How has Brexit shaped a new all-Ireland food sector? – The Grocer

Posted: March 3, 2022 at 12:11 am

Official Irish data for 2021 showed a surge in all-Ireland trade, with food and drink central to the spike in island-wide commerce recorded in the wake of the UK-EU post-Brexit trade deal.

Dublins Central Statistics Office (CSO) last month reported around 8bn (6.7bn) in total all-Ireland goods trade for last year, after both imports from and exports to Northern Ireland jumped by over 50% compared to 2020.

So whats been driving this surge in all-Ireland trade?

Irelands food and live animal imports from across the border climbed to just over 1bn (830m) from 2020s 714m figure, while exports jumped by a roughly equivalent amount to over 1.3bn.

At the same time, Irelands food and animal imports from Great Britain fell by over1bn to around 2bn, while exports dropped by around 300m similar to the rises reported for Northern Ireland.

We have seen a number of changes in our business relating to Brexit and the changed trading relationship between Ireland and the UK, said Conor Whelan, MD of Stafford Lynch, which includes Schwartz, San Pellegrino, John West, Tonys Chocolonely and Kikkoman among the brands it distributes in Ireland.

This has included more activity across the border, but also changes to how brand owners manage their supply chain into Ireland, and how retailers source product, Whelan said.

John West last year said it would ship directly to Ireland as a result of Brexit, bypassing a previously-used route via Britain, while Northern Ireland-based brands such as Finnebrogue, Mash Direct and Whites Oats have landed additional supply deals with retailers across Ireland.

And according to Michael Haverty, partner and senior research consultant at The Andersons Centre, overall, agri-food trade on the island of Ireland is up by around 42% in 2021 versus 2020, a definite shift, and the [Northern Ireland] protocol is a key influence.

The protocol to the UKs post-Brexit deal with the EU meant Northern Ireland stayed legally part of the customs territory of the UK, in the CSOs reading, but effectively remain[ed] within the EU single market for the movement of goods.

The deal in turn created an impetus for people to ask can this be sourced more locally?, according to Haverty.

Paul Kelly, director of Food Drink Ireland, part of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (Ibec), said the percentages would suggest theres a huge increase [in food trade] across the border in both directions.

Conor Mulvihill, director of Dairy Industry Ireland, also part of Ibec, added the protocol has encouraged companies to invest in the all-island supply chain, particularly Northern Irish companies.

In December, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), a state-funded thinktank in Dublin, described the increase in all-island trade as significant and likely explained by changes to supply chains, be it as a result of substitution by Irish and UK firms or firms redirecting trade through Northern Ireland, as well as more accurate reporting of Northern Ireland trade by UK firms since Brexit.

Border checks

As EU member state Ireland joined the rest of the bloc last year in implementing checks on British goods as part of the UKs post-Brexit deal with Brussels, Irish goods imports from Great Britain fell by almost 2.4bn as imports from Northern Ireland surged to the tune of around 1.6bn.

But at least some of the reported numeric increase in all-Ireland commerce could be a result of honing reporting requirements after Northern Ireland acquired its post-Brexit foot-in-both-camps status.

While in many cases the increases [in all-Ireland trade] are explained by changes to supply chains, according to the CSO, in some cases, traders reported that they had previously incorrectly reported their trading partner as Great Britain, when in fact it should have been Northern Ireland.

The post-Brexit flux has made it hard to tell whether or not all-Ireland trade peaked last year ahead of something like a reversion to pre-Brexit supply chains.

According to Martina Lawless, economist at the ESRI, the last quarter of the year saw a fairly significant pick-up in the level of Irish imports from Great Britain, suggesting supply chains linking the two islands started to find their feet again after a bevy of disruptions related to Brexit, coronavirus restrictions, spiking commodity prices and production costs.

The most obvious reason for this is likely to be a learning or adjustment period that took a bit of time but has now been bedded down, Lawless said.

Covid complications

EU data updated last week showed that although the UKs food and general goods trades with the EU fell last year compared to pre-pandemic levels, they were up compared to 2020 and had regained something close to pre-pandemic monthly numbers by late 2021.

According to Haverty, it is difficult to say if a peak in all-Ireland trade was reached last year as part of a post-Brexit spike, as you also have the pandemic thrown in and a global-level demand [for many food commodities] outstripping supply.

Mash Direct COO Jack Hamilton also said: Covid makes it difficult to make any direct comparisons between the pre and post-Brexit periods, but noted his brand was seeing growth in Britain as well as Ireland.

Over the past few months we have got new national [British] listings as well, across into Morrisons and Sainsburys, he said.

And while increasing all-island trade was likely driven by post-Brexit customs issues, including veterinary health checks and organic certification, according to Whelan, significant supply chain challenges post-pandemic also contributed.

Moreover, although imports plummeted, Irish exports to Great Britain, which has not applied reciprocal checks on goods going east across the Irish Sea, jumped by 17% last year compared to the pandemic nadir seen in 2020, when global trade slumped and most major economies fell into recession.

And while Bord Bia in January described a shift in some categories to greater exports to Northern Ireland rather than to Great Britain, which it attributed in part to serving new customers in Northern Ireland, it added the region remained an easy route for onward shipment to northern parts of Britain.

The future of the protocol

Future trade fluctuations, including for food and agriculture, were going to be dependent on what the UK government and EU agree in terms of the protocol, Haverty said.

Earlier this month Northern Irelands agriculture minister, Edwin Poots of the pro-Brexit Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), tried to ban protocol checks on food dispatched to Northern Ireland from Great Britain.

Though Poots order was put on hold by a Belfast court, his party since said it would refuse to allow a government to be set up in Northern Ireland after May elections unless the checks were dispensed with.

According to a House of Commons report published in January, although grace periods delayed some checks and preparations, the protocol had a significant impact on Northern Ireland trade, including causing considerable diversion of trade to Ireland.

As well as being politically divisive, with the DUP fearing being edged into a de facto all-Ireland economy, the checks were costing Northern Ireland over 2m a day, opponents argued.

But despite the checks, traffic between Britain and Northern Ireland is up around 10%, whilst traffic between the Republic of Ireland and Britain is down around 15% to 20% as cargo switches onto domestic (intra-UK) routes and towards the unaccompanied freight model, according to Stephen Carr, group commercial director at Peel Ports, which operates on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Those fluctuations came as overall Irish Sea traffic dropped by around 6% on pre-pandemic levels, a fall primarily due to land-bridge traffic, which would normally cross Britain to connect between Ireland and the EU, diverting onto direct routes to the Continent from Ireland, said Carr.

Direct to Europe

The post-Brexit trade system prompted an increase in ferry and freight links between Ireland and mainland Europe, as traders sought to send goods directly to the rest of the EU rather than transit post-Brexit Britain.

A lot of trade from the island to the continent is shifting to direct routes, said Kelly of Food Drink Ireland.

Northern Ireland-based exporters who sell in the EU could be contributing to this trend, as sending goods to the continent via the expanding number of connections out of Cork, Dublin or Rosslare appeared to be the path of least resistance, compared to sending via the Great Britain land-bridge, according to Haverty.

And according to the website of Invest Northern Ireland, the official foreign investment agency, the regions post-Brexit status has offered dual access to multinationals seeking a potential gateway for the sale of goods to two of the worlds largest markets.

Invest Northern Irelands promotional material said the region was the only place where businesses can operate free from customs declarations, rules of origin certificates and non-tariff barriers on the sale of goods to both GB and the EU.

An Invest Northern Ireland spokeswoman listed key strengths including a talented and loyal workforce, advanced infrastructure, a pro-business environment, competitive operating costs and proximity to major markets as selling points to would-be investors.

Among those to take the plunge was South Africas Moorcroft Foods, which recently announced it would manufacture dried meat products in Newtownards after it identified real growth opportunities for our products across the UK, Republic of Ireland and further afield.

Whatever happens next with the Northern Ireland protocol, its clear the past year has laid the ground for lasting change in the island of Irelands food sector.

British lorry drivers in Gibraltar targeted by Spain with crazy red tape rules Rock fury – Express

Posted: at 12:11 am

While the UK left the EU in 2021, Gibraltar was not included in Brexit negotiations, which led to Britain, Brussels and Spain agreeing a temporary deal for the Rock. However, Spain has now prevented commercial vehicles registered in Gibraltar from crossing the border into the British Overseas Territory due to post-Brexit rules.

In a press release, the Gibraltarian government explained Spanish border authorities have prevented several vehicles driven by British citizens and Gibraltarians from crossing the border on Wednesday morning.

It said: "The drivers of these vehicles have been informed that they must have a work permit in Spain, or in a member country of the European Union, in order to be able to carry out commercial activity there.

The measure is aimed "specifically at third country nationals not residents in the EU, as the problem appears to be the nationality of the driver" as "EU drivers who are employed in Gibraltar have been allowed to continue to operate in Spain".

The Gibraltar Government indicated "regrettably" Spain has thereby "broken the existing reciprocity agreement".

Brexit put an end to the EU legal framework under which carriers in Gibraltar operated on the basis of their EU licences.

Since then, Gibraltar preserved the national legislation by allowing EU hauliers to continue operating in Gibraltar and in return, Gibraltarian hauliers have been able to continue operating in Spain.

The statement suggested reciprocity on the rules has been broken, and as a result it will also introduce a system of registration and licensing for EU hauliers seeking access to the colony.

It said: "Importantly, EU hauliers will not be able to operate in the territory of Gibraltar unless they have been issued with a Gibraltar road transport permit from the date of entry into force of the new regime.

It comes as negotiations between the UK and the EU on the future relationship of Gibraltar have resumed in London.

This is the sixth round of negotiations, following the one held in Brussels in February.

Spain's foreign minister, Jos Manuel Albares, said at the time negotiators were aiming for a deal by Easter, but would meet again for "as many rounds as necessary".

He ruled out any blockages to the Gibraltar agreement and said: "It's getting closer and closer."

DON'T MISS

Mr Albares added a "significant part" of the treaty had "already been agreed" although nothing is "agreed until everything is agreed".

He said: "A significant part of [the treaty] has already been agreed, although nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.

And I cant go into details. [But] I have the sense that we are all rowing in the same direction.

"As we approach the end of the negotiation, which is almost at 99 percent, there is more tension, but for us, for the government of Pedro Snchez, there will be no lack of generosity in any practical or daily aspect.

"I perceive on the other side that good will on their part."

Agreed by the UK and Spain at the end of 2020 although not legally binding, Gibraltar is currently a part of the Schengen passport-free area.

It comes after the Rocks Government has released a Guidance to Citizens booklet which outlines plans for the future of the British Overseas Territory if the UK and EU fail to reach an agreement after Brexit.

Signed off by Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia, they said: The Government remains committed to the framework agreement concluded together with the United Kingdom and Spain as the way forward.

However, since the UK or Gibraltar would never accept an agreement which would sacrifice fundamentals or put Gibraltars future prosperity in jeopardy, we must also be ready to walk away.

Therefore we must plan for an agreement and for no agreement at the same time.

This means that we all have a duty to prepare Gibraltar for the possibility of a Non-Negotiated Outcome (NNO).

The invasion of Ukraine has nothing to do with Brexit – Spiked

Posted: at 12:11 am

We are part of the plan. We have always been part of the plan. This is the latest stark warning to the West from Observer journalist Carole Cadwalladr, following Russias invasion of Ukraine.

Cadwalladr, as regular spiked readers are no doubt familiar, has spent the past several years tirelessly uncovering an elaborate hidden conspiracy that can apparently explain more or less every global development that liberal centrists see as unwelcome. Brexit, Trump and now the war in Ukraine are all part of the plot and Russia, Facebook and Brexit-supporting businessman Arron Banks (who is currently suing Cadwalladr for libel) are always somehow connected.

In an extraordinary outburst last night, Cadwalladr claimed that the war in Ukraine is not all it seems. Rather, Russias invasion is merely one front in the first Great Information War. And we in the West have apparently been under sustained attack in this war since at least 2014. And if you havent noticed theres a war going on, thats because it is being carried out invisibly.

Social media may seem like a fun way to pass the time, or a good way to keep up with whats going on in the world, but for Cadwalladr Facebook is a weapon a thermobaric bomb, she says, only online. It has apparently allowed Russia to carry out hybrid warfare on steroids. It has given the likes of Vladimir Putin a golden Willy Wonka ticket to manipulate hearts and minds. Almost completely invisibly. Weve been under attack for eight years now, Cadwalladr claims. But we refuse to acknowledge this, because in Britain, were a captured state. Oh, and its somehow also the fault of her arch-nemesis, Arron Banks. Former Vote Leave mastermind Dominic Cummings gets a walk-on role, too. If this story doesnt quite make sense to you, then perhaps the Russians have already got to you.

Such extraordinary claims are nothing new for Cadwalladr, of course. She has long tried to paint Brexit, in particular, as the handiwork of Facebook, of data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica, of Russian money, Russian bots, Russian disinformation and Russia Today as part of a coordinated plot to hijack democracy by a shadowy global operation. Now that Brexit is done, she tells us that Brexit is just a small plot point in a much bigger, more nefarious scheme.

Carole has essentially fashioned herself as a QAnon leader for centrist liberals a kind of Alex Jones for embittered Remainers in the UK and anti-Trumpists in the US. Yet unlike the real Alex Jones, who is shunned from mainstream platforms, Cadwalladrs crackpot theories have been indulged and encouraged by the liberal elites. She has been lavished with awards from the Orwell Prize, Reporters Without Borders, the Hay Festival and the Political Studies Association, and was nominated for a Pulitzer in the US. Yet so many of Caroles big reveals are presented with quite major caveats, such as Is it true? Who knows? and we are in the dark about so much, suggesting that she might not know the truth after all.

Cadwalladr and her fans see themselves as truth tellers crusading against the tide of foreign disinformation, or dezinformatsiya, in the Russian, as Carole insists on calling it. And as the West is gripped by war fever, there is no doubt a receptive audience for any claim against Russia and Putin, no matter how mad (the first tweet in Cadwalladrs Ukraine thread has over 46,000 likes).

But if these incoherent ramblings are what passes for truth these days, then we are in deep trouble.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse and the progressives’ dark pedigree – Washington Times

Posted: at 12:10 am

OPINION:

What do socialists, Marxists, transhumanists, Mark Zuckerbergs Metaverse, the LGBTQ movement, woke academic and corporate leftists, Davos economic elites and the left-wing of the Democratic Party have in common?

They are all invested in a progressive, secular worldview based on the idea that humans evolve toward higher levels of being and just need help getting there.

Implicit is the idea that God is an antiquated superstition, not the benevolent, omniscient creator of the universe. Another progressive idea is that the natural world no longer reigns; reality is all in our heads.

Transhumanism seek[s] the continuation and acceleration of the evolution of intelligent life beyond its currently human form and human limitations by means of science and technology, guided by life-promoting principles and values, according to whatistranshumanism.org.Now, theres the rub. What do they mean by life-promoting principles and values? Abortion, euthanasia, gender dysphoria and socialism? Woke progressives push all these evils while silencing dissent and altering the language.

Major media now use the absurd phrase pregnant people, not women, and obediently use plural pronouns like they and them for individuals. Were supposed to pretend men can get pregnant and win womens swim meets legitimately. Were told to follow the science (except for biology).

A Gallup poll says 21% of Gen Z and 7.1% of all U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ. For decades, studies pegged it as under 2% even while activists falsely claimed 10% to increase political clout. Constant promotion of LGBTQ behavior obviously entices young people to try it. The sharp rise in LGBTQ identification should blow away the born gay hoax. Yet they cling to it, daring us to believe that 10-20% of the population has been LGBTQ all along, just reluctant to declare it. Gods creation of two complementary sexes and marriage? Weve evolved. Anyone who says otherwise is a hater and bigot.

This is all about mans evolution into a more advanced species, like the transhumanists predict. How did we get here?

Whatever else we may think of Charles Darwins theory of evolution, it was gasoline on a raging bonfire of the vanities, worship of man instead of God that began in revolutionary Paris, culminating in the birth of Marxism. That malign materialistic philosophy insists that we are always evolving toward a higher plane. Cultural Marxism must destroy any lingering institutions and values to make way for the new order.

Eventually, we wont need government since fallen human nature will give way to unbounded, benevolent souls. Feel free to defund your police department if you believe that.

Karl Marxs prideful we shall be as gods outlook has killed more people and spread more misery than any other. And why not? Satan himself came up with it. Soul-killing envy is the beating heart of progressivism, which holds Gods natural order in contempt.C.S. Lewis warned that every power gained by man is also a power over man. In his magnificent novel That Hideous Strength, scientists run amok, like the boys in William Goldings Lord of the Flies. As Dostoevsky also observed, humans invariably go rogue when unrestrained by God.

Technology and science free us in many ways, but they can pervert what it means to be human. Mr. Zuckerbergs metaverse uses artificial intelligence-generated sensations to replace the natural world. As the Daily Mail puts it, the aim is to give people godlike powers.

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal explained the immersive nature of the Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset: If the crystal-ball predictions pan out, well soon all be wearing them to transform into digital avatars and work, play, shop and more in the so-called metaverse.

Meta, formerly Facebook, lost $3.3 billion for its virtual reality unit in the fourth quarter of 2021, but it will eventually take off. One reason is that our culture is so dark, with a limitless menu of gloom, ugliness, violence and bizarre sexuality.

If we were to conjure the perfect scenario in which we could sell virtual reality, transhumanism, gender dysphoria and other escapism, this would be it.

On the other hand, good things may be on the horizon. Parents are waking up. Leftists are terrified of the next election. Bible-based churches are growing, which bodes well for redeeming America. There is a fast-growing clean entertainment field, as exemplified by Pure Flix movies, Dry Bar Comedy and Babylon Bee satire. Wokeness is wearing thin.

And then theres the big picture, which we need to keep in mind to preserve our sanity.

Why do the nations rage and imagine a vain thing. He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; He shall hold them in derision (Psalm 2).

Put them in fear, O Lord, That the nations may know themselves to be but men (Psalm 9:20).

In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world (John 16:33).

The Sinister Return of Eugenics in the Age of Big Tech – Mad In America – Mad in America

Posted: at 12:10 am

From The New Statesman: Adam Rutherford, [in Control: The Dark History and Troubling Present of Eugenics], writes that though wildly popular across political dividesplenty of people vocally and publicly opposed the principles and the enactment of eugenics policies in the UK and abroad. This may be so, but very few of the active opponents of eugenics were progressive thinkers. During the high tide of eugenic ideas between the start of the 20th century and the 1930s, no leading secular intellectual produced anything comparable to Chestertons Eugenics and Other Evils(1922), a powerful and witty polemic in which he argued for the worth of every human being.

. . . Awkwardly for todays secular progressives, opposition to eugenics during its heyday in the West came almost exclusively from religious sources, particularly the Catholic Church . . .For the secular intelligentsia in the first three decades of the last century, eugenics the deliberate crafting of a society by biological design, as Rutherford defines it was a necessary part of any programme of human betterment . . .

The discovery that six million European Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, along with hundreds of thousands of people with physical disabilities, mental illnesses or other characteristics such as simply being gay that supposedly made their lives unworthy of living, was a rupture in history. Ideas and policies that had been regarded by an entire generation of thinkers as guides to improving the species were seen to be moral abominations. Eugenics had enabled an unparalleled crime. An earlier generations understanding of progress was not just revised. It was rejected, and something more like its opposite accepted.

This reversal should be unsettling for progressive thinkers today. How can they be sure that their current understanding will not also be found wanting? Rutherford, who shares much of the prevailing progressive consensus, seems untroubled by this possibility. As he notes on several occasions, he writes chiefly as a scientist. He has little background in moral philosophy, and at times this shows.

. . .There is a direct line connecting early 20th-century eugenics with 21st-century transhumanism. The link is clearest in the eugenicist and scientific humanist Julian Huxley (1887-1975) . . . in 1951 . . . he had coined the term transhumanism to describe the idea of humanity attempting to overcome its limitations and to arrive at fuller fruition . . . But . . . he illustrates a fundamental difficulty in both eugenics and transhumanism. Who decides what counts as a better kind of human being, and on what basis is the evaluation made?

. . . The fundamental ethical objection to eugenics is that it licenses some people to decide whether the lives of others are worth living. Part of an intellectual dynasty that included the Victorian uber-Darwinian TH Huxley and the novelist Aldous, Julian Huxley never doubted that an improved human species would match his own high-level brainpower. But not everyone thinks intellect is the most valuable human attribute. General de Gaulles daughter Anne had Downs syndrome, and the famously undemonstrative soldier and Resistance leader referred to her as my joy, and when at the age of 20 she died he wept. The capacity to give and receive love may be more central to the good life than self-admiring cleverness.

. . . The likely upshot of transhumanism in practice a world divided between a rich, smart, beautified few whose lifespans can be indefinitely extended, and a mass of unlovely, disposable, dying deplorables seems to me a vision of hell. But it may well be what is in store for us, if the current progressive consensus turns out to be as transient as the one that preceded it.

No, you cannot ‘devaccinate’ yourself with snake venom kits, bleach or cupping – The Conversation Indonesia

Posted: at 12:10 am

Claims you can devaccinate yourself have been circulating on social media, another example of extreme and dangerous misinformation about COVID vaccines.

Methods said to remove COVID vaccines from the body include using snake venom extractors or a type of traditional therapy known as wet cupping.

If you encounter claims like this online, you need to ask yourself four questions, to figure out whether these claims really are too good to be true.

Read more: People want to use bleach and antiseptic for COVID and are calling us for advice

Misinformation circulating on Instagram and other social media includes a video of someone using cupping therapy, suggesting this removes or sucks out the COVID vaccine.

The video shows someone cutting the skin, before applying a cup over the cuts to create suction a type of therapy known as wet cupping.

Cupping has been used for thousands of years, mostly in traditional Chinese medicine. Practitioners believe this eases pain or promotes healing by drawing fluid towards the treated area and improve the flow of energy. However, there are few high-quality studies to support its effectiveness.

Cupping usually affects only the superficial layers of the skin. COVID vaccines are generally deeper, injected into muscle.

After injection, vaccines train the bodys immune system to fight SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID. They do this by either presenting a weakened or inactivated part of the virus (the spike protein antigen) to the immune system, or by delivering the instructions for the body to make these antigens.

Its important to note, this period of training is very short, and once the body has learnt how to respond, the vaccines are cleared from your body in mere days or weeks.

Thats because after the vaccine has primed the immune system, the body breaks down these components naturally, just as it does with other genetic fragments, proteins and fats.

Read more: No, COVID vaccines don't stay in your body for years

Others have tried to devaccinate using venom extraction kits. These kits include a plunger-type device you place over a snakebite, which is supposed to suck out venom.

Again, venom extractors will not remove the antigen in COVID vaccines, for the same reasons weve already described.

They also cannot remove enough venom to prevent serious systemic (widespread) effects of a snakebite. One study found the kit only removed 0.04% of the total load of venom, and ended up just removing body fluid.Critically, they can destroy tissue around the site of the snakebite.

Information about devaccination continues to circulate on some platforms, such as BitChute and Telegram.

If you come across someone selling a wonder cure or drug online whether thats related to COVID or some other illness here are some tips for thinking about what you see:

1. Is it hard to believe?

When you see something posted that looks sensational, it is even more important to be sceptical.

In a popular TikTok video, an osteopathic physician, who no longer practices, suggests people detox by take a bath in baking soda, epsom salt and borax to get rid of radiation, poisons and nanotechnologies.

She says people need to detox because COVID vaccines have RNA-Modifying Transhumanism-Nano-Technology, and the people pushing these injections want to change what it is to be human.

She also claims to have identified a jellyfish-like tiny invertebrate called Hydra Vulgaris that can:

multiply and form independent neural networks inside those who have received COVID-19 vaccines and could ultimately influence their thoughts and actions.

Even though sometimes we want to believe that someone has found the cure or answer to a question we are seeking, go with your gut reaction. If it sounds ridiculous, it probably is. If you are unsure whether the information is legitimate, talk to a family member, friend or your GP.

2. Have you checked the facts?

If a resource is provided in another language, how can you be sure what it says?

Using the cupping video as an example, Stephen Dickey, a professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of Kansas, identified the dialogue in the video as Russian. But he said there was no mention of the vaccine and there is no mention at all of exactly what is being extracted.

When reviewing the resource, do you know who the author is and does that author specialise in the field the article is concerned with? Check LinkedIn or do a quick Google search to see if the author can speak about the subject with authority and accuracy.

3. Is there a hidden agenda?

Have you considered whether the person or organisation attempting to sell you a new drug or treatment has a hidden agenda? This can be increasing their reach on social media or making money.

For example, American archbishop Mark Grenon and his sons are reported to have sold more than US$1 million of their bleach-type Miracle Mineral Solution. They said it was a cure for COVID, cancer, Alzheimers, diabetes, autism, malaria, hepatitis, Parkinsons, herpes, HIV/AIDS and other serious medical conditions.

4. Whats the source?

When an article cites sources, its good to check them out. The post about the snakebite kit included references to three published papers. These were dated 1979-1992, decades before COVID.

Its also important to look at the topic of the cited paper. In the case of the 1979 paper, this looked at measures for a particular type of snakebite, which included examining the effects of applying firm crepe bandages on monkeys. There was no mention of the use of snake venom removal kits or COVID.

So, when you come across any videos or social media posts about fantastical new drugs or treatments that promise otherwise impossible cures or outcomes, it is important to always think:

If what youre reading seems too good to be true, or too weird, or too reactionary, it probably is.

‘We Stand Together Under the Banner of Freedom’: Where Is …

Posted: at 12:09 am

One group of truckers heading towards Washington, D.C. to protest remaining COVID mandates and government overreach said they will not make it to the nation's capital in time for President Biden's State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

WJLA-TV reports the group is known as "The People's Convoy" said they will not arrive in the D.C. Beltway area until Saturday, March 5.

Maureen Steele, one of the protest's organizers told the television station the truckers never intended to be in the District of Columbia for the State of the Union. And when they do arrive in the area this weekend, she said they will stay out of D.C.

"We have zero plans to go into D.C. proper. After January 6, what went on there, there was never any intention of going into D.C. proper. We've discouraged other people from doing it," she said.

The convoy posted their declaration to their website, which reads in part:

"WE DEMAND THE DECLARATION OF NATIONAL EMERGENCY CONCERNING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BE LIFTED IMMEDIATELY AND OUR CHERISHED CONSTITUTION REIGN SUPREME.

WE ARE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND WE STAND TOGETHER UNDER THE BANNER OF FREEDOM FREEDOM IS THE ONE THING THAT UNITES US ALL. LIBERTY FLOWS THROUGH ALL OF OUR VEINS."

The organization also explains who they are. "We are truckers, moms, students, nurses, doctors, investors, county workers, teachers, cowboys, loggers, engineers, sanitation workers, professors, cashiers, flight attendants, pilots, sales reps, physical therapists," the declaration reads.

"WE ARE, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, married, single, divorced, separated, gay, straight. WE ARE Black, White, Asian, Native American. WE ARE immigrants, natives: WE ARE citizens of the free world."

The group's declaration also directly addresses the U.S. government.

"To our elected officials that believe they rule us: YOU work for US," the declaration said. "Our constitution was written to provide enough power to act on a national level, but not enough to deprive the people of fundamental rights. The people are prepared to see this challenge through as we have seen through all challenges to our Freedom in the past. And we will prevail and prosper."

The convoy has been met with enthusiastic responses by people across the country.

Meanwhile, District and Capitol officials are tightening security in preparation for President Biden's State of the Union address. Police in the Capitol are preparing for major traffic disruptions this week, much like those in Canada following a month of protests.

As CBN News reported, one group from Pennsylvania is just one of several additional convoys that are planning to join in, heading south on Interstate 81 from Scranton.

U.S. Capitol Police released a statement saying the department is aware of the plans for convoys to arrive around the time of Biden's message.

"The United States Capitol Police and the United States Secret Service have been closely working together to plan for the upcoming State of the Union," the statement reads. "The temporary inner-perimeter fence is part of those ongoing discussions and remains an option, however at this time no decision has been made."

Security around the Capitol is ramping up with 800 National Guard troops expected to be deployed and a new fence around the building has also been erected.

But some groups who applied for a permit to demonstrate will be allowed to stage their events Tuesday. A permit has been approved for a rally Tuesday at the Sylvan Theater near the Washington Monument, according to WJLA-TV.

The station reported the KNK Foundation, the organizers of the event, described their demonstration as "peaceful" with Christian music, speakers against mandates, support of trucker convoys in Canada, and the lifting of mandates in D.C. and the rest of the country. It's scheduled from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm just before President Biden's State of the Union address.

The foundation's website describes the group as "an organization dedicated to seeking innovative ways to address food insecurity and fight to end hunger. Help adults and children with intellectual and physical disabilities live a life filled with purpose. Promote healthier lifestyles through education and physical activity."

Sculpture by Zenos Frudakis in Philadelphia

Freedom is a bronze public sculpture in the form of a large slab and a freestanding statue by American sculptor Zenos Frudakis, installed in 2000 outside the offices of GlaxoSmithKline in central Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The sculpture bears an inscription that encourages viewers to pose for a photograph in an empty cavity.

The sculptor, Zenos Frudakis, wanted to make a sculpture that centered around the idea of breaking free.[1][a] The slab is said to represent freedom from all restrictions: mental, political, religious, and physical.[3]It has been called a "visual metaphor for the process of transformation".[4]

The sculpture, completed in 2000 and dedicated on June 18, 2001,[2] consists of a 20-by-8-foot-long (6.1m 2.4m) bronze slab weighing 7,000 pounds (3,200kg) and a freestanding bronze statue.[3] It is installed on a wall outside the GlaxoSmithKline offices in Philadelphia.[5]

Freedom centers around four human figures who appear to be freeing themselves from the slab. There is one cavity on the slab from which a human figure has broken free, and where Frudakis left the inscription "stand here" as an invitation for viewers to pose for a photograph by standing inside the cavity.[6]

Frudakis cast his own face and his sculpting tools as part of the artwork, and included depictions of twenty-five people and a feline in the bronze.[1]

Freedom has been recognized as one of the best public art sculptures.[6] Architectural Digest called it one of the "28 of the Most Fascinating Public Sculptures" in 2019.[7]

Writing in The Independent in 2021, John Rentoul ranked the sculpture fifth on his top-ten list of best public artworks.[5]
