertainment (CZR 10.36%) erased most of a large deficit after Shanghai officials announced they will end weeks of strict lockdowns and attempt to reopen again in a few days.
Sands ended the week up 1.1% from where it closed last Friday after having been down 12% going into the last day of trading, while Wynn was essentially flat after having been down by a like percentage.
Although Caesars still ended the week off 8%, it had been down as much as 19% during the week, so it made up almost as much ground as its peers.

China has dealt harshly with its citizens to contain new outbreaks of COVID-19, with the Shanghai population of 25 million people absolutely forbidden from leaving their homes, oftentimes not even allowing for deliveries, leading to massive food shortages. Beijing has been subject to similar forced lockdowns.
It's having a rippling effect across numerous industries as global trade and supply chains have also been impacted by the lockdowns. According to Reuters, restaurants, malls, and entertainment and tourist venues have been closed, bus, subway, and taxi service has been suspended, and residents have been forced to remain in their buildings with almost daily COVID-19 testing required.
Since the lockdowns began at the end of March, the casino stocks are still down even after Friday's rally, with Las Vegas Sands off 11%, Wynn down 17%, and Caesars down 28%.
The reason casinos have fell as hard as they have is because mainland China is the largest source of tourism for Macao, the only place in China where it's legal to gamble. Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong are all major cities that contribute to Macao casino revenue. The lockdowns kept visitors from coming to the casinos.
While easing lockdowns is a positive step, casino stocks will unlikely see any benefit initially, and maybe for some time to come as gambling is not about to be the first thing people who have been short of food and necessities will think about.

We the People: Federalist Papers help courts understand the Constitution – The Spokesman Review
Posted: at 9:56 pm
Each week, The Spokesman-Review examines one question from the Naturalization Test immigrants must pass to become United States citizens.
Todays question: Why were the Federalist Papers important?
Although published in 1788 for the sole purpose of encouraging the ratification of the Constitution, the Federalist Papers almost immediately took on much larger role in American history.
Though historians debate whether the Federalist Papers managed to sway public opinion at the time, the series of essays continue to shape American politics today by serving as a blueprint for how to interpret the intent of the Constitution and the will of its authors.
They were almost an educational document for supporters more than a way to convince individuals to vote a certain way, said Michael Meyerson, a law professor at the University of Baltimore and author of Libertys Blueprint.
Meyerson suspects the Constitution likely would have been ratified without the Federalist Papers. But without them, there would be a less clear understanding of the role of the Constitution in the American system of government, he said.
There are limits to the Federalist Papers, and its not an end-all, be-all, Meyerson said. Its simply a tool, an important tool, and just because you recognize its limits doesnt mean you have to ignore its strengths.
We the People: After some linguistic detective work, it became more clear that Alexander Hamilton was the most prolific Federalist Papers authorEach week, The Spokesman-Review examines one question from the Naturalization Test immigrants must pass to become United States citizens. | Read more
Hoping to shed light on the various provisions of the Constitution, the Supreme Court often looks to the Federalist Papers for guidance on issues related to the separation of powers, which some experts say is a practice more relevant in recent times.
The very concept of separation of powers comes from the Federalist Papers and was not itself in the Constitution, said Anthony A. Peacock, head of the political science department at Utah State University. But the irony is that (the Federalist Papers) really werent a subject of widespread scholarly study until the turn of the 20th century.
By creating a collection of explanatory essays, the authors, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, also paved the way for an extensive exchange of ideas over the Constitution.
When the Federalist Papers first began to circulate through New York newspapers, several anti-federalist literatures sprouted up in response.
Following the publics spirited protest, Hamilton began to use newspapers as the vehicle for political debate with critics of the Constitution, Peacock said.
This is sort of the first time in American history that you have a significant constitutional debate being conducted in the printed word, Peacock said.
Hamilton, widely known as the main contributor of the Federalist Papers, has enjoyed new popularity thanks to popular musical Hamilton, which is in the midst of a run in Spokane. The show at the First Interstate Center for the Arts will close on May 22.
My family members have all seen it and my wife and youngest son said they really enjoyed it, Meyerson said. I should at some point take the time to watch it, too.

A US Policy Of ‘Bleeding Russia’ In Ukraine Is Reckless In The Extreme – The Federalist
Posted: at 9:56 pm
The New York Times on Wednesdaypublished an op-ed by Tom Stevensonarguing what some of us have been arguing for a while now: the Biden administration is openly and recklessly pursuing a policy of escalation in Ukrainethat represents a new and very dangerous phase in the war.
Stevenson, a journalist who reported from Ukraine in the opening weeks of the war, argues that initially the United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies responded to Russias invasion of Ukraine rather straightforwardly, with supplies of arms to the Ukrainians and economic sanctions on Russia. But things have changed over the past month.
Now, instead of simply helping Ukraine stave off invasion and conquest, U.S. policy seems to have shifted into something else entirely: the permanent weakening of Russia at any cost. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said so explicitly after a clandestine visit to Ukraine with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken last month. After her own recent visit to Kyiv, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi characterized the war asa global struggle for democracy.
To back up these outlandish claims, the Biden administration has now proposeda $40 billion military aid package to Ukraine, quadruple what the United States has thus far given Ukraine since the outbreak of the war in late February. On top of that, it appears the U.S. military may be providingreal-time battlefield targeting intelligenceto the Ukrainians, arguably making the United States an active belligerent in the conflict.
All of this amounts to a major policy shift on the part of the United States, writes Stevenson: Whereas once the primary Western objective was to defend against the invasion, it has become the permanent strategic attrition of Russia. This shift, he adds, has coincided with the abandonment of diplomatic efforts.
So what possible strategic gain does bleeding Russia in Ukraine hold for the United States? The risks of pursuing such a policy are immense, including the possibility of nuclear war between the worlds top two nuclear powers. If the Biden administration has some overarching goal in mind, it has not bothered to tell the American people. Instead, we are trundling along the road to war as if every decision we make is simply a reaction to Russian aggression.
But in fact, the war itself has shifted dramatically since late February, and conditions now are arguably more favorable to a cease-fire and a negotiated political settlement than they were even a month ago. Having failed in its initial push on Kyiv in the northern part of the country amid fierce resistance from the Ukrainians, Russia has shifted its strategy, limiting its forces to the south and east of Ukraine in hopes of consolidating control of a much more limited territory.
But instead of recognizing this for the concession that it is and seizing the chance to persuade both sides to stop fighting and make a deal, the United States has responded by publicly calling for the weakening of Russia and committing an enormous amount of taxpayer dollars to arming Ukraine in what might otherwise be turning into a much more limited conflict in the eastern part of that country.
A cynic might conclude that the Biden administration doesnt really want the fighting to stop and will gladly keep funding a proxy war with Russia, even as it denies that it is doing so. A cynic might also argue that U.S. policy in Ukraine now has very little to do with Ukraine and everything to do with Moscow, possibly even encompassing the dangerous fantasy of regime change in the Kremlin.
That is certainly the view of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who claimed this week that we can win this war on behalf of Ukraine. (Recall that Graham called for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin back in March.)
Indeed, Biden and the Democrats have largely been joined in their strategic folly by most Republicans. Only 57 GOP members of the House voted against the $40 billion aid package to Ukraine this week.
As things stand now, its not unreasonable to suppose a bipartisan consensus is emerging in Washington to expand the war and get the United States directly involved in it under the pretext that the battle for Donbas is, as Pelosiludicrously claimed, the frontier of freedom. To quote Stevenson, This is not just declamatory extravagance. It is reckless. The risks hardly need to be stated.

Karine Jean-Pierre Is A ‘Stolen Election’ Conspiracy Theorist – The Federalist

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki is hopping over to MSNBC where shell continue to run interference for President Joe Biden, so Karine Jean-Pierre will soon be filling her role as the executive spokeswoman. Although Jean-Pierre officially holds the title of principal deputy press secretary at the moment, a look through her old tweets shows that she is an election-denying, misinformation-peddling, conspiracy theorist.
After Donald Trump won the 2016 election, despite the best efforts of the Russia collusion-peddling corporate media, Jean-Pierre claimed the election was stolen.
Stolen emails, stolen drone, stolen election ..welcome to the world of #unpresidented Trump, Jean-Pierre tweeted.
She later strung together Hillary Clinton talking points to refer to him as illegitimate, writing, Trump always finds a way to take it to the lowest of lows. Not only is he petulant dotard but also a deplorable illegitimate president.
It wasnt just general anti-Trump bitterness, however. Jean-Pierre has a habit of undermining election legitimacy. After Stacey Abrams lost the Georgia gubernatorial election in 2018 and refused to concede to the legitimately elected winner, Brian Kemp, Jean-Pierre came to the defense of a delusional Abrams, writing that the race was stolen.
As recently as April 2020, well into Kemps tenure as governor, the incoming White House press secretary was still spreading conspiracy theories about the election.
Reminder: Brian Kemp stole the gubernatorial election from Georgians and Stacey Abrams, Jean-Pierre wrote.
These are just a sampling of tweets, so maybe they dont matter except Democrats have assured us that they do.
After Biden prevailed in the 2020 election, Democrats said any claims of it being stolen or even questions about election integrity amounted to misinformation, conspiracy theories, a threat to our democracy, and even an insurrection. Posts about it have been spiked as misinformation by Facebook and Twitter, with YouTube taking down videos that talk about election integrity issues.
This is despite the fact that the election was rife with problems and malfeasance, including election laws being ignored or changed last minute, plus mass mail-in balloting and trafficking that lacked any legitimate oversight.
This is to say nothing of Big Tech running cover for the Biden family by censoring bombshell stories about their corruption, which voters admit might have changed their minds in casting a vote for the now-president. Or of media propagandists refusing to cover real news while spinning up fake scandals about Trump and neglecting to cover his administrations massive victories. Or of tech oligarchs like Mark Zuckerberg dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into the election to staff government elections offices with Democrat operatives and running get-out-the-vote efforts in blue hubs.
The people who raise alarm bells about these glaring issues have spent the last year and a half being censored and smeared, with some of them being investigated by the FBI and branded as insurrectionists for being present in Washington, D.C., and daring to peacefully voice their concerns outside the Capitol.
Yet within Bidens own inner circle is a conspiracy theorist who spreads misinformation about our elections and undermines our political process of self-government and she just got a promotion.
