SpaceX to launch next-generation satellite-servicing vehicle for Northrop Grumman – Teslarati
Posted: February 24, 2022 at 3:03 am
Northrop Grumman subsidiary SpaceLogistics has selected SpaceX to launch its first Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) better described as the companys next-generation satellite-servicing spacecraft.
As far as SpaceXs Falcon 9 rocket is concerned, MRV-1 is just another geostationary satellite for it to deliver to a transfer orbit around 35,800 kilometers (~22,200 mi) above Earths surface as early as spring 2024. As of now, SpaceX Falcon rockets have launched more than 35 satellites to geostationary transfer orbits (GTO) and have at least 18 more geostationary launch contracts on its manifest 19 including MRV-1. MRV-1 is no ordinary geostationary communications satellite, however.
MRV isnt a communications satellite at all, in fact. Instead, designed to be the second generation of Northrop Grummans satellite life-extension spacecraft, MRV aims to build upon the successes of the companys first two Mission Extension Vehicles (MEVs). The first (MEV-1) became the first spacecraft in history to dock with another spacecraft in geostationary orbit (GEO) in February 2020. The second, MEV-2, successfully launched and docked with a different geostationary communications satellite in 2021. Both MEVs did exactly what they were supposed to, effectively giving their host satellites Intelsat 10-02 and 901, both more than 15 years old at least five more years of operational life.
While SpaceLogistics accomplishments are thus extremely impressive, the general MEV concept and parts of its execution have some flaws. First, the service offered appears to be extremely expensive, costing Intelsat the first and only customer, thus far at least $13 million per year for the five years MEV-1 will be servicing Intelsat-901. No other MEV contracts have been confirmed, which is not a major surprise. Assuming zero upfront costs for prospective customers, $65 million for an extra five years of operations represents a substantial fraction of the price of some simpler replacement satellites, many of which are now designed to operate for at least 15 years.
Put simply, at the secretive price point SpaceLogistics is offering, MEVs are a mostly ambiguous financial proposition for the geostationary satellite communications industry, which tends to operate on razor-thin margins. Though SpaceLogistics hasnt said as much, MRV seems to be a response to the issue of affordability. Instead of building one large, expensive MEV that can only service a single GEO satellite, MRV aims to operate more like a multipurpose space tug.
To complement MRV, Northrop Grumman is also developing Mission Extension Pods (MEPs) smaller spacecraft designed to still add at least 5-6 years of life to an aging GEO satellite. MRVs each about 3 tons (~7000 lb) will theoretically be able to carry several MEPs (400 kg/900 lb apiece) into geostationary orbit and install the pods on several different satellites. Additionally, it appears that SpaceLogistics will sell the pods outright, presumably precluding the need for expensive recurring service contracts like those Intelsat signed for MEV life extension.
According to Northrop Grumman, MEPs will actually propel themselves into GEO before being recaptured and installed by MRV requiring two rendezvous and docking maneuvers per satellite instead of one. Its entirely unclear why that added complexity is preferable over the obvious alternative, in which MRV would launch with a number of MEPs, carry them to GEO, and install them when needed.
Nonetheless, assuming Northrop Grumman plans to offer MEP life-extension pods for less than it charged for MEVs, its not hard to imagine the service becoming a no-brainer for communications providers with satellites that are close to running out of propellant. If the cost of several extra years of operational life is lower than the cost of an equivalent fraction of the lifespan of a new replacement satellite, its difficult to imagine how satellite operators could afford not to take advantage of life extension.
Northrop Grumman says its already sold one MEP to launch with MRV-1 on Falcon 9 to Australian telecom provider Optus and has a full manifest for MEPs through mid-2026.

Fly around SpaceX’s giant Starship rocket in this stunning drone video – Space.com
Posted: at 3:03 am
A stunning drone video from SpaceX shows the company taking apart the fully stacked Starship it plans to launch into orbit later this year.
The waterside view on Twitter, posted Saturday (Feb. 19), shows the giant Starship rocket on a crane next to the Super Heavy booster that will attempt the company's first orbital flight.
That flight can only take place, however, pending a positive result of a long-awaited Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) review of Starship's facility near Boca Chica, Texas. The already delayed review has been pushed back again to at least March 28, as the FAA cited the need for more consultations and more time to look at the public submissions associated with the environmental assessment.
Destacking of the huge system took place on Feb. 14; SpaceX periodically has placed Starship atop Super Heavy for fit checks and other procedures. The fully stacked rocket is the tallest yet built.
Related: SpaceX's Starship will reach orbit this year on road to Mars
Starship already has a large contract from NASA to send astronauts to the moon for the Artemis program, and a few days ago was tagged to potentially send one of the three newly announced Polaris Program flights into space. (The Polaris Program is a private space program paid for by billionaire Jared Isaacman, the commander of the all-civilian Inspiration4 that launched in 2021.)
On Feb. 10, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk delivered a major update on the Starship program to once again position it within Musk's longstanding wishes to build a Mars settlement. He told viewers he is "highly confident" Starship will achieve orbit this year and that the system will be able to go to Mars in the coming years.
"The sales pitch for going to Mars is that it's going to be cramped, dangerous, difficult, very hard work. You might die," Musk said in his speech. "That's the sales pitch. I hope you like it."

Woman arrested over claim she painted ‘stop SpaceX’ on mural in Texas – Business Insider
Posted: at 3:03 am
Police in Texas arrested a woman accused of spray-painting anti-SpaceX graffiti on a mural paid for by Elon Musk's foundation, The Texas Observer first reported.
Bekah Hinojosa, a resident of Brownsville and member of environmental group Another Gulf Is Possible, told The Observer that four police officers knocked on her door, handcuffed her in her house, and drove her to the local police station.
Hinojosa sent Insider a copy of a press release which she and her attorney, Mike Siegel, published.
The arrest was over Hinojosa allegedly spray-painting the words "gentrified" and "stop SpaceX" beneath a new mural in downtown Brownsville, South Texas, according to the press release.
Brownsville is located 20 miles west of SpaceX's launch facilities on the Gulf Coast and is known for being one of the poorest areas in the US. Some residents, including Hinojosa, told Insider last year they were concerned about SpaceX displacing locals, raising prices, and ruining nature reserves in the area.
Hinojosa didn't answer The Observer's questions about whether she graffitied the mural, under the advice of her attorney, per the report.
The mural was paid for by the Musk Foundation and painted by Los Angeles-based artist Teddy Kelly, who was given $20,000 to paint the wall, ValleyCentral reported when it was revealed in September.
The officers told Hinojosa that she couldn't change out of her pajamas before she was taken to the police station, and was threatened with a charge of resisting arrest, she told The Observer.
Hinojosa was kept in a jail cell for more than 24 hours and interviewed by police, according to the press release.
"I'm out of jail & back at home!!" Hinojosa tweeted on Thursday. She told The Observer she was released on a personal recognizance bond.
"I was singled out and publicly attacked by Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez because I am outspoken about the destructive impacts SpaceX is causing to our environment and community," Hinojosa said in the press release.
Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez posted a mugshot of Hinojosa on Facebook, saying she was "arrested and charged with a Class B misdemeanor stemming from the graffiti at the BTX mural in our historic downtown." Mendez said in the post that the incident was caught on CCTV cameras.
Texas law states that some Class B misdemeanors, such as graffiti, require a citation and not an arrest, The Observer reported.
Siegel said in the press release that he was calling on the City of Brownsville to dismiss the charges against Hinojosa, and investigate Mendez for "abuse of power."
"This is clear retaliation motivated by Rebekah's 1st Amendment protected conduct to challenge the environmental impact of SpaceX," adding that Mendez was "violating federal law."
Brownsville Police Department and Mendez didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
In an interview with Insider last year, Hinojosa said SpaceX was "littering" the ecosystems which were " the community's lifeblood."
The Brownsville Police Department declined to comment to The Observer and Mendez didn't respond to its request for comment before publication.

Blue Origin to increase space tourism flights this year; SpaceX, Virgin Galactic on similar course – India Today
Posted: at 3:03 am
After three successful human suborbital flights in 2021, Blue Origin is set to boost its launches in 2022. The company hinted that it will look to double the number of people it flew into space last year.
14 humans had brief suborbital flights on Blue Origins New Shepard spacecraft last year. In a presentation at the 24th Annual FAA Commercial Space Transportation Conference, Blue Origin said that it saw robust demand for suborbital flights.
The market is robust. Its very robust. The challenge for Blue at this point is that were actually supply-limited. No business ever wants to be supply-limited when theres robust demand. Its incumbent on us to go build new vehicles, get them ready and safely go fly, and also safely get our launch cadence up, Bob Smith, chief executive of Blue Origin said.
The Jeff Bezos-founded company has been in direct competition with SpaceX, which has been dominating the private commercial space-travel market with its Falcon-9 and Crew Dragon spacecraft launching not just private citizens but astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Blue Origin in 2021 began its commercial service by launching Jeff Bezos on a nearly 10-minute-long flight to space onboard the New Shepard spacecraft. In a bid to increase the number of flights, the company is also looking at introducing a new vehicle to launch more frequently than before.
According to SpaceNews, the company expects to bring in the new vehicle this year and quoted Smith as saying, Thats the one that we have to be thoughtful about because thats the place where spaceflight has gotten into trouble, he said. Weve spent a lot of time thinking through how methodically, to check out a reusable launch system.
Yes, there has been a demand for commercial travel, which at the moment is reserved for the millionaires and billionaires of the world. While Blue Origin has sold a flight to a Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur in the latter half of 2022, SpaceX recently announced plans to launch private astronauts on a five-day mission to space.

Lin had won the auction conducted by Blue Origin last year for a seat on the first crewed flight. However, he could not go at the time after winning the auction for his $28 million bid. Since then, several executives, celebrities, entrepreneurs have flown on New Shepard rockets enjoying the brief moments of zero gravity while looking at the planet from outside.
Virgin Galactic, another private spaceflight service led by Richard Branson, is also looking to ramp up flights to space this year. Company officials have said that they remain on schedule to begin commercial human suborbital missions before the end of the year. Virgin Galactic flew Branson and others on the first flight last year.

Satellite Vu And SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Goes Green Will Launch The World’s Highest Resolution Thermal Imaging Satellite SatNews – SatNews Publishers
Posted: at 3:03 am
Together these two companies will be launching the worlds highest resolution thermal imaging satellite in early 2023.
UK space firm, Satellite Vu, has signed a launch deal with Elon Musks aerospace company, SpaceX, to launch the worlds highest resolution thermal imaging satellite in early 2023.
Satellite Vu will be part of a rideshare launch on one of SpaceXs Transporter missions aboard Falcon 9, which have proven to be the most reliable rockets to launch satellites into orbit in recent years.
The mission will launch the first of Satellite Vus seven UK built satellites into a Low Earth Orbit. Satellite Vu has been well funded, so far raising 15 million in Series A investment and receiving two grants from the UK Space Agency and a third grant from the European Space Agency (ESA).
The satellites can collect thermal data, both day and night, of the built and natural environment at any location on the planet. The full constellation will have the ability to measure the heat signature of any building multiple times a day, enabling Satellite Vu to provide near real time insights about building heat loss, giving an accurate image of where to implement energy optimization investments, offering substantial cost saving benefits to both public and private sector.
Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) are building the satellites which have been designed with a 3.5m resolution mid-wave infrared imager with video capability and a sensitivity of less than 2 degrees Celsius. The satellite video generation capability adds unique advantages over traditional imagery, allowing for the detection of highly dynamic features and the building of 3D profiles, useful for a range of applications such as alleviating the effect of heat islands in inner cities, monitoring the pollution of waterways from industrial processes, reducing the cost of heating buildings and ensuring buildings are energy efficient, and assessing the activity status of solar farms.
Anthony Baker, Founder and CEO of Satellite Vu, said, We are delighted to have agreed to launch with SpaceX which will see the first of our innovative satellites launched into space. It is a really exciting time for the UK space sector and our satellites will make a real difference to the fight against climate change.
The world is struggling to lower their carbon emissions in order to meet climate targets, but through the data provided by these satellites, governments and businesses will be able to monitor their energy wastage and take action in order to make a tangible impact as we drive towards our collective climate goals.

Ascension (healthcare system) – Wikipedia
Posted: at 3:02 am
In 1999, the Daughters of Charity National Health System and Sisters of St. Joseph Health System merged to create Ascension Health, which was later renamed to Ascension; over the years, various other hospitals and clinics joined the system.[2]
In 2014, the company partnered in opening the $2b Health City Cayman Islands project,[5] and sold its stake in 2017.[6]
In April 2016, a class-action lawsuit was brought in federal court, alleging that Ascension subsidiary Wheaton Franciscan Services (in Glendale, Wisconsin), erred by treating its pension plan as though it was a "church plan," exempt from the Employee Retirement Income Security Act ("ERISA"), a federal law governing employee pensions. In January, 2018, the parties announced a settlement, in which Ascension would pay $29.5 million to the plaintiffs.[7]
In December 2018, the Attorney General of the District of Columbia brought suit against Ascension in an attempt to prevent its closure of Providence Health System hospital, which served a low-income population, and had failed financially. The suit alleged that the closure was in violation of the hospital's license.[8] Though the D.C. city council passed an ordinance giving the Mayor the power to block the closing, the suit ultimately failedwith the Council blamed by the judge for acting too slowlyand the hospital closed.[9]
In February, 2020, a jury awarded obstetrician/gynecologist Rebecca Denman, MD, $4.75 million in damages by an Indiana jury, after suing Ascension's St. Vincent Carmel Hospital and its St. Vincent Medical Group for defamation and fraud. The lawsuit arose from a December 2017 incident, in which Denman was accused of smelling like alcohol while on duty. Denman contended that she had been cheated out of the due process, as provided in the company substance-abuse policy, depriving her of a chance to establish her innocence, and retain her position.[10][11]
In October 2021, Ascension and AdventHealth announced the planned dissolution of their joint venture AMITA in 2022. Each system will retain the hospitals they originally contributed to the partnership. [12]
In 2018, controversy swirled around an announcement by Ascension and Google, that they had agreed to share information on millions of Ascension patients. The project, internally known as "Project Nightingale," involved analyzing health dataincluding lab results, medications, and diagnoses of Ascension patientsto use Google's artificial intelligence resources to recommend changes in a patient's care (different diagnostic tests, treatment plans, or additional physicians) and flag unexpected deviations in that care. The announcement sparked a probe by the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which enforces the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the principal law governing the privacy of patient records in the United States.[13][14][15][16] It also sparked inquiries by three U.S. Senators.[17]
Google and Ascension officials defended the program as beneficial.[18][19] Google Cloud president Tariq Shaukat posted a blog note asserting that Ascension health data would not be combined with consumer data, nor would it be used beyond the scope of Google's contract with Ascensionbut the actual scope of that contract remained rather unclear. Shaukat wrote that the project includes moving Ascension's computing infrastructure to the Google cloud, as well as providing unspecified tools that would enable doctors and nurses to improve care.[20]
Privacy advocates, howeveralong with cybertechnology and healthcare information technology expertswarned that Project Nightingale's risks to patient privacy may be massive, with the patient records tagged by patient name and date of birth, potentially allowing a direct correlation with other records in Google's vast database, for "other" uses outside the very limited protections of HIPAA.[13][20][21][22]

Catholic High claims season series over Ascension to advance in Division III playoffs – The Advocate
Posted: at 3:02 am
Catholic-New Iberia bolted to an early lead with a barrage of 3-pointers, then withstood a late rally to defeat Ascension Episcopal 59-50 in a Division III boys basketball regionals playoff game Tuesday.
Tristan Lewis made three 3s to open the game for the No. 6 Panthers, and Jaiden Mitchell hit two more to put the hosts up 15-0 at the 3:10 mark of the first quarter.
"I have pretty good range," said Lewis, a freshman who finished with five 3s and a game-high 20 points. "I was thinking that in order to win this game, we were going to have to start fast and shoot really well."
Although two of Ascension Episcopal's top scorers, Austin Mills and Luke Guidry, combined for only two points through the first three quarters, the No. 11 Blue Gators bounced back from the sluggish start.
The Blue Gators outscored the Panthers 13-7 in the second quarter to reduce the deficit to 26-18 at halftime. After going scoreless in the first quarter, Nelson Elmore scored eight of his 12 points in the second quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Mills and Guidry combined for 16 points and the Blue Gators closed within 47-44 on a layup by Cade Dardar with 2:30 remaining, but Mitchell made seven free throws down the stretch. Senior forward Russell Davis also scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter.
"I know he's young, but I know he's going to shoot 70% from the free throw line," McGrew said of Mitchell, one of three freshmen in the Panthers' starting lineup. "He's not going to make all of them. He's not perfect, but he's going to make the majority of them.
"Russell always finds the time to be in the right place. I don't know how he does it, but he's always in the right place to get a pass, and these guys find him. My younger guys, my ball handlers, find him and make that pass."
It was the third matchup of the year between the District 7-2A rivals. In January, Ascension Episcopal won 56-45 in Youngsville with the Panthers winning 44-41 in New Iberia in February.
"Ascension Episcopal is always a tough opponent," McGrew said. "We know each other very well. It was very important that we jump out to a big lead, and we did. We came out with a lot of energy, and we played really good defense early in the game."
Mitchell finished with 13 points for the 18-9 Panthers, who will face No. 3 Lafayette Christian (23-8) in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Elmore and Mills each scored 12 points and Dardar added 10 points for the Blue Gators, who finished the season with a 21-14 record.
"I thought our kids played with a lot of heart and a lot of toughness, which we've been preaching all year," Blue Gators coach Eric Mouton said. "There was a rowdy crowd tonight, but we never quit.
"When we play hard in our half-court trap, it's effective. Tonight, we got our hands on some balls and got steals to get us back in the game, but we gave up a couple of late lay-ups that cost us."

Ascension hospitals seeing triple the amount of patients due to winter weather injuries – WTMJ-TV
Posted: at 3:02 am
Ascension hospital emergency rooms in southeastern Wisconsin are seeing a spike in the number of weather-related injuries Tuesday than what they typically see during a winter day.
As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, 42 patients were treated. By 4 p.m., that number grew to 61 patients.
"That's almost triple the number we would normally have treated by this time on a typical winter day," an Ascension spokesperson told TMJ4 News.
Some injuries were sustained from falls, while others were serious enough to require surgery, according to Ascension. Some patients were also treated for injuries from motor vehicle accidents.
A Weather Emergency Declaration has been issued for the City of Milwaukee for Tuesday.
The declaration, issued by Acting Mayor Cavalier Johnson, "emphasizes the dangers associated with travel, and allows for the closure of various city government offices."
Additionally, Department of Public Works (DPW) crews report that they are "facing difficulty" maintaining safe travel, particularly on sidewalks. Some crews have been redeployed to ice control, which will impact some garbage and recycling collections, according to the City.
The declaration is expected to be lifted by Wednesday morning.

Ascension St. Vincent patient thriving with ‘bionic’ heart device – WTHR
Posted: at 3:02 am
The LVAD left ventricular assist device is a mechanical pump that helps circulate blood out of the heart when someone's native heart can't keep up.
INDIANAPOLIS Six and a half years ago, Drake Foster thought he was in good health.
"I was 21 years old, living a 21-year-old's life," Foster said. "I was pretty fit, did a manual labor job, and one day I just started feeling real, real sick."
He was short of breath and unable to sleep.
"We went to the urgent care in Lebanon and they told me that I had a heart rate of, I think it was 136 at the time," Foster said. "They came in, did a few more tests and told me that I had end-stage heart failure."
It's not something Foster ever expected, and he wasn't familiar with the solution doctors suggested.
"The first thing that came up was the LVAD, which I've never heard of before didn't know anything about it," he said.
"These are mechanical pumps that basically help somebody's circulation out when their own native heart isn't able to keep up with their body's needs," said Ascension St. Vincent cardiologist Dr. Ashwin Ravichandran.
He said they typically don't install the devices in patients as young as Foster.
"It's open-heart surgery," Ravichandran said. "It's attached to the heart, where then the pump itself has a motor that sort of spins blood through it and then puts it out into the rest of the circulation. It's completely powered by an external power source because we need enough power to be able to power a device like that.
Despite carrying a battery pack everywhere he goes, Foster said he's lived a normal life.
"I graduated from school. I started my career, which I've been there now five years. I work full-time, got married, bought a house and have a daughter," Foster said. "I mean, I've accomplished more with the LVAD than I did without it."
Now he's lined up for a heart transplant.
"I'm so used to having it, it's almost going to be a bigger adjustment to get used to not having it," Foster said.
When the LVAD is gone, his new appreciation for everything will stay.
"You have a different outlook on life and you kind of start seeing the little things as being what's important," Foster said. "Little problems don't seem as big."

Ascension Sacred Heart expands Bay Co. womens health – WMBB – mypanhandle.com
Posted: at 3:02 am
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) Ascension Sacred Heart administrators said they are investing in womens health.
Ascension Sacred Heart opened its second diagnostic womens center in the Panhandle on Friday.
The new center will offer some of the newest technology used to detect the early stages of breast cancer.
The biggest difference moving forward is you will no longer have to leave the area to get comprehensive care, Chief Medical Officer Mario Pulido said. You can now stay in your home, which is critically important when you are going through a diagnosis like this. Because family support, rest, nutrition, and having just a good support system all around.
Pulido said early breast cancer detection allows for more successful treatments. But Ascension Sacred Heart Bay has not been able to offer those vital screenings since before Hurricane Michael.
Aside from the emergency department at the main end of the beach, we were essentially non-operational, Pulido said.
Throughout this new facility, there is the technology for 3D mammograms, ultrasounds, as well as outpatient rehabilitation.
There is a Hologic mammography unit machine, it has the ability to do whats called a 3D mammography or biosynthesis, which essentially takes slices of the breast similar to a CT scan, Alabama native Dr. Jonathan Smith said. Smith is Ascensions new breast surgical oncologist.
He said his appointments will start next week.
We will be able to offer you world-class care that youd get in new york city or Houston, right here in your own backyard so Im really happy to be a part of that process and be able to offer that here, Smith said.
Dr. Smith and other Ascension staff hope to increase the number of women who have received their annual breast cancer screenings.
Ascension Sacred Heart will open a third diagnostic womens center next month at their Watersound location in Walton County.
