AI and Robotics are already working in several healthcare establishments. Theyre carrying out tasks such as genetic testing, robotic surgery, cancer research, data collection, and more. In hospitals, there are times when multiple patients require instant medication or assistance. In such situations, the staff is usually in a hurry to assist the patient instead of carrying out other tasks. Hence, supplementary robots today are quickly taking care of tasks such as restocking, taking out the trash, and cleaning while the humans are spending more time with the patient. A great example of a supplementary robot would be the automated UV Light Disinfection Robot that goes into each hospital room and delivers a measured dose of UVC light to disinfect the targeted area. This robot also reduces significant pathogens in direct and shadowed areas.
Multiple robotic systems used in the worlds top hospitals today provide immense feasibility in carrying out more complex tasks at a rapid and accurate pace. Robots concrete focus and attentive robots further strengthen their core functionality and enable them to perform tasks with extreme precision. These robots are backed by AI that allows them to learn while performing tasks. Due to such traits of robots, their importance in a healthcare organization cannot be denied. As long as the software is correctly programmed within the robots, there are no chances of failure; however, human supervision is necessary. Its a fact that robots need continual checkups and maintenance to work properly; hence, human intervention is crucial for now.
The idea of remote treatment has been there for more than a decade now. The technology was initially halted due to poor network connectivity at the time of its implementation. However, further developments and experiments were conducted after the invention of 4G and 5G networks. Today, although human intervention is required in the remote treatment sector, machines can perform several complex tasks independently. Recently, the U.S. Department of Defense funded the research at Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburghs University to create a robotic trauma care system for treating soldiers. Another impressive technological marvel is the bot-pill that performs an endoscopy in a very comfortable way compared to other options. Generally, the bot takes pictures of your intestines as it travels through them, and you can eliminate it naturally.
The precise and accurate diagnostics of human health conditions is where AI truly shines. The AI detects patterns that are leading the patient towards various health conditions. It determines the patients current state by analyzing and studying the healthcare records and data. Tests so far have concluded that AI is capable of accurately diagnosing diseases in 87% of the cases. In contrast, health condition detection by humans had an 86% accuracy rate. This accuracy is further supported by the fact that Robots and AI can skim through thousands of cases instantly, looking for correlations between hundreds of variables. Moreover, IBM Watson, healthcare technology, has hit the 99% mark in diagnosing cancer. Hence, considering the percentages mentioned above, I pretty much assume that AI and Robotics can rival even the finest doctors of the world when it comes to diagnostics.
Robots can perform daily tasks and carry out several functions that are being performed by humans. For example, a robot can make a sick or elderly person/patient feel attended to all the time, minimizing the need for human presence. These robots are programmed to act as personal assistants. Moreover, robots can also engage patients in conversations, help them take their medicine on time by reminding them, and even perform a basic checkup on them to analyze their health from time to time. Some simple routine checkups may include evaluating the patients blood pressure, sugar levels, and temperature.
Additionally, the technology of robots engaged in the task mentioned above is based on AI and machine learning; hence, they continuously learn from their patients experiences. This learning further modifies their personality and sentiment analysis capabilities.
Some specific robots are designed to help the medical staff focus on other essential aspects of the hospital. These robots are helping patients by assisting them in walking or monitoring their health status. Before the dawn of AI and Robots, tasks such as helping a patient walk, assisting the patient for his/her checkup, taking the history of the patients illness were manual and time-consuming. However, today these tasks can be easily automated and quickly carried out by machines. Moreover, today, robots are helping humans with everything from minimally invasive procedures to complex open-heart surgeries. The technologies integrated within the machines like a built-in camera, mechanical arms, and surgical equipment provide more precision, flexibility, and control beyond human capabilities. The sensors in these bionic feet connect with the persons muscles and allow more mobility and stability. These sensors perfectly replicate human feet functioning and give the user more advantage over the original feet.

The two companies will demonstrate their joint solution at the ISC West trade show in the Las Vegas Convention Center, stand 20019, from March 22-25.
Todays announcement is the result of the strategic partnership announced in April 2021 where Halodi Robotics secured an investment from ADT Commercial to develop a robot to complement their physical security solutions.
Halodi Robotics believes that robots make workplaces better by performing tasks that are dirty, dangerous, and dull so that employees can prioritize functions where they create greater value. Honeywell partners with Otto Motors to develop robotic solutions for supply chain operations – Robotics and Automation News

Honeywell has agreed a strategic collaboration with Otto Motors, a division of Clearpath Robotics, giving warehouses and distribution centers throughout North America an automated option to handle some of the most labor-intensive roles in an increasingly scarce job market.
The collaboration enables Honeywell customers to increase efficiency, reduce errors and improve safety by deploying Otto autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) in their facilities.
These AMRs provide significant productivity benefits by automating the movement of carts used to transport picked orders or returns and can travel over any floor surface smooth enough to handle a traditional cart pushed by a worker.
Instead of spending more than half the day walking, workers can simply park carts in designated pickup locations throughout the facility and call robots to retrieve them.
These AMRs also offer a flexible and powerful way to transport pallets typically accomplished primarily with forklifts and conveyor systems.
Keith Fisher, president of Honeywell Intelligrated, says: Supply chains continue to be stressed by staffing shortages and consumer demands driving expectations of speedy and accurate fulfillment.
Tackling the more dynamic, unstructured environments of todays distribution centers calls for more sophisticated robots, and Ottos AMRs have been proven to be deployed and adapted quickly to changing market conditions or peak buying seasons.
Ottos easy-to-install AMRs are smart enough to interact safely with human co-workers and other vehicles, find a different route if their original path is blocked, and respond to rapid changes in orders or logistics needs all without human intervention.
Otto AMRs can work in conjunction with Honeywell automated solutions including its Smart Flexible Depalletizer and next-gen AS/RS system, further increasing efficiency and automation within the warehouse.

The pandemic and its lasting effects on labor shortages is causing companies to reconsider the way they operate. A Honeywell study revealed more than half of companies are more willing to invest in automation because of the pandemic and its lasting effects.
The same study showed companies see increased speed of tasks, greater productivity and increased employee utilization and productivity as the top three potential benefits from automation.
Robot sales in North America had the strongest year ever in 2021 as more industries look to automation to increase productivity and alleviate ongoing labor shortages, according to the Association for Advancing Automation.
The industry association revealed that, while companies are expanding their applications of robotics and automation throughout their facilities, many first-time users are increasingly turning to robotics to stay productive and competitive.

Freedom of speech, as provided for in the First Amendment, is the cornerstone of our constitutional democracy. Its meaning and crucial importance to a free society have been and continue to be misunderstood and not sufficiently respected.
The First Amendment limits the power of any government agency to violate the right to generally express oneself, regardless of the content of the view or whether its offensive, politically incorrect or wrong. That means the government is prohibited from determining which views are permitted and which are not.
But the First Amendment does not limit the power of private, nongovernment actors. The private sector, including newspapers, private universities and businesses, have their own rights to free speech but sometimes improperly repress or punish the speech of their employees. The private sector should be encouraged to develop and enforce free expression policies that allow individuals in their employ to express views that are not job-related without fear of retaliation.
Historically, the struggle to achieve justice (e.g., civil rights, womens rights, the labor movement, L.G.B.T.Q.+) has always depended on the right to free speech. As John Lewis said, Without freedom of speech and the right to dissent, the civil rights movement would have been a bird without wings.

England’s campus free speech bill stalls – Times Higher Education

Controversial legislation on free speech on English campuses has stalled in Parliament due to dwindling political support, some in the sector suggest, although the bills supporters and the Department for Education insist ministers remain committed to new laws.
The Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill had its first reading in the House of Commons in May 2021. Committee stage for the bill concluded in September 2021, but there is still no date for the report stage to start, and the bill is still to be introduced to the House of Lords.
Following the recent announcement that the next session of Parliament will begin on 10 May, the bill, a Tory manifesto commitment, appears to have run out of time in the current parliamentary session. At the end of the 2019-21 session,five bills were carried over so there is technical scope for the bill to continue.For that to happen, a carry-over motion would need to be tabled and approved by the Commons before the end of the current session.
Universitiesarenervous about the potential impact of some of the bills provisions, which include the appointment of a free speech and academic freedom champion to the Office for Students board and enabling individuals to sue institutions for compensation over breaches of strengthened free speech duties.
One factor potentially impacting the bill is Gavin Williamsons sacking as education secretary and replacement by Nadhim Zahawi in September. That left Mr Williamsons former special adviser Iain Mansfield, the chief architect of the free speech bill, with a less influential DfE role as adviser to higher education minister Michelle Donelan.
Meanwhile, Munira Mirza, the former Spiked writer and critic of activist academics, resigned as head of policy in No 10 in February.
Diana Beech, chief executive of London Higher and a former policy adviser to Conservative universities ministers, said it was no surprise that the free speech bill has fallen down the list of the governments priorities and Ms Mirzas exit has left the bill without an obvious champion in the corridors of power.
Other issues on the DfE agenda such as lifelong loans ought to be seen as more of a vote winner than any measures reigniting accusations of culture wars for a government heading into a general election in just two years time, she added.
However, Nigel Biggar, Regius professor of moral and pastoral theology at the University of Oxford, chair of the Free Speech Union and a prominent advocate for the bill, said: The current stalling of the bill in the House of Commons is regrettable, but sources confirm that the government is committed to revive it in the autumn. It is vital for the promotion of liberal space on campus that it should.
Amid the failure of university authorities to defend staff against vexatious complaints, as well as the authoritarian rolling out of decolonisation policies, the bill would strengthen the arm of dissidents, he added.
A DfE spokesman said: The government remains committed to strengthening freedom of speech in higher education in line with its manifesto and passage of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill will continue as soon as parliamentary time allows.
Nick Hillman, Higher Education Policy Institute director, said the bill does seem to have lost some of its momentum since Mr Williamsons exit. But he noted that Ms Donelan still talks about it, as in herspeech to the Conservative party spring conferencethis month.
So I wouldnt write its obituary yet, Mr Hillman said.

Re Self-Censorship Is Stifling Campuses, by Emma Camp (Opinion guest essay, March 9):
I applaud Ms. Camps essay about the state of intellectual freedom (or the lack thereof) on college campuses in this country.
She accurately and perceptively criticizes the growing trend in academia to promote and enforce an inflexible social ideology that intimidates any student or professor who does not embrace it.
Colleges and universities, instead of being a fertile environment to question, learn and grow, are now teaching our children to be intolerant and judgmental, and to humiliate any who might disagree with the official perspective. And if you happen to be a professor who challenges this dogma, you face disgrace or even termination.
It is a sad state of affairs when our institutions of higher learning are embracing such a biased and disparaging environment that their students feel the need to censor their own thoughts and expressions on campus.
Zealotry serves no one well, regardless of where one sits on the political spectrum.

I am exceedingly grateful to Emma Camp for expressing an unpopular opinion that must necessarily be harbored (cautiously, on the sly) by countless undergraduate and graduate students. The pressure to bow before majority opinion has indeed become increasingly burdensome.
We might well fear for the state of unbounded, undiluted intellectualism in America. Not only self-censorship, but also censorship from without coercion, intimidation and silencing threatens to transform our once eclectic nation into a tepid, homogeneous whole.
I implore my fellow students to comport themselves boldly and courageously in the face of this ever more fearful prospect. Do not permit your original, piquant ideas and opinions to be rejected out of hand; when enough iconoclasts stand bravely together, tyranny of the majority loses power. One grows tired of hearing the same hyperbolized viewpoints iterated and reiterated ad nauseam.
Collectively, let us attempt to provide balance and restore our fellow citizens to reason and open-mindedness.

I welcome Emma Camps plea for free speech, but it is important to remember that pressures to censor come from the political right as well as from the left.
With Floridas lawmakers passing a bill that forbids teaching about gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through third grade, teachers and even young children will find they must suppress expression of any comments that offend conservative orthodoxy.
This leads to the stifling of alternative viewpoints, producing what public opinion scholars call a spiral of silence, a phenomenon in which people, fearing isolation or ostracism, decline to offer unpopular but legitimate views, spanning conservative political perspectives in University of Virginia classrooms to gender diversity in Florida elementary schools.
The ensuing silence and self-censorship offend the Enlightenment-based affirmation of free speech and tolerance that animated our greatest social philosophers.
As John Stuart Mill famously wrote, discussing problems bearing on opinion self-censorship, If the opinion is right, [people] are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.

Emma Camp describes experiencing a shift in the demeanor of other students when she raised issues that were disliked. I would hope that in such a situation the professor would say something like: I notice some discomfort with Ms. Camps position. Will one of you please respond. Come on. Speak up!
Then the professor should alternate between sides, commenting as appropriate to bring out the lessons to be learned. I would hope for a parallel reaction from the president and deans with the faculty in times of dissent.
The student newspaper could contribute by publishing both sides: pro on one side of the page and con on the other side. It is the responsibility of the faculty to keep the college safe for debate by encouraging and monitoring the process to keep discussions flowing and nondestructive.

As a lifelong teacher of argumentation and debating, I find myself in agreement with the frustration Emma Camp feels but disagree with the causes. Debate does not come naturally; it is something we have to practice and learn.
Human beings argue as a form of communication, but this is highly personal in its reach. Debate is for people we dont know. We can appreciate a beautiful image with others, but to paint it and hang it before a crowd is a different matter.
Universities across the United States have failed in their obligation to teach debating, which is as important as STEM in creating the thoughtful, intelligent people who will soon lead the world. Debate should be a general education requirement, as Ms. Camp aptly proves.

Emma Camp provides a clear description of one consequence of the recent culture wars and the passage of anti-woke legislation in multiple states, including mine.
What is also evident is that some professors lack the skill to conduct conversations that give all students space to express their views. Such classroom interaction is how we help students become analytical thinkers, develop appreciation for diverse perspectives and understand the complexity of so many issues.
Instead of letting students pile on one student and triggering self-censorship, educators at all levels need to give students opportunities to carefully consider alternative ideas and possible explanations for them. This is how we learn, how we mature and become effective decision makers.

Her discussion about self-censorship by college students and faculty resonates with me; college administrators must ensure that no one on campus must adhere to any particular ideology for fear of retribution.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) New Zealands government on Thursday said it will end its quarantine requirements for incoming travelers and reopen its borders, a change welcomed by thousands of citizens abroad who have endured long waits to return home.
Since the start of the pandemic, New Zealand has enacted some of the worlds strictest border controls. Most incoming travelers need to spend 10 days in a quarantine hotel room run by the military, a requirement that has created a bottleneck at the border.
The measures were initially credited with saving thousands of lives and allowed New Zealand to eliminate or control several outbreaks of the coronavirus.
But, increasingly, the border controls have been viewed as out-of-step in a world where the virus is becoming endemic, and in a country where the omicron variant is already spreading. The bottleneck forced many New Zealanders abroad to enter a lottery-style system to try and secure a spot in quarantine and passage home.
The shortcomings of the system were highlighted over the past week by pregnant New Zealand journalist Charlotte Bellis, who was stranded in Afghanistan after New Zealand officials initially rejected her application to return home to give birth. After international publicity, officials backed down and offered her a spot in quarantine, which she has accepted.
The border changes mean that vaccinated New Zealanders returning from Australia will no longer need to go into quarantine from the end of this month, and vaccinated New Zealanders returning from the rest of the world can skip quarantine by mid-March. They will still be required to isolate at home.
However, most tourists will need to wait until October before they can enter the country without a quarantine stay. And anybody who isnt vaccinated will still be required to go through quarantine.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she knows many people associate the border controls with heartache but they have undeniably saved lives.
There is no question that for New Zealand, it has been one of the hardest parts of the pandemic, she said. But the reason that it is right up there as one of the toughest things we have experienced is, in part, because large-scale loss of life is not.
She said the controls meant not everyone could come home when they wanted to. But it also meant that COVID could not come in when it wanted to, either.
Ardern said the restrictions had allowed New Zealand to build its defenses against the virus by achieving high levels of vaccination while also keeping the economy running strongly.
About 77% of New Zealanders are fully vaccinated, according to Our World in Data. That rises to 93% among those aged 12 and over, according to health officials.
New Zealand has reported just 53 virus deaths among its population of 5 million.
New Zealands economy did return to growth quickly after a pandemic dip, and unemployment decreased to 3.2% in the latest quarter, the lowest level since record-keeping began in 1986. But the government has also increased borrowing sharply and home prices have skyrocketed.
Opposition leader Christopher Luxon said the reopening of the border was welcome news, and his National Party had long called for the government to end the lottery of human misery.
Ardern said it was a first step toward normality.
There was life before, and now life with COVID, but that also means there will be life after COVID too, a life where we have adapted, where we have some normality back, and where the weather can once again take its rightful place as our primary topic of conversation, Ardern said. We are well on our way to reaching that destination. Were just not quite there yet.
