Amber Heard’s former pal and sister paint terrifying portrait of Johnny Depp as Trump weighs in on trial – Toronto Sun

'What a lovely couple!' former president says weighing in on ongoing trial

Publishing date:

Amber Heards former best friend and her sister were among the witnesses who testified Wednesday as they sought to help prove her claims that her former husband Johnny Depp was abusive during their five-year relationship.

Raquel Pennington, a onetime close friend of Heards, said she was frightened for the Aquaman stars physical safety as she recounted details from the aftermath of some of the couples alleged fights.

I was scared for Amber, she tearfully said in a pre-recorded deposition. I was sad for her and I was also sad for Johnny because he is my friend too, and I really wanted them to be able to get it together.

Pennington testified that she never saw Depp hit Heard, but that she saw evidence of abuse following incidents of alleged physical assault.

There were many times that I saw injuries on her, Pennington said, adding that she had seen very, very long, deep cuts on Heards arm following the pairs alleged fight while Depp was shooting Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in Australia in 2015.

During that trip, Heard has claimed Depp beat her and sexually assaulted her with a bottle, while he maintains she abused him and severed his fingertip.

After another fight in December 2015, Pennington said she observed a bloody patch with hair missing on Heards scalp. Pennington also declared that Heard had sustained a black eye, a swollen nose and a busted lip.

Depp, 58, is suing Heard for $50 million, saying she smeared him in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post when she claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse.

Heard, 36, is counter-suing for $100 million, claiming that Depp defamed her by calling her a liar.

Later on, Heards sister Whitney Henriquez continued to try and paint a portrait of an unhinged, drug-addicted Depp when she took the stand in Fairfax County, Va. We all thought Johnny would get better, she said, adding that she had observed bruising and weird marks on her (sisters) arms.

During one fight, the actor was screaming like an animal and Henriquez woke the next morning to find the place was destroyed.

After a getaway to Hicksville Trailer Palace in Joshua Tree, Calif., Henriquez described the scene after an argument in an Airstream trailer. I went to my sisters trailer and it looked like a bomb went off in there it looked like someone had ransacked it, she said.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

If he was using or if he was drinking, there was almost always a fight, she asserted.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

In 2013, when her beau arranged an overseas flight to surprise Heard for her birthday in England, Henriquez described how a drunken Depp picked up a steak knife and hurled it at his assistant and called his soon-to-be wife a slimy whore.

They fought and got back together, Henriquez said of their tumultuous relationship adding that they seemed really in love when they first got together in 2011.

Echoing Heards portrayal of Depp as a jealous partner, Henriquez said Depp would ramble about my sister having affairs and questioned why she wanted to work. He began to try and control how she would look at various red carpets as well. Eventually they had the same stylist, and he was essentially controlling what she wore to events, Henriquez said.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Elsewhere, Henriquez alleged Depp hit her, which prompted Heard to lash out at the Edward Scissorhands star, screaming, Dont hit my fing sister.

But Henriquez said that despite Heards assertion that she was the victim of domestic violence her sister just wants to move on. Her reputation is all she has, she doesnt have piles of money and private islands, Henriquez said.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

Elizabeth Marz, a friend of Heards, took to the stand late Wednesday and told jurors via video that she was personally scared of Depp following a purported row that took place between the couple in May 2016.

The one interaction I had with him was frightening to me.

When he took the stand last month, Depp was forced to admit his past drug use, but he alleged that Heard abused him and severed the tip of his finger.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

She has a need for violence. It erupts out of nowhere, Depp said.

With the defamation trial still ongoing, former U.S. President Donald Trump took a swipe at the proceedings through his Truth Social platform.

Has anybody been watching the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial? What a lovely couple! First of all, Johnny sued her for writing an article in a tiny outlet, that practically nobody read, because he didnt want to get bad publicity. How did that work out? She counter-sued for $100 million, Trump said mocking Heards op-ed in The Washington Post. The charges are many & salacious, the nicest of which is that she threw a bottle at him and it took off his finger She must have a Sandy Koufax type arm. Will they get back together and live happily in PEACE?

The trial is expected to continue until the end of the month.

The stunning Scots Airbnb with private outdoor pool, hot tub and sea views – Daily Record

Posted: at 2:24 am

With the summer, and hopefully, the warmer weather approaching, it's time to start planning the ultimate trip.

With thousands heading to the Highlands and islands, it could get a little crowded, while travelling abroad might still feel a little unsafe.

Thankfully, you don't have to go far from the central belt to find the perfect place to stay.

Lying just an hour's drive from Glasgow, in the picturesque village of Wemyss Bay (pronounced weems) recently named one of the most romantic in the country you'll find an incredible Manor House.

Not only does this unique stay offer incredible sea views, it even comes with its own private outdoor swimming pool.

Northcliff Manor boasts space for eight guests, a hot tub, sweeping sea views out to Bute - and most importantly, a sizeable outdoor pool transporting guests away from gloomy Scotland to the warmer climes of the continent.

But it's not just about the outside, the period property is filled with character on the inside too.

The striking property has been a huge hit with guests, garnering rave reviews and a stellar 4.88 rating.

Perhaps understandably, given the inconsistencies of Scottish weather, the pool is only in use on seasonal basis, from June to September, with all those dates for 2022 fully booked up.

However, according to the calendar, if you wanted to plan in advance, you could land yourself a poolside spot for next year.

When we checked on Airbnb, we found a week's stay in this fabulous Weymss Bay property costs 500 a night.

To see the listing in full and for more photos of this Scottish west coast beauty, click here.

Don't miss the top culture and heritage stories from around Scotland. Sign up to our twice weekly Scotland Now newsletter here.

SNP calls for Boris Johnson to explain why private jet was allowed to leave UK for Russia despite flight ban – Sky News

Posted: at 2:24 am

The prime minister has been asked to explain why a private jet was allowed to leave the UK for Russia after a flight ban had been imposed.

Boris Johnson was quizzed during Prime Minister's Questions about a private chartered flight from Inverness Airport to Moscow, which took place a day after the Russian flight ban came into force.

SNP MP Richard Thomson said in the Commons: "Air traffic control transcripts published this week have revealed that despite being informed of the intended flight, no attempt was made by the UK government, or its agencies, to prevent the plane from taking off.

"Will the prime minister commit to informing the house at the earliest opportunity: who was travelling on that flight; why, despite being informed in advance of the flight, was no attempt made by the UK government to keep the plane on the ground; and what will the prime minister personally do to try and prevent any similar breaches of sanctions from happening in the future?"

The Learjet 60, operated by the company Panaviatic, flew from Inverness on 26 February to Moscow's Vnukovo Airport.

Exactly who was on board the flight remains a mystery.

Questions to the prime minister follow a letter from SNP MPs to the UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps demanding an explanation into who authorised the flight, despite a Notice of Air Missions (NOTAM) aimed at preventing flights of its kind.

Drew Hendry, the SNP MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, highlighted reports in the Press and Journal newspaper of a memo confirming UK government approval of the flight and the apparent conflict with the transport secretary accusing Inverness Airport of "failing to comply" with the NOTAM regulations.

Mr Hendry said: "The UK transport secretary must first apologise for scapegoating Inverness Airport and set the record straight that it was his department that authorised the flight.

"He must then answer the pressing questions over why this flight was allowed to take off and who and what was on it.

"These are important questions following a raft of reports showing how much Russian money is swilling about Tory coffers."

Highland and Islands Airports Ltd, the operator of Inverness Airport, said it had acted in accordance with the regulations.

It said: "We carried out the instructions received from the authorities at the time, to the letter. Our actions were correct and appropriate, and this has been borne out by an examination of the record."

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: "It is entirely incorrect to claim the transport secretary authorised this specific flight. Inverness Airport did not contact the Department for Transport before the flight left.

"A NOTAM was issued on 25 February by the NATS on behalf of the UK government informing all aviation stakeholders. It is the responsibility of all operators, including Inverness airport, to ensure they are monitoring NOTAMs and complying with the restrictions."

Meet the Human Battery, a New Source of "Green" Energy – Verve Times

Posted: at 2:23 am

This story is about something really creepy and disgusting. It is about routinely using people as batteries to power devices.

What comes to my mind is the prospect of an ironic ending to the famous depiction of evolution, the one where the neanderthal gradually turns into a straight-walking modern man, etc. It looks like if our self-appointed global managers with eugenicist tendencies get their way, the next phase of human evolution could be a battery!

A biological battery powering the digitized system of domination! Not a metaphorical battery where the masters get to syphon off peoples life energy and turn it into profits but a literal battery!

The concept of Human Battery puts the transhumanist slogan about the need to merge with machines or be left behind in the evolution of the human species in a sinister context. (Not that the slogan needed any additional context to sound like eugenics. Seriously who are you, Mr. Transhumanist, to consider yourself in charge of human evolution? Who appointed you?) But here is the context: What if being left behind means being turned into batteries?

Come, come, useless eater, stop being so useless! Put your body to work, useless eater, antivaxxer, grandma killer, planet killer! We have many useful machines to feed in our Fourth Industrial Revolution! Come, come, useless eater!

Now, an important philosophical distinction: My indignation is over the scope and the intention of their proposal. If this were merely about a neat little invention, a useful little emergency device that allows you to charge your phone from your body when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere, and your phone has just died fine, that can be reasonable!

If it were simply about the existence of an emergency device that we could use once in a blue moon, on our terms, when needed, it wouldnt be a problem. But in the realistic world we are living in, this is going the way of the Matrix! Human batteries are a very neat foray into the twisted world of human capital and impact investment, not to mention good ol energy harvesting! To quote my 2020 article about the Great Reset for Dummies:

Lets talk about human capital. In the new world, human capital is not just a metaphor for HR or labor. Microsoft, for example, has a patent for a method of transforming human behavior into cryptocurrency, which is done through an unspecified device coupled with a server that registers body activity and mines crypto.

Since under the New Normal, digital and crypto are supposed to become mainstream, this looks suspiciously like a tool that can be used both to tightly control the behavior of the poor who may depend on this for income and to literally mine the bodies of otherwise useless welfare dependents / UBI recipients for energy.

Furthermore, this patent could potentially be used to create a new financial instrument because, if mined for energy, these people become assets that could possibly be bunched together into virtual portfolios and virtually traded. See how neat?

Now, we are talking proper serfdom! And yes, this sounds very sci-fi but lets not forget how some billionaire visionaries think not like normal people, or else the workers at Amazon warehouses wouldnt be wearing diapers to skip bathroom breaks. Also lets not forget that today, there is trading of very theoretical items as well as betting on weather.

I mean, we shouldnt be surprised by the intention to abuse us, this is how our civilization has been functioning for a long time. But it doesnt make our pain today any less!

In their clever and prophetic 2015 article, the World Economic Forum repackages what sounds a bit like feudalism and makes it sound like a fun activity for the peasants. (Its easy to be prophetic when you hold the policy makers by the balls! Oops, I said the quiet part out loud, sorry.)

Via tricky language, the WEF narrative transforms our basic human existence and the things we do every day as happy, yokeless people, for our joy and on our own volition in other words as useless eaters into potentially useful energy-generating activities, that corporations, the bureaucrats, and the rich investors can exploit.

They subtly reframe the normal things that we do for ourselves in the manner of none of your Davos business as human energy powered activities, an economic area that they can then parasitically tap into (first, with their gentle pinkie, and then with their entire army of bulldozers). Heres from the horses mouth:

Human power used to be all the rage. 150 years ago [roughly around the time when slavery and serfdom were abolished in both of my homelands, America and Russia?], products that relied on human energy such as the bicycle, pedal-powered lathe or sewing machine could be found in most households [a great exaggeration about the availability of bicycles, but fine]. But as electro-mechanical motors developed, reliance on human-powered products gradually diminished.

Today, human power is not appropriately recognised for its potential as an alternative solution to our growing energy needs. Indeed, as we search for more renewable energy sources, is it possible to abandon using traditional electricity for certain tasks and return to human power? [yay, feudalism!]

The way that more and more products are becoming digital and even internet-connected makes this a challenge. But humans emit energy that can easily be harnessed from our everyday behaviour.

And here is a sweet incentive: Human-powered products also have the potential to encourage us to become more physically active Using human-powered products as a countermeasure to our increasingly sedentary lifestyles could create a credible new perspective towards exercise as an alternative energy source.

In some respects, human-power can be seen as the cleanest renewable energy source available, with great potential for helping people stay healthy and have fun. [Awwww, how about introducing a Ministry of Fun? A human-energy-powered Ministry of Fun? Just a thought.]

The article then talks about a concept, appropriately called, parasitic harvesting: Generating power from peoples normal activities such as walking is known as parasitic harvesting. One example of this in action is a handheld tube-shaped device that clips to your belt and backpack and generates electricity as you move around, using a magnet weight, spring, and inductive coil.

What a great idea! Given how subtle our cellular processes are, and how electromagnetic frequencies are such an important language for our bodies, it makes so much sense to walk around with a magnet and inductive coils on our body, while also bathing in the electromagnetic soup from the 5G towers and digital devices!

Sadly, it sounds like theyve lost their marbles. Either that or, like any literal or metaphorical slave owners, they only care about our well-being to the extent that our well-being impacts their profits.

Oh, and they say, we can power our wearables. Well, do we really need our wearables that badly? At that price? Maybe not? And it could be true that in rare occasions, people may need medical implants or wearables but are our aspiring masters counting on everyone being sick and needing a medical implant or wearable?

Are they planning to make everyone so sick that we will all need mothership-reporting medical wearables to keep us alive? Oh and sorry a grandma killer question what happened to our fun and healthy physical activity during the lockdown?

And here is a neat little video from 2021, accompanied by a touching, inspirational soundtrack:

The article, titled, New wearable device turns the body into a battery explains the invention further:

Researchers at CU Boulder have developed a new, low-cost wearable device that transforms the human body into a biological battery. The device, described today in the journal Science Advances, is stretchy enough that you can wear it like a ring, a bracelet or any other accessory that touches your skin. It also taps into a persons natural heat employing thermoelectric generators to convert the bodys internal temperature into electricity.

According to IEEE Digital Library, not only can wearable devices use vibration energy to charge their own batteries, but they could one day have a big impact on our communities.

Thats the conclusion reached by a group of international researchers experimenting with kinetic energy harvesting. The group comprised of researchers from the University of New South Wales and the University of Queensland sees potential to use the method as a valuable tool for things like urban planning and development by detecting peoples modes of transportation [emphasis mine].

Transportation mode detection [emphasis mine] is important to our communities, says Sara Khalifa, researcher from Data61|CSIRO, Australia.

It allows researchers to consistently and reliably collect information on individuals traveling behavior [emphasis mine] to inform urban design, real-time journey planning, human activity monitoring [emphasis mine], CO2 emissions, targeted advertising and more. In other words, well pay for our own surveillance and monitoring! Now, thats fun!

Speaking of paying, lets please revisit the Microsoft patent: Here is the summary:

Human body activity associated with a task provided to a user may be used in a mining process of a cryptocurrency system. A server may provide a task to a device of a user which is communicatively coupled to the server. A sensor communicatively coupled to or comprised in the device of the user may sense body activity of the user. Body activity data may be generated based on the sensed body activity of the user.

The cryptocurrency system communicatively coupled to the device of the user may verify if the body activity data satisfies one or more conditions set by the cryptocurrency system, and award cryptocurrency to the user whose body activity data is verified.

Heres more detail:

A virtual currency (also known as a digital currency) is a medium of exchange implemented through the Internet generally, not tied to a specific government-backed flat (printed) currency such as the U.S. dollar or the Euro, and typically designed to allow instantaneous transactions and borderless transfer of ownership.

One example of virtual currency is cryptocurrency, wherein cryptography is used to secure transactions and to control the creation of new units

A brain wave or body heat emitted from the user when the user performs the task provided by an information or service provider, such as viewing advertisement or using certain internet services, can be used in the mining process.

Instead of massive computation work required by some conventional cryptocurrency systems, data generated based on the body activity of the user can be a proof-of-work, and therefore, a user can solve the computationally difficult problem unconsciously. Accordingly, certain exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure may reduce computational energy for the mining process as well as make the mining process faster.

By the way, the word mining is very appropriate here. Isnt it the mechanism that turns vibrant land into wasteland? And will our master care when it happens to our bodies?

For living beings, electricity is a very important language that our bodies use for internal and external communications, and for many critical functions. Lots been said and written about it but perhaps The Invisible Rainbow by Arthur Firstenberg is an excellent starting point.

Modern scientists are babies when it comes to understanding the subtleties of our bodies and our interaction with the world. Why do they assume that the energy that our body emits is a waste? How do they know its a waste? How do they know that is serves no purpose? Is there such a thing in nature as waste?

Oh and how long until we are instructed to keep ourselves in shape to be efficient batteries for our feudal masters?

According to the WEF viewpoint, we are not just living our lives. We produce and spend energy. We dont just go about our day and do various things because we want to do them. We move around as power generators, as human machines, on a giant conveyor. We must be efficient.

They, the hungry messengers of the spirit of domination, are annoyed with every moment and every inch of our free and independent existence! And of course they have been annoyed with it for centuries and throughout the centuries, theyve being abusing different groups of people, with the same existential cruelty, trying to put people to use, without any respect for the spirit. Our independent existence is their lost profits! How dare we!

They dont want to leave any room for our unmonetized, unmonitored freedom. These people are mental. They are pathetic, anxious, greedy, sorry, mechanical zombies. At the root of it, they are not even scary, just pathetic (although they are capable of creating great carnage, and thats the scary part about their spiritual illness).

I am not angry, anger is not productive. But I am surely appalled! Their plight is in defiance of how we as human beings are intended to live, in harmony with the spirit, with nature, and with each other. They have really lost their marbles somewhere down the road! They are out of their minds, these messengers of the ghost of domination!

The task that we are looking at is challenging and humbling. I think that they are existentially allowed to temporarily mess with us so that we remember that the system of domination was never right. It was not right a thousand years ago, it was not right five hundred years ago, and it is not right today. Today, we feel it with our own souls and our own flesh really badly and it was never right.

And its time to remember that we are the children of spirit and Earth, just like many who came before us and faced the Machine. I, for one, am disgusted with the psychopaths but I am not afraid because we are love, and where there is love, there are no human batteries and no fear.

This Years Venice Biennale is Full of Surrealism and Stark Reminders – Yahoo News

Posted: at 2:23 am

The 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale de Venezia is making a splash upon its long-awaited return. After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual art exhibition is back on the scene with pieces representing artists and countries from around the world.

Consisting of a total of 200 artists from 58 countries, the Biennale was curated by Cecelia Alemani and is itself entitled The Milk of Dreams. The title draws its inspiration from the title of a book by surrealist artist Leona Carrington, which Alemani describes as being an exploration of a magical world where life is constantly re-envisioned through the prism of imagination.

Upon exploring the exhibitions many poignant offerings, its easy to see why the imaginative curator landed on the theme. An eclectic mix of eye-openers and statement-making pieces, the often surreal and exploratory pieces of the Biennale speak to its global sensibility and penchant for pushing the envelope (and in some cases, dropping jaws with in-your-face, dreamlike artwork).

Below are some of the most standout pieces on display this year, running the gamut from fantastically nightmarish metamorphic mashups to stark depictions of reality that speak to the horrors of war and the power of resilience:

Occupying the entire Danish Pavilion, Isolottos piece is emblematic of this years Biennale and its surrealist namesake. Depicting a human/horse hybrid lying prone in the center of a stark, messy interior, the piece evokes the dramas of a transhuman world afflicted by the same cycles of life and death, hope and despair, that connect us all.

Larger than life and less fantastical than many of its counterparts, German artist Katharina Fritsch opted for size, grandeur, realism, and attention to detail on this piece. But that doesnt make it any less impactful. Fritsch is also a co-recipient of the Biennales Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement this year.

Stunning, silver, and described as a sprawling body of entanglements by its creator, this standout in the Korean pavilion is pseudo-realistic a tangled up knot of fantastic proportions that doesnt rely on animate objects and their relationship to the world, yet somehow evokes a feeling of movement with its twisty form.

Formerly located in NYCs High Line in 2019, U.S. artist Simone Leighs Brick House is a majestic bronze sculpture depicting an imposing figure thats part Black woman, part house, registering as a vessel, a dwelling, a space of comfort, and as a site of sanctuarya Black womans body as a site of multiplicity, says Madeline Weisburg. Leigh has also won a Golden Lion for her monumental and momentous sculpture.

Vogels contribution was a jaw-dropper for sure a perfect example of the German artists experimental repertoire, which often raises eyebrows with its metaphoric, sometimes metaphysical statements. Here, Vogel went for the shock factor, depicting a large, cartoonish model of a penis being pulled by a fleet of white giraffes, complete with explanatory plates describing various diseases and conditions like erectile dysfunction. Cartoonish? Yes. Shocking? Definitely.

In referring to the Venice Biennale this year, Wallpaper recently said, Stark reminders of a raging war were never far from sight or mind, and this is most evident in the centerpiece of the Ukrainian pavilion. A piece created by the pavilions curators, this stirring sculpture contains a multitude of stacked sandbags to represent the countrys efforts to protect their art from war damage a reminder thats both stirring and symbolic. Other notable Ukrainian offerings include The Fountain of Exhaustion by artist Pavlo Makov, which only arrived at the exhibition due to the perilous efforts of curator Maria Lanko to transport the piece beginning on the same day Russia began its attack.

Statements and reactions to the war in Ukraine were not limited to the countrys own pavilion. French artist JR presented a large photograph of a young Ukrainian refugee in this statement-maker that puts a human face on the tragedies of war. Its also been featured on the cover of Time and is part of the ongoing exhibition This is Ukraine: Defending Freedom.

A curvy, faceless hybrid thats equal parts sensual and unrecognizably recognizable, Invitation is another potent representation thats visceral and colorful, perfectly in keeping with exhibitions central surrealist theme. Located in the Austrian pavilion, the sculpture is perched above the viewer on a plinth, presented as a figure to be worshipped and admired.

The Venice Biennale 2022 runs from April 23rd through November 22nd, 2022 at the Giardini and the Arsenale.

Is it possible to transplant heads? – BioEdge

Posted: at 2:23 am

Heaven has different meanings for different people. For some transhumanists HEAVEN is an acronym for (HEad Anastomosis VENture), an attempt by an Italian and a Chinese surgeon to transplant a living head onto a living body. They have been working on this project for several years and claim to have had some success with animals.

This ambitious experiment by Sergio Canavero and Xiaoping Ren raises as many philosophical questions as it does neurological and surgical ones. The current issue of the Journal of Medicine & Philosophy examines some of the complications, assuming that it is even possible to remove a head from one body and transplant it onto another body.

One of the contributors, J. Clint Parker, of East Carolina University, asks whether the project contributes to human flourishing:

Dr. Canaveros initiative raises profound questions about what type of life is worth living, and importantly, what type of life is worth living forever. Even if there is something important about enduring, is it good for human beings to endure forever as they are now? The stakes seem to go up the longer one lives, and it seems likely that rather than giving human beings enhanced existence, head transplantation, at least for the foreseeable future, would likely lead to a diminished existence. Even if it worked perfectly, it seems widely improbable that simply anastomosing a new body onto a head would keep the brain perpetually young.

"RRR" asks the important question: what if two legendary revolutionaries who were active at the same time in colonial India actually met? Better yet, what if they were best friends? Better yet, what if one betrayed the other in a melodramatic twist of fate that ended in a climactic musical showdown that basically ends in them becoming god-like superheroes? That's "RRR," the incredible, insane, maximalist Indian Telugu-language epic directed by S. S. Rajamouli.

"RRR" tells the (fictionalized) story of Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao), two real-life revolutionaries who, again, probably weren't best friends in real life. But "RRR" imagines that they were, in the most eye-popping, adrenaline-pumping, hyperstylized action flick of the year.

In "RRR," Raju is a police officer working for the British Raj who is tasked with finding and arresting the legendary Bheem, a sort of John Wick-ian figure (except with more tiger punching) who protects the peaceful Gond tribe, after the British governor forcibly takes one of the Gond tribes' young girls as a pet for his wife. But Raju and Bheem, disguising himself as a lowly Muslim mechanic, unknowingly meet for the first time while rescuing a young boy from a train crash and instantly become best friends by virtue of their equivalent manliness (and also through a musical montage straight out of a rom-com). All this time, Raju doesn't know that Bheem is the man he is hunting, and Bheem doesn't know that Raju is actually an undercover cop working to steal weapons away from the British government. It all climaxes in a fiery inferno of betrayal, more tiger punching, motorcycle-throwing, and a viral musical sequence where Raju and Bheem happily outdance a bunch of white people. Take that, imperialism. (Hoai-Tran Bui)

Trevor Swinburne on Carlisle United’s 1981/2 promotion: ‘We had class and quality…’ – News & Star

Posted: at 2:21 am

There were no medals, nothing like that, says Trevor Swinburne as he remembers the last time Carlisle United rose into English footballs second tier, four decades ago yesterday. But there are memories to trigger the feeling that, 40 years ago, we were doing alright

The 1981/2 season saw the Blues win their last game at Chester to finish second in Division Three on goal difference. Bob Stokoes team did not receive silverware, but Swinburne the teams ever-present goalkeeper has other mementoes.

We were allowed to keep our shirts that we wore that night at Chester. Ive still got that. It was a nice jersey had a green collar, in a cottony material. I would like to say I still fit in it, but I dont

Swinburne is 68 but retains a razor sharp command of the detail of one of Uniteds finest hours. It is hard to imagine the Blues reaching the Championship just now but, in the early eighties, second-tier football was not such an alien experience.

Carlisle had, after all, spent much of the late 1960s and early 1970s at that level. After falling from the top flight in the latter of those decades, it took the hardened figure of Stokoe, in a second managerial spell, to take them back up.

He did so with an experienced, tightly-knit side in which Swinburne was the last line of reliability. Having joined from Sunderland in 1977, he proved an adept goalkeeper behind a strong defensive line, in a team whose climb culminated at Sealand Road, Chester, on May 19, 1982.

Typically, this being Carlisle United, there was unnecessary drama before that day, because Stokoes team, despite an increasingly potent season, lost the first two of their last three games when promotion seemed assured.

Bob Stokoe, second right

Thats right we went down to Wimbledon and lost 3-1, then we had Bristol Rovers at home on the Saturday, Swinburne says. We only needed a point, and I think wed only lost one home game all seasonso of course we went on to lose that one 2-1 as well.I blame myself for that, because on my way down to the ground I bought a bottle of champagne to celebrate. That backfired...

Swinburne does not believe it was a case of outright promotion jitters, but something was still preventing United from kicking for home. When the finishing line is in sight, you need just a little bit more to get there. Perhaps it was subconscious.

The pressure was building all the time. Going down to Chester, despite the poor season theyd had...we were a little bit apprehensive about it.

---------------

Chester, already relegated, were a largely bereft side, having infamously lost to Penrith in that season's FA Cup. Yet they gave United a contest. We were under quite a bit of pressure in the first half and I had quite a bit to do," Swinburne says. "We managed to survive...and then Pop scored.

Pop Robson celebrates the goal at Chester that took United up in 1982

Following a corner, Robson, Carlisles veteran forward, fired the clinical first-half goal that would seal their Second Division status. That gave us a bit of leeway, and in the second half we took more control," Swinburne says. "The last 10-15 minutes seemed like an eternity, but I vividly remember Tommy Craig and Russell Coughlin coming into their own, and late on managing to keep the ball up near the corner flag, well away from me.

All the Carlisle fans started to gather to come onto the pitch. Chester had a free-kick, and Stevie Ludlam an ex-Carlisle player very kindly hung it up nice and I came out and caught it on the penalty spot. The referee was right beside me and said, Give me the ball, keeper, its all over.

I gave him the ball, he blew the whistle, and all the Carlisle fans started coming on from the far end of the pitch. In my goal I always used to take a cap and gloves, so I went back to get them before trying to get off the pitch. But by this time the Carlisle fans were over the halfway line. I had no chance! But everybody was so happy, so ecstatic.

Swinburne and his team-mates eventually battled their way into the dressing room. The smiles never left our faces. We went into the Chester directors box and were able to acknowledge the fans on the pitch.

Afterwards, I didnt come back in the team bus; I came back with Gordon Staniforth and Russell Coughlin in one of the fans cars. We went to a pub in Carlisle, near the castleand later that night I stupidly was going to take my car back home. Gordon said, Trevor, dont - get a taxi, itll be a bad end to a great day if something silly happens.

That was a good piece of advice. I got home, lay in bed, the room started going roundand next day I got a taxi down and picked up my car.

When heads cleared, there could at last be a sense of satisfaction at Carlisle's promotion, which was led by their uncompromising manager.Swinburne had been signed by Bobby Moncur, but it was Stokoe who had pointed them back in the right direction.

Bob didnt suffer fools, says the goalkeeper. He was a vastly experienced manager, and if people didn't fulfil what he saw as his pattern of play and team demand, they werent around for very long.

"I know he pulled his hair out not that he had much to pull with people like Paul Bannon. Paul did wonderful things but silly things as well. But as far as defensive work was concerned, I dread to think what he would say about this playing out from the back you see today. He was all, Get the ball forwardif youre in doubt, get it out.

---------------

Carlisle used 20 players across the entire season, many of them established regulars. Swinburne had to become such a figure across his time at Brunton Park. I had a long history with Bob because he was my manager at Sunderland. I always got the impression there that he didnt like inexperienced players.

At Sunderland I was battling against Jimmy Montgomery, who had loads of experience. I would come in and, no matter how well I did, I was always pushed out again. So it was nice to get to Carlisle.

Swinburne joined United from Sunderland in 1977

Allan Ross was the goalkeeper then, and Rossy was so helpful to me. One of his attributes was talking to defenders, whereas I was a lot quieter. To be able to listen to Rossy as he explained how to organise things was invaluable to me. I will always be grateful to him for that.

It meant that by the time Bob came to Carlisle [in 1980], I was a much more experienced player and I remember the season before we got promotion when Bob and [trainer] Dick Young went behind my goal when we were playing at Burnley. Bob said he wanted to see how I communicated with my defence. He had been a centre-half in his day and knew how important it was. He said, 'I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw that night'. So he decided I was going to be the goalkeeper in our push for promotion the following season.

Swinburne therefore remained a consistent touchstone in a side of other seasoned pros. There was class and there was quality through that team. You look at Tommy Craig, Pop Robson, Bobby Parker, Dave Rushbury, Keith Houghton, Jackie Ashurst. Good, solid players.

"From a goalkeepers point of view, having a settled back four was really important.Going forward there was a lot of creativity. I had a high regard for Russell Coughlin, who was great in the middle of the field, and Tommy Craig. Then up front you had Paul Bannon: a bit of an ungainly sort of player but really effective and scored some vital goals for us, as did Gordon Stanny.

A lot of credit has to go to Bob for the way he wheeled and dealed. The selling of Peter Beardsley [to Vancouver Whitecaps] didnt go down too well but it brought in the money to allow Bob to put the team together that got promotion. A great piece of management, really.

It was a team that accumulated many motorway miles in their pursuit of success. There was some good banter," Swinburne says. "I remember on one trip, Gordon Staniforth was in charge of the videos to watch on the bus. He put one on something quite gruesome, I wont say what it was and Bob didnt like it.

He went up and said, I dont know who got this thing, but Im not watching it. And flung the video half the length of the bus to Gordon"

Gordon Staniforth, one of the stars of the 1981/2 promotion side

Swinburne went on to play every game in 1982/3 as United acclimatised to Division Two with a mid-table finish. By the end of that campaign he had made the best part of 300 appearances for the club. Yet his time at Brunton Park then suddenly came to an end.

The issue was the offer of a new contract that was verymiserly, in my opinion, he says. I knew there were people coming in who were earning a lot more than me. I was on 155 a week, and got offered 170 a week. For someone that was ever-present for two seasons, and achieved a bit of success, I didnt think that was a good enough offer.

The club never came back with an improved offer. I dug my heels in and said, Right, Im going. My wife asked where I wanted to go to. I said, I dont mind, as long as its not London. Anyway, I ended up at Brentford

Swinburne chuckles at that , but maintains it was not a good feeling to leave Carlisle. Id just moved house the Christmas before we left. I thought I was well settled. Two of my three sons are Cumbrians and we loved the area. It just became a matter of principle.

Ive always regretted it. My heart is Carlisle.

Swinburnes time at Brentford was not so enjoyable, and he then joined Leeds, where he was back-up to the future Carlisle keeper, coach and manager Mervyn Day. Lincoln City then offered him first-team football and he saw out his career at Sincil Bank, making roots in the city even though the Imps were relegated from the Football League in 1987. A vastly different calling then came.

---------------

Whilst at Brentford, a neighbour who worked in the prison service had suggested it might offer a career option after football. It intrigued Swinburne and, as he hung up his gloves, he pursued it.

Initially he headed into the service as a physical education instructor, but felt there was better scope for promotions, and a pension, if he became a prison officer. Over the years he worked at HMP Stocken, HMP Lincoln and HMP Leicester, working his way up to senior officer and then governor positions.

It was quite a change, he says. But I loved it. I think the best thing I can say is that if you watchPorridge[the 1970s sitcom starring Ronnie Barker], it is a real true reflection of life in prison. Its about one team the prisoners trying to get one up on the other team the officers and humour is a big thing.

It's a strange environment. Its like a microcosm of the world behind the big walls. You get some real horrible characters, and yet you have to deal with them. I always worked along the lines of if somebodys ok with me, Ill be ok back. If someones creating me problems all the time they will get what theyre entitled to but nothing more.

Are there crossovers from football? Yes I think its the team aspect.I was always working on the rehabilitation side. Im a great believer that some people go through their lives and make a mistake, and that knocks them off the rails. The vision of the prison service is to get them back on the rails, give them employability skills and so on. I like to think we did some good work. We certainly tried to.

Swinburne, who lives in Lincoln, with his grandchildren

Swinburne left the service in 2012 and, busy in retirement, drove across America, visited family in Australia and devoted time to his grandchildren and his garden. He accepted a job driving disadvantaged children to school and, until recently, was chairman of the Lincoln City former players association.

He watches his old club at Sincil Bank, where often he encounters another familiar Carlisle face in the Lincoln-based 1990s defender Dean Walling. Yet it is some time since he reconnected with the Blues players of his own era.

Just before Covid, we holidayed in the Lakes, and I went to Brunton Park and stood outside the gate, went into the club shop, just reminisced a little bit," he says. "Id like to go back to a game some time and see if anyone I know is still there.

I did keep in touch with some of the lads at first, but as time passes the contact gets slimmer. It would be nice to relive what we did in '82 again with the people who shared the experiences.

Those boys will always have their respected part in Carlisle Uniteds history, and the achievement appears ever more precious as the years go by. In a footballers career you dont get too many promotions, and I experienced two in nearly 20 years," Swinburne says. "Without a doubt, what we did at Carlisle is up there amongst my most special memories.
