The War on Free Speech: Chess Federation Suspends Grandmaster for Supporting the Russian Invasion – Jonathan Turley
Posted: March 26, 2022 at 6:43 am
We have been discussing Russian artistsandathletes blackballed for failing to publicly denounce Putin of his invasion of Russia. Despite the support that most of us have expressed for Ukraine against this unprovoked and savage attack, there is a danger that we are losing a war at home against free speech. The Russian invasion has added new allies in a growing anti-free-speech movement to censor and blackball dissenting voices. The latest such controversy involves Sergey Karjakin, a Russian grandmaster who supports the Russian invasion. He has been banned from competitions forsix months by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). He has been banned due to the unpopularity of his political views an act that should be denounced by anyone who values free speech.
It is important to note that Karjakin is not being banned as a Russian competitor. Various organizations have cut off Russian athletes from representing the country or doing so under the Russian flag in light of the invasion.
Rather, Karjakin is being barred due to his public statements.
Karjakin has an interesting profile because he has represented both Ukraine and Russia in international competitions. He was born in Crimea and represented Ukraine in three Chess Olympiads and Russia for five of the events.
Karjakin considers himself Russian and views supporting the war a patriotic duty. He tweeted:
Many people ask if I regret my public support of the special operation? After all, I have already lost invitations to Western tournaments and may lose an invitation to the candidates tournament. My answer is simple. I am on the side of Russia and my President. No matter what happens, I will support my country in any situation without thinking for a second!
His my country, right or wrong approach led to a furious outcry and the FIDE ban. The organization cited its Code of Ethics and particularly Article 2.2.10 as the basis for the punitive action. That rule is a nightmare of ambiguity for those concerned about free speech and corporate censorship:
In addition, disciplinary action in accordance with this Code of Ethics will be taken in cases of occurrences which cause the game of chess, FIDE or its federations to appear in an unjustifiable unfavorable light and in this way damage its reputation.
Lets break that down: any case of occurrence (whatever that means) that causes (however that is defined) unjustifiable unfavorable light (whatever that constitutes) to FIDE reputation (whatever that is). It could have been simplified by saying that we reserve the right to bar anyone who says anything we do not like.
In this case, FIDE declared that
EDC First Instance Chamber, formed by Yolander Persaud (Guyana), Ravindra Dongre (India), and Johan Sigeman (Sweden) as Chairperson, unanimously decided as follows:
The statements by Sergey Karjakin on the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine has led to a considerable number of reactions on social media and elsewhere, to a large extent negative towards the opinions expressed by Sergey Karjakin
A necessary condition for the establishment of guilt is that the statements have reached the public domain. This concept, with respect to disrepute clauses in sport, is not the world at large but the sport in which the accused engages, such as chess. Information concerning the accuseds conduct which is not published in the media, but which can be learnt without a great deal of labour by persons engaged in the chess world or a relevant part of it, will be in the public domain and satisfy the public exposure element. The EDC Chamber is comfortably satisfied that this condition is fulfilled in this case.
The EDC Chamber finds, against the background given above, on the standard of comfortable satisfaction that the statements of Sergey Karjakin, which, by his own choice and presentation, can be connected to the game of chess, damage the reputation of the game of chess and/or FIDE. The likelihood that these statements will damage the reputation of Sergey Karjakin personally is also considerable.
It is particularly chilling that Karjakin is sanctioned because his opposing viewed reached the public domain. There is another word for that: free speech.
The board opted not to punish Sergei Shipov, another Russian grandmaster who posted public statements of support for the invasion. The distinction only magnifies the arbitrary elements in this action:
In comparison with Sergey Karjakin, Sergei Shipov is considerably less known and has, therefore, a less powerful platform. The statements made by Sergei Shipov are also of a slightly different and less provocative character than the ones made by Karjakin. In an overall evaluation of the potential negative impact on the game of chess and/or FIDE, the EDC Chamber is not sufficiently convinced that Sergei Shipovs statements qualify as a breach of article 2.2.10.
So both grandmasters publicly spoke in favor of the invasion but FIDE found that Shipov was less provocative in his public comments despite holding the same opinion.
FIDE is joining companies and groups that claim to be fighting tyranny by punishing those who exercise their freedom of speech. It is perfectly Putinesque.
Wartime is often the most dangerous time for free speech. The desire to silence others rests like a dormant virus in any society. People prone to censorship find license in such times. Few object in such times. After all, no one wants to be accused of being soft on Russia or, worse yet, a traitor. Even the barring of political parties in Ukraine by Zelenskyy has barely attract attention, let alone criticism.
The war in Ukraine is costing humanity greatly with increasing evidence of war crimes and untold suffering. We should not add free speech to the prohibitive costs of this war. This is not about supporting Ukraine. It is about fighting for the freedoms that define a people.
We can do both. We can stand with Ukraine and free speech.

When Do You Need to Start Taking Vitamins? – CNET
Posted: at 6:42 am
Getty Images
A bottle of nearly mummified Centrum Women Multigummies sits on my desk. The only time I remember to take the recommended two gummies is when my mother's shrill voice blasts through my phone's speaker. She's of the opinion that everyone should be taking at least a multivitamin.
I rarely think about my vitamin levels, and I suspect many people don't either. So when do our bodies need us to take our vitamins? While research suggests that they're not strictly necessary for the average person, supplements are helpful for those who need them.
Our bodies need vitamins for development and proper functioning. Most of the vitamins our bodies depend on come from our food. That means that the average American won't need to take vitamin supplements if they eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, proteins and whole grains.
However, that's not always the case. There are times when vitamin or mineral supplements are necessary. Dietary limitations or natural deficiencies can keep you from getting enough of certain vitamins. Iron, vitamin D, B12 and calcium are among the most common vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Unless you take an at-home test or get a blood analysis from your doctor, you don't know if you lack vitamins, making it harder to know when to start taking a supplement.
Being "vitamin deficient" is a broad term. In many cases, you may be lacking just one vitamin. Below you'll find the 13 essential vitamins and the common deficiency symptoms for each.
Vitamin A: Gastrointestinal diseases like Celiac disease or cirrhosis of the liver can impact the body's ability to absorb vitamin A as it should. The most common symptoms of a vitamin Adeficiency include frequent infections, skin irritation, night blindness or hazy vision.
Vitamin C: Typically, vitamin C deficiency is uncommon in developed countries. However, it does affect 7.1% of US adults. Vitamin C is crucial for collagen production in our bodies; its lack is linked to damaged skin and slow healing wounds. Easy bruising is one of the most common warning signs for this deficiency.
Vitamin D: Our bodies synthesize sunlight into vitamin D. It's essential for our immune health and has been linked to a lower risk of infection of COVID-19. A vitamin D deficiency can result in frequent illness, lower bone metabolism and muscle pain.
Vitamin E: Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that protects your cells from damage. While it is rare in healthy people, a vitamin E deficiency contributes to nerve and muscle damage that can cause vision impairments or loss of feeling in your arms or legs.
Vitamin K: Vitamin K is essential for blood coagulation and cardiovascular health. It also plays a role in bone development. If you are deficient, you're at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, bleeding issues and lower bone strength. Vitamin K deficiency is generally rare in adults. Babies are at risk for vitamin K deficiency bleeding, or VKDB, though.
B Vitamins: There are eight B vitamins -- thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin (B7), folate and folic acid and vitamin B12. Older adults and pregnant women tend to be more at risk for vitamin B deficiencies. Symptoms can include things like anemia, fatigue or weakness.
The vitamins our bodies need to grow and function change throughout our lives. As we age, our bodies become less effective at absorbing or producing certain vitamins. Below you can find nutritional needs by age group.
Baby formula is fortified with vitamins, so you do not need to worry about additional supplements if they have more than 500 milliliters of formula a day. In the case of vitamin D, breastfed babies do need an additional source. The Americans and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that babies who are breastfed also have a supplement of400 international units, or IU, of vitamin D each day. Vitamin D is not only essential for bone development, but it also prevents rickets.
Childhood is a time of significant physical growth and extreme cognitive development. The US government recommends supplements including vitamin A, C and D daily for children aged 6 months to 5 years old.
With increased growth and metabolism, the nutritional needs of adolescents and teens increase. Generally, the daily recommendation for kids aged 9 to 18 is at least 1,300 mg of calcium, 1.8 to 2.4 micrograms of B vitamins and 11 IU of vitamin E. The average teen can get their daily requirement from a healthy diet.
The Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board provides reference points for healthy children and adults. Remember, these numbers are based on averages. You should talk to your doctor if you suspect that your teen is experiencing a vitamin deficiency.
The National Institutes of Health suggests that the average adult needs around 1,000 milligramsof calcium each day to maintain bone density through adulthood. A supplement may be necessary during the fall and winter months when you cannot get an adequate amount of vitamin D from the sun. It's hard to get enough vitamin D from your diet.
Women and those breastfeeding are the most likely to have nutrient deficiencies when compared to other groups. Pregnancy shifts the nutritional needs of women -- more macronutrients and micronutrients are required. The CDC advises pregnant women to take 400 micrograms of folic acid each day to help prevent potential congenital disabilities.
Breastfeeding mothers have to produce enough nutrients to provide their children with what they need. As a result, the recommended vitamin A intake nearly doubles when breastfeeding to roughly 1,300 milligrams a day.
Parts of the elderly population are susceptible to vitamin deficiencies due to concerns related to trouble chewing or medical issues. In addition, as we age, our bodies naturally absorb less vitamin B12 from the foods we eat. Up to 43% of older adults have a B12 deficiency. People over 50 should take a vitamin B12 supplement or integrate fortified foods into their diets. Concentrated B12 shots are also available.
Calcium is another nutrient that our gut absorbs less as we age, which may lead to weak bones or frequent fractures. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends that adults over 70 intake 1,200 mg of calcium each day.
In elders, vitamin deficiencies may mount on top of each other. A lack of calcium in the body is related to a vitamin D deficiency found in older adults as our bodies are less effective at producing it. Our bodies need vitamin D to absorb calcium.
Unless you lack certain vitamins, you probably don't need to take vitamins regularly, with the caveat that you are maintaining a well-balanced diet. Vitamins have benefits, but they are not a shortcut to a healthy lifestyle. Vitamins are just a piece of the puzzle used in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Which supplements are banned by the military? Better check this database – Military Times
Posted: at 6:42 am
The Defense Department has issued an instruction that governs the use of dietary supplements among service members, creates a new training requirement and bars any on-base retailers from selling products with any banned ingredients.
The guidance, nearly a decade in the making, also requires the creation of an online database that service members can reference before using any sort of pre-workout or other supplement promising an edge.
Dietary supplements include ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and enzymes, according to the instruction released earlier this month. Dietary supplements are marketed in forms such as tablets, capsules, soft gels, gel caps, powders, and liquids.
A range of anabolic steroids are also on the list, as well as substances that are more commonly considered recreational drugs.
One of the ingredients has a close chemical make-up to the drug PCP, with the same sedative and hallucinogenic effects. Nine are classified as synthetic cannabinoids, which many troops will probably recognize from the the wave of popularity of drugs like Spice and K2 in the military going back a decade or so.
While those wont be confused for dietary supplements, there are some overlapping elements.
The primary reason cannabinoid and synthetic stimulant guidance was put in the dietary DoDI is because many of these products come in either food form, can be added to food, or can be directly ingested through the mouth, Maj. Charlie Dietz, a Pentagon spokesman, told Military Times on Thursday.
For instance, cannabidiol is an ingredient in some workout recovery products.
DoD has been developing dietary supplement guidance for the past decade, as the rise of bodybuilding culture coupled with the wide array of products available has raised the popularity of supplements among service members, with some data suggesting that dietary supplements are more popular in the military than in the general population.
Because the DoD database is so vast, the best bet is to manually enter all the ingredients of any supplement product to see if a banned substance comes up.
As for future training, several DoD organizations will coordinate to create and track it. It wont be an annual requirement, but part of professional education that troops will receive when they enter service, as well as periodically as they complete promotion requirements.
Military health and wellness staff will also receive safety training, according to the instruction.
For any troops prescribed a banned substance for a specific medical purpose, or who receives a substance as part of DoD-sanctioned research, according to the policy, use must be recorded in their electronic health records.

Sitka Intercepts Additional Visible Gold at its New Blackjack Gold Zone at the RC Gold Project in Yukon – PR Newswire
Posted: at 6:40 am
The Company has completed three holes and is currently drilling its fourth hole of the program (DDRCCC-21-025). Over 1,100 metres of drilling have been completed to date. Drilling has focused on further defining the mineralized intrusive intersected at the Blackjack zone in drillhole DDRCCC-21-021 (Hole 21) which returned 1.17 g/t gold over 220.1 metres, including 50.5 metres of 2.08 g/t gold (see news release dated December 13th, 2021). Drill core from the winter portion of the drill program is being shipped to a facility in Whitehorse, Yukon, for detailed logging and processing with initial logging being completed at the Project site. Numerous occurrences of visible gold have been observed in the drill core (for example, see Figure 1), and all the drill holes have intersected significant sections of the main mineralized intrusive megacrystic granite unit as was seen in Hole 21. A second drill is anticipated to be mobilized to the Project site within the next few weeks.
"We are learning a tremendous amount about the Blackjack zone with this winter portion of our diamond drill program," Stated Cor Coe, CEO of Sitka. "Our biggest recognition from this drilling is that our mineralized intrusive is a dike and sill complex as seen at deposits like Donlin Creek(5). This has the potential to dramatically increase the strike length, footprint, and size of this deposit, and should result in more ounces of gold being closer to surface which we expect will positively impact future economic considerations such as pit design. With the several instances of visible gold being observed during the logging of these recent drill holes, the potential of the Blackjack zone continues to grow and we look forward to seeing what the assay results will produce."

About the RC Gold Project
The RC Gold Project consists of a 376 square kilometre contiguous district-scale land package located in the newly road accessible Clear Creek, Big Creek, and Sprague Creek districts in the heart of Yukon's Tintina Gold Belt and of the Tombstone Gold Belt. It is the largest consolidated land package strategically positioned mid-way between Victoria Gold's Eagle Gold MineYukon's newest gold mine which reached commercial production in the summer of 2020and Golden Predator's Brewery Creek Gold Mine. The RC Gold Project land package comprises five underlying properties, namely, the RC, Bee Bop, Mahtin, Clear Creek, and Barney Ridge properties*. The Company recently identified a large 500 m by 2000 m intrusion related gold system on the Property at the Saddle Eiger zone and to date has drilled 19 diamond drill holes into this system. This has been the main focus of the Company's drill programs at RC Gold in 2020 and 2021 which have returned several significant gold intercepts, including the last drill hole from the 2021 drill program, DDRCCC-21-021 ("Hole 21") that intersected 220.1 metres of 1.17 g/t gold from surface.Hole 21, located in the Saddle West Zone, was drilled under a greater than 500 ppb gold-in-soil anomaly that was previously identified on surface and is part of the larger 2 kilometre by 500 metre gold-in-soil anomaly that stretches from the Saddle West Zone to the Eiger Zone. This drill hole was collared 200 metres south of any previous drilling conducted and intersected a newly recognized controlling structure to mineralization known as the Blackjack Fault (see news release dated December 13, 2021).
Sitka Gold inherited a wealth of historical and current data from these properties from work spanning the last 40 years. Recent exploration work and the compilation of historical data have defined several mineralized zones with both bulk tonnage, intrusion-related gold deposit targets and high-grade, vein- and breccia-hosted gold targets. The RC Gold Project also has a common border with Victoria Gold's Clear Creek property at its western boundary and Florin Resources' Florin Gold property at its northern boundary.
*For more detailed information on the underlying properties please visit our website atwww.sitkagoldcorp.com.
Deposit Model
Exploration on the Property has mainly focused on identifying an intrusion-related gold system ("IRGS"). The property is part of the Tombstone Gold Belt which is the prominent host to IRGS deposits within the Tintina Gold Province in Yukon and Alaska. Notable deposits from the belt include: Fort Knox Mine in Alaska with current Proven and Probable Reserves of 230 million tonnes at 0.3 g/t Au (2.471 million ounces; Sims 2018)(1); Eagle Gold Mine with current Proven and Probable Reserves of 155 million tonnes at a diluted grade of 0.65 g/t Au at the Eagle and Olive deposits (3.261 million ounces; Goodwin et al. 2019)(2); the Brewery Creek epizonal deposit with current Indicated Mineral Resource of 22.2 million tonnes at a gold grade of 1.11 g/t (0.789 million ounces; Hulse et al. 2020)(3); and the Florin Gold deposit, located adjacent to Sitka's RC Gold project, with a current Inferred Mineral Resource of 170.99 million tonnes grading 0.45 g/t (2.47 million ounces; Simpson 2021)(4).*

Sports betting bill headed to Missouri Senate – KSHB 41 Kansas City News
Posted: at 6:40 am
KANSAS CITY, Mo. A bill that would legalize sports betting in Missouri is headed to the Senate after House lawmakers approved the legislation.
If Missouri legalizes sports betting, it will join a list of other states that allow wagering on sports.
"My opinion, it's a little ridiculous that I can go to a casino and lose a thousand dollars playing blackjack. But I cant bet 50 bucks on the Chiefs to win," Missouri Sen. John Rizzo, who represents Independence, said.
The bill would allow people to bet on professional and college sports.
Wagers would be taxed 8% and would bring the state nearly $10 million annually according to a fiscal analysis.
"We have I believe around 30 states that have legalized some sort of sports book," Sen. Denny Hoskins, who represents Warrensburg said. "Im hopeful that Missouri will do the same this year."
When the approved House bill arrives in the Senate for consideration, senators will also have another sports wagering bill to consider.
Hoskins has introduced a bill where the main difference is in the tax rate. The House version has a tax rate at 8%. Hoskins' bill has a tax rate at 21%.
Theres a lot of things in the House bill I think are good, I think its a good starting point. But I believe that tax rate of 8%, I mean basically were just giving away money to the casinos which in my opinion are already profitable," Hoskins said. "So, there would have to be some movement on that tax rate as well as the problem gambling portion."
Hoskins added he wants more money dedicated to gambling addiction help.
He said if changes are made to the House version, he would be able to support it if his bill fails.
"We're the Show me state. We like to be shown what other states are doing first before we pass it, and we want to make sure that we have a great bill. Not just a good bill," he said.
Missouri's major sports teams are supporting the House bill including the Chiefs, Royals and Current.

5 Worst Casino Movies Of All Time – Film Threat
Posted: at 6:40 am
The casino film is one of the classics it can bring a rollercoaster of emotion, high stakes and lots of loot up for grabs. This is a great little cocktail for an incredible movie and some casino based films like Casino Royale, Rounders or Casino stay with you for years after viewing. Whilst all based around gambling and casinos, the films are done in a masterful way.
Whilst youre playing away at the tables or placing your bets on your favourite sports with sites such as Odds Index, when it comes to gambling it can be hard to step away if youre on a hot streak of wins. But it can do a world of good to take a step back every now and again, getting some rest and rejuvenation.
During this downtime, it could be an idea to watch a few movies heck, even casino movies if youre in the mood. Whilst you may have a good clue as to what casino movies to watch What about the ones to avoid?
Below is a list of movies that are considered really bad when it comes to the bar that is set by other gambling and casino related movies.
Whilst you wouldnt exactly expect Oscar level film making from a Paul Blart film the sequel to the tepidly received original Paul Blart: Mall Cop is one of the worst-rated films on Rotten Tomatoes, coming in at a measly 5% rating.
With Kevin James reprising his role, the action takes place in a casino. In this case, its the Wynn Las Vegas. How they agreed to put their name to this movie is a mystery. The plot is incredibly loose and goofy and the film doesnt make anywhere near enough use of the real casino setting they have.
After watching this, you wont be surprised to find out that the film got nominated for Worst Actor, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Combo at the Raspberry Awards that year.
21 Was a film that had both an intriguing cast and high expectations. Based upon a best selling novel, Bringing Down The House, the film centres around the genius team from MIT that conquered the casinos in Las Vegas, specifically winning millions in the game of Blackjack. They used mathematically powered tactics to count cards and were incredibly good at doing so.
The film had a combination of heavyweight actors in the form of Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Spacey whilst also showcasing awesome relatively fresh new faces like Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess.
The main thing that puts people off of this film especially keen casino punters is the sheer glamorisation of the fact the team are on the verge of cheating their way to riches. This was a bit of a kick in the teeth to the people who have dedicated their lives to learning and playing Blackjack.
It also didnt help that the script was painfully dry a bit more detail in the script and a few polishing touches could have made this an enjoyable film.
Another casino film that had the potential to be quite good a promising cast including hit singer Justin Timberlake and A-lister Ben Affleck and a rather intriguing plot to boot. But the film sits at a whopping 9% on Rotten Tomatoes (to compare, the Robert Deniro classic Casino sits at 93%).
The plot is rather fantastical Timberlake plays an online gambler who believes something is up, so goes to confront the tycoon behind the site whos played by Ben Affleck. The plot beefs up a bit, with the government authorities getting involved and Timberlake having to outrun both sides of the law.
It does have a bit of action and some genuinely good ideas but Timberlake and Affleck have pretty much zero chemistry on the screen, dragging this film down to Rotten Tomatoes depths.
Whilst it may surprise you that an Oce4ans film made it onto the list, Oceans Twelve just couldnt live up to the bar that the first film had set, despite the returning all-star cast.
The biggest drawback of this sequel is the plot its ok at certain times of the film and then switches to being utterly disappointing. The film earned titles such as fluff, cheesy and even dull by some review outlets.
The lukewarm reception is a shame since you can tell pretty much every single one of the cast is having an absolute whale of a time
The National Lampoon franchise has cherished memories in many peoples memories. Chevy Chase and Beverly DAngely are staples of the film and two of the driving factors towards its success, along with a tight script and pacing.
But it seems that all of these things went out the window with Vegas Vacation as agreed upon by not just the general audience, but film reviews and critics alike.
Vegas Vacation sees the lovable Griswolds return again for yet another vacation. As the title of the film suggests, on this trip theyre off to the gambling Mecca of Las Vegas. As usual, the whole gang has individual mishaps and misadventures.
The opening of the movie starts off good but quickly falls off, with the running gag of Clark managing to lose a tonne of money on blackjack losing its steam much quicker than the film hoped it would. This is one of the many reasons the film is sitting at 13% on Rotten Tomatoes save yourself an hour and a half and skip this one.

From the tables to the bully pulpit – A former addict’s mission to combat problem gambling – ESPN
Posted: at 6:40 am
On a late afternoon in June 2018, Craig Carton is at a high-limit blackjack table in a casino just outside of Philadelphia.
The high-profile New York sports-talk host is fighting an internal battle between his ego and his soul. He needs to double down but doesn't have the cash in front of him.
Nine months earlier, Carton had been arrested by federal agents at his home and charged with fraud for his role in a concert ticket resale scheme, some of the proceeds from which he used to pay off gambling debts. He resigned from the No. 1 sports-talk show in New York City, "Boomer & Carton," on Sept. 13, 2017. His dream job was gone, and his freedom was in jeopardy.
Yet, even after spending two weeks at a gambling rehabilitation center, he was back at the blackjack table months later, debating his next move.
Carton knows the correct play for the hand he has just been dealt is to double down, but to do so, he'll need to race out to the parking lot and get the money he purposely left in his truck as a test of self-control. The advantage play for his life, however, is to step away from gambling altogether. Carton asks the dealer to pause the game and heads to get the money.
An hour later, he has lost it all and failed his own test, but he may have won the war within himself -- and that personal victory could help America's growing betting market tackle one of its most critical challenges.
"At that point, I was willing to admit to myself that I had a problem," Carton said during a series of recent interviews with ESPN conducted on Zoom. "That really started my journey of being able to tell you I have a problem, and those are two different things. Owning that I have a problem is one thing and then to be able to look another man in his face, eye-to-eye, and not care what you think of me ... honestly, that was the toughest hill for me to climb. Thankfully, I was able to climb it, because a lot of people don't."
Carton says he hasn't gambled since that afternoon blackjack session in June 2018. He was convicted of fraud in the spring of 2019, sentenced to 3 years in federal prison and required to pay $4.8 million in restitution to the victims of his crime. He was released from prison in June 2020 and back on the air with WFAN four months later.
Today, he's as brash as ever behind the microphone on his afternoon show, "Carton and Roberts," but off air, in his role as the face of sportsbook FanDuel's efforts to combat problem gambling, he's humble and contrite. He now has the loudest voice and biggest platform any problem gambler has ever had, a responsibility he takes seriously, and he is concerned for people.
"There will be thousands of more people that now have a gambling problem, because so many more people are betting," Carton said. "It's going to be a problem nationwide that I don't think a lot of states are ready for."
If you or anyone you know has a gambling problem, please call 1-800-522-4600 for help.
March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and as it and the NCAA tournament winds down, calls from sports bettors to problem gambling hotlines are on the rise.
Thirty states and the District of Columbia have legal betting markets, with the bulk of the wagering taking place online. Billions of dollars are flowing from bettors to bookmakers every month, with leagues, colleges, media outlets and state governments each receiving their cut. During a nine-day stretch in January, bettors put more than $600 million in play with online sportsbooks in New York. Experts believe a reckoning is coming, an inevitable tsunami of gambling addiction, and America isn't prepared.
According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, sports bettors are at least twice as likely to develop a gambling disorder compared to gamblers in general, especially when playing online. Studies have shown that problem gamblers also are more likely to attempt suicide or have suicidal thoughts than other types of addicts. Carton, who used to bet sports regularly, considered jumping off a ski lift to end his life when things were spiraling out of control, something he revealed in an HBO documentary about his collapse. A friend talked him off the ledge that day, and Carton is determined to help others before they get to that point.
"Gambling addiction is the only addiction that I know of where we use the word degenerate to describe us," Carton said. "There's a great amount of shame that comes with that."
Carton hopes the second chance he has been given shows other gambling addicts that life goes on. After all, his downward spiral played out on air while he was the co-host of "Boomer & Carton." During a decadelong run on the show, Carton talked openly about his blackjack prowess with his co-host, ex-NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason. Gambling and sports picks were a regular part of the show. But when news broke of Carton's arrest in September 2017, most everyone at the station was caught off guard.
"What I always remind people of is that Craig is a great performer," Chris Oliviero, senior vice president of market manager for Audacy New York said. "When the light went on at 6 o'clock every morning, no matter what was going on, the craziness in his personal life, he hid it. Lights went on, he started dancing."
Oliviero made the decision to bring Carton back to WFAN after his imprisonment. He visited and communicated with Carton regularly while he was locked up in a minimum-security federal prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and found his longtime friend to be contrite and accepting of his responsibility for his crime. Still, while Oliviero believed Carton deserved a second chance, he also knew there would be backlash, and there was.
"Some of the negative reaction was because his on-air persona is polarizing, and that's also what makes him successful," Oliviero said. "People who might just know the on-air persona might say that he doesn't deserve a second chance. But, again, that's based on his on-air persona. We know the truth."
Oliviero says Carton still brings the "high-and-tight fastball" during the afternoon show but also tends to be more thoughtful on stories where an athlete or public figure is accused of something where an addiction could be involved. Carton also no longer participates in segments featuring sports picks, but he knows that gambling remains a big part of any sports-talk show.
"What's weird about it is that I'm a huge proponent of this proliferation of legalization of gambling," Carton said. "I think it's great that we're taking it from the back alley and have made it mainstream. I think the more mainstream it is, the easier it becomes over time to talk about it. I think ultimately that will be a really good thing."
Oliviero says the real-life Carton, not his alter-ego, can be heard on his Saturday morning show, "Hi, My Name Is Craig," which features guests discussing their struggles with a gambling in a raw format. Carton says the Saturday show is in part him making good on a promise to a group of problem gamblers he met during a two-week stay at Algamus Gambling Recovery Center in Arizona.
"Craig didn't have to do that weekend show. He wasn't forced to do that weekend show," Oliviero said. "Some people think he was somehow forced to do that. No, he wasn't. He wanted to do it, and we wanted to do it. And the response we've gotten in phone calls, emails and letters from real people who need help has been eye-opening, no doubt, but it has also fueled us to do it more."
If you or anyone you know is depressed or having suicidal thoughts, please seek help or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
On Sept. 23, 2021, Carton was named as an ambassador for FanDuel's responsible gambling initiatives. He works directly with the sportsbook to help identify warning signs. He speaks to employees about how dangerous problem gambling can be for customers and their business itself. It's part of what FanDuel calls an "inside-out" approach to tackling problem gambling on its platform.
Carton is also producing content aimed at reaching problem gamblers that began appearing on FanDuel platforms in March. Ultimately, his goal, he says, is to humanize the addict. He knows there's a long way to go.
"It's the schoolteacher, the little league coach, the mailman, the sales guy ... we don't smell a certain way; we don't look a certain way, and that's why it's referred to as the hidden addiction," Carton said.
According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, funding for problem gambling services is dwarfed by the amounts dedicated to drug and alcohol addiction. Some states, including ones that have recently legalized sports betting, do not dedicate any tax revenue to problem gambling services.
Adam Warrington spent more than seven years working in the corporate social responsibility department of Anheuser-Busch. He's now in a similar role with FanDuel as the sportsbook's vice president of responsible gambling. He joined FanDuel shortly after Carton signed on as an ambassador for the company's responsible gambling efforts.
Like Carton, Warrington believes one of the biggest challenges the industry faces with problem gambling is erasing the stigma that still exists. He sees some similarities between the alcohol industry's efforts to normalize designated drivers and what is needed in the gambling industry when it comes to tackling addiction. He said it took years to destigmatize the use of designated drivers, but he hopes modern technology and Carton can speed up the process with humanizing problem gamblers.
"That would lead to destigmatizing those who have a problem with gambling, like other addictions," Warrington added.
It has been nearly four years since Carton's last blackjack session. The 51-year-old remembers the shame and anger he felt when he got up from the table and walked out to the blue Ford Raptor, which Esiason had given him as a gift, to go retrieve the money he left behind as a test of his self-control.
"I've beaten myself up a lot about the bad decisions I've made," Carton said. "And I've never wanted to use, for what I viewed for a long time as a cop-out, 'Well, it wasn't my fault, it's an addiction.'
"I think it can be both at the same time," he added. "Clearly, my brain is wired in a manner that I can't gamble responsibly. So I own that now, and I didn't own that at the very beginning of the whole process, and there's an ego aspect to that for sure."
Carton says he borrowed more than $30 million to gamble. At the peak of his addiction, he was playing upward of $20,000 a hand. He was a good card player, too. He knew the math behind the most advantageous decisions for every situation. Yet, he'd still endure wild swings, sometimes winning more than a million dollars only to lose it all back and more before he left the casino. His job was about the only thing that could get him to leave the table.
"If you want to see a gambling problem looks like, I played blackjack for nine minutes. Nine minutes," Carton said. "At 3:57 in the morning, I sat down. I walked out at 4:06. It was a nine-minute sit-down and I won $325,000 in nine minutes and walked out the door. I only left the table because I had to go to work. I look back at those stories, not to glorify it -- because it's ugly, disgusting and dirty -- but it's real."
In many ways, Carton's downfall, the second chance he has been given and the skepticism of his and the gambling industry's sincerity are reflective of the challenge the American betting market faces with problem gambling.
It's hard for those who are turned off by Carton's brash, flame-throwing on-air persona to believe he is remorseful and thoughtful about tackling problem gambling, just like it can be difficult for the general public to believe bookmaking businesses, which make their money from consumer losses, are serious about preventing people from betting more than they should. But some see value in bringing a fresh voice like Carton's into the problem gambling space.
"I've long called for more innovation in the space, and I think Craig is the perfect person to bring that in the space," Jamie Salsburg, a brand strategist who was a problem gambler, said. "I think the thing I'm most excited about is his voice. He's got a unique voice. He's going to be able to say things, do things that none of us have ever done before. Ultimately, the typical responsible gambling narrative and messaging has been around for 40 years and hasn't evolved; it hasn't changed. It's time."
Carton says he doesn't feel pressure knowing that he has the loudest voice and biggest platform any problem gambler has ever had, but he does feel obligated to do what he can to help prevent people from making the same mistakes he did.
"There's also shame involved in it, which is why it's so hard for so many problem gamblers to say they have a problem," Carton said. "That's the first step, and it is the hardest."
