Stories about economic degrowth help fight climate change and yield a host of other benefits – The Conversation
Posted: May 1, 2022 at 11:33 am
There is something unprecedented and important in the recent Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): degrowth. Two of the IPCCs working groups those focused on climate change impacts and on mitigation use the economic term to discuss policies that are key to reducing the impacts of climate change.
This is a profound inclusion. By pointing to degrowth, something Timothe Parrique, a social scientist and economist, refers to as an opportunity to recentre our economies on what really matters, the reports authors challenge the widely accepted story that endless economic growth an increase in the quantity of goods and services is essential to reducing poverty and improving the quality of life around the world.
Degrowth offers the world a new story, one that acknowledges the role economic growth has had in climate change and identifies alternatives.
Stories are foundational to how we understand who we are and the world in which we live, and we should think of economics as a story. As English professor and Indigenous writer Thomas King succinctly offers, The truth about stories is thats all we are.
Not only do the IPCC reports offer hope for mitigating climate change, they also afford hope for how we understand and celebrate the Earth.
In an analysis of the IPCCs Working Group II report, Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, released in February 2022, Parrique notes the mention of degrowth 15 times. He also points to the reports emphasis on other ways of living that are not based on economic growth, including buen vivir in South America, eco-swaraj in India and Ubuntu in South Africa. Each of these is an example of ways in which people are living more interconnectedly with each other and the Earth.

The IPCC Working Group III report, Mitigation of Climate Change, released in early April 2022, refers to degrowth five times and declares that prosperity and the Good Life are not immutably tied to economic growth.
These reports highlight the urgent reality of climate change: It is a devastating, fossil fuel-driven, anthropogenic global phenomenon and an inequity multiplier those with the least are affected the most gravely.
But the IPCC reports also highlight that if we are to address climate change, we must challenge the business-as-usual story of endless economic growth. Economic degrowth and examples of alternative communities welcome the possibility for a different kind of story one about the finite Earth as something other than a collection of resources. A story that allows for a re-imagining of who we are and our relationship with the Earth.
There was a time not so long ago that all of our ancestors understood, and told stories about, the ways humans are interconnected with the Earth. They lived this interconnection. As Robin Wall Kimmerer points out in her book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, Each of us comes from people who were once Indigenous.
But stories of humans as interconnected with the Earth are antithetical and threatening to those whose businesses and industries are reliant on the Earth as a collection of natural resources and a dumping ground for waste. From anti-Indigenous racism to the demonization of Rachel Carson upon the publication of her book Silent Spring, there is a long history of violent suppression of those who share and celebrate our interconnection with the Earth.
This suppression made the story of the Earth-as-resource a necessary prelude to endless economic growth appear more palatable, logical and inevitable. But it is a story with an illogical premise: that endless growth can happen on a finite planet. In Prosperity Without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet, economist Tim Jackson writes, those who hope that [economic] growth will lead to a materialistic Utopia are destined for disappointment. We simply dont have the ecological capacity to fulfil this dream.
He adds that with continued pursuit of economic growth, by the end of the century we will face a hostile climate, depleted resources, the destruction of habitats, the decimation of species, food scarcities, mass migrations and almost inevitably war.
But the IPCCs unprecedented inclusion of degrowth in its recent reports offers a new way forward. Perhaps acknowledging ecological limits will lead us to the fulfilment of different kinds of dreams and the celebration of a return to stories about humans as interconnected with the Earth.
Some researchers, myself included, have interviewed people about their spiritual experiences in nature. These are experiences and stories that include wonder, awe, the sublime, mystery and connection with something larger than oneself, but are not attributed to a specific religion or faith. My findings echo those of psychology researchers Tristan Snell and Janette Simmonds who write, natural environments, and features within these settings, can act as triggers of mystical [or spiritual] experiences.
Read more: Rapidly increasing climate change poses a rising threat to mental health, says IPCC
Such findings may help to explain a 2017 report from the Pew Research Center that found that people identifying as spiritual but not religious increased to 27 per cent from 19 per cent between 2012 and 2017. As sociologists Todd Ferguson and Jeffrey Tamburello propose, When a person hikes in a forest to connect with the sacred, she or he may not feel the need to affiliate with a religious organization because her or his spiritual demands are met.
Seeing the Earth as a collection of ingredients for consumption is antithetical to seeing the Earth as interconnected and spiritual. Many Indigenous Peoples, engaged scholars like Rachel Carson, environmentalists, eco-spiritualists, visitors to forests, lakes and mountains, among others, have been sharing their interconnected and spiritual stories sometimes against great resistance. Now climate change and the IPCC are helping with such sharing by challenging economic growth-as-usual.
In The Age of Missing Information, Bill McKibben writes, Most cultures, historically, have put something else God or nature or some combination at the centre. But weve put them at the periphery. A consumer society doesnt need them to function, and it cant tolerate the limits they might impose; theres only need for people.
From flooding to fires to species extinctions, the Earth is letting us know that there are limits. And climate change is reminding us, with great force, that we are interconnected with this finite earth. As naturalist John Muir wrote in My First Summer in the Sierra, published 1911, When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.
Climate change is both a devastating reality and profound opportunity. We are the Earth and embracing that story provides desperately needed new paths to the future and spiritual opportunities for experiencing amazement.

Secondhand vaping: The latest vaping health risk – CNET
Posted: at 11:32 am
When vaping first gained popularity, it was marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, a recent surge in illnesses, hospitalizations -- and even deaths -- has shown that there may be much scarier health risks associated with e-cigarettes than we thought. Products like Juul are wildly addictive and popular among teens, leading to what some are calling an epidemic of nicotine use.
Lately, researchers have been discovering that it's not only those who use vaping products themselves who are harmed -- other people in the vicinity can be breathing in "secondhand" fumes, a phenomenon now dubbed "secondhand vaping."
Secondhand vaping is exactly what it sounds like: if you're near a person breathing out vapor from an e-cigarette, you generally breathe in the same air that they're exhaling and can inhale the same vapor.
When you breathe the same air as someone using an e-cigarette, you're "secondhand vaping."
And you don't have to be in super confined quarters with the vaper to still experience the negative side effects. A study from 2014 showed that indoor air quality was impaired when people in a ventilated room used e-cigarettes. Ultrafine particles can find their way from the vapor into the lungs of other people in the same space.
Another study from 2018 found that the vapor not only contains nicotine, but also heavy metals, aldehyde and glycerin, even though vaporizer companies try to paint these products as healthier in every way.
These chemicals contribute to the health risk posed by secondhand vaping. Both of these studies concluded that the pollutants emitted by vapor and the chemicals it contains can harm passive bystanders, including increased frequency of asthmatic reactions in bystanders. The vapor can also harm bystanders' lungs and contribute to lasting damage and disease.
E-cigarettes are becoming more and more of a teenage phenomenon.
With more teens than ever now vaping, it seems like the younger folks who are more at risk. A third of high-schoolers and middle-schoolers reported that they were exposed to vaping aerosol in 2018. The Surgeon General reported last year that e-cigarette use among young people qualifies as an epidemic. Plus,Phillip Morris and Juul are now being sued for deceptive marketing tactics designed to promote their products to minors.
Teenagers are typically much more impressionable to peer pressure than their older counterparts, so it's harder for many of them to remove themselves from social situations that pose a health risk. Personally, I was already so embarrassed by just being in middle school that I can't imagine speaking up if I saw someone using an e-cigarette.
Those with pre-existing lung or breathing conditions are also at a greater risk: If you have asthma or a related condition, the effects of secondhand vaping may be heightened. The aerosol in vapor can cause throat and respiratory irritation, so if you're already feeling a little sick or have a sore throat, you could feel much worse.
Fine, I'll be the buzzkill here. If you really want to avoid the negative health effects of secondhand vaping, you may just want to not hang out with your friends while they're using e-cigarettes. Or, if you're reading this and you are an e-cigarette user who's not ready to give it up yet, at least don't vape around other people (especially kids).
Stepping away from your friends while they vape can be hard, but doing so will protect your lungs.
Besides avoiding vapers while they partake, you can set ground rules for your own personal spaces. Tell people you would rather they not vape in your car, home or anywhere else that you have some sway.
If someone close to you, like a parent, caretaker or coworker, uses e-cigarettes, you can kindly ask them to stop while you're around. Frame it as a way to protect both your health and theirs, and hopefully they'll respect your wishes.

Was Johnny Depp’s Doorman Driving and Vaping While Giving Testimony in Trial? – Snopes.com
Posted: at 11:32 am
Johnny Depps former doorman, Alejandro Romero, was driving a car and vaping during his video testimony in the Depp v. Amber Heard defamation trial.
Romero could indeed be seen driving and vaping during video testimony shared in the April 2022 defamation trial though, to be clear, the video consisted of a deposition recorded in January 2021, and was not live.
An unusual moment took place during the fraught public defamation trial between actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, when Depps former doorman was seen vaping and driving a car during his testimony.
In a recorded deposition shown in the courtroom on April 27, 2022, Romero responded to questions about Heard and Depp who lived in a Los Angeles apartment building during the years 2015 and 2016 while vaping and driving at the same time. The testimony was recorded in January 2021.
Romero described the time Heard asked him to investigate a possible intruder at the Los Angeles apartment building, where he worked as a doorman. He said he believed the intruder was just their dog scratching at the door.
They were talking about someone trying to get into their unit, and in my head I was saying you really think someone is trying to get into your unit?, Romero said. Theres scratches four inches above the floor on your door. That was a dog trying to get into your unit. [] They were so afraid I actually went. They asked me to go inside the unit just to check room by room to make sure that no one was actually there.
He also expressed his frustration with the trial, saying he didnt want to deal with this any more.
As he spoke, he was vaping and driving. After the video of his deposition was over, Judge Penney Azcarate looked visibly bemused, and members of the jury were heard laughing through the recording. Azcarate was seen taking her glasses off and shaking her head.
Alright that was a first, Im sorry, she said after a pause.
Elaine Bredehoft, Heards lawyer, said, I will say your honour that was the most bizarre deposition
Azcarate then said, Yeah, OK, I just got to say Ive never seen that before. Ive seen a lot of things, but Ive never seen that.
The full deposition can be seen here:
Romeros deposition was part of a trial expected to last six weeks between the two formerly married actors that started on April 12, 2022, in Fairfax, Virginia. In 2019 Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard because of an op-ed she wrote about domestic abuse in 2018, in which she did not name him but described a timeline that coincided with their divorce. Depp, however, said the article irreparably damaged his career. The former couple has been caught up in a messy series of lawsuits and public accusations about domestic abuse since their divorce in 2016.

Young people join Truth Initiative to demand action on youth vaping nicotine as mental health issue – PR Newswire

Young activists rally to raise awareness by calling on Capitol Hill decision-makers in Washington, D.C. during Moment of Action for Mental Health
WASHINGTON, April 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ --Truth Initiative, the organization behind the highly effectivetruthyouth smoking, vaping and nicotine public education campaign, is gathering young people from across the country in Washington, D.C. today for a Moment of Action for Mental Health. The event, taking place on the National Mall, will call attention to the impact that vaping nicotine is having on youth mental health and demand decision-makers declare it a mental health issue.
The Moment of Action is part of truth's latest campaign, Breath of Stress Air,which busts the fantasy that vaping nicotine is a stress reliever and calls out the tobacco industry for promoting e-cigarettes and vaping as a way to deal with stress. When in fact, vaping nicotine can increase stress levels and amplify feelings of anxiety and depression.
As part of the Moment of Action, young activists including former e-cigarette users will be taking a symbolic live breath to call attention to the impact that nicotine use is having on youth mental health. Leading up to the Moment of Action, hundreds of thousands of young people showed their support for the effort by "taking breaths" at thetruth.com/mentalhealth2022. While in Washington, D.C., young people are also meeting with Members of Congress, members of the Biden Administration and Admiral Rachel Levine, the Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health and Human Services. They will elevate the discussion around vaping and mental health and call for it to be declared a public health crisis. As momentum builds, young people nationwide can text "ACTION" to 88709 to participate.
The Moment of Action comes on the heels of an advisory issued by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on the state of mental health among young people, in which he called youth mental health an "urgent public health crisis." At the same time, the latest 2021 National Youth Tobacco Surveyshows that youth vaping remains at epidemic levels with more than two million high school and middle school students using e-cigarettes. These colliding crises are especially troubling given the fact that nicotine can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depressionin addition to the physical health risks associated with its use.
The Moment of Action for Mental Health event in Washington, D.C. will feature more than a dozen young activists including both former vapers and non-vapers from Alabama, Alaska, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Tennessee and other states who are leading education and awareness efforts about the dangers of vaping nicotine among youth in their communities.
"As a former vaper who has dealt with mental health repercussions amplified by nicotine, I am passionate about sharing my experiences in hopes it can change views on vaping and help others looking to quit," said Sam, age 20. "I'm excited to be joining in the Moment of Action and hope it will inspire others to learn more about the connection between nicotine and mental health."
"Now more than ever, it is an important time to address how nicotine affects my generation's mental health," said Brooklyn, age 22.
truth's proven-effective campaigns
The Moment of Action for Mental Health continues truth's latest Breath of Stress Aircampaign that debunked the marketing of e-cigarettes as stress relievers. It called out the tobacco industry for selling vaping as a way to deal with stress, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. A Truth Initiative survey found that 93% of e-cigarette users said vaping made them feel more stressed, depressed, or anxious, while 90% of those who quit said they felt less stressed, anxious, or depressed.
The Breath of Stress Air campaignbuilds on a larger truth effort It's Messing with Our Heads: Depression Stickwhich first exposed the connection between vaping nicotine and youth mental health. It seeks to de-normalize youth vaping by debunking the myth that vaping nicotine can help reduce stress, and to normalize quitting through a free and first-of-its-kind quit vaping text message program, This is Quitting from truth.
Resources to help those looking to quit
Connecting young people with resources is a key component of the truth campaign. This is Quitting fromtruthis a first-of-its-kind text message quit vaping program that is helping more than 440,000 young people on their journey to quit. The program is free and anonymous. Young people can enroll by texting "DITCHVAPE" to88709to get help. Arandomized clinical trialfound that This is Quitting increased quit rates among young adults aged 18-24 by nearly 40% compared to a control group.
Breathing exercises have been proven to help with nicotine cravings that cause stress and anxiety. For this reason, truth has launched a partnership with Breathwrk through This is Quitting. Program users can access six months of free membership to Breathwrk Pro including access to custom breaths to help on their quit journey by texting "BREATHE" to 88709.

Concerns raised over vaping product regulation proposals in Scotland – Convenience Store
Posted: at 11:32 am
The ACS (the Association of Convenience Stores) has raised concerns about proposals from the Scottish Government surrounding the tightening of rules on the advertising and promotion of vaping products, including restrictions on in-store displays.
The Scottish Government consulted on new regulations on the advertising and promotion of vaping products to ensure they are only used as an aid to stop smoking and prevent young people and adult non-smokers from the uptake of these products.
The consultation proposals would have a direct impact on convenience retailers by introducing restrictions on:
In its submission, ACS highlighted the lack of clarity in the proposals and urges the Scottish Government to provide clearer definitions of in-store promotional displays, leaflets, flyers and moving video apparatuses, if they are to proceed with new regulations.
ACS chief executive James Lowman said: We do not support proposals to ban in-store displays or use of leaflets and flyers that promote e-cigarettes. These types of interventions have a disproportionate impact on local shops that have limited space to display products meaning they would incur significant financial cost to refit stores.
Banning in-store promotions and other advertising mechanisms would also reduce access to vaping products, which are a growing category for retailers and are widely considered to be an important smoking cessation tool. The Scottish Government should instead focusing resource on enforcement activity to remove illegal e-cigarette products from the market.

Much Needed Tobacco Harm Reduction Approaches in Malaysia – Vaping Post
Posted: at 11:32 am
80% of Malaysians are in favour of having the local vape industry regulated by authorities.
Following his attendance at the recent virtual Global Tobacco & Nicotine Forum (GTNF) 2021, Fi explained that Malaysia needs to look for innovative solutions to manage the local high smoking rates. This is where tobacco harm reduction (THR) can be particularly beneficial, as it would allow smokers to switch to less harmful alternatives in their journey to quit completely, he said.
A recent survey has indicated that 80% of Malaysians, are in favour of having the local vape industry regulated by authorities. Earlier in 2021, the Malaysian Vape Chamber of Commerce (MVCC) had called onto the Malaysian government to set in place appropriate regulations on nicotine-containing e-liquids. He said that amongst other things, this move would have a positive effect on the local economy by creating more jobs and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
The findings show that there are more than 3,300 businesses related directly to the vape industry, with a workforce of more than 15,000 workers, said the MVCC on launching its Malaysian Vaping Industry report.
MVCC president Syed Azaudin Syed Ahmad, said that the report findings show that the sector is a viable and growing industry in Malaysia, and that it has facilitated the growth of local entrepreneurs. In addition, the Malaysian vape industry currently has an established ecosystem comprising manufacturers, importers and retailers, and a growing distribution and logistics network, he said.
And a recent poll has indicated that the public is of the same opinion. Titled Malaysian Insights & Perspectives on Vape, the poll was commissioned by the Malaysian Vape Industry Advocacy (MVIA) and conducted by market research firm Green Zebras. The compiled responses indicated that 76% of the respondents agree that the Malaysian economy would benefit from regulating the products.
Moreover, 87% agreed on a vape tax and 74% think that the government could spend the collected revenue on areas of importance, such as education and the economy. Recent reports from local industry groups already confirmed that the vape industry has significant potential to contribute to the Malaysian economy with capabilities to create jobs, develop existing businesses and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) within the industry, and attract investments, said MVIA president Rizani Zakaria.
Meanwhile Malaysias health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has recently announced a banon the sales of cigarettes and safer nicotine alternative products to anyone born in 2005 or beyond. The plan was released at the 150th session of the World Health Organizations (WHO) executive board meeting where Jamaluddin said the hope is that the legislation is finalized this year and that it would bring about a generation endgame to smoking.
In response to the announcement countless international public health experts wrote to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob warning him that such a measure would eventually just create a large black marketand just fuel the illicit trade of the products.
In the letter, academics and tobacco harm reduction experts David Abrams, Clive Bates, Ray Niaura andDavid Sweanor, said that prohibitionist approaches may have unintended consequences. We hope the government will consider the limitations and likely unintended consequences of prohibition measures. We hope ministers will consider the alternative approach of risk-proportionate regulation based on MPOWER and tobacco harm reduction.

‘Stop Spreading Fake News: The Ghost Of Kyiv Is A Legend’, Ukrainian Military Says – The Aviationist
Posted: at 11:31 am
One of the images that circulated online supposedly depicting the "Ghost of Kyiv". (Ukrainian Air Force)
Hero of Ukraine Stepan Tarabalka is NOT Ghost of Kyiv and he did NOT hit 40 planes. This is one of the most interesting statements included in an official statement shared on social networks by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The post, was published in the afternoon European time on Apr. 30, 2022, and appears to be a response to the reports that started to circulate on British media outlets on Apr. 29.
Citing Ukrainian sources, The Times was the first to report that a Ukrainian Air Force pilot, Maj. Stepan Tarabalka, 29, a father of one, shot down while flying a MiG-29 on Mar. 13, 2022, was the legendary Ghost of Kyiv, a fighter pilot who shot down more than 40 Russian aircraft.
We first reported about the legend of the Ghost on Feb. 25, shortly after the Russian troops had started their invasion of Ukraine and the news a mystery pilot who singlehandedly shot down six Russian aircraft in a matter of few hours, had gone viral.
According to social media posts, one day into the war, the Ghost of Kyiv had become the first air combat ace over European soil since World War II, achieving the ace-in-a-day (shooting down more than five enemy aircraft) status. As we explained back then, the legend started with a series of three tweets showing a loneUkrainian fighter jet operating over the capital, which were retweeted thousands of times. The Spanish newspaperMarca was among the first to claim that the Ghost of Kyiv had downed the six aircraft.Among his alleged kills, the Ghost initially claimed no less than two Russian Sukhoi Su-35s, a Russian Su-27 Flanker, a Russian MiG-29 and two Russian Su-25 ground attack aircraft.
Even the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense posted about the Ghost, retweeting footage of a MiG-29 fighting a Russian aircraft in what was later revealed to be a video recorded in the flight simulator DCS World. Former Ukrainian president, Petro Poroshenko, posted on Twitter a photo of a fighter pilot, claiming it to be the real Ghost of Kyiv. Obviously, there is no way to confirm his real identity and his air-to-air kills, but for many the one from the former president appeared to turn a wild urban legend into reality.
However, since the very beginning, the story didnt add up: as we clearly explained in our first post on the Ghost:
Theres only one catch: there probably is no Ghost of Kyiv and this internet legend is probably not true.
The legend of the Ghost of Kyiv is almost certainly an example of bizarre distortions and manipulations of fact or near-fact that are amplified during the chaos of war, especially a new war during the opening hours. These legends sometimes have at least some basis in fact, but as they travel through language barriers and across borders at the speed of light via social media, they become embellished, retransmitted and retweeted as news. There may have been Ukrainian air-to-air victories in the opening day of the war. There may have even been six total, or some other number. But the likelihood that six of these alleged aerial victories belongs to a singular, gallant ace-in-a-day is remote.
Despite the lack of evidence, many people claimed that the Ghost existed and kept fighting Russian jets, while many started to believe the Ghost was probably just a legend, that had become the worldwide emblem of the Ukrainian resistance, a moral-booster as well as the main character of many interesting artworks.
While stories about the Ghost of Kyiv have emerged every now and then after the first week or so of the war, the prevailing theory was that the mysterious pilot was just a legend that could give Ukrainian people hope, pride and desire to fight, acting as an example of bravery and love for the motherland to follow. Until the existence of the legendary pilot was allegedly supported by some Ukrainian sources cited by The Times and by various British tabloids immediately thereafter.
In the end, even the official Ukrainian accounts have had to post an official statement to respond to such reports that could probably damage the reputation and credibility of Kyivs military along with its past and future claims.
The post by the Ukrainian military roughly translate as follows:
PLEASE DO NOT FILL THE INFO SPACE WITH FAKES-Once again, we ask the Ukrainian community NOT to ignore the basic rules of information hygiene, not to issue the desired one as valid, check the sources of information before spreading it. Hero of Ukraine Stepan Tarabalka is NOT Ghost of Kiev and he did NOT hit 40 planes. On March 13, 2022, Major Stepan Tarabalka was heroically killed in an air battle with the dominant forces of the Russian occupiers. Heres the information about him on the official website of the KPSU: https://www.facebook.com/kpszsu/posts/339462291555059Ghost of Kiev is a superhero-legend whose character was created by Ukrainians! This is a faster collected image of pilots of the 40th Air Force tactical aviation brigade, who protect the sky of the capital. What suddenly appear where they are not expected! Military pilots are not yet studying abroad on F-16, as much as we all want it.No official statement on this matter has been published in the media! Well, and lastly, for especially creative American bombers do not fly over Ukraine either!Keep calm and use official sources of information. Glory to Ukraine! Public Relations Service Command Air Force Armed Forces of Ukraine
In other words, Maj. Stepan Tarabalka was a hero pilot who was killed in action on Mar. 13, 2022, but he did not shot down 40 Russian aircraft.
The post also addressed some other recent claims, as the one that Ukrainian pilots would be training on F-16s in Germany or that American bombers would be flying over Ukraine.
Therefore, as explained at the beginning of the war, the Ghost of Kyiv was a still is a meme, a collective image of all Ukrainian fighter pilots who bravely fight against Russian Aerospace Forces aircraft over Ukraine: a symbol rather than an actual pilot, no matter what some media outlets speculate.

Can you really spot a lie? Fake news is more difficult to catch than you think – ThePrint
Posted: at 11:31 am
On 1 December 2016, a man with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle entered a pizza restaurant in Washington DC because he believed that Hillary Clinton was sexually abusing children in the basement of that restaurant.
The man had read about this story the so-calledPizzagate scandalon social media posts and fake news websites and ultimately believed it was true. To his surprise, he found only some pizza dough and a bunch of frightened employees. Luckily, no one was harmed but the anecdote highlights how false news may have dramatic consequences.
Reading this, you may well be tempted to think that fake news and misinformation speak only to a few unsophisticated people with bizarre or extreme beliefs.
But while it has been found that people withpoor science knowledge, low cognitive abilitiesand atendency to be accepting of weak claimstend to be more inclined to believe false stories, you may want to think carefully about how immune you are to misinformation.
In fact, ask yourself the following questions: How good am I at judging the accuracy of news stories? If I read a fake story or heard a false pundit comment, would I really be able to spot the lie?
In our recent study entitledThe Ability to Distill the Truth, Tiziana Assenza, from the Toulouse School of Economics, and I conducted an online experiment to estimate Americans true ability to evaluate the accuracy of news items.
To do this, subjects read a series of short news stories on different topics from a wide range of sources. Independent fact-checking organizations had classified half of these news items as containing accurate information, and the remaining half as containing incorrect and demonstrably false information. For each news story, subjects had to state whether they believed that it contained accurate information or not.
Despite a large share of people with great confidence in their ability to cut through misinformation, we found that most people have limited ability to differentiate between fake and true news stories.
In fact, on average, participants in our experiments provided the correct evaluation of veracity only in 62% of the news stories they saw, and only 14% of subjects were able to discern the veracity of information in at least 80% of the news stories.
The viral and rapid diffusion of misinformation exposes people with poor abilities to discern the accuracy of news stories to greater chances of making adverse decisions, including financial choices. In fact, about 63%of Americans argue that the dissemination of misinformation and fake news has made it more difficult to make important financial decisions.
Moreover, the spread of misinformation is detrimental not only to individuals but also to society as a whole. It can generate significant economic losses through several channels of the economy, such as higher costs for public health, manipulated returns and reputation management costs for companies.
For example, in 2019,Metro Bank faced an 11% drop in stock market capitalizationafterfalse rumourson social media reported it was experiencing financial problems.
The events we have lived through in the last decade from Brexit to the election of Donald Trump and the COVID-19 pandemic have created great concern about the role played by false news and have motivated policymakers to move the contrast to misinformation to the top of their agenda.
While the policy debate focuses mostly on the role played by media companies in the creation and diffusion of fake news, scholars have proposed different approaches to increase peoples ability to discern the truthfulness of information.
People often share misinformation on social media simply because their attention is on factors unrelated to accuracy, such as the desire to please followers.
Accordingly,a simple intervention, which asks individuals to think about the accuracy of the news story they read before sharing it, has been found to increase the quality of the news that people share on social media.
In our research, we tested a different kind of intervention: improving peoples awareness by informing them of their true ability to differentiate between fake and true news stories. To do this, we randomly selected half the participants and told them the number of news stories that they correctly identified as accurate or inaccurate.
We found that subjects who received this informative feedback increased their awareness of the problems related to misinformation and showed a greater desire to act against the risk of being affected by it.
