Giving Gap, in the spirit of Reginald F. Lewis, aims to improve philanthropy for Black nonprofits – TheGrio

Reginald F. Lewis became the first Black American to build a billion-dollar company and rose to prominence with his autobiography, Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun. His legacy of entrepreneurship, philanthropy and integrity lives through the Giving Gap organization.

Lewis daughter, Christina Lewis, co-founded Giving Gap in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd sparked public debate over how racial and economic disparities persisted in the United States. Giving Gap emerged as an organization that would amplify Black nonprofits addressing socio-economic inequities and connect the groups with donors online.

I think people read Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun because its about a Black person, but who sustained great financial independence, Lewis told theGrio. Thats what we need to ultimately close the wealth gap.

Aisha Alexander-Young, CEO of Giving Gap, contends that if the question posed by Lewis in his book title were applied to the racial economic issues of today, the question would evolve to ask, why should white guys have all the power?

The work that were doing, and its connection to his legacy, is ensuring that the power belongs with Black communities and Black-founded nonprofits that are building power in Black communities, Alexander-Young said.

The figures Giving Gap is challenging demonstrate that there are many ways in which Black-led nonprofits are in need of finding. According to the organization, the average revenue for Black-led early-stage nonprofits compared to white-led nonprofits is 24% lower. In comparison to white-led nonprofits, Black-led early-stage nonprofits have access to 76% less unrestricted net assets. Even programs geared toward helping Black men and boys have a racial funding gap that shows Black-led groups lagging in revenue by 45 percent.

I believe that these people whove chosen to do nonprofit work now and work directly in the community, helping people really deserve to be supported, Lewis highlighted.Too often, theyre working on threadbare budgets, you know, spending their own money on, you know, on supplies, because they care so much about this issue.

Online potential donors can log onto Giving Gaps website and select a specific area where theyd like to bridge the financial gap of philanthropy. For instance, if you are passionate about housing or food insecurity, Giving Gap identifies which organizations are addressing those disparities.

Throughout Reginald F. Lewis career, he acquired companies and invested in their growth. Similarly, Giving Gap provides donors an opportunity to invest in the growth of nonprofits that are providing services to Black communities in hopes of spurring sustainable economic stability.

We see that investments in Black-founded nonprofits are always connected in trauma, and then they go away. And its this kind of cyclical trauma, investment, and then lack of investment after the attention on that trauma dies down, Alexander-Young explained to theGrio. We fundamentally believe that that shift in culture should be that Black-founded nonprofits are important. Their work is important. It should be supported all the time, and not just connected to times of trauma.

Maybe some of those traumas wouldnt exist if we funded Black founded nonprofits fully all the time, Alexander-Young added.

To date, Giving Gap has more than 800 nonprofit organizations on their list and averages 20 submissions to add onto the list per day. Nonprofits can reach out to Giving Gap to be added to the list by going to their website and selecting at the top of the page submit a nonprofit.

In addition to raising awareness of Black nonprofits, Giving Gap exemplifies an emerging practice in philanthropy that has taken off since 2020 ethical investing. What you spend money on, who you financially invest in and what causes you decide to fund say something about who you are as a person and what you believe.

The concept of Giving Gap speaks to this shift occurring in philanthropic circles that its now a standard practice to put your money where your mouth is in a sense.

Even donor engagement makes a statement. Alexander-Young explained to theGrio that regardless of if Giving Gap achieved its goal of helping Black nonprofits access $1 billion in donations, shed still want to activate one million donors in reach.

Ultimately, this is about shifting the culture of philanthropy, and shifting the culture and mindset of people who are giving to organizations, Alexander-Young emphasized. We want to see, as many people participate in what is ultimately a movement to realize the value and importance of Black founded-nonprofits and supporting their work.

For Fund Managers, the most critical thing is to deliver returns to their investors. Keeping pace with the challenges of fund administration, accounting, and reporting while also adhering to regulatory compliance may distract your attention away from delivering value and keeping your investors satisfied.

Even the most experienced fund managers may find it difficult to maintain fund administration functions. Its no surprise that managing more complicated data and security procedures, as well as managing lean operating teams and reacting to regulatory requirements, may be challenging.

Julia Fox Finally Showed Us All Her Real Personality On Call Her Daddy And She Actually Seems Cool And Interesting – Barstool Sports

Posted: at 6:07 am

Alex Cooper gets another HUGE "of the moment" guest on this week's Call Her Daddy, and after the Jamie Lynn Spears episodes, I was excited to see how I'd feel after watching Julia Fox explain her life to us. A lot of people now know her as "Kanye's girlfriend" but despite some subtle shade I've thrown in blogs about Kim and Kanye, I've seen her around the scene for a long time. What made me start to think she was cool and normal, were a few tweets praising Julia from one of my favorites bitches ever, Cat Marnell (author of "How To Murder Your Life.) She's someone I respect, and she's always pumping up Julia on social. I was ready to give her a shot.

As far as the interview went, we really got a lot of good info. She doesn't shy away from talking about Kanye, or her semi fucked up past, and she's very open about having a much different experience than most growing up. Her parents were separated, living in different countries, and she spent most of her childhood/teen years with minimal supervision as an only child. Growing up in New York City, she explains that you "see a lot of adult things" at a young age. I've always said, city kids are freaks, mini hardened adults walking around like the run the place, because they do. Here are a few bullet points from the interview:

- growing up she was always interested in art, fashion and gaining her own independence. She wanted to start working as soon as she could - financial independence was paramount to her.

- she first went clubbing when she was 14 years old, she and her friends made shitty fake IDs that would get them in everywhere. She compares them to the girls in the movie "Thirteen" (big points with me, I love that movie.)

- She started smoking weed in 6th or 7th grade at her friend's house, because her friend's family was very casual about weed. She later experimented with harder drugs, eventually trying heroin (not a good look for the "weed isn't a gateway drug" crowd).

- She had her own clothing line (sold at DASH stores [which are Kardashian establishments] and worn by stars like Nicki Minaj)

- She got into the Dominatrix world. This part was fascinating. She told us in detail about her job at a "Dungeon," of which there are a handful in New York City, and explained that it felt a lot like acting to her. Men (she doesn't specify if women came) would arrive at the dungeon and choose where they would want to be; torture rooms, school rooms, doctors offices, and all of the "rooms" in the Dungeon would be decorated as such. Sometimes clients would pick certain women, other times Julia would find out last minute that she had to be playing the role of XYZ and would fulfill the fantasies of the clients. There was NO sex involved at all.

- After she was in a bad place, out of control with the drug use and unsure of where her life was going next, she fled New York to stay with friends in Louisiana and clean up her life. She was also on probation for 3 years, and gives credit to her probation officer and probation itself for "saving her life."

- Her role in Uncut Gems was made for her (she is very close with the director who has called her his "muse" for the movie), and the character's original name was going to be Sadie, but had to be changed because that's Adam Sandler's daughter's real name. They landed on Julia, because it just fit the best.

- She calls Kanye her boyfriend, and describes their relationship as this whirlwind situation that revolves around the fact that Kanye is wanting to dress her and "elevate" her. She's appreciates him for what he is, and to me it sounds like a pretty modern relationship with little expectations. She isn't "jealous" of Kim per say, but respects the fact that everyone has other relationships in their lives. She says "I know he's with me now, and that's all that matters." She sounds like she's very secure with herself, and with everything that's going on around her.

- She wants people to know she wasn't some random nobody before meeting Kanye, and she has the receipts. Even saying that the infamous party that included Madonna, was organized by her; NOT Kanye.

That's pretty much the bulk of it. I recommend watching yourself, the way she tells stories and the way she speaks is interesting to see. It's obvious that she's an artistic person, that she respects the industry and she even says that she feels she "deserves" this new level of fame. She explains that she feels she's earned it after many years of hard work, and honestly, I'm inclined to agree. I respect anyone who has hustled to her extent, overcome a lot of her own kind of adversity, and doesn't hesitate to be honest about her life. While I still don't really fuck with Kanye and how he's handled his life outside of his relationship with Julia, it doesn't seem so crazy that he's attracted to her at the moment. She's easy going, malleable, and eager to make her mark on society. She certainly has my attention!

Shocking and upsetting: Everything we know about Louis Therouxs new documentary series Forbidden America – Yahoo News

Posted: at 6:07 am

Louis Theroux is back with a new documentary in which he explores the impact of the internet and social media in some of the most controversial corners of American society.

Forbidden America will cover three themes across three episodes: far-right figures, rappers and porn performers.

Theroux has said the series will look at the way that social media has affected people in America who are in different ways involved in dangerous, extreme, or morally questionable lifestyles.

The documentarian said the three films were tough to make and feature scenes and confrontations that are shocking and upsetting.

He added: They are also powerful depictions of a world that has become strange in ways we could never have imagined just 10 years ago.

They show the dangers of the technotopia we all now inhabit, where extremist content can be piped directly into the phones and laptops of millions of children.

But they also illustrate some of the positive opportunities the new world has created by disrupting old hierarchies of power.

In the first episode, airing Sunday 13 February, Theroux meets the new, young influencers of the far-right who are promoting racist, misogynistic, homophobic and antisemitic ideologies online, often under the guise of irony.

Capitol rioter Baked Alaska and Louis Theroux (BBC / Mindhouse Productions / Dan Dewsbury)

Among the figures he meets are some of those who were involved in the Capitol Hill riots. Theroux will interrogate their opinions and explore how they are stepping out from the shadows of the web to influence events in the physical world.

Episode two will see Theroux immerse himself in the new world of rap and hip-hop in the southern states of the US, particularly Florida.

Ratchet Roach, Louis Theroux and Boo Bon (BBC / Mindhouse Productions / Dan Dewsbury)

He will look at how rappers are now becoming successful through self-promotion online, and how internet feuds, opening up about their anxieties and fears, and live-streaming their lifestyles has connected them to their fanbases.

The third instalment will see Theroux delve into the porn industry as it grapples with its own #MeToo movement.

He will explore how the emergence of websites such as OnlyFans has given performers financial independence, while social media platforms have become a space to publish accusations of sexual misconduct. He will meet accusers and alleged perpetrators, and discuss the wariness around stigmatising sex work as a haven for predators.

Louis Theroux: Forbidden America begins on BBC Two at 9pm on Sunday 13 February.

NATO and Russia hold war games amid negotiations to reverse the escalating crisis on Ukraine’s borders – CBS News

Posted: at 6:05 am

Lsna, northern Estonia As the U.S. and its allies continue negotiating with Russia in a bid to prevent the standoff on Ukraine's borders escalating, they are also preparing for war, and the preparations are clearly aimed at deterring any Russian invasion. French President Emmanuel Macron met Ukraine's president on Tuesday after flying to Moscow for talks with President Vladimir Putin.

Macron said the standoff with Russia could go on for "weeks and months."

Amid the flurry of diplomacy, NATO has bolstered its presence in countries around Ukraine, and the Western military alliance is holding war games hoping to deter a Russian attack.

CBS News senior foreign correspondent Charlie D'Agata watched on Tuesday as British and Estonian tanks squared off against each other in a simulated battle on a snowy wasteland in northern Estonia, not far from the Russian border.

The military exercise is a direct response to Russia's massive military buildup on three sides of Ukraine, which has sent jitters through the entire region.

As Russia prepares to kick off huge combat exercises of its own at land and at sea, the NATO war games have never felt more real, or more urgent.

If a wider conflict were to break out on the far eastern edge of Europe's democracies, the conditions at the NATO training ground in Lsna, Estonia are exactly what troops would encounter: Deep snow and difficult terrain, with limited visibility.

They would also face an enemy that far outnumbers NATO's forces, in both troops and weaponry.

Estonia and the other Baltic states, Latvia and Lithuania, sit right along the borders of Russia and its ally Belarus. Each of the three nations is home to a multinational NATO battlegroup.

American reinforcements have been deployed to Lithuania, Poland and Romania, while Moscow has sent tens of thousands of forces to Belarus to carry out drills as part of Russia's own military buildup.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said at a news conference on Wednesday that his country would "be talking to the U.S. to make sure that the rotational U.S. forces would be in Lithuania permanently."

"That would be the best boost to security and deterrence that NATO could provide, not only to Lithuania, but to the whole region," he said.

There is still hope for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Moscow on Wednesday indicated that Putin's government was still determining how to respond to U.S. proposals to ease the tension, but deputy foreign minister Sergey Ryabkov said the Kremlin had at least "taken seriously" the ideas presented.

But while the negotiations continue, so do the war games, because military preparations are never based on a best-case scenario.

Why Edge Computing Will Overtake the Cloud | eWEEK – eWeek

Posted: at 6:05 am

Compared to the previous generation, todays generation of startups are increasingly cloud-centric. The previous generation of dotcoms had to suffer the economics and complexities of deploying, managing, and scaling their own servers, networks, and data centers.

In contrast, todays generation grew up in the just-in-time, pay-for-what-you-need, and scale-up-on-demand world that is cloud native.

Also see: Why the Future of Computing is at the Edge

But over the last two years, businesses have largely opted for edge-enabled, serverless infrastructures. This means there are no servers to manage; no locations to spin up; and most importantly, no cloud computing contracts to analyze.

With edge-enabled, serverless infrastructures, businesses can benefit from faster and more stable API performance and a decreased need in infrastructure support and annual spend.

As a software practitioner for more than two decades, I have been through more paradigm shifts in computing than I can count. But I can confidently say this: The future of computing for an entire generation of companies will be edge-native, and the traditional cloud is the platform that will lose.

Also see: Top Edge Computing Companies

One of the main problems with paradigm shifts is that there are so many new technologies that emerge in the early stages. The same has been true for edge computing, with numerous companies offering edge-compute solutions that run on new infrastructures, telecommunications providers, and even cloud-computing companies.

When we talk about edge computing companies, were describing the ability to run code at the network edgespecifically the content delivery network (CDN) providers.

CDNs have been around since the beginning of the Internet. The major players (Akamai, Limelight, Cloudflare, Verizon Edgecast, and Fastly) have been helping customers ensure content is delivered quickly to customers by ensuring a large distributed global cache of servers.

In the old model, these providers simply stored data for companies, ensuring that as customers visited websites or downloaded software, the response times were fast because the server itself had the content as close to the customer as possible.

Also see: Will Edge Computing Devour the Cloud?

One change is that these server resources and the content delivery network itself are now programmable. This allows companies to move core API services off of centralized cloud servers and onto the existing globally distributed networks that the CDNs operate.

With edge solutions, companies that could only run servers in limited locations now have the ability to run APIs at a much larger scale, increasing user response speeds and the companys global footprint.

The second major change is how the code itself is deployed. With cloud computing, youre renting a server and running your code on it. With edge computing, you simply deploy your code to the platform, and the code is automatically run on the nearest server across the regions.

This idea, called serverless compute, is also offered by the cloud providers (AWS Lambda, Google Cloud functions, and Azure Functions). But with the edge platforms, these functions now run across a global fleet of servers with zero management overhead.

Changes in the technology landscape are dictated by the economics they offer, not just the innovation behind the product.

When cloud computing came to market, the economic advantage was instantly obvious. Cloud computing gives users the ability to swap high upfront investments in their own server and network infrastructures for zero upfront. They use on-demand leases of compute power that can be paid with a credit card. The adoption was driven by economics, not the technology.

With edge computing, we are seeing similar economic staying power. Cloud-computing companies buy server and data center infrastructure in bulk to support resales as capacity. Edge platforms, like CDNs, are using edge computing to drive additional value on existing infrastructure, which in turn lowers the cost required to provide compute services to customers.

CDNs are fundamentally simple servers: They hold copies of data (storage/memory), they look up requests for said data (CPU), and then return the data to the user (network). There are also a number of free CPU cycles available throughout the day, as most retrieve and transmit actions require less CPU power than running a full database engine.

With serverless models, CDN providers are able to further monetize their existing capacity, allowing for meaningful economic impacts downstream.

As companies expand globally, cloud-based bandwidth costs will only increase, whereas such costs are not even a factor in edge-native pricing. In addition, edge-native solutions dramatically lower management costs (no servers to monitor), scale rapidly at a global level (code runs near users automatically), and simplify billing.

For startups looking to offer low-cost solutions on a global scale, the simplicity and economics of the edge-native model is compelling. As the next generation of startups comes of age, we expect to see many adopt a cloud-free model.

Weve seen the future of the cloudand it lives on the edge. For businesses, this is a faster, more scalable, and dramatically cheaper solution to modern computing needs.

The Ukraine-Russia standoff is a troubling watershed moment for NATO – The Conversation CA

Posted: at 6:05 am

The escalating tensions among Russia, Ukraine and its allies represents a monumental challenge for the international community while also creating a political environment that could violently upend the way security is approached.

Read more: Russia has reached the point of no return in its conflict with Ukraine

The very real risk of warfare between the military forces of Russia and Ukraine is the primary focus. But for Canada and its allies, this conflict is not only about Ukrainian sovereignty, but also the structure of NATO and the viability of the rules that govern international activities.

If Russia conducts any activity that harms Ukraine or the Ukrainian government, it represents a very public failure of key NATO members to deter such action.

Furthermore, Russia attacking Ukraine whether through a traditional military invasion or via cyber attacks or misinformation campaigns would demonstrate the inadequacy of existing security-related international regulations. By escalating tensions, Russia would also exacerbate existing differences of opinion within NATO.

By threatening Ukraine, Russia has put pressure on NATO to either offer unequivocal support to Ukrainians and risk being pulled into a damaging conflict, or make concessions to the Russians.

These concessions could include NATO forces withdrawing further from Russia, a commitment not to allow Ukraine into NATO or the formal acknowledgement of Crimea as Russian territory.

This puts NATO in a difficult position. Such concessions would be seen as NATO bowing to Russian pressure, and potentially be perceived as abandoning its members on Russias borders.

Conversely, there are differences of opinion within NATO about the most effective and appropriate way of engaging with Russia. This was highlighted by the recent resignation of Germanys Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schoenbach. He stepped down after saying Russian President Vladimir Putin deserves respect and that the Crimea Peninsula, former Ukrainian territory that was annexed by Russia in 2014, is gone and will never be part of Ukraine again.

The latter claim was in direct opposition to the public positions of the German government and its allies, who continue to express the belief that the annexation should be reversed.

Of course, Ukraine is not a NATO member, so theres no absolute requirement for any other NATO member to come to its defence. Nevertheless, some key NATO members, including Canada, have been vociferous in their opposition to Russian activities.

Should Russia invade Ukraine, it will be very difficult for these NATO members not to respond forcefully. Other NATO allies would also be forced to decide whether theyll provide support. Failing to do so, even though it may not technically represent an abdication of NATO responsibilities, would signify a considerable breach in the alliance.

Furthermore, for NATO members, stability in Europe is heavily based on ensuring that the actions of states in the region are predictable, which is partly achieved through openness and transparency.

In theory, if everyone is open about their activities and benefits and the risks of their actions are clearly understood then the likely course of future policy and activity can be predicted. This also makes it easier to prepare if another states actions appear to be threatening or aggressive.

If actions are predictable, the ability to act aggressively by surprising another state is reduced, and relationships between states are therefore stabilized.

To a certain extent, this approach is based on being clear about the costs involved in acting aggressively. The publication of details about the material support given to Ukraine by NATO members, including the United States and the United Kingdom, is an example of how NATO has sought to use openness and predictability to create stability and deter Russia from attacking Ukraine.

By highlighting the improvement in Ukrainian military capability, it suggests that a higher number of Russian troops would be killed if they tried to invade. The intention here is not to surprise Russian troops with Ukrainian capability and defeat them in battle, but instead to deter Russia from attacking Ukraine by indicating a predictable increase in potential Russian casualties.

More fundamentally, predictability has stemmed from the agreement of regulations intended to govern behaviour. When such rules are established and followed, the game of international security is easier to play. All participants are aware of the rules and understand that adhering to them benefits everyone.

These rules are now under huge stress. The possibility of a Russian invasion rips apart the basic tenets of international agreements that generally prohibit the use of force.

In addition, Russia may use force that doesnt meet the threshold of war, such as launching more cyber attacks or, as the U.K. Foreign Office has suggested, leveraging political pressure that results in the installation of a pro-Russian politician as the head of the Ukrainian government.

These tactics suggest Russia and NATO members have a different understanding of the importance of international law, and that the existing rules provide insufficient guidance around the use of whats known as force-short-of-war. Consequently, predictability is undermined, and NATO decision-making becomes much more difficult.

The situation marks an existential crisis for NATO. Low-level Russian action against Ukraine would have limited implications for NATO. However, if NATO cannot deter Russia from taking open military action against Ukraine or theres broad international failure to respond robustly, faith in the rules and regulations that have underpinned international relations could be terminally undermined.

That would result in a re-evaluation of how to successfully establish security. Its not likely that introspection would lead to greater international collaboration and more robust rules, but a return to more individualistic security policy shouldnt be accepted lightly.

This situation is therefore a watershed moment. If diplomatic efforts cannot avert further conflict between Ukraine and Russia whether its traditional warfare or activities that fall below this threshold a dramatic shift in international relations could occur.

A loss of faith in the ability of existing rules and international organizations to ensure peace and stability could wrench apart NATO and result in costly and jarring reconfigurations of security policy.

Why NATO will endure well beyond today’s crises – Atlantic Council

Posted: at 6:05 am

After the disastrous abandonment of Afghanistan, after years of bickering over the 2 percent of gross domestic product target for defense spending, and after French President Emmanuel Macron deemed the Alliance brain dead, NATO is front and center on the geopolitical stage and reclaiming relevance in the current cacophony. On June 29 and 30, the Alliance will meet in Madrid with two major issues on the agenda: the upcoming expiration of the Secretary Generals mandate on October 1 this year and the articulation of a new Strategic Concept, an outline of action that allies typically establish every ten years, though the current one was released in 2010.

It is therefore time to go above the noise and take stock of NATOs purposecreated by the 1949 North Atlantic Treatyand the philosophy that conceived it. General Lord Hastings Ismay, NATOs first Secretary General, is credited with coining the often-repeated shorthand description of the projects raison dtre when he first took office in 1952: Keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down. In other words, in the face of Soviet expansionism, rebuild the continent by avoiding the resurgence of nationalist militarism in Europe. This endeavor convinced US President Harry S. Truman to, instead of bringing US troops back home as soon as hostilities ended, consolidate their presence in Europe. In keeping with the architecture for peace developed after World War II, the United States bet on Europeand Europe bet on the protection offered by Washington.

The will of the twelve North Atlantic Treaty signatories (ten European countries plus Canada and the United States) was to advance the architecture of the international liberal system. With express mention of the recently formed United Nations, the preamble could not be clearer: Its founding impulse is to bring together countries founded on democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law in order to promote stability and well-being in the North Atlantic area.

Both a political and military partnership, NATO is focused on collective defense, as touted in Article 5 of its founding treaty, which clearly states, if such an armed attack occurs, each of [the members] will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Afghanistan has been a topic of almost constant conversation in the past year, owing to the United States haphazard departure in August 2021 with some NATO allies saying they werent consulted. But in the hubbub of Augusts events, a crucial fact was forgotten: NATO allies had been in Afghanistan since the first (and only) time that Article 5 has been invokedfollowing the September 11 attacks. Beyond being an attack on the United States, 9/11 represented a challenge to the very core of the North Atlantic Treaty: democracy and the multilateral order. And it forced NATO allies to develop an awareness of the potential for new, unconventional threatsthat is, those outside traditional warfare.

Just as the beginning of the Afghanistan operation marked a symbolic milestone, so, too, did its end. While former President Donald Trump damaged the image of the US presidency in the eyes of the world, those who hated the United States still had a general respect for the White House. However, since the scenes from Kabuls airport, Washington has been perceived as an unreliable partner shedding its Atlantic ties to concentrate on the Indo-Pacific: Some fear it is evidence of its abdication of global leadership. But the United States ability to respond to global challenges and the integration of values in its foreign policy should not be underestimated. After all, Uncle Sam has bounced back from other difficult situations in recent historyVietnam comes to mind.

In that vein, the United States and NATOs coordinated responses to Russian President Vladimir Putins December 17 ultimatum offer Moscow a serious and in-depth dialogue on arms control and strategic stability, but proclaim transatlantic commitment and steadfastness; a resounding rejection of Russian demands; and reaffirmation of the centrality of the principles of sovereignty, the inviolability of borders, and territorial integrity. They direct the Kremlin to refrain from the threat and use of force. Finally, and critically, both reiterate countries right to choose or change their security arrangementsto decide their future without external interference. This right is laid out in NATOs well-known Open-Door Policy which prompted one of Putins classic responses of convolution: They saya policy of open doors. Where did it come from? NATO has an open-door policy. Where is it stated? Nowhere.

As for Europeans, the situation in Ukraine has made internal contradictions come to a head. From the outset, the European Union (EU) has been largely absent from the dialogue with Moscow, barring Macrons bravado-riven bilateral conversations and his insights into the contemporary traumas of this great people [Russians] and great nation. Europes energy has been focused on grandiloquent speeches (unsurprisingly, primarily in French) and pompous formulas: while strategic autonomy loses momentum in Brussels talks, the term Strategic Compass is gaining ground after the European Council promised to adoptwithin six weekswhat it has described as a road map to turning the Union into a more effective international security actor by 2030 and to strengthening its strategic sovereignty. Per a lesson from Aesops Fables, the mountain will give birth to another mouseunless there is a miracle here, this speech promising great things will amount to little.

Europeans do not perceive danger in the same way across the board for historical and geographic reasons. Furthermore, there is the concerning about-facingsuch as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbns recent visit to Moscow and his statements that Putins requests for security guarantees are normal despite the fact that they include proposals to block NATO weapons and forces from NATO members who joined after 1997, which includes Hungary. Allies also have to face the weakening of the democratic link within the organization, and particularly within the EU. Finally, Europeans have not accepted that defense must be paid for. All of the above serves as a backdrop for pessimistic outbursts such as Macrons.

The Kremlin has spent years toward Putins objective of undermining the West but, more specifically, Europe and its futurethe democratic system. And Putin makes no attempt to hide it with his litany of aggressive statements, weaponization of energy, Russo-Georgian war in 2008, and invasion of Crimea in 2014. But Ukraine seems to be the straw that broke the camels back. Procrastination in the face of gradualism is not a solution for NATO. It is time for an analysis of the range of Russias capabilities that the current situation has confirmed: misinformation, hybrid attacks, new technologies (including cyberattacks), little green men, and mercenaries. Those are gray areas that the Strategic Concept will have to clarify due to their impact on the interpretation of Article 5.

In addition to the risk posed by non-state actors and terrorism, the working hypothesis in the run-up to the NATO meeting in Madrid is that tension with Russia will not disappear soon (regardless of the outcome of the current crisis), underscoring the need for a solid defense and reach to the east, and a realistic approach in the Mediterranean and Africa. Likewise, Europeans must develop a common policy towards China: In a dialogue organized by the Atlantic Council, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted both the need for North America and Europe to maintain unity in the face of new threats, as well as the challenge of addressing the security consequences of the rise of China.

Putin, in his efforts to destroy the liberal international order, has shaken the foundations of NATO. It would be ironicand welcomefor the crisis over Ukraine to reinvigorate the Alliance.

Will the security benefits of cloud computing outweigh its risks in 2022? – Bobsguide

Stakeholders and executives of financial organisations remain on the fence about whether the advantages of cloud computing outweigh the potential risks of trusting sensitive information to remote servers. With the current demands on banks IT infrastructure and front-, middle-, and back-office staff, and the implementation of Basel IV pushed forward to January 1, 2023, this year may be a good time to transition ever-growing IT infrastructure to the cloud.

Cloud computing is becoming increasingly attractive toand indispensable forfinancial organisations. The cloud has the potential to completely change the financial services landscape. Banks can take advantage of cloud technologies to improve their entire risk management systems and to access fast, high-end technologies on an as-needed basis. As a result of switching to cloud computing, many services can be delivered with reduced up-front capital outlay and IT expenses.

The current state of cloud computing allows financial organisations to access any modern core banking system offering without any loss in cost-effectiveness. This not only enables banks to save costs, but also increases data processing speed and improves the quality of the financial services they provide.

Despite possible initial hurdles in implementing cloud technologies, such as security risks, reliability issues, and problems with business continuity planning, the extra flexibility and scalability provided by the cloud far outweigh the negative aspects. If an organisation can ensure effective corporate governance and security by performing vigorous endpoint management and IT policy management, the cloud will provide many security benefits.

Some IT professionals still overlook the fact data can be more secure in the cloud than in a physical data center. They continue to see data which has been stored in the cloud as a vulnerable asset, raising security, privacy, and compliance concerns.

It is true some engineers are so focused on getting to the cloud they do not initially put the time into setting up security, governance, and auditing. In the best-case scenario, the organisation only has a permissions nightmare to deal with, even though incorporating proper governance will still be a painful and expensive process. In the worst case, neglecting security in a rush to the cloud can result in a data breach or the deletion of all of IaC (Infrastructure as Code to automate cloud resource deployments) and backups.

The cloud is very different from a traditional data center, and banks need to approach their data management differently as a result. Otherwise, the cloud could end up being an extra expensive data center should financial firms choose to throw their legacy technology into it.

Cloud computing has the resources to ensure high levels of security and prevent data breaches, but it is imperative an organisation implement vigorous endpoint management and IT policy management to gain the maximum benefit.

Unlike traditional data centers, which typically rely on physical defenses to prevent unauthorized access to data, public clouds, such as Amazon Web Service or Microsofts Azure, allow server-side 256-bit encryption to protect files. These files remain encrypted when they are transferred within the network or saved to cloud storage.

Data objects sent to the cloud server by the client/user are also deduplicated and compressed. In this case, if a third party were to gain access to the data, they would be forced not only to decrypt the objects without the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) 256-bit encryption key, but also to uncompress and reassemble them into readable files.

When high-performance access to a file is required, the cloud infrastructure can be modified accordingly by deploying virtual or physical cache servers. As with traditional file servers and NAS (Network-Attached Storage) devices, these servers cache only the active files needed for local, high-speed access, thus reducing storage needs and costs.

Cloud storage data and metadata are encrypted and unavailable in their at-rest format, so a cache server is required to access them. This server, in turn, provides its own additional security, such as closed unused protocol ports, no open back-end access, additional encryption between the client and the directory server, and self-encrypting drives.

The same reliable authentication procedures and access tools as in an on-premises data center can be used for cloud deployments. For instance, access to remote data can be provided though standard file sharing protocols such as SMB (Server Message Block) 1, 2, and 3 or NFS (Near-Field Communication) v3 and v4, in exactly the same way as if traditional file servers or NAS (Network-Attached Storage) devices were used.

Additionally, AD (Active Directory) permissions, which are controlled by the banks system administrator, manage data access. An authenticated user can access only the data that is visible to them, and the rest of the data is protected through group- or user-specific policies. Moreover, the support of Active Directory trust relationships allows the creation of logical links and the application of policies between users and domains within the system.

The cloud easily surpasses the capabilities of traditional data storage when it comes to the protection of data against accidental or intentional mistakes and system failures which would otherwise lead to data corruptions.

Writing data to cloud storage is done using a WORM (Write Once Read Many) model, in which new data is always appended (added to the existing one) and never replaced or overwritten. The system creates snapshots of data at assigned intervals in order to be able to instantly recover any set of data in case any server-side or related problems occur.

Third party regulations and certifications ensure data is secure. All public clouds, such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, are required to go through extensive third-party certifications, e.g., HIPAA, HITECH, Soc2, PCI, and ITAR, to ensure all data is properly protected.

Consequently, they meet important audit and compliance requirements. Should a financial institution transfer its data to the cloud, it will meet all these requirements automatically. Should a financial institution transfer its data to the cloud, it will meet all these requirements automatically.

In the past, many data and file security solutions (such as firewalls and antivirus software only supported traditional NAS (Network-Attached Storage) software to detect and stop cyber threats. Today, the same integration capabilities are available when using cloud-based file storage.

Cloud solutions now allow high levels of flexibility when it comes to integration. This provides banks with the ability to find and isolate sensitive data, visualise data access, adopt and manage a least privilege access model, and streamline compliance activities.

Moreover, it allows unstructured data to be securely stored by financial institutions in public or on-premises cloud storage, where the cache server, as an extra layer of protection, processes the actively used data whenever high-performance access is required.

Working with on-premises deployment creates a false sense of security because of the perception the network itself is protected by a physical boundary. However, only the most sensitive networks operate in an air-gap mode without any outside access. Of course, providing remote access opens systems up to certain cybersecurity risks, but in the cloud, there is also less risk of misconfiguration, and all those risks are more easily mitigated by using standard security infrastructure and features, and standard security audit tools.

While cybersecurity risks exist in both on-premises and cloud environments, cloud systems are better protected than on-premises or data center deployments. It is notable many of the recent major hacks occurred in on-premises networks or hybrid environments rather than in purely cloud-based systems.

An optimally running cloud solution reduces cybersecurity risks through the use of a standard set of cloud services and technologies, which present less penetration risk than non-standard on-premises or hybrid networks.

Banking risk management functions will receive tangible benefits from cloud computing, but leaders of banks risk departments still face significant challenges when migrating to the cloud. With the increased number of cloud adoptions in finance, the importance of day one security, governance, and auditing should not be downplayed by a financial organizations management. Failing to take these factors seriously will undoubtedly lead to the disruption of business operations and could damage the organisations reputation owing to financial and legal issues.

To prevent disasters and secure a banks data in the cloud more effectively, they should set up multiple layers of security. For large banks and other financial organisations, it is better to set up risk management functions with a private cloud provider. Small- and medium-sized businesses, on the other hand, would benefit from taking advantage of the public cloud service providers in order to grow their business and connect data securely. For highly secure operations, it is better to use a private cloud. If you use a public cloud for the upper layer of your organisations operations, a hybrid cloud solution might also be a good option.

Moreover, hosting a cloud storage system in your own data center within a security perimeter can be just as efficient for your organisation. Private cloud solutions deployed in a private data center possess all the benefits of public clouds, including 256-bit encryption, compression, deduplication, and modular building blocks that can scale at a comparatively low cost.

By partnering with CompatibL, financial institutions can ensure they are always in control of their sensitive corporate and private information, and are compliant with the current and upcoming regulatory capital requirements.

Public cloud computing spend to overtake traditional IT – IT Brief Australia

Posted: at 6:05 am

Enterprise IT spending on public cloud computing, within addressable market segments, will overtake spending on traditional IT in 2025, according to Gartner analysts.

Gartners cloud shift research includes only those enterprise IT categories that can transition to cloud, within the application software, infrastructure software, business process services and system infrastructure markets.

The analysts find that by 2025, 51% of IT spending in these four categories will have shifted from traditional solutions to the public cloud, compared to 41% in 2022.

Almost two-thirds (65.9%) of spending on application software will be directed toward cloud technologies in 2025, up from 57.7% in 2022.

Gartner research vice president Michael Warrilow says, The shift to the cloud has only accelerated over the past two years due to COVID-19, as organisations responded to a new business and social dynamic."

He says, "Technology and service providers that fail to adapt to the pace of cloud shift face increasing risk of becoming obsolete or, at best, being relegated to low-growth markets.

According to Gartner, in 2022, traditional offerings will constitute 58.7% of the addressable revenue but growth in traditional markets will be much lower than cloud.

Demand for integration capabilities, agile work processes and composable architecture will drive continued shift to the cloud, as long-term digital transformation and modernisation initiatives are brought forward to 2022.

Technology product managers should use the cloud shift as measure of market opportunity. In 2022, more than $1.3 trillion in enterprise IT spending is at stake from the shift to cloud, growing to almost $1.8 trillion in 2025, according to Gartner.

Ongoing disruption to IT markets by cloud will be amplified by the introduction of new technologies, including distributed cloud. Many will further blur the lines between traditional and cloud offerings, the analysts state.

Enterprise adoption of distributed cloud has the potential to further accelerate cloud shift because it brings public cloud services into domains that have primarily been non-cloud, expanding the addressable market.

Organisations are evaluating it because of its ability to meet location-specific requirements, such as data sovereignty, low-latency and network bandwidth.

To capitalise on the shift to cloud, Gartner recommends technology and services providers target segments where the shift is occurring most aggressively, in addition to seeking new high-growth cloud opportunities.

For example, infrastructure-related segments have a lower level of cloud penetration and are expected to grow faster than segments such as enterprise applications that are already highly penetrated. Providers should also target specific personas, adoption profiles and use cases with go-to-market initiatives.

Gartners research on cloud shift provides a high-level view of the market impact of cloud computing by measuring the ratio of enterprise IT spending on public cloud services compared with traditional (non-cloud) for a given set of market segments.
