Tech billionaire Elon Musk-led SpaceX launched 646 Starlink satellites in 2021, marking a 48.9% increase in its March 2021 satellite population of 1,322, according to a report.

In the past 18 months, the space firm has grown its broadband satellites by 185%, revealed data analysis by financial educational hub StockApps.com

It targets up to 60 million rural and far-flung American populations. Globally, it has set sights on areas with poor broadband connections.

"The increase in Starlink satellites brings more areas under internet coverage. Now more areas that have lacked access before will be able to tap into high-speed and reliable internet. The implications can only be mind-blowing," Edith Reads, a fintech expert, wrote in a blogpost on StockApps.com.

The core of the SpaceX Starlink internet project is a low latency broadband system tailored for global consumer needs.

A collection of low orbiting Earth satellites will support Starlink in providing fast and dependable data where there's poor to zero connectivity.

Starlink's most recent application has been in Ukraine. The system has enabled the besieged country to continue accessing the net as it battles a Russian invasion.

Starlink is currently approved to expand its constellation to 12,000 satellites, though SpaceX has applied to launch a further 30,000.

Elon Musk and a Top Chinese Diplomat Take a Ride – TheStreet

Posted: at 10:45 pm

Elon Musk took the suit out of his wardrobe for the occasion.

It's a sign, if there was any doubt, that this road trip is not like the others.

The billionaire, installed in the passenger seat of the car, wears a black suit and a black tie over a white shirt.

His neighbor who occupies the driver's seat also wears a dark suit but a little lighter than Musk's. He also wears a tie over a blue shirt and glasses.

The two men appear to be deep in conversation, the subject of which appears to be the capabilities of the car, a Tesla (TSLA) - Get Tesla Inc ReportS Plaid sedan.

Except that the passenger is not an average driver.

He is Qin Gang, the Chinese ambassador to the United States. It is also the diplomat who shared photos of this car trip between the two men on his Twitter account.

The trip took place on March 4.

The diplomat does not give any information on the route and the duration of this road trip.

"Had an inspiring talk with @elonmusk today on cars on the road, stars in the sky, research of human brain, meaning of life on earth and our future into the space," Qin Gang wrote. "Look up and think beyond."

In a second tweet, the diplomat gives his impression of this car trip, which he seems to have greatly appreciated.

"Took a ride in a @Tesla Model S Plaid on #autopilot. Powerful model, but smooth ride!"

The road trip between the two men reflects the closeness between Tesla, Elon Musk and China.

Musk, who has an extremely cold relationship with U.S. President Joe Biden, does not hide his ties with the Chinese authorities.

China is a crucial market for the manufacturer of luxury electric vehicles.

The company's Gigafactory in Shanghai has become the epicenter of the production of the Model 3 and Y, the entry-level sedan and SUV from which the American company, that wants to move its headquarters from California to Austin, Texas, hopes to conquer the world.

Tesla aims to at least double its production capacity in this factory which can currently produce roughly 850,000 cars per year.

Last year, more than half of the 936,172 cars delivered by Tesla worldwide were produced in Shanghai.

The Chinese authorities have reserved special treatment for Tesla.

The automaker is one of the few foreign vehicle manufacturers that Beijing did not require to form a joint venture to enter the Chinese market.

This free pass allowed Tesla to take advantage of tax credits, cheap land and low-interest loans granted in particular by Beijing to encourage the population to embrace electric vehicles, while other cities in the country have pollution rates among the highest in the world

From Volkswagen (VLKAF) to GM (GM) - Get General Motors Company Report, most automotive groups wishing to sell or produce cars in China have been forced to enter into partnerships with local players.

Musk's relationship with China is complicated, however.

The billionaire has been under pressure since China urges foreign companies to keep all data collected on their local customers in the country.

Tesla must also seek the green light from the authorities before making updates to certain software in its cars in China.

In an attempt to soften the authorities, Musk does not hesitate to sing their praises.

"The economic prosperity that China has achieved is truly amazing, especially in infrastructure! I encourage people to visit and see for themselves," he wrote on June 30 to his millions of followers on Twitter.

This did not prevent China from accusing SpaceX, another company founded by Musk, of threatening the safety of Chinas space station with its satellites.

The accusation made last December concluded an already turbulent year for Musk in the most populous country in the world.

Last spring, protesters claiming that Tesla cars were posed a danger to consumers attempted to block entry to the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition.

In June, Tesla had to recall 300,000 Model 3 and Model Y cars due to a technical glitch.

Partner Content | How clean-tech entrepreneur Amanda Hall works to beat the odds – Toronto Star

Posted: at 10:41 pm

When Amanda Hall started working in the oil and gas sector in Alberta more than 15 years ago, she resolved to dig into the messy bits.

I remember saying to myself, I want to get neck-deep in the problems so I can be part of the solutions in the energy sector, says Hall. That determination often saw the geophysicist ask questions the industry wasnt prepared to ask itself often to the dismay of her colleagues.

I remember saying, hey, youre not really considering renewables or EV forecasting. People around the room turned and looked at me like, what the hell did you just say?

Undeterred by what she saw as wilful blindness about the accelerating pace of electric vehicle technology and renewables, Hall started to think about how she could get involved. I knew that the future was not going to be like the past and I wanted to leverage it.

She quit her job with a big oil and gas producer and, in 2018, founded Summit Nanotech, which has developed a more sustainable method of extracting lithium were an upgrader, explains Hall. We get raw product, update it to battery grade, then give it back to the customer and they sell it to the market.

Summits technology reduces climate pollution, minimizes the use of fresh water and chemicals, and cuts waste by 90 per cent compared to traditional methods. The company has just initiated its first pilot project in Chile, the first step in commercialization. Halls idea and her commitment to bringing it to market saw her win the 2021 Women in Cleantech Challenge.

Here, she talks about raising money, why the boss should always be in the weeds, and how she forged a future for herself in line with the necessity of a clean energy future.

You worked in oil and gas for well over a decade. What made you turn your attention to renewables?

In 2017, I went on a trip to Tibet, and I was in a monastery at the top of a mountain, and I saw a monk pull a cellphone out of his robe. I couldnt get that image out of my head, and the whole notion of lithium-ion batteries being everywhere on the planet. It opened my eyes to the tidal wave of demand that was coming.

How important was it for you to innovate a more sustainable method for lithium extraction?

Very. I thought about the future: what should we be doing the right way? And I made sure that our technology operated under those thresholds rather than under existing regulations. Were not just complying with existing regulatory standards; we are blowing them out of the water so that we are future-proofing our own operations.

When Im marketing our technology to mining companies, one of the first things they say to us is, How much fresh water do you use? And when I say none, theyre like What? We designed the technology not to use fresh water and to them thats like music to their ears because they have so many issues with fresh water.

You were working full-time when you came up with the idea for Summit. How did you manage to find the time to come up with a new technology after hours?

I think its because I was single at the time! I had nothing better to do. My Friday nights werent going out, they were sitting on the couch with a blank piece of paper and thinking, how do I want to change the future? I was divorced and my kids were 17, 19 and 21 at the time, and in that selfish phase of growth where they dont care what their mom is doing. There was a power just in being single and focusing on myself and not diluting myself.

Back then I didnt know I wanted to do lithium. I knew I wanted to do something in the nanotech space because it was so fascinating to me. Im a geophysicist with a biology degree. I never studied nanotechnology, but I taught myself. I literally sat with scientific journals and articles just reading and reading and reading. I landed on lithium as the future of energy and a nano material that I thought could do a better job extracting than what was already out there.

In earlier interviews youve talked about some of the challenges of being a working mother. Did those challenges also spur your entrepreneurial endeavours?

I hated being nine-to-five downtown. One of my three daughters went through a really difficult phase of depression and anxiety, and going to work every day was torture because I didnt know how she would cope throughout the day. When I started this company, I wanted it to be different. My staff knows that they can work from home any time even before COVID. Family First is my number 1 corporate credo. The hierarchy of my company is inverted: Im the bottom of the pyramid supporting everyone above me because they need my support to succeed. We dont report up, we report down.

You turned down $10 million from a U.S. investor, which is a bold move for a startup. Why?

The partnership just felt wrong and thats when the prize money from the Women in Cleantech Challenge showed up. I was able to boldly say no to an investment and keep looking for a better one. I ended up landing three huge international giants after that and I couldnt have done that without the prize money. It kept us from being in a stressful position where I would have had to take any deal, and instead I got to wait until the right deal came to the table.

How much of your job is raising money?

Its probably 50 per cent of my day. I closed the Series A funding round and within two weeks I was talking to Series B investors about a $100-million round because I knew I had to start socializing that concept as soon as possible.

I closed the round with a $36-million post-money valuation, and I turned around and said, now Im worth $200 million pre-money and everyone was like Oh, really?! But thats the boldness you need when youre in this phase.

You go month-to-month, and your valuations rise by hundreds of millions of dollars just by continuing to push the tech, the patents, the leverage, the partnerships, the customers. I remember my mentor saying to me, Be bold. It was almost like it gave me permission to step out of my comfort zone and just do it. I havent stopped since that day. Boldness is just part of my daily agenda.

How do you solicit funding and maintain your vision?

So many people say the CEO shouldnt be involved with the technology development or the business development or the operations. Im the exact opposite. Im in the labs, Im in the pilot unit operating, Im in the meetings with customers. I think that makes me a better advocate and ambassador of what my company is doing when I go out to raise capital.

For me, the secret of success has been staying in the weeds with my team and not getting too esoteric and losing the grounding of what my company is doing on a day-to-day basis.

Do you think women in this sector face greater challenges than men?

I dont think its any different for women from a day-to-day perspective, but the track record isnt there for us to be successful. In 2021, two per cent of venture capital went to women. Two per cent! Thats a horrible statistic. From a statistics perspective when I walk into a room and pitch to investors, I know theres a 98 per cent probability that they wont give the money to me.

Im fighting against the odds every single day. Im beating the odds, but I dont let being female hinder anything I do. Whether Im talking to mining companies in South America or investors in Silicon Valley, I show up as a knowledgeable, credible experienced scientist. Gender just doesnt even matter.

It sounds like those dismal investment statistics for female innovators bolster you in way

It does. It lights my fire. It makes me work harder. I know I have something to prove. I have to prove to the world that women can do this.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

California man arrested after DNA from bite wound helps solve 1994 murder of mother of three – CBS News

Posted: at 10:40 pm

A California man has been arrested and charged in the 1994 murder of a mother of three thanks in part to DNA retrieved from bite wounds on the victim, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin announced Tuesday. Cheri Huss was found stabbed to death and bitten by her killer inside her Desert Hot Springs apartment 28 years ago.

Sharron Eugene Gadlin, 48, was pulled over while he was driving in Gardena and arrested on Friday. He is being held in Riverside's Southwest Detention Center on $1 million bail.

"I hope Cheri and her family will finally get the justice they deserve and have waited so long for," Hestrin said in a statement.

According to the District Attorney's Office, Huss was found stabbed multiple times and was bitten by her killer on April 24, 1994. Homicide investigators determined she fought off her attacker, and blood left at the scene was determined to be male and matched the DNA of the saliva in Huss' bite wounds.

The case was cold for nearly 28 years, until forensic genetic genealogy identified Gadlin as a person of interest last month, district attorney's officials said. Further investigation determined Gadlin lived in Thousand Palms in 1994, about 12 miles from where Huss was found murdered.

Cold case investigators got a warrant to get a saliva sample from Gadlin on Feb. 14. The state Department of Justice lab determined the sample from Gadlin matched the DNA profile of the man who killed and bit Huss, prosecutors said.

Gadlin was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Prevent the use of victim DNA by the police – Daily Breeze

Posted: at 10:40 pm

State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, has introduced legislation to prohibit law enforcement agencies from using the DNA of victims collected from rape kits for use to investigate separate crimes.

That is a sensible proposal and should be implemented statewide to make sure it never happens anywhere ever again.

There are so many barriers to survivors coming forward, Wiener tweeted on Monday, announcing his introduction of the proposal through Senate Bill 1228. If survivors believe their DNA may be used against them, its just one more barrier.

The proposal follows a recent incident out of San Francisco in which the police department, using DNA from a 2016 rape kit, linked the DNA of the victim to an unrelated property crime.

USA Todays Tami Abdollah has subsequently reported that the police departments crime lab was not only storing sexual assault victims DNA through the last seven years, the department was also routinely searching suspect DNA for matches against DNA belonging to victims of other crimes, including children, as well as volunteers like consensual sexual partners who provided DNA to help isolate a suspects DNA in a rape case. All matches were reported to police investigators.

Though San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin wisely declined to prosecute the individual whose case brought all of this to light, it is troubling that law enforcement departments could end up in this situation.

Victims of sexual assault should be encouraged and supported in coming forward to undergo sexual assault examinations to identify their perpetrator, Boudin said in a statement. Instead, the practice by a police crime lab that my office exposed treats victims like criminals. It not only violates their privacy, but it dissuades victims from reporting sexual violence which makes us all less safe.

Thats right.

While police investigators may want to have access to as much information as they can potentially get to help them solve crimes, there are rules and processes in place to protect civil liberties and to avoid discouraging victims of crimes from engaging with law enforcement as well.

San Franciscos police chief has vowed to not allow victim DNA to be used to investigate unrelated crimes.

It doesnt matter what case it is, if its a serial killer, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott told USA Today. No victim information will be shared with investigators. Im not a scientist but I know what direction I gave. I know what confirmation I gave to my lab people, the chief of investigation is very clear, that its not to be done.

But according to USA Today, the departments policies are written in a way that could in fact allow the practice to continue, just with less transparency.

Hence, a clearly and directly written state law to prohibit the practive to take this option out of the hands of police departments is in order.

Blood type and DNA difference could increase risk of severe Covid, research finds – NationalWorld

Posted: at 10:40 pm

Two new studies have looked into why some people are more seriously ill from Covid than others

Differences in DNA could explain why some people are more seriously ill from Covid, researchers have found.

A new study, published in the Nature Journal, identified 16 new genetic variants - differences in DNA - associated with severe coronavirus, including some related to blood clotting, immune response and inflammation.

One genetic variant was found to be slower at signalling to the immune system that cells are under attack from the virus.

Having just one of the 16 genes could be the difference between getting a mild cough or being admitted to intensive care, according to researchers.

What did researchers find?

The government-funded study, which is the largest of its kind, saw researchers from the GenOMICC consortium, led by experts at the University of Edinburgh, assess the genes of more than 57,000 people across the UK, including 7,941 Covid patients from 224 intensive care units.

Researchers from the GenOMICC consortium a global collaboration to study genetics in critical illness led by University of Edinburgh in partnership with Genomics England, assessed the genes of more than 57,000 people across the UK.

They sequencing the genomes of 7,491 patients from 224 intensive care units and compared their DNA with 48,400 other people who had not had coronavirus, and 1,630 people who had experienced mild Covid.

Key differences in 16 genes were found among intensive care patients.

The findings included how a single gene variant was enough to increase a patients risk of severe disease.

One gene variant, called interferon alpha-10, was found to be less effective in signalling to the bodys immune system that cells were under attack from a virus and people with this gene were more likely to die from Covid.

Another variant, called Factor 8, is linked to the blood clotting disorder haemophilia and was also found in severely ill patients.

Experts say the findings could help to reveal a persons risk from various diseases, such as Covid, and suggest a specific treatment may help manage disease in the early stages.

Professor Kenneth Baillie, the projects chief investigator and a consultant in critical care medicine at University of Edinburgh, said: These results explain why some people develop life-threatening Covid-19, while others get no symptoms at all.

But more importantly, this gives us a deep understanding of the process of disease and is a big step forward in finding more effective treatments.

It is now true to say that we understand the mechanisms of Covid better than the other syndromes we treat in intensive care in normal times sepsis, flu, and other forms of critical illness.

Covid-19 is showing us the way to tackle those problems in the future.

Researchers say that not everyone will have all of the DNA changes they identified, meaning some people will have a greater or lesser tendency to have severe outcomes.

Professor Sir Mark Caulfield from Queen Mary University of London, formerly chief scientist at Genomics England and co-author on the study, explained: Through our whole genome sequencing research, weve discovered novel gene variants that predispose people to severe illness which now offer a route to new tests and treatments, to help protect the public and the NHS from this virus.

I think what we can say today is that these variants do denote people that are more likely to have a critical illness.

And if we knew about them earlier in the course of their illness, we might be able to consider early intervention with some of the medicines weve been talking about, such as dexamethasone or others to try and prevent an adverse outcome.

Can blood type influence the risk of severe Covid?

Another study, published in The Conversation, suggests that proteins in the blood could be another biological factor that increases the risk of suffering severe disease from Covid.

Some proteins help the body to defend against viruses, while others transport molecules around the body and distribute information.

The study claims that through these functions, blood proteins can impact the severity of coronavirus.

As everyone has different amounts of these proteins in their body, this could explain why some people only develop a runny nose from Covid, while others require intensive care, and in the severest cases, some may die.

Researchers from Kings College London and the Medical University of Vienna assessed more than 3,000 blood proteins using a technique called Mendelian randomisation, which looks at variation in genes and its influence on disease outcomes.

Findings revealed several proteins that potentially increase or decrease the risk of severe Covid.

Increased levels of one protein, called FAAH2, was found to heighten the risk of someone needing hospital treatment for coronavirus, as it causes cells to absorb and inactivate substances called endocannabinoids, which have anti-inflammatory effects.

Having more of these proteins that remove them could be problematic as it potentially lessens the bodys ability to control inflammation caused by Covid.

Another protein identified was the ABO enzyme, which determines your blood group.

The study found that having higher levels of this enzyme appears to increase the risk of hospitalisation from Covid and subsequently needing intensive care.

Previous studies have shown that blood group A is more common in those with severe Covid and this study strengthens the case that the ABO enzyme and blood type influence coronavirus severity.

It was also found that Covid can cause disease in the blood vessels, especially when severe, but proteins that attract white blood cells to the wall of blood vessels can help to protect against this and help fight off infection.

Researchers said: Identifying these risk factors may help scientists develop new treatments, as these proteins could be targeted by new medicines - or existing ones that have been repurposed.

It has also allowed us to draw up a list of proteins that can be prioritised by other researchers, so that in future we can understand even more about what the biological risk factors for Covid are.
