Congrats to the USMNT, but shame on US Soccer – Yahoo Sports
Posted: February 5, 2022 at 4:58 am

The United States Mens National Team hammered Honduras on Wednesday, 3-0, to move to the brink of qualifying for the World Cup held later this year.
The result is of little surprise because Honduras is terrible, ranked 76th in the world and winless in its past 14 matches.
It should have been a fun night for the Americans, who could have packed a big stadium somewhere, run up the score and gained valuable time together in conditions that might remotely be akin to November's World Cup in Qatar.
Instead US Soccer staged the game on a slick, frozen pitch in St. Paul, Minnesota. It was 2 degrees out. The stadium sat just 19,400.
It was an example of a small-time mindset within US Soccer, which too often plays with fear rather than confidence, which looks to protective gimmicks rather than bold attacks.
Its the kind of strategy that while successful is cringeworthy and hard to defend for even the most passionate of fans.
Really, the Americans needed to freeze out the Hondurans to win? Shouldnt this have been light work no matter where the game was played?
Historically, the American track record of success is poor. There is no debating that. In the past four World Cups, Team USA won a grand total of two games and never made it past the Round of 16. It didnt even qualify last time.
Still, this is a young and promising team. Lots of talent. Lots of potential. Let the Americans play with some flair and some fun. Let them use the time against weaker opponents to create something special.
Let the Americans play like a program that has eyes on greatness, on making noise, on standing toe-to-toe with the best of the world, not slipping into qualifying by freezing out lousy opponents in a choppy, sloppy game.

Its not normal, Honduras manager Herman Gomez said before the game. Its inconceivable that a power in every sense would bring you here to play a game and get a result.
The game hasnt started, but I cant wait for it to end, Gomez continued. Because its not for enjoying, its for suffering.
Story continues
Look, making an opponent suffer and possibly mentally check out before the game is never a bad thing. But is it a necessary thing? Is there any pride at US Soccer?
Shouldnt someone be a little ashamed that it thought it had to resort to this to win?
The conditions were bad for both sides. The Americans may have been more used to the cold than the Hondurans, but that was relative. The field didnt lend itself to quality play. This was a slog. Everyone looked miserable and trying to avoid injury.
The US scored all three goals on set pieces, which is nice, but also indicative that this wasnt the environment for run-of-play tallies. This was hardly soccer. At one point US coach Gregg Berhalter was taking pictures with fans.

Nothing was gained other than a victory that could have should have been earned in Southern California or Florida or at least in front of a big crowd.
Berhalter is said to want to limit travel. Since the Americans played Sunday against Canada in Hamilton, Ontario, this was deemed ideal.
But thats ridiculous. It takes about 2:45 to fly from Toronto to Minneapolis and about 3 hours to get to Orlando.
This is the US though. It wants bad conditions. It wants tiny stadiums so it can keep visiting fans out. It wants to play as far as possible from where immigrants of opposing teams reside, hence a disproportionate amount of games in the Midwest and few if any on the East Coast.
Everything is about protecting and pampering, like the American players cant take on even Honduras in 70-degree air or with a few opposing fans present and chanting for their side.
Better to just play an ugly, mucked-up game before a small crowd in the freeze of Minnesota.
Hey, it was a win. The US is one step closer to qualifying for Qatar. It just felt a little weak.

Sources: Hue Jackson may join Brian Flores lawsuit, claims to have proof that Browns incentivized tanking – Yahoo Sports
Posted: at 4:58 am
The wide-ranging class-action lawsuit brought against the NFL and a handful of teams by former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores may be about to add another plaintiff.
Two sources close to former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said Wednesday that Jackson has made arrangements to speak with Flores attorneys about the suit as early as Wednesday. The sources also said Jackson has expressed a willingness to provide testimony and materials to Flores' lawsuit, alleging that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam financially incentivized tanking for better draft position through the use of a bonus structure during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, when Cleveland went 1-31.
Some of the materials in Jacksons possession stem from a confidential fraud grievance he brought against the Browns following his in-season firing in 2018. That grievance was handled by an arbitrator under the terms of the NFLs collective bargaining agreement. That arbitrator ultimately ruled against Jackson, although the judgment was not considered a definitive determination of fact.
The recent comments by Hue Jackson and his representatives relating to his tenure as our head coach are completely fabricated, a Browns spokesperson said. Any accusation that any member of our organization was incentivized to deliberately lose games is categorically false.
Jackson declined to comment Wednesday. On Tuesday, the NFL released a statement refuting the claims in Flores lawsuit and said the litigation was without merit.
Sources tell Yahoo Sports that former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson has expressed a willingness to provide both testimony and materials to Brian Flores' class action lawsuit, alleging that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam financially incentivized "tanking" for draft position during two seasons over which the team went 1-31. (Photo by: 2017 Nick Cammett/Diamond Images/Getty Images)
Since the filing of Flores lawsuit, Jackson and the head of his charitable foundation, Kimberly Diemert, have posted tweets suggesting Jacksons intent to engage with the Flores litigation. Jackson, who is now the head football coach at Grambling State University, suggested that he encountered some of the same things Flores alleged in his lawsuit against the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Denver Broncos and the overarching NFL corporation.
Jackson told ESPN on Wednesday via text message, "it's time to take a stand. What I want is what Brian [Flores] wants which is for this BS to change for black coaches. I lived this same crap."
Story continues
Prior to this suit, Jackson spoke critically about Black head coaches having their success undermined by team owners that allegedly set a double standard for minority coaches when it comes to the building and success of franchises as well as the second chance opportunities granted to white head coaches versus minorities. Jackson also repeatedly has made claims that during his time in Cleveland, Haslam blindsided him with the size of the rebuild that was going to be undertaken, as well as some of the methods that would be employed during the rebuild.
On Tuesday, he added a wrinkle to those claims, suggesting that Haslam tied finances to what Diemert said was tanking. Responding to a tweet that said Haslam wasnt offering 100k per loss, Jackson said Trust me it was a good number!
Diemert then followed up with a series of tweets stating that Jackson has records to back up his claims, and that several team leaders (including Jackson) were a part of a bonus structure to tank, including former general manager Sashi Brown, chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta and current general manager Andrew Berry. Diemert added that the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell knew about it and covered it up, which is likely a reference to evidence provided during Jacksons failed grievance against the Browns.
Attorneys for Flores said Wednesday that other coaches have not become a part of the class-action lawsuit brought against teams and the league, but that it is expected more will join the litigation.

Super Bowl LVI will have the lowest-seeded Super Bowl matchup in history – Yahoo Sports
Posted: at 4:58 am
Technically, Super Bowl LVI will feature the worst matchup in history.
Now thats not to say that the game is going to be bad. Based on how Sundays conference championships and the rest of the postseason went, the game is bound to be plenty entertaining.
The game, however, will be the lowest-seeded Super Bowl matchup in history.
The Cincinnati Bengals, who entered the postseason as a No. 4 seed, knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs in a wild overtime battle in the AFC Championship game on Sunday to reach their third Super Bowl in franchise history.
The Los Angeles Rams, who also entered the postseason as a No. 4 seed, then beat the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship to reach the Super Bowl.
So the Super Bowl will feature two No. 4 seeds, which makes it the lowest-seeded Super Bowl matchup since playoff seeding began for Super Bowl X. Previously, if a team with a No. 4 seed or higher reached the Super Bowl, they played either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed from the other conference. Thats happened 14 times. There has never been a Super Bowl without a No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 seed.
Super Bowl XLV between the Packers and the Steelers in 2011 had a combined seed total of eight, though the Steelers were the No. 2 seed in that postseason.
This Super Bowl will also feature the most combined losses in the games history. The Bengals have lost seven times, and the Rams have lost five times, bringing the combined total to 12. Though there was an extra game in the regular season for the first time in league history, only two games have featured a combined loss total of 11 the Rams-Steelers game at Super Bowl XIV in 1980 and the Cardinals-Steelers game at Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.
The Bengals and Rams will square off at SoFi Stadium on Feb. 13, and the Rams are listed as an early -3.5 point favorite on BetMGM.

This week in Bidenomics: A rebound begins – Yahoo Finance
Posted: at 4:58 am
The Biden administration has gotten used to bad news: Worsening COVID, out-of-nowhere inflation, failed legislation. In the days ahead of the latest employment report, White House officials even pre-acknowledged the likelihood of a big labor-market setback in January, as the Omicron COVID variant peaked and businesses pulled back.
That caution may have been prudent, but it turned out to be unnecessary. Employers added a robust 467,000 jobs in January, defying all expectations of a pullback in hiring. The news was uniformly solid. Wage growth accelerated and more people started looking for work. Revisions for 2021 also showed stronger job growth than reported at the time. At some point this year, total employment is likely to finally exceed pre-pandemic levels.
The monthly jobs report normally reflects incremental changes in the economy that everybodys already aware of. Surprises are uncommon. The January numbers are different. In a healthy economy, 200,000 new jobs per month is typical growth. Employers more than doubled that pace of job growth in January, despite obvious disruptions caused by a new surge in COVID infections, hospitalizations and deaths. For the first time in the COVID pandemic, the economy is shrugging off COVID.
WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 04: U.S. President Joe Biden speaks on the January jobs reports during an event in the State Dining Room of the White House February 4, 2022 in Washington, DC. The U.S. economy gained an additional 467,000 new jobs in January despite contending with a severe COVID surge. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)
The 467,000 gain in payrolls in January is even stronger than it looks, as it came despite the spike in absenteeism driven by the Omicron virus wave, Capital Economics explained in a Feb. 4 research note. The gain appears to make a mockery of our fears that Omicron would weigh heavily on payrolls.
President Biden bragged about the greatest year of job creation under any president in history. But economists, for once, share his ebullience. Heres a sampling of commentary from some typically sober-minded analysts:
Comerica: Stunning jobs report.
Bank of America: Clean bill of health.
FWDBonds: The best economy in 50 years is back.
Harvard economist Jason Furman: January 2022 will be remembered as the month the virus ceased to the be boss. The economy no longer cares.
Story continues
Biden needs a break, needless to say. Never-ending COVID and 7% inflation have pushed his approval rating to the low 40s, the worst of his presidency. That wont snap back because of one economic report. But the narrative on the economy is improving, and the timing actually looks pretty good for Biden.
Omicron now seems to be fading and warmer spring weather should bring further relief from the virus. Americans are itching to get out and start spending on travel, entertainment and other parts of the service economy. That could ease some of the intense demand for goods thats driving inflation. Its reasonable to think that by summer, things will start to feel normal again and wavering confidence will improve, which would be just in time for Democrats who now seem poised to lose control of one or both houses of Congress in the November midterm elections.
[Get Rick Newmans stories by email or follow him on Twitter.]
Biden also seems to be handling the tense standoff between Russia and Ukraine about as well as anybody could hope. Russian President Vladimir Putin is undoubtedly looking for a way to outfox or embarrass the United States and its NATO allies, but so far, it hasnt worked. Bidens decision to beef up the U.S. troop presence in eastern Europe shows U.S. resolve in response to Russian threats of a Ukraine invasion. Washington, for once, is also countering the sort of disinformation campaign that is usually a Russian advantage. Putin could still invade, but Bidens handling of the U.S. response looks considerably more competent than the messy withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan last summer.
The biggest factor for financial markets is now the Federal Reserves monetary tightening. Had the economy lost jobs in January, as many economists expected, it would have indicated weakness and a possible delay in interest-rate hikes, which the Fed is likely to start in March. With the job market hot, however, the Fed remains likely to hike several times this year. That may not be great for stocks, since higher borrowing costs tend to lower corporate profits. But the economy seems ready for interest-rate normalization after nearly two years of extraordinary monetary stimulus.
Theres always plenty that could go wrong, as Biden learned in his first year in office, when the U.S.-backed Afghan government collapsed overnight and inflation began devouring family budgets. Another COVID variant could upend everything. Inflation could get worse instead of better. Russia could wreak more havoc than NATO can manage. But sometimes the surprises are welcome instead of ugly.

Meteorologist wins the hearts of viewers after bringing her baby on-air for forecast: ‘I was very confident she was going to behave’ – Yahoo Life

Meteorologist Rebecca Schuld melted the hearts of viewers in Milwaukee when her newborn daughter made an appearance. (Credit: Facebook)
Talk about double duty!
Last week, meteorologist Rebecca Schuld gave viewers in Milwaukee an adorable surprise when her 13-week-old baby Fiona made a special appearance during the weather forecast.
Shes prepared. Shes got one of her good thick blankies here for that cold weather thats coming up tonight, Schuld said during the forecast, which was streamed live from her home basement due to COVID protocols.
I thought she could help me with tonights first weather thats going to be plenty unpleasant, right?
As Schuld explains to Yahoo Life, the appearance wasnt exactly planned.
I was just minutes away from having my next weather broadcast, and my baby had just woken up, says Schuld, who had just returned to work from being on maternity leave. I go over to my greenwall. Im holding her and our producer is like, Oh, your baby, is she gonna make an appearance?' I was very confident she was going to behave because she just took a long nap so I knew she'd be happy. I said, 'sure!'
Video: Meteorologist Erin Moran brings baby to evening weather update
While the moment was certainly spontaneous, the meteorologist admits she felt slightly guilty about breaking the fourth wall with viewers.
"We're supposed to put on this certain face," she says of being a public person. "For a split second, I felt guilty about it and I don't know why. When I sat and thought about it, it's like, why am I guilty? This is real life. This is what everyone else is also doing. They work, their kids are sick, or their kids are crying in the background. It's always a challenge when you have kids in the mix, but that's what so many of us are doing everyday. So why are we hiding them?"
That guilt, Schuld explains, is something a lot of working parents place on themselves and something she hopes her experience can help alleviate.
"It was this weird moment where I'm like, wait, why am I guilty? No, this is awesome," she says. "I am still getting my work done. And, yes, do I have to put a pause on it if there's something going on with the baby? Sure. But that's life, right?"
Story continues
Thousands of viewers agreed, with many applauding Schuld's honesty.
This is an absolute privilege, Schuld says of being able to work at home alongside her newborn. If you have kids, you know how hard it is to be away from them. So to get done with maternity leave, and because of COVID, them wanting to keep some of us home, it gave me an opportunity to ease back into work life.
While Schuld admits its hard to have a set schedule with an infant, she says it's a blessing to be a working mom who can excel at her job while working at home. She hopes more women and industry leaders will embrace that, as well.
Im able to multitask and still care for her and be there in her life, she says. Some countries have maternity leave for a couple of years, so you're really able to bond with the baby and help raise them instead of, you know, putting them into daycare and then missing milestones. She giggles now in the last couple of weeks. She is cooing and all these things that now I had been able to see because I'm here with her. That's the best part.
Why not work from home if we can utilize technology? she continues. Why do we have to be in the office? We've got everything here at home. We're doing the same work. And we're able to have a more enriched family life so to me its the best of both worlds.
In addition to advocating for broader discussions about parental leave and working from home, Schuld is passionate about encouraging women to enter the science and technology fields, and hopes her story can inspire them to pursue those dreams.
When I got into this business, this was a man's world. It really was, the 20-year news veteran explains. But now, especially in the last five years, I feel like it's getting more OK." She encourages others to find their courage, too. "Do it, because it's great! And why not? We can be anything we want to do. Anything we want to be, anything we want to do, we can do it," she says.
"Twenty years ago, I had no idea I would be a TV meteorologist. But it has been the greatest achievement of my life," she adds. "And every day, I'm still super stoked to get up and do what I love to do."

UFC Vegas 47: Jack Hermansson looking to get back in the title mix – Yahoo Sports
Posted: at 4:58 am
LAS VEGAS The difference between winning and losing at the highest level of professional sport is minute. Sometimes, its just a minor mistake that leads to a defeat. Other times, its bad luck.
But Jack Hermansson understands this, which is why he isnt frustrated by his position heading into the main event of UFC Vegas 47 against seventh-ranked middleweight Sean Strickland on Saturday at Apex.
Hermansson, ranked sixth, is 2-2 in his last four bouts, and to some, the bloom seems to have fallen off the rose. He won six out of seven at one point in his tenure, defeating solid opposition like Thales Leites, Gerald Meerschaert, David Branch and Ronaldo Jacare Souza.
He looked like a title challenger for certain and perhaps even a champion. Now, hes 2-2 in his last four, with losses to Jared Cannonier and Marvin Vettori and wins over Kelvin Gastelum and Edmen Shahbazyan, and few are talking about him as a potential champion.
Hermansson, though, is not among them. He recognizes that in MMA at the top level, things can change quickly.
Every time out, you are fighting the absolute best fighters in the world, and the difference between everyone is not very much, he told Yahoo Sports. You just have to understand and accept that. But I like where I am at this time. If I have a good win in this fight, well, Im not that far away again. You cant dwell on any loss too much, just like its not a great idea to think youre the man as a result of any win. I know I am putting in the work and Im getting better all the time, and thats what is really important.
Jack Hermansson is 2-2 in his last four UFC bouts. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC)
The bout is an intriguing match of personalities, styles and varying approaches. Strickland is outrageous, aggressive and outspoken. Hermansson is thoughtful, detailed and careful.
Hermansson said hes impressed by Strickland, particularly since he has moved to middleweight and has gone unbeaten. Hes coming off a one-sided victory over Uriah Hall.
Strickland made a name for himself recently when he said he frequently fantasized about killing someone in the ring. He spoke to Yahoo Sports about having a loaded gun on his nightstand when he sleeps and hoping someone breaks into his home so he could use it.
Story continues
Hermansson sighs at such talk. Hes from Norway, where MMA has yet to be legalized. Stricklands comments dont help the push to legalize the sport in his native country, but beyond that, Hermansson doesnt take it too seriously. He doesnt feel like hes going to be Stricklands victim.
Hes a great fighter with a lot of skill and he can talk really well, too, and get attention, Hermansson said. Those comments obviously got a lot of people talking, because its so out of the ordinary. You dont hear fighters talking that way pretty much ever. But its gotten him attention and put a spotlight on him. Good for him, I guess, but its not great for the sport because people take that seriously and it doesnt help, for instance, in getting MMA legalized in my country.
No one has died in the Octagon or as a result of fight-related injuries in the 28-year-plus history of the UFC. There have been a handful of deaths in MMA over the years, but its a very small percentage compared to boxing, and thats largely because there are other means of attack other than punching someone repeatedly in the head.
For Hermansson, its a non-issue other than the impact it has on legalization efforts and on MMAs ability to become more mainstream.
He believes with an impressive win over Strickland, who is a -220 favorite at BetMGM, hell be quickly in the title mix. Thats particularly true if Derek Blonde Brunson defeats Cannonier next week at UFC 271 in Houston.
Brunson has already fought champion Israel Adesanya and was knocked out. Hermansson believes if he and Brunson win, hell leapfrog Brunson and be closer to a title shot.
Hermansson tries not to think ahead too much, though, because he knows what Strickland is capable of doing. One mistake at the wrong time and it could be over.
The fighters are so evenly matched that one lapse in concentration, one minor mistake, could make all the difference.
I want to fight my fight, execute the plan and get it over with as soon as I can, said Hermansson, who is +180 on Friday at BetMGM. I want to keep my focus on what I have to do and hopefully, it pays off with a great performance.

Of ritualists, yahoo teenagers and a sick country – TheCable
Posted: at 4:58 am
On Monday, the police public relations officer in Ogun state, deputy superintendent of police, Abimbola Oyeyemi, gave the preachment of the season. The sermon was in Abeokuta where the state police command paraded four teenagers suspected to have killed Sofiat, a girlfriend to one of them for ritual purposes.
After leading the suspects, including the erstwhile fleeing mastermind of the crime, Soliu Majekodunmi, through a media session where they gave details of their alleged crime, Oyeyemi attempted a diagnosis of the foundation of the increasing obsession of young Nigerians with premature wealth and the good life. In the end, he took a hit at three institutions of socialisation, which seemed to have failed in their responsibilities.
Hear him: I want to say that many parents have failed in their responsibilities. This is a result of bad parenting. It is a result of complete failure of parental responsibility because if this thing has not been encouraged by the parents, I do not believe that any properly brought up child will want to embark on this type of criminality.
I also want to advise that the generality of people have a lot of work to do, the religious bodies, entertainment bodies and everybody that has one thing or the other on protecting life and properties.
The religious bodies should stop preaching only prosperity. You should be preaching morality more than the way you preach prosperity. Nollywood actors and the movie censors board have a lot to do to regulate the type of film they produce because some of them (ritual suspects) learn it in movies.
Now, except for the fact that if anyone complains about the cost of dry-cleaning, it should not be the bedwetter who has loads of stinking attires, the good policeman made some good points. Many of those who adorn the uniform of the Nigerian Police are not better inclined than the boys on parade, which is why the average Nigerian has no confidence in men of the uniform. But that is a matter for another day. Regardless, there is no doubt that parents, religious institutions and, possibly, the entertainment industry have a lot of work to do concerning re-orienting the Nigerian child and youth. There is another viral video, where a 13-year-old was part of a three people crew that left Delta state to hustle and engage in yahoo yahoo, another name for internet fraud in Edo state.
As it concerns the entertainment industry, especially Nollywood, however, the point needs to be made that movies only reflect the society where they are made. More importantly, movies dealing with ritual preoccupations, as pointed out by Oyeyemi, are most often than not didactic in nature. In other words, they are resolved in such ways that those who may have involved themselves in dastardly acts are caught up with by the law thereby serving as deterrents to people who nurse the idea. If movies were such an important determinant of decisions that people make about money rituals, then we would very likely have more people dissuaded than tempted to engage in money rituals. What this tells us is that those who engage in money rituals, especially the young ones, have more incentives than films, the glorification of money in worship places and even the failure of parenting.
To be sure, worship places and parents should play a huge role in the proper upbringing and directing of children but the failure of these institutions suggests a more fundamental problem than a mere unwillingness, or even failure, to perform the functions. This fact is more so when you consider that at some point in the history of Nigeria, parents and religious organisations were at the forefront of the entrenchment of moral sanctity in the country. Those were the days when parents would insist on knowing the source of their childrens income and worship places would rebuff suspicious benevolence. Rather than the random vilification of parents and the clergy, a serious society would embark on a systematic study of the psychology behind the degradation of its value system and find scientific panaceas. But that is not Nigeria. The tendency here is to pontificate about issues, find tentative solutions that are at best palliative and come back to dealing with the same problem repeatedly. This failure to take our existence as a people seriously is the reason this country is going to the abyss before our very eyes.
For example, do leaders of this country ever consider the economic pressures that people go through in Nigeria? Now, close to 50 per cent of Nigerians live in poverty! That is about 100 million people. This means that most, if not all of these people, are unable to feed well, send their children to school, access health care, and live in decent homes, among other deprivations. The minimum wage in Nigeria is currently between N18,000 and N30,000 (less than $100 at the current exchange rate). Yet, citizens who have no access to any welfare programme or economic safety net are expected to live on and prepare their children for the future with these paltry wages. Of course, gone are the days when those in any form of employment had access to mortgages and soft loans that helped their families survive. Even if those loans existed now, interest rates would snuff the life out of people who attempted to obtain them. You then have a situation in which every Nigerian is for himself; a country where children who graduate from higher institutions continue to rely on their parents for years because they remain unemployed. And, before anyone speaks about self-employment, we should ask ourselves how well the education Nigeria gives its children prepares them to be employers of labour. Does education even have a functional objective in Nigeria?
In all of this, you have political and business leaders who flaunt wealth amidst this widespread poverty and lack. People get elected to offices and their economic circumstances undergo dramatic changes overnight. They start to build houses they do not need and buy cars they cannot ride on Nigerian roads. Yet the condition of the people who voted them into office, who remember the politicians humble beginnings, takes a worse turn. While our leaders do little or nothing to improve the access and quality of education received by the poor, their own children are sent to premium public schools in Nigeria and abroad. In the past seven years, when we have had people who claimed to be progressive politicians in the saddle, the children of the first two citizens have graduated from universities abroad with glamour and glitz. These leaders did not even have the decency to respect the sensibilities of ordinary Nigerians who are unable to afford one good meal a day. Photographs of these graduation ceremonies were all over the place. Of course, there might be arguments that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and Vice-President Yemi Osibanjo did not finance their childrens education with public funds; true but they occupy symbolic positions which sends copious signals of the importance of wealth and the lack of sensitivity in high places across the country. We can extend these arguments by asking how many of their children are allowed to observe their national service in rural areas or teach in any of the dilapidated classrooms across the country? How do we glorify stratification and hope for sanity? If you sow the wind, dont you reap the whirlwind?
For all of these reasons, my heart gets broken each time I hear our leaders talk about their achievements in infrastructure and how much is being done to crush all forms of insecurity Nigeria is dealing with. While one is not attempting to diminish the importance of any of these, they will remain fleeting, unsustainable successes if the country abandons the training of its youth and the welfare of its citizens.
What last weeks event in Abeokuta tells Nigeria is that we are preparing for a future where brigandage may be the order of the day. With an estimated 13 million children out of school all over the country, Nigeria is building a pipeline of assorted forms of insurgencies manifesting via banditry, terrorism, ritual killings, kidnappings and others for which there are telling signals. Even the children know this and are scared stiff of the future. A couple of weeks ago, I heard some secondary school appealing on Radio Info 99.3 FM that government should take care of their agemates who are unable to attend school because they will be a threat to our future.
Bottom line: This generation hasby eating with ten fingers and being unthinkingbeen unkind to the future of Nigeria. This generation of Nigerians has violated the sanctity of the next generation and laid the foundation for a bleak future unless remedial strategies that address our political culture, ethical contemplations and spiritual realities are promptly activated.
Probably more important than any other thing is the deliberate education of every Nigerian child, regardless of the circumstances of their birth or where they come from. Like in other forward-looking countries, education is the only irrevocable gift that this avaricious generation of Nigerians can pass on to the next generation. And when we talk about education, we dont mean piling children into blocks of newly renovated classrooms, manned by half-baked teachers whose stomachs are empty and whose minds are conflicted. Functional education is the one that takes the whole value chain into consideration. From a properly targeted curriculum and pedagogy to raising qualified and well-motivated teachers, ensuring that every child gets an education, at least for the first nine years, and giving vocational education a pride of place, those who lead Nigeria must do much more than merely mouthing their commitment to the future. Without that, we are building a country that will one day swallow her people.

Super Bowl betting: Why we like this color for the Gatorade bath – Yahoo Sports
Posted: at 4:58 am
Replenishing lost electrolytes is nice, but what if it were possible to use Gatorade to replenish your wallet? Guessing the correct color of the Gatorade bath in this year's Super Bowl could have you swimming in money like you're Scrooge McDuck. Just as any successful, bespectacled waterfowl will tell you, the best kind of guess is an educated guess. I think the Los Angeles Rams are going to win and my research leads me to believe that they're going to have yellow Gatorade in their cooler. Instead of getting a half return on the Rams' -200 moneyline, I'm looking to 4.5x my money with a bet on a Yellow/Green/Lime Gatorade bath at +450 on BetMGM.
Quarterback is the single-most important position in football. Teams are literally and figuratively led by their signal-callers. There's no doubt that the Rams are Matthew Stafford's team and Joe Burrow is the Bengals' alpha. Quarterbacks are also known to be a superstitious bunch. Before Tom Brady went to the Bucs, blue Gatorade was poured out in his final two Super Bowl wins with the Patriots when there was a liquid bath. When he joined Bruce Arians to bring a Lombardi Trophy to Tampa last year, he brought the blue Gatorade with him.
We have one recorded instance of an NFL Gatorade shower with Matthew Stafford. In his third season with Detroit, Stafford led the Lions to their first winning season in 11 years and their first postseason in 12 years. After Detroit clinched a playoff spot by beating the San Diego Chargers in Week 16, players celebrated by dousing head coach Jim Schwartz in yellow Gatorade.
Odell Beckham Jr.'s arrival in Los Angeles this season was preceded by a devastating ACL tear suffered by Rams receiver Robert Woods in November. A month ago, Gatorade released a short film profiling Woods. At the :04 mark of the film, there's a shot of Woods driving with a bottle of orange-flavored Gatorade in his car's cupholder. He never drinks from the bottle, and it's likely just an aesthetic branding choice, matching the color of the liquid with the infamous orange Gatorade cap. We do see Woods drinking from a Gatorade bottle at the 1:20 mark, however. As he sweats through a workout montage, he takes a break for a quick sip of yellow Gatorade.

Burrow has quite a connection to yellow Gatorade, as well. When his LSU Tigers gave coach Ed Orgeron a premature yellow Gatorade bath against Texas A&M in 2018, up 31-24 with 29 seconds left in regulation, they wound up losing the game 74-72 in seven overtimes. Burrow and LSU won the national championship the following season and no Gatorade was poured out.
Months before he was selected in the 2020 draft, Burrow was featured in a TikTok video released by the NFL. In the video, he names his favorite TV show ("The Office"), spirit animal (platypus), and color (orange). At +200, orange is the odds-on favorite at BetMGM.

Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire: Pickups to make during the All-Star break – Yahoo Sports
Posted: at 4:58 am
Special to Yahoo Sports
Even though the fantasy hockey week has prematurely concluded due to the All-Star break, that doesn't mean you should sit around and wait until Monday. If you're aiming for a title, look around the league for players who can help. Make a few offers and see what sticks. And should you be shooting for next year, try to accumulate as many assets as you can from the contenders.
Whether you're wheeling, dealing or both, it's always a smart idea to go to RotoWire for all the latest hockey news and in-depth material.
Like last week, you'll find a couple of familiar faces who should still be better covered. And remember, only previously mentioned players who continue to be less than 50 percent can be mentioned again.
(Rostered rates/stats as of Feb. 3.)
Like Michael Bunting last week, McCann had the honor of appearing in the season's first Waiver Wire article. He has successfully continued his outstanding Pittsburgh run with a decent haul for the expansion franchise in the form of 19 goals, 11 assists, 105 shots and 159 faceoff wins. McCann centers the Kraken's top even-strength line and operates on the lead power play where he's posted 10 points. And at 25, there's room to grow should he decide to stay long-term in Seattle.
Marchment qualifies as this edition's "No, really?" entry after going off for six points Monday and 12 in the last five games. This surge hasn't necessarily been surprising since he scored at a decent rate over multiple AHL seasons, though there's little chance of maintaining a similar pace. Marchment has fit perfectly beside Sam Reinhart and Anton Lundell on Florida's third unit, so offensive opportunities should continue to come.

When Thomas was first brought up in late October, his coverage rate was at four percent. Even though that figure has significantly increased, it's still not high enough for someone who's racked up 32 points in 37 matches and has regularly skated with Vladimir Tarasenko. Thomas' 275 faceoff wins won't convince anyone in leagues where that category isn't counted, but becoming a top-six mainstay and a consistent scorer on a strong team should be enough to garner more attention.
Story continues
The Habs are, well, the Habs, and that's generally not been very good for fantasy business, yet there's still value to be found. Hoffman averaged less than 60 points over a six-year span before dropping a bit in St. Louis and arriving in La Belle Province. The veteran may find himself lower on the depth chart at five-on-five, but he's part of Montreal's first man-advantage and has produced three PPAs from five outings. Hoffman's never been shy to fire pucks on net and has prolonged that trend with almost three shots per game.
Mikheyev turned a 56-point KHL performance in 2018-19 to secure a multi-year deal with the Leafs. The momentum of an excellent debut fell off the following season and seemed destined to repeat itself after he underwent thumb surgery in October. Fortunately, Mikheyev didn't need much time to get it going and has posted seven goals and three assists in 13 games. He may be a member of Toronto's third line and secondary power play, but he's been active with 37 shots and logs sufficient minutes on both special-teams groups.
It almost feels like yesterday when Ennis was dominating the WHL and being drafted in the first round and then I realize the latter happened in 2008. He's never hit that elite level in the NHL and has frequently changed locations in recent years. Ennis is now on his second tour with the Sens and looks to have settled in with some of the better talent. That's led to an outstanding run of six points, 22 shots and 11 hits across six games, including a hat trick last week against the Sabres. Ennis could be moved down once others return, but he makes for a sneaky lower-roster addition in the meantime.
While the Avs waited for Newhook, he starred at Boston College and was named most outstanding freshman for the 2019-20 campaign. He got a taste of the big leagues last year and put up three assists in six appearances. After making the team out of training camp and participating in one game, Newhook was sent down to the AHL and racked up 11 in 10 before being recalled and he immediately started scoring. He's been rather streaky, but is adapting well and boasts tremendous upside.
It's only coincidental one of Newhook's teammates from the 2021 WJC is listed right after him, though both are equally talented. Alex Tuch might be thought of as the key player sent by Vegas in the Jack Eichel trade, but Krebs may soon have something to say about that. The 2021 WHL MVP has already shown he's too good for the minors following four goals and 15 assists from only 18 games. Krebs has only found the scoresheet three times this season, but two of those netted a pair of points and rave reviews regarding his puck skills. With the Sabres' young core developing, he should be given every opportunity to succeed both now and down the road.
Did you get Andersson as was suggested at the beginning of the season? He's not in the elite tier of D-men, but Calgary's top power play is dangerous and nine of his 21 points have come during this situation. Andersson has also chipped in with 78 shots and 71 blocks while averaging 22:26. Better fantasy blueliners exist, though you're not going to find one with lower coverage numbers who skates major minutes while receiving plenty of scoring responsibilities.
Pulock is definitely someone to watch as he's only two games back from a lengthy absence. No offense yet, but he's been reintegrated on the man-advantage and his ice time should keep increasing toward normal levels. Remember, Pulock is only a year removed from producing at least 30 points in three consecutive seasons while combining for 30 PPPs. And if you're searching for supplementary stats, he's more than serviceable for hits and blocks.

Schenn never lived up to the high expectations of a fifth overall pick and can't be counted upon for offense, though there's something he can do that he's really, really good at. We've seen the likes of Cal Clutterbuck, Radko Gudas and Jani Hakanpaa make a name for themselves as hit specialists, and we now can add Schenn to that list. He's dished out 124 across 30 outings, including a whopping 19 from the last two being partnered with Quinn Hughes. We're not saying Schenn will magically start scoring alongside the star defender, but there's a chance he'll be on the ice when the Canucks put pucks in the net.
One could claim Miller is getting a boost because of Adam Fox's upper-body injury, yet the reigning Norris Trophy winner has only missed three games and Miller's PP role already jumped in mid-January. Nothing yet in that department, though the goal, three assists, 17 shots, 12 hits, nine blocks and a plus-6 over the last eight looks solid. Miller's points might dry up, but he's reliable as an across-the-board contributor.
Mrazek's first season in Toronto started off terribly after missing significant time with a groin injury and then almost immediately entering COVID protocols. 2022 has been kinder to him with a 3-1 record along with a 2.11 GAA and .921 save percentage over four appearances. Jack Campbell has looked dominant throughout the campaign but has experienced a couple of recent hiccups, including being pulled on Monday and Mrazek coming in and impressing. That doesn't mean Mrazek is going to unseat Campbell, though that should at least allow for more starts provided he can stay healthy.
Looking at the Blue Jackets' awful GAA and Korpisalo's 3.82/.887 line might have you wondering why he's being included. Sometimes the goalie who plays the most is sufficient as a fantasy fill-in. And that's been the case lately with Korpisalo as Elvis Merzlikins has produced and you may want to look away a 4.38 GAA and .884 save percentage from his last 15 games. That has left the Finn with consecutive wins and a decent replacement effort after Merzlikins let in seven at home versus Florida.
(Players to consider from past columns: Nazem Kadri, Tyler Toffoli, Joel Eriksson Ek, Tage Thompson, Lucas Raymond, Ryan Hartman, Ondrej Kase, Jesper Bratt, Lawson Crouse, Anthony Cirelli, Matthew Boldy, Ryan Johansen, Trevor Zegras, Nino Niederreiter, Ivan Barbashev, Mats Zuccarello, Anton Lundell, Kailer Yamamoto, Alex Tuch, Boone Jenner, William Karlsson, Troy Terry, Matt Duchene, Tanner Jeannot, Mikael Granlund, Sonny Milano, Jonathan Dahlen, Evan Bouchard, Jared Spurgeon, Moritz Seider, Shayne Gostisbehere, Damon Severson, Mark Giordano, Matt Grzelcyk, Alex Nedeljkovic, Matt Murray, Pavel Francouz, Ville Husso, Kaapo Kahkonen, James Reimer, Karel Vejmelka)

The Daily Sweat: The Cavs and Hornets have been fantastic against the spread so far – Yahoo Sports
Posted: at 4:58 am
The Charlotte Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers have been two of the best teams against the spread in the NBA this season.
Both Charlotte and Cleveland have covered the spread in roughly 60% of their games so far this season. Cleveland is 30-20-2 against the spread and 31-21 overall while Charlotte is 31-21 against the spread with a record of 28-24. Only Memphis (at 65%) and Oklahoma City have done better against the number so far this season.
Just one of those two teams in the Eastern Conference is going to cover on Friday night, however, as the Cavaliers travel to Charlotte in the best game of the evening. Charlotte is favored by 4.5 points at BetMGM ahead of the matchup as the Hornets are in eighth in the East, 4.5 games back of the top seed.
Friday nights game could be pivotal for playoff seeding down the road given the crowded Eastern Conference standings. The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat are tied for the top seed and just 8.5 games separate the Bulls and the New York Knicks in 12th. Cleveland is fifth in the standings and just 1.5 games back of the Bulls with the 76ers and Bucks a game back of the top spot in third and fourth.
The contest between the Cavaliers and Hornets is also a contrast in styles. The Hornets lead the league with 114 points per game and play at the second-fastest pace in the NBA. The Cavaliers give up the fewest points per game in the league at just over 102 and play at the 25th-slowest pace in the league.
Thats why the total is relatively low at 218.5. It took until the final minutes a week ago against the Lakers to hit, but were going to go with another Charlotte over on Friday night. Charlottes defensive rating is 26th in the league; we think Cleveland wont have much trouble keeping up if Charlotte controls the tempo.
While Cleveland and Charlotte is a matchup of teams that have been very good against the spread this year, Brooklyns trip to Utah is a game between teams that are having a hard time covering this season.
Story continues
Brooklyn is the worst team in the NBA against the spread so far this season thanks to the Nets popularity and their injury issues. The Nets are just 19-31-1 against the spread and the only team that has failed to cover in fewer than 40% of its games. The Jazz arent much better. Utah is 21-30-1 against the spread in 2021-22 and has covered in just 41.2% of games.
Utah is favored by 5.5 points on Friday night as Donovan Mitchell could make his return to the court. Mitchell has missed eight games while in the NBAs concussion protocols and the team said Thursday that hes available to return.
Rudy Gobert is set to miss the game, however. Gobert has missed the past five games with a strained calf after he returned from the leagues COVID-19 protocols. The Jazz went just 2-6 in Mitchells absence and has lost 11 of its last 14. Sixth man Joe Ingles also suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Jazzs slump.
The Nets are 0-3 on their western road trip so far. The Nets have lost to the Warriors, Suns, and Kings and are in the midst of a six-game losing streak since beating the Spurs on Jan. 21.
While Kevin Durant will miss Fridays game because of a knee injury, the Nets should have both Kyrie Irving and James Harden. The latter had just four points on 2-of-11 shooting in 37 minutes in a 112-101 loss to the Kings on Wednesday.
English soccer is back on its domestic calendar after the international break. The fourth round begins on Friday with a matchup between Manchester United and Middlesbrough. Man United is -300 to win. To take a look at all the odds and fixtures over the weekend, click here.
Power went 8-under in the first round on Thursday and trails Tom Hoge by a stroke in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That fantastic first round means Power is at +350 to win the tournament. His odds are slightly ahead of pre-tournament favorite Patrick Cantlay at +400. Cantlay is three shots back of the lead.
There are odds available for Sundays exhibition race at the Los Angeles Coliseum short track and were here to tell you to not bet the race.
The quarter-mile track inside the historic stadium is brand new. So are the cars. Its the first time teams have raced the completely new car built for 2022 and its happening on a track thats been constructed on a football field.
That could lead to an entertaining race. And some unpredictability. Those two factors are why you should sit out betting the Clash. Wait until the Daytona 500 in two weeks.
No. 7 Arizona beat No. 3 UCLA 76-66 in a matchup of top-10 teams. Arizona covered a 6.5-point spread and the game went under the 148.5 total. No. 2 Gonzaga covered a 23.5-point spread in a 92-62 win over San Diego and Arizona State covered against No. 19 USC by half a point in a 58-53 Trojans win.
