Chemical innovator invests in automation to drive green growth – The Manufacturer

Posted: May 20, 2022 at 2:31 am

A manufacturer of innovative, eco-friendly domestic cleaning products is forecasting 25% growth and creating new jobs after investing in a new automation technology.

Qualkem (formerly Repclif Chemical Services), based in Crewe, has installed new tube labelling and filling machinery specifically for short production runs.

The second generation family business with 16 staff has been developing and making chemicals for half a century, and believes that the solution which uses up to 100% recycled plastic tubes and closures, 85% recycled polyurethane labels that are in-line applied, and 85% recycled cardboard packaging is unique to the market and will give it a competitive edge.

As a result, Qualkem is forecasting 25% sales growth over the next three years and creating two new jobs, while upskilling several existing roles.

The 57,500 technology investment, supported by a 20,000 grant from Made Smarters North West adoption programme, will also give the company visibility and access to valuable production data to drive continuous improvement across its processes.

Ivan Anketell-Clifford, Director, said: Introducing the automatic tube labelling and filling machinery will see the start of our commitment to digitalisation. Not only will it allow us to offer another packaging regime to our existing customer base, but it will also allow us to actively market to new sectors, for example cosmetics.

The new Rigao machinery is going to make a huge difference to our companys future and will help us achieve our true potential. Moreover, this digitalisation project will allow us to offer customers the ability to source green chemistry in green packaging, driving more sustainably packaged products into the marketplace, doing our bit for society and the environment.

The impact of Made Smarters support has been instantaneous and we see them as an important partner to assist other technology projects as we search for production efficiencies, as part of our continued growth plans.

Launched by chemical engineer Robert Frazer and industrial chemist Doug Holt in 1971, as Repclif Chemical Services, the business has worked with many blue chip companies and household brands including Mercedes-Benz, Rowenta, Lakeland and Portaloo.

For the last two years the business has been run by Roberts son-in-law Ivan and daughter Rachael who have embarked on a change in business strategy focussed on developing its own label, or dual branded product ranges in partnership with market leading wholesale/distributors in growth sectors. The business was rebranded as Qualkem in January.

Donna Edwards, Made Smarters North West Adoption Programme Director, said: We are delighted to be supporting Qualkem on the first stage of its digital transformation. It is a fantastic example of a business using technology to automate how it manufactures products, creating growth, new jobs, new skills, while laying the foundation for further improvements.

Qualkem is among hundreds of manufacturers in the region grasping the opportunities offered by Made Smarter which include expert, impartial technology advice, digital transformation workshops to help take that first step to transform a business, and support with technology investment. I would encourage other SME manufacturers to do the same.

Steve Wynn sued by US to force his registration as a Chinese agent after alleged lobby to protect Macau operations – Yogonet International

Posted: at 2:31 am

The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday sued former Wynn Resorts CEO Stephen Wynnseeking to compel him to register as a foreign agent. The lawsuit alleges the casino mogul lobbied Donald Trump in 2017 on behalf of the Chinese government, which sought the return of an exiled businessman.

In the complaint filed in federal court in Washington D.C., the Justice Department said Wynn engaged in those efforts at the request of Sun Lijun, a former Vice Minister of Chinas ministry of public security, and did so to protect the operations of casinos in Macau owned by Wynns company. The government in Macau had restricted the number of gaming tables and machines that could be operated at Wynns casino, the complaint alleges, and he was scheduled to renegotiate licenses to operate casinos in 2019.

The action marks the first affirmative civil lawsuit under FARA in more than three decades, Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Departments National Security Division, said in a statement Tuesday, referring to the Foreign Agents Registration Act, Bloomberg reports. The law, which has been invoked in criminal cases, requires individuals to register with the U.S. attorney general before lobbying on behalf of foreign nationals.

The department said it had advised Wynn repeatedly over the last four years to register under FARA, and it is suing now because Wynn refused to do so.

Wynns lawyers rejected the charges and said they would contest the suit. Steve Wynn has never acted as an agent of the Chinese government and had no obligation to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, Reid Weingarten and Brian Heberlig said in a statement. We respectfully disagree with the Department of Justices legal interpretation of FARA and look forward to proving our case in court.

The Justice Department brought a civil lawsuit against Wynn because charging him with a criminal violation would have required the government to prove he willingly violated the law, according to Bloomberg.

Elliott Broidy, a former Trump fundraiser who pleaded guilty to illegal lobbying, sought Wynns help on behalf of Sun, according to the lawsuit. Broidy had been cooperating with prosecutors in their investigation of fugitive businessman Jho Lows push on behalf of China for the U.S. to extradite Guo Wengui, a wealthy exile who criticized Chinas government.According to the court filing, Wynn told Trump during a June 2017 dinner about the Chinese governments desire to have the businessman removed from the US, and gave the mans passport photos to Trumps secretary.

The case is Attorney General of the US v. Stephen A. Wynn, 1:22-cv-013712, US District Court, District of Columbia.

Steve Wynn stepped down from Wynn Resortsin 2018 after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct. In March, the Nevada Supreme Court said a lower court lacked jurisdictional standing when it ruled in 2020 that state gaming regulators dont have jurisdiction over Wynn after he left Wynn Resorts on his own. The seven justices unanimouslyruled that Clark County District Court JudgeAdriana Escobarshould not have decided the matter because the Nevada Gaming Commission had not yet ruled on a 2019 request by the Gaming Control Board to have Wynn declared formally unsuitable to hold a gaming license.

Predictions for the Future of Low-Code Automation – insideBIGDATA

Posted: at 2:31 am

As automation adoption and usage become table stakes of the modern enterprise, an increasingly tech-savvy generation of workers is emerging to supply the accompanying IT support. These individuals not only want powerful software tools; they need them to succeed in their roles, to be more engaged and agile as they move through their responsibilities, and drive results for their organization. Low-code technology is positioned as the solution for sustaining that technical appetite.

While some organizations may already be familiar with low code, the low code of a few years ago is quickly evolving to become even more accessible. As businesses plan their IT investments and consider if the innovation is a fit for their needs, heres what they can look forward to:

Low code will become more prevalent across all business functionsnot just IT

Traditionally, automation usage and application development has been reserved to those in IT and engineering. While this ownership makes sense given those individuals expertise, it also creates a bottleneck for the wider organization when it comes to innovation. With limited bandwidth, IT teams are often unable to service every one of their colleagues requests in a timely manner, which can hinder larger workflows if a technical issue is keeping an employee from executing his or her responsibilities.

With low code, workers outside of IT can take software development into their own hands: all they need is a foundational understanding of how to use a computer. Low-code automation requiresas the name insistslittle to no coding to design and launch, making it an intuitive tool for bringing workers across industries and technical experience into the folds of innovation. When users across the business can build simple and even complex automations themselves, IT professionals can focus on more strategic projects that demand their expertise. As a result, the business at large is able to solve more problems, pursue new objectives or opportunities and better compete in the market.

Even more democratizing is the emergence of no-code automationthough the lack of coding may come across as conceptually confusing to new users. This knowledge gap underscores the need for more accessible automation education in order to unlock no and low codes potential at scale. Specialized training programs can help employees better understand how to leverage these technologies to execute their everyday responsibilities more efficiently.

Whereas individuals outside of IT and engineering roles may not understand coding, they do understand business processes, which is where employers will need to focus when they introduce low code and no code and accompanying training programs to their organizations. Regardless of the industry or area of business they are working within, employees can leverage low codes versatility to support the routine processes essential to their roles.

To this end, low code not only makes workers jobs more efficientit also has the potential to make them more effective. A low-code interface allows users to link systems to pull information from so that they can easily make business decisions rooted in data. For example, low-code applications can be configured to auto-populate routine forms using information from financial or CRM systems so that employees can spend more time analyzing it rather than sourcing it.

Low-code advancements will make the technology even more accessible

In order for workers with less formal technology training to leverage low-code tools and create their own automations, these technologies need to be intuitive. In response to this need, a wave of advancements in low-code platforms is making this ease-of-use a reality, including:

The increasing ubiquity of automation within modern enterprises is paving the way for a new, technology-infused world of work. However, to capitalize on that trend and become fully automated enterprises, organizations need to supply employees, even the non-technical ones, with the tools and training needed to ensure automation is at the fingertips of every person. Fortunately, the future of low code is an accessible one, meaning more workers across verticals and job functions can put the technologys power to use to make more agile and informed decisionsand drive their businesses forward as a result.

Increasing adoption of robots in pharmaceutical manufacturing, government initiatives to promote industrial development, rising investments for transforming conventional production facilities, and growing demand for safe and digitized production processes are expected to support the growth of this market during the forecast period.

The high initial cost of procuring automation hardware and software is expected to restrain the growth of this market. Furthermore, the growing demand for IIoT in pharmaceutical manufacturing and the huge demand for vaccine manufacturing for COVID-19 are expected to offer significant growth opportunities for players operating in this market. However, the limited availability of skilled laborers and cybersecurity risks associated with automated systems are major challenges for the growth of this market.

The Impact of COVID-19 on the Pharmaceutical Automation Market

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for testing and production, resulting in an increased demand for automation solutions. The pharma sector has transitioned from ad hoc automation deployments to implementing robots as an important tool in the global battle against COVID-19. The requirement for robot arms for viral DNA testing has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, many pharmaceutical companies have quickly adopted automation and robotics solutions for automated COVID-19 testing.

Pharmaceutical companies have effectively utilized the advantages of automation to maintain or increase production without compromising quality or safety. Warsaw expects to get blocked EU funds within ‘months’ – Macau Business

Posted: at 2:31 am

Poland expressed confidence Thursday that it would soon receive the post-Covid recovery funds that the European Union had blocked because of its concerns over the rule of law there.

In the coming months already, this money will start to flow from the EU budget, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters.

The EU member announced last week that it had concluded negotiations with Brussels over the blocked funds of around 35 billion euros ($37 billion).

Brussels had refused to release them because of concerns that a controversial disciplinary mechanism for judges in Poland undermined judicial independence.

Morawiecki said that while the two sides have come to an agreement, the EUs economic and financial affairs council still needs to give its greenlight and Warsaw must make legislative changes.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for her part said in a letter Tuesday that Poland would have to prove that it had met the necessary conditions before any disbursement under the Recovery and Resilience Facility could take place.

Last week the Commission said that Poland would have to dismantle the contested Supreme Court disciplinary chamber, reform the disciplinary regime and allow judges affected by the disciplinary chambers decisions to be reinstated.

Morawiecki said Thursday that the disciplinary chamber as it stands will be abolished.

Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller explained that a presidential draft law on the matter was expected to be put up for a vote in parliament next week, adding that it contained all of the conditions set out by Brussels.

Theres the reform of the disciplinary system, the abolishment of the disciplinary chamber, and when it comes to the reinstatement of judges, were offering a procedure which would make that possible, he told Polish independent news channel TVN24.
