Steph Curry, Ja Morant play with similar ‘freedom and joy,’ Steve Kerr believes – NBC Sports Bay Area

Posted: May 9, 2022 at 8:52 pm

There aren't many players in the NBA more exciting to watch than Steph Curry and Ja Morant.

After an MVP-caliber 2021-22 season in which he took home the Most Improved Player award, the Grizzlies superstar has yet to cool down in the playoffs.

Scoring a career-high 47 points in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals against Curry and the Warriors at FedExForum on Tuesday, Morant further cemented his title as one of the most exciting players in the game of basketball.

On Friday, Warriors coach Steve Kerr met with the media after practice and was asked about the joy that Morant plays with on the court and how it's similar to that of Curry.

"I love watching Ja play, more than I love coaching against him," Kerr told reporters. "He's a brilliant player but he plays with freedom and joy and you can see how much he loves the game. He's fantastic, I think it's infectious with his teammates, with the crowd. Very similar dynamic to Steph. They're obviously very different players but that joy and freedom you see with Steph is there with Ja as well."

Both Games 1 and 2 between the Warriors and Grizzlies have been nothing short of box office entertainment. Between the scoring, defense, ejections, chirping and overall dramatics, the two teams have put on quite the show.

Of course, when headlined by two of the game's most exciting players, how could it not be must-see T.V.?

Initiative freedom for Ocalan decries the ban decision against him – ANHA | HAWARNEWS | English – ANHA

Posted: at 8:52 pm

On Monday, the Syrian Initiative for the Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan issued a written statement in which it called on the Committee against Torture to lift this "unfair and dictatorial" decision against leader Ocalan.

The initiative said: "The modern Turkish state, since its inception until this day has been built on the basis of one colour, one flag, one nationalism, and one language".

That is why the war broke out against all cultures and components in the region, and caused genocides against the ancient and authentic peoples, such as: (Kurds, Armenians, Assyrians, Syriacs, Greece, Bulgarians, Circassians, Laz...).

It added: " As a result of Turkey's policies of extermination and smelting, although it achieved some successes, it did not solve its problems rather it plunged Turkey into a state of permanent conflicts and a suffocating crisis for hundred years ".

The initiative added: " This ban contradicts with decisions and recommendations of the European Union's Committee of Ministers in reviewing and amending exceptional laws against the leader and symbol, Abdullah Ocalan, and before that the decision of the Committee against Torture (CPT).

The Turkish court's decision will further escalate Turkish problems. (political, social and economic) exponentially, and this proves that the escalation and culmination of the struggle in all arenas is the only way to remove the fascist AKP, MHP from power.

At the conclusion, the Syrian Initiative for Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan called on international humanitarian organizations, human rights organizations and CPT to remove this "unjust and dictatorial" decision against leader.

Amrut Biodiversity Park on banks of Yamuna to trace freedom struggle – Hindustan Times

Posted: at 8:52 pm

As India celebrates 75 years of Independence, Delhiites will get a glimpse of the freedom struggle from the 1857 mutiny to the Dandi March through plant sculptures at a biodiversity park being developed by the Delhi Development Authority on the Yamuna riverbank near the Commonwealth Games village.

The Lucknow-based National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI) will develop the landscape by restoring local ecology. It will also maintain the Amrut Biodiversity Park spread over 108 hectares on either side of the river.

We have signed a memorandum of understanding with CSIR-NBRI to take up the greening activity at the Amrut Biodiversity Park, said Rajeev Kumar Tiwari, principal commissioner, DDA. The plan is to highlight important events in Indias freedom struggle as we complete 75 years of Independence.

There will be five dedicated tracks on 90 hectares of land on the eastern bank that will depict an important historical event each. The landowning agency and CSIR-NBRI have decided on five historical events 1857 Mutiny, Santhal Rebellion, Champaran Satyagraha, Dandi March and the struggle by Azad Hind Fauj led by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. These will be represented through plant sculptures and appropriate vegetation.

Amrut Biodiversity Park will have a few tracks depicting some important events related to Indias freedom struggle, said Saroj K Barik, director of CSIR-NBRI. The detailed plans are being worked out.

The agreement with CSIR-NIBRI was signed in April, Tiwari said, adding that 75 varieties of species will be planted on the floodplain. The institute will take two years to complete the work. The institute will maintain the biodiversity park for five years after the work is complete (till 2029), said Tiwari.

Four tier forest

The biodiversity park will be spread on either side of the Yanuma river. While 90 hectares is located on the eastern side, 18 hectares is located on the western bank, close to the New India Garden, which is being developed by the Central Public Works Department as part of the Central Vista redevelopment project.

The plan is to develop a four-tier forest with varieties of grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees, Tiwari said.

All plantation activities at the park will be undertaken as per the National Green Tribunals guidelines, Barik said. Only those plants which are part of the vegetation of the Yamuna catchment will be used, he said

We will also be restoring the Yamuna floodplain ecosystems following appropriate ecological principles, Barik said. The other objective of our work will be to develop the park in such a way that people get a glimpse of the rich biodiversity of our country. The park will also provide its recreation ecosystem service to the general public.

While CSIR-NBRI is finalising details of the work, DDA is developing unpaved walkways and cycle tracks spread over 11km, nature walks along the river, public toilets, etc., which will be completed by the end of June.

The biodiversity park will also have a butterfly garden, scared groves and a nursery.

On the eastern bank, a system of wetlands along the unpaved pathways and cycle tracks interspersed with floodplain forests and grasslands is being developed to restore the ecology of the Yamuna floodplains, a DDA official said.

These wetlands will act as natural sponges for the floodplains and help in augmenting the water holding capacity of the area, he said on condition of anonymity. The aim is to intercept the receding water so that water is retained for a longer duration of time.

The portion of the park on the western bank is close to the rivers edge and within 300 metres of the green buffer area. A variety of native trees and riverine grasses to facilitate the ecology of the river will be planted with nature trails to connect with the river, the DDA official said.

Green activists cry foul

Environment activists, however, said that the Yamuna floodplain is not meant for ornamental landscape work.

The ornamental landscape work is easy to make, but difficult to maintain. But the big question is: why do we need this on the Yamuna floodplains? The floodplains require the natural biodiversity of Yamuna, said Manoj Misra, convener of Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan. After the Yamuna monitoring committee was disbanded, there is no independent mechanism in place to check development activities on the floodplain.

There is enough space available in the rest of the city where these plant sculptures can be developed, said Diwan Singh, an environmental activist. The DDA should focus on restoring the ecology of the floodplain rather than such development.

Opinion: More freedom or more death: A pandemic quandary we have yet to solve – The Globe and Mail

Posted: at 8:52 pm

How much freedom should we be willing to give up in order to prevent many people from dying?

Its been more than two years since that ceased to be an airy debate-club hypothetical, and turned into a central policy question of the pandemic age. There is still no widely agreed-upon, unambiguous answer and in many places, there remains a lethal fear of confronting it.

In recent days, however, weve witnessed two milestones in the history of this question, each leading to very different insights.

The first was in New Zealand where, for the first time in two years, people from abroad are now allowed to visit. That follows the February announcement that citizens could return to their country without a two-week military-guarded hotel quarantine (though proof of vaccination is still required, sensibly). It was an easy decision to make, because 95 per cent of New Zealands vaccine-eligible population are now fully vaccinated, thus making the disease more of an inconvenience than a death threat for most.

The informed consensus is that these infringements on freedom of travel were entirely worth it, because they prevented an estimated 10,000 COVID-19 deaths from taking place in a country of five million, and because they gave New Zealanders freedoms, during that deadly year before vaccination, that most of the rest of the world could only dream of.

New Zealand managed to keep itself all but coronavirus-free during that crucial year, and thus has recorded the lowest death rate among countries with accurate measurements. That allowed daily life to continue more or less as normal during most periods (much as Atlantic Canadians experienced during its travel-bubble months), along with unprecedented economic growth while the rest of the world slumped.

The second milestone was in Shanghai, where about half of the citys 25 million people were recently allowed to go outside for the first time in weeks, and about four million were allowed to leave their neighbourhoods, in a slight easing of the draconian COVID zero policies enforced in response to a modest Omicron-variant outbreak.

Most of the pandemics so-called lockdowns, such as those experienced in Northern Italy or New York City in 2020 when their hospitals were overwhelmed, were mere stay-at-home requests. Shanghai authorities, who faced no such catastrophe, have literally locked citizens into their apartment buildings, sometimes even constructing fences around complexes.

Unlike in New Zealand, this was not a sacrifice of some external freedoms in exchange for greater internal freedoms than one might otherwise experience during a plague. It was a total loss of the most rudimentary freedoms, in exchange for nothing.

And unlike in New Zealand, it was not a modest loss of freedoms in order to prevent a large loss of life. Although Chinas two available vaccines have been found considerably less effective in reducing serious illness and death than the mRNA vaccines used elsewhere, there is no indication that Chinas Omicron outbreak would have been particularly deadly without the restrictions (even after the lockdowns eased, numbers of deaths and hospitalizations there have been negligible at best).

In fact, to judge by the numerous reports coming from Shanghai of malnourishment-related deaths, abandonment of vulnerable people, and neglect of elders during these weeks, it seems that the lockdown has killed more people than it might have saved from the disease.

When the pandemic was at its most terrifying peak in 2020, many commentators suggested that the worlds democracies were at a disadvantage, because only dictatorships such as China could quickly and easily respond to medical data and impose the strict controls necessary to keep the disease from killing millions.

After more than six million unnecessary deaths around the world, the flaw in that logic is more visible. Perhaps authoritarian countries can crack down on their citizens more easily, or at least in more painful ways but its turned out that theyre not adept at tying policies to data. Single-party states such as China, and authoritarian-leaning democracies such as India, have used the pandemic as cover to brutalize and sometimes starve the most vulnerable.

The next time a worldwide disease strikes, we may not wish to be the United States, which suffered a staggering number of unnecessary deaths (a death rate more than three times higher than Canadas, and 23 times higher than New Zealands) in the name of symbolic freedom from basic hygiene principles. Indeed, the U.S. still has a vaccination rate that is far too low to prevent deadly outbreaks. Nor would we want to be Shanghai a place with neither freedom nor safety. But we may at least have a better idea where the ideal balance lies, having tested both extremes. And that place looks a lot like the South Pacific.

Books to read: ‘The Mental Game of Poker’ for sports betting – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 8:48 pm

Before I came into the sports betting world, I lived, breathed and ate poker. For years, I both played and dealt while working in poker media living in Las Vegas. Nearly everyone in my life was in poker. I woke up thinking about poker and went to bed thinking about poker.

I often reference how the game has shaped the way I live and how the things I learned playing no-limit hold'em have crossed over into what I do now in sports betting. I never just played; I prepped by reviewing hands with other players, studied with a coach and read books that were beneficial about both the math behind the game and the mindset.

Some of these books have stood the test of time, but not all of them focused on poker. Some were written on sports psychology, others about finance, but all have helped with my current role as an analyst. Its all related golf, finance, sports, trading, gaming, etc. because its all about the psychology of doing the act in which you train for.

Id like to share some of those books with you and perhaps they can be just as useful in your life taking concepts learned and applying them to real-world situations.

I'm starting first with "The Mental Game of Poker,"written by Jared Tendler. Tendler is a mental game coach that has worked with PGA and LPGA players, high-stakes poker players, along with other professionals. First of all, the cover alone speaks volumes for how it could be used for other aspects of life with words like "entitlement," "motivation" and "confidence" slapped right there to grab your attention. Here are some concepts I found beneficial that have helped with sports betting.

Can specific books help you become a smarter sports bettor? (Fethi Belaid/AFP via Getty Images)

Theres a sentence written in the book when Tendler talks about the Adult Learning Model, which is about the learning process. What really grabbed my attention was, you can only work on parts of your game at one time.

Hes so right. When you are either new to sports betting or even an experienced bettor, you could easily get overwhelmed with trying to do it all. Instead, focus on one sport at a time. You see content creators and accounts on Gambling Twitter that talk about MLB, NBA, USFL, KBO, horse racing, WTA, PGA, props, and whatever other sport is on that day. Theyre likely not winning. Unless you are using a model, heck even if you are, its just entirely too much information to consume.

Story continues

If youre starting out, focus on one sport that you know absolutely the most about, the one that you can crush at bar trivia. Then get really good at analyzing that sport.

Even if youre a seasoned bettor, then you know which sports and which wager types you excel in. Narrow down your focus to less than a handful of sports. For me, its football, ATP tennis, and PGA. At least for me, the more I try to add, my brain gets really foggy. Its like any skill, you can be good at a lot of things or you can put your effort in a few and become great.

How I use this concept outside of betting: same rule applies. Life can be a full bag. People have medical things, family things, work things, and it can just all fill up too quickly. Focus on one thing at a time. Have a list, mark each thing one by one. It will help spread out the burden.

Theres an entire chapter on tilt. If youve played poker, you know tilt well. If you ordered food to go, got home to see they gave you regular fries instead of curly fries, then you know tilt. What this chapter helped with was recognizing that there are different types of tilt. In fact, Tendler shares seven of them. The one I identify with most is, hate-losing tilt. Im a competitor at heart so like Tendler says, even if we know that variance can impact results, we still hate losing. Fine if we lose, but how we handle the inevitable losses is what matters most.

What this section helped me to understand is, aside from money, why winning is so important to me and then how to mentally navigate the variance. As it states, dont let variance beat you by forcing you to play badly, or in this case, bet incorrectly. What I mean by that is by forcing action, doubling down, or making a wager after a loss you wouldnt have otherwise.

Honestly, there are so many great quotes to be used in this section. If you lost making profitable plays, losing is temporary as long as you keep playing well and improving. The same applies to stocks, playing golf, really anything and everything. Make correct decisions, then eventually the variance will swing back to your favor.

Oh, but you thought tilt only existed when losing? Tendler explains that there is also winners tilt. You go on a hot streak, suddenly you feel invisible, you gain that I cant lose mindset and then find yourself making mistakes, betting too many games, adding more parlays and incorrectly raising your bet sizing. Overconfidence is a thing too and with a boosted ego, mistakes can be made.

Losses are inevitable. The key is to trust the process (clich but true). Its not just confidence in betting, its having confidence in yourself in everyday situations whether at the gym, creating content or your city-wide softball league. Confidence runs through what we do in our day-to-day lives. For this, I reached out to the author himself. On the subject matter, Tendler said, the bottom line is that it's far too easy to have confidence be equal to results. Results are strong, confidence is high. Results are poor, confidence is low. That's the most common mistake I see.

One thing I preach is keeping track of every wager you make. Its one thing to know what your ROI (return on investment) is but its another to analyze why your wins were wins and why your losses were losses. Tendler explains, As a sports bettor, the luck factor in the short-term means that you're going to get a lot of false feedback. Great bets can lose and bad bets can win. The key to break out of this cycle is to clearly understand how you define quality bets and quality decision-making. Then you base your confidence on your performance, not the results. Do that, and your confidence in general will never get too high or too low.

So much this! Its about the quality of actions. Ive been in a slump as of late so I asked Tendler how I can get my groove back. His response was that it all starts with asking yourself, Did you like the bets when you made them? How strong was your mentality at that time?

I know I needed a betting break because at least one of these was a no, but if your response is an emphatic yes, with no doubts and strong mentality for all five, then chalk it up to bad luck," Tendler said. "Your confidence doesn't deserve to take a hit and you should keep firing. Streaks like this are part of the game and you don't want losses like this to change your decision-making process. You do want to throw good money chasing after bad money.

Love that final part. It reminds me of something Tom Dwan once said, You cant win if you fold.

Other concepts in the book that could be directly applied to sports betting: not trusting your gut, second-guessing, burnout, the absence of learning and the illusion of control.

Ive read this book multiple times over the last decade, including recently last month, and Ill likely read it again in the future. There are concepts that we know but it helps to be reminded or helps to expand further for a deeper understanding. If you want to improve your tilt, grow your confidence, increase your motivation and cope with variance, this is definitely one book I recommend. Theres a reason why its part of my video backdrop.

Bahamas police identify the 3 Americans found dead at Sandals resort – NPR

Three U.S. citizens died over the weekend at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort in Great Exuma, Bahamas. Officials are still working to determine the cause of death, but said there were no signs of trauma on the deceased.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force has released the names of three American tourists who died under mysterious circumstances at a resort last week.

Michael Phillips, 68, of Tennessee and his wife Robbie Phillips, 65, were found dead in a villa at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort in Great Exuma on Friday. In a separate villa at the same resort, Vincent Paul Chiarella, 64, of Florida was also found dead.

There were no signs of trauma found on any of the deceased, according to police, though both Michael and Robbie Phillips "showed signs of convulsions."

Chiarella's wife, Donnis, was also at the resort and fell ill. She was airlifted to a Miami hospital and was last listed in "serious condition," according to Royal Bahamas Police Commissioner Paul Rolle.

What caused the deaths of the Americans is not yet clear, Rolle said, though autopsies were scheduled for Monday.

"The pathologist has extracted samples from all the patients and our forensic scientists have collected those samples for examination," Rolle said at a press conference. "We are actively engaging a lab in Philadelphia ... to assist us with the expediting the toxicological examinations of all of these samples."

Once those examinations are done, the pathologist in the Bahamas will be able to determine the cause of death and resolve the mystery surrounding the sudden deaths, he said. Additionally, samples have been collected from rooms at the Sandals resort to test for contaminants that might be present.

Prior to their deaths, some of the guests sought treatment at a clinic on Thursday for symptoms of nausea and vomiting, Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville told Eyewitness News Bahamas. He said they were seen and then discharged themselves.

Multiple teams, including some environmental scientists, were brought in to ensure there is no public health issue, Darville said. When asked about the resort, Darville said the emergency medical team believes it is a safe environment.

"We feel that what we are seeing is an isolated case, associated in a particular area," Darville said. "We thought we might have to make a makeshift facility, mini hospital that's proving to be not the case."

Companies can soon start paying the Bahamas to store carbon in the ocean – Grist

Posted: at 8:48 pm

Seagrass beds and mangrove trees in the Bahamas crystal-clear waters may soon be drafted into the fight against climate change.

The Caribbean country plans to offer blue carbon credits this year as a way for companies internationally to offset their emissions, the countrys prime minister announced last week. The island nation will be one of the first to sell ocean-based credits, and hopes to use the proceeds to invest in climate resilience projects.

Coastal ecosystems, such as seagrass meadows and mangrove forests, are some of the worlds most powerful carbon sinks, storing three to five times more carbon per hectare than tropical forests. They do so mainly by storing dead and decaying plant matter in the ocean floor, as well as sequestering carbon by pulling it straight from the air and water. Last year, an international team of researchers found that these marine habitats already store up to 30 billion tons of carbon nearly as much as the world emitted in 2021 from fossil fuel burning alone.

The Bahamas is home to more than 1,600 square miles of mangrove forests and other marine ecosystems that serve as valuable carbon sinks at least $300 million worth, according to Prime Minister Philip Davis. But theyre threatened by damage from hurricanes and coastal development, issues that he said the revenues from the carbon credit sales would help address.

I want to see a Caribbean that is not dumped on any further, Davis said at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Conference in Miami, according to Bloomberg. We are a major carbon sink for the world, and we need to benefit from cleaning the Earths atmosphere.

Carbon offsets work in two ways: Companies can pay to preserve already-existing ecosystems, preventing new carbon from being released into the atmosphere. Or they can finance the rehabilitation of degraded or destroyed habitats, which then go on to absorb additional carbon dioxide. Both methods allow corporations and individuals buying credits to continue polluting, as long as their emissions are equal to the carbon being stored by the project they support the basis for claims to carbon neutrality. In theory, these methods can be an important tool to combat climate change, and conservationists are now promoting blue carbon projects as a way to preserve threatened marine habitats.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations major climate body, has promoted blue carbon as a way for nations to meet their obligations under the Paris Agreement, and countries like the United States, Australia, and Kenya have already begun including marine habitats in their carbon accounting. Corporations have also seen an opportunity in blue carbon; Apple and Gucci have both invested in projects that preserve mangrove forests in Central and South America.

But similar carbon offset programs targeting forests and grasslands have been plagued with accusations of fraud; developers have been caught inflating the amount of carbon sequestered by forests or preserving land that was already protected. And some ecosystems have been destroyed by wildfires even after they were claimed for credits.

Theyve also been criticized as a form of greenwashing, excusing companies and countries from the work of actually transitioning to carbon-free energy sources a possibility that some experts fear could be repeated with blue carbon credits.

These issues, however, havent slowed the rapid expansion of carbon markets, which are expected to be worth as much as $546 billion by 2050, according to BloombergNEF, a clean energy research firm.

You shouldnt let anybody convince you or say that this is the silver bullet to solve climate change, because its not. The opportunity is actually quite limited, Cath Lovelock, a coastal ecology researcher at the University of Queensland, Australia, told China Dialogue Ocean. And it might allow polluters to keep polluting. Its like: Watch my beautiful blue carbon project over here, while Im not doing anything about my emissions over there.

Daily life on the International Space Station: A Q&A with a space archaeologist | NOVA – PBS

Posted: at 8:47 pm

Soon after photos started arriving from the International Space Station (ISS), Justin Walsh spotted something unexpected: frosting. Tucked into a plastic bag hanging off the station wall, near a can opener and bottle of ketchup, were telltale red, yellow, and green tubes. Walsh was mystified. What does frosting imply? Baking, he said recently over Zoom. But baking in space is pretty much impossible.

He got his resolution when astronaut Kayla Barron posted on Instagram that shed made a birthday cake for a colleague. They did it by cutting the tops off of muffins and gluing them together with honey, then covering the whole thing with icing and frosting, Walsh says. To Walsh, an art historian and archaeologist at Chapman University, the frosting was physical proof of something less concrete: astronauts bond with one another. Cooking and eating is not only about sustenance; it's about social relations, he sayseven 250 miles above Earth.

He, fellow space archaeologist Alice Gorman, and their colleagues received the frosting photo as part of the Sampling Quadrangle Assemblages Research Experiment, known as SQuARE. The ISS, which is administered by multiple space agencies, is essentially a network of modules for cooking, sleeping, science research, and other uses thats slightly larger than a six-bedroom house. Between January and March, astronauts on board took daily photos of six carefully chosen sites around their temporary home first at the same time each day, then at random times. The project was an interstellar version of the archaeological technique known as quick testing, in which archaeologists divide a new site into a grid of one-meter squares and dig test pits that provide a basic sense of what they might find.

In SQuARE, those pits are one-square-meter areas marked off with tape, scattered across the American, European, and Japanese modules of the ISS in areas used for work, science experiments, cooking, and hygiene. The team will analyze the resulting photos in hopes of understanding how each area is used over time and, from there, identify opportunities to improve space habitat design.

NOVA talked with Walsh about the challenges of space archaeology and why astronauts eat so many tortillas.

Alissa Greenberg: Usually, archaeologists excavate sites because its the only way to learn about life in those placesall the people are long dead. But we can talk to these astronauts. Why not do that?

Justin Walsh: It's true that, for the most part, archaeologists do study the distant past. Contemporary archaeology developed starting in the 1970s. The first example of it was a project called the Tucson Garbage Project by a guy named William Rathje at the University of Arizona. He got the City of Tucson sanitation department to drop off samples of neighborhood garbage on a regular basis, and he and his graduate students went through it to understand the patterns of usage of different items.

What's really fascinating about it is that they then went and interviewed people from the neighborhood about their consumption habits. So first of all, he found that people were throwing out lots of meat that they weren't using. So he was able to show that people were being wasteful with this particular commodity. But then he went to talk to people about these things, and he found out some interesting facts. Such as when you ask people questions, the way sociologists and anthropologists often do, they are not necessarily really good at articulating the realities of their livesor they don't want to. Which is also perfectly fair and understandable! I would not blame them for that. But what it shows is that what archaeology can do is provide additional insights into human practices and that those insights don't have to be about the distant past.

So, you can say, Well why don't you just talk to the crew and ask? or Doesn't NASA document all that stuff? Okay, we can absolutely do that, but that doesn't always work wellespecially for astronauts, who are 100% good at staying on message and will not say anything to jeopardize their next flight to space. And as for the space agency, they don't do any forensic work on what's happened on the space station before. They're in the present and the futureand the past is gone. They're not thinking about what they can learn.

AG: Why do you find space culture so compelling?

JW: Because humans are doing things there in an environment that we are 100% not adapted for. We literally cannot survive. So, we have to come up with all these technologies that allow us to survive in that environment, living in microgravity. And on top of that, there's the other issues of confinement and isolation: the bad food, the distance from family and friends. How do they work together and live together?

One of the phrases that I like is that a crewed spacecraft is a microsociety in a miniworld. You have the transmission of culture and traditions"this is how we do things, this is how this is laid out being handed down almost from generation to generation. For example, on the ISS they have dinner together every Friday. Most of the time it's in the Russian service module; sometimes it's in the American service module. Or on ISS their food is carefully designed, and there are different kinds of traditions associated. Things like there's no bread, because crumbs are bad in space. If you inhale a crumb, that could really be a problem, so instead they use tortillas for everything. Tortillas don't make crumbs.

AG: Can you talk about this most recent study? Whats the goal here?

JW: We've been doing this study of historic photos that document life on the space station over 21 years. We've got this body of photographs, both published photographs from Flickr and also unpublished photographs that NASA has now given usthousands and thousands of photographs. We've been working for the last three years to develop machine learning techniques that would allow the automated tagging of people, places, and objects in the photos. But they were taken essentially randomly. They weren't taken at precise intervals. How do we even characterize what the potential problems might be with that? One way is by doing an actually systematic survey of the material culture of the space station over the short term. That's what SQuARE is.

In archaeology, we take soil thats all the same type, same color, same consistency, and different from what's above it and what's below it or what's adjacent to it, as a group that reflects a particular period of time. We take all of those items as relating to one another, and therefore they are separate from and need to be interpreted differently from whats above or below. So we're treating each photo that way, because it is a slice of time, separate from the next day or the previous day.

The fact that we're doing this one picture a day for each of six squares for 60 days, 360 images that were taken systematically at precisely defined locations, will allow us to better understand what the historic photos are all about. And likewise, what's happening in the historic photosbecause there's so many of them and such a variety of things going on in themwill help us to interpret what we're seeing in the systematically recorded images.

AG: What have you found so far?

JW: We thought that the two experimental areas that we selected probably were not going to show very much change over time because they're basically just racks with scientific equipment. In fact, we were asked, Are you sure you want to use those areas? Dont you want to see where more activity is happening? We had to say no because archaeology is not a treasure hunt. We want to actually see the full range. How would we be able to tell the difference between low activity and high activity if were only looking at high-activity areas?

It turns out that one of those areas is seeing hardly any change. But in one of the other areas, we actually have seen a lot of things moving around. Things are being stored there, like laptops and a video camera. It seems to be kind of a staging area for what's happening next door, a veggie experiment. So that's really interesting, because that shows that when things aren't happening in the location, it can be repurposed.

Another thing weve been seeing in the eating area is books. In one case there's been an actual physical book on the wall, just kind of stuck there for the time beingsomebody put it down. But we've also seen an iPad with an e-book that was on. So, in a leisure moment, when you're eating by yourself, maybe you read a book or a magazine.

The way it works right now is that there's this kind of plate hooked to an adjustable arm. And the plate has some Velcro on the front of it, so that the back of the iPad that has Velcro on it can be stuck to it. And that's fine, maybe that's a good enough solution. But now we have evidence of a different way in which the space is being used. And in future space habitat designs you might want to accommodate it in order to make a better experience. If nobody had evidence that this is how this is being done, we wouldn't even be able to think of solutions.

Another aspect of the photo studywe placed a preprint of this on SocArXivis we had all these images from Flickr, 8,000 of them, and helpfully NASA has captioned all of them. We were able to scrape them and peel out particular words: the names of the crew members and the locations. Just with those two pieces of data from each item, for the first time it's possible to map out where men and women are across the International Space Station by module.

And if we look at nationality by module, it does seem like there are some real results. In the Russian segment, unsurprisingly, Russians make up the majority of people. And unsurprisingly, in the U.S. segment Americans make up the majority of people who are in those modules. So this indicates that in what claims to be an international space station, there are national zones. That's not something anybody has ever been able to show data for. Again, anecdotally you might have expected that to be the case. But we're able to show the reality. And this is because of the way the ISS is managed. Those are official designations. Each agency decides what happens in its own module and what their own crew do. So as a result, you end up with inefficiencies.

AG: Youve mentioned the future design of space habitats. Do you know if people doing that are watching your project? What kind of questions are they hoping youll answer?

JW: The ISS is maybe the most expensive building project humans have ever undertaken. A staggering amount of money for one piece of architecture, and $3 billion or $4 billion on NASA alone to maintain it each year. I think that we're looking to be able to give more accurate and more precise descriptions of the functions of different areas and how that relates to what the originally designed and planned functions of those spaces are. It's really important to be able to understand whether people are using spaces the way they're intended. If they're not, how are they being used?

We have at the moment four different commercial organizations that are planning, designing, building their own space stations, partly funded by NASA. And NASA and the other space agencies in ISSexcept for the Russiansare currently already building a new space station that's going to go into orbit around the moon: Lunar Gateway. There are key problems that they're already focused on sorting out. But also, how do astronauts and designers create the conditions that mimic, or are as my colleague Alice says, are surrogates for, gravity? That is to say, handrails, bungee cords, Velcro, resealable bags. Where do we see Velcro building up over time? Those are areas where it might not have been foreseen, where it ended up that the crew realized that they were going to need more gravity. First of all, we have to identify those areas. And, second of all, then we have to understand why those areas are requiring gravity, because of the kinds of activities that are going on there. And then third, how do we anticipate that for future designs?

Those kinds of questions, the space station companies really want to know that. Even when they have astronauts on their staff or in their executive boardroom, they still realize that there's a difference between anecdotes and data. So the really amazing thing about this is that, as (terrible pun) out of this world as this project is, it's the rare archaeological project that can actually have concrete and practical implications for the future.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Correction: Due to a punctuation error, a previous version of this article indicated that the Russian space agency was building Lunar Gateway. It is actually a project of the four non-Russian ISS space agencies.
