Black Lives Matter group dedicating Black History Month to local changemakers of the present – WTOL

Posted: at 6:31 am

This Black History Month, the Community Solidarity Response Network of Toledo is putting an emphasis on local leaders making history now.

TOLEDO, Ohio This month marks a time of transformation for Toledo's Black Lives Matter movement.

It's Black History Month and the Community Solidarity Response Network of Toledo is putting an emphasis on local leaders making history now.

The organization meets every week to discuss what is happening within their movement. And with a new year comes new opportunities for the organization to fight against social injustice.

"We're in the month of Black History Month. And this is a month that's set aside so that we can begin the process of honoring each other," said Brother Washington Muhammad, a representative with CSRN.

It's a time when the group can look back on the strides Black people have made.

Muhammad and his team focus on educating and leading a discussion to keep the movement going each week.

"Knowing the achievements of Black people helps give us perspective for what we can achieve, for what we can do," CSRN representative Julian Mack said. "And frankly, the sky's the limit."

This month, they're highlighting Black History Month and making sure the people making a difference today don't go unrecognized.

"By honoring some of our heroes and sheroes that are still with us today. So we've reached out to some of our elders to ask them to come on our Facebook Live, our podcast and talk about their experience and their journey," said Muhammad.

Because they say history is being made now.

By doing things differently, they hope the takeaway is even bigger for those tuning in.

"New ideas. That's something that stagnates a lot of movements. 'cause they get stuck on the anger or they get stuck on, sometimes, even the mission," said Jodie Summers, the treasurer for CSRN.

But with better communication and ideas, CSRN plans to move forward, with its fight.

"The only reason why we're able to do the work today is because of the work of previous people. We have the enormous opportunity to make history right now," Mack said.

One of the things CSRN is working on right now is going back to having their meetings in person after about two years.

The group would also like to open them up to the public once they find a place that's safe for everyone.

In the meantime, you can tune into their Facebook Lives every Tuesday at 6 p.m. by visiting their page here.

Column: Black Lives Matter put Maya’s Cookies in the spotlight, and owner Maya Madsen is making it count – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Posted: at 6:31 am

As a kid growing up in a tough part of Sacramento, Maya Madsen had a complicated relationship with food. Complicated in that there was never enough of it, and the possibility of getting more was not on the table.

Today, the fancy term is, food insecure. Back in my day, it was just being hungry all the time, Madsen said during a phone interview from her home in Scripps Ranch.

When you are a hungry child in a classroom trying to focus, everything looks like food. The teacher looks like a burrito. The kids look like sandwiches. All I could think about was when I was going to eat and how good it was going to taste.

This story is for subscribers

We offer subscribers exclusive access to our best journalism.Thank you for your support.

Many decades later, Madsen is still thinking about food. But what used to be a source of pain and frustration is now a cause for pride and celebration.

Madsen is the founder of Mayas Cookies, a San Diego-based wholesale bakery whose gourmet vegan-cookie offerings Chocolate Chip Smores! Brown Sugar Butterscotch! White Chocolate Espresso! have customers thinking about when they are going to get their hands on the next one, and how good it is going to taste.

Seven years after the former personal trainer and spin-class instructor started selling her home-baked cookies at the Little Italy farmers market, Mayas Cookies has a thriving online business, a new retail storefront, and a high profile on the vegan-food scene.

Perhaps most importantly, Madsen has survived her blinding time in the zeitgeist spotlight and come out with a clearer vision of what she wants to accomplish and how she is going to do it.

In June of 2020, as the country was being rocked by the marches and protests that swept the nation after the killing of George Floyd by a White Minneapolis police officer, Mayas Cookies became part of a viral campaign to support Black-owned businesses. Orders poured in by the thousands, a wave of goodwill that threatened to drown Madsen and her small bakery, but ended up pushing her into new territory.

It wasnt easy, but it was life-changing.

It was exhilarating, exciting and scary. It was daunting and emotional. You have all these people looking at you to move the machine forward, said Madsen, who worked 15 hours a day, seven days a week for 90 days straight to keep up with customer demand.

I dont even have a college degree, but what I have are problem-solving skills and passion. I try to think of the positive, and that has made me able to get through many things in life. I lean on my faith. Thats huge for me. And that has really convinced me that anything is possible. You just have to persevere.

Since that fortune-shifting summer, Madsen has turned the lobby of her Grantville bakery into a small retail space, hired more employees, expanded her corporate-gift business, and forged partnerships with movers-and-shakers like former NBA champion John Salley, who joined the company in an advisory role earlier this month.

Madsen has also been able to give back to the community. She has mentored other small-business owners; worked with nonprofit organizations like Junior Achievement of San Diego County and DETOUR, a local mentoring program for girls of color; and participated in panels about the joys and challenges of being a Black female entrepreneur.

Most recently, the mother of three adult sons has poured her passion for baking and consciousness-raising into her new Black History Month Collection, which honors Black icons with special-edition cookies that use ingredients from Black-owned businesses.

There is The Superhero, which pays tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman with a Black Panther"-inspired dark-chocolate cookie studded with extra-dark chocolate chunks from the Black-owned, woman-owned Kanda Chocolates, whose products are grown, processed and packaged in Ghana.

There is also The First Lady, a cookie inspired by Michelle Obama and her mother, Marian Robinson. The lemon-spiked sugar cookie features white-chocolate chunks and marionberries soaked in red wine from a Black-owned vegan winery.

The collection is rounded out by The Uncle Nearest, a brown-sugar cookie that contains candied pecans that get a boozy jolt from Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, which honors African American master distiller Nearest Green.

The cookies are meant to be savored, not analyzed. But in addition to an ingredient list that includes premium chocolates, organic flours and sugars, and a vegan buttery spread, the cookies in Madsens Black History Month Collection are made with purpose.

As Madsen has discovered during this exhilarating, daunting time, people are hungry for that, too.

Before Black Lives Matter was in the forefront of everyones mind, you would shop Black if you could. It was just a thing you did, the 52-year-old Madsen said.

I have a platform now, and its important within our community that we lift each other up and support each other. We have to be stronger, and when we have a platform, we have to use it.

Mayas Cookies are available online at mayascookies.com and at the storefront at 4760 Mission Gorge Place, Suite G, Grantville.

A Companion to Ayn Rand Now in Paperback – New Ideal

Posted: at 6:30 am

What does it look like to take Ayn Rand seriously? Leading scholars of Objectivism show us in the newly released paperback edition.

A Companion to Ayn Rand was first published in 2016. The volume is part of Wiley-Blackwells Blackwell Companions to Philosophy series. Typically for hardcover books from academic presses, the original price was a prohibitive $140 (the e-book was similarly priced). It is, therefore, a cause for celebration that late last year, the Companion became available in paperback with a drastically reduced price. (The e-book is now priced similarly, too.) This makes the Companion moreaccessible to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of Rands philosophy.

The Companion was conceived in the early 2000s by the late Allan Gotthelf, who coedited the volume with Gregory Salmieri. (Gotthelf passed away in 2013, leaving much of the editorial work to Salmieri.) The product of their effort contains sixteen chapters on every major area of Rands thought, plus a biographical chapter and an introduction to the study of Rand. Each chapter is written by authors who have made mastering Rands works and philosophy a significant part of their careers.

The publication of the Companion was a significant milestone in scholarship on Rand. Academic presses often publish edited collections to introduce students and scholars to important historical figures or fields of study. Wiley-Blackwells Companions to Philosophy series features volumes on Aristotle, Hobbes, Spinoza, Kant, and most of the traditional canon of Western thought. In 2016, Blackwell added A Companion to Ayn Rand to the series.

The book begins with An Introduction to Ayn Rand by Salmieri (available free online). Salmieri urges readers to take Ayn Rand seriously and offers the Companion as an aid in doing so. To take an author seriously means, he explains, to read her, not with an eye toward confirming ones prejudices (whether favorable or unfavorable), but simply with an eye to understanding what she thinks and why. Unfortunately, Salmieri has plenty of examples of commentators who recognize Rands influence but fail to take her seriously.

Salmieris advice, though, doesnt apply only to critics. He makes the case that even Rands fans have work to do to really take Rand seriously: if she strikes you as obviously correct with respect to an issue where you know many people find her views counterintuitive, it means working to identify the premises that you share with her and not with them, and then figuring out how to determine whether those premises are true.

The book promises to help readers live up to the demands of taking Rand seriously, and it delivers. As Salmieri explains in his introduction, part of what it means to take a philosopher seriously is to relate her views to their alternatives. Accordingly, much of the volume is devoted to such comparisons across the whole of Rands thought.

For example, Salmieris chapter, The Objectivist Epistemology, contrasts Rand with Enlightenment advocates of reason. In the chapters first section, Salmieri explains what Rand has in common with figures like Bacon and Locke. Each philosopher sees reason as essentially involving guidance for acquiring knowledge and seeks to give knowledge a solid foundation. But Rand offers different principles of guidance because she has a different view of how we form the building blocks of our knowledge, our abstract concepts. Locke returns later in the volume as a point of comparison in chapter 8 on political theory. Authors Fred Miller and Adam Mossoff contrast Rand with natural rights theorists and other advocates of individual rights.

READ ALSO: Objectivism Q&A with Aaron Smith and Mike Mazza

Another component of taking a philosophy seriously is evaluating how it responds to criticism. In chapter 7, Darryl Wright considers the objection that Rands advocacy of individual rights is incompatible with her egoism. Since Rand is an egoist, it is incumbent upon her to show that respecting the rights of others is in ones interest. The objection is that Rand fails to show this, leaving the obligation to respect the rights of others unsupported. Wrights reply clarifies several points in social philosophy by which Rand supports the need to respect rights. In doing so, he also explains Rands principle that each man is an end in himself and differentiates it from the Kantian principle with which many readers confuse Rands.

Seasoned Rand fans might expect a chapter on Rands political commentary to tread familiar water. However, chapter 15, by the late John David Lewis and Gregory Salmieri, contains, in my view, some of the books most original material. Titled A Philosopher on Her Times, Lewis and Salmieris subject is Rands political and cultural commentary following the publication of Atlas Shrugged. Our subject in this chapter is Rands distinctive view of the philosophical roots and meaning of the events of her time especially the events of the 1960s and 1970s when she was most active as a commentator on current events. The authors integrate twenty-five years worth of material to argue that Rands political writings have a unified theme. One significant value of this chapter, especially to younger Rand fans, is Lewis and Salmieris work contextualizing the historical events Rand is discussing.

When the book was first published, ARI conducted audio interviews with several contributors: Harry Binswanger, Adam Mossoff, Jason G. Rheins, Gregory Salmieri and Tara Smith.

A Companion to Ayn Rand is available now in paperback. The book is a must-have for any Rand fans library.

Dr. Phil Accused of Withholding Guest’s Medication to Make Her Seem "Crazy" – Futurism

Posted: at 6:29 am

The reality TV show Dr. Phil is being accused of a rash of abusive and unethical behavior on its set by current and former employees including an grim instance in which workers were allegedly instructed to withhold medication from a guest on the show to play up the entertainment value of a segment.

A dozen current and former employees accused Phil McGraw, the eponymous host of Dr. Phil, of enabling a toxic and abusive workplace, Buzzfeed News reports. The employees say they were frequently berated by producers, sometimes in a racist manner, and even instructed to perpetuate racist stereotypes onscreen.

There also were instances in which employees say they were ordered to participate in unethical and abusive behavior involving the shows guests. On one occasion, a former employee was allegedly instructed to make sure a guest didnt take her prescribed psychiatric medication in order to create more sensational television.

We were specifically instructed, Make sure that she doesnt take her medication before she goes onstage, because they wanted her to look unstable and quote-unquote, crazy, for lack of a better term, the employee told BuzzFeed.

Luckily, the woman was able to take her medication before an employee reached her. Still, it sounds indicative of a type of behavior that put messy television above the actual mental health needs of guests.

Thats all for the sake of TV, thesame employee later added. Obviously this girl should be on her medication and thats what were trying to get her help for, but for the sake of TV they wanted her to look off the rails.

The employees specifically accused executive producer Carla Pennington of frequently screaming at and berating staff members. While none of the workers say they witnessed this type of behavior from McGraw himself, they say he nonetheless turned a blind eye to it.

The work environment was so bad, in fact, that the employees said that their own mental health was damaged due to on-set behavior.

Everyone was just pretty miserable, another former employee told BuzzFeed. You would walk into the building and there was just a palpable dread and anxiety. Dr. Phil the show about mental health where everybody who works on it has terrible mental health because our work conditions were really bad.

Lawyers for McGraw have denied the allegations and insist that the workplace is not abusive, racist, and toxic.

Dr. McGraw categorically denies racist conduct and CBS does not tolerate racist conduct, H. Patrick Morris, McGraws attorney, told BuzzFeed News.

Of course, these are all just accusations but it would really be no surprise that a reality TV mental health show would turn a blind eye to abusive and unethical behavior to create sensational televised drivel.

SpaceX Stacks Orbital-Class Starship on Booster, Hoists It With Mechazilla – Futurism

Posted: at 6:29 am

What a sight.Full Stack

SpaceX has successfully stacked its orbital-class Starship prototype, dubbed Ship 20, on top of its Super Heavy booster a picturesque momentthat takes us one step closer to the space companys first Starship launch into space.

It also happens to be the worlds largest rocket ever assembled, as Teslarati points out. The next tallest rocket ever built was the Saturn V, standing at 363 feet. Together with its Booster, Starship stands at just shy of 400 feet tall.

Its the second time a Starship prototype has been stacked on top of a booster. But its the first time the company used the chopstick arms of its Mechazilla launch tower to hoist the spacecraft prototype over two hundred feet into the air to set it down on top of the booster.

The stack will likely form the backdrop of a presentation given by CEO Elon Musk later today. Images shared by Musk on Twitter show the robotic chopstick arms slowly lifting the 160-foot spacecraft against the night sky. A drone video also shared by Musk shows the spacecraft in motion.

The space company has been working towards this moment for a while now, first constructing the massive 469-foot launch tower, then putting it to the test with the use of water ballasts.

While its an exciting moment and a sight to behold, we still dont know when SpaceX will be ready for countdown. According to a filing submitted to the Federal Communications Commission in May 2021, the plan is to send the 400-foot Starship and booster into orbit and have it make a powered, targeted landing about 62 miles off the northwest coast of Kauai in the ocean.

The Booster stage will separate approximately 170 seconds into flight, the document reads. The Booster will then perform a partial return and land in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 20 miles from the shore.

Well hear more from Musk at tonights presentation, where we might even get a date for Starships inaugural flight to orbit.

All the Snow at the Beijing Winter Olympics Is Artificially Made – Futurism

Posted: at 6:29 am

Okay, that's pretty dark.Snow Worries

The slopes around northwest Beijing are too dry and warm to create any snow for the Winter Olympics, so its all human-made for the first time in the games history. In other words, according to CNN, climate change and variability mean that were watching the first Winter Olympics with 100 percent artificial snow.

Thats not an outlier. In fact, a study published late last year in the journal Current Issues in Tourismfound that just one of the 21 cities that hosted the Winter Olympics in the last half-century will have a climate suitable for winter sports by the end of this century if we dont get fossil fuels under control.

Italian based snow-creation startup TechnoAlpin says theyre providing the required 350 snow producers, seven machine rooms, and pump stations housing 51 high-pressure pumps and nine cooling towers for the games. Theyve been working on the set up for nearly three years.

We are very proud to say that we are the only company providing the snow-making systems for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, TechnoAlpin Asia area manager Michael Mayr told CNN in an interview this week.

There are multiple problems with artificial snow, including the fact that its staggeringly energy-intensive to create. The International Olympic Committee estimated that 49 million gallons of water will be used to create all the snow, which according to CNN is a days worth of drinking water for nearly 100 million people. Thats a lot of water in world where so many are forced to go without.

Fake snow is also not as safe, according to leading athletes and a new report titled Slippery Slopes: How Climate Change is threatening the 2022 Winter Olympics, published by the Sport Ecology Group, Loughborough University London, and Protect Our Winters earlier in January.

[If] freestyle super pipes are formed from snowmaking machines in a poor season, the walls of the pipe are solid, vertical ice and the pipe floor is solid ice, Scottish freestyle skier Laura Donaldson warned in the report. This is dangerous for athletes. Some have died.

If the snow is expensive, uses valuable drinking water and isnt as safe as natural snow for the athletes its been created for, is it really worth it? Why arent we just hosting the games in places with lots of snow, or switching up which events are held at the games?

Holding private corporations accountable for climate change will be much more effective than asking individuals to make small, personal contributions like recycling. Shouldnt we hold the International Olympic Committee to the same standard?

Scientists Find That Lifting Weights for Just Three Seconds Is Quite Good for You – Futurism

Posted: at 6:29 am

Image by Limor Zellermeyer / Futurism

The next time your gym bro asks you about your sick gains, you can tell em that youre only pumping iron for three seconds per day.

If it sounds too good to be true, just wait your new muscular mentorship comes courtesy of scientists who released a study last week in the Scandanavian Journal of Medicine & Science In Sportsdemonstrating that even just three seconds of lifting every day is enough toincrease muscle strength and thickness.

The researchers, who come from Niigata University of Health and Welfare in Japan and Edith Cowan University in Australia, asked college students who dont normally exercise to perform one muscle contraction at maximum effort for three seconds per day, for five days a week over four weeks, according to an Edith Cowan writeup about the study.

The study results suggest that a very small amount of exercise stimulus even 60 seconds in four weeks can increase muscle strength, lead researcher Professor Ken Nosaka said in the writeup. Many people think you have to spend a lot of time exercising, but its not the case. Short, good quality exercise can still be good for your body and every muscle contraction counts.

Of the three weight lifting techniques the researchers tried, ECU reports that lowering a weight creates an eccentric contraction and was the most effective. The group using only eccentric contractions saw overall muscle strength improved by almost 12 percent.Which is pretty good for a fraction of a minute of effort!

Although the mechanisms underpinning eccentric contractions potent effects are not clear yet, the fact only a three-second maximal eccentric contraction a day improves muscle strength in a relatively short period is important for health and fitness, Professor Nosaka said.

You can do anything for three seconds, so Nosakas right. Its a good reminder that our mental health and bodies are worth investing in, and any good gym bro will tell you its better to show up and do a short workout than never lift at home at all.
