Incredible images of Grand Canyon of Mars will make your jaw drop in wonder – Hindustan Times
Posted: May 21, 2022 at 6:32 pm
Mars has always been an object of fascination for many since centuries. With the advancement of technology, the scientists are now starting to discover more about the enigmatic Red Planet. Also, thanks to the various social media profiles by the space agencies, people are also getting to know intriguing details about Earths neighbouring planet. Just like this post on Grand Canyon of Mars. The post besides mesmerising people with incredible images, also teaches them more about Mars.
European Space agency posted the images on their official Instagram page. They also shared a detailed caption. Deep in the Grand Canyon of Mars. Hebes Chasma is an enclosed, almost 8000 m-deep trough in the most northern part of Valles Marineris, the 3000-km long Grand Canyon of Mars, they wrote.
The steep flanks of the trough show branched incisions and small veins of rock. Below the flanks, run-off and material from larger landslides is visible. A flat-topped mountain is located in the centre of Hebes Chasma (3). It reaches 8000 m above the graben floor and rises to almost the same height as the plain surrounding the trough. The mountain is made up of numerous rock layers stacked on top of each other, perhaps made out of remnants of an older plateau, sediments from a lake, wind-blown sediments or volcanic rocks. The rock layers were exposed by erosion, they added.
The origin of Hebes Chasma is thought to be connected to the nearby Tharsis Region, which was uplifted in the course of intense volcanism. The uplift created tremendous amounts of stress in the crust forming a series of faults oriented radially. Data acquired by the OMEGA spectrometer on-board Mars Express has revealed water-bearing minerals such as gypsum in some areas of Hebes Chasma. This is proof that at least significant quantities of water once existed in Hebes Chasma, ESA also explained.
Take a look at the incredible images that may make your jaw drop in wonder:
The video has been posted about 15 hours ago. Since being shared, it has also accumulated nearly 11,000 likes and the numbers are only increasing. The share has also prompted people to post various comments.
Wonderful, fascinating, and powerful Mars, shared an Instagram user. Amazing, expressed another. This stuns me, commented a third. Thats pretty epic, wrote a fourth.
What are your thoughts on the post?

Your Voice: What would it take to colonise Mars and make it livable? – YP

Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind, said US astronaut Neil Armstrong when he stepped onto the moon in 1969. This journey opened the door to many new possibilities for the future, including the idea of colonising space.
While it would be incredibly hard, it would not be impossible to colonise a foreign planet. This depends on the planets climate, time periods, rotational periods, and more. One of the best choices is Mars.
Mars is a terrestrial planet with a very thin atmosphere, unlike Earth, and has only one-third the gravity. However, Mars is very small compared to Earth, and its atmospheric pressure is less than ours. Thus, there is no water on the planet. Thankfully, Mars has many icebergs that can be used as water when melted, so it is not a lost cause.
Astronomers reveal first image of black hole at Milky Ways centre
In other aspects, Mars is similar to Earth, with comparable time periods for its days, seasons, and rotational periods, which make it a great candidate for colonisation. Its soil is also good for plants and has many beneficial components.
A process called terraforming would be necessary for the planet to be properly colonised. This is the process of transforming a planet, making it as similar to Earth as possible. Mars thin atmosphere makes it vulnerable to solar radiation, which would slowly strip the atmosphere and dry up the water. The terraforming process would involve replicating the Earths magnetic field and making Mars atmosphere thicker. This would stop the sun from breaking down the atmosphere.
Terraforming takes hundreds of years, and it would be ages before Mars had oxygen. The timescale for producing an oxygen-rich atmosphere on Mars is 10,000 x 17 years, or around 170,000 years, said Nasa experts Aaron Berliner and Chris McKay. However, if humanity needed space before that, biodomes made of glass would also be an option. Many plants could be grown inside to create oxygen in the dome.
It would take a lot of work to make Mars a place where humans could live. Photo: Shutterstock
Since the biodomes need light, they could be made out of high-performance glass that can keep oxygen within the dome. Because of the thin atmosphere on Mars, solar radiation would be much stronger than on Earth.
To solve this problem, the glass used to build biodomes would need to be thicker and slightly tinted. Building biodomes in the shelter of Martian caves would also be an option.
Then, buildings and houses could be constructed, eventually turning the biodome into a small city. We could build multiple connected biodomes on the surface of Mars, enough for a civilisation to develop.
Astronomers discover new type of star explosion - a micronova
A huge problem with colonising the Red Planet would be the difference in gravity. Mars has a gravity level of 0.38g, about a third of Earths, 1g. This makes moving around on the surface much easier. Nevertheless, there would still be a few problems for humans.
Their eyeballs might change shape and make work impossible; the heart might not be able to pump blood through the body and muscles might severely cramp up, said Mary Roach in her book Packing For Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void.
All in all, colonising space is an exciting idea that people have spent years thinking about. One day it could even become a reality, rather than the fantasy it is now.

Parents must accept their LGBT+ kids
Hilary Wong Kwok-hei, St Pauls Secondary School

Did you watch the hit show Ossans Love? If you did, did you enjoy the budding romance between the two male protagonists?
Imagine you had a child who told you they were gay how would you react? If you are fine with who they are and accept them, thats wonderful! Unfortunately, thats not the case for many parents in Hong Kong.
Nowadays, more people have come to terms with their sexuality and are comfortable identifying as queer.
But the older generation of Hong Kong, like parents and grandparents, still regards everything LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and more) as a sin or unnatural. They grew up in a society where people used slurs to describe those in the queer community and even committed violence against them, and they have struggled to adapt to a more accepting world.
Im pretty sure Im straight - or am I?
However, their lack of acceptance has troubled LGBT+ teens. Parents are supposed to love and support their children no matter the circumstance. But many teens choose to hide who they are because they know they wont be accepted by their parents, or worse that they could be disowned. It is upsetting that many of them dont feel safe coming out and choose to stay in the closet.
Parental expectations, and the fear of rejection if they fail to live up to them, prevent queer teens from coming to terms with who they are.
Compulsive heterosexuality is one example. This is the theory that heterosexuality is assumed and enforced upon a person. Since birth, girls are taught and told repeatedly that they must only date guys and vice versa, and if they dont, they are outcasts and sinners. How will teens ever know who they are if they are not introduced to the different possibilities? Parents ignorant beliefs prevent their children from being who they truly are.
Parents should accept their kids no matter what. Photo: Shutterstock
If you are a parent, you have to understand that your childs sexuality is not a choice. Instead of shaming and shunning them, why not embrace them and help them go through this journey?
Even though they are queer, they are the same person inside and out, the same child you have raised since birth. Their sexuality shouldnt be a barrier between you two, and it may even help you grow closer as you support them through the process of discovering themselves.
And if you are a teen struggling with your identity, remember to never be ashamed of who you are. Sexuality is a spectrum, and even if you are different from others, it doesnt make you an outcast. If your loved ones cant accept you for who you are, you can try to give them time to understand. Eventually, they will come around. And if they dont, just remember that you are not alone, and there are other people that love you for who you are.
As Lady Gaga sings in Born This Way, No matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgender life, Im on the right track, baby, I was born to survive. We are all born equal, and our sexuality does not define us. We used to fight for tolerance, but now we fight for acceptance. Hopefully, there will be a future in which all parents can accept their children for who they are.

Booker to turn 100 on Sunday – Journal Review
Posted: at 6:30 pm
Nick Wilson | nwilson@jrpress.com
Living a long, healthy life means staying hungry.
Maxine Booker, who turns 100 on Sunday, said staying hungry will not only help one avoid physical disparity, but will help one stay focused on whats important in life.
That was her sentiment Thursday at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville where she is often visited by family and friends. However, she also thoroughly enjoys word searches, crafts and naps in her down time.
If you stay a little bit hungry all the time, youll get old and live longer, Booker said. If you fill up every meal, you dont live long. Leave em just a little bit hungry, and stay hungry. Probably from the time I was 16, I was a little bit hungry all the time.
But she wasnt always so fond of her word searches.
I have a word search. I never used to like them. I thought it was dumb, because all you do is look for them, but now I play with it. What else do I do? I used to do more than I do now, she added. I sleep well, thats a blessing. I sleep a lot in the daytime and I sleep good at night. In fact, I hate to get up. But after youre up a while, youre OK.
She was born May 22, 1922, to Ben and Hazel Wilson on the familys Browns Valley farm about 10 miles southwest of Crawfordsville. She had a younger brother, Hubert Wilson, who passed some time ago, she said.
She graduated from Waveland High School in 1939 at the tender age of 16 after skipping the second grade at her Browns Valley primary school. Six years later, she married Carl Booker in Greencastle in 1945, before the couple settled in Crawfordsville.
Back then there would be two grades in one room, and the lower grade would listen to the other class and learn. I already knew the second grade, so they wanted to push me up to the third grade, Booker said.
They had one son, David Booker, who lives along the route between Crawfordsville and Browns Valley to this day. Maxine and Carl were married 51 years until his death in 1996.
She is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to a host of next-generation Bookers, including daughter-in-law Sandy, grandchildren Tom and Jami, and great-grandchildren in Jonavan, Max and Lyric.
Booker pondered Thursday if she is actually turning 100 or if she could be 101 due to the fact babies are born at age 0. But she had no qualms with the next 100 years of her life.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Zalatoris leads after bogey-free 65
TULSA, Okla. (AP) Will Zalatoris (zal-ah-TOHR-ihs) is the leader through two rounds of the PGA Championship Southern Hills in Tulsa. Zalatoris took the outright lead with a birdie on 17 and is 9 under following Fridays bogey-free, 5-under 65. That puts him one stroke ahead of Mito Pereira and three in front of Justin Thomas.
In the seven previous majors at Southern Hills, the leader after the second round went on to win.
Another good omen for Zalatoris is that hes won at the venerable Perry Maxwell layout before, doing so as a 17-year-old amateur in 2014.
Pereira surged up the leaderboard with a 6-under 64, one off the tournament record for lowest score. Thomas fired his second consecutive 67.
Bubba Watson matched the tournament scoring record with a 63 that leaves him four shots back.
First-round leader Rory McIlroy had his struggles on Friday, shooting a 71 that leaves him at minus-4. He's tied with Abraham Ancer (AN'-sur)
Tiger Woods made the cut with a 69 that included a pair of late birdies, putting him at plus-3.
Notables missing the cut are world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington.
MLB-SCHEDULE
Rojas hits 3 home runs to lead DBacks
UNDATED (AP) The weather was warm and the wind was blowing toward Waveland Avenue this afternoon, providing the perfect atmosphere for a home run derby at Wrigley Field. The players complied.
Arizona and Chicago combined for 11 home runs before the Diamondbacks completed a 10-6 win over the Cubs. Josh Rojas launched his first three longballs of the season and David Peralta furnished two of the Diamondbacks seven homers.
Arizona also received round-trippers from Alek Thomas and Christian Walker in winning its second straight since a six-game losing streak.
Jonathan Villar, Patrick Wisdom, rookie Christopher Morel and Ildemaro Vargas homered for the Cubs.
Elsewhere around the majors:
A winter storm warning caused the postponement of the Mets-Rockies game in Colorado. A split doubleheader is now scheduled for Saturday, but snow is in the morning forecast and gametime temperatures for Game 2 are expected to be in the low 30s.
The Yankees and White Sox will try to play two on Sunday in New York after Friday's game was rained out.
MLB-NEWS
Harper still out
UNDATED Phillies slugger Bryce Harper missed his fifth straight game on Friday versus the Dodgers, five days after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow.
The reigning NL MVP has been playing exclusively at designated hitter since injuring his arm on a throw from right field last month.
The Phillies originally hoped Harper could return on Tuesday.
Also around the majors:
The Reds activated Canadian slugger Joey Votto (VAH-toh) off the injured list before Fridays game in Toronto against the Blue Jays. The Reds also placed infielder Brandon Drury, outfielder Albert Almora, right-hander Joel Kuhnel and right-hander Tyler Mahle (MA-lee) on the restricted list. To enter the country, the Canadian government requires a person to have received a second COVID-19 vaccine dose or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least 14 days before entry.
The Tigers and Guardians were without their managers for Friday's game in Cleveland. Bench coach George Lombard is running the Tigers while A.J. Hinch deals with a non-COVID illness. Terry Francona is recovering from minor surgery and has been replaced by DeMarlo Hale, although the Guardians skipper is expected back on Saturday.
NHL-STARS-BOWNESS
Bowness wont be back as Stars coach
UNDATED (AP) Rick Bowness wont return as the coach of the Dallas Stars.
The 67-year-old Bowness says he is stepping away to allow the organization the opportunity to go in a different direction. The decision comes less than two years after he led the Stars to a surprising run to the Stanley Cup finals.
Dallas just lost a competitive seven-game series to Calgary in the first round.
Bowness was not under contract past this season. He has been on an NHL bench for a record 2,562 regular-season games as a head coach or an assistant over nearly four decades.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NEWS
Mountain West to eliminate 2-division format in football
UNDATED (AP) The Mountain West Conference is the latest league to say it will eliminate its two-division format in football for the 2023 season.
The conference has announced that the two teams with the highest winning percentage will compete in the league championship game. The decision came two days after the NCAA threw out requirements dictating how conferences can determine their champions and the Pac-12 scrapped its two-division format.
TENNIS-NEWS
Wimbledons Russia ban prompts tours to cut ranking points
PARIS (AP) The womens and mens professional tennis tours say they will not award ranking points for Wimbledon this year because of the All England Clubs ban on players from Russia and Belarus over the invasion of Ukraine.
The WTA and ATP announced their decisions two days before the start of the French Open and a little more than a month before play begins at Wimbledon on June 27.
The All England Club said in April it would not allow Russians or Belarusians to compete at the Grand Slam grass-court tournament. Russian athletes have been prevented from competing in many sports since the country began attacking Ukraine in February. Belarus has aided Russia in the invasion.

Wings ‘N’ Wheels event in Campbell River cancelled due to airport construction – CHEK
Posted: at 6:29 pm
A popular annual event in Campbell River has been cancelled for the third year in a row.
The City of Campbell River says the 2022 Wings N Wheels event will not be taking place this year due to construction at the airport.
The event had been scheduled to take place on July 10 and is expected to return in 2023.
Although we cannot facilitate the event in 2022, the community can look forward to its return in 2023, when necessary airport improvements are complete, Mayor Andy Adams said in a press release.
The Campbell River Airport has been a wonderful host of past events, adds Bill Alder, President of Sealand Aviation. With significant improvements coming to the airport in this summer, we simply dont have the space needed to put on the type of show that weve become accustomed to. We thank North Island Cruisers, City Council and City staff for their continued support of the event, and will return in 2023 with an event worth waiting for.
The Campbell River airport is undergoing $4.5 million worth of renovations and upgrades that include improvements to airport lighting, visual aids and taxiways.
With construction at a peak in July, it is not possible to provide an accessible environment to host this event in 2022, said Dennis Brodie, the airports manager.
Wings N Wheels has been hosted by Sealand Aviation, in partnership with the City of Campbell River since 2013. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A new stage for Mars: Web3 colonization of Mars has begun – Digital Journal
Posted: at 6:28 pm
Prague, Czech Republic, May 16, 2022, ZEXPRWIRE, Two NFT experts from the Czech Republic founded a brand new NFT project called Martian Colony. It took 6 months to present an ecosystem with races, hierarchy, and story-telling.
How about the thought that life on Mars began a long time ago? Before earthlings started researching the soil of the Red Planet and its potential? What if some so high-evolved civilization was hiding under a magnetic shield to protect against invasion? Such a high desire to reveal the truth!
There is a fantastic opportunity! Meet the first-ever high-quality organized project about Mars the Martian Colony NFT! Minters will feel so crazy happy about the project`s mindset and uniqueness. Only 5,555 3D NFTs; it is a big fortune to buy some. Now it is possible to get acquainted with the 4 out of 8 races accessible on Stage 1 of the project. Buyers will receive unrepeatable randomly generated Martian NFTs.
Discord link was announced. It shares a chance to join the community! 13 June 2022 all WL holders will get access to mint for 0.08 ETH. A public sale will be held on 15 June 2022.
After the full sold-out, these guys will upgrade all the NFTs to animated versions. It is so rare in the NFT market that the team is so attentive to details and cares about the projects future.
Martian Colony NFT is aware of their own Metaverse as well. They have already started building a whole ecosystem on the blockchain. An NFT holder will have an opportunity to use a Martian avatar to enroll in the extraterrestrial world. Play games like Martian Battle based on the MMORPG genre, fight enemies, buy lands and real estate, explore the Colony on hovercrafts and other personal vehicles. All these activities will pump a character. It will help to aim the goals and get special bonuses in the Metaverse. Holders will also choose the further evolution of the project with the DAO establishment depending on the owned NFT quantity.
After all the NFTs are sold out on Stage 1, the Martian Colony NFT founders will announce the dates of a 5-day trip to Prague, Czech Republic (Europe). 33 lucky holders of 3 Martians will get an all-expenses-paid stay in a 5* hotel in the center of the city, enriched cultural life (like visiting the castle in Prague and sightseeing), a get-together with founders in a fabulous restaurant, and a half-day party on the boat down the river Vltava with live music and DJ!
But still, nothing can outshine the creators` fantasy for the project and dive into a Martian trip. Not only Mars but its citizens also have a remarkable story. Each race is unique and specific. They are so different in temperant, traits, and what is more appearance. Labour are hard-working with their 4 hands and have a complicated character in the desire to get a higher rank. Civilians hands touch the ground as their feet; they look extra and have constant conflicts with the mafia. Scientist advanced and evolved race, the whole amount of information they know can only fit the two heads (by the way, they have both). Governing entrusted with a supernatural power establishers of life on Mars who can levitate.
What is more there is a one-of-a-kind piece NFT, Supreme Leader on Mars a lucky holder of this rarity will get 5.555 $. This NFT doesnt match with any from the collection. It is specially created apart from the others, inimitable and unique.
NFT avatars will be the legit pass to a future Metaverse. Phobos will be the first city opened for strolling and exploring by the Martian Colony club members. Imagine buying the first flat in a skyscraper in the center of the Red Planet. Dazzling possibilities.

WATCH: Apple TV Plus Releases Trailer For Season 3 Of ‘For All Mankind’ – We Got This Covered
Posted: at 6:28 pm
The Apple TV Plus streaming service now has an extensive slate of original programming and has just revealed the trailer for the third season of one of its initial offerings in the For All Mankind space series.
The footage for the next chapter of the alternate history look at the space race debuted on YouTube earlier today. In it we see the characters we know manning a mission to Mars, racing against the Soviet Union who leads the space race in the series.
The next chapter premieres June 10 and we also get looks at aspects of space exploration the public knows today but in the earlier time period of the Clinton era.
Some say private citizens have no business in space exploration. I emphatically disagree.
Later on, Joel Kinnamans Edward Baldwin hints at large-scale human colonization of the red planet, worries about his crews survival, and others at NASA discuss things they are searching for even now.
You wanna tell us where the water is?
For All Mankind also stars Shantel VanSanten as Karen Baldwin, Jodi Balfour as Ellen Wilson, Krys Marshall as Danielle Poole, Casey W. Johnson as Danny Stevens, and features Jeff Branson as Neil Armstrong. The series has been critically acclaimed during its run and has an 87 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and has included public figures like Richard Nixon, Ted Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Gary Hart, and Tom Brokaw in archive footage alongside figures like John Lennon, Jim Lovell and former astronaut Frank Borman, too.
