Dow Partners with Plastogaz to Scale Advanced Recycling Technology – Plastics Today

A partnership between Dow and advanced recycling innovator Plastogaz promises to recover some of the estimated $120 billion of value lost annually in plastic waste by accelerating the conversion of waste plastic into feedstock.

Dows investment in Switzerlands Plastogaz and its proprietary catalytic hydro-cracking technology is intended to scale advanced recycling solutions to enable major brands to use recycled content in their products. This is vital to brand owners in achieving their highly publicized targets for usage of post-consumer recycled content coming up in 2025 and beyond.

The collaboration is an important strategic step for Dow and advances our commitment to create circular plastics with the lowest possible CO2 footprint, said Keith Cleason, Dows Vice President of Olefins, Aromatics and Alternatives. We are excited to continue to collaborate with innovative startups like Plastogaz, who share our ambition to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and plastic waste, in line with our global sustainability goals.

Plastogazs technology is more efficient and less energy intensive than some other forms of advanced recycling, the company said. Dows materials expertise will help further develop the technology. The goal isto convert polyolefin film and packaging waste into materials with the same quality as current virgin polyethylene produced from fossil naphtha, said Dow.

Dow anticipates commercialization to start within the next five to seven years.

How Is Ediscovery Technology Rising to the Challenge of Collaboration Data? Reflections on Legalweek 2022 – JD Supra

After a couple of years away from the full in-person conference experience, the team at Hanzo was so excited to be back at Legalweek earlier this month. It was wonderful to feel that things are beginning to return to some semblance of normal. As always, we left inspired by new ideas, new conversations, and new connections.

I was heartened to hearboth in presentations and among colleagues at networking sessionssome of the conversations weve been having here at Hanzo for quite some time. One recurring theme from Legalweek concerned the challenges of ediscovery with modern collaboration data. A number of sessions discussed the burgeoning use of collaboration applications and the ediscovery challenges and risks that follow.

Im glad to see this growing recognition that the collaboration data generated by applications like Slack, Jira, Trello, Miro, and more are vital to resolving litigation matters and determining the facts in investigations. That awareness is causing more companies to grapple with questions about managing the data that their collaboration tools generate. And there are a lot of questions!

Here are the highlights of some of the conversations I heard at Legalweek.

Several factors have driven the recent rise in collaboration data. First, of course, there was the widespread shift to remote work for knowledge workers worldwide and the accompanying need for workers to have communication tools that enabled ongoing connection despite physical separation. Technological advancements in recent yearspredating the pandemichave also spurred the expansion of tools, and in doing so fundamentally changed how and where we communicate in the business setting. Its no longer just email or messaging platforms, as communication capabilities become integrated into ticketing systems, project management tools, HR systems, and practically every new SaaS application within the enterprise. The capabilities of those tools, and their interconnections, also continue to expand, creating new challenges for information management.

At the same time, litigants have recognized that these emerging tools may generate discoverable data. Moreover, organizations have realized that these applications often contain data that can help them get to the bottom of their investigatory inquiries, and, in doing so, help mitigate risk.

Of course, just because data might be relevant or helpful doesnt mean its readily accessible or straightforward. How do organizations identify, preserve, collect, and produce collaboration data for ediscovery or investigations? How do we define a custodian, when entire teams may have access to a document or communication channel? How can legal professionals determine a fair and reasonable scope of discovery when traditional ESI protocols no longer apply?

When discrete tools like email were the primary data source for ediscovery, we negotiated scope first in terms of data sources, custodians, and date ranges. So, to begin with, we might preserve or collect Johns mailbox with emails from January 2020 to May 2020. Wed refine that scope in terms of topics, themes, and perhaps keywords. Now were not looking at all of Johns emails for five months; were only looking at his emails within that time window that contains a keyword or relates to a topic.

Defining scope was relatively easy because an email message generally includes all of the information needed to determine its relevance and importance (and the content is static once sent!) Ediscovery teams can see who an email is from, whom its addressed to, what it relates to, and how the conversation unfolds over time.

With collaboration tools, though, messages are no longer self-contained conversations. How, then, do we search through that data for important information? Scoping collaboration data is a Goldilocks problem that presents issues on both sides.

First, theres how to scope an inquiry that captures enough data when an individual chat message or comment contains only a tiny sliver of related information. The message itself doesnt tell you everything about who was involved in a conversation, how the conversation began, or how many topicsnever mind what topicsthat conversation encompassed.

Context, as weve said many times, is crucial. Within Slack, we often solve that problem by considering the direct hit messages that include keywords or key concepts and a set number of messages or a defined amount of time before and after those direct hits.

But context is only one side of the coin. Its equally easy to create an overbroad scope with collaboration data because collaboration apps generate so much differing data. A Slack conversation could include links to an Outlook calendar event, a Google document, a Helpdesk ticket, or a Miro project board. Those linked pieces of information are referred to as modern attachmentsand they pose some of the trickiest questions for defining scope.

The judges debate that kicked off the last day of Legalweek discussed the problem of modern attachments head-on. In the same way, we are starting the debate over modern attachments email, are links to integrated data sources embedded within a chat message also relevant to the scope of a matter? To answer that question, ediscovery teams need to access each attachment to determine what it is and what its about. Is there a way to automate that process? Or does identifying relevance mean clicking through each link one at a time?

Theres another question thats hidden a layer deeper: that of versioning. Say youre looking at an Asana project related to an investigatory inquiry or an ediscovery matter. That project references and links to a document stored in a document repository like Google Drive. But is the version you see today, while youre evaluating the issue, the same version that existed then when it was initially linked? If not, how do you find that version?

Its a compelling question, to be sure, and one that the legal industry hasnt found a complete answer for yet.

One parting thought: despite the complexities of collaboration data, organizations must determine the scope of an inquiry based on the relevance and importance of data, not on their technical ability to find, search, or export that data. In other words, you should be able to confidently manage whatever collaboration data your organization has that would help to resolve an issue, rather than restricting your inquiry to traditional data sources because you dont know how to access or manipulate a particular data source.

Once Rivals, Now Partners: Taxi Technology Company Creative Mobile Technologies Joins Forces With Uber in Groundbreaking Deal That Will Give Yellow…

NEW YORK, March 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Passengers in New York City will soon be able to use their Uber app to e-hail a yellow taxicab as a result of a first-in-the-nation deal announced today between Uber and taxi technology system provider Creative Mobile Technologies (CMT). Yellow taxi drivers on the CMT platform, which includes the taxi app Arro, will gain access to Uber's massive customer base, yielding a higher volume of trips and expanded revenue opportunities.

"New York City is back!," said Ron Sherman, Chairman of Creative Mobile Technologies and a pioneer in the taxi industry. "As businesses bring their employees back, as tourists flock to New York City again and as New Yorkers start going out and replenishing our local economy after a devastating pandemic, yellow taxis and Uber are bringing the best our industries have to offer to help this city get back on its feet."

"This is a real win for drivers no longer do they have to worry about finding a fare during off peak times or getting a street hail back to Manhattan when in the outerboroughs," said Guy Peterson, Director of Business Development for Uber. "And this is a real win for riders who will now have access to thousands of yellow taxis in the Uber app."

The synergy between CMT and Uber began in 2021 when the taxi technology company began doing business with Uber's out-of-home advertising company, Uber OOH. CMT, which operates a full-service garage, is currently servicing a 3,500 vehicle taxitop contract for Uber OOH. CMT installs Uber's digital taxitops for which Uber sells advertising. This first-of-its-kind relationship between CMT and Uber grew into an expanded business relationship which paved the way for the taxi industry and Uber to rethink their rivalry and instead focus on shared goals for New Yorkers.

The Uber-CMT deal will start in beta this spring and roll out to the general public this summer. Anyone with the Uber app will have access to thousands of yellow taxis that operate on the CMT/Arro platform, greatly enhancing their transportation choices. Taxi drivers will see Uber-originated fares on their driver monitors which they already use to service e-hails from the Arro taxi app. The deal was designed by CMT and Uber to be a seamless experience for both the passenger and driver.

As we all know, the world of technology is a part of an ever-evolving continuum. Lorry Perkins is one of the transformative team members driving the ongoing change that occurs in technology. And although shes only been the Senior Director of the Technology Transformation Office for two years, her impact is substantial to those on the Global Technology team.

The core of Perkins work is giving Nike the tools to think about how it responds to the different waves of tech as well as learning how the company can upscale employees throughout global technology.

Safe Schools For Alex, a nonprofit formed by Max Schachter, whose son Alex was murdered during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, was awarded a nearly $2 million grant from the federal government to develop an enhanced school safety dashboard for Floridas public K-12 schools.

Along with the University of Florida, Schachters 501(c)(3) was awarded $1,998,585 by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs to fund a pilot program for the new dashboard.

SafeSchools for Alex is extremely excited to partner with the University of Floridaand the Florida Department of Education to create the first real-time public SchoolSafety Dashboard toassistparents,schools,legislators, and law enforcementin their efforts to reduce violence and exclusionarydiscipline in all K-12 schools statewide, Max Schachter said in a written announcement Thursday. We hope this pilot programbecomes a model for how data can be used to makeschools safer across the United States.

Chris Curran, who directs the Education Policy Research Center at the University of Florida, is collaborating with Schachters nonprofit on the project.

The opportunity to collaborate on expanding the work Safe Schools for Alex has begun while leveraging the robust school safety data collected in Florida provides unprecedented opportunities to use data to inform how and where we target supports to ensure safe schools, Curran said.

Following several high-profile school shootings in recent years, including the attack that killed 17 people at MSD on Feb. 14, 2018, policymakers and educators have sought new ways to protect students in school. The new dashboard program aims to further protect kids from violent acts.

In partnership with the Florida Department of Educations Office of Safe Schools, the newly funded initiative will work to build on Safe Schools for Alexs existing school safety dashboards to enhance the user experience, incorporate more frequent updates of data, glean actionable insights from analysis of the data and support school personnel on the use of the dashboard, according to the announcement.

According to the announcement, work on the enhanced school safety data dashboard project will begin in the coming months and continue through 2024.

Although the names may not be familiar to everyone, there are a number of companies that have established reputations for quality and reliability. We also took into account feedback from actual users to assess how these machines perform on a day-to-day basis.

Set up and Use: The resin 3D printers we looked at for this article all fall into the entry-level/small production category so it is likely that many buyers will have little or no knowledge of how they function. Setting up the machine, monitoring, and completing the build are key factors. Each resin 3D printer has its own routine, but we selected those that were as straightforward as possible, as long as it had no adverse impact on performance.

Anycubics interpretation of 3840 x 2400 pixels is slightly higher than standard, resulting in smoother and more detailed modeling.

That said, any movement during the printing process could spoil the finished item. The Anycubic Photon Mono X has rigid Z-axis (height) control to maximize precision. It also uses a brushed aluminum build platform with good adhesion for greater workpiece stability. Unfortunately the flip side is that the platform is a bit of a pain to clean afterwards.

A free cellphone app is included for remote control, and monitoring of the print process. However, installing the necessary WiFi on the printer can be frustrating, and the app offers no real advantage. Many users dont feel it is worth the effort, and as it has no impact on performance it can safely be ignored.

Why It Made The Cut: The Voxelab Proxima comes from a highly respected manufacturer. It is a reliable introduction for those who are interested in resin 3D printing, but dont want to spend a lot of money.

Voxelab is a subsidiary of Flashforge, a company well known for high-quality filament 3D printers, and professional-grade resin models. The Voxelab Proxima resin 3D printer forms part of their budget range, which is aimed very much at hobbyists. For many it is the best 3D printer for beginners because while fairly basic it is well-made, reliable, and easy to set up and use. It comes fully assembled, and just needs to be leveled before it is ready to print. Gloves and good quality scrapers are included, so they havent cut corners when it comes to accessories.

The Voxelab Proxima resin 3D printer does have a few minor drawbacks, though they are perhaps understandable for the price. The print volume is smaller than many, though still very reasonable. At 25mm per hour, it is one of the slowest resin 3D printers we looked at. The motor is a little noisy. If any of this matters, then potential buyers will need to look elsewhere, and invest more. However, for the money the Voxelab Proxima is a surprisingly good machine, and represents excellent value.

Why It Made The Cut: There are two ways to look at the Elegoo Mars 2 Pro: As an affordable machine for the beginner, or a capable production platform for small items. In either case, it offers great value.

Budget-friendly 2K resin 3D printers like the Elegoo Mars 2 Pro are often seen as the inferior machine. However, while 4K versions do offer higher resolution, the difference may not be important in the finished piece. Although 2K models dont portray the same level of detail, with a well-made machine like the Elegoo there neednt be any loss in dimensional accuracy.

The body of the Elegoo is mostly aluminum, giving it a solid feel. The Z-axis is noted for its quality manufacture, and provides smooth motion. Setup is straightforward, with easy leveling. It comes with all necessary accessories, plus printed and digital instructions. A test print is included, but many experts recommend skipping this. The Elegoo has a substantial, flat base that makes it difficult to remove, so damage to either the piece or the print plate is possible. A model with less contact area is suggested instead, either of the users own design, or one of the many available online.

Apart from this minor inconsistency, the Elegoo Mars 2 Pro is difficult to criticize. A nice extra is the carbon filter that reduces unpleasant fumes. The lid has a silicon rubber seal which makes this particularly effective.

Why It Made The Cut: The Anycubic Photon Mono X 6K uses a proven, high-quality platform, and upgrades it to provide fast, high-resolution resin 3D printing at a very competitive price.

Anycubics impressive 6K resin 3D printer is based on the popular Photon Mono X that we have as our top pick. Its another very well-made machine, and is just as easy to set up. There have also been a number of significant improvements. The headline feature is the 6K resolution that can produce extremely fine detail in all kinds of 3D models. This might be expected to come at the expense of production speed, but in fact the Photon Mono X 6K is faster. Print volume is also slightly larger.

The build plate on the standard Photon Mono X has been criticized for providing too much adherence, and therefore being difficult to clean. The 6K model has a checkered pattern, rather than brushed aluminum, but problems still exist if large, solid bases are built. The 6K machine also uses the same WiFi setup, which is fussy, and many independent testers feel it doesnt add a great deal of value.

A big question for many will be whether the Anycubic Photon Mono X 6K is worth the cost, especially as the standard model is already very good. The 6K version offers tremendous detail, and can build larger models faster. It may not be enough of a difference for many hobbyists, but in a small production environment this could be a key issue. The Anycubic Photon Mono X 6K is also very competitively priced when compared with other 6K machines.

At first glance, the specifications for the 3D Systems FabPro 1000 does not look particularly impressive. Print volume is somewhat limited, and it isnt particularly fast. However, this is not a resin 3D printer intended for hobbyists and plastic models. It is a commercial DLP machine aimed at jewelers, orthodontists, engineering companies, etc., that either need to produce high-quality working prototypes, or functional components with high durability.

Much of the FabPro 1000s impressive production capability is due to the specialist resins available for it. FabPro Tough is strong enough for mechanical testing. FabPro JewelCast can create highly-detailed masters from which casts can be created. FabPro NextDent is used for dental applications.

Resolution is given in microns rather than pixels (a micron is 1/25,000 of an inch). Each build layer of a model is just 30 microns thick. For some comparison, the smallest particle the human eye can detect is about 25 microns. The FabPro 1000 can provide very high detail with great repeatability, and can run more or less continuously if required. It also costs a good deal less than similarly specified rivals.

Resin 3D printing is often seen as modern technology, but the use of resin and UV light for modeling has actually been around for 40 years. While many of the principles remain the same, the following elements should be investigated when making your choice.

There are three common types of resin 3D printer (though confusingly 4 terms can be used). They are SLA (stereolithography), DLP (digital light processing), and MSLA (masked stereolithography), which is also called LCD.

In basic terms, a UV resin 3D printer works by projecting ultraviolet light onto liquid resin, which then hardens as a result. Objects are built in a number of layers each one often thinner than a human hair.

SLA is the longest established technology, and still widely used. It uses a laser to form the layer in a number of passes. DLP flashes the whole layer all at once, so generally speaking it is faster. MSLA is similar to DLP, but also uses a mask to filter and shape the projected light. This can lead to greater precision, combined with the speed advantages of DLP. Most of our top picks fall into this category. Technically speaking the SLA laser creates smooth lines, whereas DLP and MSLA use pixels. However, resolution is the key feature here, which we talk about in a moment.

In a production environment the type of resin 3D printer can be significant. However, for the machines covered in this article the differences are often small. Knowing the print speed is probably sufficient.

While early resin 3D printer screens were RGB, the majority are now monochrome. The latter uses a shorter exposure, which speeds up printing, and also uses less power.

The screen also defines the detail possible. Resolution is usually either 2K (2560 x 1440 pixels), 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) or 6K (6144 x 3160 pixels), though the number of pixels can vary slightly from one machine to another. Each increase in resolution comes at greater cost. However, even the lowest 2K resolution is higher than most filament 3D printers are capable of, so for many that will be enough. That said, 4K has become something of a standard. The difference between 4K and 6K is only likely to be important for users with a need for highly detailed pieces.

A resin 3D printers print volume is the maximum size of object that can be created. This is often given in millimeters (25.4mm = 1 inch). Where quoted, the X and Y dimensions refer to width and depth (front to back) whereas Z refers to height.

Many of the best resin 3D printer makers also offer their own resins, which simplifies choice. However, there are all kinds of resins available, with different characteristics. Some offer increased strength. Some produce a surface that is better for painting. There are metal resins that can withstand temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Resin properties are beyond the scope of this article, but it is an area well worth investigating. Compatibility may impact choice.

Resin objects take time to cure fully. Some of this happens during the production process, but objects may not be entirely cured when completed. Some require additional UV exposure to reach full strength. For some resins, simply leaving the item on a sunny window ledge could be enough. UV lamps or dedicated machines (washing and curing stations) can be used. While this wont directly affect the choice of resin 3D printer, its important to know whether post-processing is necessary in order to ensure component longevity.

A resin 3D printer is a device that uses liquid resin and a UV light source to create 3D models. The variations in processes are discussed above.

Resin 3D printers are good for detailed models and prototypes, with a high-quality surface finish.

How much a good resin 3D printer costs really depends on the size of model and detail required. Entry-level machines can be found for around $200. High-end production equipment can be over $200,000. In our detailed report above we cover models from $200 to $2,000.

The main difference between resin and filament 3D printers is that the former generally provides more detail. Filament 3D printers can be faster (though they have to sacrifice precision), and produce large pieces more economically. Our recent Creality 3D printer review may be of interest.

Ventilation for resin 3D printers is recommended. 3D resin printers should not be used in unventilated living spaces. Some resins are toxic, and while non-toxic 3D resin is available the fumes can be irritating to eyes and airways.

US Government Releases Classified UFO Report With Huge, Intriguing Redactions – Futurism

Name a better duo than the US government and hiding secrets about UFOs. Well wait.

While the Pentagon has in recent years started trickling out documents acknowledging its interest in unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) its rebranded term for good old fashioned UFOs much of it has been redacted due to its sensitive nature. However, what the releases do reveal can be intriguing.

Case in point: The Black Vault, a privately owned database of declassified records, has now acquiredthe classified version of that infamous UFO report that the Director of National Intelligence sent to Congress back in June 2021.

While an enormous amount of the document is redacted, including almost every potentially interesting portion, what we can see is certainly eyebrow-raising. One lengthy redaction concernscommon shapes of UFOs, for instance, and another appears to describe a report of a Navy pilot describing some sort of aerial encounter.

The document also contains numerous instances in which it described the most common shapes of UAP. While the description of the shapes themselves were redacted, even the existence of that section wasnt included in the report originally released to the public last year.

Other sections of the report such as And a Handful of UAP Appear to Demonstrate Advanced Technology and UAP Probably Lack a Single Explanation are also expanded on with the newly released document. The former includes a section, for instance, in which multipleNavy personnel witnessed UAP.

One new account said that a pilot was fighting to keep his aircraft in the airspace, apparently due to high winds, when they witnessed a UAP whose position was unaffected.

The entire document is available for download at The Black Vault. Like we said, its heavily redacted but theres still a lot of intriguing elements in it. Often, what they leave in can tell you a lot about what they leave out.
