Posted: February 24, 2022 at 3:00 am
Mrs. Dorothy Jean Stacey, 87, of Woodbury, Tennessee passed away Friday, February 18, 2022, at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She was born on Monday, July 23, 1934, in Nashville, Tennessee. Preceding her in death were her parents, William "Will" Robinson and Lillian Spencer Robinson Crosslin; husband, Elmer Pruitt Stacey, Sr.; sons, Pruitt Stacey, and Donald Stacey; brother, Roger Robinson; sisters, Sandra Murphy and Ruby Martin; and granddaughter, Candace Richardson.
She is survived by her daughters, Diane Foster of Shelbyville, Carolyn Jernigan of Murfreesboro, Linda (Steve) Duke of Woodbury, and Cathey (Ricky) Stahl of Murfreesboro; son, Buddy Stacey of Bell Buckle; brother, Wayne Robinson of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Crystal (David) Haggary, Terry (Lynn) Stacey, Johnny (Bernice) Stacey, Johnathan (Lara) Jernigan, Stacey (Johnathan) Toombs, Michael Duke, Kim (Eric) Partridge, Dustin (Laura Beth) Stacey, Shaina (Zack) West, Anthony (Vanessa) Stacey, and Brandon Richardson; 23 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and dear friends, Wilma Prater and Helen Paschal.
If you knew Mrs. Dorothy there were a few things you could say about her. One was she was likely the toughest lady you ever met. She went through a lot of hard times in her life, but even when the chips were down, don't count her out. Just like a cat it seemed she had nine lives. Two was "Going" was her middle name. If anyone mentioned they were about to go somewhere, she already had her purse in hand ready to hit the road. When she could still drive she would come up with reasons she needed to go somewhere or visit someone. After she couldn't drive, one of her close friends, Wilma Prater, would come by to pick her up for outings. Another close friend was Helen Paschal, Mrs. Dorothy would call them up in the mornings just like she was their alarm clock to see what was going on and what they were all going to get into.
Another thing you could say was she knew how to cook and every meal was laid out like a Thanksgiving feast. With seven kids and a bus load of grandkids and great grandkids she didn't really know how to cook for a small group. Some of the family favorites were banana pudding, asparagus, and minute steak with onions and tomatoes. Cooking for a crowd went hand in hand with the plan she and her husband Elmer had to open a restaurant on the square in Murfreesboro called the Eat Shop. Mrs. Dorothy had a sweet tooth that wouldn't quit. She would rather have dessert than a regular meal. Her brother would often come by with a box full of a favorite treat of donuts.
Hard work didn't scare her a bit, whether it was taking care of her family at home or going out to earn a living at one of the numerous places she worked through the years. Whatever she did, she did it right. She and another friend owned and operated Jake's Auction in McMinnville. It was a job she enjoyed because it encompassed two of her favorite hobbies. When they needed items to auction on Saturday, she would go to all the local yard sales, storage auctions, and estate sales and get good deals on the things that would sell best at their auction. The real fun came on Friday nights at Jake's. It was wrestling night. They would book local wrestlers to come in and put on a show for the crowd. She loved seeing all the action and the wrestlers loved her and would often come give her a big hug and kiss.
Faith in God and love for her family were at the top of her list. Her giving spirit fit well with the Bible's Golden Rule of love thy neighbor and it is more blessed to give than to receive. Many friends, family members, or strangers were recipients of her love, care, cooking, and generosity. God blessed her with motherly wisdom. It often flowed from her and wasn't shy to tell you what she thought about a particular subject. Over the years her love of the Lord lead her to different churches, her home church was at Living Springs, but she would often find herself at Plainview Baptist in recent years. Old school gospel music by the likes of Loretta Lynn and George Jones topped her charts over any of the contemporary Christian music. In church she loved to hear and sing the old time gospel hymns.
Mrs. Dorothy's adventurous side and love of going didn't fade as she got older. She was well in her 80's when she took her first plane ride to visit her sister in South Carolina. The family made sure to indulge and spoil her with frequent trips out to eat, birthday parties, and shopping sprees. When she was out and about she wanted her nails done and her lipstick on. After all the going when she did get home, she was happy to get out the old faithful sponge hair rollers to get her hair ready for the next big adventure. She was happy to recline in her chair with her curlers, a pair of warm slippers and blanket to rest up for wherever tomorrow would lead her. Her family will have many happy memories of the family gatherings and going with Mrs. Dorothy to cherish in the years to come.
Visitation will be held at Gentry-Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 from 4-8 pm. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 11 am in the Gentry-Smith Funeral Home chapel. Greg Mitchell will officiate. Interment will be in Jernigan Cemetery. Psychiatrist and Empathy Expert: Can Empathy Help Overcome Anger Toward the Unvaccinated? – Newsweek
Posted: at 3:00 am
As an empathy researcher, educator and a clinical psychiatrist, I've recently become aware of my own limited empathy as I've attempted to understand vaccine refusal, grappling with my own secret feelings of disgust bordering on disdain, as the stakes are so high that have tested the limits of what I not only practice, but also teach.
Studies show that empathy has been linked to greater trust in the patient-clinician relationship, greater adherence to medical recommendations and better health outcomes. Despite these benefits, even the most well-meaning healthcare providers are being challenged right now.
My own feelings hit a new high when I learned about a 15-year-old who asked someone to pose as his father so he could get vaccinated because his own parents refused. Weeks later, both parents were hospitalized with COVID. The father died while his mother eventually agreed to be vaccinated.
Why does it take death to convince others to get vaccinated? How can physicians and others maintain empathy when people make decisions that flout medical wisdom and basic science?
For doctors, this is not new. We work with patients every day who refuse to quit smoking, lose weight, or stop drinking behaviors that can also affect the health and well-being of others. Empathy education is often needed to help move doctors beyond judgment and into a curiosity mode, enabling us to uncover more about patient perspectives and build trust.
We already know a few reasons why people refuse vaccinations, including fear and uncertainty of side effects, need for autonomy, education disparities, lack of medical literacy, widespread misinformation, polarized political rhetoric and distrust of governments.
But we're also seeing a big departure from one of the most powerful past drivers of vaccine adherence: a strong belief in social responsibility for the common good.
We're moving quickly away from a society that was once ideologically grounded in principles of cooperation, collaboration and reciprocity to one focused on the self. And that profound shift may be the most fundamental reason why appeals to get vaccinated to protect fellow humans aren't working.
This is certainly not the only reason for vaccine refusal, but it is critical that we understand why the golden rule of caring about our neighbor as ourselves has eroded. Why have people lost faith in participating in the public good?
It all leads back to empathy. When there is empathy, people feel seen, understood and helped. Our brains are wired to care for others, which is why we flinch when we witness someone fall or get hit by a ball. We also feel motivated to help in these scenarios because the human brain maps others' pain onto our own pain matrixes, producing concern and helping behaviors that involve reward networks and moral reasoning.
These crucial brain networks have been preserved throughout millennia to protect and ensure the survival of our species because when others hurt, we hurt. We need one another to survive as a species, and nowhere is that more evident than when fighting a global pandemic.
Studies show that well-educated, more affluent people are likelier to be vaccinated because they trust the government to do right by them because they reap many benefits. One of the root problems of vaccine refusal occurs when people experience a lack of empathy from the government and live the consequences of a broken social contract. Because many people living in poverty don't benefit from the public good, and are denied safe housing and decent schools, this lack of government empathy is mirrored externally: If no one cares about me, why should I care about you?
A failure of empathy toward the poor, disenfranchised, wrongfully imprisoned, and those with insecure food and housing can result in no desire to "give back" because the fundamental empathy loop that motivates positive reciprocity is broken. There is no reservoir of goodwill to tap into when people live in dire straits, distrust the legal system and watch billionaires get rich while paying zero taxes.
Frustrating to many leaders and doctors is the fact that meaningful change in people who lack trust in authorities happens slowly, one caring relationship at a time. But our society is not structured that way.
In the medical world, patients make changes when their unwillingness to change is viewed through the lens of empathy and met with curiosity and genuine interest. Respecting the autonomy of individuals to make their own choices while helping them build confidence in making small changes results from many conversations, not from bombarding them with information and public service announcements about why smoking leads to cancer.
The government and its institutions must tap into the power of empathy to learn more about how to make vaccines feel safer. However difficult to do, both doctors and citizens must also tap into their own empathy to offer understanding to those who feel they don't need to care about others, knowing that they may indeed have reasons not to care.
We also need self-empathy when we find ourselves judging others, recognizing that we've all fallen into the same trap of blaming rather than working on solutions. While this blame trap can lead us to feel powerful in our outrage no matter what side we're on we need to work together in our conversations to bridge our divides by seeking opportunities to understand and connect.
Waiting for the federal government to convince vaccine refusers to change may be waiting much too long. Our collective health is not an individual matter, yet we run the risk of individual choices undermining the health of our country and the world.
As a collective solution, we need to empathize and understand the predicaments that many people live with, including a lack of basic housing, food, education and medical access, all of which can cause people to give up not only on their own health, but also on the health of society.
Empathy can get us through this pandemic, and we must find ways to harness it. Our lives depend on it.

An over/under bet, sometimes referred to as a Total Bet, is made based on the total combined score of both teams at the end of a single contest. You can bet that either the final score will be over (O) or under (U) the total score set by the sports book. To determine the over/under on a specific contest, look at the odds board for a number typically listed as something like 155 for a college basketball game, 8 for a baseball game or 47 for a football game.
Additionally, an over/under bet is accompanied by an odds line. Sometimes the odds are even, for example both are +100. Sometimes the odds line differs, and one team may have the over at -120 and the under at +100. The odds determine your payout if you win your bet.
Over/Under Bet example:
The odds board shows a specific hockey game:O6 at -120U6 at +100
If you chose to bet the over at -120, you would need to place a $120 bet to win $100 if the final score is 7 or more. If you win the bet, your payout will be the $100 win plus your original $120 bet for a total of $22O.
If you chose to bet the under at +100, you would need to place a $100 bet to win $100 if the final score is less than 6. If you win the bet, your payout will be the $100 win plus your original bet for a total of $200.
If the final score totals 6 exactly, its considered a push and your original bet is returned to you.

Wisconsinites can now legally bet on sports with their phones, though theyll need to be physically present at one of nine casinos or rest stops in order to do so.
Oneida Casino launched the states first mobile app February 21, which lets users place wagers as long as theyre at any of the following locations:
In-person betting has been legal in Wisconsin since Oneida Casino renegotiated its gaming agreement with the state in November 2021. It is the states sole operator.
To register for the Oneida app, bettors must join the Oneida Players Club and put down their first deposit at an in-person sportsbook.
Wisconsin is home to 10 other tribes, though none have yet indicated plans to update their gaming agreements with the state.

Sports betting in Louisiana has really taken off!
During the first four days of operation in Louisiana, online sportsbooks raked in nearly $40.5 million. That's according to Louisiana Radio Network, who also points out that the six companies licensed to operate in the Bayou State also reported collective losses of nearly $9 million.
That is because, in efforts to attract bettors, thesesportsbooks pushed incentives to get them onboard. Now, as LRN points out, Louisiana sportsbooks are allowed to deduct up to $5 million annually for promotional spending.
Were talking about six operators that are tied to six licenses, saidLouisiana State Police audit director Jeff Traylor to LRN. So if you add it all up, it would be $30 million combined between those six. And they used about a third of that in the first four days. So, thats a significant amount.
With the Super Bowl being the opening weekend for the sportsbooks, it made sense that they spent so much in incentives - a third of their yearly credits according to Traylor.
And, with March Marchness coming up, and football season coming back again in the Fall, this means more money to the state.
Online Fantasy Sports Sites, FanDuel And DraftKings, Under Scrutiny Of Government
According to legalsportsreport.com, here are the 6 sportsbooks in Louisiana:
Caesars Superdome
But this may be just the beginning. Louisiana allows up to 41 different apps. Here are some other companies who may start to pop up in the Bayou State, according to legalsportsreport.com:
So, where can you bet on sports in Louisiana? Here are the current betting locations in the state...

Jimmy ‘The Greek’ Snyder Paved The Path For Sports Betting Talk On TV – Sports Handle
Posted: at 2:57 am
Oftentimes, I sit back and wonder: What would Jimmy The Greek Snyder think if he was still around to see whats happened to his trade?
You ask what The Greeks trade was? The Greeks trade involved talking sports.
In particular, The Greek liked to tell millions of television viewers his opinion on who would win or lose games in the National Football League. The legendary Las Vegas oddsmaker reached celebrity status after becoming a regular fixture on CBS The NFL Today show. He was the real O.P. (Original Prognosticator) of sports TV.
For a dozen years (1976-1988), James George Snyder Sr. sat on The NFL Today set alongside Hall of Fame sportscaster Brent Musburger, analyst Irv Cross, reporter Phyllis George, and later reporter Jayne Kennedy, offering opinions on the weekly NFL matchups during the fall and winter months. His role on the highly popular Sunday morning NFL pregame show was primarily to provide predictions for NFL games.
At that time, to put it plainly, The Greeks job was unique to television. Talking about sports gambling on TV wasnt commonplace. It was like hearing curse words during a prime-time network TV show. It just didnt happen.
Oh, how times have changed.
Now its easy to find oddsmakers on television and social media. Theyre on TV daily, predicting winners and talking point spreads and odds. Many have their own sports betting shows.
During The Greeks time, hed sit with Musburger in front of a studio scoreboard and opine on why he thought teams would win or lose a contest. However, phrases like a team will cover the spread or take the points or bet on the underdog werent permitted to be said during the broadcast, as words alluding to gambling were forbidden.
Yet The Greek understood his trade and did more during his roughly five-minute segment with Musburger than pick winners. He offered nuggets of information about teams and players, and shared inside stories about NFL owners and the league. Hed talk about a matchup and reveal his opinions about which team had the best defense, the best offense, and the best special teams.
And just before hed share with Musburger his prediction about a specific game, complete with a final score, The Greek would talk about intangibles to look for during a contest. In short, he was an oddsmaker who became the first NFL insider on TV.
No one previously with a Las Vegas Strip gambling background had ever reached such acclaim in the sports media. The Greek carved out a niche in sports media for guys who liked to talk sports wagering. He brought not only information to The NFL Today set each week, but he also added to the entertainment and appeal of the show, which reigned as the highest-rated program in its time slot during The Greeks tenure.
The Greek became more than just an oddsmaker and NFL insider. The Steubenville, Ohio, native reached celebrity status. He made cameos in movies and was parodied on TV shows.
It wasnt until he made some racially insensitive remarks about African-Americans in 1988 that The Greeks shine as a sports personalitysuffered any significant scrutiny. CBS fired The Greek for his comments on Jan. 16, 1988, and his career in sports broadcasting came to an abrupt end. Snyder passed away at the age of 77 after suffering a heart attack in 1996.
The Greek didnt live to see how dramatically the sports world would change when it came to sports betting. Much of what he couldnt talk directly about on TV is now daily discussion on sports talk shows. From point spreads to the over/under, nothing is off limits.
Its literally a new world when it comes to the acceptance of sports wagering in the U.S. More than 30 states have some form of legalized sports betting. That wasnt the case when The Greek was riding high as a key figure on The NFL Today.
Seriously, I wonder: What would The Greek think if he was still around to see whats happened to his trade?

Twosday, 2/22/22, sports bets to help you celebrate today’s palindrome – For The Win
Posted: at 2:57 am
There are a few ways we can tackle NHL bets on 2/22/22. The first is a rather straightforward parlay of todays six gameswith each favorite laying 1.5 goals.
Heres how that would look:
St. Louis Blues -1.5
Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5
Minnesota Wild -1.5
Florida Panthers -1.5
Anaheim Ducks -1.5
New York Islanders -1.5
Total Odds: +12281 (bet $100 to win $12,281)
Thats all good and well, but also a bit boring. Lets go for a little more action and see what our odds look like if we parlay the first period total goals over 1.5 in each game.
St. Louis Blues vs. Philadelphia Flyers over 1.5 first period goals (-140)
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets over 1.5 first period goals (-180)
Minnesota Wild vs. Ottawa Senators over 1.5 first period goals (-145)
Florida Panthers vs. Nashville Predators over 1.5 first period goals (-175)
Anaheim Ducks vs. San Jose Sharks over 1.5 first period goals (-125)
New York Islanders vs. Seattle Kraken over 1.5 first period goals (-102)
Total Odds: +2424 (bet $100 to win $2,424)
Betting on offense is always more fun and those odds dont seem like too much of a long-shot. But what about players who are wearing No. 2 or No. 22? Theyve got to be a lock today, right?
Might as well try it out. Heres what those odds look like (assuming everyone gets into the lineup).
Kevin Fiala, Minnesota Wild, No. 22: Over 0.5 goals (+180)
Kevin Shattenkirk, Anaheim Ducks, No. 22: Over 0.5 goals (+630)
Parlay odds: +1944 (bet $100 to win $1,944)
(Odds for Andrew Peeke, Nikita Zaitsev, Logan Brown and Mason Appletonwho each wear No. 22havent been listed yet)

Online Sports Betting’s N.Y. Debut: $2.4 Billion in Wagers in 5 Weeks – The New York Times

As of Friday, New York had already taken in some $78.5 million from that tax almost all of which goes to fund education far more than the $49 million that the state budget office initially estimated it would receive in the first three months of 2022. That estimate has recently been increased to $110 million, and the state also collected some $200 million in license fees from operators.
Its our first month, ever, and were at $2 billion, said State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr., a Democrat from Queens who serves as the chairman of the committee on racing, gaming and wagering. Its amazing. The astonishment of these numbers: Its incredible.
And new options for gambling may be on the way. Last week, the New York Yankees president, Randy Levine, expressed support for a betting kiosk at Yankee Stadium, following the lead of other professional sports franchises. Such a plan would be part of a broader expansion of wagering into stadiums, racetracks and arenas, something that Mr. Addabbo and his Assembly counterpart, Gary Pretlow, a Westchester County Democrat, are seeking to legalize this year in Albany.
The pair, Mr. Addabbo said, will also be pushing for an expansion of new brick-and-mortar casinos with on-site betting parlors something backed by Gov. Kathy Hochul, another Democrat, with many developers clamoring to put a casino in New York City.
Part of New Yorks big debut stems from its size; of the 20 states now allowing residents to gamble on their phones, New York is the most populous, with potentially larger players like Texas and California still sitting on the sidelines.
But the demand for betting in New York is undoubtedly intense: Roughly a quarter of the nations mobile bets on the Super Bowl came from inside the state, according to Sportshandle.com, citing analysis by GeoComply, a Canadian geolocation security firm.
New Yorkers are passionate sports fans and have been active sports bettors, said Bill Miller, the president of the gaming association. They just didnt have a legal option. And now they do.
