With the surge in online gambling activity comes a doubling of crypto-betting – Casino News Daily
Posted: May 17, 2022 at 7:32 pm
Parsing the numbers from several online gambling-focused markets reports, its easy to put facts with the anecdotes that online gambling virtually exploded when people were shuttered from terrestrial casinos.
Our go-to source for in-depth analysis is H2 Gambling Capital because they do one thing and they do it very well. However, breaking that data out for more general reporting can sometimes be a chore without reward. When others have already simplified the big picture, we can rely on those sources for the broad strokes and use the H2 data as a failsafe to confirm overall numbers and trends and as a checksum to verify the integrity of the previous reporting.
One of those sources is Statista. It can be a valuable resource when the numbers line up because some of the charts and graphs are publicly available. There is often a concise and comprehensive synopsis with visual aids.
One such survey is titled, Market size of the online gambling industry worldwide from 2019 to 2023. The bar graph with this report shows just three years 2019, 2020, and 2023. No figures are presented for the interim years of 2021 and 2022, but the trajectory tracks with reality and shows a near-doubling of market size by the end of next year (US$92.9b) based on 2019 numbers ($58.9b).
The numbers take into account changes such as the liberalization of the US Sports betting markets. While not predicting the massive fluctuations related to the world health emergency, the numbers still end up rhyming with reality when compared to more recent analyses.
Other valuable sources for this information include made-for-market forecasts with in-depth analysis such as those compiled and offered for sale by companies like Technavio. Their latest market report titled Online Gambling Market by Type, Device, and Geography Forecast and Analysis 2022-2026 shows an overall market growth for 2022 of 11.82%, eventual deceleration to 11.05% on average, and incremental growth of US$142.38b through 2026.
One interesting takeaway from that report is the reasoned prediction that the Asian Pacific region will contribute 37% of that growth with the increasing demand for mobile gaming playing its part as well. The analysis suggests that because the market is fragmented among several major players (888, bet365, Entain, LeoVegas, et al), operators should focus on growing business in the fastest-growing segments while maintaining their positions in the steady but slower growing segments they already occupy.
SOFTSWISS has released a report on gambling with cryptocurrency and a comparative analysis of the first quarters of 2021 and 2022 shows that crypto betting more than doubled in that period, up some 116.7%.
Additionally, the use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin increased against the use of fiat from 26.3% of all bets made in Q1 2021 to 35.96% in the first quarter of this year. The corollary decline in traditional currencies was from 73.7% of all bets in the first part of 2021 to just 64.04% in the first three months of 2022.
Andrey Starovoitov, COO at SOFTSWISS noted: Stable growth of cryptocurrencies in the iGaming market allows us to say that crypto gambling has become an independent, full-fledged, and extremely promising line of business.
Those brands that have adapted to these conditions and allowed their players to use all the benefits of cryptocurrencies have an advantage such as wider opportunities for operation and, accordingly, a wider audience.
Bitcoin is still the best known and most used alt-currency but that coins share over the overall crypto market is shrinking while other tokens such as ETH and LTC with BTC down 10 percentage points and ETH up in usage by 3.45%. Litecoins (LTC) share increased by 1.8 times. While BTC is still the favorite among online gamblers, the alternatives can be cheaper in transaction fees and faster to get through the blockchain.
While instant or near-instant payouts are quite common in the regulated markets of Europe thanks to eWallets and other banking methods being normalized by the local and regional governments, there are only a handful of operators in the US that payout in minutes or 24 hours at the longest. The fastest paying online casino settles up withdrawals in a matter of minutes and the funds are nearly always available in a crypto wallet within one hour. From there they can be cashed out to PayPal or any number of registered debit cards instantly.
The crypto casino pioneers noted that change is still in the wind with alternative gambling currencies stating, new needs are already emerging. For instance, using NFTs to gamify the player experience and build a community of like-minded people around the online casinos.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: St. Louis Blues Will Try to Outrun Avalanche in Second… – Online Gambling
Posted: at 7:32 pm
The Colorado Avalanche rolled over the Nashville Predators in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, sweeping their overmatched opponents in four games. They expect to face more resistance in the second round, as theyll battle the St. Louis Blues starting on Tuesday night.
The Avalanche open as a -400 favorite over the Blues (+300) to win the series at DraftKings Sportsbook.
That makes Colorado by far the biggest favorite in the second round of the playoffs. The Avalanche also stand as the top choice to win the Stanley Cup this year at a very tight +190.
Colorado has earned that level of respect. The Avalanche topped the Western Conference with 119 points before blasting the Predators in their first-round series. Still, the Blues represent a much more dangerous opponent than Nashville did.
For one, the Blues finished just 10 points behind Colorado in the Central Division. St. Louis went 14-4-2 over its final 20 regular-season games, showing the team might be hitting its stride at just the right time. The Blues advanced by beating the Minnesota Wild in six games in their first-round series.
Both sides remember that the Avalanche swept the Blues in the first round of the playoffs last year, though neither team expects the same result in 2022.
I think were a better team than last year for sure, Blues captain Ryan OReilly told reporters. Its going to be a very tough challenge for us. They are one of, if not, the best teams in the league this year.
The Avalanche have big expectations this season, but theyre not about to overlook the Blues.
They are a different team this year and we are a different team this year, Colorado defenseman Devon Toews told reporters. So, you cant look into last year too much because that is in the past. We are focused on the present and playing the St. Louis team this year and they are a potent, highly potent offensive team that we have to be ready for.
Colorado will get a boost in net, as starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper will be ready to play in Game 1 against the Blues. Kuemper suffered an eye injury in Game 3 of the series against Nashville after Predators forward Ryan Johansen accidentally stuck his stick inside Kuempers mask.
It happened so quickly, Kuemper said of the incident. Obviously, pretty scary when your eyes are involved but, you know, I got pretty lucky that it wasnt worse. I think just bad luck.
No matter whos in goal, the Blues will face a difficult challenge every night against the Avalanche. Colorado comes into Game 1 as a -235 pick to win, and will likely be the favorite in every game in the series.
Theyre a great team, Colorado, we all know that, Blues coach Craig Berube told reporters. Youre going to have to do a lot of things right and youre going to have to be real disciplined and stay out of the penalty box against them.

SpaceX might be back on target with Starship in Texas – EarthSky
Posted: at 7:30 pm
Parts of the Starship Heavy Lift Vehicle stand waiting at the SpaceX Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. Expansion plans for the site have been frustrated by delayed approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. But that approval could come soon enough to allow a Starship test later this month. Image via Wikipedia.SpaceX Starship ready to fly in May?
An optimistic tweet in March from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressing hope the company can fly the Starship Heavy Lift Vehicle into orbit as soon as this month might have been based on more than just wishful thinking. Musks declaration coincided with the FAA receiving a favorable environmental report on SpaceXs plans to expand the Starbase launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
The tweet, which Musk posted March 21, 2022, described the extreme power of the companys new generation of rocket motors and announced enough units were completed to send Starship on a test flight out of Earths atmosphere:
Musks announcement came three weeks after the U.S. Department of the Interiors Fish and Wildlife Service which conducted a detailed 141-page environmental review of SpaceXs plans to expand launches in Texas sent the document to the FAA for review. News that the draft BCO (Biological and Conference Opinion) was in the FAAs hands came via an exclusive report from the broadcast network CNBC, which obtained it through a Freedom of Information Act request.
The report deals mainly with a group of endangered species living on the Starbase property and in the coastal wetlands surrounding it. The area is home to two species of endangered wildcats, the ocelot and the jaguarundi; as well as the northern Aplomado falcon; a pair of shorebirds, the piping plover and the red knot; and four species of sea turtles, the Kemps ridley, loggerhead, hawksbill, green and leatherback.
The Kemps ridley is the worlds rarest and most endangered sea turtle. Yet, risk to the Kemps ridley and other endangered species in the area can be mitigated by simple actions if expansion plans are approved, the report said. According to the Fish and Games cover letter for the BCO:
In the accompanying BCO, the Service determined that the action, as proposed, is not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of the species listed above. The action area encompasses a relative small portion of the rangewide habitat of each of the species addressed in this opinion and small portion of each species population.
Actions to lessen impacts on the at-risk species includes SpaceX-funded conservation of similar habitat elsewhere, fewer lights and less noise, monitoring how the species react to the upcoming changes and making sure anomalies in the form of crashed spacecraft and the resulting debris removal disturb the local wildlife as little as possible.
The species with the most to lose as SpaceX reaches for the moon and Mars is the piping plover. From the BCO:
The proposed action will result in the direct loss of 446.27 acres of piping plover habitat and critical habitat from construction and operation and the corresponding conversion of wind tidal flats. The proposed action will also result in an impact to 903.67 acres of occupied piping plover habitat and critical habitat in Critical Habitat Units TX-1.
The red knot also stands to see a large portion of its local habitat impacted by the proposed expansion. However, the 446.27 acres of red knot habitat that will be affected should be offset by Fish and Games plan to designate more than 680,000 acres elsewhere as critical habitat for the bird. The BCO describes a similar offset to protect the piper plover, which will see just 0.4 percent of its total habitat affected by SpaceXs plans.
Perhaps most concerning is the reports prediction of the impact to the extremely endangered Kemps ridley sea turtle, which could see the death of up to eight adults annually and the loss of three nests, along with as many as 330 hatchlings and eggs.
Either the FAA or the Fish and Game Service could initiate a new environmental review of the Starbase site at Boca Chica if certain conditions arise, chief among them being the death of too many individual animals from the various species listed in the BCO.
A renewed environmental review could also be started if new negative effects on the at-risk animals are discovered, if new species are discovered to be affected by SpaceXs operations or if the scope of review is modified in the future.
Should the number of endangered animals killed or harmed known as the take becomes too large, the controlling agencies will bring things to a halt. From the BCO:
In instances where the amount or extent of incidental take is exceeded, any operations causing such take must cease pending reinitiation.
Finally, the BCO could be the final biological report needed for SpaceX to fully begin upgrades at Starbase. From the BCOs closing pages:
If the Service determines there have been no significant changes in the action as planned or in the information used during the conference, the Service will confirm the conference opinion as the biological opinion for the project and no further section 7 consultation will be necessary.
Bottom line: FAA environmental approval for expansion of SpaceXs Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, could allow a test flight this month.

Tesla (TSLA) - Get Tesla Inc Reportis the world leader in the lucrative electric vehicle market.
And the Austin, Texas-based company is keen to keep its crown, which is coveted by the likes of Volkswagen (VWAGY) - Get Volkswagen AG Report, Ford (F) - Get Ford Motor Company Report, General Motors (GM) - Get General Motors Company Report, Mercedes-Benz (DDAIF) , BMW (BMW.DE) and the rest of the automotive industry.
If its rivals are doubling down on projects, in particular by adding new models to their vehicle portfolios, Tesla is focusing on other points because the roadmap for the next Tesla models is indeed known: this list includes the very futuristic Cybertruck, a new Roadster and the Tesla Semi whose production should start in 2023. Tesla is also working on its robotaxi fleet which will be based on a new and futuristic vehicle from 2024.
Elon Musk's group wants to focus on increasing its volumes of production and delivery. Tesla also wants to secure its raw materials supplies at a time when supply chains are being disrupted.
The vehicle manufacturer, for example, recently opened its first European factory near Berlin to serve the Old Continent. Tesla has also been producing vehicles in Austin since April, its second U.S. factory after Fremont in California. In total, the group has four vehicle production sites Austin, Fremont, Berlin and Shanghai which should allow it in the short term to be able to produce at least 1.5 million vehicles in 2022.
But the company, which wants to be able to produce some 20 million vehicles annually in the coming years, plans to build new factories. Musk promised on the first-quarter earnings conference call that he will announce the location of the next manufacturing sites by the end of 2022.
One of those sites could be in Indonesia. Indeed, the Indonesian president Joko Widodo has just paid a visit to Musk in Texas.
The two men visited the production site of SpaceX, Musk's company that manufactures the rockets in Boca Chica on May 14. During this visit, the Indonesian president invited the serial entrepreneur to visit the Southeast Asian country which is rich in natural resources.
"Hopefully in November, thank you for the invitation," Musk said according to a statement from Widodo's office.
In a tweet, Widodo says he discussed technology and innovation with the richest man in the world.
Scroll to Continue
"Arriving at the Stargate Space X Building, Boca Chica, United States, this afternoon, I immediately met the host, @ElonMusk We talk about technology and innovation," the Indonesian president posted on May 14, according to a translation of his message by TheStreet.
"It was an honor to meet at Starbase and discuss exciting future projects!" Musk commented on May 16 without elaborating further on the plans.
It is interesting to note that this is the second visit of an Indonesian delegation to Austin in less than a month. This suggests that discussions between Musk and Indonesia are well advanced.
Tesla and Indonesia have reportedly been in talks since at least 2020 over whether the EV maker could invest in nickel in the country and to build a full battery factory.
Indonesia is indeed a major producer of nickel, and the government is working to expand mining and refining. The country has imposed a ban on the export of nickel in an attempt to force companies to settle there in order to open sites to create jobs. Indonesia signed a $9.8 billion agreement with the South Korean group LG to produce lithium batteries, intended for electric vehicles. Lithium batteries require nickel.
But these ambitions do ecological damage, militants and activists say.
For example, fishermen in the Obi Islands, Indonesia, blame nickel mining and smelting industries for the scarcity of fish in their traditional fishing grounds.
According to researchers, the pollution has turned coastal waters into a "mud puddle" due to high levels of heavy-metal contamination.
An investment deal in Indonesian nickel could allow Tesla to further secure its supply of this important metal. Nickel is used to make stainless steel and the batteries, which are the heart of an EV because they determine a vehicle's range and play a key role in its performance and security.
Besides Tesla, Indonesia could also become the location of a new SpaceX site. According to the BBC, the country has offered up one of its islands in West Papua as a potential launch site for Space X project - which aims to put humans on the moon.
If there were agreements between Indonesia and Tesla and SpaceX, they could be signed in November because the country will hold a B20 summit with business leadersin mid-November ahead of the G20.

Most People With Hypermutated Genome Obtain Excess Mutations from Father, Study Finds – GenomeWeb
Posted: at 7:29 pm
NEW YORK While the human germline appears to be relatively impervious to acquiring many mutations, some genetic vulnerabilities or paternal exposure to chemotherapy can prompt pronounced de novo mutations, new research has found.
"Our results suggest that the germline is well protected from mutagenic effects, hypermutation is rare, the number of excess mutations is relatively modest, and most individuals with a hypermutated genome will not have a genetic disease," senior author Matthew Hurles, a researcher at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, and his colleagues wrote in Nature on Wednesday.
Following prior studies in mice with specific DNA repair mutations or mutagenic exposures, the team set out to search for signs of hypermutation in the human germline, where far less is known about individuals at the high end of the germline mutation spectrum.
Using exome or whole-genome sequence data for nearly 21,900 parent-child sets from the 100,000 Genomes Project or the Deciphering Developmental Disorders project including families with children suspected of having rare genetic conditions the researchers found a dozen participants who had up to seven times as many de novo single-base mutations in their germline than the median of other individuals.
In nine of the 12 individuals, the team traced the hypermutation back to their fathers. In some families, individuals carried damaging alterations affecting DNA repair genes, while others had germline mutation signatures linked to platinum-based chemotherapy, including children born to fathers who went through cancer treatment prior to conceiving children.
When the investigators explored the latter results further using data for dozens of parents from the 100,000 Genomes Project who had a history of cancer treatment, they found germline hypermutation in children born to two of 27 fathers treated for cancer. They also detected a nominal increase in de novo single-nucleotide changes in children born to mothers with a cancer treatment history, though the women also tended to be older than unaffected mothers when their children were born.
Among other implications, the results suggest that there may be a benefit for male cancer patients to preserve sperm prior to chemotherapy treatment, particularly for men who wish to have children in the future. At the moment, measures are typically offered to protect against chemotherapy-related infertility.
"Clinically, patients receiving chemotherapy who might want to go on to have children in the future are often offered the opportunity to freeze sperm prior to treatment as part of standard of care in the UK," Hurles explained in an email, adding that "it is not just cancer patients that receive mutagenic chemotherapies; these drugs are also given for non-cancer conditions, for example for immune suppression in some auto-immune disorders."
Although the evidence available so far suggests that the germline "generally appears to be well protected from large increases in mutation rate," the authors wrote, Hurles and his colleagues called for additional studies that include individuals exposed to a broader set of potential mutagens, and their family members, to find more modest germline mutation signatures and ties between genes and other environment factors.
"I anticipate that the publication of our study will trigger a range of future studies looking into the germline effects of a range of mutagens, including many chemotherapies," Hurles wrote. "I also think that more studies will identify genetic causes of hypermutation, and through these studies, we will learn more about the differences between the soma and the germline in terms of how mutations are minimized."

Horrifying Discovery: Scientists Find That DNA Mutations Are More Common Than Previously Thought – SciTechDaily
Posted: at 7:29 pm
Researchers at EMBL Heidelberg found that inversions in the human genome are more common than previously thought, which impacts our understanding of certain genetic diseases.
Our DNA serves as a blueprint for the cellular machinery that allows cells, organs, and even whole organisms to work. However, mutations in our DNA can cause genetic illnesses. Point mutations at a single site, as well as deletions, duplications, and inversions, are examples of such DNA mutations.
Inversion refers to a piece of DNA inverting its orientation in the genome. Because inversions are more difficult to analyze than other forms of mutations, they are poorly understood. Scientists from EMBL Heidelberg, working with colleagues from the University of Washington in the United States and Heinrich Heine University Dsseldorf in Germany, have determined that inversions are one of the most common mutational processes in humans.
The researchers uncovered how inversions are formed and investigated in detail a set of 40 inversions that form recurrently in the genome, where the DNA sequence flips back and forth. These flip-flopping inversions typically lie in regions linked to the development of certain human diseases called genomic disorders.
We found that inversions form at a much higher rate than previously thought. In humans, at least 0.6% of the genome repeatedly changes direction, making inversion one of the fastest mutational processes in humans, said Jan Korbel, EMBL Senior Scientist and Head of Data Science. At these sites, the genome is not stable the direction of the DNA code continues to switch back and forth.
These unstable areas are home to the many essential human genes. Scientific studies of long-distance gene regulation or epigenetics must now take into account this flipping behavior of genomic regions.

Inversions are also relevant for the development of human diseases, such as developmental delays in children or neuropsychiatric disorders in adults. Despite their importance, these regions have been very difficult to study before because of their complexity. Showing that these inversions indeed flip-flop back and forth required a new set of computational methods, said Tobias Marschall, Director of the Institute of Medical Biometry and Bioinformatics and the Heinrich Heine University Dsseldorf. We can now provide human geneticists with a new tool to understand the origin of disease in their patients.
Evan Eichler, group leader at the University of Washington, said: We showed for the first time that inversions can be associated with rare genomic rearrangements found in pediatric autism, developmental delay, and epilepsy. The question now is why? We hypothesize that certain configurations at the flanks of the inversions either predispose or protect individuals and their offspring from disease-associated rearrangements. This could have a practical application in the clinic, where it could be used to identify families at risk for developing these disorders.

Excision BioTherapeutics
SAN FRANCISCO, May 17, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Excision BioTherapeutics Inc., a biotechnology company developing CRISPR-based therapies intended to cure viral infectious diseases, today announced that preclinical and bioinformatic data showing robust and specific editing of HIV proviral DNA with EBT-101 will be featured in an upcoming poster presentation at the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ASGCT) 25th Annual Meeting, which is taking place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
EBT-101 is a unique, clinical-stage, in vivo CRISPR-based therapeutic designed to functionally cure HIV infections after a single intravenous infusion. It employs an adeno-associated virus (AAV) to deliver CRISPR-Cas9 and dual guide RNAs targeting three sites within the HIV genome. Bioinformatic analyses featured in the ASGCT poster compare these EBT-101 target sites against the human reference genome and show no identical matches. Moreover, there are no candidate off-target sites in the human reference genome with only one or two differences from EBT-101 target sites, and only a single candidate off-target site with three differences. These findings predict a lack of off-target activity for EBT-101, which has been confirmed by in vitro and in vivo studies showing HIV excision without unintended editing.
Taken together, the data being presented at ASGCT highlight the key advantages of Excisions novel therapeutic approach, said TJ Cradick, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer of Excision and lead author on the poster. By leveraging our in-silico design platform, we carefully crafted EBT-101 to minimize viral escape and off-target effects by cutting at three target sites that are specific to the HIV genome. Latent viral reservoirs were eradicated in in multiple disease models and resulted in functional cures in transgenic mice. We are now working to build on these results through the advancement of EBT-101s recently initiated Phase 1/2 clinical trial, and look forward to discussing our program with the scientific community at the upcoming ASGCT meeting.
Story continues
The ASGCT poster, entitled, EBT-101 achieves robust CRISPR-based editing of HIV proviral DNA without detectable off-target effects, will be presented today from 5:30 6:30 PM ET during the Hematologic and Immunologic Disease II poster session (Board No. TU-205). The poster was authored in collaboration with researchers from institutions including Temple University and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. A copy of the poster will be posted to the Excisions website following its presentation at the meeting.
