For safety of Gaganyaan crew, ISRO will simulate failure with abort missions – The Indian Express
Posted: at 2:06 am
ISRO will conduct two unmanned abort missions, one in September and the other in December, to simulate failure and ensure crew safety as part of its roadmap for Gaganyaan, the countrys first manned flight to space, in 2024, ISRO chairman S Somanath told The Indian Express.
Our first priority is human safety. So, we are now focusing on abort missions that is simulating failures and bringing the crew back safely under those circumstances. The first Test Vehicle for this purpose is ready and we will launch it in September this year. The human capsule will be sent up 15 kilometres, we will simulate an abort and then the capsule will be safely brought down by parachutes into the sea, Somanath, who is also Secretary, Department of Space, said.
The second Test Vehicle will be launched in December this year, sent to a greater height and then brought back after a similar simulation is carried out.
We are intentionally delaying the manned mission as this is a very dangerous mission. If this is not successful, then the entire project may even have to be closed down. So, we have to be extremely accurate and absolutely sure. An unsuccessful mission will have a very bad impact on the system as well as on ISRO, Somnath said.
The ISRO chief pointed out that while the main purpose of the Gaganyaan mission is to demonstrate Indias capability, it is also the first step toward an Indian Space Station in the future.
More and more human activity is likely to shift to space over the coming decades, he said. For instance, 3D printing of organs is emerging as one of the biggest sectors that will shift to space in the future, as zero-gravity is the perfect condition for growing organs, he said.
Last week, ISRO carried out the launch of the HS 200 rocket booster in Sriharikota as a part of the first stage of Gaganyan. The HS200 booster, which was 20 m long with a 3.2 m diameter, was loaded with 203 tonnes of solid propellant and tested for a 135-second duration.
The mission, which will carry three Indians into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), was pushed back due to the pandemic it was initially to be launched this year, coinciding with 75 years of Indias independence.
There has been a large impact due to the Covid pandemic the production of various systems gets affected and the restart takes time. We have lost one-and-a-half years because of Covid. Europe was severely affected and thereby the production and supply chains were disrupted, and we needed to acquire many parts from these countries, including electronics and computer chips. There was also a restriction on expenditure due to Covid, Somanath said.
According to ISRO, the Rs 9,023-crore Gaganyaan programme will lay the foundation for a sustained Indian human space exploration programme in the long run.

Apollo 11 photos of Armstrong and Aldrin auctioned as NASA announces Moon return date – Express
Posted: at 2:06 am
The Moon Shots: Space photography 19501999 auction included 327 photographs covering the earliest rocket launches through to the first manned lunar missions. The fortnight-long auction was held by Christie's online, with bidding having closed earlier this afternoon. The lots, the auction house said, documented a wide-ranging view of the Golden Age of space exploration.
They added: Spanning the 1950s, with the launch of Atlas, to the late 1990s, with images capturing the beauty of Saturns rings, the collection captures an exciting panorama of one of the most important scientific stories in history.
Among the most evocative photographs are shots of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin setting foot on the Moon for the first time, and the first untethered space flight.
In fact, the sale was led by two images of Mr Aldrin on the lunar surface with one, dated July 1624, 1969, showing the pioneering astronaut posing by the US flag with the Eagle Lunar Module in the background. It was valued at 20,00030,000.
The second was a picture in which the Eagle and Neil Armstrong, who was behind the camera, can be seen reflected in Mr Aldrins mirrored visor. This sold for 9,450.
Christies added: The photographs are arguably some of the most recognisable photographs from space exploration, capturing Aldrin posed against the backdrop of a vast lunar landscape.
Other notable inclusions in the auction included two pictures of NASA engineer Ed White performing the first-ever US spacewalk in the June of 1965, one of which was auctioned off for 1,386.
Meanwhile, a shot of the first spacecraft rendezvous conducted at a whopping 17,000 miles per hour sold for 1,008, and a sunset photograph of the first Saturn V rocket on its launch pad sold for 504.
The auction also includes various breath-taking shots of the Earth and Moon as seen from space including the iconic first human-taken photograph of an Earthrise over the lunar surface in the December of 1986, which went for a whopping 15,120.
The full selection of photographs being sold in the Moon Shots: Space photography 19501999 auction can be viewed on Christies website.

The space-themed auction is coming to a close just as NASA officials have revealed the prospective launch dates for the Artemis I mission.
A major step in efforts to return humanity to the lunar surface, the uncrewed mission will see the first integrated flight test of NASAs Orion spacecraft and the long-awaited Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.
Launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the mission will engage in several orbits of the Moon, including the first-ever distant retrograde orbit which will reach some 43,730 miles out from the lunar surface.
The mission will last anywhere between 26 and 42 days, depending on which launch window is chosen with NASA having identified 158 different opportunities between July 26 this year and June 30 in the next.

The choice of launch windows depends on various factors including the orbital mechanics that will be in play at each given point in time.
A NASA spokesperson explained: The resulting trajectory for a given day must ensure Orion is not in darkness for more than 90 minutes at a time.
This, they added, is so that the solar array wings can receive and convert sunlight to electricity and the spacecraft can maintain an optimal temperature range.
Mission planners eliminate potential launch dates that would send Orion into extended eclipses during the flight.
On Tuesday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson told a US House subcommittee hearing that they were aiming, all things being well, to launch Artemis I in August.
As NASAs Kathryn Hambleton told Ars Technica: The range of dates is not meant to convey anything about the probability of launching in 2022 or 2023.
All launch dates more than about two months out are preliminary. It is standard for the team to have a preliminary outlook several months ahead.
Well set a more specific target after we complete wet dress rehearsal testing."
This trial which will see the SLS fully fuelled and brought to within 10 seconds of engine ignition is currently anticipated to take place in earlymid-June.

Euthanasia’s a Possibility For Those Too Poor to Live In Canada – Splice Today
Posted: at 2:05 am
A 31-year-old Toronto woman going by the pseudonym "Denise" is confined to a wheelchair and awaitingfinal approval for a medically-assisted suicide request after she was unable to find an affordable apartment that won't exacerbate her chronic illnesses. With a medical condition that makes her susceptible to anaphylactic shock if exposed to cigarette smoke, laundry chemicals, and air fresheners, finding safe living quarters on her limited budget has been so difficult that she prefers death to persevering. According to Denise, the reason she wants help in ending her life is her "abject poverty."
I hesitate to say this woman is "lucky" that the Canadian government will allow a physician to end her short life, when the alternative is for the government to find her a humble place to live at, at the very least, a subsistence level. How hard can that be for the nation whose citizens are always touting their government's concern for the common good by comparing it to their Southern neighbor's laissez-faire, uncaring individualism?
Denise said she and her supporters have called 10 different agencies in Toronto to locate suitable housing, but none of them were able to even find temporary housing or emergency funds for her. On the other hand, she found that applying to be euthanized was a much easier process. The price of life in Canada can now be calculated with some simple math. Just add up this woman's modest monthly financial requirements and subtract the $1200 in government assistance she's now receiving, and you have the number.
Denises plan was made possible under Canada's MAID (medical assistance in dying) law, passed in 2016. Previously, that legislation covered those whose death was already inevitable, but the law was expanded last year to include those in other categories than the soon-to-be dead. Denise doesn't really want to die, but she sees no financial path to avoid life on the streets in a wheelchair.
Denise is in a different category than another person CTV reported onCheryl Romaire, suffers from chronic inflammation in her spinal cord, and now feels "constant burning, electrical, icy pain" in her back. Romaire's also eligible for euthanasia, but that's because her suffering's unbearable. A few extra bucks a month isn't going to alleviate that. The ethics of promoting assisted suicide are thorny, but the morality of healthy people insisting that those in Romaire's situation must bear their pain for a lifetime must be scrutinized as well.
Canada's Maclean's has reportedon a woman who said, "An increase [in income support] is the only thing that could save my life. I have no other reason to want to apply for assisted suicide, other than I simply cannot afford to keep on living." Canada's getting into tricky moral territory when it facilitates the deaths of people who only want to die because they can't afford to stay alive. An official Canadian government document published in 2020 estimated the cost savings resulting from the original 2016 MAID law and the amendment to that legislationBill C-7. Given the cold-blooded nature of this analysis, it's not too dystopian to imagine that the government might succumb to its baser instincts and find a way to justify ridding itself of a costly group that's no longer able to contribute to society. As MAID applicants become younger, which is inevitable, the potential government savings over their longer lifetimes will provide an added economic incentive to help them check out. The government would find a way to explain that such a culling of the herd was based on the most humanitarian of motivations.
In March of next year, Canada will become one of the few nations in the world to permit euthanasia for those whose sole underlying condition is mental illness. Doctors will soon be able to kill patients suffering from depression, which is depressing.
What's going to happen is that those who cant afford needed therapy, medications, or crucial medical care will seek the MAID option. In the event of another pandemic, the scenario of the government participating in opt-in euthanasia is frightening. My calculation of the dollar figure Canada places on a human life is approximately $1000 per month. Denise currently receives $1200 in government assistance, and I believe that she could live on $2200. Life's becoming cheap in Canada.
Denise ought to make her name public. Through charitable organizations and crowd-funding, she could certainly make up the difference. That might embarrass the Canadian government enough so that it will rethink its facilitation of suicides of people too poor to live.
It probably won't.

Final Australian state allows euthanasia and assisted suicide, rejecting religious exemptions – Catholic World Report
Posted: at 2:05 am
Denver Newsroom, May 19, 2022 / 16:58 pm (CNA).
New South Wales has become the sixth and final Australian state to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide. Its legislation forces health care and elder care organizations with religious objections to allow the practice on their premises.
If a civilization is to be judged by how it treats its weakest members, the New South Wales parliament has failed miserably, and has set a dark and dangerous path for all posterity, determining a new and disturbing definition of what it means to be human. Archbishop Anthony Fisher of Sydney said May 19.
Despite our disappointment, our fight for life does not end with this vote, he added. He then invoked a phrase of Pope Francis: We must redouble our efforts to care for those who are victims of the throwaway culture and instead rebuild a culture of life and love in this state.
The Upper House of the New South Wales Parliament voted to approve the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021 by a vote of 23 to 15 on Thursday. It will take effect in about 18 months, according to The Catholic Weekly, a publication of the Archdiocese of Sydney.
The bill allows euthanasia or assisted suicide to Australian citizens who are at least 18 years old. They must have a terminal illness and be expected to die within six months. Those expected to die in twelve months may seek euthanasia or assisted suicide if they have a neurodegenerative condition and experience unbearable suffering. Their application for euthanasia or assisted suicide must be assessed by two medical practitioners and they must be found to be making their decision voluntarily, without duress, the U.K. newspaper The Guardian reports.
The disturbing nature of this legislation is compounded by the way the debate over amendments was conducted, said Archbishop Fisher. All amendments put forward by those who would seek to make this deadly regime even a little bit safer were rejected.
That no meaningful amendments were accepted speaks to a winner takes all approach by the proponents of this bill and reveals an ugliness that has invaded our politics. This does not bode well for the protection of our most vulnerable citizens.
Objecting religious health care providers had sought the ability to ban euthanasia and assisted suicide from their premises, but the relevant amendments were rejected.
Catholic health and aged care providers in New South Wales have served their communities with compassion and professionalism for more than a century and will continue to offer high-quality hospital and end of life care despite this poorly designed law, Brigid Meney, director of strategy and mission at Catholic Health Australia, said May 19.
However Catholic health and aged care providers are disappointed and saddened by the passing of a law that violates their ethic of care, she continued.
This law will force organizations that do not agree with assisted suicide to allow doctors onto their premises to prescribe and even administer restricted drugs with the intention of terminating a residents life without even informing the facility, Meney continued. These laws ignore the rights of staff and residents who may choose to work and live in a particular residential facility because of their opposition to assisted suicide.
Catholic Health Care Australia, the Anglican health care provider Anglicare, and the Christian aged care provider HammondCare had all strongly campaigned for their faith-based elder care facilities to be exempted from the law, citing freedom of conscience. Conscience protections, however, were defeated in the Upper House by a vote of 23-13.
Greg Donnelly, a Labor Member of the Legislative Council, was among other pro-life lawmakers who had sought to limit the New South Wales legislation through amendments, including conscience protections.
He said it was utterly repugnant and draconian to force facilities with moral objections to assisted suicide or euthanasia to allow the practices. Such provisions are essentially an authoritarian imposition on what are, in our civil society, associations of people coming together for a purpose.
Other defeated amendments sought to clarify whether a person seeking euthanasia or assisted suicide has decision-making capacity or is significantly impacted by a mental health impairment. Failed amendments aimed to provide palliative care or to bar healthcare workers or third parties from initiating discussions about euthanasia or assisted suicide.
Alex Greenwich, an independent MP who had introduced the bill, praised its passage and said compassion has won. He called for euthanasia and assisted suicide advocates to focus on the federal parliament to pass laws that would allow Australias territories to legislate for euthanasia and assisted suicide, Australias ABC News reports.
Australia has six states and ten territories, though the lawmaking abilities of the latter are dependent upon the federal parliament.
Liberal Prime Minister Scott Morrison rejected any move to allow euthanasia and assisted suicide legalization in the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, by far the two most populated Australian territories, though the Labor party has pledged to make debate on the issue a priority if it wins control of the federal government in the elections set for Saturday.
Bishop Anthony Randazzo of Broken Bay lamented the legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide in New South Wales, calling it a completely unacceptable solution to the problem of suffering.
A genuinely human society is not how we decide to eliminate those who suffer, but how we care for them, he said. We should be considering and caring for the rights of all citizens to be well, to have the care they need, and not lost to the margins.
Now more than ever we must ensure members of our family, friends, those who are alone, the vulnerable in our community know and understand that they are loved, that we will be with them in their journey, and that they are not a burden, said Randazzo.
Archbishop Fisher thanked members of parliament who opposed the bill, often in the face of disdain and disparagement from their parliamentary colleagues, from pro-euthanasia lobby groups and from the media.
When the New South Wales bill was introduced in late 2021, Fisher vocally criticized it and asked Catholics to speak out. He warned of the prevalence of elder abuse and the alarming rates of suicide among the vulnerable.
As someone who has experienced the pain and humiliation of serious illness, I need you to speak up for life, he had said. He recounted his severe case of Guillain-Barr syndrome, which paralyzed him from the neck down and put him in terrible pain and total dependency on others for five months.
Catholic bishops in Australia have repeatedly written in support of palliative care as an alternative to assisted suicide and euthanasia.
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faiths September 2020 letter Samaritanus bonus reaffirmed the Churchs perennial teaching on the sinfulness of euthanasia and assisted suicide. The congregation recalled the obligation of Catholics to accompany the sick and dying through prayer, physical presence, and the sacraments.
In February 2021, an Australian university found that the country has less than half the number of palliative care physicians needed to care for terminally-ill patients.

Rabbi: Jewish Law Provides Room For Debate To Protect Life In The Womb And The Mothers Health – CBS Miami
Posted: at 2:04 am
MIAMI (CBSMiami) The Jewish discussion on abortion does not center around pro-life or pro-choice. Instead, Judaism focuses on the mothers right to protect herself from harm.
Within the faith, theres disagreement on what constitutes a threat to the mothers life during pregnancy.
Until the 40th day after conception, they define the fetus as mere water, said Rabbi Rachel Greengrass of Temple Beth Am.
She references the Talmud, a primary text for Jewish Law.
The mitzvah of be fruitful and multiple only falls on the man, said Greengrass.
Because you cant be required to do something that puts your life in danger.
In my conversation with Rabbi Lyle Rothman at the University of Miami Hillel, he explained how Jewish faith leaders approach religious law text.
The wonderful thing about the debate in the Talmud, is that there is debate in the Talmud, said Rothman.
Its very easy to say this is a black and white issue. Were pro-choice or pro-life.Were not.
Even on the most conservative spectrum, Judaism allows protection for the mother, especially in the first 40 days of pregnancy.
Only in those severe, very serious mitigating circumstances, said Orthodox Rabbi Avrohom Brashevitzky, who leads the Chabad of Doral.
He shares how Torah provides wisdom in this discussion.
Very much for the sanctity of life, said Rabbi B.
Rabbi B outlines God says the most sacred thing is to do everything to sustain life.
But, the Torah calls for a mother to protect herself.
According to Torah law, its no different than someone holding a gun to you, where you not only have the right to defend yourself but an obligation to defend yourself, Rabbi B added.
Short of clear, imminent danger, what constitutes a threat to the mother varies.
Another debate in Jewish law is what to do if the fetus has severe life-threatening abnormalities.
Then there would be a consideration, perhaps, if its prior to the 40 days, said Rabbi B.
Rabbi Greengrass shares a couples story at the Temple, choosing to end a pregnancy 12 weeks in.
Embryo was carrying Tay-Sachs, mentioned Greengrass.
If the child was born would have a short and painful existence and die at a very young age.
Theres also rabbinic support even if the womans life is not at risk, including mental health.
Its health care, which means both physical and mental, said Greengrass.
The living has precedence over the potential.
When it comes to Jewish text, theres one universal truth.
To save a life is to the save the entire world, said Rothman.
Rabbi B shared this with me.
He said Jewish law does not give the green light for abortions but instead provides room for debate to protect life in the womb and the mothers health.

Celebrate with our community at the Jewish Federation Annual Meeting – Jewish Community Voice
Posted: at 2:04 am
Jewish tradition teaches us that being part of a kehillaha communityrequires thoughtful responsibilities and actions.
All Jews are responsible for one another (Babylonian Talmud, Shevuot 39a).
The wicked son [at the Passover Seder is so designated because he] excludes himself from the community (Mekhilta commenting on Exodus 13:8).
If I am not for myself, who is for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? (Pirkei Avot 1:14).
To live Jewishly includes being with other members of the Jewish community. Helping to make a minyan so that mourners kaddish and other prayers may be recited; celebrating life cycle ceremonies; observing holidays; and studying Jewish texts and traditions require us to be with each other. One of the positives of the horrible impact of the pandemic is how Jewish organizations learned to quickly onboard new (at least to many of us) technology which allowed us to be together virtually. We adapted to be able to show up for those who needed us for a shiva minyan, a Pesah Seder, for Shabbat services and in so many other ways.
We need each other to live Jewishly. We have a responsibility to take care of each other, to celebrate together, to mourn together and to enjoy life together.
Community building happens when we all opt in to make decisions for the wellbeing not just of ourselves or our loved ones, but for all members of the community. Our Jewish Federation is honored to work with all of the Jewish organizations throughout Atlantic and Cape May Counties to help build and support our Jewish community. Our communitys incredibly successful LIFE & LEGACY efforts are a great example of how we have all worked together to ensure the financial viability of our Jewish organizations for generations to come. We are proud of the fact that our communitys efforts were recognized as one of the top performing communities of the Harold Grinspoon Foundations (HGF) national LIFE & LEGACY program. The Legacy program provides Jewish Federation with the resources and tools to bridge gaps among community institutions, strengthen our culture of philanthropy, and make after-lifetime giving normative behavior.
We have much to be proud of, and the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation invite you to come celebrate with us at our Annual Meeting and LIFE & LEGACY Year 4 Celebration on Wednesday, June 15, 6 p.m., at the Milton & Betty Katz JCC. Join us as we celebrate the great work the Jewish Federation is doing at home and around the world; to honor our 2022 award recipients; Year 4 of LIFE & LEGACY and our communitys 267 Legacy Society donors; and to honor Rebecca Taylor for 17 years of service to the Jewish Federation.
The Jewish Federation is pleased to honor individuals and organizations being presented with the following awards at our Annual Meeting:
Harry Cassman Award Eric Share, immediate past president of the Milton & Betty Katz JCC and Board member of the Jewish Federation and Seashore Gardens.
Jack I. Fox Leadership AwardMary Sluzenski, finance director, Jewish Federation.

Alice Walker and the Jews, again – JNS.org – JNS.org

(May 17, 2022 / Jewish Journal) When the San Diego Community College District announced that Alice Walker would be the keynote speaker for the new chancellors installation, immediate protests followed. Various Jewish organizations criticized the invitation and The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on the controversy. At least two opinion pieces (here and here) came out against Walkers appearance.
Walker, best known for her 1982 novel, The Color Purple, made into a movie in 1985 and a musical in 2005 (which garnered 11 Tony Awards), has become an icon of American culture. Why this is the case is something of a mystery, since none of her subsequent novels achieved anything like the success of The Color Purple. Unlike, say, Toni Morrison, Walker cannot point to a substantial body of work to justify her reputation. Nonetheless, she remains a popular figure on the lecture circuit and a selection of her journals has just been published to considerable acclaim.
But Walker is also an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist. She follows the deranged ideas of David Icke, who believes, as Vox puts it, that the world is run by a secret cabal of alien lizard people, many of whom are Jewish. Walker herself authored a poem that is riddled with anti-Semitic libels. In the screed, Walker encourages her reader to study the Talmud, but not by actual Talmud study. Instead, she says:
I recommend starting with YouTube. Simply follow the trail of TheTalmud as its poison belatedly winds its wayInto our collective consciousness.
What does one find on YouTube? A litany of anti-Semitic tropes taken straight from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion:
Subscribe to The JNS Daily Syndicateby email and never missour top stories
Is Jesus boiling eternally in hot excrement,For his crime of throwing the bankersOut of the Temple? For loving, standing with,And defendingThe poor? Was his mother, Mary,A whore?
Are Goyim (us) meant to be slaves of Jews, and not onlyThat, but to enjoy it?Are three-year-old (and a day) girls eligible for marriage and intercourse? Are young boys fair game for rape?Must even the best of the Goyim (us, again) be killed?Pause a moment and think what this could meanOr already has meantIn our own lifetime.
Now, one would think that at a time when the slightest hint of racism is enough to sink a career, Walkers unapologetic adherence to anti-Semitism would disqualify her from the role of keynote speaker on a college campus. But the response to the wave of protest to her invitation shows that David Baddiel was right when he titled his book Jews Dont Count. Progressives, says Baddiel, believe that anti-Semitism is not real racism, or that it is a lesser form. So when anti-Semitism occurs, its either ignored or discounted as something minor. That is a perfect description of the response to Walkers anti-Semitism.
After The San Diego Union-Tribune published an article that questioned Walkers invitation, the Districts PR person, Jack Beresford, responded:
The San Diego Community College District is pleased to welcome Alice Walker as keynote speaker at the May 31 investiture celebration. Walker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and her participation is consistent with the Districts support of the free exchange of ideas and opinions. This does not mean the District agrees with every statement made by her now or in the past. Walker is a source of inspiration for many in the community. This includes chancellor Carlos Cortez, who says Walker played a key role in his decision to focus his academic studies on African-American feminist political history.
It is inconceivable that someone who spouted Walker-style slurs about blacks, Hispanics, Asians, LGBTQ persons or any other minoritized group would be treated with such respect. It is inconceivable that the repetition of some of the worst racist anti-black or anti-Hispanic tropes would be treated as part of the free exchange of ideas and opinions or described as the subject of legitimate disagreement. This is to treat anti-Semitism as if it were a dispute over the causes of inflation or whether students and teachers should continue to wear masks in the classroom.
Imagine the response if someone floated the idea of an invitation to Don Black, the white supremacist who created Stormfront.org, because he pioneered the use of the web to spread ideas? After all, we dont have to agree with every statement made by [him] now or in the past. What about an invitation to David Duke, the former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, because he was also a successful politician and, whether we like it or not, a source of inspiration for many in the community?
I am glad that Walker has had a positive influence on Cortez and that she has been an inspiration for him. But Jewish faculty at several San Diego community colleges see Walker as a serious threat. The refusal to take their concerns seriously is alarming in the extreme. As one writes in a private email, Walkers invitation clearly exemplifies the Jews dont count mentality. This district has sent a clear message that Jews better watch their backs because anti-Semitism is clearly tolerated, and in this case invited, to campus.
At a time when the ADL reports that anti-Semitic incidents in the United States are at an all-time high when attacks on synagogues and JCCs have increased 61%, when a white supremacist posted a virulent anti-black and anti-Semitic manifesto before he went on a murder spree in Buffalo, N.Y., it is sickening that Alice Walker will be accorded the honor of a keynote address.
Jew-hatred needs to named, confronted and condemned, not brushed aside as unimportant or something upon which reasonable people may disagree.

The posuk describes the pursuit of Torah study as being, Yikara hi mipninim More precious than pearls. Homiletically, the Gemara interprets this posuk to mean, Mkohein godol hanichnas lifnei ulifnim, that the study of Torah is more precious than the High Priest who enters the Holy of Holies. This is an extraordinary statement. We must understand that the Kodesh Kodoshim, the Holy of Holies, is the holiest place on earth. It is entered only on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, and only by the Kohein Gadol, who is arguably the holiest person on earth. And yet, the Gemara categorically tells us that when one sits down to study Torah, it is a greater activity than the Kohein Gadol entering the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement.
We should not be surprised, however, when hearing such grandiose descriptions about Torah study for the Gemara in Megillah also teaches us, Gedolah Talmud Torah yoseir meihatzolos nefoshos Greater is Torah study even more than saving a life. Now, dont misunderstand this Talmudic dictum. If you are sitting and learning Gemara and you see someone drowning and you say to yourself, I cant be bothered to save that person Its bitul Torah, its taking time away from Torah study, you are a chosid shoteh, a pious fool, and youre guilty of felonious behavior. What it does mean is that in raw merit, time spent in learning Torah has more Eternal value than saving a life.
This is why Mordechai was demoted in the pecking order of the leadership of the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah from the rank of four to the rank of five when he got involved in the political intrigue to save Klal Yisrael during the days of Purim. For, although he saved the Jewish people, he would have had even more merit if he had been able to learn instead. Think how incredible that is. You have two people who spent their Sunday night from 8 to 9 p.m. One administered the Heimlich maneuver and saved a person from choking and another person attended the Daf Yomi. In the scales of merit, it is the latter person who comes out on top.
That should give us a whole new perspective on how to prioritize our time. Or, as the Chofetz Chaim, ztl, zya, put it, if you saw somebody having a massive heart attack and you didnt react on time to call Hatzalah and he died before your very eyes, you would rue that day for the rest of your life. So thats the way you should feel, and more, when you have a whole Sunday ahead of you without anything pressing to do and you dont spend any of that precious time on the study of Torah. If you would rue the inability to save the life, then your inability to spend time learning Torah, which is even more precious than saving a life, should certainly distress you to no end.
As we count sefira, and declare nightly our longing and our appreciation of the national treasure of Torah which has been given only to us, may we concretize our sefira declaration by making more use of our daily time for the greatest of all occupations, and the very purpose of the creation of the world, which is Torah study. In that merit, may Hashem bless us all with long life, good health, and all Torah blessings.
